Quantum confinement is the divergence,at small crystallite size,of the electronic structure of semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantumdots, from the properties of larger crystals of the same materials.Although the extinction properties of quantum dots in the dispersedstate have been extensively studied, many applications for quantumdots require the formation of a solid material which nonetheless retainsa size-dependent electronic structure. The complex index of refraction(or complex dielectric function), including the extinction coefficient,is critical information for interpretation of optoelectronic measurementsand use of quantum dot solids in optoelectronic devices. Here, spectroscopicellipsometry is used to provide an all-optical method to determinethe thickness, complex index, and extinction coefficient of thin filmsmade of quantum-confined materials through the visible and near-infraredspectral ranges. The characteristic, size-dependent spectral featuresin the absorption of monodisperse quantum dots are readily translatedinto spectral variations of the index of refraction. The complex indicesof refraction of CdSe and PbS quantum dot solids depend strongly onquantum dot size and the processing conditions of the thin film, includingligand exchange and annealing. The dielectric functions of quantumdot solids are dominated by the fill fraction of quantum dots, withonly secondary influence from interparticle interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Doping is a process in which atomic impurities are intentionally added to a host material to modify its properties. It has had a revolutionary impact in altering or introducing electronic, magnetic, luminescent, and catalytic properties for several applications, for example in semiconductors. Here we explore and demonstrate the extension of the concept of substitutional atomic doping to nanometre-scale crystal doping, in which one nanocrystal is used to replace another to form doped self-assembled superlattices. Towards this goal, we show that gold nanocrystals act as substitutional dopants in superlattices of cadmium selenide or lead selenide nanocrystals when the size of the gold nanocrystal is very close to that of the host. The gold nanocrystals occupy random positions in the superlattice and their density is readily and widely controllable, analogous to the case of atomic doping, but here through nanocrystal self-assembly. We also show that the electronic properties of the superlattices are highly tunable and strongly affected by the presence and density of the gold nanocrystal dopants. The conductivity of lead selenide films, for example, can be manipulated over at least six orders of magnitude by the addition of gold nanocrystals and is explained by a percolation model. As this process relies on the self-assembly of uniform nanocrystals, it can be generally applied to assemble a wide variety of nanocrystal-doped structures for electronic, optical, magnetic, and catalytic materials. Self-assembly of multicomponent anisotropic nanocrystals with controlled orientation and spatial distribution allows the design of novel metamaterials with unique shape- and orientation-dependent collective properties. Although many phases of binary structures are theoretically proposed, the examples of multicomponent assemblies, which are experimentally realized with colloidal anisotropic nanocrystals, are still limited. In this report, we demonstrate the formation of binary and ternary superlattices from colloidal two-dimensional LaF3 nanodisks and one-dimensional CdSe/CdS nanorods via liquid interfacial assembly. The colloidal nanodisks and nanorods are coassembled into AB-, AB2-, and AB6-type binary arrays determined by their relative size ratio and concentration to maximize their packing density. The position and orientation of anisotropic nanocrystal building blocks are tightly controlled in the self-assembled binary and ternary lattices. The macroscopic orientation of the superlattices is further tuned by changing the liquid subphase used for self-assembly, resulting in the formation of lamellar-type binary liquid crystalline superlattices. In addition, we demonstrate a novel ternary superlattice self-assembled from two different sizes of nanodisks and a nanorod, which offers the unique opportunity to design multifunctional metamaterials. The ability to control both the thickness and the lateral dimensions of colloidal nanoplatelets offers a test-bed for area and thickness dependent properties in 2D materials. An important example is Auger recombination, which is typically the dominant process by which multiexcitons decay in nanoplatelets. Herein, we uncover fundamental properties of biexciton decay in nanoplatelets by comparing the Auger recombination lifetimes based on interacting and noninteracting formalisms with measurements based on transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, we report that electron–hole correlations in the initial biexcitonic state must be included in order to obtain Auger recombination lifetimes in agreement with experimental measurements and that Auger recombination lifetimes depend nearly linearly on the lateral area and somewhat more strongly on the thickness of the nanoplatelet. We also connect these scalings to those of the area and thickness dependencies of single exciton radiative recombination lifetimes, exciton coherence areas, and exciton Bohr radii in these quasi-2D materials. We present a general synthesis fora family of n-type transparentconducting oxide nanocrystals through doping with aliovalent cations.These monodisperse nanocrystals exhibit localized surface plasmonresonances tunable in the mid- and near-infrared with increasing dopantconcentration. We employ a battery of electrical measurements to demonstratethat the plasmonic resonance in isolated particles is consistent withthe electronic properties of oxide nanocrystal