Nowadays, the socioeconomic status has been changed a lot, so people are now more concerned about their life style and health. They have knowledge about the detrimental effects of synthetic products. That is why they are interested in natural products. Utilization of natural products of plant origin having fewer side effects has gained popularity over the years. There is immense scope for natural products that can intimate health benefits beyond traditional nutrients. Moringa oleifera is one such tree having tremendous nutritional and medicinal benefits. It is rich in macro- and micronutrients and other bioactive compounds which are important for normal functioning of the body and prevention of certain diseases. Leaves, flowers, seeds, and almost all parts of this tree are edible and have immense therapeutic properties including antidiabetic, anticancer, antiulcer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. Most of the recent studies suggested that Moringa should be used as a functional ingredient in food. The study describes growth pattern, growth parameter, mortality, recruitment pattern, exploitation rate ( E) and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) to Panna heterolepis from the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh). About 1223 specimens were collected from commercial fishermen for 12 consecutive months from January to December, 2019. Length-frequency data were analyzed with FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool. Moreover, our study recorded different water quality and environmental parameters including pH, rainfall, temperature and DO (dissolved oxygen) from the Bay of Bengal. The findings of the study revealed that the allometric co-efficient ( b ) value indicated negative allometric growth (<3.00) for P. heterolepis population. Whereas, the population dynamic parameters showed growth coefficient ( K ) 0.13 year -1 , life-span ( t max ) 3.85 year and growth performance index ( Ø' ) 2.30. Along with this, P. heterolepis was found to grow rapidly with an asymptotic length ( L ∞ ) of 39.08 cm. We found that the natural mortality ( M = 0.44 year -1 ) rate was almost similar with fishing mortality ( F = 0.42 year -1 ). Consequently, the standing stock was not quite sustainable with the existing fishing strategy. Furthermore, the maximum allowable exploitation rate ( E max = 0.471) was lower than the recorded exploitation rate ( E = 0.490). Subsequently, overfishing is the most focal threat to the wild stock. The recruitment pattern was almost continuous throughout sampling period. Finally, the MSY was assessed at 10234.47 metric tons. Additionally, the environmental parameters denoted that the ecosystem was in a balanced condition for the wild population. Reactive dyes are widely utilized in the textile industry due to their advantageous properties of vivid color, water-fastness, and simple application procedures with minimal energy usage. The toxicity of most azo dyes is a significant environmental concern, as effluents from dye processing and manufacturing sectors are known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic to numerous species. These issues are more grievous in Bangladesh, one of the largest exporters of apparel. This study aimed to isolate and identify potential fungal strains from textile effluent that are capable of degrading Reactive Red HE7B dye (a sulphonated reactive azo dye), a widely used dye in local thread dyeing industries. Dye degradation assay was performed in potato dextrose broth supplemented with 50 mg/l Reactive Red HE7B and the degradation rate was measured by a UV spectrophotometer. DNA extraction, quantification, PCR, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis were performed to identify the selected fungi. Among the isolates, the three best performing strains TEF -3, TEF -4, and TEF -5 showed 97.41%, 93.12%, and 82.89% dye degrading efficacy after 96 h of incubation, respectively. All three strains, TEF-3, TEF-4, and TEF-5 showed similarity with Aspergillus salinarus (accession no. NR&#95;157473.1) and the similarity percentages were 97.02, 96.95, and 95.28 respectively. Interestingly, this study probably the very first indication of textile dye degradation by Aspergillus salinarus strains. Background: Pooling of samples for SARS-CoV-2 testing in low-prevalence settings has been used as an effective strategy to expand testing capacity and mitigate challenges with the shortage of supplies. We evaluated two automated molecular test systems for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in pooled specimens., Methods: Pooled nasopharyngeal and saliva specimens were tested by Qiagen QIAstat-Dx Respiratory SARS-CoV-2 Panel (QIAstat) or Cepheid Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2 (Xpert), and the results were compared to that of standard RT-qPCR tests without pooling., Results: In nasopharyngeal specimens, the sensitivity/specificity of the pool testing approach, with 5 and 10 specimens per pool, were 77%/100% (n = 105) and 74.1%/100% (n = 260) by QIAstat, and 97.1%/100% (n = 250) and 100%/99.5% (n = 200) by Xpert, respectively. Pool testing of saliva (10 specimens per pool; n = 150) by Xpert resulted in 87.5% sensitivity and 99.3% specificity compared to individual tests. Pool size of 5 or 10 specimens did not significantly affect the difference of RT-qPCR cycle threshold (C T ) from standard testing. RT-qPCR C T values obtained with pool testing by both QIAstat and Xpert were positively correlated with that of individual testing (Pearson's correlation coefficient r = 0.85 to 0.99, p < 0.05). However, the C T values from Xpert were significantly stronger (p < 0.01, paired t test) than that of QIAstat in a subset of SARS-CoV-2 positive specimens, with mean differences of -4.3 ± 2.43 and -4.6 ± 2 for individual and pooled tests, respectively., Conclusion: Our results suggest that Xpert SARS-CoV-2 can be utilized for pooled sample testing for COVID-19 screening in low-prevalence settings providing significant cost savings and improving throughput without affecting test quality., (© 2021 The Authors. