International audience; Temperate fish species are annual spawners and mainly rely on annually cycling cues (temperature and photoperiod) to synchronise the three main phases of their reproductive cycle, that is, induction (initiation of oogenesis), vitellogenesis and the final stages (including maturation, ovulation and oviposition). This review synthesises how these three phases are controlled by specific temperature and photoperiod variations. The direction of the changes (i.e. decrease or increase) is the most important factor, although the amplitude, rates and timing of variations should also be considered to improve/optimise the quality of reproduction in aquaculture. In addition, we tentatively classified temperate fish species sharing similar temperature and/or photoperiod variation requirements for reproduction into three general functional groups. The first group (salmonids) is induced by increasing photoperiod. Vitellogenesis and the final stages are synchronised by decreasing photoperiod. The second group (percids, moronids and gadids) is induced by decreasing both temperature and photoperiod. A chilling period allows vitellogenesis. Increasing temperatures synchronise the final stages. The third group (cyprinids) is induced by decreasing either photoperiod or temperature. Vitellogenesis is faster at warm temperatures. The final stages require an increase in either photoperiod or temperature. This classification may help future research on the control of reproduction in newly cultured fish species.

International audience; Model-based approaches are commonly used to engineering software for safety-critical applications. Several artifacts, such as abstract specifications, formal refinements, and assertions at the implementation level require computational support for formal reasoning activities. Delivering formal verification tools that address such reasoning activities in an automated, trustable and flexible fashion remains a scientific challenge. Researchers from LORIA and UFRN have been collaborating to address this challenge and are now developing an automated theorem prover targeted at trustable software verification efforts.

Abstract

How may fish domestication participate in sustainable development of aquaculture? The development of fish farming currently compensates for the stagnation of fishery catches while the market demand continues to increase. The development of fish farming relies on an active diversification of farmed fish species. A diversification based on the farming of native species could reduce the environmental impact of fish culture and could better fit to needs of local markets. Such development could also favour a more integrated local economy. In this context, the building of a generic approach for multi-species domestication is required to optimise the use of the technical and financial means available for fish culture diversification.

International audience; European inland fish culture is presently facing several difficulties: the classical products for the consumption market (trout, carp) is showing decreasing production (bad image of the products with consumers) and the restocking market is falling due to a substantial decline in the number of anglers. Considering such a context, inland pisciculture renewal is possible through a diversification of products and a domestication of new species based on numerous specific local markets which already exist in Europe. The present development of percid culture (Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis; pikeperch, Sander lucioperca) constitutes a good example. However, to induce a real economic dynamic, it is necessary to develop a generic approach for the domestication of new species in order to reduce the costs linked to such processes.; La pisciculture continentale européenne rencontre actuellement de réelles difficultés, ses filières classiques pour le marché de la consommation (truite, carpe) voient leurs productions diminuer (déficit d’image des produits), et le marché du repeuplement régresse du fait d’une perte d’attractivité du loisir pêche. Face à ce contexte délicat, un renouveau est envisageable par une diversification des productions et la domestication de nouvelles espèces en s’appuyant sur les nombreux marchés de niche existants en Europe. Le développement récent de la perciculture (perche commune, Perca fluviatilis ; sandre, Sander lucioperca) constitue un bon exemple. Cependant, pour enclencher une réelle dynamique économique, il est nécessaire de concevoir une approche générique de la domestication afin de limiter les coûts induits par la domestication de nouvelles espèces.

This class is decidable. We show here that BSR theories can furthermore be combined with another disjoint decidable theory, so that we obtain a decision procedure for quantifier-free formulas in the combination of the BSR theory and another decidable theory. The classical Nelson-Oppen combination scheme requires theories to be stably-infinite, ensuring that, if a model is found for both theories in the combination, models agree on cardinalities and a global model can be built. We show that combinations with BSR theories can be much more permissive, even though BSR theories are not always stably-infinite. We state that it is possible to describe exactly all the (finite or infinite) cardinalities of the models of a given BSR theory. For the other theory, it is thus only required to be able to decide if there exists a model of a given cardinality. With this result, it is notably possible to use some set operators, operators on relations, orders -- any operator that can be expressed by a set of BSR formulas -- together with the usual objects of SMT solvers, notably integers, reals, uninterpreted symbols, enumerated types.