thin films. Hall andSeebeck measurements show that the particles form degenerately dopedn-type solids with free electron concentrations in the range of 1019to 1021cm–3. Among colloidal nanocrystals, 2D nanoplatelets offer a unique set of properties with exceptionally narrow luminescence and low lasing thresholds. Furthermore, their anisotropic shape expands the playground for the complex design of heterostructures where spectra but also scattering rates can be engineered. A challenge that still remains is to combine shell growth which makes NPLs stable, with spectral tunability. Indeed, most reported shelled nanoplatelets end up being red emitters due to a loss of quantum confinement. Here, the combination of both lateral and in‐plane confinements within a single heterostructure is explored. A CdS/CdSe/CdS/CdZnS core–crown–crown shell structure that enables yellow emission is grown and that is responsive to a large range of excitation including visible photons, X‐ray photons, electron beams, and electrical excitations. k.p simulations predict that emission tunability of up to several 100 s of meV can be obtained in ideal structures. This material also displays stimulated emission resulting from bi‐exciton emission with a low threshold. Once integrated into an LED stack, this material is compatible with sub‐bandgap excitation and exhibits high luminance. Transparent conducting oxides, such as doped indium oxide, zinc oxide, and cadmium oxide (CdO), have recently attracted attention as tailorable materials for applications in nanophotonic and plasmonic devices such as low‐loss modulators and all‐optical switches due to their tunable optical properties, fast optical response, and low losses. In this work, optically induced extraordinarily large reflection changes (up to 135%) are demonstrated in bulk CdO films in the mid‐infrared wavelength range close to the epsilon near zero (ENZ) point. To develop a better understanding of how doping level affects the static and dynamic optical properties of CdO, the evolution of the optical properties with yttrium (Y) doping is investigated. An increase in the metallicity and a blueshift of the ENZ point with increasing Y‐concentrations is observed. Broadband all‐optical switching from near‐infrared to mid‐infrared wavelengths is demonstrated. The major photoexcited carrier relaxation mechanisms in CdO are identified and it is shown that the relaxation times can be significantly reduced by increasing the dopant concentration in the film. This work could pave the way to practical dynamic and passive optical and plasmonic devices with doped CdO spanning wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the mid‐infrared region. The purple membrane (PM) isolated from the bacteria Halobacterium salinarum (H. salinarum) arranges the transmembrane proton pump bacteriorhodopsin (bR) in a 2D hexagonal crystalline lattice. Here, PM sheets containing native bR bend into tube‐like structures with open edges under acidic pH conditions. When decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), these same PM sheets yield a sealed tube assembly. Upon Rhodamine B (Rh B) sequestration inside the sealed tube, a dramatic decrease in Rh B fluorescence lifetime (τf) from 1.5 ns (unencapsulated) to 14 ps (encapsulated) is observed. The dramatic decrease in lifetime is attributed to energy transfer between AuNPs and Rh B. Subsequent release from the AuNP–PM capsules triggered by an increase in pH shows that 93% of Rh B is recovered (τ = 14 min) due to the capsules' unfolding. The hybrid AuNP–PM material highlights the utility of multicomponent ensembles (i.e., lipid bilayer, protein array, and NPs) by demonstrating that complex, multistimuli 3D responses can lead to multiplexed functions such as controlling energy transfer in the confined, encapsulated state and breaking the energy pair via molecular release in response to a change in pH. Colloidal quantum wells are two-dimensional materials grown with atomically-precise thickness that dictates their electronic structure. Although intersubband absorption in epitaxial quantum wells is well-known, analogous observations in non-epitaxial two-dimensional materials are sparse. Here we show that CdSe nanoplatelet quantum wells have narrow (30–200 meV), polarized intersubband absorption features when photoexcited or under applied bias, which can be tuned by thickness across the near-infrared (NIR) spectral window (900–1600 nm) inclusive of important telecommunications wavelengths. By examination of the optical absorption and polarization-resolved measurements, the NIR absorptions are assigned to electron intersubband transitions. Under photoexcitation, the intersubband features display hot carrier and Auger recombination effects similar to excitonic absorptions. Sequenced two-color photoexcitation permits the sub-picosecond modulation of the carrier temperature in such colloidal quantum wells. This work suggests that colloidal quantum wells may be promising building blocks for NIR technologies. Multiple infrared lasing and detection technologies exploit intersubband transitions of epitaxial quantum wells, but such transitions are mainly limited to the mid-infrared. As they have gained maturity, colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) have also expand the spectral range over of which they could be used for photonic and optoelectronic applications. In particular, the infrared use of NCs has become of utmost interest to develop cost‐effective alternatives to current technologies. It is then critical not to let the material dictate the light–matter interaction, which is why the coupling of NCs to photonic cavities has been proposed. For infrared NCs, this approach has first been devoted to the control of absorption with in mind the increase of the signal magnitude for detectors. A Lot of efforts have been focused on the use of metallic metasurfaces. However, these generate