The analyzed sample was composed of 978 children of both sexes (518 boys and 460 girls), aged 7 to 11 years. BMI and skinfolds were measured, and three motor tests were applied (flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, and muscular strength/endurance). In both sexes, overweight/obese children presented poor performance in all motor tests, except flexibility. In general, overweight/obese children have an increased odds ratio (OR) to present poor physical performance (boys: OR = 3.64 for cardiorespiratory fitness, OR = 1.94 for muscular strength/endurance, OR = 1.52 for flexibility; girls: OR = 5.03 for cardiorespiratory fitness and OR = 2.62 for muscular strength/endurance). In conclusion, for both sexes, a poor physical performance in the tests measuring cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength/ endurance was associated with the presence of overweight/obesity. Purpose To describe the effects of physical exercise/activity on the vascular architecture of children and adolescents, as well as to identify the effects of inflammation and sedentary behaviors on this relationship. Methods Potentially relevant articles were identified in the databases MEDLINE and PubMed covering the period from 2000 to 2015. No language restrictions were applied. Results Thirteen articles were found that included obese boys and girls in their samples (aged 9–19). Six interventional studies assessed inflammation and in five of these, physical exercise decreased inflammation. In 10 studies, vascular architecture was affected by physical exercise/activity. Conclusions The impact of physical exercise on vascular architecture and inflammation seems relevant, but has been mainly investigated in obese groups. Practical Implications Health professionals should act together in organized interventions in schools, targeting the promotion of higher physical activity levels in children and adolescents.

AIM It is unclear whether parents' weight affects their ability to recognise whether their teenage children are overweight. This study analysed whether overweight parents assessed their child's weight as well as normal weight parents. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out in Londrina, Brazil, in 2011 and included teenagers between 14 and 17 years of age and their parents or guardians. We recorded the weight and height of the teenagers and asked the parents or guardians to fill in a questionnaire that included how they perceived their child's weight and demographic information. RESULTS We studied 1231 teenagers - 58.2% girls - and 19.4% were overweight or obese. In 842 (68.4%) of cases both parents replied to the questionnaire. We found that 8.7% of the 1202 mothers and 10.0% of the 871 fathers underestimated how overweight their child was. The adjusted analyses confirmed they were twice as likely to underestimate their child's weight if they were overweight themselves, with an odds ratio of 1.96 for the mothers and 2.04 for the fathers. Sociodemographic characteristics did not affect the results. CONCLUSION Overweight parents were twice as likely to underestimate the weight of their teenage children, regardless of the sociodemographic characteristics.

Study Design: Cross-sectional. Objective of the study: To investigate the relationship between cardiovascular disease and hospitalizations among users of the Brazilian Public Healthcare System of Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil. Methods: The sample was composed by patients from two Basic Healthcare Units of Presidente Prudente / SP. Hospitalizations, presence of disease, habitual physical activity, body mass index and blood pressure measures were the variables analyzed. Spearman correlation indicated relationship between variables and statistical significance was set at p-value < 5%. Results: 514 adults of both sexes were interviewed. The occurrence of hospitalization in the previous year was 14.9%. There was relationship between habitual physical activity, diagnosis of hypertension, arrhythmia and stroke with number of days hospitalized. After adjustment for confounders, patients with two and three/four diagnostic for cardiovascular diseases were more frequent hospitalized compared to patients without diagnoses. Conclusion: It was found relationship between hospitalizations and diagnosis of hypertension, arrhythmia, stroke and lower levels of habitual physical activity among patients users of the public healthcare system in Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil

Metabolic alterations and cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, are associated with lifestyle modifications, particularly the increase of physical inactivity and poor eating habits, which contribute to one of the main causes of death in modern times. Cardiovascular diseases are positively correlated with several illnesses, such as obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia, and these disorders are known to contribute to changes in immune cells, cytokines and metabolism. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of lipid plaques and fibrous tissue (atheroma) in the artery walls and this process is related to the oxidation of LDL-c (low density lipoprotein) and the formation of a particle, termed LDLox, which can generate toxic injury to the vessel wall. In this atherogenic process there is an inflammatory response generated by the injury in the vascular endothelium, which in itself is able to express and secrete a variety of molecules, such as myeloid colony-stimulating factors (M-CSF), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), that act as activators of the immune system. Therefore, the main purpose of this review is to highlight the immuno-metabolic alterations involving the thickening and stiffness of arteries observed in atherosclerosis, and how chronic exercise can act as an anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic approach.

