[Abstract]: Nowadays around 46% of food production around the world requires refrigeration, which is generally provided either by active vapour-compression (based on refrigerants with liquid–gas transitions) or passive cold-storage (based on solid-to-liquid phase change materials, SL-PCMs). However, in order to avoid fluid losses during the transitions, new thermomaterials with solid–solid transitions are desired for both applications. In this work, we find that [DBA][BF4] (DBA = di-n-butylammonium) is a promising thermomaterial with solid–solid phase transitions. This compound presents thermal properties of great interest not only for active barocaloric refrigeration, but also for passive cold-storage, which make this a unique multipurpose thermomaterial. The observed cold-storage capacity is very close to that of commercial SL-PCMs (E ∼ 135 kJ kg−1), while the pressure-induced thermal changes (DS ∼ [200–270] J K−1 kg−1) are superior to those of most barocaloric materials, operating under lower pressures (p ∼ [500–1000] bar). Moreover, the operating temperature range of this material is very adequate for food preservation (250–310 K), which is a great advantage over most barocaloric materials. Beyond the thermal properties, we perform deep structural characterization, which reveals a progressive structural disorder of the [DBA]+ cations and [BF4]− anions as the origin of such thermal properties, which will help the future rational design of enhanced thermomaterials.

Nucleon knockout experiments using beryllium or carbon targets reveal a strong dependence of the quenching factors, i.e., the ratio (Rs) of theoretical to the experimental spectroscopic factors (C2S), on the proton-neutron asymmetry in the nucleus under study. However, this dependence is greatly reduced when a hydrogen target is used. To understand this phenomenon, exclusive H-1(Ne-17, 2p F-16) and inclusive C-12(Ne-17, 2p 1(6)F)X, 1(2)C(Ne-17, F-16)X as well as 1H(Ne-17,(16) F)X(X-denotes undetected reaction products) reactions with F-16 in the ground and excited states were anal- ysed. The longitudinal momentum distribution of F-16 and the correlations between the detached protons were studied. In the case of the carbon target, there is a significant deviation from the predictions of the eikonal model. The eikonal approximation was used to extract spectroscopic factor values (CS)-S-2. The experimental (CS)-S-2 value obtained with C target is markedly lower than that for H target. This is interpreted as rescattering due to simultaneous nucleon knockout from both reaction partners, Ne-17 and C-12.

[Abstract] The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of a structural adhesive in an aggressive setting such as the marine environment. For this purpose, an ageing procedure is carried out under marine environmental conditions and a comparison of the properties before and after the process is performed. This is especially important as the characteristics of an adhesive can be heavily affected by factors such as temperature and humidity. For the assessment of the mechanical properties of the material bulk tensile tests are conducted, digital image correlation (DIC) is also employed to obtain parameters such as Poisson’s ratio or Young’s modulus. A dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is also carried out, on which the time-temperature superposition principle (TTS) is applied to make a long-term prediction of the behaviour of the adhesive, constructing the master curves for dynamic loads by means of a frequency test and for sustained loads through a creep test. This ageing procedure has led to a reduction in the strength of the material, but has also made it more ductile and flexible, while the master curve obtained from the frequency sweeps shows a smaller dependence of frequency in the aged material and the master curve obtained from the creep tests shows a similar behaviour for both the aged and unaged material.

[Abstract]: The TTS package has been developed in R software to predict the mechanical properties of viscoelastic materials, at short and long observation times/frequencies by applying the Time Temperature Superposition (TTS) principle. TTS is a physical principle used in material science to estimate mechanical properties beyond the experimental range of observed times/frequencies by shifting data curves obtained at other temperatures relative to a reference temperature in the dataset. It is a methodology related to accelerated life-tests and reliability, whereas the TTS library is one of the first open source computational tool to apply the TTS principle. This R package provides free computational tools to obtain master curves that characterize materials from a thermal-mechanical approach. The TTS package also proposes, implements and explains our own method to obtain the shift factors and the master curve in a TTS analysis, based on horizontal shifting of the first derivative function of viscoelastic properties. This procedure provides shift factors estimates and smooth master curve estimates using B-spline fitting, in a fully automatic way, without assuming any parametric expression. Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) and Arrhenius TTS parametric models are also implemented in the TTS package. They can be fitted from shifts obtained by the our first derivative based method.

