A model for linking personality traits, general ethical judgments regarding credit card use and behavioral intention not to pay credit card expenses in Taiwan is proposed. External locus of control is seen to predict intention to not repay credit card expenses. Relationship marketing strategies are seen to aid in mitigating cardholders' intention to passively not repay.

This study examines the antecedents of online consumers' estimates of the risk of credit card theft victimization and whether risk perceptions are empirically linked to online lifestyles. Using telephone survey data from a sample of adult Internet users in the state of Florida (N = 573), the regression analysis shows that socially vulnerable (e.g., lower socioeconomic status consumers) and financially impulsive respondents perceive higher levels of risk when using their credit card online. Results from the negative binomial models show that consumers with higher risk scores spend significantly less time on the Internet and make fewer purchases from Web sites, yet financially impulsive respondents fail to engage in such risk-reduction strategies. Overall, these findings suggest that key features of Ferraro's risk interpretation model generalize to the online victimization context. Payment card rewards programs have become increasingly popular in the United States. But do consumers really benefit from rewards? In the United States, rewards are paid for primarily by the fees charged to merchants, and merchants may pass on the fees to consumers as higher retail prices. Further, some regulators and analysts claim that rewards may send consumers distorted price signals, which in turn may lead consumers to choose payment methods that are less efficient to society. Card networks and merchants have taken opposing sides in the rewards debate. Card networks claim their fee structures, including rewards, are crucial to achieving the right balance between merchant acceptance and consumer usage of their cards. Rewards can also reduce the total costs to society by inducing more consumers to switch from costly payment methods, such as checks, to less costly payment cards. Merchants benefit as well, they claim, because rewards card users make higher-value transactions than other consumers. Finally, more generous rewards are even more beneficial to consumers because they receive more as they make more card transactions. Merchants, on the other hand, claim they pay for the rewards through their fees to card issuers. They argue that competitive pressures and customer expectations prevent them from rejecting cards even though the fees outweigh their benefits. They reject the idea that accepting rewards cards is profitable despite the higher fees. Instead, they argue that customers with rewards cards spend more than those without rewards cards simply because their incomes are higher--not because they receive more rewards. Finally, they argue that more generous rewards actually harm consumers, because higher fees to merchants lead to higher prices for goods and services. Hayashi seeks to provide insight into these issues by considering whether current rewards programs benefit consumers and society. While definitive answers await further data, the analysis in this article suggests that the currently provided payment card rewards programs, especially credit card rewards programs, are not likely to be efficient. Brazil's urban mass-market was studied, and it was found that very few multinational retailers are competing in the mass-market. Mom-and-pop stores and large local single-format retail stores dominate the Brazilian mass-market, composing more than 60% of the country's apparel sales. Above 60% of survey respondents agreed that it is perfectly all right to shop for product on credit.

The number of students accumulating credit card debt--and the amount of debt itself--on college campuses is increasing. If high-risk credit and health behavior are associated, health behavior interventions might apply to high-risk credit behavior. Objective: The authors' purpose was to examine these possible associations. Participants and Methods: They used a retrospective design with existing data from a sample of 45,213 US college students and several ordinal regression models, which corresponded with high priority college health issues. Results: Students with high-risk credit behavior were more likely to have driven after drinking, used amphetamines in the previous 30 days, felt functionally impaired by depression in the previous 12 months, had a higher body mass index (BMI), or had a lower grade-point average (GPA). They were less likely to have participated in vigorous physical activity, used condoms for oral or vaginal sex in the prior 30 days, or used marijuana. The findings support the notion that high-risk health and credit behaviors are associated. Conclusions: Further research could clarify the nature of this relation.
