This paper reviews the state of the art of research and industry practice on demand response and the new methodology of transactive energy. Demand response programs incentivize consumers to align their demand with power supply conditions, enhancing power system reliability and economic operation. The design of demand response programs, performance of pilot projects and programs, consumer behaviors, and barriers are discussed. Transactive energy is a variant and a generalized form of demand response in that it manages both the supply and demand sides. It is intended for a changing environment with an increasing number of distributed resources and intelligent devices. It utilizes the flexibility of various generation/load resources to maintain a dynamic balance of supply and demand. These distributed resources are controlled by their owners. However, the design of transaction mechanisms should align the individual behaviors with the interests of the entire system. Transactive energy features real-time, autonomous, and decentralized decision making. The transition from demand response to transactive energy is also discussed.

Pursuant to TCC Judgement No. 17 in 2023, the part of Paragraph 84 that forbidding physicians making advertisement for themselves of the Medical Care Act, in virtue of which non-medical care institutions shall not make advertisements for medical care, was declared unconstitutional and immediately invalid. The situation in Germany, where the physician was forbidden from advertising, but have been allowed to do so since 2002, was similar to Taiwan. It would be in this essay to introduce two important legal norms apropos the advertisement of physicians: Professional Regulations of the State Medical Associations and Medicinal Products Act. Background: This study is to evaluate the associations between long-term survival and stage I breast cancer by examining the hormonal receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) status. Materials and methods: A total of 1595 breast cancer patients who were seen from 1990 to 2008 with surgery as first treatment and pathology stage I (T1N0) were included in this study. HR and HER2 status were used to approximate breast cancer subtypes. Additionally, ten-year relapse-free survival (RFS) rate and failure patterns of each subtype were evaluated. Multivariate analyses were performed in each subtype to identify the risk factors of recurrence. Results: Luminal-like (HR positive and HER2 negative) stage I patients showed a 10-year RFS rate of 89.5%, HER2 positive 92.9%, triple negative 91.1%, and unclassified subtype 86.2% (p = 0.089), respectively. The 10-year overall survival was 94.1% in luminal-like subtype, 90.1% in HER2, 94.5% in triple negative, and 85.3% in unclassified subtype. The independent recurrence risk factors in luminal-like subtype were ≤40 years of age (hazard ratio [HR] 2.2, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1–4.4), nuclear grade III (HR 2.7, CI, 1.4–5.3), and tumor >1.5 cm (HR 1.8, CI 1.0–3.4), and in unclassified subtype ≤40 years of age, tumor >1.5 cm, and adjuvant hormonal therapy. No risk factors were identified in HER2 or triple negative subtype. Conclusions: The factors associated with poor prognosis of stage I breast cancer vary by subtype. No risk factors were identified in HER2 subtype or triple negative patients. Tumor size >1.5 cm, age ≤40 years and nuclear grade 3 are the risk factors associated with poor prognosis in luminal-like subtype.

We found some obvious abnormal strain induced by heavy rainfall from borehole strainmeters deployed in Western Taiwan. The strain induced by rainfall can be divided into two parts, one is the quick response for extra loads of rainwater on the ground, and another one is the slow response for rainwater infiltrating into the strata. The quick and slow rainfall responses of areal strain data are analyzed using the technique of recursive digital filtering. Moreover, the rainfall impact functions of the studied stations are calculated using deconvolution. We found, in most cases, the response strain will reach the maximum in half an hour after heavy rainfall, and then show an exponential decay, it might persist more than 200 h depending on the hydrogeological condition around the station. Whereas the river flowing beside the station will help accelerating the runoff dispersion and reducing rainfall decay time in the hill or mountain region. We also compare the results after calibration in term of isotropic and vertical coupling individually. We found that the response strains are smaller in vertical coupling rather than isotropic coupling. The effects of debris avalanches caused by intensive rainfall in the mountain areas can be viewed as two types of rock deformation: generated only under the influence of rainfall and generated by the increased load in the river channels due to rainfall-induced landslides or debris flow. When the cumulative rainfall exceeds a certain threshold, the strain response curves show a noticeable anomaly likely due to the effects of the debris flow events in places prone to landslides.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is a contagious viral (PRRSV) disease in pigs characterized by poor reproductive health, increased mortality, and reductions in growth rates. PRRSV is known to implement immuno-antagonistic mechanisms to evade detection and mute host responses to infection. To better understand the cellular immunosignature of PRRSV we have undertaken transcriptome and immunomodulatory studies in PRRSV-infected porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs). We first used genome-wide transcriptome profiling (RNA-seq) to elucidate PRRSV-induced changes in the PAM transcriptome in response to infection. We found a number of cellular networks were altered by PRRSV infection, including many associated with innate immunity, such as, the NLRP3 inflammasome. To further explore the role(s) of innate immune networks in PRRSV-infected PAMs, we used an NLRP3-specific inhibitor, MCC950, to identify the potential functionality of the inflammasome during PRRSV replication. We found that PRRSV does quickly induce expression of inflammasome-associated genes in PAMs. Treatment of PAMs with MCC950 suggests NLRP3 inflammasome activation negatively impacts viral replication. Treatment of PAMs with cell culture supernatants from macrophages subjected to NLRP3 inflammasome activation (via polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) transfection), prior to PRRSV infection resulted in significantly reduced viral RNA levels compared to PAMs treated with cell culture supernatants from macrophages subjected to NLRP3 inflammasome inhibition (MCC950 treatment/poly I:C transfection). This further supports a role for NLRP3 inflammasome activation in the innate macrophagic anti-PRRSV immune response and suggests that PRRSV is sensitive to the effects of NLRP3 inflammasome activity. Taken together, these transcriptome and immunoregulatory data highlight the complex changes PRRSV infection induces in the molecular immune networks of its cellular host.

