Abstract

To understand the processes that build up galaxies we investigate the stellar structure and gas kinematics of spiral and irregular galaxies out to redshift 1. We target 92 galaxies in four cluster (z = 0.3 & 0.5) fields to study the environmental influence. Their stellar masses derived from multiband VLT/FORS photometry are distributed around but mostly below the characteristic Schechter-fit mass. From HST/ACS images we determine morphologies and structural parameters like disk length, position angle and ellipticity. Combining the spectra of three slit positions per galaxy using the MXU mode of VLT/FORS2 we construct the two-dimensional velocity field from gas emission lines for 16 cluster members and 33 field galaxies. The kinematic position angle and flatness are derived by a Fourier expansion of elliptical velocity profiles. To trace possible interaction processes, we define three irregularity indicators based on an identical analysis of local galaxies from the SINGS project. Our distant sample displays a higher fraction of disturbed velocity fields with varying percentages (10%, 30% and 70%) because they trace different features. While we find far fewer candidates for major mergers than the SINS sample at z~2, our data are sensitive enough to trace less violent processes. Most irregular signatures are related to star formation events and less massive disks are affected more than Milky-Way type objects. We detect similarly high fractions of irregular objects both for the distant field and cluster galaxies with similar distributions. We conclude that we may witness the building-up of disk galaxies still at redshifts z~0.5 via minor mergers and gas accretion, while some cluster members may additionally experience stripping, evaporation or harassment interactions., 4 pages, 2 colour figures, to appear in the ASP Conference Series Proceedings of "Galaxies in Isolation: Exloring Nature vs. Nurture", Granada, 2009

Es nuestro objetivo comunicar un caso clínico del Hospital Clínico Herminda Martin, en el cual se realizó una reparación torácica con material protésico en un tiempo como consecuencia de un traumatismo penetrante torácico por arma de fuego con pérdida de pared, con buenos resultados We report a 21 years old woman that was admitted in the emergency room due to a extensive chest trauma caused by a gunshot. The patient was subjected to an emergency thoracotomy. A right lung lower and middle lobectomy, partial hepatectomy, diaphragmatic suture and mastectomy were performed. A primary chest closure was done, using a Marlex prosthesis covered by a cutaneous flap. During the postoperative period, the patient had a surgical wound infection, that was treated conservatively and was discharged 42 days after surgery

Abstract

This article discusses the contents of the Document sources of the Information Service on Disability (DIS) which focuses on dissertations and journal articles as these are considered to be of greater interest on account of their depth of analysis and research and their currency. A series of products are elaborated as information search aids: dossiers of documents grouped according to subject from different journals which offer the contents of the most relevant Spanish scientific journals on disabilities; a quarterly contents page bulletin giving the indexes of the most relevant national and international scientific journals. Thematic grouping of dossiers is carried out according to user demand and reports on issues suggested by users are also prepared periodically. En este artículo mostramos el contenido de una de las secciones que conforman el Servicio de Información sobre Discapacidad (SID), la de Fuentes Documentales, centrándonos en las tesis y artículos de revistas por considerarlas de mayor interés por su profundidad de análisis, investigación y actualidad. Como ayuda en la búsqueda de información se realizan una serie de productos, como son dossieres documentales, que van a agrupar la información temáticamente, vaciados de diferentes revistas, que nos ofrecen el contenido de las revistas científicas españolas.

Abstract

En este artículo se estima el impacto provocado por la inmigración en el crecimiento del Producto Interior Bruto per cápita (PIBpc) en cada uno de los países de la Unión Europea de los 15 (UE-15) durante el período 1995-2013, lo que nos permitirá comparar una fase de crecimiento económico (1995-2008) y otra de crisis (2008-2013). En concreto, se descompone el PIBpc en tres componentes asociadas a la productividad del trabajo, la tasa de empleo y la proporción de personas en edad de trabajar en el conjunto de la población. Posteriormente, con el objetivo de estimar la contribución de la inmigración al crecimiento del PIBpc, se realiza una desagregación para nativos y extranjeros. Ahora bien, las funciones utilizadas en la correspondiente desagregación pueden alterar los resultados relativos a la productividad del trabajo, por lo que hay que ser cautos en el momento de escoger las unidades de medida del PIB. || This paper describes the impact caused by immigration on the estimated growth of gross domestic product per capita (GDPpc) in each of the countries of the 15 members of the European Union (EU-15) during the period 1995 to 2013. Specifically, GDPpc breaks down into three factors: labour productivity, employment rate and proportion of people of working age in the general population. To approximate the contribution of immigration to GDPpc growth, a disaggregated estimate for natives and foreigners is done. However, functions used in the relevant disaggregation can affect the findings regarding labour productivity, consequently care must be taken when measurement units of GDP are chosen.

