Two isomorphic compounds {[Ln2(H2O)10](Mo8O27)}·8H2O (Ln = Tm (1), Er (2)) were obtained by microwave irradiation, in which β-{Mo8O28} building units are linked via bridge oxygen and lanthanide ions coordinated with {MoO6} octahedra. The synthesis chemical processes have a short reaction time (15 min) with high yields (exceeding 85%). The solid-state photochromic properties of these two compounds were studied, and their color change process and the photochromic mechanism were analyzed. Furthermore, the solid-state photoluminescence properties of these two compounds were investigated and the stability of the luminescence was verified. Finally, variable temperature magnetic susceptibilities indicate that both compounds have anti-ferromagnetic interaction properties and 1/χM values are linear with temperature. Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) seriously affects the rehabilitation of nerve function and quality of life. However, the pathogenesis of PSD is still not clear. This study aimed to investigate the demographic, clinical, and biochemical factors in patients with PSD.Methods: Patients with an acute ischemic stroke, who met the inclusion criteria at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital from April 2016 to September 2016, were recruited for this study. The stroke severity was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and the mental state was assessed using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) at 1 week of admission. The patients were divided into PSD and non-PSD groups. The demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as the biochemical factors, were compared between the two groups. A logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors for depression following stroke.Results: A total of 83 patients with acute ischemic stroke were recruited. Of these, 36 (43.4%) developed depression. The multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that high NIHSS [odds ratio (OR): 1.84, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.09-3.12, P = 0.023] and high HAMD scores (OR: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.61-3.50, P < 0.001) were independent risk predictors for PSD and so were lower dopamine level (OR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.45-0.91, P = 0.014), lower 5-hydroxytryptamine level (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.98-1.00, P = 0.046), higher tumor necrosis factor-α level (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.00-1.09, P = 0.044), and lower nerve growth factor level (OR: 0.06, 95% CI: 0.01-0.67, P = 0.022).Conclusions: The identification of higher NIHSS scores, higher HAMD scores, lower dopamine level, lower 5-hydroxytryptamine level, higher tumor necrosis factor-α level, and lower nerve growth factor level might be useful for clinicians in recognizing and treating depression in patients after a stroke. Kernel size and kernel weight are important factors possibly involved in the determination of grain yield in maize, so identifying the genetic basis of kernel-related traits provides insights into the breeding of high-yield maize varieties. Kernel length (KL), kernel width (KW) and hundred kernel weight (HKW) were evaluated in three various planting conditions for the 240 field-grown double haploid (DH) lines derived from the single-cross hybrid Xianyu335. Variations in KL, KW and HKW were observed among DH lines, and all three traits showed a broad sense heritability of 76%. A total of 964 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the MaizeSNP3072 chip was utilised to create a high-density genetic map of 1546.4 cM and to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Using composite interval mapping, a total of five, seven and five QTLs have been mapped for KL, KW and HKW, respectively. qkl1-2 and qkl4-1 explained 17.8% and 14.2% of the phenotypic variation in KL, respectively, and the other three QTLs contributed 3.2-4.0%. The phenotypic variation explained (PVE) of seven QTLs responsible for KW ranged from 3.3 to 9.5%. Three QTLs for HKW, qhkw1, qhkw5 and qhkw10 each explained more than 10% of the phenotypic variation, and qhkw4 and qhkw9 accounted for 3.0% and 6.0%, respectively. In higher plants, many mitochondrial genes contain group II-type introns that are removed from RNAs by splicing to produce mature transcripts that are then translated into functional proteins. However, the factors involved in the splicing of mitochondrial introns and their biological functions are not well understood in maize. Here, we isolated an empty pericarp 10 ( emp10) mutant and identified the underlying gene by map-based cloning. Emp10 encodes a P-type mitochondria-targeted pentatricopeptide repeat ( PPR) protein with 10 PPR motifs. Loss of Emp10 function results in splicing defect of the first intron of nad2, a gene encoding subunit 2 of NADH dehydrogenase (also called complex I). The emp10 mutant has undetectable activity of complex I and has arrested development of embryo and endosperm, and thus defective seeds with empty pericarp. Additionally, the basal endosperm transfer layer cells were severely affected, indicating the deficiency of cell wall ingrowths in the emp10 kernels. Moreover, the alternative respiratory pathway involving alternative oxidase was significantly induced in the emp10 mutant. These results suggest that EMP10 is specifically required for the cis-splicing of mitochondrial nad2 intron 1, embryogenesis and endosperm development in maize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mobile Opportunistic Networks (MONs) are effective solutions to uphold communications in the situations where traditional communication networks are unavailable. In MONs, messages can be disseminated among mobile nodes in an epidemic and delay-tolerant manner. However, MONs can be abused to disseminate misinformation