Objective Our aim was to determine the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and metabolic risk in adolescents from Southern Brazil. Methods We performed a school-based cross-sectional study in 1,037 adolescents (436 boys) aged 10–16 years from Londrina, PR, Brazil. CRF was determined by 20-m shuttle run test. A continuous metabolic risk score was obtained from the mean of fasting glucose, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, blood pressure, and waist circumference z-scores. Age, physical activity (Baecke questionnaire), body mass index (BMI; weight/stature2), and somatic maturity (Mirwald method) were included as covariates in multiple linear regression analyses. The objective of this study was to assess, in a sample composed by postmenopausal women, the agreement between physical activity time reported by short version of the IPAQ and measured by accelerometer in different intensities. The participants consisted of postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years (N = 60, mean age 61.5±7.5 years). They completed the IPAQ (short version) and then wore an accelerometer for one week. Statistical analysis was composed by the Kappa index, McNemar’s test, specificity and sensitivity, Spearman’s rank correlation and the Wilcoxon test. The amount of time spent in moderate and vigorous physical activity had weak correlation (r=-0.04-0.28) between accelerometer and IPAQ. IPAQ overestimated the minutes spent in moderate and vigorous intensities and underestimated the time spent in light activities. There was not significant agreement between instruments (kappa index= 0.151±0.111; p= 0.185; sensibility, 46% and specificity, 28%). To investigate the association of parental and adolescents' screen time with self-rated health and to examine the mediating effects of psychosocial factors (social relationships and distress) on this association. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 984 Brazilian adolescents (10- to 17-year-olds). Self-rated health, screen time (adolescents and parental), and perception of social relationships and distress were evaluated through self-report questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was adopted to investigate the pathways of the relationship between adolescents' screen time and self-rated health. Results. Adolescents' screen time was directly and negatively related to self-rated health only in boys (r = -0.158, p = .015). In girls, screen time was related to self-rated health through distress (r = -0.188, p = .007) and social relationships (r = 0.176, p = .008). The models fit was adequate ((2)/df 3.0, root mean square error of approximation 0.90, and Tucker-Lewis Index >0.90). Conclusions. Higher screen time was associated with poor self-rated health in boys, while in girls, psychosocial factors mediated the adverse relationships between screen time and self-rated health. Study design: This is a cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was conducted in the city of Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil (n = 970). Television (TV) viewing and physical activity (PA) were assessed by questionnaire. MetS was assessed via medical records. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used in data analyses. Results: Participants with moderate TV viewing were associated with MetS when compared with low TV viewing group, even after adjustments for age, sex, economic status, smoking, and PA (odds ratio [OR] = 1.49 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.01–2.20]). The fully adjusted model showed an association between high exposure to TV viewing with MetS (OR = 1.77 [95%CI: 1.11–2.82]). The combination of physical inactivity and high TV viewing boosted the likelihood of having MetS (OR = 1.89 [95%CI: 1.08–3.29]). Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that moderate and high TV viewing time is associated with the presence of MetS, mainly in insufficiently active adults and those living in lower economic condition. Quatro artigos incluíram 7104 adolescentes com idades entre 10 e 18 anos, residentes em quatro cidades diferentes localizadas no Sudeste (n = 1) e Sul (n = 3) do Brasil, foram realizadas coletas de dados entre 2004 e 2012. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of sports participation in Brazilian children and adolescents using a systematic review approach. This review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and the protocol was previously registered on PROSPERO (95441), the searches were performed in the following electronic databases: PubMed, ScIELO, Bireme, and EMBASE. The search strategy included a combination of keywords: Children and adolescents, prevalence and sports participation. Four papers included 7104 adolescents aged from 10 to 18 years old, living in four different cities located at Southeast (n= 1) and South (n= 3) of Brazil data collections were carried out between 2004 and 2012. Most of the studies had cross-sectional design and the findings of all surveys were published in international journals. The definition of “sports participation” was not the same in all papers. The overall prevalence of sports participation among adolescents was 58.1%, higher among boys (65.9%) than in girls (51.5%). The systematic review identified that the prevalence of sports participation among Brazilian adolescents is low and significantly affected by gender. Sports practice during childhood can influence health indicators in later ages through direct and indirect pathways. Thus, this study aimed to test direct and indirect pathways to the association between sports practice in childhood and metabolic risk in adolescence, adopting physical activity, adiposity, and cardiorespiratory fitness at adolescence as potential mediators. This cross-sectional study with retrospective information was conducted with 991 adolescents (579 girls, 412 boys) aged 10 to 16 y. Sports activity was self-reported in childhood (retrospective data) and physical activity evaluated in adolescence through questionnaires. Somatic maturation (Mirwald method), cardiorespiratory fitness (20-m shuttle-run test), body fat (skinfolds), waist circumference, blood pressure (automatic instrument) and blood variables (fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides) were measured at adolescence. Waist circumference, blood pressure and blood variables composed the metabolic risk score. Structured equation modeling was adopted. In both sexes, the relationship between sports practice at childhood and metabolic risk was fully mediated by habitual physical activity, which is related to the obesity construct and cardiorespiratory fitness. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between different domains of SB with diabetes among adult users of the Brazilian National Health System (NHS). Methods Cross-sectional study from the primary care system of the Brazilian NHS in the city of Bauru, Brazil. SB, physical activity (PA), DM and other chronic diseases were assessed by face-to-face interviews and medical records. As potential confounders in the adjusted model, we used gender, age, economic status, smoking status, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and PA. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in public schools. METEIODS:This was a cross-sectional study on 1,209 adolescents aged between 10 and 17 years. CRF was estimated from the 20-meter shuttle run test. Anthropometric data on body mass index and waist circumference were obtained Somatic maturation was assessed from the peak height velocity. Questionnaires were used to evaluate socioeconomic variables (family income, parents'education level and number of siblings) and behavioral variables (physical activity, screen time and alcohol and tobacco consumption) among the parents and adolescents. RESULTS: Boys, adolescents with normal weight and on-time maturers presented greater CRF (P < 0.05). Concerning socioeconomic correlates, girls (tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and screen time), adolescents with normal weight (alcohol consumption, physical activity and screen time), and on-time maturers (alcohol consumption, physical activity during childhood and habitual physical activity) demonstrated higher numbers of behavioral correlates with CRF Normal-weight adolescents presented a higher number of biological correlates (chronological age, age at peak height velocity and waist circumference). CONCLUSIONS: Different correlates were observed according to sex, nutritional status and somatic maturation status. However, habitual physical activity, waist circumference and chronological age seemed to be the strongest factors associated with cardiorespiratory fitness among adolescents. OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to examine the stability of physical fitness, and the interrelationships among intra-individual changes in fitness and fatness among elementary school children. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted among 372 adolescents (196 boys) and followed up over 3 years (from childhood to adolescence). Physical fitness was estimated using three indicators: cardiorespiratory fitness (through a 9-minute running test), flexibility (through a sit-and-reach test), and muscle resistance (through maximal abdominals in 1 minute). Given the importance of physical activity for health promotion and for the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, the Unified Health System (SUS) has changed its strategy of action in the last decades, trying to adopt preventive activities, seeking better quality of life of the Brazilian population and reduce costs with treatment of diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns in users of the Brazilian National Unified Health System during 18 months and the impact of sex and time on such variables. One hundred and ninety-eight participants (58 men and 140 women) were evaluated. Physical activity level was assessed using the Baecke questionnaire. Men had higher scores in all physical activity variables compared to women: walking (p-value= 0.013), cycling (p-value= 0.001) and commuting (p-value= 0.007), but not for TV watching (p-value= 0.362). After 18 months, in the overall sample, walking score increased 25.9% (95%CI= 10.6 to 41.1), but not cycling (1.5% [95%CI= -2.7 to 5.7]), commuting (14.4% [95%CI= -0.4 to 29.3]) and TV watching (1.6% [95%CI= -5.7 to 9.1]). Men were usually more active than women in active behaviors, but not in TV watching. However, differences over time were similar between sexes. Resumo Dada a importância da atividade física para promoção da saúde, assim como para a prevenção de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) mudou a estratégia de atuação nas últimas décadas, procurando adotar atividades preventivas, buscando melhorar a qualidade de vida da população brasileira e diminuir gastos com tratamento de doenças. Objetivou-se investigar as mudanças na prática de atividade física e tempo de televisão em usuários do SUS durante um período de 18 meses e o impacto do sexo e tempo nessas variáveis. Foram avaliados 198 participantes (58 homens e 140 mulheres). Nível de atividade física foi mensurado através do questionário de Baecke. Homens apresentaram maiores escores em todas as variáveis de atividade física: caminhada (p-valor 0,013), ciclismo (p-valor 0,001) e locomoção (p-valor 0,007) do que mulheres, mas não para assistir televisão (p-valor= 0,362). Após 18 meses, em toda a amostra, o escore de caminhada aumentou 25,9% (IC95%= 10,6 - 41,1), mas não ciclismo (1,5% [95%CI= -2,7 – 5,7]), locomoção (14,4% [95%CI= -0,4 – 29,3]) e televisão (1,6% [95%CI= -5,7 – 9,1]). Entre usuários do SUS, homens foram usualmente mais ativos que mulheres em comportamentos ativos, mas não ao assistir televisão. Porém, diferenças ao longo do tempo foram similares entre os sexos.

Background Osteoporosis is considered a public health problem with high worldwide prevalence. One approach to prevention is through the promotion of physical activity, especially exercise, during adolescence. Methods This study compared bone variables in different body segments in adolescents according to participation in track and field. The study included 34 adolescents (22 boys), of whom 17 were track and field athletes and 17 were control subjects. Bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) and bone mineral content (BMC, g) were analyzed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (total body stratified by body segments). Peak height velocity was used to estimate somatic maturation. Results Athletes had higher BMD (P=0.003) and BMC (P=0.011) values in the lower limbs and higher whole body BMD (P=0.025) than the control group. However, when adjusted for confounding factors, the difference was not maintained. The groups had similar lean soft tissue values (P=0.094). Training overload was positively correlated with BMD in the upper limbs (r=0.504; 95% confidence interval, 0.031-0.793). Although track and field athletes had higher BMD and BMC values in the lower limbs, these differences were not significant when adjusted for confounding factors. Conclusions Track and field participation in adolescence appears to influence BMD and BMC in lower limbs, and fat-free mass seems to mediate this effect. Also, higher training loads were found to be positive for bone health in upper limbs.

Carotid intima-media thickness was related to symptoms of insomnia (r= 0.328 [0.141 to 0.493]) and, after adjustments for potential confounders, the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness and insomnia remained statistically significant (β= 0.121 [95%CI= 0.017; 0.225]).CONCLUSIONS In young adults, sleep disorder was significantly related to premature increase in carotid intima-media thickness. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and correlates of blood pressure (BP) according to somatic maturation in Southern Brazilian adolescents. A total of 1321 adolescents participated in the study (732 girls), aged between 10 and 16 years, enrolled in public schools. The assessment of BP was performed using oscillometric equipment. Measurements of body weight, height, waist circumference, and skinfold thickness were performed. Somatic maturation was estimated by the age at peak height velocity. Behavioral and hereditary variables were obtained using a questionnaire. Early‐maturing adolescents had the highest prevalence of high BP (28%; 95% confidence interval, 24.6–33.5) compared with other maturational groups (P=.003). In late‐maturing adolescents, the variables associated with BP were paternal hypertension (systolic BP: β=4.9; diastolic BP: β=5.3) and early physical activity (systolic BP: β=−4.0; diastolic DBP: β=−3.6). In average‐maturing adolescents, waist circumference (systolic BP: β=0.3), body mass index (diastolic BP: β=0.5), and mother's hypertension (diastolic BP: β=1.8) were positively related to BP. In early‐maturing adolescents, only waist circumference (systolic BP: β=0.3; diastolic BP: β=0.3) was associated with BP. The authors conclude that the prevalence of high BP is greater in adolescents with early maturity and the outcome appears to be related to biological indicators in this group. On the other hand, in late‐maturing adolescents, behavioral and hereditary variables are more related to BP.

The aim of this study was to determine whether high blood pressure (HBP) is associated with sedentary behavior in young people even after controlling for potential confounders (gender, age, socioeconomic level, tobacco, alcohol, obesity and physical activity).In this epidemiological study, 1231 adolescents were evaluated. Blood pressure was measured with an oscillometric device and waist circumference with an inextensible tape. Sedentary behavior (watching television, computer use and playing video games) and physical activity were assessed by a questionnaire. We used mean and standard deviation to describe the statistical analysis, and the association between HBP and sedentary behavior was assessed by the chi-squared test. Binary logistic regression was used to observe the magnitude of association and cluster analyses (sedentary behavior and abdominal obesity; sedentary behavior and physical inactivity).HBP was associated with sedentary behaviors [odds ratio (OR) = 2.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.41-3.96], even after controlling for various confounders (OR = 1.68, CI = 1.03-2.75). In cluster analysis the combination of sedentary behavior and elevated abdominal obesity contributed significantly to an increased likelihood of having HBP (OR = 13.51, CI 7.21-23.97).Sedentary behavior was associated with HBP, and excess fat in the abdominal region contributed to the modulation of this association.

