Doctoral writing in the visual and performing arts poses many challenges for the academy, not the least of which is accounting for the possible relations which can hold between the written and creative/performed components of a doctoral thesis in these fields. This article proposes that the interrelations between the two components in doctoral submissions of this kind can be theorized as being on a continuum of interrelations, with a number of key text types (or archetypes) being manifested. Through textual analysis of the written component only, the different possible relations can be distinguished through the ways in which the creative component is resemiotized in the written text, through both the verbal and visual semiosis of the written component. This enables us to identify a number of ways in which the ‘one’ project can be construed through its two different component parts, casting an important light on debates within the field in terms of the relations between creative practice and research. LINGUISTICS , *CHEMISTRY , *ACADEMIC dissertations , *DOCTORAL degree , *COMMUNICATION , *INTERDISCIPLINARY education - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to describe, through genre analysis guidelines, introductions of 34 chemistry and linguistics doctoral dissertations. These dissertations were submitted during 2003-2007 academic period to the Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, in Chile. According to this analysis, and from the exemplary configuration of a proposal for doctoral theses introductions, the communicative purpose of introducing a doctoral thesis research is to justify the investigation. A finding that stands out is the use of "rhetorical moves" not described in the literature, such as "definitions", "procedure" or "impact", as well as optional ones like "questions", "procedure" or "originality". At the rhetorical level, another relevant finding of this study is the distinction of two audiences: the primary audience and the secondary one, which refer to two different levels of targeted readers. - Abstract
Citation analysis is one of the thrust areas of research in Library and Information Science. It provides very useful insights to librarians and policy makers in terms of which sources to be purchased and what to be replaced. The current study was carried out to understand different characteristics of Physics as a discipline by analysing the citations appended at the end of Doctoral theses of Physics, Tripura University. A total 5640 citations were analysed from 18 theses during the 10 years period of 2007 to 2016. Bradford’s law of scattering of periodical was tested as it did not fit in the particular dataset the appropriateness of Leimkuhler model was also evaluated with the dataset. Journal of Geophysical Research being published from USA is found to be ranked one in the list of core journals. American Chemical Society, USA was found to be the top cited Publisher. The study also disclosed that electronic and subscription based journals receives more citations.

This article derives from an international collaboration between the UFRN and BITRA (Bibliography in Interpreting and Translation – University of Alicante, Spain) in which, given the paucity of data about academic production dealing with Brazilian Translation Studies (TS), we attempt to throw some light about the nature and evolution of TS in Brazil. Our main aim is to present a critical overview of TS in Brazil based on the mining of doctoral theses submitted to Brazilian federal, state or private universities. To this end, we mined BITRA, institutional repositories, the IBICT and the theses and dissertations repository of the CAPES. The systematization of the data was performed following the structure of BITRA, which will be presented in this article together with other bibliometric methodological criteria. As a result, we identified 374 Ph.D. theses dealing with TS and submitted to Brazilian universities, all of which will comprise our main corpus.

Fashion is an essential element for many people. In fact, as the textile field has clearly become more important and professional, the studies related to its communication have proliferated in private and public Universities around Spain. This paper tries to highlight the studies in fashion communication carried out by Spanish Universities in the last years. The selected methodology, the bibliometric study from a content analysis, has allowed us to know the main perspectives analysed and using which methodologies, as well as the most prolific Universities in this field. The results were proved by Delphi with academic specialists in innovation and its show that, with respect to universities, we focus on the triangulation of fashion research from the contributions of Complutense University of Madrid, Polytechnic of Valencia, and the University of Vigo and Malaga. The pertinence of the investigation is determined by the need to perform a review of the state of the art that allows future researchers to continue to deepen in fashion studies., La moda ocupa un papel primordial en la vida cotidiana de las personas.

