A retrospective review of the clinical and angiographic features of 116 patients who had one or more transient ischaemic attacks in the carotid territory showed that stenosis of the cervical portion of the internal carotid artery was significantly more prevalent among patients whose attacks had been brief, with full recovery in under one hour. This information may be helpful in selecting patients for angiography.
Transient cerebral ischaemic attacks in the territory of the internal carotid artery are generally believed to be due to thromboembolia.[1 2] Angiography discloses evidence of local disease at the origin of the internal carotid artery, a possible source of emboli, in 40-50% of cases.[3 4] Since angiography carries a small risk of complications and is not always readily available the recognition of features that are likely to be associated with operable lesions in the carotid artery is clearly important. A carotid source of embolic material is suggested both by the joint occurrence of attacks of amaurosis fugax and symptoms related to hemisphere ischaemia and by the presence of a bruit.[3] We investigated a possible relation between the duration of the transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and the presence of a carotid lesion. ISO Standard 8529–1:2001 on Reference neutron radiations is under revision. The spectral data for the D 2 O-moderated 252Cf field in the 2001 version of the standard refer to calculations performed in the early 80s. There are changes in the revised standard, and these arise from updated calculations, described in this paper, based on a new 252Cf spectrum (from ENDF/B-VIII.0) and the MCNP6.2 transport code with ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross sections. In addition, the impact of different possible construction details of the D 2 O-moderated 252Cf assembly is provided. Abstract A calibration of the JET neutron detectors was carried out prior to the upcoming deuterium-tritium experimental campaign. Two Compact DT neutron generators (NGs) were purchased for this purpose from VNIIA, Russia. These generators are capable of producing approximately 2 × 108 neutrons/s with a DT fusion energy spectrum. Preceding the in-vessel calibration measurements, these compact generators were tested and fully characterised at the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL). In order to support the characterisation measurements, detailed neutronics models were developed of the NGs, monitoring detectors and remote handling (RH) apparatus. Neutron spectra calculated from these models have been used to help determine NPL long counter efficiencies and effective centres, as well as NPL reference iron and aluminium activation foil reaction rates. The neutron emission rate has been measured for both generators as a function of angle using absolutely calibrated long counters and the relative emission rate by monitoring single crystal diamond detectors. The measured anisotropy profile is shown to be reproducible with a detailed NG MCNP model. Consequently, the neutron source routine and the MCNP model of the NGs can be reliably used for the analysis of the in-vessel calibration at JET. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Bonner Sphere spectrometer employing a large, 11 mm diameter × 3 mm thickness, 6 LiI(Eu) scintillator (LL-BSS), was assembled. The purpose was to produce a BSS similar in sensitivity to those based on 3 He sensors, but using alternative sensors. With respect to the traditional BSS based on the 4 mm (diameter) × 4 mm (height) 6 LiI(Eu), this new BSS is a factor of 3 more sensitive. LL-BSS response matrix, determined with MCNPX, was experimentally evaluated with monoenergetic reference neutron fields of 144 keV, 565 keV and 1.2 MeV available at NPL (Teddington, UK). The results of the experiment confirmed the correctness of the response matrix within an overall uncertainty lower than ±2%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research has demonstrated how an ultra-thin rechargeable battery technology has been fabricated using screen printing technology. The screen printing process enabled the sequential deposition of current collector, electrode and separator/electrolyte materials onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate in order to form both flexible and rechargeable electrodes for a battery application. The anode and cathode fabricated were based on the conducting poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophen): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) which were combined to form the electrodes. The difference in the oxidation level between the two electrodes produced an open circuit voltage of 0.60 V and displayed a practical specific capacity of 5.5 mAh g −1 . The battery developed had an active surface area of 400 mm 2 and a device thickness of 440 μm. The chemistry developed during this study displayed long-term cycling potential and proves the stability of the cells for continued usage. Americium–beryllium neutron sources are certainly the most widely used in neutron dosimetry laboratories, basically due to their long half-life and their energy distribution, which covers the energy domain of interest for many applications in ambient and personal dosimetry. Nevertheless, the spectrum of this source depends on the materials and dimension of the capsule and on the amount and physical–chemical properties of the active material, thus affecting relevant quantities such as the spectrum-averaged fluence-to-dose equivalent conversion coefficient. A EURAMET (European Association of National Metrology Institutes) project (n. 1104) was initiated to experimentally investigate how the neutron spectrum changes for different source sizes and encapsulations with a view to providing improved data for a planned revision of the ISO 8529 Standard Series. The experimental campaign was carried out in the low scatter facility at NPL. Here three different Bonner sphere spectrometers, BSSs, were exposed to the neutron fields produced by three different neutron sources formats: one X3 capsule (1 Ci) and two X14 capsules (10 Ci and 15 Ci). The specific advantage of the BSS is the large sensitivity to low-energy neutrons ( E <0.1 MeV) which is the component expected to be most affected by the capsule-to-capsule variations and the component which is least well known. This paper summarises the results of the campaign with emphasis on (1) estimating the low-energy component of the Am–Be neutron spectrum, according to the encapsulation type; (2) evaluating the coherence between the Bonner spheres data and the previous studies performed with high-resolution spectrometers but limited in energy to E >0.1 MeV; (3) understanding whether the ISO-recommended Am–Be spectrum needs to be amended, and for which source formats.