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic triggered an unprecedented global effort in developing rapid and inexpensive diagnostic and prognostic tools. Since the genome of SARS-CoV-2 was uncovered, detection of viral RNA by RT-qPCR has played the most significant role in preventing the spread of the virus through early detection and tracing of suspected COVID-19 cases and through screening of at-risk population. However, a large number of alternative test methods based on SARS-CoV-2 RNA or proteins or host factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection have been developed and evaluated. The application of metabolomics in infectious disease diagnostics is an evolving area of science that was boosted by the urgency of COVID-19 pandemic. Metabolomics approaches that rely on the analysis of volatile organic compounds exhaled by COVID-19 patients hold promise for applications in a large-scale screening of population in point-of-care (POC) setting. On the other hand, successful application of mass-spectrometry to detect specific spectral signatures associated with COVID-19 in nasopharyngeal swab specimens may significantly save the cost and turnaround time of COVID-19 testing in the diagnostic microbiology and virology laboratories. Active research is also ongoing on the discovery of potential metabolomics-based prognostic markers for the disease that can be applied to serum or plasma specimens. Several metabolic pathways related to amino acid, lipid and energy metabolism were found to be affected by severe disease with COVID-19. In particular, tryptophan metabolism via the kynurenine pathway were persistently dysregulated in several independent studies, suggesting the roles of several metabolites of this pathway such as tryptophan, kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine as potential prognostic markers of the disease. However, standardization of the test methods and large-scale clinical validation are necessary before these tests can be applied in a clinical setting. Appropriate management systems for the protection of fishes are mostly relying on the information of size at sexual maturity and optimum catchable length. The purpose of this research was to estimate the size at sexual maturity (L m ) and optimum catchable length (L opt ) of 10 marine fish species from the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) through multi-models using commercial catches from October 2019 to September 2020. Also, we calculated the L m and L opt of these species from worldwide water bodies based on maximum length (L max ). A total of 2967 specimens of 10 fish species were evaluated in the current study and total length (TL) was noted up to 0.1 cm using a measuring board, while body weight (BW) and gonad weight (GW) are weighed by digital electronic balance with 0.01 g accuracy. To assess the L m , three different models such as (i) empirical model based on L max , (ii) the relationship between TL (total length in cm) vs. GSI (gonadosomatic index in %), and (iii) logistic model were considered and L opt was assessed based on L ∞ . The estimated lowest L m was 11.8 cm (L max -based), 12.8 cm (TL vs. GSI), and 13.7 cm (logistic model) for Thryssa setirostris and highest L m was 23.3, 20.5, and 22.0 cm for Priacanthus macracanthus through L max , TL vs. GSI, and logistic-based models, respectively. From these three models, the lowest mean value of L m was obtained for T. setirostris (12.7 cm) and highest was recorded for P. macracanthus (21.9 cm). Fifty percent of mature marine species was in 14.9 cm TL and 90% species was in 19.5 cm TL. The smallest L opt was obtained as 13.4 cm TL for T. setirostris and largest was 28.2 cm TL for P. macracanthus. This study was generated data on L m and L opt for 10 newly marine species, which are globally absent. Therefore, this study will be helpful for developing sustainable management strategies and conservation of marine fishes through the implementation of mesh size based on the size at sexual maturity (L m ) and optimum catchable length (L opt )., (© 2021. The present Covid-19 pandemic causes disruptions to markets and businesses in general, affecting the supply chain inventory system most significantly. This work investigates a hybrid payment inventory model considering inflation, cash discount, price-sensitive demand, and preservation technology investment for non-instantaneous deteriorating products. Due to the economic downturn, a hybrid payment scheme composed of multiple prepayments and a delay in payment is proposed to facilitate post Covid-19 recovery. The proposed model is one of the first models to consider a hybrid payment scheme in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to provide guidelines to retailers in planning the selling price, replenishment period, and preservation investment in view of the pandemic situation. The hybrid payment policy is suggested during the financial crisis to sustain orders from a retailer to the supplier and from the consumers to the retailer. During the supply disruptions, two cases for shortages and without shortages are studied. The nonlinear model is solved by Lingo 17 software. This study shows the effect of advance and delayed payments on the retailer's total profit. It also shows that the total profit is extremely delicate to the inflation rate. The numerical examples illustrate the inventory model for different scenarios. Danis-Weber type-B ankle fracture is one of the most common injuries in young and active individual. This fracture offers a considerable challenge to orthopedic surgeon. Though there are several options for treating such type of fracture, ORIF by Pre-contoured Distal Fibular Locking Plate is the preferred option in the recent years. This descriptive type of observational study was performed from July 2017 to June 2019 in NITOR. Thirty (30) patients, 22 male and 8 female with an average age of 39 years with Danis-Weber type-B ankle fracture underwent ORIF by Pre-contoured Distal Fibular Locking Plate for fractured fibula and ORIF by 4.0mm cannulated cancellous screw for fractured medial malleolus. All the patients were initially managed by analgesic and short leg posterior slab. Average follow up was 24 weeks. Final outcome was assessed by AOFAS score. The main cause of injury was RTA (56.67%). Mean operation time was 1.2 hours. Mean duration of Hospital stay was 16.43±1.73 days. Superficial infection was in 3.33% and skin necrosis in 3.33% patient. Mean duration of radiological healing was 12.73±0.39 weeks. At final follow up, mean dorsi flexion was 10.93°±0.357° and plantar flexion was 50.93°±0.357°. Ninety percent (90%) patient had no difficulties in walking on any surface; 96.67% patient had stable ankle hind foot; 86.67% patient had good. Ten percent (10%) had fair and 3.33% patient had poor alignment of foot. The mean score in this study was 88.67±2.31. Satisfactory outcome was observed in 86.67% patients and 13.33% had unsatisfactory results. On the basis of results in the present study, it can be concluded that treatment of Danis-Weber type-B ankle fracture by Pre-contoured Distal Fibular Locking Plate is an effective and reliable method.

