Wheat bran separated in the standard milling process as a by-product contains many substances of importance in livestock and human nutrition. In the Czech Republic, as in other Central European countries, a significant part of the bran is not traditionally used as a raw material for feed production and is used as a heating fuel. This means that many interesting and health-promoting components of fiber, phenolic compounds, vitamins, proteins, and minerals are lost. The bran is made up of particles of the grain outer coating and sub-coating layers, particularly the pericarp, testa, and aleurone layer. Their composition varies, but while the pericarp in particular is largely composed of cellulose and lignin, the testa and aleurone layer contain many valuable non-starch polysaccharides (hemicelluloses), as well as the macro- and micronutrients mentioned above. Wholemeal flours contain all the anatomical parts of the grain mentioned above, which brings both technological problems in terms of their bakery processing and a not always acceptable sensory impact on the products. This paper summarizes selected physical and physicochemical methods that can be used to remove those components that may cause technological and sensory problems and retain those that, on the other hand, represent a significant nutritional benefit. The purpose of this research article was to study the physicochemical characteristics of semi-wild Jara honey grown in Western Georgia. Jara honey is produced in the alpine and sub-alpine forest zone of high mountain Adjara, which is distinguished by its variety of honey plants. The physicochemical characteristics were examined concerning the Alimemtarius Code and EU regulations: moisture content, total carbohydrates, free acidity, pH, electrical conductivity, microelements (Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca), color, total phenols, total phenolic acids, total flavonoids, proline, diastase activity, proteins, and microscopic study of pollens. Using the UPLC-MSB method, grayanotoxin-III was identified in the semi-wild Jara honey samples. The findings demonstrated that the honey has significant concentrations of phenols, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. A directly proportional relationship was established between the quantitative content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of honey. Background: The global probiotics dietary supplements market size is continuously growing. To overcome probiotics' health concerns, metabiotics are recognized as a safer alternative. Aiming to deal with the escalating antimicrobial resistance, the current work demonstrates synergistic metabiotic-antibiotic combinations against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Methods: The probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from 3 commercial dietary supplements were characterized in vitro. The combinations of the cell-free supernatants (CFS) of selected probiotic strains and conventional antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli clinical isolates were evaluated using the time-kill assay. To our knowledge, the current literature lacks sufficient time-kill assay studies revealing the kinetics of such metabiotic-antibiotic combinations against S. aureus and E. coli. Results: Four LAB strains isolated from dietary supplements as well as two reference strains were included in this study. The isolated LAB strains were identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry as follows: P2: Lactobacillus acidophilus, P3: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, P4: Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and P5: Pediococcus acidilactici. The identification matched with that annotated by the manufacturers, except for P3. The tested strains could resist the acidic environment at pH 3. Excluding P2, the examined strains showed less than 1 log reduction in survivors upon the addition of reconstituted skimmed milk to pepsin at pH 2 and displayed an acceptable tolerance to 0.3% ox-bile. All the strains tolerated pancreatin. The hydrophobicity and autoaggregation capacities ranged between 7–92% and 36–66%, respectively. P2 was excluded owing to its inferior probiotic potential. Although the remaining strains showed excellent growth at 0.2% phenol, their growth was reduced at higher concentrations. L. plantarum and P. acidilactici strains possessed bile salt hydrolysis activity. The time-kill assay revealed promising synergistic activities of the combinations of CFS of L. rhamnosus P4 with either ceftazidime or gentamicin against E. coli and with only ceftazidime against S. aureus, as well as CFS of P. acidilactici P5 and ceftazidime against S. aureus. Conclusions: Strict identification and evaluation of the probiotic strains incorporated in dietary supplements is crucial to ensure their safety and efficacy. The CFS of probiotics could be utilized to formulate novel biotherapeutics targeting problematic pathogens. However, future in vivo studies are required to evaluate the appropriate treatment regimen. In this study, ice cream functionalized with guabijú (Myrcianthes pungens) and Lactobacillus paracasei was developed and characterized, using 4%, 8%, and 12% of guabijú powder. The ice creams had bioactive characteristics, evidenced by anthocyanins (7.41 to 11.41 mg 100 g−1), phenolic compounds (215 to 317 mg GAE 100 g−1), and antioxidant capacity (EC50 1829 to 472 g g−1 DPPH) (p < 0.05). Moreover, ice creams had the characteristic color of guabijú, suitable overrun, L. paracasei viability and sensory acceptance – guabijú powder up to 8% presented an acceptance index > 80%, and purchase intention in the degree “would certainly buy.