- Abstract
The goal of this study was to analyze the scientific productivity in Psycho-logy of Spanish universities based on the doctoral theses presented since the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) (academic courses 2007/2008–2017/2018). We analyzed 3,493 theses retrieved through TESEO database, considering academic course, European/International mention, Psychology area, state/private university, auto-nomous community, and productivity ratio per community. The results showed a signifi-cant increase in the number of theses defended compared with previous years, according to the results of prior studies, which might indicate an improvement on the scientific productivity of Spanish universities after the adaptation to the EHEA. It would be advisa-ble the performance of further studies in this line of research in forthcoming years, by using other indicators such as funding and facilities., El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la productividad científica en Psico-logía de las universidades españolas en función de las tesis doctorales presentadas desde la adaptación al Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES) (cursos académicos 2007/2008-2017/2018).

- Abstract
It is often said that successive generations of researchers face an increasing educational burden due to knowledge accumulation. On the other hand, technological advancement over time can improve the productivity of researchers and even change their cognitive processes. This paper presents a longitudinal study (2004-2011) of citation behavior in doctoral theses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. It is found that the number of references cited has increased over the years. At the same time, there has been a decrease in the length of time in the doctoral program and a relative constancy in the culture of the department. This suggests that students are more productive in facing an increased knowledge burden, and indeed seem to encode prior literature as transactive memory to a greater extent, as evidenced by the greater use of older literature. - Abstract
This article analyses scientific growth time series using data for Spanish doctoral theses from 1848 to 2009, retrieved from national databases and an in-depth archive search. Data are classified into subseries by historical periods. The analytical techniques employed range from visual analysis of deterministic graphs to curve-fitting with exponential smoothing and AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average models. Forecasts are made using the best model. The main finding is that Spanish output of doctoral theses appears to fit a quasi-logistic growth model in line with Price's predictions. An additional control variable termed year-on-year General Welfare is shown to modulate scientific growth, especially in the historical period from 1899 to 1939. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BRADFORD'S law (Bibliometrics) , *ACADEMIC dissertations , *PERIODICALS , *PSYCHOLOGY , *PRODUCTIVITY (Linguistics) - Abstract
Bradford's law of scattering is based on the principle that every scientific field is related, however remotely, to everyother field. One hundred and forty one Ph.D. theses accepted in the field of psychology for the award of doctoral degreeswere analysed to identify the Bradford's zones and productivity of journals cited in the theses. The Productivity of citedjournals is measured after dividing the journals into four equal groups. The average rate of productivity of journals in thefirst group is 254 articles, whereas it has considerably gone down to 10.73 articles in the fourth group. The journaldistribution as per the Bradford's law reveals the ratio as 17:46:358 in psychology, dispersion of journal titles in psychologydoes not satisfy the Bradford's Law of Scattering. This article is based on a fundamental assumption, this being that the production of high-quality postgraduate research depends on the proper application of appropriate research methods. A second assumption is that the postgraduate researcher, in attempting to draw up a sound research design and apply appropriate research methods, requires sound guidance and supervision. The hypothesis for this article is, consequently, that the choice of appropriate research methods strongly relates to the topic and purpose of the research and the unit of observation. For the purposes of this article, the authors used the subject of Public Administration. An analysis of 54 doctoral theses in Public Administration validates this hypothesis, because the analysis reveals that there is a definite association between, on the one hand, the topic and purpose of the research and the units of observation, and, on the other hand, the research methods used. This paper seeks to evaluate the presence of grey archaeological research output in databases and archives available in France today. What kind of documents do we find (theses, reports)? In what proportion do we find them in comparison with white literature? How does the data in France compare to that in other countries? How does the online presence of grey literature in archaeology compare to other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences? If there are differences, how can these be explained? We shall base our analysis on DAPHNE, a recently opened French portal for online databases in archaeology, history, and history of religions, and on French repositories and catalogues providing access to full text documents. The quantity of doctoral theses in pedagogical sciences defended each year overpass the rest of the existing sciences in Cuba. For this reason there are many doctors in pedagogical sciences, however their scientific contributions have not been evaluated yet, so it is necessary to determine the indicators in order to evaluate the scientific