Abstract

En 1990 se colocaron 7 trampas horizontales de baldosa verde del tipo utilizado por IRWIN (1980), situadas a la misma altura que el cultivo, en diferentes zonas productoras de pimiento en España: Aranjuez (Madrid), Balboa (Badajoz), Cadreita (Navarra), Mendavia (La Rioja), Torrepacheco (Murcia) y Montañana (Zaragoza). El muestreo abarcó de 18 a 19 semanas en cada localidad. El total de pulgones recolectados durante el período que duró el muestreo fue de 3.186 que corresponden a 29 especies distintas, de los que 1.019 individuos corresponden a la especie Aphis fabae Scopoli (31,98 % del total) y 500 a Aphis gossypii Glover (15,69 %). Otras especies capturadas en menor proporción han sido: Aphis craccivora Koch, Aphis nasturtii Kaltenbach, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) y Brachycaudus spp., entre otras. Se realizaron ensayos de transmisión en laboratorio con el virus Y de la patata (PVY) utilizando las especies más importantes desde el punto de vista del número de capturas realizadas. Se emplearon dos aislados de este virus: uno de ellos obtenido en campo infectando pimiento y que pertenece al patotipo 0 (infecta a «Yolo Wonder» pero no a «Yolo Y») y otro obtenido de patata y perteneciente al grupo N de PVY (patata). Los resultados indican que ambas cepas son transmisibles por Myzus persicae (Sulzer) a pimiento «Yolo Wonder», aunque PVYN se transmite con mucha menor eficiencia. En ensayos de comparación entre distintas especies de vectores en cuanto a la capacidad de transmisión de PVY*, se observa que M. persicae es el más eficaz, seguido de A. gossypii que es el segundo en importancia. Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris fue también capaz de transmitir PVY0, pero con mucha menor eficacia. A la vista de los resultados obtenidos, y a pesar de su gran eficacia de transmisión en condiciones controladas, M. persicae parece tener escasa importancia en cuanto a su capacidad de transmisión de PVY en campo, ya que presenta una baja actividad de vuelo en cultivo de pimiento en todas las localidades muestreadas. Seven horizontal green tile traps similar to the ones described by IRWIN (1980), were maintained at a height equal to the top of the pepper canopy, and placed at several pepper growing areas of Spain: Aranjuez (Madrid, Balboa (Badajoz), Cadreita (Navarra), Mendavia (La Rioja), Torrepacheco (Murcia) and Montañana (Zaragoza). Sampling lasted from 18 to 19 weeks, in each locality. Over that time 3,186 aphids, belonging to 29 different species, were captured. Aphis fabae Scopoli was the principal species captured 1,019 individuals (31,98 % of the total), followed by Aphis gossypii Glover (500 individuals; 15,69 % of total). Other species captured in fewer numbers were: Aphis craccivora Koch, Aphis nasturtii Kaltenbach, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) and Brachycaudus spp. Transmission studies were performed in the laboratory, using potato virus Y (PVY) infected pepper plants. The aphid species used in these studies were the main ones captured in the horizontal green tile traps. Two PVY-isolates were used: pepper-PVY strain (PVY"), that infects Yolo-Y but not Yolo-W, and potato-PVY strain (PVYN). Results showed that both strains are transmissible by Myzus persicae Sulzer, to pepper (var. «Yolo-Wonder»), though PVYN is transmitted with much less efficiency. Transmission tests between different species of aphids using PVY0 infected pepper plants, indicated that M. persicae is the most efficient one, followed by A. gossypii which is the second most important. Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was also capable to transmit PVY0, but with much less efficiency. According to our results, in spite of its great efficiency to transmit PVY in laboratory conditions, M. persicae seems to have a limited importance as a PVY vector under field conditions, because its flight activity is very low in all the pepper-fields sampled.

Abstract

Background The operationalisation of quality of life for people with more severe disabilities has been acknowledged in the published research for more than two decades. This study aims to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the quality of life of adults with severe disabilities by developing a set of quality of life indicators appropriate to this population using a Delphi method and the eight-domain conceptual model proposed by Schalock & Verdugo (). Method The participating panel in the Delphi method included 12 experts who evaluated each proposed item according to four criteria: suitability, importance, observability and sensitivity. Descriptive analyses were used to select the best items in each of the four rounds of this Delphi study, as well as examining the coefficients of concordance that were calculated for the final pool of items. Results The four rounds of the Delphi study resulted in a final pool of 118 items (91 that were considered valid in the first round plus 27 items proposed, reformulated or discussed in the following rounds). Importance and sensitivity were the criteria that received the highest and lowest ratings, respectively, but also the ones that had the highest and lowest mean coefficients of concordance. Experts showed the strongest agreement for items related to material well-being, while the weakest was found for items related to personal development. Conclusions This study further contributes to our understanding of how to operationalise and measure quality of life in adults with severe disabilities. The item pool generated may prove helpful in the development of instruments for the measurement of quality of life-related outcomes in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