Objectives To analyze the relationship between different physical activity (PA) domains and sociodemographic, psychological, behavioral and biological factors in Brazilian adolescents. Methods 1,220 adolescents (55.1% female) aged between 10 and 16 years-old participated in this study. The Baecke questionnaire was used to evaluate different PA domains, namely occupational, sports and leisure-time. Socioeconomic status, number of siblings, friendships satisfaction, mother's and father's PA level and previous experience with sports were self-reported. Cardiorespiratory fitness, waist circumference, and somatic maturity were estimated by objective indicators. Linear regression was used for the main statistical analysis. Results The variables consistently related to all of the PA domains were gender (boys more active), friendship satisfaction (positive with sports and leisure-time PA and negative with occupational PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness (positive). There were also domain-specific relationships for occupational (number of siblings [β = 0.02] and father's PA [β = 0.13]), sport practice (previous experience with sports [β = 0.33], waist circumference [β = 0.01] and somatic maturity [β = −0.12]) and leisure-time PA (chronological age [β = −0.15], mother's PA [β = 0.47] and previous experience with sports [β = 0.17]). Conclusions The different domains of PA are related to specific variables in adolescence. This information may be helpful in formulating strategies for physical activity promotion, particularly in adolescents from low-to-middle income countries. Am. J. Hum. Study Design: Cross-sectional. Objectives: (i) To identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, (ii) to identify musculoskeletal disorders correlates and (iii) to identify the existence of relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and healthcare expenditures in adults attended to by the public healthcare system. Methods: Crosssectional study involving 963 adults (over 50 years of age and of both sexes) treated in basic healthcare units (BHU). The participants answered questionnaires about self-reported morbidity, economic condition, musculoskeletal symptoms, occupational activity behavior, physical therapy consultation and prescription drugs purchased. Weight and height were obtained for body mass index computation. Healthcare expenditures in the last 12 months were computed. Results: The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was 65%. Patients diagnosed with musculoskeletal system/connective tissue diseases (OR= 4.11 [2.98 – 5.67]) and people who needed to lift loads at work (OR= 1.45 [1.27 – 1.66]) presented higher likelihood to report the outcome. Moreover, occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms in shoulders, low back, knees and ankles/feet were positively related to increased prescription drugs used and medical consultations. Conclusion: There is a high occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms in Brazilian patients, which is affected by sex and occupational activity, and is positively related to increased healthcare expenditures.

Para tal, foram analisados todos os artigos publicados no triênio 2009-2011 de periódicos da área de Educação Física com estratificação B2 ou superior no QUALIS CAPES (Área 21) vigente. No levantamento bibliográfico foram encontrados 872 artigos nas cinco revistas pesquisadas, que foram classificados em sem estatística, estatística descritiva e estatística analítica. Para as análises, utilizou-se a estatística descritiva e o intervalo de confiança de 95% para comparar a diferença entre as proporções e, quando necessário, o teste qui-quadrado e regressão logística. Observou-se uma menor proporção de trabalhos com análise descritiva (7,1%; IC95% = 5,4%-8,8%) quando comparados com os artigos sem estatística (46,3%; IC95% = 42,9%-49,6%) e com estatística analítica (46,6%; IC95% = 43,2%-49,9%). O padrão de uso de procedimentos estatísticos variou entre as cinco revistas científicas e entre as áreas de concentração (Saúde, Esporte, Lazer, Educação e Outras). A proporção dos artigos que não atenderam aos pressupostos básicos para a utilização de testes paramétricos foi de 43,3%. Essa proporção não apresentou diferença significativa ao longo dos três anos analisados, região de afiliação dos primeiros e últimos autores ou em relação à titulação dos primeiros e últimos autores. O presente estudo aponta um cenário preocupante no que tange à utilização da estatística na área de Educação Física, pois, além do alto índice de trabalhos que não seguem os pressupostos básicos para utilização da estatística, essa situação parece ser comum independente da titulação dos autores, região de afiliação ou revista de publicação. The purpose of the present study was to verify the pattern of use of statistics in scientific articles published in national journals of the Physical Education area. Thus, all articles published in the 2009-2011triennium of the Physical Education journals stratified at B2 or higher in the current QUALIS CAPES (Field 21) were analyzed. The bibliographic search found 872 articles in the five journals selected, which were classified into no statistics, descriptive statistics and analytical statistics. For the analysis, descriptive statistics was performed and the 95% confidence interval to compare the difference between the proportions and, when necessary, the chi-square test and Logistic Regression. There was a lower proportion of articles with descriptive analysis (7.1%, 95%CI=5.4%-8.8%) compared with those with no statistics (46.3%, 95%CI=42.9%-49.6%) and analytical statistics (46.6%, 95%CI=43.2%-49.9%). The pattern of use of statistical procedures ranged among the five scientific journals and across fields of concentration (Health, Sport, Leisure, Education and Others). The proportion of articles which did not meet the basic assumptions for the use of parametric test was 43.3%. This proportion was not significantly different over the three years analyzed, first and last authors' region of affiliation of or for the first and last authors' degree. The present study points out a worrying scenario regarding the use of statistics in the area of Physical Education, because besides the high amount of work which do not follow the basic assumptions for statistical use , this situation seems to be common regardless of authors' degree, region of affiliation or journal of publication. Foram aplicados questionários para análise de distúrbios relacionados ao sono, variáveis sociodemográficas (sexo, idade, etnia, escolaridade), comportamentais (atividade física no lazer, etilismo e tabagismo) e de estado nutricional.RESULTADOS:Foram observados distúrbios relacionados ao sono em 46,7% da amostra, com intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%) 43,1 - 50,2. Após a análise multivariada, foi observado que o sexo feminino, com odds ratio (OR) = 1,74 (IC95% 1,26 - 2,40), escolaridade (OR = 0,49; IC95% 0,28 - 0,82), sobrepeso (OR = 1,99; IC95% 1,39 - 2,85) e obesidade (OR = 2,90; IC95% 1,94 - 4,35) foram associados à ocorrência de distúrbios relacionados ao sono.CONCLUSÃO:É elevada a ocorrência de distúrbios de sono na amostra analisada, os quais foram mais frequentes em mulheres, pessoas de menor escolaridade e com sobrepeso e obesidade. