Sustainability on food Farmers Market in Canada

Abstract
- In a context of food crisis, environmental pollution, growing awareness of social responsibility and sustainability, the search for local and organic products acquired through local fairs has been growing. On this context, the study aimed to analyze the aspects regarding to environmental, social and economic sustainability identified in the exhibitors of food products at farmers market that foster the local economy in Montreal, Canada. A qualitative research was carried out and the data were collected through personal interviews and participant observation. It was identified as the main sustainable practices: organic food production without chemicals uses, waste reduction and use of packaging that does not harm the environment. Regarding social sustainability, it was identified that farmers market strengthens relations between producers and customers. Regarding economic sustainability, the study showed that customers value local products. These results are important for the sustainable development of the region, the establishment of sociocultural relations and the promotion of social well-being.
