151. Performance of urine Xpert MTB/RIF ultra in a tuberculosis screening strategy in hospitalized patients with advanced HIV disease: Results from an implementation initiative in Brazil.

Abstract

Objectives Methods Results Conclusions To evaluate the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra testing in urine samples as part of a TB screening strategy in patients with advanced HIV disease (AHD).We conducted a multicentre prospective cohort study across three HIV reference hospitals in Brazil, between January and December 2023. The study included adult hospitalized patients with AHD, defined by a CD4 count of <200 cells/μL in the last 3 months or clinical presentation suggestive of opportunistic infection, without effective antiretroviral treatment. Participants underwent systematic tuberculosis (TB) screening using urine Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra and TB lipoarabinomannan (TB‐LAM) tests. The diagnosis performance of urine Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra was assessed including sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. Disease characterization was based on the Global Tuberculosis Dictionary. Survival at 30 and 90 days was also evaluated.Urine molecular testing was performed on 133 patients. Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra showed a sensitivity of 20.7% in bacteriologically confirmed TB cases and 21.2% in cases that included both clinically diagnosed and bacteriologically confirmed TB. The addition of urine Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra to TB‐LAM led to the detection of three additional cases, representing a 6.3% increase from the 48 cases detected by TB‐LAM. Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra had a specificity of 96.9% and no rifampicine resistance mutations were detected. Overall mortality was 16/133 (12.0%) at 30 days and 25/127 (19.7%) at 90 days.There was a high overlap between urine TB‐LAM and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra results, with the addition of Xpert MTB/RIF providing limited additional benefit for TB screening in patients with AHD. Abstract

Temperature is an elementary component in mathematical models for predicting the biotic potential of insects. In this study, the objective was to evaluate the impact of different constant temperatures of 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 32°C on the biological parameters, lower temperature thresholds (TT), and estimating the number of annual generations (NAG) of Rachiplusia nu and Chrysodeixis includens, both pests associated with the soybean crop in Brazil. There was no development of the immature stages of R. nu at 8°C, as was also found for C. includens at 8 and 10°C. However, at 10°C all stages of R. nu developed. In general, temperatures of 20 and 25°C were the most suitable for the development of R. nu and C. includens, providing egg to adult viability of over 60% and the highest total fecundities. However, the temperature of 32°C negatively affected the parameters of the fertility life table. Rachiplusia nu showed the lowest TT (eggs: 4.9°C; larvae: 10.8°C; pupa: 14.1°C; and egg to adult: 8.9°C) when compared with C. includens (eggs: 7.5°C; larvae: 15.3°C; pupa: 16.1°C; and egg to adult: 11.3°C). Based on TT values, the NAG varied from 3.9 in cold regions to 7.5 in warm regions. However, for C. includens, we can infer that the species can reach up to 8.8 generations in warm regions. The results of the present study are important for understanding the occurrence of R. nu and C. includens in field conditions and can help with the implications of management strategies. Abstract

We report a series of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in green turtles (Chelonia mydas) on the southern coast of Brazil. During 13-month period, seven animals were recovered on the coastal beach and sent to a rehabilitation center, dying after a period of captivity up to 27 days. Granulomatous nodules in the lung, with the presence of hyaline and septate hyphae, were found in all. Invasive aspergillosis was confirmed by real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Our study is the first to describe Aspergillus sp. infection in green turtles. Prospective studies are necessary to evaluate the impact of such severe fungal diseases on sea turtles. Abstract

The rapid diagnosis of opportunistic infections (OIs) is critical for improving the health outcomes of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study aimed to describe the feasibility of implementing a package for the rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis in patients with advanced HIV/AIDS disease in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The research involved two focus groups with health professionals, four in-depth interviews with healthcare managers, and twelve interviews with PLWHA. The corpus was analyzed using Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC). The study found that the rapid test diagnosis intervention was generally well-received by patients and health professionals, improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes. However, it also identified several areas for improvement, including the need for expanded psychosocial support and enhanced coordination between health services. The findings have important implications for the development and implementation of policies and programs aimed at enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of OIs among PLWHA with advanced diseases. Further research should explore social determinants of HIV/AIDS mortality to offer valuable insights into improving prevention and treatment strategies. By prioritizing patient-centered care and improving coordination between health services, policymakers and health professionals can improve the health outcomes of PLWHA with advanced disease in Porto Alegre and other similar settings. Abstract

