In recent years, as a consequence of the re-evaluation of the role of non-Saccharomyces yeasts, several studies have been conducted on the use of controlled mixed fermentations with Saccharomyces and different non-Saccharomyces yeast species from the winemaking environment. To benefit from the metabolic particularities of some non-Saccharomyces yeasts, the management of a non-Saccharomyces strain in mixed fermentation is a crucial step, in particular the use of procedures addressed to increase the persistence of non-Saccharomyces strains during the fermentative process. The use of microencapsulation for cell immobilization might represent a strategy for enhancing the competitiveness of non-Saccharomyces yeasts during mixed fermentation. This study was aimed to assess the fermentative performance of a mixed starter culture, composed by a wild Hanseniaspora os-mophila strain (ND1) and a commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain (EC1118). For this purpose, free and microencapsulated cells of ND1 strain were tested in co-culture with EC1118 during mixed fermentations in order to evaluate the effect of the microencapsulation on fermentative behavior of mixed starter and final wine composition. The data have shown that H. osmophila cell formulation affects the persistence of both ND1 and EC1118 strains during fermentations and microencapsulation resulted in a suitable system to increase the fermentative efficiency of ND1 strain during mixed starter fermentation.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality is mainly caused by patient refractoriness to common anti-cancer therapies and consequent metastasis formation. Besides, the notorious toxic side effects of chemotherapy are a concurrent obstacle to be tackled. Thus, new treatment approaches are needed to effectively improve patient outcomes. Compelling evidence demonstrated that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are responsible for treatment failure and relapse. New natural treatment approaches showed capabilities to selectively target the CSC subpopulation by rendering them targetable by standard cytotoxic compounds. Herein we show the anti-cancer properties of the polymethoxyflavones and prenylflavonoids extracted from Citrus sinensis and Humulus lupulus, respectively. The natural biofunctional fractions, singularly and in combination, reduced the cell viability of CRC stem cells (CR-CSCs) and synergized with 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin (FOX) chemotherapy. These phenomena were accompanied by a reduced S and G2/M phase of the cell cycle and upregulation of cell death-related genes. Notably, both phytoextracts in combination with FOX thwarted stemness features in CR-CSCs as demonstrated by the impaired clonogenic potential and decreased Wnt pathway activation. Extracts lowered the expression of CD44v6 and affected the expansion of metastatic CR-CSCs in patients refractory to chemotherapy. Together, this study highlights the importance of polymethoxyflavones and prenylflavonoids as natural remedies to aid oncological therapies.

This anthology presents the winning short stories of the three sections of the Prize, as well as a further 13 short stories admitted to the final evaluation phase by the Scientific Committee of the Prize and evaluated by a Jury composed both of students of the French Language and Literature courses of the University of Naples "L'Orientale" and of professors of French Language and Literature of some Universities of Campania. Each of the 16 short stories is accompanied by an Italian translation. Mantrisi) elaborated upon during the conferences held in 2003 and 2009 on the occasion of the reopening of the catacombs, the proceedings of which have never been published. The texts, revised and integrated with additional information, illustrate in detail the methodologies that were followed, the research carried out, and the results obtained during the consolidation and restoration of the complex, carried out mainly in the early 2000s. Here, for the first time, among other things, new data on the so-called “Santa Rufina” catacombs make their scholarly debut, subject, in turn, on the same occasion, by extensive consolidation and restoration works. The section ends with an additional essay (by S. Mutino) in which an assessment is made of some of the conservation strategies adopted at the time. Through a focused and complex rereading of the existing documents, the volume analyzes the structure of the Barletta society with particular attention to its military and political élite and to the relationship with central power. Structured during the XII century consequently the intervention of the Norman crown, for the southern sovereigns the milites of Barletta organized and controlled the Ofanto Valley,  favoring the unification of the Apulian center with civitas and the bishopric of Canne. Strongly put to the test in the secular relationship with the crown, the élite of the Apulian city is here probed through the study of prosopographic profiles and the pervasiveness of the power used by main local military families. In this point of view, is analyzed both the relationship established from time to time with the ecclesiastical foundations of Outremer and with the Holy Land,  and the quality of the intervention in the main places of political and religious power and the characteristics of supremacy. In that sense, particular attention is focused on  the dynamics of the conflict, hidden in the city society, as a basic element for understanding the inner workings of power in the local and supralocal context. L’Autore riflette sulla pervasività del potere signorile, sul rapporto dell’élite locale con le fondazioni ecclesiastiche d’Oltremare e la Terrasanta, sulle peculiarità dell’intervento esercitato dai principali casati nei luoghi del potere politico e religioso e sulle caratteristiche della preminenza. This study tries to reconstruct the complex events of the economy in the Longobard period, specifically between the end of the seventh century and the Carolingian conquest, analyzing the question both in terms of production and market, attempting to highlight its structural convergences, in a broader political-social perspective.