Bangladesh is one of the top-ten most heavily burdened countries for viral hepatitis, with hepatitis B (HBV) infections responsible for the majority of cases. Recombinant and occult HBV infections (OBI) have been reported previously in the region. We investigated an adult fever cohort ( n =201) recruited in Dhaka, to determine the prevalence of HBV and OBI. A target-enrichment deep sequencing pipeline was applied to samples with HBV DNA >3.0 log 10 IU ml -1 . HBV infection was present in 16/201 (8 %), among whom 3/16 (19 %) were defined as OBI (HBsAg-negative but detectable HBV DNA). Whole genome deep sequences (WGS) were obtained for four cases, identifying genotypes A, C and D. One OBI case had sufficient DNA for sequencing, revealing multiple polymorphisms in the surface gene that may contribute to the occult phenotype. We identified mutations associated with nucleos(t)ide analogue resistance in 3/4 samples sequenced, although the clinical significance in this cohort is unknown. The high prevalence of HBV in this setting illustrates the importance of opportunistic clinical screening and DNA testing of transfusion products to minimise OBI transmission. WGS can inform understanding of diverse disease phenotypes, supporting progress towards international targets for HBV elimination.

Currently, a worldwide pandemic has been declared in response to the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a fatal and fast-spreading viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The low availability of efficient vaccines and treatment options has resulted in a high mortality rate, bringing the world economy to its knees. Thus, mechanistic investigations of drugs capable of counteracting this disease are in high demand. The main protease (M pro ) expressed by SARS-CoV-2 has been targeted for the development of potential drug candidates due to the crucial role played by M pro in viral replication and transcription. We generated a phytochemical library containing 1672 phytochemicals derived from 56 plants, which have been reported as having antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal activity. A molecular docking program was used to screen the top three candidate compounds: epicatechin-3-O-gallate, psi-taraxasterol, and catechin gallate, which had respective binding affinities of -8.4, -8.5, and -8.8 kcal/mol. Several active sites in the targeted protein, including Cys145, His41, Met49, Glu66, and Met165, were found to interact with the top three candidate compounds. The multiple simulation profile, root-mean-square deviation, root-mean-square fluctuation, radius of gyration, and solvent-accessible surface area values supported the inflexible nature of the docked protein-compound complexes. The toxicity and carcinogenicity profiles were assessed, which showed that epicatechin-3-O-gallate, psi-taraxasterol, and catechin gallate had favorable pharmacological properties with no adverse effects. These findings suggest that these compounds could be developed as part of an effective drug development pathway to treat COVID-19.

Background: Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a severe complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children, which is increasingly being reported worldwide. Here we report the first case series of 7 children diagnosed with MIS-C in Qatar., Methods: Clinical features and outcomes of COVID-19 positive patients admitted to Sidra Medicine, Qatar from June to October 2020, who met the WHO case definition for MIS-C were reviewed., Results: The mean age in our case series was 5.6 years, of which 71.4% were males. All patients were previously healthy but had a history of COVID-19 infection. Fever, rash, vomiting and abdominal pain were the most common symptoms (70-100%). The average hospitalization was 12.9 days with no case fatalities. Laboratory findings included lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia in most patients, as well as evidence of coagulopathy and elevated inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, ferritin and procalcitonin. Many patients (71.4%) required inotropic support in intensive care, while only one required respiratory support. Although all patients had elevated cardiac biomarkers, cardiovascular involvement was observed in 42.9% of patients with one patient developing a giant coronary aneurysm. All patients received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and 86% of patients received corticosteroids, with two patients requiring treatment with IL-1 inhibitors., Conclusions: Our report is one of the first reports on MIS-C from Asia. Although clinical features and outcomes are not significantly different from those reported elsewhere, lack of case fatalities in our cohort may indicate that early recognition and prompt medical attention is necessary for a favorable outcome in MIS-C.

Nanophotonics allows the manipulation of light on the subwavelength scale. Optical nanoantennas are nanoscale elements that enable increased resolution in bioimaging, novel photon sources, solar cells with higher absorption, and the detection of fluorescence from a single molecule. While plasmonic nanoantennas have been extensively explored in the literature, dielectric nanoantennas have several advantages over their plasmonic counterparts, including low dissipative losses and near-field enhancement of both electric and magnetic fields. Nanoantennas increase the optical density of states, which increase the rate of spontaneous emission due to the Purcell effect. The increase is quantified by the Purcell factor, which depends on the mode volume and the quality factor. It is one of the main performance parameters for nanoantennas. One particularly interesting feature of dielectric nanoantennas is the possibility of integrating them into optical resonators with a high quality-factor, further improving the performance of the nanoantennas and giving very high Purcell factors. This review introduces the properties and parameters of dielectric optical nanoantennas, and gives a classification of the nanoantennas based on the number and shape of the nanoantenna elements. An overview of recent progress in the field is provided, and a simulation is included as an example. The simulated nanoantenna, a dimer consisting of two silicon nanospheres separated by a gap, is shown to have a very small mode volume, but a low quality-factor. Some recent works on photonic crystal resonators are reviewed, including one that includes a nanoantenna in the bowtie unit-cell. This results in an enormous increase in the calculated Purcell factor, from 200 for the example dimer, to 8 × 10 6 for the photonic crystal resonator. Some applications of dielectric nanoantennas are described. With current progress in the field, it is expected that the number of applications will grow and that nanoantennas will be incorporated into new commercial products. A list of relevant materials with high refractive indexes and low losses is presented and discussed. Finally, prospects and major challenges for dielectric nanoantennas are addressed.

The recently emerged coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has created a crisis in world health, and economic sectors as an effective treatment or vaccine candidates are still developing. Besides, negative results in clinical trials and effective cheap solution against this deadly virus have brought new challenges. The viral protein, the main protease from SARS-CoV-2, can be effectively targeted due to its viral replication and pathogenesis role. In this study, we have enlisted 88 peptides from the AVPdb database. The peptide molecules were modeled to carry out the docking interactions. The four peptides molecules, P14, P39, P41, and P74, had more binding energy than the rest of the peptides in multiple docking programs. Interestingly, the active points of the main protease from SARS-CoV-2, Cys145, Leu141, Ser139, Phe140, Leu167, and Gln189, showed nonbonded interaction with the peptide molecules. The molecular dynamics simulation study was carried out for 200 ns to find out the docked complex's stability where their stability index was proved to be positive compared to the apo and control complex. This study highlights the reproductive biology of Hooghly Croaker, Panna heterolepis Trewavas, 1977 which is one of the dominant fish in the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) based on monthly sampling of 569 female individuals from January to December 2019. We observed the effect of different environmental factors (temperature, rainfall, dissolved oxygen, and pH) on the reproduction of P. heterolepis. Measurements of each individual like total length (TL) and body weight (BW) were taken by using of measuring board and digital balance. Gonads were carefully removed through ventral dissection from females and weighed to 0.01 g accuracy. To assess the size at sexual maturity (L m ), spawning season, and its peak, the GSI (gonadosomatic index in %), MGSI (modified gonadosomatic index in %), and DI (Dobriyal index) were considered. Based on these indices, the L m was documented 15.0 cm in TL. Moreover, L 50 was predicted by logistic calculation as 15.0 cm TL. Furthermore, greater values of GSI, MGSI, and DI values denoted the spawning season as of January to July, with a peak in February. Additionally, Fulton's condition factor (K F ) was significantly correlated with GSI values. In addition, GSI was statistically correlated with temperature. However, other environmental factors (rainfall, dissolved oxygen, and pH) did not show any significant relation with GSI. Finally, the outcomes of our study might be useful to carry out specific management programs for P. heterolepis in the Bay of Bengal and nearby aquatic ecosystem.