Abstract

International audience; There is currently an increasing demand for diversification of cultured fish species production. However, currently domestication of new species is largely achieved by Iona, costly, and usually empirical zootechnical approaches, which show much scope for optimization. Within this context, it was considered worthwhile to try to develop a generic approach that may aid understanding of the process of domestication in the long term, and to foresee how a new species may be domesticated. As a first step towards the development of such an approach, we described a new functional classification of 65 freshwater species, chiefly inhabiting European waters. This classification, based upon the analysis of 29 reproductive traits, contained seven main groups or guilds. The major traits that separated these guilds are ego (i.e., buoyancy, temperature and degree-days), larvae (size and behaviour) and spawning conditions (breeding period, temperature, spawning site preparation and parental care). We confirmed that it is not feasible to make generalizations solely on a taxonomic basis, since most guilds contain phylogenetically distant species. In conclusion, this new classification system, differing significantly from all other previous classifications, could now serve as a possible framework helping to enhance the domestication of new species, especially in European countries, by comparison of species to those belonging to the same guild.

Abstract

We present the architecture of the oncoming version of the SMT (Satisfiability Modulo Theories) solver haRVey. haRVey checks the satisfiability of a formula written in a first-order language with interpreted symbols from various theories. Its new architecture is original, first in the sense that it is a combination of reasoners, rather than the traditional combination of decision procedures. Second, one of these reasoners is a full-featured first-order saturation-based prover. Finally, some of those reasoners in the combination may only be sporadically activated not using computer time when inactive. We believe those new features will contribute to the efficiency and expressivity of the new version of the tool.

Abstract

Le secteur de l’aquaculture continentale évolue dans un contexte socio-économique de plus en plus difficile. La diversification des activités, avec notamment la production de perche commune, Perca fluviatilis, représente une réelle alternative. Dans un premier temps, le comportement de l’espèce en milieu confiné et l’identification de points de blocage majeurs (sensibilité à la qualité de l’eau et à certains agents pathogènes, maturité sexuelle précoce) ont orienté le développement de cette perciculture vers un système d’élevage en monoculture hors-sol (circuit fermé). Dans un deuxième temps, les différentes étapes du cycle de production ont été optimisées : contrôle du cycle de reproduction, définition des conditions environnementales optimales à tous les stades de développement, détermination des besoins nutritionnels (effets sur la qualité des produits) et amélioration génétique des populations mises en élevage. Dans un troisième temps, des transferts de technologies ont permis la création des premières fermes pilotes., For freshwater fish farmers, the socio-economic context becomes more and more difficult. The diversification of the activities with production of Eurasian perch represents a real alternative. In a first step, its behaviour in confined environments and the major identified bottlenecks (sensibility to water quality and pathological agents, precocious sexual maturity) have directed the Eurasian perch culture towards water recirculating systems as rearing system. In a second step, the different phases of a production cycle have been optimized : control of the reproductive cycle, optimization of the environmental breeding conditions, determination of the nutritional requirements (effects on product quality) and genetic improvement of populations. In a third step, technological transfers have allowed the development of pilot-scale farms.

Abstract

International audience; Studying two successive phases of fish production cycle, larval rearing and growing phase, fish growth patterns were analysed to perform a functional typology. For all developmental stages, high growth heterogeneities (intra and inter-specific) were observed. They were explained by the effects of intrinsic and external factors (biotic and abiotic). For the growing phase, this high phenotypic variability does not allow to sort out species according to their growing pattern. This effect is partly due to strong interactions of growth with other physiological functions (e.g. reproduction). Growing pattern does not seem to be discriminative. For larval rearing (larval, post-larval and juvenile stages), growth heterogeneity and cannibalism could be related to the living strategies of fish species.; En s’appuyant sur les deux principales phases successives, la larviculture et le grossissement, qui caractérisent un cycle de production en aquaculture, la fonction de croissance est analysée sous l’angle d’une typologie fonctionnelle. Pour tous les stades de développement, une très forte hétérogénéité de croissance (intra- et interspécifique) est constatée, elle s’explique principalement par l’action de facteurs inhérents à l’espèce ou imposés (abiotiques et biotiques). Pour la phase de grossissement, cette forte variabilité phénotypique ne permet pas le regroupement d’espèces par rapport à des types de croissance donnés. De fortes interactions avec d’autres fonctions biologiques, comme la reproduction, contribuent à cet effet. La fonction de croissance ne permet pas de discriminer des groupes d’espèces en relation avec des stratégies fonctionnelles. Pour la phase de larviculture (stades larve, post-larve et juvénile), l’hétérogénéité de croissance intraspécifique et l’impact du cannibalisme pourraient être liés aux stratégies de vie des espèces de poissons.

