Objective: Apical transverse motion (ATM) is a new parameter for assessing left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony. Speckle-tracking radial strain analysis seems to be the best method to identify potential responders to cardiac resynchronization therapy. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between ATM and radial dyssynchrony assessed by speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NDC). Methods: We examined 35 NDC patients (mean age 49.2±28.1 years; 21 males). Cardiac dimension and ejection fraction (EF) were measured. Speckle-tracking analysis was performed on two-dimensional greyscale images in the mid-LV short axis view and apical views to calculate global radial, circumferential, and longitudinal strain (GRS, GCS, GLS), as well as rotational indexes (LV twist and torsion). Radial dyssynchrony was defined as a difference in time to peak systolic radial strain between the anteroseptal and posterior segments with a cut-off value of 130 ms. ATM was estimated using motion traces of 2 opposite apical segments. Results: Radial dyssynchrony was significantly correlated with ATMloop (r=0.78, p<0.001), ATM4CV (r=0.71, p=0.001), ATM3CV (r=0.67, p=0.003), GRS (r=-0.51, p=0.04), GCS (r=-0.55, p=0.03), LV twist (r=-0.58, p=0.02), and LV torsion (r=-0.56, p=0.03). The receiver operating characteristics analysis for ATMloop to distinguish between patients with and without radial dyssynchrony revealed an area under the curve value of 0.88 (CI: 0.73-1.04, p=0.005). The best cut-off value was 2.5 mm for ATMloop (85% sensitivity and 86% specificity). Conclusion: Apical transverse motion is closely associated with radial dyssynchrony assessed by speckle-tracking echocardiography. We investigated the relationship between peripheral artery disease complexity and coronary artery disease complexity in patients with peripheral artery disease. A total of 449 patients were enrolled. SYNTAX score, a marker of coronary artery disease complexity, was assessed by dedicated computer software and complexity of peripheral artery disease was determined by Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II classification. The SYNTAX score of patients with minimal peripheral artery disease, Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus A, Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus B, Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus C and Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus D were 5 (11), 12.5 (13.25), 20 (14), 20.5 (19) and 27.5 (19), respectively (values in brackets represent the interquartile range). SYNTAX score and Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus class was moderately correlated (r = 0.495, p < 0.001). In multivariate regression analysis male sex (B = 0.169, p < 0.001, CI95% = 0.270–0.735), Log10 SYNTAX score (B = 0.282, p < 0.001, CI95% = 0.431–0.782), Log10 creatinine (B = 0.081, p = 0.036, CI95% = 0.043–1.239), low-density lipoprotein (B = 0.114, p = 0.003, CI95% = 0.001–0.006) and high-density lipoprotein (B = −0.360, p < 0.001, CI95% = −0.063 to −0.041) were the independent predictors of Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II class. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of the geographic diversity and plant species on the mineral levels of the honey and honey bee tissues. Furthermore we investigated the effectiveness of honey bees and honey bee products to use as bioindicators for the determination of minerals and heavy metals which carry risk for the environmental pollution. Methods: For this purpose, four different sites were selected in the Black Sea region, with different environmental features in Turkey. A total of 22 bee colonies in these areas were placed for a period of four months. At the end of this period, iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels in bee tissue and honey samples were measured by Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Spectrometry Emmision = ICP-OES). Results: Mineral levels changed depending on the type of plants where colonies placed (P <0.05). Environmental quality in working areas were correlated with results of the tissue mineral analysis and mineral levels of the honey bee and honey samples (P <0.05). Conclusion: Present findings indicate that mineral contents of the honey bee and honey bee products can vary depending on the type of plants. In this study the rearing of drones and its importance for honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies were discussed. The effects of drones and queen on the physiological, behavioral and task specialization of bee colonies are genetically equivalent. For this reason the rearing of drones is of high importance in queen production. During the mating each queen has to mate with 8 or 10 drones. Under certain circumstances such insufficiently mated queens may lead to unproductive colonies due to insufficient worker population. Drones have to be reared from the colonies with known and preferred performances. Drone mother colonies need special care and maintenance. They should be fed throughout the time drones are being reared. Also they should be supported by addition of sealed brood combs each week. The time needed for sexual maturation of the drone and the queen are different. The drone comb is given to each drone mother colony about 40 days before the time the drones are needed, typicallyin the autumn. The drone may be permitted to mature in the feeding colonies. A carefully maintained drone mother colony can produce about 3200 to 4000 cm² drone brood area, which is sufficient for securing matings of 140 to 150 queens. Queen breeders should take into consideration the genetic quality of the drone mother colonies just like the queen source colonies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which examined the endodontic and prosthodontic management of an edentulous patient with skeletal class III malocclusion. The patient was fitted with removable coping-retained overdentures in the mandibular and maxillary arches to correct his difficulty with chewing and the mobility of his mandibular teeth. Endodontic treatment of the mandibular incisors, premolars, and molars was required prior to using them as abutments for overlying denture base material. The author also looks at the patient's gingival recession.