Concrete mix design and the determination of concrete performance are not merely engineering studies, but also mathematical and statistical endeavors. The study of concrete mechanical properties involves a myriad of factors, including, but not limited to, the amount of each constituent material and its proportion, the type and dosage of chemical additives, and the inclusion of different waste materials. The number of factors and combinations make it difficult, or outright impossible, to formulate an expression of concrete performance through sheer experimentation. Hence, design of experiment has become a part of studies, involving concrete with material addition or replacement. This paper reviewed common design of experimental methods, implemented by past studies, which looked into the analysis of concrete performance. Several analysis methods were employed to optimize data collection and data analysis, such as analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression, Taguchi method, Response Surface Methodology, and Artificial Neural Network. It can be concluded that the use of statistical analysis is helpful for concrete material research, and all the reviewed designs of experimental methods are helpful in simplifying the work and saving time, while providing accurate prediction of concrete mechanical performance.

Objectives: Mental health problems significantly increased worldwide during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. At the early stage of the outbreak, the government of Bangladesh imposed lockdown and quarantine approaches to prevent the spread of the virus, which impacted people's daily life and health. The COVID-19 pandemic has also affected people's economic status, healthcare facilities and other lifestyle factors in Bangladesh. We aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health among the Bangladeshi population., Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional survey among 672 Bangladeshi people aged between 15 and 65 years all over the country from 15 April to 10 May 2020. After obtaining electronic consent, we conducted a survey assessing people's sociodemographic profiles and psychometric measures. We used The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale-8, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to assess loneliness, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance, respectively., Results: The prevalence of loneliness, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance was estimated at 71% (mild: 32%, moderate: 29%, severe: 10%), 38% (mild: 24%, moderate: 11%, severe: 3%), 64% (mild: 30%, moderate: 17%, severe: 17%) and 73% (mild: 50%, moderate: 18%, severe: 5%), respectively. In Bangladesh, the key factors associated with poor mental health during COVID-19 were female sex, unemployment, being a student, obesity and living without a family. The present study also identified statistically significant interrelationships among the measured mental health issues., Conclusions: A large portion of respondents reported mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. The present study suggests longitudinal assessments of mental health among Bangladeshi people to determine the gravity of this issue during and after the pandemic. Four endemic human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are commonly associated with acute respiratory infection in humans. B cell responses to these "common cold" viruses remain incompletely understood. Here we report a comprehensive analysis of CoV-specific antibody repertoires in 231 children and 1168 adults using phage immunoprecipitation sequencing. Seroprevalence of antibodies against endemic HCoVs ranged between approximately 4% and 27% depending on the species and cohort. We identified at least 136 novel linear B cell epitopes. Antibody repertoires against endemic HCoVs were qualitatively different between children and adults in that anti-HCoV IgG specificities more frequently found among children targeted functionally important and structurally conserved regions of the spike, nucleocapsid, and matrix proteins. Moreover, antibody specificities targeting the highly conserved fusion peptide region and S2' cleavage site of the spike protein were broadly cross-reactive with peptides of epidemic human and nonhuman coronaviruses. In contrast, an acidic tandem repeat in the N-terminal region of the Nsp3 subdomain of the HCoV-HKU1 polyprotein was the predominant target of antibody responses in adult donors. Our findings shed light on the dominant species-specific and pan-CoV target sites of human antibody responses to coronavirus infection, thereby providing important insights for the development of prophylactic or therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and vaccine design.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a peptide (i.e., SESDNNSSSRGDASYNSDES) derived from dentin phosphophoryn (DPP) with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) motifs on odontoblast differentiation in vitro and to compare it with calcium hydroxide-a material used conventionally for vital pulp therapy-in terms of reparative dentin formation and pulp inflammation in vivo. Alkaline phosphatase activity assay and alizarin red S staining were performed to evaluate odontoblast-differentiation in cell culturing experiments. To observe the reparative dentin formation and pulp inflammation animal experiment was performed and examined by histological methods. The difference between the experimental group and the control group was analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA test. The results revealed that the DPP-derived RGD-containing peptide triggered odontoblast differentiation and mineralization in vitro. In rats undergoing direct pulp capping, the DPP-derived RGD-containing peptide was found to induce intensively formed reparative dentin with high compactness at week 4. On histological and morphometrical examinations, a smaller degree of pulpitis was observed in the specimens treated with the peptide than in those treated with calcium hydroxide. This study suggests that the DPP-derived RGD-containing peptide is a biocompatible, biodegradable and bioactive material for dentin regeneration.

The relationship between viral infection and obesity has been known for several decades but epidemiological data is limited to only a few viral pathogens. The association between obesity and a wide range of viruses was assessed using VirScan, a pan-viral serological profiling tool. Serum specimens from 457 Qatari adults (lean = 184; obese = 273) and 231 Qatari children (lean = 111; obese = 120) were analyzed by VirScan. Associations with obesity were determined by odds ratio (OR) and Fisher's test (p values), and by multivariate regression analysis to adjust for age and gender. Although there was no association of viral infections with obesity in the pediatric population, a nominal association of obesity with seropositivity to members of the Herpesviridae family is observed for the adult population (OR = 1.5-3.3; p < 0.05). After adjusting p values for multiple comparisons (Bonferroni correction) the odds of being obese is significantly higher in herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) seropositive Qatari adults (OR = 3.3; 95% CI 2.15-4.99; p = 2.787E - 08). By VirScan, the sero-prevalence of HSV1 is 81.3% and 57.1% among Qatari obese and lean adult populations, respectively. Higher prevalence of antibodies against several peptide epitopes of HSV-1/2 is positively associated with obesity (OR = 2.35-3.82; p ≤ 3.981E - 05). By multivariate regression analysis, HSV-1 was independently associated with obesity irrespective of age and gender. Our results suggest that obesity among Qataris may be associated with a higher prevalence of herpesvirus infections, in particular HSV-1. Furthermore, the high prevalence of antibodies against peptide antigens specific to HSV-1 and -2 in the obese population suggests that these viral peptides may play a role in adipogenesis. Further studies with these candidate peptides in cell culture or animal models may confirm their adipogenic roles.