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the occurrence of sleep-related disorders among adults from Presidente Prudente, Brazil, as well as to identify associations with behavioral, socio-demographic and nutritional status variables.METHODS:After random selection of the sample, interviews were performed with 743 adults of both genders, living in Presidente Prudente, Brazil. Sleep-related disorders, demographic variables (sex, age, ethnicity and schooling), behavioral variables (leisure physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking) and nutritional status were analyzed by questionnaires.RESULTS:The prevalence of sleep-related disorders was 46.7%, with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 43.1 - 50.2. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the clustering of physical inactivity with abdominal obesity and public health care expenditure in Brazilian adults. The sample was composed of 963 patients of both genders, randomly selected in the Brazilian Public Health care System during 2010. Entire health care expenditures during the last year were computed and stratified into: medical consultations, medication dispensing, laboratory tests and overall expenditure. Waist circumference was used to diagnose abdominal obesity and physical activity was assessed by previously validated questionnaire. Sedentary and abdominally obese patients (OR= 3.01 [OR95%CI= 1.81-4.99]) had higher likelihood be inserted in the group of higher expenditures than only abdominally obese patients (OR= 1.66 [OR95%CI= 1.07-2.59]). As participantes foram divididas em dois grupos: grupo treinamento (GT, n = 37) e grupo controle (GC, n = 18). A gordura de tronco, massa gorda, percentual de gordura e massa livre de gordura foram estimadas pelo DEXA. O recordatório alimentar de 24 h foi realizado três dias não consecutivos para controle alimentar. O protocolo de treinamento consistiu de 50 minutos de treinamento resistido seguido por 30 minutos de treinamento aeróbio. Após 16 semanas de treinamento diferenças foram observadas na gordura de tronco (GC= 0,064 x GT= -0,571 Kg; p-valor= 0,020), massa gorda (GC= -0,088 x GT= -1,037 Kg; p-valor= 0,020) e massa livre de gordura (GC= -0,388 x GT= 1,049 Kg; p-valor=0,001). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 16-week program of combined aerobic and resistance training on the body composition of postmenopausal women who are obese. The participants were divided into two groups: training group (TG, n = 37) and non-trained control group (CG, n = 18). The trunk fat, fat mass, percentage of fat mass and fat-free mass were estimated using DXA. Three nonconsecutive 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted. The training protocol consisted of 50 minutes of resistance training followed by 30 minutes of aerobic training. After the 16-week training program, differences were observed in trunk fat (CG= 0.064 x TG= -0.571 Kg; p-value = .020), fat mass (CG= -0.088 x TG= -1.037 Kg; p-value = .020) and fat-free mass (CG= -0.388 x TG= 1.049 Kg; p = .001). Introduction: The indiscriminate use of different diagnostic criteria for the definition of dyslipidemia may result in inaccurate interpretations, which could compromise diagnosis and therefore the therapeutic and prophylactic actions to be taken. Objective: To analyze possible differences in prevalence rates of dyslipidemia in adolescents based on three diagnostic definitions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of a representative sample of Brazilian adolescents between 11 and 16 years of age. Blood samples were collected from 1000 students (423 boys and 577 girls) to determine fasting total cholesterol (TC), HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG). O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar e identificar os artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais que aplicaram testes de normalidade, quais os mais utilizados, se há relação com o Qualis e se no decorrer dos anos há um aumento na utilização desses testes. Para elaboração da pesquisa foram escolhidos três periódicos nacionais indexados no SciELO. Foram analisadas publicações entre 2008 e 2012. A análise descritiva foi realizada no Excel 2007 e o teste de normalidade (Shapiro Wilk) pelo SPSS, assim como a comparação entre grupos (ANOVA one way), com nível de significância de 5%. Dentre a totalidade dos Artigos Originais (n=871), foi observado que 358 citaram a utilização de teste de normalidade. Em suma, pode-se afirmar que a Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia é responsável por 46% dessas publicações. A Revista Fisioterapia e Pesquisa e Revista Fisioterapia em Movimento são responsáveis por 30,2% e 23,7% das publicações, respectivamente. Os testes estatísticos mais utilizados foram Shapiro-Wilk (n=163) e Komolgorov-Smirnov (n=137). Estes foram responsáveis por 83,8% das publicações que citaram testar a normalidade de seus dados. Ainda, 2,8% executaram outros testes e 13,4% não especificaram qual teste utilizado, porém, afirmaram testar a normalidade. Conclui-se então que o periódico nacional de maior Qualis, a Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia, possui maior rigor criterioso em relação à análise estatística e que não há diferença estatisticamente significante no número de artigos publicados que aplicaram o teste de normalidade no decorrer dos anos. Observa-se também que o teste de Shapiro-Wilk foi o mais utilizado nas publicações.