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to examine employing ultrasound‐assisted extraction of bioactive components from Moringa oleifera leaves and apply them in beef patties preservation, as well as antioxidant and inhibitory activities and sensory qualities. The study included studying the chemical content and minerals of the M. oleifera leaves, preparation of aqueous and alcoholic extracts using an ultrasound device, then exploring the extraction yield. The results proved that the extraction yield by ultrasound using ethanol at 80% was the highest, reaching 19.22%. The total phenols in the ultrasonic extract with moringa leaves aqueous extract (AMEUS) amounted to 120,755 mg/mL. Since the AMEUS exhibited the highest value of 68.308 mg/mL calic acid – eight phenolic compounds discovered by HPLC – the total content of flavonoids was also calculated. The inhibitory and antioxidant effects of moringa leaf extracts are well documented. We monitored the changes in chemical indicators, such as the value of peroxide and thiobarbituric acid, as well as the percentage of free fatty acids and physical characteristics, such as water‐carrying capacity, pH, and pigments, for storage periods 0, 4, 8, and 12 days after adding AMEUS to beef patties at a concentration of 0.5%. The patties were kept under refrigeration at 4 ± 1°C during this time. The values of peroxide number, thiobarbituric acid, free fatty acid, and metmyoglobin pigment were decreased in the beef patties treated with the AMEUS. However, they increased continuously during the cryopreservation period, and there was a significant increase in water‐holding capacity (WHC) when the beef patties were treated with AMEUS. The oxidation of phenolic compounds is one of the most important reactions prevalent in various biological processes, often explicitly coupled with proton transfers (PTs). Quantitative descriptions and molecular-level understanding of these proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions have been challenging. This work reports a direct observation of PCET in photodetachment (PD) photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) of hydrogen-bonded phenolic (ArOH) nitrate (NO3−) complexes, in which a much slower rising edge provides a spectroscopic signature to evidence PCET. Electronic structure calculations unveil the PCET processes to be isomer-specific, occurred only in those with their HOMOs localized on ArOH, leading to charge-separated transient states ArOH•+·NO3− triggered by ionizing phenols while simultaneously promoting PT from ArOH•+ to NO3−. Importantly, this study showcases that gas-phase PD-PES is a generic means enabling to identify PCET reactions with explicit structural and binding information. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Achachairu is an exotic fruit that is being studied for its bioactive compound composition. However, there is scarce information on the properties of its by‐products and their incorporation into food. In this study, achachairu peels were used to obtain phenolic‐rich and sustainable ingredients. Furthermore, their potential for use in the fortification of food, particularly cereal‐based products, was evaluated. Different ratios of ethanol:water were used to extract the phenolic compounds from achachairu (100:0, 90:10 and 70:30). The optimal extract was characterised regarding its total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti‐enzymatic properties. Finally, achachairu peel powder and extract were incorporated into bread and their influence on the texture, antioxidant properties and shelf life of the product was evaluated.High‐performance liquid chromatographic analysis showed that the 90:10 extract contained a higher phenolic composition than the other samples. The achachairu extract presented a TPC of 88.7 mgGAE g−1, good antioxidant capacity towards DPPH and ABTS radicals and the capacity to inhibit the activity of α‐amylase by almost 80%. The addition of achachairu peel powder and extract to bread increased its hardness, chewiness and gumminess, not affecting the remaining texture parameters. An increase in the TPC, antioxidant properties and shelf life of the product was also observed.This study proves the potential for achachairu by‐products incorporated into cereal‐based products to improve their biological properties while extending the food shelf life. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Direct aromatization of cyclohexanones to synthesize substituted phenols represents a significant challenge in modern synthetic chemistry. Herein, we describe a novel ene‐reductase (TsER) catalytic system that converts substituted cyclohexanones into the corresponding phenols. This process involves the successive dehydrogenation of two saturated carbon‐carbon bonds within the six‐membered ring of cyclohexanones and utilizes molecular oxygen to drive the reaction cycle. The escalating incidence of health issues linked to environmental pollutants, specifically endocrine‐disrupting chemicals (EDCs), has emerged as a dire consequence of modern industrialization. Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread EDC, is under scrutiny for its potential role in exacerbating bladder cancer via the modulation of cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs). CAFs are integral to the tumor microenvironment, influencing cancer progression through their interactions with immune cells and secretion of various factors and exosomes. By recognizing the critical role of CAFs, this study delves into their utility as therapeutic targets, focusing on the identification of reliable biomarkers within CAFs for bladder cancer. Through weighted correlation network analysis, genes associated with T cell activity were pinpointed, culminating in the creation of a CAFs‐based, immune‐related gene prognostic model. Central to this model is ANPEP, an enzyme whose expression level not only serves as an indicator of T cell infiltration but also implicates a substantial role in the CAF‐mediated immunotherapy responses for bladder cancer. Our investigation posits ANPEP as a linchpin in regulating CAF functions, offering a novel perspective wherein targeting ANPEP may reduce the adverse side effects commonly associated with traditional immunotherapies. Furthermore, ANPEP‐targeted strategies could lessen the tumor mutational burden in bladder cancer patients. Empirical evidence from our proliferation and invasion assays indicates that heightened ANPEP expression is correlated with diminished patient survival. We herein describe a method in the synthesis of aryl ether derivatives from a cross‐coupling reaction of vinylidenecyclopropane‐diesters (VDCP‐diesters) with commercially available phenolic compounds for the formation of C−O bond under palladium catalysis and assisted by Sc(OTf)3/Cs2CO3. This developed transformation proceeds through a nucleophilic addition at the 2‐position of allenic moiety at 50 °C for 4.0 h and is compatible with substituents such as bromine, iodine and borate on the phenolic substrates via a zwitterionic π‐propargyl palladium species, affording the desired products in 29% to 95% isolated yields. This work presents a novel approach for the electrochemical detection of p-nitrophenol (pNP) focusing on the development of a simple and efficient strategy to overcome pNP adsorption. The proposed method involves the functionalization of a silver (Ag) electrode with an electrografted, thin diazonium film. After characterization by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry, the as-functionalized electrode allowed a wide linear detection range to be established in aqueous solutions, spanning from 1 to 500 μM pNP. This outcome indicates that the diazonium film effectively addresses any issues related to adsorption with good repeatability and reproducibility. Furthermore, the sensor's analytical performances were evaluated yielding a sensitivity and a limit of detection of 0.3819 μA cm−2 μM−1 and 600 nM, respectively. As an efficient and environmental‐friendly strategy, electrocatalytic oxidation can realize biomass lignin valorization by cleaving its aryl ether bonds to produce value‐added chemicals. However, the complex and polymerized structure of lignin presents challenges in terms of reactant adsorption on the catalyst surface, which hinders further refinement. Herein, NiCo‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as the electrocatalyst to enhance the adsorption of reactant molecules through π‐π interaction. More importantly, lattice strain is introduced into the MOFs via curved ligand doping, which enables tuning of the d‐band center of metal active sites to align with the reaction intermediates, leading to stronger adsorption and higher electrocatalytic activity toward bond cleavage within lignin model compounds and native lignin. When 2′‐phenoxyacetophenone is utilized as the model compound, high yields of phenol (76.3%) and acetophenone (21.7%) are achieved, and the conversion rate of the reactants reaches 97%. Following pre‐oxidation of extracted poplar lignin, >10 kinds of phenolic compounds are received using the as‐designed MOFs electrocatalyst, providing ≈12.48% of the monomer, including guaiacol, vanillin, eugenol, etc., and p‐hydroxybenzoic acid dominates all the products. This work presents a promising and deliberately designed electrocatalyst for realizing lignin valorization, making significant strides for the sustainability of this biomass resource. Free radical is a marker in various inflammatory diseases. The antioxidant effect protects us from this damage, which also plays an essential role in preventing inflammation. Inflammation protects the body from biological stimuli, and pro-inflammatory mediators are negatively affected in the immune system. Inflammation caused by LPS is an endotoxin found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, which induces immune cells to produce inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase. Based on this, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of plant extracts were investigated. First, the main phenolic compounds for the five peaks obtained from Stachys affinis extract (SAE) were identified. The antioxidant effect of each phenolic compound was confirmed through HPLC analysis before and after the competitive binding reaction between DPPH and the extract. Afterward, the anti-inflammatory effect of each phenolic compound was confirmed through competitive binding between COX2 and the extract in HPLC analysis. Lastly, the anti-inflammatory effect of SAE was confirmed through in vitro experiments and also confirmed in terms of structural binding through molecular docking. This study confirmed that phenolic compounds in SAE extract have potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may provide information for primary screening of medicinal plants. Introduction: Plants respond to water stress with a variety of physiological and biochemical changes, but their response varies among species, varieties and cultivars. Waterlogging in tomato reduces plant growth, degrade chlorophyll and increase concentration of oxidative parameters. Priming can alleviate stress in plants caused by waterlogging enabling plants to be more tolerant to an additional stress in the current or even subsequent generation. The aim of this study was to evaluate tomato genotypes for their sensitivity to waterlogging stress applied during early vegetative growth and at full flowering stage. Materials and methods: The study included two local genotypes, Trebinjski sitni (GB1126) and Žuti (GB1129), and the reference variety Novosadski