Objective: Bonding failure is a problem in orthodontic therapy and has been associated with orthodontic emergencies and delayed treatment time. The aim of this study is to determine the bracket failure rate among patients undergoing orthodontic therapy., Materials and Methods: From the archives of posttreatment records, 200 total cases were selected, out of which 122 cases had detailed treatment records. Cases with incomplete records, large restorations, or enamel aberrations were excluded from the study. Descriptive statistics were applied to obtain sample characteristics, and a chi-square test was applied to compare the bracket failure between different categories., Result: Out of the 122 samples enrolled in the study, female and male patients comprised 71% and 29%, respectively. Class I malocclusions were the most common problem (56%), followed by Class II (41%) and Class III (3%). The bracket failure rate was 3.43%, and 32% of the patients had an incidence of bracket failure. There was no significant difference in bracket failure among genders ( p =0.344), malocclusion types ( p =0.191), or operators ( p =0.188). The maxillary left quadrant was the most common site of bracket failure, followed by the mandibular right quadrant., Conclusion: Bracket failure is relatively uncommon. It is not affected by the gender or age of the patient or by malocclusion type. Background/purpose: Inhibition of bone resorption is essential for periodontal treatment. Recently, it has been suggested that boric acid suppresses periodontitis, but the mechanism of this inhibition is still not well understood. Therefore, to analyze the cellular response to boric acid administration, we histologically evaluated alveolar bone in experimental periodontitis of rats administered boric acid., Materials and Methods: 5-0 silk ligatures were placed around the cervix of the second maxillary molars of 4 week-old rats treated with or without boric acid. Five and 14 days after ligature placement, the periodontal tissues between first and second molars were investigated histologically and immunohistochemically using antibodies to CD68, cathepsin K, and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA)., Results: Five days after the beginning of the experiment, many CD68-positive cells appeared in the periodontal tissues with ligature placement without boric acid administration. Also, the number of cathepsin K-positive osteoclasts had increased on the surface of alveolar bone. However, boric acid administration prevented severe bone resorption and reduced the number of cells positive for CD68 and cathepsin K. At day 14 post treatment, cells positive for α-SMA were seen in the periodontal tissues after boric acid administration, whereas no such cells were found around the alveolar bone without the administration of boric acid., Conclusion: Boric acid inhibited the inflammation of ligature-induced periodontitis. This study reviews the quality of evidence reported in mobile health intervention literature in the context of developing countries. A systematic search of renowned databases was conducted to find studies related to mobile health applications published between a period of 2013 and 2018. After a methodological screening, a total of 31 studies were included for data extraction and synthesis. The mobile health Evidence Reporting and Assessment checklist developed by the World Health Organization was then used to evaluate the rigor and completeness in evidence reporting. We report several important and interesting findings. First, there is a very low level of familiarity with the mobile health Evidence Reporting and Assessment checklist among the researchers and mobile health intervention designers from developing countries. Second, most studies do not adequately meet the essential criteria of evidence reporting mentioned in the mobile health Evidence Reporting and Assessment checklist. Third, there is a dearth of application of design science-based methods and theory-based frameworks in developing mobile health interventions. Fourth, most of the mobile health interventions are not ready for interoperability and to be integrated into the existing health information systems. Based on these findings, we recommend for robust and inclusive study plans to deliver highly evidence-based reports by mobile health intervention studies that are conducted in the context of developing countries.

Introduction: Although extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales are a public health problem in the Arabian Peninsula, data on the molecular characteristic of their antimicrobial resistance determinants in children is limited., Aim: To determine the molecular characteristics of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in the pediatric population of Qatar., Methods: Whole-genome sequencing was performed on ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates recovered from screening and clinical specimens from pediatric patients at Sidra Medicine in Doha from January to December 2018., Results: A total of 327 ESBL producers were sequenced: 254 E. coli and 73 K. pneumoniae . Non-susceptibility rates to non-β-lactam antibiotics for both species were 18.1 and 30.1% for gentamicin, 0.8 and 4.1% for amikacin, 41.3 and 41.1% for ciprofloxacin, and 65.8 and 76.1% for cotrimoxazole. The most common sequence types (STs) were ST131 (16.9%), ST38 and ST10 (8.2% each) in E. coli and ST307 (9.7%), and ST45 and ST268 (6.9% each) in K. pneumoniae . CTX-M type ESBLs were found in all but one isolate, with CTX-M-15 accounting for 87.8%. Among other β-lactamases, TEM-1B and OXA-1 were coproduced in 41 and 19.6% of isolates. The most common plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes cocarried were qnr A/B/E/S (45.3%). Ninety percent of gentamicin non-susceptible isolates harbored genes encoding AAC(3) enzymes, mainly aac(3)-IIa . Only two of 57 isolates harboring aac(6')-Ib-cr were non-susceptible to amikacin. Chromosomal mutations in genes encoding DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes were detected in 96.2% fluoroquinolone-non-susceptible E. coli and 26.7% fluoroquinolone-non-susceptible K. pneumoniae ., Conclusion: Our data show that CTX-M enzymes are largely the most prevalent ESBLs in children in Qatar with a predominance of CTX-M-15. With the advancement and development of sophisticated bioinformatics tools, the area of computational bioinformatics and systems biology analysis is expanding day by day. The bipolar or manic-depressive disorder might be characterized as one of the most crippling mental problems that affect the people of early age and grown-ups. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between genetic mutations in the four above listed diseases and to create a Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network or common pathways. Firstly, we need to find out the genetic relationship between them. Thus it will help us to understand the genetic association between them and help to develop the drug design for all the diseases. Genes responsible for these diseases are gathered, pre-processed, processed and mining using python scripts. This exploration is expected to carry out further measurements in the field of drug structure and also contributes to the biological and biomedical sectors.