impact of theses investigations. A group on cienciometric indicators for the evaluation of the scientific impact of doctoral theses in pedagogical sciences is proposed in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of dialectical contradictions in doctoral theses of pedagogical sciences has become a tradition because it reflexes the development obtained in order to identify those contradictory counterparts which are the source of development and at the same time the essence of the scientific problem investigated. However, the quantitative increase of doctoral theses due to the state policy to increase the number of philosophical doctors in college together with the lack of scientific expertise obtained by investigators have provoked frequently the appearance of poorly supported dialectical contradictions that affect the quality and impact of these investigations. Some considerations about this problem that may help to solve that handicap are exposed in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spanish scientific productivity within Psychiatric studies is measured by analyzing the volume of doctoral dissertations carried out by professors of Psychiatry at the different Spanish public universities, between 1993 and 2002, and registered on the official data base Tesis Españolas Ordenadas (TESEO). The sample consists of 126 university professors and associate professors and a total of 294 thesis dissertations. In this study, only those dissertations supervised by a doctor have been taken into account. The resulting proportion is 2.33 dissertations per professor. The most productive professor supervised up to 17 theses; hence, these data result in a mean of 2 theses per year. A total of 28 professors, 22.2% of the sample, supervised 210 theses, which represents 71.42% of the whole production. The university with the highest rate of dissertations on Psychiatry between 1993 and 2002 is the University of Alcalá de Henares, with a proportion of 20 theses per professor, followed by University of Cadiz with 6.66 theses per professor. The University of Extremadura reaches the third place with 5.33 theses per professor. At the end of this paper, some conclusions about the state of the art on this topic have been obtained. At the end of the XX century, with the discovery of numerous financial frauds, the stock market became unstable and an uncertainty as to accounting procedure broke out. Among several cases, one was highlighted: a fall from Enron, one of the largest US companies at that time. Although the case has been extensively studied by several authors, it was not find in the literature a study that pointed out the relevance of the case to the academic productions (dissertations and theses) in Brazil, although the relevance of the theme is common sense. Through results obtained in a bibliometric research that used the keyword "Enron" in the catalog of theses and dissertations of CAPES, 28 stricto sensu postgraduate studies were found between 2002 and 2016. There is a supremacy of master's dissertations in relation to doctoral theses. Evident is also the majority of productions by private institutions, in addition to the concentration of such productions in the Southeast region of Brazil, especially in the state of São Paulo. Another finding relates to the programs that originated the work: Accounting and Business Administration Programs account for 82% of total productions that are linked to Enron in some way. The results of this paper can bridge the academic gap of Enron's relevance to postgraduate teaching in Brazil.----- DOI: 10.18226/23190639.v6n3.05 Ronan Reis Marçal*, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The current society inserted in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) has produced vertiginous changes in relation to breastfeeding. That is why we consider it necessary to analyze the knowledge and scientific production carried out to date on this discipline. From this concern, this research emerges as an interdisciplinary study that aims to give priority to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. The purpose is to investigate the growth and distribution of scientific documents through their analysis and evaluation, in order to gather the scientific production of researchers on breastfeeding. To this end, a sample of 155 Doctoral Theses published in Spanish Universities is used, with the common denominator of the word breastfeeding, in the period that goes from 1980 to 2015. The methodology used is mixed, with qualitative data analysis, framed within a retrospective and descriptive analysis, as well as a quantitative analysis through bibliometric indicators. The aim is to offer a solid and reliable set of systematic, empirical and critical research processes and results, in order to present information on current and future research and innovation trends. [Abstract]: Introduction. This paper explores the social practices of Communication research in Spain. It gathers the results of a questionnaire targeted to actively working professors included in the census of Spanish universities with Graduate and Post-Graduate studies in Communication, researcher’s members of scientific communities and doctorate students in Communication. Methodology. A total of 2,418 researchers were invited to participate and were granted access to the questionnaire by clicking a link, being 838 the number that completed the questions. Results. The study shows a certain mismatch between academic institutional policies and the perception of researchers about them. Discussion. There is noticed the scarce relationship between companies and university in the field of Communication, a relationship that should entail a model of generation of knowledge transferable to the social and labour context as a means for obtaining added value.