Background: The Lichtenstein technique is the gold standard for adult open inguinal hernia repair with mesh. The Desarda technique emerged in 2001 as a novel, promising non‐mesh technique that has demonstrated low recurrence and postoperative complications. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Clinical Trials, and Embase for randomized controlled trials (RCT) published until April 2024. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using a random‐effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran's Q test and I2 statistics, with p‐values <0.10 and I2>25% considered significant. Statistical analysis was performed using the R software, version 4.1.2. Results: Eighteen RCTs comprising 1756 patients were included, of whom 861 (49%) were submitted to Desarda and 895 (51%) were submitted to Lichtenstein. Desarda was associated with lower seroma rates (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.35–0.89; and p = 0.014), less operative time (MD −8.6 min; 95% CI −14.5 to −2.8; and p < 0.01), lower postoperative pain on day one (MD −1.3 VAS score; 95% CI −2.3 to −0.3; p < 0.01) or chronic pain (OR 0.32; 95% CI 0.12–0.88; and p = 0.028), and faster return‐to‐work activities (MD −2.1 days; 95% CI −3.7 to −0.6; and p < 0.01). The recurrence rate was 1.4% for Desarda versus 2.1% for Lichtenstein, with no statistical difference between techniques. Conclusion: In this meta‐analysis, Desarda significantly decreases seroma operative time, postoperative pain on day 1, chronic pain, and return‐to‐work activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The Lichtenstein technique is the standard treatment for adult open inguinal hernia repair. Among the non‐mesh repair techniques, Shouldice has shown the best results and is comparable to mesh repairs in selected cases. Due to the risk of chronic groin pain associated with the Lichtenstein technique, Shouldice has increased in popularity, and some surgeons have adopted it as a viable first‐line option. Methods: MEDLINE, Cochrane, Central Register of Clinical Trials, and EMBASE for randomized controlled trials (RCT) published until February 2024. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using a random‐effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics with p‐values <0.10 and I2 > 25% considered significant. Statistical analysis was performed using R Software, version 4.1.2. Results: Fourteen RCTs comprising 2784 patients were included, of whom 1379 (47.5%) were submitted to the Shouldice hernia repair and 1513 (52.5%) to the Lichtenstein technique. Shouldice was associated with a significant increase in the recurrence rate (4.2% vs. 0.9%; RR 3.68; 95% CI 2.05–6.60; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%) compared with Lichtenstein. The number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one Shouldice recurrence was 30.3. There were no significant differences between groups in chronic pain, urinary retention, bladder injury, testicular atrophy, wound infection, hematoma–seroma, or hypesthesia. Conclusion: The Lichtenstein technique was associated with reduced recurrence rates compared with Shouldice in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair. However, the overall recurrence rate with the Shouldice technique was still low (4.2%), suggesting that it may be a viable option in selected patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract

An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

161. A Multifactorial Model of Dyslexia: Evidence from Executive Functions and Phonological-Based Treatments

Abstract

In this research, we examined the responsiveness to treatment in 49 Italian children with Dyslexia. In part A, we compare the efficacy of a phonological-based treatment (Ph-T) with a cognitive training of executive functions (CT). In part B, we investigate whether a sequential treatment (CT+Ph-T) has a larger remedial effect compared to the pure phonological-based treatment (Ph-T + Ph-T). Results after 24 hours of treatment showed significant improvements in the executive functions (EFs) for the sequential group only. Considering reading accuracy, children benefited significantly from both treatments; however, only the sequential group significantly improved in reading speed. Crucially, the reading gains appeared to be related to improvements in the EFs, supporting a multifactorial model of this disorder. The aforementioned findings suggest that the combination of cognitive training of EFs with a phonological-based treatment can be used effectively in rehabilitating dyslexia.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Salmonella Heidelberg is an emerging pathogen in Brazilian poultry production. The traditional methods (quicklime, windrowing and tarpaulin-on-surface) used for disinfecting reused poultry litter between flocks does not guarantee its elimination, thus allowing the transmission of this agent from one flock to another. The new tarpaulin-on-surface method with controlled injection of ammonia gas has proven to be effective in its control, however, it is still unknown what dose of ammonia gas is needed to eliminate Salmonella Heidelberg in reused poultry litter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ammonia gas at different concentrations in sterile poultry litter artificially contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg. Then, ammonia gas was injected in concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1%, and 48 hours later, a sample was collected from each repetition in an entirely randomized design, and bacterial isolation was performed. All treatments, including positive and negative controls, were tested in quadruplicate and the parameters temperature, humidity, pH and water activity were evaluated. In the 0.5% and 1% treated samples the pathogen was not isolated, while in the 0.25% concentration one of the four samples tested was positive. The study reveals that ammonia gas is efficient in killing Salmonella Heidelberg in poultry litter at concentrations of 0.5 % or more within a 48-hour period and that the litter treated with ammonia gas increases its pH and water activity.