Last few decades, viruses are a real menace to human safety. Therefore, the rapid identification of viruses should be one of the best ways to prevent an outbreak and important implications for medical healthcare. The recent outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus which belongs to the single-stranded, positive-strand RNA viruses. The pandemic dimension spread of COVID-19 poses a severe threat to the health and lives of seven billion people worldwide. There is a growing urgency worldwide to establish a point-of-care device for the rapid detection of COVID-19 to prevent subsequent secondary spread. Therefore, the need for sensitive, selective, and rapid diagnostic devices plays a vital role in selecting appropriate treatments and to prevent the epidemics. During the last decade, electrochemical biosensors have emerged as reliable analytical devices and represent a new promising tool for the detection of different pathogenic viruses. This review summarizes the state of the art of different virus detection with currently available electrochemical detection methods. Moreover, this review discusses different fabrication techniques, detection principles, and applications of various virus biosensors. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neuro-psychiatric manifestation of chronic liver disease causing significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Though the exact mechanism is unknown but it is well accepted that various precipitating factors are involved in hepatic encephalopathy. Aim of the study was explore the precipitating factors of chronic hepatic encephalopathy. This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Medicine and Department of Hepatology, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period from April 2016 to October 2016. One hundred patients with hepatic encephalopathy fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled. Inclusion criteria were designed for all diagnosed cases of hepatic encephalopathy associated with cirrhosis of liver aged 18 years or above irrespective of sex. Patients with acute fulminant hepatitis and non-cirrhotic hepatic encephalopathy were excluded. The result of the study was mean age of hepatic encephalopathy was 52.81±8.15 years and 94.0% patients were above 40 years. Male (66.0%) were predominant over female (34.0%). HBsAg and Anti HCV were positive in 49.0% and 11.0% patients respectively. Stage of hepatic encephalopathy was stage-I in 8.0%, stage-II in 37.0%, stage-III in 39.0% and stage-IV in 16.0% patients. Changes of biochemical parameters were low haemoglobin level (70.0%), raised total count of leukocyte (25.0%), low platelet count (68.0%), low serum albumin (98.0%) raised prothrombin time (60.0%), low serum sodium (34.0%) and low serum potassium (63.0%). The recoded precipitating factors were gastrointestinal bleeding (14.0%), constipation (37.0%), hyponatremia (34.0%), hypokalemia (28.0%) infections (20.0%), use of diruretics (8.0%), use of sedatives (4.0%) and excess intake of protein (6.0%). While precipitating factor was absent in 11.0% of cases. In conclusion there are different factors which play a key role in precipitating hepatic encephalopathy but electrolytes imbalance, constipation, infections, Upper GI bleed, diuretics are the most common precipitating factors.

Every year thousands of people are being displaced in coastal areas of Bangladesh due to natural calamities associated with climate change, known as Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs). Climate change adaptation measures play a significant role in coping with the alteration of climatic components, while various forms of barriers hinder the sustainability of adaptation. This research was conducted to understand the perception of IDPs on climate change impact on health in the coastal areas of Bangladesh, including the adaptation practices and barriers to the coping strategies. To fulfill the objective, 420 individual surveys were conducted randomly in two Sub-districts of Khulna district in Bangladesh. The findings reveal that the riverbank erosion and cyclones were the primary reasons for displacement, and the social relationships were hampered in the new places of living. Also, the temperature in summer and winter, and the rainfall intensity increased, whereas rainfall slightly decreased over the last ten years. Differences of opinion were identified about the effects of the changing climatic variables on the respondents' health between the previous and present locations. Despite practicing different adaptive strategies, the weak financial condition and a lack of access to health care information are mostly hindering the sustainability of adaptation. The field of flexible antennas is witnessing an exponential growth due to the demand for wearable devices, Internet of Things (IoT) framework, point of care devices, personalized medicine platform, 5G technology, wireless sensor networks, and communication devices with a smaller form factor to name a few. The choice of non-rigid antennas is application specific and depends on the type of substrate, materials used, processing techniques, antenna performance, and the surrounding environment. There are numerous design innovations, new materials and material properties, intriguing fabrication methods, and niche applications. This review article focuses on the need for flexible antennas, materials, and processes used for fabricating the antennas, various material properties influencing antenna performance, and specific biomedical applications accompanied by the design considerations. After a comprehensive treatment of the above-mentioned topics, the article will focus on inherent challenges and future prospects of flexible antennas. Finally, an insight into the application of flexible antenna on future wireless solutions is discussed.

The mechanism of pressure-driven transport of simple liquid through a nanoporous graphene membrane has been analyzed using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. In this study, we investigate liquid dynamics properties such as local density, pressure variation, and local viscosity depending on the flow region. With movement of the specular reflection wall at the end of the front and back reservoirs, a pressure difference occurs mainly due to the change in the relative distance between the liquid molecules in the corresponding reservoir. The interfacial pressure difference strongly depends on the intermolecular force of the graphene membrane governed by the layered structure of the simple liquid and the applied flow velocity. The local viscosity was calculated for a nanochannel of simple liquid sheared by graphene walls. The liquid velocity adjacent to the pore edge was considered as the slip velocity, which provides updates in the Sampson flow equation. We observed that the entrance interfacial pressure and higher local viscosity in the vicinity of the graphene membrane, which are associated with the optimized definition of the wall-liquid boundary near the pore edge, play a critical role in the permeation of simple liquids through the nanoporous graphene membrane.

