Abstract Riverbank erosion is a global problem with significant socio-economic impacts. Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) has recently emerged as a promising technology for improving the mechanical properties of soils. The present study investigates the potential of selectively enriched native calcifying bacterial community and its supplementation into the riverbank soil of the Brahmaputra river for reducing the erodibility of the soil. The ureolytic and calcium carbonate cementation abilities of the enriched cultures were investigated with reference to the standard calcifying culture of Sporosarcina pasteurii (ATCC 11859). 16S rRNA analysis revealed Firmicutes to be the most predominant calcifying class with Sporosarcina pasteurii and Pseudogracilibacillus auburnensis as the prevalent strains. The morphological and mineralogical characterization of carbonate crystals confirmed the calcite precipitation potential of these communities. The erodibility of soil treated with native calcifying communities was examined via needle penetration and lab-scale hydraulic flume test. We found a substantial reduction in soil erosion in the biocemented sample with a calcite content of 7.3% and needle penetration index of 16 N/mm. We report the cementation potential of biostimulated ureolytic cultures for minimum intervention to riparian biodiversity for an environmentally conscious alternative to current erosion mitigation practices.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Ceftolozane/tazobactam is a cephalosporin/β-lactamase inhibitor combination with activity against Gram-negative bacilli. Here we report the use of ceftolozane/tazobactam in Canada using a national registry. Methods: The CLEAR registry uses a REDCapTM online survey to capture details associated with clinical use of ceftolozane/tazobactam. Results: Data from 51 patients treated in 2020 with ceftolozane/tazobactam are available. Infections treated included hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (37.3% of patients), ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (15.7%), bone and joint infection (11.8%), complicated intra-abdominal infection (7.8%) and complicated skin and skin-structure infection (7.8%). Moreover, 17.6% of patients had bacteraemia and 47.1% were in intensive care. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was primarily used as directed therapy for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections (92.2% of patients). Ceftolozane/tazobactam was used because of resistance to (86.3%), failure of (11.8%) or adverse effects from (2.0%) previously prescribed antimicrobials. Ceftolozane/tazobactam susceptibility testing was performed on isolates from 88.2% of patients. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was used in combination with another antimicrobial active against Gram-negative bacilli in 39.2% of patients [aminoglycosides (15.7%), fluoroquinolones (9.8%) and colistin/polymyxin B (7.8%)]. The dosage regimen was customised in all patients based on creatinine clearance. The treatment duration was primarily >10 days (60.8% of patients), with microbiological success in 60.5% and clinical success in 64.4% of patients. Moreover, 7.8% of patients had adverse effects not requiring drug discontinuation. Conclusion: In Canada, ceftolozane/tazobactam is used as directed therapy to treat a variety of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa. It is commonly used in combination with other antimicrobials with relatively high microbiological/clinical cure rates and an excellent safety profile.

The present study comprised 12 post-pubertal acyclic buffalo heifers (40-50 months of age) and 6 postpartum lactating acyclic buffalo cows. Animals were monitored for ovarian changes by ultrasonography along with blood sampling on different days of hormonal treatment, on day 27 of protocol and on day 12, 21 and 35 post-insemination. Total 10 animals (55.56%; 9/12 heifers; 1/6 buffalo) conceived at fix timed artificial insemination (FTAI) and remaining 8 animals were considered as non-conceived for comparison. Significantly higher number of large follicles was observed on day 7 with reduction in mean diameter of subordinate follicles at day 26, decreased plasma levels of FSH on day 17, 24 and 26; increased plasma level of LH on day 27, with higher insulin level in conceived animals as compared to non-conceived animals. Significant reduction in number of large follicles was recorded on day 21 post- AI in conceived animals. The difference in the levels of progesterone was statistically significant between conceived and non-conceived animals at day 35 post-AI. There were highly significant positive correlations among population of different size follicles, total follicles and largest and subordinate follicles diameter, whereas they had negative correlation with plasma protein and cholesterol both in conceived and non-conceived animals, but their correlations with plasma LH, insulin and estrogen were significant and positive only among non-conceived group.