Purpose: We present our experience of stented and unstented distal hypospadias repaired by tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIPU). Patients and Methods: Data of 84 patients who were operated by TIPU method in 2 hospitals were retrospectively analyzed, and they were invited to be included in the study. Sixty-six patients agreed to participate in the study and were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of 38 boys operated in Sütçü İmam University Hospital on using a stent between 2015 and 2017. Group 2 consisted of 28 boys operated in Private Hospital of Megapark on without a stent between 2016 and 2017. The hypospadias objective scoring evaluation (HOSE) scale was used to compare the groups. Results: The median age was 2.81 years in group 1 and 1.95 years in group 2 (p = 0.243). The mean follow-up duration was 25.74 ± 4.62 and 24.5 ± 4.19 months in groups 1 and 2 respectively (p = 0.268). The HOSE scores were similar in both groups with comparable results (p = 0.622). Conclusions: No difference was observed between the groups in this study, regarding functional and cosmetic outcomes according to the HOSE score. The article presents a case study of a 31 year old male who was brought to the hospital after 15 minutes of cardiac arrest. He was defibrillated after the diagnosis of ventricular fibrillation. He was then transferred to intensive care unit. After his discharge transthoracic echocardiography showed normal findings. Patient was a case of Brugada syndrome (BS). Further information on the treatment procedure done on patient and BS is also presented.

This article describes the case of a 34-year-old male patient with congenital aortic and pulmonary stenoses. The patient experienced 3-4/6 systolic murmurs on pulmonary and aortic areas. He underwent electrocardiography to examine his case. Multislice computed tomography was also performed to evaluate the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and pulmonary artery.

This study aimed to explore the potential association between the triglyceride–glucose index (TyG) and the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP)—both considered surrogate markers for atherosclerosis—and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients diagnosed with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). We conducted a retrospective analysis, encompassing 715 consecutive patients with intermediate CCS risk, who presented at the outpatient clinic between June 2020 and August 2022. MACEs included non-fatal myocardial infarction, hospitalization for heart failure, cerebrovascular events, non-cardiac mortality, and cardiac mortality. The primary outcome was the composite occurrence of MACEs during the follow-up period. For time-to-event analysis of the primary outcome, we employed Kaplan–Meier plots and Cox proportional hazard models. The median age of the overall study population was 55 years, with a median follow-up duration of 17 months. Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified age, hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease–Reporting and Data System score, and TyG index as independent predictors of the primary outcome. Notably, individuals with high TyG levels exhibited a significantly higher primary outcome rate compared to those with low TyG levels (18.7% vs. 3.8%, p < 0.001). Similarly, patients with elevated TyG values demonstrated statistically higher rates of cerebrovascular events, hospitalizations for heart failure, non-fatal myocardial infarctions, non-cardiac mortality, and cardiac mortality. These findings suggest that TyG may serve as a predictive marker for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with CCS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our study aims to report the findings of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), Risk of Paradoxical Embolism (RoPE) score, the Patent Foramen Ovale-Associated Stroke Causal Likelihood (PASCAL) classification analyses, and follow-up results after percutaneous PFO closure in patients diagnosed with cryptogenic stroke. The medical records of patients with acute arterial ischemic stroke who were diagnosed with PFO by TEE and applied percutaneous PFO closure between 2020-2023 were reviewed. The echocardiography (Echo) score, the RoPE score, and the PASCAL classification were calculated for all patients as indicated in the literature. Newly developed arrhythmia, recurrent stroke, and cardiovascular death were recorded during follow-up. A total of 65 patients were included in the study. The median age was 41 years [range:33 -47]), the median RoPE score was 8, and the Echo score was 3. While 29.2% of the patients were in the possible group according to the PASCAL classification, 70.8% were in the probable group. We did not have any patients in the unlikely group. Recurrent ischemic stroke was detected in only two patients at a median follow-up of 12.1 months. No cardiac arrhythmia or cardiovascular death was observed. PFO closure in PFO-associated stroke patients was safe, with a low incidence of arrhythmia and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events during the short -term follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP) detected on coronary angiography (CA) has been related to poor prognosis. We sought to examine the relationship between thromboembolic risk scores, routinely used in cardiology practice, and CSFP. This single-center, retrospective, case-control study comprised 505 individuals suffering from angina and had verified ischemia between January 2021 and January 2022. Demographic and laboratory parameters were obtained from the hospital database. The following risk scores were calculated; CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc, M-CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc, CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc-HS, R 2 -CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc, M-R 2 -CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc, ATRIA, M-ATRIA, M-ATRIA-HSV. The overall population was divided into two groups; coronary slow flow and coronary normal flow. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to compare risk scores between patients with and without CSFP. Pairwise comparisons were then undertaken to test performance in determining CSFP. The mean age was 51.7 ± 10.7 years, of whom 63.2% were male. CSFP was detected in 222 patients. Those with CSFP had higher rates of male gender, diabetes, smoking, hyperlipidemia, and vascular disease. All scores were higher in CSFP patients. Multivariable logistic regression analysis found that CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc-HS score was the most powerful determinant of CSFP among all risk schemes (for each one-point increase in score OR = 1.90, p < 0.001; for score of 2–3 OR = 5.20, p < 0.001; for score of >4 OR = 13.89, p < 0.001). Also, the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc-HS score provided the best discriminative performance, with a cut-off value of ≥2 in identifying CSFP (AUC = 0.759, p < 0.001). We showed that thromboembolic risk scores may be associated with CSFP in patients with non-obstructive coronary architecture who underwent CA. The article presents a case study of a 37-year-old man who was diagnosed with aortic valve aneurysm after he had a cerebrovascular accident.

In this study, collective honey bee colony deaths (Apis mellifera L.), which ever increases in the last years and threatens beekeepers and thereby beekeeping sector, are evaluated. Especially at the last 50 years period, world total colony asset increased about 100% and this increase is still in progress. However, 10-15% bee deaths generally recognised normal at winter season, reached 100% level in some years and caused major economic losses. Although some hypothesis are suggested and research on them were performed, still a certain judgement could not be manifested on the reasons of collective deaths. Our research, observations and communications with bee keepers at the last 15 years revealed that these deaths cannot be due to only one reason, but may be due to more than one factor creating stress on colonies affecting sinergically. Major factors causing stress are inadequate knowledge on bee biology and colony dynamics, errors in keeping applications, decrease in the genetic variation, pervading of parasite-predator, disease factors, season switches, over utilisation of industrial sugar, attracting type of detergants, excessive acaricide and antibiotic and using farming intented manure and pesticide utilisation. Current presence of many of these factors gives a momentum to the problem up to over the tolerance limit of the colony and results with the colony downfall syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A detailed morphological and genetic characterization of honey bees from the Thrace and west Anatolian regions of Turkey was surveyed. A total of 1650 worker bee samples (110 colonies) were evaluated with the forty-one morphological characters and 217 honey bee samples were analyzed via DNA sequencing of the tRNAleu-cox2 region. In this study, three different populations, Thrace (Tekirdağ, Kırklareli and Edirne provinces), Island Gökçeada, and western Anatolia were formed based on morphometrics, since the Marmara Sea has taken a very strong barrier role in this formation. The morphological similarity of the Thrace population was supported by the genetic analysis. The sequencing of the tRNAleu-cox2 region revealed twenty-two different haplotypes, sixteen of which are novel. The C2d, macedonica-like haplotype, was the most widely found haplotype (48%) all around the Thrace region. Along with the C2d haplotype, previously published C2s, C2v, C2i, C2j, and C2h haplotypes, and the newly found haplotypes were also observed but less frequently. In this study, Thrace honey bees were found to more similar to A. m. macedonica through the mtDNA sequence analysis, whereas carnica-like honey bees were only found near the Istranca mountain ridges, Kırklareli province and macedonica-like honey bees all around the Thrace region. According to our results, some of the Thrace honey bee populations may be both A. m. carnica and A. m. macedonica but the assignment to the latter subspecies seems more likely due to its geographic range. The aim of this study was to evaluate left atrial deformations using speckle tracking echocardiography for predicting left atrial appendage ( LAA) thrombus in patients with suspected cardioembolic stroke who were in normal sinus rhythm. A total of 153 ischemic stroke patients (89 males, 64 females) in sinus rhythm who were suspected of having cardioembolism were included in the study. The patients underwent conventional two-dimensional (2 D) echocardiogram and 2 D speckle tracking echocardiogram of the left atrium. Left atrial peak strain ( LA-4 C- RES) and left atrial precontraction strain ( LA-4 C- PUMP) were measured. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of thrombus in the LAA in transesophageal echocardiography. Both LA-4 C- RES and LA-4 C- PUMP values were found to be significantly lower in patients with LAA thrombus (11.8 ± 1.4% vs. 33 ± 12%, P < 0.001 and 5.8 ± 1.3% vs. 14.2 ± 5.3%, P < 0.001, respectively). A good inverse correlation was present between LA-4 C- RES values and LAA morphologic parameters (with LAA area: r = −0.70, P < 0.001, with LAA length: r = −0.60, P < 0.001), and a good positive correlation was present with LAA emptying velocity with pulse Doppler (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of the LA-4 C- RES was 0.94 (0.90-0.98, P < 0.001), for the LA-4 C- PUMP, the area was 0.92 (0.87-0.96, P < 0.001) to predict LAA thrombus. Left atrial deformation parameters measured by 2 D speckle tracking method was found to predict impaired LAA functions and the presence of LAA thrombus in ischemic stroke patients with suspected cardioembolism, but who are in sinus rhythm. Purpose: In this study, we applied platelet rich fibrin (PRF) and pure olive oil on the incision surfaces of rats. We aimed to examine whether PRF may be used safely to prevent peritoneal adhesions. Materials and Methods: Fourty rats were divided into 4 groups (n=8). Eight rats, not included in the study groups, were used to obtain PRF material. Group 1 had no surgical procedure, Group 2 was operated without medication, Group 3 was operated and received 1cc olive oil, Group 4 was operated and received 1 cc PRF. After 21 days, cecum areas were examined histopathologically. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) levels were measured in serum by ELISA. Results: The adhesion scores and severity of fibrosis in Group 3 and 4 were significantly lower than Group 2. Plasma TNF-α value was significantly higher in Group 2 than Group 4. Plasma PDGF value was significantly higher in Group 2 than Group 3 and 4. Discussion: PRF reduced intestinal adhesion by inhibiting the proliferation of fibroblasts and inflammatory cells, and promoting the proliferation of mesothelial cells. PRF has anti-inflammatory effect and prevented postop adhesions, based mainly on growth factors and cytokines in its content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two doses of heparin, a low dose (2500 IU) and a standard dose (5000 IU) in patients who underwent transradial coronary angiography (TRCAG). Methods A total of 459 consecutive patients were included in the present study, 217 in the 2500-IU heparin group and 242 in the 5000-IU heparin group. Radial artery patency was evaluated one month after the TRCAG with Doppler ultrasonography. Results The RAO was observed in 15 (3.3%) patients. The RAO was significantly higher in 2500 IU heparin group than 5000 IU heparin group (5.5% vs 1.2% p = 0.010, respectively). Female gender (Odds ratio (OR) = 66.135, p = 0.002, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 4.584-954.131), sheath removal time (OR = 1.496, p < 0.001, 95% CI = 1.254-1.784) and administration of 2500 IU heparin (OR = 9.758, p = 0.034, 95% CI = 1.195-79.695) were the independent predictors of RAO in multivariate regression analysis. While the presence of hypertension was independently associated with radial artery patency in multivariate regression analysis (OR = 0.022, p = 0.005, 95% CI = 0.002-0.307). Conclusion The patients in the standard dose heparin group had lower RAO rates compared to low dose group in this study. This suggests that using the current technique, standard dose of heparin is still required for transradial diagnostic angiography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Postoperative atrial fibrillation ( POAF) is common after cardiac surgery and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospital stay. Speckle tracking echocardiography ( STE) has been applied recently for evaluation of LA function. The purpose of this study was to examine whether left atrial longitudinal strain measured by STE is a predictor for the development of POAF following mitral valve surgery for severe mitral regurgitation. We studied 53 patients undergoing mitral valve surgery in sinus rhythm at the time of surgery. Echocardiography with evaluation of LA strain by STE was performed. Detection of POAF was based on documentation of AF episodes by continuous telemetry throughout hospitalization. Patients who did not develop POAF were taken as group 1 and those who had POAF constituted group 2. The echocardiographic and clinical predictors of POAF were investigated. POAF occurred in 28.3% of subjects. Mean age, LAVi and BNP were found higher in group 2 while peak atrial longitudinal strain ( PALS) (13.9 ± 3.8% vs. 24.8 ± 7.3%; P < 0.001), peak atrial contraction strain ( PACS) (7.6 ± 1.95% vs. 11.3 ± 3.5%; P < 0.001) were significantly lower. By multivariate logistic regression analysis, PALS and LAVi were independent predictor of POAF development. LA longitudinal strain was found to predict POAF in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery. It could be used to better identify patients at greater risk of developing POAF, and thus to guide in risk stratification and to take appropriate intensive prophylactic therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