Abstract

Este artigo apresenta resultados de uma pesquisa que investigou a produção de memórias e esquecimentos relacionada ao extinto "Abrigo Municipal de Alienados Oscar Schneider", instituição que funcionou em Joinville/SC entre 1923 e 1942 e teve seu prédio demolido cerca de 50 anos depois da sua construção. A inauguração da instituição marcou o início do projeto de "modernização-urbanização" de Joinville, pautado em normas higiênicas centradas nas novas prerrogativas da ciência moderna. Para a realização da pesquisa, rastreamos documentos que contam a história do Abrigo de Alienados: encontramos fotografias, um cartão-postal, trechos de documentos oficiais e notícias de jornal. Com esses documentos, problematizamos o campo de produção da fama e da infâmia em relação a determinados personagens que compuseram a cena dos acontecimentos dessa instituição. O olhar para os registros do Abrigo de Alienados procurou tensionar as diversas vozes que ali se encontram para seguir os rastros insignificantes de uma história, os quais correspondem a certos fatos e sujeitos que não foram considerados dignos de serem memorados: as vidas que sofreram a experiência do confinamento no Abrigo.

Abstract

In a context of food crisis, environmental pollution, growing awareness of social responsibility and sustainability, the search for local and organic products acquired through local fairs has been growing. On this context, the study aimed to analyze the aspects regarding to environmental, social and economic sustainability identified in the exhibitors of food products at farmers market that foster the local economy in Montreal, Canada. A qualitative research was carried out and the data were collected through personal interviews and participant observation. It was identified as the main sustainable practices: organic food production without chemicals uses, waste reduction and use of packaging that does not harm the environment. Regarding social sustainability, it was identified that farmers market strengthens relations between producers and customers. Regarding economic sustainability, the study showed that customers value local products. These results are important for the sustainable development of the region, the establishment of sociocultural relations and the promotion of social well-being.

Abstract

In this note we prove decay for the spin $\pm$1 Teukolsky Equations on the Schwarzschild spacetime. These equations are those satisfied by the extreme components ($\alpha$ and $\underline \alpha$) of the Maxwell field, when expressed with respect to a null frame. The subject has already been addressed in the literature, and the interest in the present approach lies in the connection with the recent work by Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski on linearized gravity [M. Dafermos, G. Holzegel and I. Rodnianski, The linear stability of the Schwarzschild solution to gravitational perturbations, arXiv:1601.06467]. In analogy with the spin $\pm2$ case, it seems difficult to directly prove Morawetz estimates for solutions to the spin $\pm1$ Teukolsky Equations. By performing a differential transformation on the extreme components $\alpha$ and $\underline \alpha$, we obtain quantities which satisfy a Fackerell--Ipser Equation, which does admit a straightforward Morawetz estimate, and is the key to the decay estimates. This approach is exactly analogous to the strategy appearing in the aforementioned work on linearized gravity. We achieve inverse polynomial decay estimates by a streamlined version of the physical space $r^p$ method of Dafermos and Rodnianski. Furthermore, we are also able to prove decay for all the components of the Maxwell system. The transformation that we use is a physical space version of a fixed-frequency transformation which appeared in the work of Chandrasekhar. Abstract

Introduction: As periodontitis is caused by dysbiotic biofilm, it is believed that therapy with probiotics can act to control the mechanisms of adhesion and colonization, competing with invading microorganisms. Objective: Evaluate probiotic therapy effect on periodontal tissues and intestinal mucosa of rats with ligature-induced periodontitis. Methods: 32 Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n=8): Control Group (CG); Periodontal disease (PD); Probiotic (PROB); PD + probiotic (PDPRO). PD and PDPRO received a ligature over the first lower molars and PROB and PDPRO the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus based were given orally for 44 days. The animals were euthanized and the blood was collected for evaluation of triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations. The hemimandibles were collected for histomorphometric and radiographic analysis. The duodenum was removed for morphological evaluation and gingival tissue around the molars was collected for analysis of IL-17. Results: The ANOVA one-way test was used followed by Tukey Test. Abstract