significant optical losses and yield low quality factor. Here, this study rather focus on the coupling of infrared NCs to a dielectric mirror cavity. HgTe/CdS core‐shell NCs are used and integrated into a cavity made of aperiodic dielectric mirrors. The effect of the substrate is systematically study on spectral linewidth, carrier dynamic, and emission directivity. The cavity is shown to narrow the PL by a factor 10, while focusing the emission over a 12° angle. Monitoring the power dependence of the emission, this study shows that the cavity leads to 250 K increase in the effective electronic temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intraband relaxation in all‐inorganic cesium lead tribromide (CsPbBr3) and hybrid organic–inorganic formamidinium lead tribromide (FAPbBr3) nanocrystals is experimentally investigated for a range of particle sizes, excitation energies, sample temperatures, and excitation fluences. Hot carriers in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals consistently exhibit slower cooling than FAPbBr3 nanocrystals in the single electron–hole pair per nanocrystal regime. In both compositions, long‐lived hot carriers (>3 ps) are only observed at excitation densities corresponding to production of multiple electron–hole pairs per nanocrystal—and concomitant Auger recombination. These presented results are distinct from previous reports in bulk hybrid perovskite materials that convey persistent hot carriers at low excitation fluences. Time‐resolved photoluminescence confirms the rapid cooling of carriers in the low‐fluence (single electron–hole pair per nanocrystal) regime. Intraband relaxation processes, as a function of excitation energy, size, and temperature are broadly consistent with other nanocrystalline semiconductor materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HgTe nanocrystals offer a unique spectral tunability with both absorption and emission covering the near and mid‐infrared as well as the THz window. Nevertheless, a very limited amount of work is dedicated to electroluminescence from this material. An efficient diode not only requires designing a structure that achieves a high electrical efficiency (i.e., efficient electron and hole injections), but also finding a way to efficiently extract the emitted photons. The shift from visible to infrared certainly demands revisiting the strategies proposed for shorter wavelengths (microlens arrays). Here, a metallic grating is used to enhance the photoluminscence signal up to a factor of 4 while enabling directionality in the emission, which is driven by the grating period. Structure-activity relationships and the influence of particle size and shape on the partial- and photo-oxidation of methanol on nanocrystalline anatase TiO 2 were investigated using temperature-programmed desorption. The study employed two distinct nanoparticle morphologies: truncated bipyramids exposing primarily {101} facets, and flatter platelets exposing primarily {001} surfaces, whose nominal sizes ranged from 10 to 25 nm. The platelets were found to be more active for thermally-driven reactions, such as coupling of methoxide groups to produce dimethyl ether, and deoxygenation to produce methane. A dependence of the reactivity of {001} facets for the coupling of methoxide groups to produce dimethyl ether on facet size was also observed. In contrast to the thermally-driven reactions, the bipyramidal nanoparticles were observed to be more active for a range of photochemical reactions, including oxidation and coupling to produce methyl formate, and photo-decomposition of surface methoxide species. This study also shows how well-defined nanocrystals can be used to help bridge the materials gap between studies of single crystal model catalysts and their high surface area industrial analogs. Semi‐transparent perovskite solar cells (ST‐PeSCs) have tremendous potential as solar windows owing to their higher efficiency and visible transmittance. However, studies toward this application are still nascent, particularly in unraveling the interplay between how the perovskite composition impacts the achievable device performance and stability. Here, the role of A‐ and X‐site modification in APbX3 perovskites is studied to understand their influence on these factors. Through detailed experimental and simulation work, it is found that a perovskite composition consisting of cesium (Cs) and formamidinium (FA) at the A‐site delivers the best device performance over a range of band gaps, which are tuned by changes to the X‐site anion. Using this optimized perovskite composition, power conversion efficiencies of 15.5% and 4.1% are achieved for ST‐PeSCs with average visible transmittance values between 20.7% and 52.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the CsFA‐based ST‐PeSCs show excellent long‐term stability under continuous illumination and heating. The stability of the precursor solutions across each of the studied compositions has also been considered, showing dramatic differences in the structural properties of the perovskites and their device performance for all mixed A‐site compositions possessing the archetypal methyl ammonium species, while also confirming the superior stability of the CsFA precursor solutions. [Display omitted] The dielectric permittivity of a material encapsulates the essential physics of light-matter interaction into the material's local response to optical excitation. Photo-induced modulation of the permittivity can enable an unprecedented level of control over the phase, amplitude, and polarization of light. Therefore, the detailed dynamic characterization of technology-relevant materials with substantially tunable optical properties and fast response times is a crucial step to realize tunable optical devices. This work reports on the extraordinarily large permittivity changes in zinc oxide thin films (up to −3.6 relative change in the real part of