Abstract Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a common cyanotic congenital heart disease. Its surgical correction requires ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction (RVOTO) relief, with transannular patch enlargement (TAPE) of the pulmonary valve. The first successful repair of TOF was reported in 1954 and consisted of closure of the VSD through a large right ventriculotomy, and RVOTO relief with TAPE of the pulmonary valve. To predict the intraoperative requirements and postoperative course of patients with this condition, various evaluation indices are available that can provide a good indication of patient prognosis. We performed this study in a male child (age, 1 year, 9 months; weight 8.5 kgs.) who underwent intracardiac repair for TOF as a primary procedure. We calculated the pulmonary vein index (PVI), McGoon ratio, and Nakata index. The McGoon ratio was 1.97, Nakata index was 539.22 mm2/m2, and PVI was 368.12 mm2/m2. The child had an uneventful post‐operative course with no symptoms of low cardiac output syndrome. He was ventilated for 122 h. The length of intensive care unit and hospital stays were 11 and 14 days, respectively. The PVI is a novel indicator offering prognostic indications for pediatric cardiac patients who have undergone surgical correction of TOF.

Barking deer is found in dense tropical and subtropical forests of Asia. It is listed as “least concerned” by the International Union of Conservation of Nature and as “vulnerable” in Nepal, where it is also protected. Due to the habitat loss and fragmentation by human activities, barking deer abundance is decreasing, which may even ultimately lead to its extinction. This in turn might negatively affect local ecosystem such as the abundance of the endangered common leopard, for which barking deer is the main prey species in the mid-hills of Nepal. We therefore need to know factors affecting barking deer abundance and its habitat preferences. To determine these factors, we recorded barking deer either by direct sighting or by any evidence of its indirect presence observed through transect surveys in January and February, 2019. To analyze habitat preference, the presence of barking deer was set to 1 if the barking deer or any sign of its presence were observed “used plots,” or to 0 if the barking deer or any sign of its presence were not observed (“habitat availability plot”). We measured main four ecological drivers such as forest management regime, microclimate, disturbance and food resources, which include 11 habitat characteristics in spots where barking deer was present, and in randomly selected spots. We found that elevation, slope, distance from settlement, presence of tree species, depth of leaf litter and percentage cover of leaf litter were most significantly affecting its presence. These results can serve as guidelines for local authorities to prevent decline in abundance of barking deer.

Objectives: Ceftobiprole is an advanced-generation cephalosporin with a favourable safety profile. Published data on the clinical use of ceftobiprole are limited. We report use of ceftobiprole in Canadian patients using data captured by the CLEAR registry. Methods: The CLEAR registry uses the web-based research data management program REDCap™ (online survey) to facilitate clinicians entering details associated with their clinical experiences using ceftobiprole. Results: Data were available for 38 patients treated with ceftobiprole. The most common infections treated were endocarditis (42.1% of patients), bone and joint infection (23.7%) and hospital-associated bacterial pneumonia (15.8%). 92.1% of patients had bacteraemia and 21.1% were in intensive care. Ceftobiprole was used because of failure of (71.1%), resistance to (18.4%) or adverse effects from (10.5%) previously prescribed antimicrobial agents. Ceftobiprole was primarily used as directed therapy for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections (94.7% of patients). Ceftobiprole susceptibility testing was performed on isolates from 47.4% of patients. It was used concomitantly with daptomycin in 55.3% of patients and with vancomycin in 18.4% of patients. Treatment duration was primarily >10 days (65.8% of patients) with microbiological success in 97.0% and clinical success in 84.8% of patients. 2.6% of patients had gastrointestinal adverse effects. Conclusion: In Canada to date, ceftobiprole is used as directed therapy to treat a variety of severe infections caused by MRSA. It is primarily used in patients failing previous antimicrobials, is frequently added to, and thus used in combination with daptomycin or vancomycin with high microbiological and clinical cure rates and an excellent safety profile.

The intelligence community uses "structured analytic techniques" to help analysts think critically and avoid cognitive bias. However, little evidence exists of how techniques are applied and whether they are effective. We examined the use of the analysis of competing hypotheses (ACH)--a technique designed to reduce "confirmation bias." Fifty intelligence analysts were randomly assigned to use ACH or not when completing a hypothesis testing task that had probabilistic ground truth. Data on analysts' judgement processes and conclusions were collected using written protocols that were then coded for statistical analyses. We found that ACH-trained analysts did not follow all of the steps of ACH. There was mixed evidence for ACH's ability to reduce confirmation bias, and we observed that ACH may increase judgement inconsistency and error. It may be prudent for the intelligence community to consider the conditions under which ACH would prove useful and to explore alternatives.