Un desarrollo sostenible en el que se consuma sin comprometer los recursos futuros, respetando la integridad y los derechos de las personas, y promoviendo un desarrollo económico equilibrado. Por ello se llevan a cabo prácticas sostenibles como lo es el uso de listas de sustancias restringidas en fabricación. La creación de listas restringidas en fabricación es una práctica común en cualquier empresa, ya que es un método regulado por cada uno de los países y por sus propias leyes. El caso es que las leyes sobre el uso de sustancias químicas son más restrictivas en unos lugares que en otros. El Reglamento de Registro, evaluación, autorización y restricción de sustancias químicas (REACH) es un reglamento comunitario europeo de 18 de diciembre de 2006 y es la legislación más restrictiva a nivel mundial y la legislación vigente en Europa en la actualidad. Cualquier producto internacional que llegue a europa debe cumplir con los estándares impuestos por el REACH. Actualmente aumenta el número de ecolabels (etiquetas ecológicas) que tienen información de primera mano sobre las actualizaciones en la legislación y mantienen al consumidor al día sobre las sustancias restringidas. Una de las ecolabels más utilizada en marcas de ropa y calzado europeas es la Oeko-tex 100. El propósito de este trabajo es crear una lista de sustancias restringidas en fabricación para una empresa ficticia. The word sustainability permeates more and more deeply in the minds of people, reaching the point of consuming some brands before others by showing that they are sustainable brands. But this is not a matter of personal opinions or marketing strategies. This excessive consumption and mistreatment of the environment reduces the longevity of the planet, which is why changing towards sustainable development has become a necessity. A sustainable development in which it is consumed without compromising future resources, respecting the integrity and rights of people, and promoting balanced economic development. For this reason, sustainable practices are carried out, such as the use of lists of restricted substances in manufacturing. The creation of restricted lists in manufacturing is a common practice in any company, since it is a method regulated by each of the countries and by their own laws. The fact is that the laws on the use of chemical substances are more restrictive in some places than in others. The Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a European Community regulation of December 18, 2006 and is the most restrictive legislation worldwide and the current legislation in Europe today. Any international product that reaches Europe must comply with the standards imposed by REACH. Currently, the number of ecolabels (ecological labels) that have first-hand information on the updates in the legislation and keep the consumer up to date on restricted substances is increasing. [Resumen] El dolor es definido por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) como “una experiencia emocional desagradable, asociada a una lesión tisular real o potencial”. Esta experiencia es reconocida por casi todo el mundo y es considerada un problema frecuente en la sociedad actual. El dolor tiene, además, repercusiones a nivel económico y asistencial. En España, el dolor está presente en un 26,9% de la población general no hospitalizada, siendo el 17,6% dolor crónico. La prevalencia del dolor crónico va desde un 17% hasta un 70%, siendo más frecuente en mujeres que en hombres y estando asociada a enfermedades degenerativas y personas de más de 65 años. Aunque esté demostrado que el dolor crónico presenta una relación directa con la calidad de vida, existen escasos estudios que traten específicamente sobre la prevalencia del dolor crónico en el complejo anatómico tobillo-pie y su relación con la calidad de vida y funcionalidad. Es por ello por lo que la orientación este estudio se enfoca a poder conocer la prevalencia del dolor crónico en el complejo anatómico tobillo-pie en el contexto de una clínica podológica y como este afecta al día a día, a la calidad de vida y a la funcionalidad de los pacientes. 1.2 Objetivos El objetivo principal del presente estudio ha sido determinar la prevalencia de dolor crónico en el complejo anatómico tobillo-pie en pacientes que acuden a la Clínica Universitaria de Podología de la Universidad de A Coruña (CUP) así como analizar la relación entre la intensidad del dolor y el funcionamiento diario en pacientes que acuden a la CUP y presentan dolor crónico en el complejo anatómico tobillo-pie. Through the positions of the authors; those who defend that design is science and those who state that it is not, an analysis is made of those aspects on which they are based to adopt one or another position. In turn, the study examines the concepts of Science and Design, their purposes, meeting points and disagreements. Likewise, it seeks to reflect in which aspects of the work of design activity scientific knowledge can be produced. All this with the pur-pose of continuing to reflect on design as a generator of knowledge and science., O trabalho visa abordar as diversas opiniões que há aproximadamente 10 anos provocam o debate – com mais força – sobre o Design como produtor de Ciência. Pelas posições dos autores; Os que defendem que o design é ciência e os que afirmam que não, faz-se uma análise dos aspectos em que se baseiam para adotar uma ou outra posição. Por sua vez, o estudo examina os conceitos de Ciência e Design, suas finalidades, pontos de encontro e desencontro. Da mesma forma, busca refletir em quais aspectos da tarefa da atividade de design o conhecimento científico pode ser produzido. In the present study, livers, kidneys and adipose tissue of Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis) were collected. Samples were used to determine relationships between heavy metals/metalloids in liver and kidneys (Hg, Cd, Pb, Se and As) or persistent organic pollutants in adipose tissue (7 PCBs and 11 organochlorine pesticides) with biomarkers of oxidative stress (CAT, GPx, GR, GSH, GST, MDA) analysed in both internal organs. Three possible influencing variables have been studied: age, sex and sampling area. As a result, statistically significant differences (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) were only found according to the sampling area, with differences among the three studied areas found in both organs. Significant positive correlations (P < 0.01) were found in liver (Hg vs. GST; Se vs. MDA) and in kidney (As vs. GR; As vs. GPx; PCB52 vs. CAT; PCB138 vs. CAT). The scarcity in correlations suggests that the levels of pollutants found in animals were not high enough to trigger an effect at the oxidative level.