To circumvent the limited availability of RNA extraction reagents, we aimed to develop a protocol for direct RT-qPCR to detect SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swabs without RNA extraction. Nasopharyngeal specimens positive for SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses collected in universal viral transport (UVT) medium were pre-processed by several commercial and laboratory-developed methods and tested by RT-qPCR assays without RNA extraction using different RT-qPCR master mixes. The results were compared to that of standard approach that involves RNA extraction. Incubation of specimens at 65°C for 10 minutes along with the use of TaqPath™ 1-Step RT-qPCR Master Mix provides higher analytical sensitivity for detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA than many other conditions tested. The optimized direct RT-qPCR approach demonstrated a limit of detection of 6.6x103 copy/ml and high reproducibility (co-efficient of variation = 1.2%). In 132 nasopharyngeal specimens submitted for SARS-CoV-2 testing, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of our optimized approach were 95%, 99% and 98.5%, respectively, with reference to the standard approach. Also, the RT-qPCR CT values obtained by the two methods were positively correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient r = 0.6971, p = 0.0013). The rate of PCR inhibition by the direct approach was 8% compared to 9% by the standard approach. Our simple approach to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA by direct RT-qPCR may help laboratories continue testing for the virus despite reagent shortages or expand their testing capacity in resource limited settings., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Global aquaculture makes an important contribution to food security directly (by increasing food availability and accessibility) and indirectly (as a driver of economic development). In order to enable sustainable expansion of aquaculture, we need to understand aquaculture's contribution to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and how it can be mitigated. This study quantifies the global GHG emissions from aquaculture (excluding the farming of aquatic plants), with a focus on using modern, commercial feed formulations for the main species groups and geographic regions. Here we show that global aquaculture accounted for approximately 0.49% of anthropogenic GHG emissions in 2017, which is similar in magnitude to the emissions from sheep production. The modest emissions reflect the low emissions intensity of aquaculture, compared to terrestrial livestock (in particular cattle, sheep and goats), which is due largely to the absence of enteric CH 4 in aquaculture, combined with the high fertility and low feed conversion ratios of finfish and shellfish.

Mutations in the gene encoding Ras-associated binding protein 23 ( RAB23 ) cause Carpenter Syndrome, which is characterized by multiple developmental abnormalities including polysyndactyly and defects in skull morphogenesis. To understand how RAB23 regulates skull development, we generated Rab23- deficient mice that survive to an age where skeletal development can be studied. Along with polysyndactyly, these mice exhibit premature fusion of multiple sutures resultant from aberrant osteoprogenitor proliferation and elevated osteogenesis in the suture. FGF10-driven FGFR1 signaling is elevated in Rab23 -/- sutures with a consequent imbalance in MAPK, Hedgehog signaling and RUNX2 expression. Inhibition of elevated pERK1/2 signaling results in the normalization of osteoprogenitor proliferation with a concomitant reduction of osteogenic gene expression, and prevention of craniosynostosis. The etiology of central nervous system (CNS) infections such as meningitis and encephalitis remains unknown in a large proportion of cases partly because the diversity of pathogens that may cause CNS infections greatly outnumber available test methods. We developed a metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS)-based approach for broad-range detection of pathogens associated with CNS infections suitable for application in the acute care hospital setting. The analytical sensitivity of mNGS performed on an Illumina MiSeq was assessed using simulated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens (n = 9). mNGS data were then used as a training dataset to optimize a bioinformatics workflow based on the IDseq pipeline. For clinical validation, residual CSF specimens (n = 74) from patients with suspected CNS infections previously tested by culture and/or PCR, were analyzed by mNGS. In simulated specimens, the NGS reads aligned to pathogen genomes in IDseq were correlated to qPCR C T values for the respective pathogens (R = 0.96; p < 0.0001), and the results were highly specific for the spiked pathogens. In clinical samples, the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the mNGS with reference to conventional methods were 100%, 95% and 96%, respectively. The clinical application of mNGS holds promise to benefit patients with CNS infections of unknown etiology.

Globally, water pollution from the textile industries is an alarming issue. Malachite Green dye of the triphenylmethane group is an extensively used dye in the fabric industries that is emitted through textile wastewater. This study aimed to isolate and characterize potential Malachite Green (MG) dye degrading bacteria from textile effluents. Different growth and culture parameters such as temperature, pH and dye concentration were optimized to perform the dye-degradation assay using different concentrations of MG dye in the mineral salt medium. A photo-electric-colorimeter was used to measure the decolorizing activity of bacteria at different time intervals after aerobic incubation. Two potential bacterial strains of Enterobacter spp. CV-S1 (accession no: MH450229) and Enterobacter spp. CM-S1 (accession no: MH447289) were isolated from textile effluents exhibiting potential MG dye decoloring efficiency. Further, the RAPD analysis and 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed the genetic differences of the isolated strains. Enterobacter sp CV-S1 and Enterobacter sp CM-S1 can completely decolor MG dye up to 15 mg/L under shaking condition without any requirement of sole carbon source. Objective: Endodontic treatment should be both conservative and effective. Endodontic instruments with a greater taper are used for coronal flaring, for proper debridement with efficient irrigation. However, increased taper of an instrument can remove a larger amount of pericervical dentin, compromising the strength of the tooth. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hand files, ProTaper Universal, ProTaper Next, and V Taper rotary instrument systems on the fracture resistance of teeth. Materials and Methods: In total, 60 extracted human maxillary first premolars were divided into four groups-Group I (Hand Files; HF), Group II (ProTaper Universal; PT), group III (ProTaper Next; PTN) and Group IV (V Taper; VT) (N = 15). Each group was instrumented with the respective instrument system, irrigated, obturated, restored, and mounted in cold cure acrylic. A universal load-testing machine (Shimadzu, Japan) was used to apply a vertical compressive load. The maximum force was recorded in Newton. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Independent t -tests were applied to compare the maximum mean force required to fracture the tooth. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in fracture resistance between Group I (HF) and Group II (PT) and between Group II (PT) and Group IV (VT) ( p < 0.001). Similarly, a significant difference was observed between Group II (PT) and Group III (PTN) ( p < 0.01). Furthermore, a significant difference was observed between Group I (HF) and Group III (PTN), and between Group III (PTN) and Group IV (VT) ( p < 0.05), too. However, there was no statistically significant difference between Group I (HF) and group IV (VT) ( p > 0.05). Conclusion: Rotary files with more taper seem to remove more pericervical dentin than traditional manual and rotary files with less taper, thus altering the strength of the tooth.

