Abstract

From the analysis of a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.63 pb-1 taken during the 1990 run of LEP at centre of mass energies between 88.2 GeV an 94.2 GeV, the tau decays {Mathematical expression} and their charge conjugates have been studied. The following branching ratios have been measured; {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression}, Br(τ- → π- (K-)vτ)=11.9±0.7±0.7%, BR (τ- → ρ- vτ)= 22.4±0.8±1.3%, in good agreement with world averages. The measured electronic and muonic branching ratios lead to a measurement of the strong coupling constant, αs (mτ) = 0.26-0.12+0.09. Extrapolating the αs value from mτ to mZ yields αs (mZ) = 0.109-0.028+0.012. The average polarization Pτ of taus produced in Z → τs τs decays has also been measured using the above decay modes. The weighted mean of the polarizations obtained from the four decay modes is Pτ=-0.24±0.07. This value of Pτ gives, in the improved Born approximation, a ratio between the axial and vector coupling constants of the tau of υτ/aτ = 0.12 ± 0.04, and hence a value of the effective electroweak mixing parameter sin2 θW(mZ2). © 1992 Springer-Verlag.

Corrosion under insulation is a significant cause of pipeline failure in the oil and gas industry. This paper describes the initial developmental stages of a technique which uses the structure of an insulated pipeline as a coaxial waveguide to support the propagation of microwaves. Abstract

Ultrasonic imaging of defects in elastic media is complicated by the generation and detection of shear waves. We investigate whether these affect imaging using two imaging algorithms and whether time-domain gating can be used to improve the results. It was found that the additional presence of the shear waves does not degrade the resulting image compared to the gated version when using the Factorisation Method, which also allows imaging at super-resolution (sub-12λ) scales. Abstract

Synthetically focused imaging has been used for some time in the NDE community. The techniques have primarily been directed towards imaging using bulk waves. There has recently been use of SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) using guided waves in plates. Here, we review three different synthetically focused imaging algorithms for a linear array aperture: CSM (Common Source Method), SAFT and TFM (Total Focusing Method). The resolution of the different techniques is obtained from scalar diffraction theory and then validated by means of a low frequency (50kHz) steel plate experiment using PZT excitation and laser reception of the A0 mode. Branched or multiple defects are encountered in many industrial applications, but sizing is often difficult because of their complex geometry. Potential Drop (PD) Spectroscopy seems to be a promising solution, as it combines measurements at different frequencies to define the envelope of a defect, which allows the maximum depth to be determined. Abstract

The possibility of using ultrasonic guided waves for detecting and perhaps characterizing, the sludge or blockage inside pipes is investigated. The presence of a an internal layer in contact with the pipe wall modifies the characteristics of the guided modes which can propagate in the clean pipe. By measuring these changes one can try to infer the physical and geometrical properties of the layer. Abstract

In most current imaging techniques image resolution is limited by the wavelength, λ, of the interrogating signal. In this paper a technique which can overcome this limit is presented and thus it is classified as being a super resolution technique. The method has the potential for dramatically improved imaging and subwavelength resolution.