In this study, an alternative method is developed to replace chemical synthesis to produce glycyl-histidyl-lysine (GHK) tripeptides with a bacterial fermentation system. The target GHK tripeptides are cloned into expression plasmids carrying histidine-glutathione-S-transferase (GST) double tags and TEV (tobacco etch virus) cleavage sites at the N-terminus. After overexpression in Escherichia coli (E. coli) BL21 cells, the recombinant proteins are purified and recovered by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). UV-vis absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate the chemical and biological properties of the recombinant GHK tripeptides. The results demonstrated that one recombinant GHK tripeptide can bind one copper ion to form a GHK-Cu complex with high affinity, and the recombinant GHK peptide to copper ion ratio is 1:1. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) of the copper ions indicated that the oxidation state of copper in the recombinant GHK-Cu complexes here was Cu(II). All of the optical spectrum evidence suggests that the recombinant GHK tripeptide appears to possess the same biophysical and biochemical features as the GHK tripeptide isolated from human plasma. Due to the high binding affinity of GHK tripeptides to copper ions, we used zebrafish as an in vivo model to elucidate whether recombinant GHK tripeptides possess detoxification potential against the cardiotoxicity raised by waterborne Cu(II) exposure. Here, exposure to Cu(II) induced bradycardia and heartbeat irregularity in zebrafish larvae; however, the administration of GHK tripeptides could rescue those experiencing cardiotoxicity, even at the lowest concentration of 1 nM, where the GHK-Cu complex minimized CuSO4-induced cardiotoxicity effects at a GHK:Cu ratio of 1:10. On the other hand, copper and the combination with the GHK tripeptide did not significantly alter other cardiovascular parameters, including stroke volume, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening. Meanwhile, the heart rate and cardiac output were boosted after exposure with 1 nM of GHK peptides. In this study, recombinant GHK tripeptide expression was performed, along with purification and chemical property characterization, which revealed a potent cardiotoxicity protection function in vivo with zebrafish for the first time.

This study examines the compliance motivation of students and Freeters when facing a marginalization risk situation evoked by priming. Freeter (part-time employers), NEET (not in education, employment, or training), and Hikikomori (social withdrawal) represent the socio-economically marginalized population in Japan. People at higher risk of becoming NEET and Hikikomori have shown a motivation pattern deviant from mainstream Japanese culture, including lower willingness to conform to in-group members, thus showing less cultural fit (Norasakkunkit and Uchida, 2014). In this study we explore the effect of the macro socio-economic situation (job-hunting prospects being good or bad) on individual's compliance motivation in both students and Freeters. Sixty-five Kyoto University students and 74 Freeters were randomly assigned to one of the two priming conditions (marginalization risk or non-marginalization) before completing the NEET-Hikikomori Risk (NHR) scale and measurements of compliance motivation to conform to in-group members or to be self-consistent (Cialdini et al., 1999). Twenty-three control group students and 22 control group Freeters were also recruited online for comparison. Results showed that marginalization risk priming led to lower tendency to be self-consistent among students, but did not lead to lower tendency to conform to in-group members. For Freeters, marginalization risk priming led to higher compliance motivation to conform to in-group members. The results confirmed the framework proposed by Toivonen et al. (2011) that both Freeters and students in Japan have ritualist reactions, continuing to maintain the cultural norms despite the difficulty of attaining the cultural goals.