Background: Infections with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) pose a serious threat to patients with dysregulated immunity such as in hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), but such infections have rarely been comprehensively characterized. Here, we present a fatal case of HLH secondary to cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection complicated by both anti-viral drug resistance and sepsis from multiple MDROs including pandrug-resistant superbug bacteria., Case Presentation: A previously healthy, six-year-old boy presented with a 45-day history of fever prior to a diagnosis of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and hemorrhagic colitis, both associated with CMV. On hospital admission, the patient was found to be colonized with multiple, multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria including vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and carbapenamase-producing organisms (CPO). He eventually developed respiratory, urine and bloodstream infections with highly drug-resistant, including pandrug-resistant bacteria, which could not be controlled by antibiotic treatment. Antiviral therapy also failed to contain his CMV infection and the patient succumbed to overwhelming bacterial and viral infection. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of the MDR bacteria and metagenomic analysis of his blood sample revealed an unusual accumulation of a wide range of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in a single patient, including antiviral resistance to ganciclovir, and resistance mechanisms to all currently available antibiotics., Conclusions: The case highlights both the risk of acquiring MDR superbugs and the severity of these infections in HLH patients.

Mallotus repandus ( M. repandus ) is traditionally used to treat muscle pain, itching, fever, rheumatic arthritis, and a variety of liver disorders. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity and the antioxidant potential of the ethyl acetate stem extract of M. repandus (ESMR) against d-galactosamine (d-GalN)-induced hepatopathy, along with a possible mechanism of action in rats. In vivo hepatoprotective activity of ESMR was examined using d-galactosamine (d-GalN)-induced hepatotoxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats. For this purpose, levels of serum diagnostic markers, activity of hepatic antioxidant enzymes, and liver histo-architecture were employed to assess the protective efficacy of ESMR. Furthermore, the total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents were quantitated, and the antioxidant capacity of the extract was evaluated using different methods such as 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), and hydroxyl radical (OH • ) scavenging assays. Intraperitoneal d-GalN injection triggered hepatotoxicity, as shown by the noticeable increase in the serum hepatic marker enzymes, bilirubin content, γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), and malondialdehyde (MDA), whereas glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels were significantly lower compared with that of the control. Pretreatment with ESMR reduced the hepatic enzyme levels along with bilirubin, GGT, and MDA compared to the d-GalN-intoxicated group. These results were supported by histopathological studies, where d-galactosamine caused coagulative necrosis, hemorrhage, and inflammation. However, pretreatment with ESMR ameliorated the histo-architectural changes and brought them back to normal. Results also revealed that the total polyphenolic, flavonoid, and tannin content, and total antioxidant capacity of ESMR were 136.30 ± 0.78 mg GAE/g mg, 38.72 ± 0.85 mg QE/g, 75.88 ± 0.54 mg TAE/g, and 123.16 ± 0.24 mg AAE/g, respectively. In addition, ESMR inhibited free radicals with IC 50 values of 94.47 ± 0.51, 127.33 ± 0.36, 164.12 ± 0.45, and 254.14 ± 0.35 μg/mL in DPPH, NO, H 2 O 2 , and OH • free radical scavenging assays, respectively. In folk medicines, Justicia gendarussa ( J. gendarussa ) is used as a depurative herb for treating fever, pain, and cancer and as laxative for constipation. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of the leaf methanol extract of J. gendarussa leaf (J gMe) against carbofuran (CF)-intoxicated liver injuries in Sprague-Dawley rats, along with the antioxidant activity of this extract. For this purpose, levels of serum diagnostic markers, hepatic antioxidant enzymes, and liver histo-architecture were employed to justify the protective efficacy of J gMe. In addition, the phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract were quantified, and antioxidant activity was investigated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl free radical scavenging assays. Results revealed that the leaf extract caused a significant (<0.05, <0.01) decrease of the level of hepatic enzymes, triglycerides, and bilirubin and an increase of the total protein. J gMe has also significantly (<0.05, <0.01) lowered the level of malonylaldehyde. Carbofuran markedly suppressed hepatic antioxidant enzymes, however, the leaf extract significantly augmented these enzymes. The hepatoprotective effect was demonstrated by the improvement in the histo-architectural features of liver sections of CF-intoxicated rats treated with J gMe at 500 mg/kg dose. In addition, J gMe showed moderate total phenolic and total flavonoid content, whereas the IC 50 values of DPPH, nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl free radical scavenging assays were 71.31 ± 0.42, 134.82 ± 0.14, 47.69 ± 0.38, and 118.44 ± 0.30 μg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the present study suggests the protective role of J gMe against hepatic injury induced by CF, which may be attributed to its higher antioxidant properties and thereby scientifically justifies its traditional use.

Background: Kingella kingae has emerged as a significant cause of osteoarticular infections in young children. Pharyngeal colonization is considered a prerequisite for invasive K. kingae infection. We conducted a prospective study to estimate the prevalence of pharyngeal carriage of K. kingae among healthy young children in Vancouver., Methods: From March 2016 to May 2017, children between 6 and 48 months of age visiting British Columbia Children's Hospital outpatient clinics for noninfectious causes were included in the study. Another set of participants was enrolled from a day-care center located at British Columbia Children's Hospital. A single-throat swab was collected after obtaining consent from parent/guardian. The samples were stored at -70°C and tested using an in-house developed real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. Epidemiologic characteristics and risk factors for K. kingae colonization were collected via a study questionnaire., Results: A total of 179 children were enrolled in the study, but only 174 samples were eligible for testing. Of the 174 samples, 5 had indeterminate results and the remaining 169 samples were negative by K. kingae polymerase chain reaction. The median age of participants was 23 months. About 36% of children were attending day care and had another sibling <5 years of age. Previous history of cold symptoms and antibiotic use was reported in 42% and 12%, respectively., Conclusions: The results of our study showed no prevalence of asymptomatic pharyngeal carriage of K. kingae in young children in Vancouver. Additional multicenter studies may help to understand the differences in pharyngeal carriage rate among healthy children.