A sedentary lifestyle is increasingly implicated in a negative metabolic health profile among youth. The present study examined relationships between clustered metabolic risk factors and TV viewing in female adolescents. The sample comprised 262 girls 14–17 years. Height, weight, fasting glucose, insulin, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure were measured. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated. TV viewing time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were estimated from a 3-day diary. Outcome variables were normalized and expressed as Z scores which were summed into a metabolic risk score. Multiple linear regression analysis was used. TV viewing was independently associated with increased prevalence of clustered metabolic risk in girls after adjustment for several confounders (i.e., chronological age, BMI, MVPA, and parental education). The final model also indicated that lower levels of MVPA, higher BMI, and lower mother education were associated with higher metabolic risk. Increased TV viewing had an adverse effect on metabolic health of adolescent girls. The findings highlight the potential importance of preventive actions to ameliorate metabolic risk in youth which target both sedentary and physically active behaviors.

Therefore, verification of the factors associated with this condition in adolescence is important. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between hypertension in adolescents with hypertension and the sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle of their parents. This study was conducted on 1231 adolescents, 1202 mothers, and 871 fathers. The blood pressure of the adolescents was measured with an oscillometric device. Details of parental hypertension, sociodemographic characteristics, and lifestyle were obtained by self-report. The prevalence of hypertension was higher among adolescents with older fathers and older mothers, with both parents reporting hypertension and with mothers who were overweight. In multivariable analysis, adolescents with older mothers (OR = 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12–4.98), hypertensive mothers (OR = 2.22 [95% CI = 1.26–3.89]), and hypertensive fathers (OR = 1.70 [95% CI = 1.03–2.81]) were more likely to have hypertension. In the analysis that considered clusters of health risk factors, higher risks of hypertension were observed in adolescents whose mothers had four or more aggregated risk factors (OR = 2.53 [95% CI = 1.11–5.74]). In conclusion, there was a relationship between hypertension in adolescents and hypertension in their parents. However, an association between hypertension in adolescents and parental age and clusters of health risk factors was only observed for their mothers. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in the Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP). METHODS: The study sample consisted of 173 children and adolescents (10.31±1.87 years). The BMDs for the whole body (WB) and the regions of the trunk and legs were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). PA was measured using the Baecke questionnaire. A regression model was used to analyze the relationship between all the BMDs and the different domains of PA. RESULTS: 41.5% of the adolescents had high percentages of body fat. Regarding the comparison between physically active and insufficiently active adolescents, there were no statistically significant differences in any BMD variables (P > 0.05). The BMD of the legs showed positive relationships with the total PA (β = 0.009; P = 0.013) and sports PA (β = 0.010; P = 0.049) after insertion of the confounders. Similarly, the WB BMD showed the same relationships (total PA: β = 0.005; P = 0.045; and sports PA: β = 0.008; P = 0.049). No relationship was found between leisure and school PA and any of the BMDs (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results indicated that practice of sport was related to higher BMD values, independent of sex, age and body fatness. Material and methods A sample of 89 healthy adolescents was recruited for this study. We assessed habitual physical activity, body fat percentage, arterial thickness, blood sample, and biological maturation. Multivariate models were used to analyse the relationships between independent and dependent variables. Results Physical activity (mean difference: 429.4 steps [95% confidence interval=-427 to 1286]) and body fatness (mean difference: -0.7% [95% confidence interval=-1.6-0.2]) remained stable during the study period. Independent of changes in physical activity, for each percentage increase in body fatness, femoral intima-media thickness increased by 0.007 mm (β=0.007 [95% confidence interval=0.001-0.013]). Longitudinal relationships were found for high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (β=-0.477 mg/dl [95% confidence interval=-0.805 to -0.149]) and triacylglycerol (β=2.329 mg/dl [95% confidence interval=0.275-4.384]). Conclusion Changes in body fatness are more important than the amount of physical activity on cardiovascular and metabolic risks. Aims To analyze factors associated with osteoporosis among outpatients of the Brazilian National Health System and to identify their association with hospital and labor economic outcomes. Methods Cross-sectional study carried out in the city of Presidente Prudente / SP. The sample consisted of 542 adults of both sexes and aged ≥ 50 years old. The occurrence of osteoporosis, health-related productivity loss, use of hospital services and level of physical activity were assessed using questionnaires. OBJECTIVES To investigate the longitudinal relationship between adiposity and maturity status throughout the transition between childhood and adolescence in boys, and the moderation effect of maturation on adiposity trajectories. METHODS This was a longitudinal study conducted with 197 boys who were followed over 3 years (from childhood to adolescence). Body adiposity was estimated through the subcutaneous skinfold method, with measures of triceps and subscapular skinfolds. Skinfolds were analyzed singly and aggregated through the sum of skinfolds. Maturity status was estimated through Moore's method of estimated peak of height velocity, which uses an algorithm with stature and chronological age values and was categorized according to mean and SD. Analysis of covariance was used to test moderation effects. All analyses were conducted in STATA 14.0, at a 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS Early maturing adolescents presented higher values of body adiposity at all moments when compared with on-time and late maturing adolescents (P < .05). Moreover, maturity status moderated the association between sum of skinfolds at childhood and sum of skinfolds at adolescence (F = 2.49; P = .045). CONCLUSION Somatic maturation moderates the relationship between adiposity in childhood and adolescence, with earlier maturation associated with a greater increase in adiposity. Future tracking studies should consider the effects of maturity status when analyzing body adiposity.