Doctoral research is fundamental for the development and consolidation of the different theories that are incorporated into an area of knowledge. In addition, a fundamental added value is attributed in the construction of the theoretical body of a discipline. From this point of view, the theses are an indicator of the evolutionary state of theoretical development and, in turn, constitute the origin of future academic and scientific publications. In recent years, scientific production in the field of public relations and corporate communication has experienced great growth. The publication of doctoral theses also evidences this increase and in turn reflects the interest in this field of communication which, given its nature, is subject to constant change. The doctoral research and its results allow to detect trends in the research lines, as well as to appreciate the evolution in the approaches of the discipline. That is why it is interesting to know the topics, objects of study and authorship and directions of the theses, both to consolidate certain theories and to detect incipient trends. However, there are still very few bibliometric studies of published doctoral theses on public relations and communication, and there is none that addresses joint and comparative production between Spain and Portugal, countries that are very close from a cultural point of view. Therefore, this work carries out a bibliometric analysis of doctoral research in the area of public relations and corporate communication carried out in Spanish and Portuguese universities between 2006 and 2016. For this purpose, TESEO has been used as a Spanish database and RENATES as the reference database in Portugal. The keywords used in the search equations have revolved around the different nomenclatures that define the discipline and its evolution ("public relations", "corporate communication", "strategic communication", "business communication" and "organizational communication"). The result of the search gave a total of 64 theses that made up the analysis sample, of which 84.4% (54 documents) come from TESEO and 15.6% (10 documents) have been obtained through RENATES. The main results show how there has been a considerable increase in the production of doctoral theses in the last two years analyzed in Spain and Portugal. Likewise, it is noted that there is a majority use of the term "public relations" in the two countries against the term "organizational communication" in Portugal and "Corporate Communication" in Spain. On the other hand, there is also a greater representation of applied research compared to that, which deals with a theoretical development, and in an outstanding way, that which analyzes cases. This difference is smaller in Portugal, where a certain balance is observed between the different research categories (theoretical development, applied research and introspective). Finally, the main limitation found is in restricting the search of keywords exclusively to the field "title" of the documents as well as those deficiencies that can be generated in the records of the databases themselves.

For a long time, the assumption prevailed that all scientific texts should conform to a common academic style. Then some papers started to emphasise the specificity of a discourse into scientific disciplines. Now, under the influence of globalization and the shift to teaching in the lingua franca languages, there is a question about the peculiarities of a national style of academic discourse. The article continues a series of studies in the field of sociological discourse and its changing after the introduction of SFL-based CLIL approach in non-western sociological doctoral programmes. The current paper is focusing specifically on tools for the structuring of science written discourse that are significantly different in different cultures. The research is interdisciplinary since it is performed at the intersection of sociology and ethnolinguistics. The method is an analysis of discourse markers as one of the widely recognized approaches in ethnolinguistics to the identification of differences in scientific writing in Russian and English. Data collected from doctoral theses in Russian and in English from the field of sociology. It is shown that the average number of discourse markers at 1000 words-3.89 in Russian theses and 1.75 in doctoral theses written in English. The authors suggest that these variations are associated with the structure and goals of a scholarly paper. English academic genres are more empirical, whereas Russian focused on the development of theory. The results of the study clarify the reasons for refusal of Russian professors of scientific advising in English, and their negative attitude towards the English-speaking model of a thesis, traditional for Western science.