Rapidly changing environmental conditions (bioclimatic, anthropogenic, topographic, and vegetation-related variables) are likely to alter the spatial distribution of flora and fauna. To understand the influence of environmental variables on the Blue bull’s distribution and to identify potential conflict zones, the habitat suitability analysis of the Blue bull was performed using ensemble modeling. We modelled the distribution of the Blue bull using an extensive database on the current distribution of the Blue bull and selected 15 ecologically significant environmental variables. We used ten species distribution modeling algorithms available in the BIOMOD2 R package. Among the ten algorithms, the Random Forest, Maxent, and Generalized linear model had the highest mean true skill statistics scores, ensuring better model performance, and were considered for further analysis. We found that 22,462.57 km2 (15.26%) of Nepal is suitable for the Blue bull. Slope, precipitation seasonality, and distance to the road are the environmental variables contributing the most to the distribution of Blue bull. Of the total predicted suitable habitats, 86% lies outside protected areas and 55% overlaps with agricultural land. Thus, we recommend that the future conservation initiatives including appropriate conflict mitigation measures should be prioritized equally in both protected areas and outside protected areas to ensure the species’ survival in the region.

Background: Online Registration System (ORS) is latest method of appointment in various hospital, which is very easy method and ultimately shorter queues of hospital. No research has been conducted which shows any challenges faced by patients during online registration in hospitals. Aims: The main aim of this study was to investigate challenges faced by patients during online registration in tertiary level hospital, Uttarakhand. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study using non-probability sampling techniques was conducted on 400 patients visiting outpatient department (OPD) using self-structured questionnaire. Results: Majority (99.5%) of participants were familiarised how to operation of smartphone or electronic devices for online registration. Majority (71%) participants were knowing that online OPD registration system is a method of registration in hospital, but only few (26%) were doing it. Main barrier faced by participants that they do not know how to do online registration process, that why they did not do online registration of their patients. Conclusion: The study concludes that online registration process should be simpler so that people can be easily use. More awareness campaign by mass media communication also required, so that people should know how to effectively use ORS.

The response of five types of biochar (Lantana camara, Ipomoea carnea, rice husk, sawdust, no biochar) on growth and yield attributes of potato was evaluated. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six replications in rainfed areas of two different environments (Jiri in 2018 and Pawati in 2019) of Nepal. The popular early maturing potato variety 'Desiree' was used in the experiment. The spacing was maintained 60 cm between rows and 25 cm between plants in the plot size of 7.2 m2. Seed tubers were planted in the 1st week of February and harvested in the 4th week of May. Recommended fertilizers (100:100:60 kg ha–1 NPK + 20 t ha–1 farmyard manure) and biochars at 2 t ha–1 were applied to the soil. Seed tubers were completely covered with an equal amount of biochar before covering with the soil. The results revealed that the total yield and marketable yield of potato varied with biochars types. The potato tuber yield was found higher and red ants infestation was lower in plots applied with biochars as compared to control plots (without biochars). The use of biochars derived from Lantana camera produced the highest number of tubers (6.1 tubers plant–1), the greatest weight of tubers (286.1 g plant–1) and the least damage of red ants on tubers (4.7%) followed by sawdust (6.0 tubers plant–1, 263.6 g tuber weight plant–1 and 7.8% damaged tubers by red ants). The findings provide new information on the understanding of biochar effect on increased marketable yield of potato in rainfed lands by reducing damage from red ants.