the dielectric permittivity at 1600 nm wavelength) induced by optically generated free carriers. We demonstrate broadband reflectance modulation up to 70% in metal-backed oxide mirrors at the telecommunication wavelengths, with picosecond-scale relaxation times. The epsilon near zero points of the films can be dynamically shifted from 8.5 µm to 1.6 µm by controlling the pump fluence. The modulation can be selectively enhanced at specific wavelengths employing metal-backed zinc oxide disks while maintaining picosecond-scale switching times. This work provides insights into the free-carrier assisted permittivity modulation in zinc oxide and could enable the realization of novel dynamic devices for beam-steering, polarizers, and spatial light modulators. The force-generating mechanism of dynein differs from the forcegenerating mechanisms of other cytoskeletal motors. To examine the structural dynamics of dynein's stepping mechanism in real time, we used polarized total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy with nanometer accuracy localization to track the orientation and position of single motors. By measuring the polarized emission of individual quantum nanorods coupled to the dynein ring, we determined the angular position of the ring and found that it rotates relative to the microtubule (MT) while walking. Surprisingly, the observed rotations were small, averaging only 8.3°, and were only weakly correlated with steps. Measurements at two independent labeling positions on opposite sides of the ring showed similar small rotations. Our results are inconsistent with a classic power-stroke mechanism, and instead support a flexible stalk model in which interhead strain rotates the rings through bending and hinging of the stalk. Mechanical compliances of the stalk and hinge determined based on a 3.3-µs molecular dynamics simulation account for the degree of ring rotation observed experimentally. Together, these observations demonstrate that the stepping mechanism of dynein is fundamentally different from the stepping mechanisms of other well-studied MT motors, because it is characterized by constant small-scale fluctuations of a large but flexible structure fully consistent with the variable stepping pattern observed as dynein moves along the MT. Synthetic methods produce libraries of colloidal nanocrystals with tunable physical properties by tailoring the nanocrystal size, shape, and composition. Here,we exploit colloidal nanocrystal diversity and design the materials, interfaces, and processes to construct all-nanocrystal electronic devices using solution-based processes. Metallic silver and semiconducting cadmium selenide nanocrystals are deposited to form high-conductivity and high-mobility thin-film electrodes and channel layers of field-effect transistors. Insulating aluminum oxide nanocrystals are assembled layer by layer with polyelectrolytes to form high-dielectric constant gate insulator layers for low-voltage device operation. Metallic indium nanocrystals are codispersed with silver nanocrystals to integrate an indium supply in the deposited electrodes that serves to passivate and dope the cadmiumselenide nanocrystal channel layer.We fabricate all-nanocrystal field-effect transistors on flexible plastics with electron mobilities of 21.7 square centimeters per volt-second. Excitations of free electrons and optical phonons are known to permit access to the negative real part of relative permittivities (ϵ'<0) that yield strong light-matter interactions. However, negative ϵ' arising from excitons has been much less explored. Via development of a dielectric-coating based technique described herein, we report fundamental optical properties of two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs), composed of alternating layers of inorganic and organic sublattices. Low members of 2DHPs (N=1 and N=2) exhibit negative ϵ' stemming from the large exciton binding energy and sizable oscillator strength. Furthermore, hyperbolic dispersion (i.e., ϵ' changes sign with directions) occurs in the visible range, which has been previously achieved only with artificial metamaterials. Such naturally occurring, exotic dispersion stems from the extremely anisotropic excitonic behaviors of 2DHPs, and can intrinsically support a large photonic density of states. We suggest that several other van der Waals solids may exhibit similar behaviors arising from excitonic response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuning the properties of a pair of entangled electron and hole in a light-induced exciton is a fundamentally intriguing inquiry for quantum science. Here, using semiconducting hybrid perovskite as an exploratory platform, we discover that Nd 2+ -doped CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite exhibits a Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction under cryogenic and photoexcitation conditions. The feedback to such interaction between excitons in perovskite and the localized spins in Nd 2+ is observed as notably prolonged carrier lifetimes measured by time-resolved photoluminescence, ~10 times to that of pristine MAPbI 3 without Nd 2+ dopant. From a mechanistic standpoint, such extended charge separation states are the consequence of the trap state enabled by the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the light-induced exciton and the localized 4 f spins of the Nd 2+ in the proximity. Importantly, this Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction can be modulated by either increasing Nd 2+ doping concentration that enhances the coupling between the exciton and Nd 2+ 4 f spins as evidenced by elongated carrier lifetime, or by using an external magnetic field that can nullify the spin-dependent exchange interaction therein due to the unified orientations of Nd 2+ spin angular momentum, thereby leading to exciton recombination at the dynamics comparable to pristine MAPbI 3 ., (© 2024.