This study focused on evaluating the application of digital tools with features of gamification, aims to evaluate the efficacy, in terms of motivation, engagement and improvement of crucial life skills, reading and writing abilities. The training involved children who attended the Primary School both with typical development and Special Educational Needs (SEN), in particular Specific Learning Disorders. Statistically significant differences emerged – before and after the training – highlighting improvements in the reading and writing abilities in all groups analysed. There was no statistical effect regarding the mediation of motivation on final learning performances; however, children reported high engagement and fun in the gamified activity. In conclusion, this strategy it can be a useful implementation both in the school and in the clinical environment to improve reading and writing abilities, also in children with SEN. L’uso della gamification per il potenziamento delle abilità di letto-scrittura nella Scuola Primaria. Questo studio ha come obiettivo quello di valutare l’efficacia, in termini di motivazione, coinvolgimento e potenziamento di alcune importanti life skills, quali la letto-scrittura, dell’utilizzo di strumenti digitali con caratteristiche di gamification. La presente ricerca ha coinvolto bambini frequentanti la Scuola Primaria sia a sviluppo tipico che con Bisogni Educativi Speciali (BES), in particolare Disturbi Specifici dell’Apprendimento. Sono emerse differenze statisticamente significative – prima e dopo il training – evidenziando dei miglioramenti nelle abilità di letto-scrittura in tutti i gruppi indagati. Non sono emersi degli effetti significativi di mediazione della motivazione sulle performance finali, ma i bambini hanno riportato un elevato coinvolgimento e gradimento dell’attività gamificata. In conclusione, tale strategia può essere un’utile implementazione all’interno dell’ambito scolastico e clinico per potenziare le abilità di letto-scrittura, anche in bambini con BES.

INTRODUÇÃO: A iniciativa Choosing Wisely visa promover a discussão entre os profissionais da saúde e pacientes, a fim de reduzir os cuidados de baixo valor que não oferecem nenhum benefício ou podem causar prejuízos para a saúde. OBJETIVO: Descrever o processo de desenvolvimento da lista brasileira Choosing Wisely de Fisioterapia na Saúde da Mulher/Assoalho Pélvico. MÉTODO: A pesquisa será realizada em três etapas. Na primeira etapa, fisioterapeutas com experiência em Saúde da Mulher/Assoalho Pélvico serão convidados para compor um painel de especialistas e responderão a um formulário. O método Delphi será utilizado para se obter uma lista de declarações baseadas em evidência. Na segunda etapa, os membros da equipe de pesquisa analisarão todas as declarações fornecidas pelo painel de especialistas. Na terceira etapa, uma amostra de fisioterapeutas votará nas declarações selecionadas anteriormente. As declarações com mais votos na pesquisa nacional serão submetidas à Choosing Wisely Brasil, e uma lista final de recomendações será publicada.

Abstract

O Superior Tribunal de Justiça – STJ - tem remansosa jurisprudência negando direito de indenização aos fumantes e às suas famílias quando buscam reparação dos danos à saúde causados pelos produtos derivados do tabaco. Para o STJ, prevalece o livre arbítrio do fumante ao decidir fumar, ainda que conhecendo os riscos à saúde inerentes ao consumo de tabaco. O tribunal também considera que, à luz do Código de Defesa do Consumidor, o cigarro não é um produto defeituoso, por não oferecer legítima expectativa de segurança ao consumidor. Aparentemente, a orientação do STJ contrasta com decisões do Supremo Tribunal Federal – STF - que dão primazia à proteção de bens como a saúde e o maio ambiente quando colocados em risco por interesses econômicos. O presente artigo procura enfatizar o contraste entre as duas orientações, especialmente após a decisão do STF que considerou constitucional a proibição da publicidade de tabaco

Abstract

The present work investigates nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) for the removal of three widely used pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), namely atenolol, sulfamethoxazole, and rosuvastatin. Four membranes, two polyamide NF membranes (NF90 and NF270) and two polyethersulfone UF membranes (XT and ST), were evaluated in terms of productivity (permeate flux) and selectivity (rejection of PhACs) at pressures from 2 to 8 bar. Although the UF membranes have a much higher molecular weight cut-off (1000 and 10,000 Da), when compared to the molecular weight of the PhACs (253–482 Da), moderate rejections were observed. For UF, rejections were dependent on the molecular weight and charge of the PhACs, membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), and operating pressure, demonstrating that electrostatic interactions play an important role in the removal of PhACs, especially at low operating pressures. On the other hand, both NF membranes displayed high rejections for all PhACs studied (75–98%). Hence, considering the optimal operating conditions, the NF270 membrane (MWCO = 400 Da) presented the best performance, achieving permeate fluxes of about 100 kg h−1 m−2 and rejections above 80% at a pressure of 8 bar, that is, a productivity of about twice that of the NF90 membrane (MWCO = 200 Da). Therefore, NF270 was the most suitable membrane for this application, although the tight UF membranes under low operating pressures displayed satisfactory results.

Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) has a high economic burden and is strongly related to the degenerative process of the spine, especially in the intervertebral disc and of the facet joints. Numerous treatment modalities have been proposed for the management of LBP, and the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as an innovative therapeutic option for degenerative disease of the spine. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of PRP injections in managing low back pain. Methods: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations, a registered at PROSPERO Systematic Reviews Platform, under number CRD42021268491. The PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched to identify relevant articles, along with hand searching to identify gray literature articles, with no language restrictions. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs), nonrandomized trials (NRTs), and case series (CSs) with more than 10 patients were considered eligible. The quality assessment and the risk of bias of the randomized clinical trials were evaluated using the RoB II tool. An evaluation of the description of the preparation methods was performed using an adapted version of the MIBO checklist. Results: An electronic database search resulted in 2324 articles, and after the exclusion of noneligible articles, 13 RCTs and 27 NRTs or CSs were analyzed. Of the 13 RCTs, 11 found favorable results in comparison to the control group in pain and disability, one showed no superiority to the control group, and one was discontinued because of the lack of therapeutic effect at eight-week evaluation. Description of the PRP preparation techniques were found in almost all papers. The overall risk of bias was considered high in 2 papers and low in 11. An adapted MIBO checklist showed a 72.7% compliance rate in the selected areas. Conclusions: In this systematic review, we analyzed articles from English, Spanish and Russian language, from large databases and grey literature. PRP was in general an effective and safe treatment for degenerative LPB. Positive results were found in almost studies, a small number of adverse events were related, the risk of bias of the RCTs was low. Based on the evaluation of the included studies, we graded as level II the quality of the evidence supporting the use of PRP in LBP. Large-scale, multicenter RCTs are still needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract

Abstract Background Soil organic carbon (SOC) affects essential biological, biochemical, and physical soil functions such as nutrient cycling, water retention, water distribution, and soil structure stability. The Andean páramo known as such a high carbon and water storage capacity ecosystem is a complex, heterogeneous and remote ecosystem complicating field studies to collect SOC data. Here, we propose a multi-predictor remote quantification of SOC using Random Forest Regression to map SOC stock in the herbaceous páramo of the Chimborazo province, Ecuador. Results Spectral indices derived from the Landsat-8 (L8) sensors, OLI and TIRS, topographic, geological, soil taxonomy and climate variables were used in combination with 500 in situ SOC sampling data for training and calibrating a suitable predictive SOC model. The final predictive model selected uses nine predictors with a RMSE of 1.72% and a R2 of 0.82 for SOC expressed in weight %, a RMSE of 25.8 Mg/ha and a R2 of 0.77 for the model in units of Mg/ha. Satellite-derived indices such as VARIG, SLP, NDVI, NDWI, SAVI, EVI2, WDRVI, NDSI, NDMI, NBR and NBR2 were not found to be strong SOC predictors. Relevant predictors instead were in order of importance: geological unit, soil taxonomy, precipitation, elevation, orientation, slope length and steepness (LS Factor), Bare Soil Index (BI), average annual temperature and TOA Brightness Temperature. Conclusions Variables such as the BI index derived from satellite images and the LS factor from the DEM increase the SOC mapping accuracy. The mapping results show that over 57% of the study area contains high concentrations of SOC, between 150 and 205 Mg/ha, positioning the herbaceous páramo as an ecosystem of global importance. The results obtained with this study can be used to extent the SOC mapping in the whole herbaceous ecosystem of Ecuador offering an efficient and accurate methodology without the need for intensive in situ sampling.

Abstract

Temperature is an elementary component in mathematical models for predicting the biotic potential of insects. In this study, the objective was to evaluate the impact of different constant temperatures of 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 32°C on the biological parameters, lower temperature thresholds (TT), and estimating the number of annual generations (NAG) of Rachiplusia nuand Chrysodeixis includens, both pests associated with the soybean crop in Brazil. There was no development of the immature stages of R. nuat 8°C, as was also found for C. includensat 8 and 10°C. However, at 10°C all stages of R. nudeveloped. In general, temperatures of 20 and 25°C were the most suitable for the development of R. nuand C. includens, providing egg to adult viability of over 60% and the highest total fecundities. However, the temperature of 32°C negatively affected the parameters of the fertility life table. Rachiplusia nushowed the lowest TT (eggs: 4.9°C; larvae: 10.8°C; pupa: 14.1°C; and egg to adult: 8.9°C) when compared with C. includens(eggs: 7.5°C; larvae: 15.3°C; pupa: 16.1°C; and egg to adult: 11.3°C). Based on TT values, the NAG varied from 3.9 in cold regions to 7.5 in warm regions. However, for C. includens, we can infer that the species can reach up to 8.8 generations in warm regions. The results of the present study are important for understanding the occurrence of R. nuand C. includensin field conditions and can help with the implications of management strategies.