Background Context: Spinal manipulation (SM) is a common treatment for neck and back pain, theorized to mechanically affect the spine leading to therapeutic mechanical changes. The link between specific mechanical effects and clinical improvement is not well supported. SM's therapeutic action may instead be partially mediated within the central nervous system. Purpose: To introduce brain-based models of pain for spinal pain and manual therapy research, characterize the distributed central mechanisms of SM, and advance the preliminary validation of brain-based models as potential clinical biomarkers of pain. Study Design: Secondary analysis of two functional magnetic resonance imaging studies investigating the effect of thoracic SM on pain-related brain activity: A non-controlled, non-blinded study in healthy volunteers (Study 1, n = 10, 5 females, and mean age = 31.2 ± 10.0 years) and a randomized controlled study in participants with acute to subacute neck pain (Study 2, n = 24, 16 females, mean age = 38.0 ± 15.1 years). Methods: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed during noxious mechanical stimulation of the right index finger cuticle pre- and post-intervention. The effect of SM on pain-related activity was studied within brain regions defined by the Neurologic Pain Signature (NPS) that are predictive of physical pain. Results: In Study 1, evoked mechanical pain (p < 0.001) and NPS activation (p = 0.010) decreased following SM, and the changes in evoked pain and NPS activation were correlated (rRM2 = 0.418, p = 0.016). Activation within the NPS subregions of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC, p = 0.012) and right secondary somatosensory cortex/operculum (rS2_Op, p = 0.045) also decreased following SM, and evoked pain was correlated with dACC activity (rRM2 = 0.477, p = 0.019). In Study 2, neck pain (p = 0.046) and NPS (p = 0.033) activation decreased following verum but not sham SM. Associations between evoked pain, neck pain, and NPS activation, were not significant and less clear, possibly due to inadequate power, methodological limitations, or other confounding factors. Conclusions: The findings provide preliminary evidence that SM may alter the processing of pain-related brain activity within specific pain-related brain regions and support the use of brain-based models as clinical biomarkers of pain. The interferon- (IFN-) γ expression is elicited in response to microbial infections and activates immune surveillance by antimicrobial immune elements to induce microbial killing. Patients with adult-onset immunodeficiency who suffer from recurrent infections with microbes, particularly nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), commonly display genetic defects in IFN-γ signaling as well as the generation of anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies (autoAbs). Because IFN-γ is an activator of macrophage differentiation and a proinflammatory activator of innate immunity, the blockade effects of the autoAbs present in NTM patient serum on IFN-γ are hypothesized to regulate the antimicrobial function of macrophages. In the presence of patient serum, IFN-γ-induced type 1 macrophage (M1) differentiation was inhibited in PMA-stimulated human monocytic THP-1 cells. Treatment with patient serum significantly blocked the production of proinflammatory factors, including cytokines/chemokines and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, by M1 macrophages. Importantly, IFN-γ-facilitated phagocytosis and degradation of heat-killed mycobacterium were decreased by cotreatment with patient serum. These results show the blockade activity of anti-IFN-γ autoAbs on IFN-γ-mediated antimicrobial immunity in macrophages.

To alleviate the vibration effect of the feed drive system, a traditional approach is to apply notch filters to suppress vibrations in the velocity loop. The current approach is to adjust the notch filter parameters such as the center frequency, damping and depth based on observing the frequency response diagram of servo velocity closed loop. In addition, the notch filters are generally provided in the velocity loop control for the commercialized controllers such as FANUC, Siemens, etc. However, the resonance of the transmission system also appears in the position loop when the linear scale is used as the position feedback. The notch filter design without consideration of the resonance behavior of the position loop might cause degradation of performance. To overcome this problem, the paper proposes an innovative method which could automatically determine the optimal parameters of the notch filter under the consideration of resonance behavior of position loop. With the optimal parameters, it is found that both the gains of position and velocity loop controller could be increased such that the bandwidths of the position/velocity loops are higher. Based on the simulation results, the rising time is improved by 33% and the time for reaching the steady state is improved by 72% as comparing the cases of using the optimal approach and traditional approach.

Plantation forests are increasing rapidly in the world in order to alleviate deforestation and degradation of natural forests, along with providing various goods and services. While monoculture plantations have been the dominant type of plantation in practice and well-recorded in research, in the face of intensifying climate change and resource scarcity, there is a growing interest in mixed-species plantations. Agroforestry systems are also catching the attention of foresters, smallholders and landowners. However, there are relatively limited number of studies on successful species mixtures. This paper first reviews the progression of monocultures and mixed-species, followed by the comparisons of advantages, disadvantages and effects on the surrounding natural ecosystems between these two types of plantations. The paper further investigates combinations of species with complementary traits for efficient use of limiting resources associated with improvement in growth development and production of tree species, as well as examining some other challenges in mixed-species. In addition, it is helpful to select and combine tree/crop species in mixtures based on complementary traits that maximise positive and minimise negative interactions and using the advance molecular technologies for genetic analysis. With careful design and proper management, mixed-species plantations with two, three or four species can be more productive and have more advantages in biodiversity, economy and forest health over monocultures. Many researchers are still working on different projects to explore the potential benefits and to promote the applications of mixed-species plantations and agroforestry.