Purpose: To investigate the mediating effect of muscle mass on the relationship between training load and bone density in adolescent swimmers. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 87 control and 22 swimmers aged 10–19 years (overall sample: n = 109). Swimmers had a minimum of 1 year of competition in regional and national championships, and control adolescents reported 1 year without any organized sport. Bone density was the main outcome (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), which was measured in upper limbs, lower limbs, spine, and whole body. Monthly training load was the independent variable, while the mediation effect of lean soft tissue was assessed. Maturity offset, age, inflammation, and vitamin D intake were treated as covariates. Results: Swimmers had lower bone density than controls; there was a significant and positive relationship between training load and muscle mass. In boys, training load presented a negative correlation with bone density in lower limbs [r = −.293; 95% confidence interval (CI), −.553 to −.034]. In girls, training load was negatively related to bone mineral density in lower limbs (r = .563; 95% CI, −.770 to −.356) and whole body (r = −.409; 95% CI, −.609 to −.209). Conclusion: Training load had a negative relationship on bone density of swimmers of both sexes, independently of the positive effect of lean soft tissue on bone density.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Peak height velocity (PHV) is an important maturational event during adolescence that affects skeleton size. The objective here was to compare bone variables in adolescents who practiced different types of sports, and to identify whether differences in bone variables attributed to sports practice were dependent on somatic maturation status. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study, São Paulo State University (UNESP). METHODS: The study was composed of 93 adolescents (12 to 16.5 years old), divided into three groups: no-sport group (n = 42), soccer/basketball group (n = 26) and swimming group (n = 25). Bone mineral density and content were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and somatic maturation was estimated through using peak height velocity. Data on training load were provided by the coaches. RESULTS: Adolescents whose PHV occurred at an older age presented higher bone mineral density in their upper limbs (P = 0.018). After adjustments for confounders, such as somatic maturation, the swimmers presented lower values for bone mineral density in their lower limbs, spine and whole body. Only the bone mineral density in the upper limbs was similar between the groups. There was a negative relationship between whole-body bone mineral content and the weekly training hours (β: -1563.967; 95% confidence interval, CI: -2916.484 to -211.450). CONCLUSION: The differences in bone variables attributed to sport practice occurred independently of maturation, while high training load in situations of hypogravity seemed to be related to lower bone mass in swimmers. RESUMO CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: O pico de velocidade de crescimento (PVC) constitui importante evento maturacional durante a adolescência, afetando o tamanho do esqueleto. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar variáveis ósseas em adolescentes praticantes de diferentes modalidades esportivas, bem como identificar se diferenças nas variáveis ósseas atribuídas à prática esportiva são dependentes do estado da maturação somática. DESENHO E LOCAL: Estudo transversal, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP). MÉTODOS: O estudo foi constituído por 93 adolescentes (12 a 16,5 anos), divididos em três grupos: grupo sem envolvimento esportivo (n = 42), futebol/basquete (n = 26) e natação (n = 25). A densidade e conteúdo mineral ósseo foram mensurados utilizando absortiometria de raio-x de dupla energia e a maturação somática foi estimada através do uso do PVC. Informações sobre volume de treinamento foram fornecidas pelos treinadores. RESULTADOS: Adolescentes com idade tardia no PVC apresentaram maiores valores de densidade mineral óssea em membros superiores (P = 0,018). Após ajustes por variáveis de confusão, como a maturação somática, os nadadores apresentaram menores valores de densidade mineral óssea em membros inferiores, coluna e corpo inteiro. Apenas a densidade mineral óssea de membros superiores foi similar entre os grupos. Existiu relação negativa entre conteúdo mineral ósseo de corpo inteiro e tempo de treino semanal (β: -1563.967; 95% intervalo de confiança, IC: -2916.484 a -211.450). CONCLUSÃO: As diferenças em variáveis ósseas atribuídas à prática esportiva ocorrem independentemente da maturação, enquanto elevada quantidade de treinamento em situações de hipogravidade parece estar relacionada com menor massa óssea em nadadores.

BACKGROUND Sedentary behaviors in adolescents are associated with using screen devices, analyzed as the total daily time in television viewing, using the computer and video game. However, an independent and clustered analysis of devices allows greater understanding of associations with physical inactivity domains and eating habits in adolescents. METHODS Sample of adolescents aged 10-17 years (N.=1011) from public and private schools, randomly selected. The use of screen devices was measured by hours per week spent in each device: TV, computer, videogames and mobile phone/tablet. Physical inactivity domains (school, leisure and sports), eating habits (weekly food consumption frequency) and socioeconomic status were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS The prevalence of high use of mobile phone/tablet was 70% among adolescents, 63% showed high use of TV or computer and 24% reported high use of videogames. High use of videogames was greater among boys and high use of mobile phone/tablet was higher among girls. Significant associations of high use of TV (OR=1.43, 95% CI: 1.04-1.99), computer (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.03-2.02), videogames (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.13-2.69) and consumption of snacks were observed. High use of computer was associated with fried foods consumption (OR=1.32, 95% CI: 1.01-1.75) and physical inactivity (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.03-1.95). Mobile phone was associated with consumption of sweets (OR=1.33, 95% CI: 1.00-1.80). Cluster using screen devices showed associations with high consumption of snacks, fried foods and sweets, even after controlling for confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS The high use of screen devices was associated with high consumption of snacks, fried foods, sweets and physical inactivity in adolescents.