However, the rate of MTB and rifampicin resistant-MTB (RR-MTB) in the Nepalese setting has not been studied extensively. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the rate of MTB and RR-MTB and further determine the factors associated with it.Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study, among national representative data of 990 consecutive presumptive TB resister of patients subjected to the GeneXpert test that presented to the tuberculosis referral hospital, was conducted over a one year period from February 2018 to January 2019. Significance for the difference for categorical data was performed by Chi-square test and factors associated with MTB and RR-MTB were assessed using binary logistic regression yielding OR with 95%CI.Results: Of total 990 presumptive tuberculosis analyzed cases, median ages of the patients were 39± 19.09 years and two-thirds of the patients were male 653 (66.0%). The estimated prevalence of MTB in presumptive TB patients was 13.8% (95%CI: 11.88%– 16.16%), and risk for MTB was significantly associated with previously treated patients: OR: 10.4 (P< 0.001). The estimated prevalence of RR-MTB in MTB confirmed patients was 10.2% (4.97%– 15.1%). Our study confirmed no association of RR-TB with age, sex, ethnicity, geographical diversity and previous history of treatment failure (P> 0.05).Conclusion: The overall prevalence of MTB and RR-MTB was high in Nepalese study population, and that being previously treated with anti-TB drug remained significant predictors for MTB; proactive measures are urgently needed to address the challenge of prompt diagnosis, early management and improved monitoring of treatment to limit the emergence drug-resistant MTB strains in the community.Keywords: MTB prevalence, RR-MTB prevalence, risk factors, Nepal

Abstract Aim To determine what experiences do residential care aides (RCAs) have with individuals living with oral malodour in a long‐term care (LTC) facility? Design Study investigation was done using an interpretive qualitative approach paired with a social constructivism interpretive framework. Methods The study was conducted in May of 2015 through face‐to‐face interviews with RCAs, which were recorded and transcribed verbatim, observations of RCAs in their work environment, as well as RCA personal logs of their daily experiences with odour during caregiving. Thereafter, data were analysed and coded for emerging themes. Results Five major themes were identified after grouping the codes: 1) attitudes and behaviours when caring for residents with malodour; 2)RCA knowledge of oral malodour; 3) level of job satisfaction among RCAs that care for residents with malodour; 4) culture and malodour; and 5) challenges of care giving compounded by malodour. These themes depict the overall experiences of study participants.

c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) are members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family and are derived from three genes, Jnk1-3. These kinases are involved in cellular responses to homeostatic insults, such as inflammation and apoptosis. Furthermore, increased JNK expression and activation are associated with debilitating neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. We previously reported elevated levels of phosphorylated JNK (pJNK), indicative of JNK hyperactivation, in the CA1 hippocampus of chronically epileptic rats. We also showed that pharmacological inhibition of JNK activity reduced seizure frequency in a dose-dependent fashion (Tai TY et al., Neuroscience, 2017). Building on these observations, the objectives of this current study were to investigate the timeline of JNK activation during epileptogenesis, and to identify the JNK isoform(s) that undergo hyperactivation in the chronic epilepsy stage. Western blotting analysis of CA1 hippocampal homogenates showed JNK hyperactivation only during the chronic phase of epilepsy (6–9 weeks post-status epilepticus), and not in earlier stages of epileptogenesis (1 h, 1 day, and 1 week post-status epilepticus). After enrichment for pJNK by immunoprecipitation, we identified JNK2 as the only significantly hyperactivated JNK isoform, with expression of the 54 kDa pJNK2 variant elevated to a greater extent than the 46 kDa pJNK2 variant. Expression of the total amounts of both JNK2 variants (phosphorylated plus non-phosphorylated) was reduced in epilepsy, however, suggesting that activation of upstream phosphorylation pathways was responsible for JNK2 hyperactivation. Since our prior work demonstrated that pharmacological inhibition of JNK activation had an antiepileptic effect, JNK2 hyperactivation is therefore likely a pathological event that promotes seizure occurrences. This investigation provides evidence that JNK2 is selectively hyperactivated in epilepsy and thus may be a novel and selective antiepileptic target.

Grain yield stability on new finger millet genotypes through G×E interaction analysis is an important task for finger millet breeding programs. Sixteen promising finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.) genotypes were evaluated in randomized complete block design replicated over two locations viz Kabre, Dolakha; and Vijaynagar, Jumla, Nepal over three years (2017, 2018 and 2019). The stability parameters were computed for grain yield after Eberhart and Russell. The pooled analysis of variance revealed that the genotypes and genotype × environment (G × E) interaction were significant for grain yield. The genotypes KLE-559 produced the highest grain yield (3.32 t/ha) followed by GE-0356 (3.31 t/ha) and KLE-236 (3.25 t/ha). The genotypes namely ACC#2843 (b=1.12), KLE-559 (b=1.15) and ACC#2827-1 (b=1.1516) had more than unity regression indicating the genotypes suitability towards favorable environments. GGE biplot showed genotype KLE-559 was more stable genotype. Thus, this genotype was recommended for release as variety to improve finger millet production in mid hill environments of Nepal. In an era of international terrorism, interviews with high-value detainees may have the dual purpose of extracting useful information and of disengagement. We conducted a small-scale, qualitative study using in-depth, individual interviews with 11 experienced interviewers in the Southeast Asia region and Australia, in order to provide insights into the types of interviewing strategies employed in terrorist rehabilitation. Our findings highlight the potential efficacy of creating a physically comfortable and relaxed interview setting, and of using interview strategies that focus on rapport-building, principles of social persuasion and elements of procedural justice, along with a patient and flexible stance to questioning. We suggest that interviewers performing rehabilitation interviews with high-value detainees ought to be trained to use the social approach to interviewing.

Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat to the world’s ability to prevent and treat infections. Links between quantitative antibiotic use and the emergence of bacterial resistance are well documented. This study presents benchmark antimicrobial use (AMU) rates for inpatient adult populations in acute-care hospitals across Canada. Methods In this retrospective surveillance study, acute-care adult hospitals participating in the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program (CNISP) submitted annual AMU data on all systemic antimicrobials from 2009 to 2016. Information specific to intensive care units (ICUs) and non-ICU wards were available for 2014–2016. Data were analyzed using defined daily doses (DDD) per 1000 patient days (DDD/1000pd). Results Between 2009 and 2016, 16–18 CNISP adult hospitals participated each year and provided their AMU data (22 hospitals participated in ≥1 year of surveillance; 11 in all years). From 2009 to 2016, there was a significant reduction in use (12%) (from 654 to 573 DDD/1000pd, p = 0.03). Palatal radicular groove (PRG) is developmental anomaly of root, which when present is associated with periodontal and endodontic problems. Different treatment modalities are available for its management, such as periodontal flap surgery, endodontic management, sealing of PRG with various cements, bone graft procedure for intrabony defect, extraction with intentional replantation after sealing or removal of a PRG, and endodontic treatment as well as the use of various growth factors. Success of the therapy depends on the type, depth, and extent of PRG, presence or absence of intrabony defect, vitality of involved tooth, and types of materials used to seal PRG. This study reports management of PRG with Biodentine® and platelet-rich fibrin in a 44-year-old systemically healthy female patient.

Iron deficiency anaemia remains a public health problem, particularly in children aged 6-59 months. This study assessed factors associated with iron deficiency anaemia among children aged 6-23 months, 24-59 months and 6-59 months in Tanzania. Data for this cross-sectional study were extracted from the 2015-16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey and Malaria Indicator Survey (2015-16 TDHS-MIS). The study covered 8014 children aged 6-59 months and their mothers. Iron deficiency anaemia was defined (haemoglobin < 11g/dL). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses that adjust for clustering and sampling weights were conducted to describe the associations between anaemia and potential confounding variables. The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among children aged 6-23 months, 24-59 months and 6-59 months were 76%, 49% and 59%, respectively. Factors associated with increased odds of iron deficiency anaemia among children aged 6-23 months included a mother being employed, being a male child, child perceived to small size at birth by mothers, a mother being anaemic and children belonging to the poorest socio-economic quintile. In addition, being a mother with no schooling, children not being dewormed, a mother being anaemic, delivering a baby at home, child fever and stunting, were factors associated with increased odds of iron deficiency anaemia among children aged 24-59 months. Factors associated with increased odds of iron deficiency anaemia among children aged 6-59 months were: a mother being employed, being a mother with no schooling, being a male child, belonging to the 6-59 months age bracket, a mother having a BMI of between 19 and 25 kg/m2, a mother being anaemic, having a baby at home, children belonging to bigger households, child fever and stunting. Interventions to minimise the burden of iron deficiency anaemia in children should target employed and/or anaemic mothers, poor and rich households, as well as male children.