causing undesirable effects in the general public, such as panic and misunderstanding. To deal with this issue, we first propose a formal model to formulate the process of misinformation propagation in MONs, considering human psychological behaviors. Secondly, we explore a general framework to describe the random node mobility, and derive a new contact rate between nodes, which is closely related to mobility properties of nodes. Thirdly, we propose a novel approach based on vaccination and treatment strategies for inhibiting misinformation propagation in human MONs. Moreover, a novel pulse control model of misinformation propagation is developed. Finally, through the derivation and stability analysis of a misinformation-free period solution of the proposed model, we obtain a threshold upon which misinformation dies out in a human MON. In maize, high grain moisture ( GM) at harvest causes problems in harvesting, threshing, artificial drying, storage, transportation and processing. Understanding the genetic basis of GM will be useful for breeding low- GM varieties. A quantitative genetics approach was used to identify quantitative trait loci ( QTL) related to GM at harvest in field-grown maize. The GM of a double haploid population consisting of 240 lines derived from Xianyu335 was evaluated in three planting seasons and a high-density genetic linkage map covering 1546.4 cM was constructed. The broad-sense heritability of GM at harvest was 71.0%. Using composite interval mapping, six QTL for GM at harvest were identified on five chromosomes (Chr). Two QTL located on Chr1, qgm1-1 and qgm1-2, explained 5.0% and 10.8% of the phenotypic variation in GM at harvest, respectively. The QTL qgm2, qgm3, qgm4 and qgm5 accounted for 3.3%, 8.3%, 5.4% and 11.0% of the mean phenotypic variation, respectively. Because of their consistent detection over multiple planting seasons, the detected QTL appear to be robust and reliable for the breeding of low- GM varieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aimed to explore the biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods: The microarray data of GSE16759 were from the expression profile samples of 4 parietal lobe tissues from patients with AD and 4 ones from age-matched control participants. The differentially expressed micro RNAs (miRNAs) and genes (DEGs) underwent hierarchical clustering and function analysis followed by target genes prediction. Finally, DEGs were mapped to the target genes to construct miRNA-regulated networks. Results: A total of 427 DEGs were obtained and clustered into 5 functions. After DEGs were mapped to the predicted target genes, 313 regulatory pairs were established. The target genes SEC22 vesicle trafficking protein homolog B (SEC22B) and SEC63 homolog (SEC63) regulated by miRNA-206, RAB10, member RAS oncogene family (RAB10) regulated by miRNA-655, and fms-related tyrosine kinase 1 (FLT1) regulated by miRNA-30e-3p and miRNA-369-3p were involved in the biological processes of protein transport and regulation of cell motion. This study aimed to examine whether the neuroprotective effects of Mdivi-1 are attributable to extracellular ATP and adenosine. Mdivi-1 was administered prior to or post middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The extracellular adenosine was measured by in vivo microdialysis and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) in MCAO mouse model. Western blot was done to determine the influence of Mdivi-1 on the expression of CD39 and CREB phosphorylation both in vivo and in the cultured astrocytes. Intracellular cAMP and protein kinase A (PKA) activity were detected in primary astrocytes. Results showed that Mdivi-1 significantly reduced infarct volume and neurological scores when administered either prior to or post MCAO. Interestingly, pretreatment with Mdivi-1 resulted in marked increase of extracellular adenosine and concomitant decrease in ATP. The expression of CD39, but not CD73, was upregulated by Mdivi-1, which was associated with the elevated phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), a transcription factor potentially regulating CD39 expression. In primary astrocytes, Mdivi-1 treatment induced increases in intracellular cAMP, PKA activity and CREB phosphorylation, and PKA-specific inhibitor completely reversed Mdivi-1-induced CD39 expression. Our results demonstrate that Mdivi-1 protects against ischemic brain injury through increasing extracellular adenosine, a process involving elevated CD39 expression that is likely modulated by cAMP/PKA/CREB cascade. Soil salinization is a worldwide problem that limits agricultural production. It is important to understand the salt stress tolerance ability of maize seedlings and explore the underlying related genetic resources. In this study, we used a high-throughput phenotyping platform with a 3D laser sensor (Planteye F500) to identify the digital biomass, plant height and normalized vegetation index under normal and saline conditions at multiple time points. The result revealed that a three-leaf period (T3) was identified as the key period for the phenotypic variation in maize seedlings under salt stress. Moreover, we mapped the salt-stress-related SNPs and identified candidate genes in the natural population via a genome-wide association study. A total of 44 candidate genes were annotated, including 26 candidate genes under normal conditions and 18 candidate genes under salt-stressed conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a high-throughput phenotyping platform to accurately, continuously quantify morphological traits of maize seedlings in different growing environments. And the phenotype and genetic information of this study provided a theoretical basis for the breeding of salt-resistant maize varieties and the study of salt-resistant genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