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of passive smoking during pregnancy and associated with swimming on bone area growth, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone mineral content (BMC).The offspring was grouped by control matrices (G1) and passive smokers (G2). The offspring was regrouped in eight subgroups, with exposure to smoking (2x/day) and physical exercise (1 session/day), respecting the group of matrices in: sedentary control (G1CS and G2CS), swimming control (G1CN and G2CN), sedentary passive smoker (G1FS and G2FS), and passive smoker swimmer (G1FN and G2FN). The area, BMD and BMC were measured by the tibia and femur and analyzed by densitometer. The results were analyzed by One-Way ANOVA test with Tukey post-test, with a significance level of 5%.In the tibia BMC study, a better rate was observed in G2CN group when compared to G1CS, G1CN and G1FN (p ≤ 0.023). When assessing BMD in the femur, a higher density ratio was observed in G1FS group when compared to G2CS, G2CN, G2FS and G2FN (p0.008). In the tibia study, the animals of the G1FS group had higher rates when compared to G2CS and G2FN groups (p≤0.007).The model of male offspring exposed to passive smoking during fetal development showed a strong decrease in the analyzed parameters.O objetivo desse estudo é investigar o efeito do tabagismo passivo durante a prenhez e associado à natação no crescimento de área óssea, densidade mineral óssea (DMO) e conteúdo mineral ósseo (CMO).Os filhotes foram gerados por matrizes controle (G1) e tabagistas (G2). Os filhotes foram reagrupados em oito subgrupos, com exposição ao tabagismo (2x/dia) e realização de exercício físico (1 sessão/dia), respeitando o grupo de matrizes em: controle sedentário (G1CS e G2CS), controle natação (G1CN e G2CN), tabagista passivo sedentário (G1FS e G2FS) e tabagista passivo natação (G1FN e G2FN). A área, a DMO e o CMO foram aferidos pela tíbia e pelo fêmur e analisados pelo densitômetro. Os resultados foram analisados pelo teste de ANOVA One-Way, com pós-teste de Tukey, com nível de significância de 5%.No estudo do CMO da tíbia, foi observada taxa melhor no grupo G2CN quando comparada aos filhotes dos grupos G1CS, G1CN e G1FN (p ≤ 0,023). Na averiguação da DMO no fêmur, foi observada maior taxa de densidade no grupo G1FS quando confrontado aos grupos G2CS, G2CN, G2FS e G2FN (p ≤ 0,008). Já no estudo da tíbia, os animais do grupo G1FS apresentaram maiores taxas quando comparados aos grupos G2CS e G2FN (p≤0,007).O modelo de filhotes machos expostos ao tabagismo passivo durante o desenvolvimento fetal apresentou uma forte diminuição dos parâmetros analisados. Weekday and weekend screen time (TV-viewing and computer/video-game), mental health indicators (self-rated health, stress, feelings of sadness, and satisfaction with own body), and perceived social relationships (friends, family, and teachers) were collected through questionnaires. Somatic maturation, body mass index, and physical activity were assessed as covariates.Results:Adolescents who reported higher TV-viewing presented higher odds (p < 0.05) for poor self-rated health (boys), higher stress (both sexes), and dissatisfaction with own body (boys), friendships (girls), and teachers (girls). In contrast, higher computer/video-game use was associated with lower odds (p < 0.05) for poor self-rated health (girls), higher stress (boys), feelings of sadness (both sexes), and dissatisfaction with friends (both sexes) and family (both sexes).Conclusion:While higher TV-viewing is associated with negative outcomes, higher computer/video-game users demonstrate better mental health and lower satisfaction with their social relationships. Investigations into pathways to the development of complications are important both for treatment and prevention. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between amputation and risk factors in people with diabetes mellitus. Materials and method: All participants included in this study (n = 165) were recruited from the Diabetic Foot Program, developed in a Brazilian University, over seven years (2007-2014) and all information for this study was extracted from their clinical records. Results: The prevalence of amputation in patients with diabetes with four risk factors was up to 20% higher when compared to those with only one risk factor. The main predictive risk factors for amputation in this population were the presence of an ulcer and smoking. Conclusion: The risk factors for amputation can be predicted for people with diabetes mellitus and, in the present study, the main factors were the presence of an ulcer and the smoking habit. Objective: To test the biocultural model through direct and indirect associations between biological maturation, adiposity, cardiorespiratory fitness, feelings of sadness, social relationships, and physical activity in adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 1,152 Brazilian adolescents aged between 10 and 17 years. Somatic maturation was estimated through Mirwald's method (peak height velocity). Total body fat and trunk fat were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Carotid and femoral intima-media thickness were measured using a Doppler ultrasound device. A 12-hour fasting blood sample collection was taken (fasting glucose and lipid profile). Early physical activity was assessed through face-to-face interview, and the current physical activity was assessed by pedometer (Digi-Walker Yamax, SW200), which was used for a period of seven days.Results: Current physical activity was negatively related to total cholesterol (rho=-0.31), while early physical activity was negatively related to triglycerides (rho=-0.42), total cholesterol (rho=-0.28), very low density lipoprotein (rho=-0.44), and carotid intima-media thickness (rho=-0.50). In the multivariate model, subjects engaged in sports activities during early life had lower values of very low density lipoprotein (b=-8.74 [b=-16.1; -1.47]) and carotid intima-media thickness (b=-0.17 [95%CI: -0.28; -0.05]).Conclusion: Early 95%CI physical activity has a significant influence on carotid intima-media thickness, regardless of the current physical activity. O emprego equivocado da bioestatística nas pesquisas científicas implica em erros metodológicos tanto na condução quanto nas análises das mesmas. Dentre estes, a ausência do cálculo amostral, considerado primordial para validação e credibilidade dos resultados, é frequentemente encontrado. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar com que frequência o cálculo amostral é empregado nos artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais de Educação Física. Foram incluídos no estudo somente periódicos científicos nacionais classificados entre A1 e B2 pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), dos quais foram analisados somente artigos originais disponíveis na íntegra e publicados no período de 2010 a 2012. Foram excluídos do estudo artigos de revisão, carta ao editor, ponto de vista e artigos originais que não realizaram nenhum tipo de análise estatística. Aproximadamente 15% dos artigos analisados realizaram cálculo amostral; não houve diferença entre as proporções destes ao longo dos anos. Observou-se diferença entre as subáreas da Educação Física (educação, saúde e esporte), sendo menor na subárea esporte (p=0,001) em relação às demais. Os periódicos classificados como B2 apresentaram maior uso do cálculo amostral em relação àqueles classificados como B1 (p=0,013) e A2 (p=0,007). O emprego do cálculo amostral em pesquisas científicas publicadas em periódicos nacionais de Educação Física no período de 2010 a 2012 não foi satisfatório, especialmente na subárea esporte. Além disso, não foi observada uma evolução do uso do cálculo amostral ao longo dos anos analisados.