This study reveals the main characteristics of Spanish research related to tutorial action, through a scientometric analysis, of the doctoral theses indexed in the TESEO database for the period 1980-2016. The thesis search has been extended with related terms, delivered by the literature, recovering 245 doctoral theses. The tutorial action is a topic of great conceptual richness and may well be considered a topic of interest in research. The time series and the diachronic productivity have been elaborated in three cycles, in addition to other variables related to the content and methodologies. The findings show that their production has not yet achieved a logistical stability of growth, and the production of doctoral theses is concentrated in a small number of institutions and directors. Communication is a relatively young discipline in the academic world, at least in comparison with others, although it enjoys a notable presence in the university, both in Spain and in the rest of the World. For this reason, it is appropriate to examine what research in this field is like. The aim of this paper is to analyse relevant indicators of scientific production in Spanish universities with formal undergraduate and graduate studies in communication. The approach adopted is to analyse the contributions made by women in this field. Two indicators have been analysed: the presentation of doctoral dissertations, and leadership in research and development (R&D) projects financed by state grants. The time frame for the analysis is 2007-2013. During this period, we have studied a total of 977 doctoral dissertations—of which 492 were submitted by women—and 143 projects that obtained funding in state R&D of which 43 had a woman as principal researcher. We obtained the data from the Mapcom Research Project database (www.mapcom.es). Descriptive statistics have been used as a methodology in order to present the characteristics of the objects, perspectives, and research methods dominant in both, doctoral dissertations and research projects. This exploratory work is a first approximation to the state of communication research carried out and/or led by women in Spanish universities. Among the results obtained, it is worth highlighting the observed inequality in the distribution of directive roles in research: while the number of dissertations presented by women and men during the analyzed period is similar, the number of funded R&D projects led by women is disproportionately smaller than those led by men.

- Abstract
The objective of this investigation was to analyze scientific production assessed by indexed doctoral theses in the Ordered Spanish Theses (TESEO) database, on the topic of the sport of handball in Spain. Productivity was analyzed on the basis of variables grouped by contextual information, methodologies and procedures. Seventy-two indexed theses from between 1976 and 2021 were analyzed. A progressive increase was identified in scientific production based on these theses during this period. The scientific disciplines that presented the highest number of theses were Sport Sciences ( n = 33) and Sport Pedagogy ( n = 19). The main results show that quantitative approaches are the most common ( n = 49), doctoral theses using descriptive studies based on systematic observation represent the majority (73%), the predominant type of data collection was the use of cross-sectional studies (70.8%) versus longitudinal studies (26.4%), and the most used sampling method was that of convenience ( n = 65). The results make it possible to ascertain the reality of this research topic, the methodological positioning and research tendencies, and to draw the basic lines for development.

The growing accessibility of grey literature has drawn attention to a research product which is still little known: the doctoral thesis. The present study analyses the overall Spanish production of doctoral theses during the period 1977-2014, as recorded in the TESEO database, focusing specifically on the final 20 years of this period. The evolution of the production of theses is described, as well as their distribution by subject and university. A comparison is made with scientific production data extracted from Web of Science and Scopus regarding growth, subject matter and institutional distribution. An important correlation is detected between the production of theses and scholarly output in both databases. This correlation grew stronger starting in 2007, when a growth pattern of theses emerged that paralleled the exponential growth of Spanish scientific output reflected in Web of Science and Scopus. As for the distribution by subject and institution, relevant changes occurred between 1995-99 and 2010-14. Specifically, the output in the health sciences diminished from 17,8% in 1995-99 to 12,3% in 2010-14. In the same interval, the Complutense University lost its leading advantage in the production of doctoral theses, as it was almost matched by the University of Barcelona. A more progressive distribution of theses among universities is also detected for the latter period. This distribution is also studied along with WoS data on scientific production and the percentage of high impact production per institution. The general rise in the WoS / theses production ratio observed is frequently higher in institutions with a greater percentage of high impact production.

(DIPF/Orig.)