Different genetic and environmental factors like altitude, temperature, light radiation, etc. affect the production of phytoconstituents like ascorbic acid, phenol, flavonoid, tannin, etc. So, it is necessary to evaluate phytoconstituents quantitatively and qualitatively because of their different medicinal values. This study is aimed at evaluating and comparing ascorbic acid concentration, total phenol, and flavonoid content in citrus species grown in different places in Western Nepal. For this, fruit collected from Lamjung and Nawalparasi was peeled, and collected juice was extracted with ethanol. Ascorbic acid was estimated using titration with dichlorophenolindophenol dye, and total phenol was estimated using Folin reagent; whereas, flavonoid content was determined by aluminum chloride colorimetric assay. The result showed the maximum ascorbic acid concentration in the fruit juice of Citrus maxima collected from Lamjung, i.e., 2.98±0.161 mg/100 ml, and the least concentration was recorded on extract of Citrus limon collected from Nawalparasi, i.e., 1.005±0.205 mg/100 ml. The total phenol content was comparatively higher in Citrus maxima and Citrus aurantifolia collected from Lamjung, i.e., 12.48±0.40 mg GAE/gm, respectively. Flavonoid content was comparatively higher in Citrus maxima collected from Nawalparasi, i.e., 484.466±3.055 mg QE/gm. This study showed a variation in the concentration of chemical constituents between different places in Western Nepal. This might be due to differences in climatic conditions, environmental factors, altitude, temperature, etc. This study helps to reflect the best-suited altitude for commercial cultivation of the citrus species as these phytochemicals have different medicinal values. Also, this study can help the food industry to use an alternative source of synthetic antioxidant such as ascorbic acid, phenol, and flavonoid. And local people will economically benefit by the commercial cultivation of citrus fruits.

Bacterial biopolymers produced extracellularly due to microbial metabolic activities have gained considerable interest in various engineering applications. The major advantages of bacterial biopolymers is their in-situ production and low water solubility, eliminating the requirement for mixing in granular substrates such as soils. These properties make them highly desirable and preferable to manufactured biopolymers. But for any engineering applications, it is crucial to understand the mechanical properties of these materials, which have been less explored. This investigation is the first attempt to quantify the nano and macro mechanical properties of in-situ bacterial biopolymer dextran produced by bacterial culture Leucononstoc mesenteroids. The fundamental mechanism of bacterial biopolymer-based cementation has been revealed through their morphographic and nanomechanical testing via atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation and scanning electron micrographs. The effect of bacterially produced biopolymers and commercial biopolymers on the macro-mechanical properties of soils was then investigated via needle penetration tests. In-situ biopolymers were found to be highly effective in stabilizing soils with comparable mechanical properties as commercial biopolymers. This study has demonstrated novel methods for testing in situ polymers and opened up the channels for their applications in numerous subsurface as well as surface applications.

Antibiotic therapy is one of the most important strategies to treat bacterial infections. The overuse of antibiotics, especially in the perinatal period, is associated with long-lasting negative consequences such as the spread of antibiotic resistance and alterations in the composition and function of the gut microbiota, both of which negatively affect human health. In this review, we summarize recent evidence about the influence of antibiotic treatment on the neonatal gut microbiota and the subsequent negative effects on the health of the infant. We also analyze the possible microbiome-based approaches for the re-establishment of healthy microbiota in neonates.

Attractive red-coloured pericarp is one of the most important factors in the consumer decision to purchase litchi(Litchi chinensis Sonn.). Red colour of the pericarp turns brown within 2-3 days after harvest which reduces themarketability and commercial value of the fruit drastically and finally incurring huge financial losses to growers.This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of using combinational application of sodium hypochlorite withsodium chlorite and carnauba wax on the quality of harvested litchi during storage (2016–17). Postharvest treatmentsincluded sequential dipping in sodium hypochlorite (0.2%) (T1), sodium hypochlorite (0.2%) + sodium chlorite (0.05%) (T2), sodium hypochlorite (0.2%) + carnauba wax (10%) (T3) and untreated (control) (T4). Treated fruit werethen packed inplastic punnets and stored at 2°C and 90-95% relative humidity (RH). All the treatments signiï¬cantlyreduced pericarp browning over control. The most remarkable effect was obtained in fruits treated with sodiumhypochlorite (0.2%) in combination with sodium chlorite (0.05%) as evidenced by delayed anthocyanin degradation,lower polyphenol oxidase activity, fruit decay and weight loss. This treatment also maintained better fruit quality asindicated by higher total soluble solids and phenolic content in fruits, thus can be used as a cost-effective method toreduce pericarp browning and prolong marketable life of litchi up to 25 days.