Abstract

Identification of relevant social impact indicators for a Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) is still difficult and poorly documented (Jorgensen, et al, 2009). In aquaculture systems, the studies based on social aspects are essentially focused on manpower or on conflicts with other activities . In the PISCEnLit project**, we aim to broaden the vision of social impacts of fish farming systems using a new approach of SLCA. We studied fish farming pond systems in France (Lorraine and Brenne) and Indonesia (Tangkit Baru and Kumpeh Ulu in Sumatra island). In this study, we focused on the choice of the impact categories using the participation of stakeholders (James et al., 2002) by the identification and selection of the relevant social impacts to be assessed. From a practical viewpoint, the proposed approach consists in implementing surveys and focus groups about the social representations at different stages of the assessment process. Through this process, the opinions of the stakeholders about potential or real social impacts of aquaculture may be taken into consideration. However, the technical construction of the relevant impact indicators allowing evaluation of the impacts still have to be done by the researchers.

Abstract

Control of good quality eggs and larvae takes into account the influence of some factors such as temperature, photoperiod, nutrition, stocking conditions,… Up to now, in Percid fishes, it has been demonstrated that gamete quality of captive breeders constitutes one of the principal limiting factor in the production of these species, even more when fish are fed with an artificial dry diet. It has been demonstrated that the dietary fatty acid content might affect the physiology of breeders and their reproductive performances. Therefore, the general objective of the thesis was to understand the mecanisms implicated in the preferential utilization of dietary fatty acids in relation to changes in lipid metabolism, as well as to endocrine changes linked to maturation observed during a reproductive cycle in Percid females, with Eurasian perch as biological model. Indicators of sperm quality were also investigated. We have studied the impact of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the physiology of reproduction, both in vivo and in vitro. The results showed that AA, via its conversion to PGE2 and PGF2 alpha, may have a stimulating role in the oocyte maturation, by enhancing some maturation-inducing steroids, such as the maturational hormone. As observed in mammals, we concluded that the cAMP production in response to PGE2 was probably mediated by an intracellular mechanism via the EP2 receptor. Nevertheless, in our study, the production of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha was conditioned by the EPA/AA ratio in fish tissues, which is dependent upon the EPA/AA ratio found in the diet. Vitellogenin production was also depending on the EPA/AA ratio, with values fluctuating in a similar manner to what was obtained with prostaglandins, just before the spawning season. Sperm and eggs fatty acid compositions were dependent on the fatty acid content of broodstock diet, while indicators of sperm quality were all good in fish fed diets with a high or low DHA/EPA/AA ratio, and egg and larval quality were, (DOCSC03) -- FUNDP, 2009

250. Temperature modifies activity, inter-individual relationships and group structure in a fish.

Abstract

A host of abiotic factors modify fish social behavior. However, few studies have characterized the effects of temperature on behavior. In this study, brown trout Salmo truttafry were reared at 5 different temperatures (4°C, 6°C, 8°C, 10°C, and 12°C). In order to characterize group structure, 3 behavioral parameters were investigated: group social structure (based on inter-individual distances), inter-individual relationships (based on physical contacts), and individual activity. These behavioral parameters were studied at the emergence stage, which corresponds to a switch from a social gregarious life in the gravel to a solitary one in the water column. Data analysis showed that the inter-individual distances increased with increasing temperature, particularly the nearest neighbor distance. The mean number of physical contacts between fry increased at both low and high temperatures. At high temperatures, most fry moved apart from each other after a physical contact. Swimming activity decreased at both the lower and upper temperatures (18% of activity at 4°C, 38% at 8°C, and 12% at 12°C). This study showed that temperature modifies brown trout fry activity, inter-individual relationships, and social behavior, which all affect group cohesion before emergence and can influence their survival and dispersal.