jabučar (NJ), which is the variety most commonly used in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The activity of class III peroxidase (POX), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured spectrophotometrically, and for quantification of individual phenolic compounds, targeted approach was adopted, using UHPLC/DAD/(-)HESI-MS² instrument (Dionex UltiMate 3000 UHPLC system with a DAD detector, configured with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer TSQ Quantum Access Max (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Germany)). Results and discussion: Oxidative parameters (H2O2 and MDA) exhibited an increase in content in leaves of tomato plants that underwent waterlogging stress compared to control plants. Moreover, oxidative parameters showed positive correlation with proteins and phenolics content. The obtained correlations can indicate that one of the response strategies of tomato plants to waterlogging is the increased synthesis of proteins and phenolic compounds. The POX activity was not correlated with other parameters except with the polyphenols. A positive correlation was shown between POX activity and the content of phenolic compounds, indicating their independent roles in the removal of ROS. Changes in the phenolic profiles after the exposure of plants to waterlogging stress are recorded, and these changes were more severe in leaves and fruits of GB1129 and NJ genotypes than in GB1126. Thus, genotype GB1126 is the most efficient in maintaining the phenolic profiles of leaves and fruits, and therefore of the nutritive and organoleptic qualities of fruits following the exposure to waterlogging. Also, genotype GB1126 exhibited the ability to maintain the content of oxidative parameters during waterlogging at certain growth stages, implying certain waterlogging tolerance. Conclusion: Waterlogging triggered stress memory but not at all growth stages. The most pronounced stress memory was obtained in fruit samples in the phase of full fruit maturity on the 1st truss. This study shed light on the defense mechanisms of tomato plants to repeated waterlogging stress from the perspectives of the changes in the composition of major phenolics, and pointed to the 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and rutin as the chemical markers of the waterlogging stress tolerance in tomato. However, it remains to be determined whether this modulation has a positive or negative effect on the overall plant metabolism. This study evaluated growth, yield and olive oil quality of mature pedestrian olive orchards. Trees of three Sicilian cultivars Calatina, Nocellara del Belice and Abunara were planted at four combinations of planting densities and training forms. Trees at 2 × 5 m were trained to central leader (CLx2), those at 3 × 5 m to free palmette (FPx3), those at 4 x 5 to globe vase (GVx4), and those at 5 x 5 to poly-conic vase (PVx5). 'Calatina' had the smallest trees in terms of trunk size in all growing systems, while canopy size of trees at higher densities was similar for all three cultivars. 'Calatina' was also the most growth efficient (m3 of canopy per cm2 of TCSA) and produced the least amount of pruning wood in the hedgerow systems (CLx2 and FPx3). Fruit yield per tree tended to be higher in more vigorous cultivars (Abunara and Nocellara) grown to 3D systems (GVx4 and PVx5), while 'Calatina' was the most yield efficient (kg of fruit per cm2 of TCSA) especially in the hedgerow growing systems. Fruit and oil yield per ha and average production value tended to be highest in CLx2 trees and lowest in GVx4 trees, with 'Calatina' showing the sharpest changes and 'Nocellara' the smallest changes among growing systems. According to the Jaen index, CLx2 tended to induce earlier fruit maturation, followed by PVx5, GVx4, and FPx3. The growing system did not affect oil fatty acid composition, while 'Calatina' had the highest amount of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and the lowest amount of saturated fatty acids. 'Abunara' oils exhibited the highest amount of total phenols in CLx2, while 'Calatina' and 'Nocellara' oils exhibited the highest amount in FPx3 and PVx5. Both, trans-2-hexenal ("cut grass" sensory note) and hexenyl acetate ("floral" sensory note) tended to be lowest in oils from trees grown at CLx2 and highest in those from trees grown at GVx4, showing a somewhat inverse relationship with fruit ripening degree. The outcome of the present study on mature pedestrian orchards shows that proper combinations of cultivars, planting densities, and training forms (canopy shape) may result in efficient intensive systems for growing olive in areas where super-high density systems cannot be profitable due to agronomic and environmental limitations (water shortage, steep sloping sites, small farm size, etc.). Pedestrian growing systems can also be used to exploit olive biodiversity by allowing the use of available local genotypes. Datura sp. is a genus of 14 species, poisonous plants belonging to the family Solanaceae. Distributed throughout the world and it is widely cultivated in Asia, America, Europe, South Africa and other tropical and subtropical regions and primarily used as an intoxicant and hallucinogen. Datura stramonium and Datura innoxia two medicinal plant known as Jimson weed and Thorn apple cultivated all over the world for many properties. This study revealed that total phenolic content (196.52 and 183.08 mg GAE g-1), total flavonoid content (16.72 and 17.12 mg QE 100 g-1), total antioxidant activity (91.74 and 88.97µmol TE g-1) and nutritional element content (Mg, K, Ca, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, As, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb) of two different medicinal plant species Datura stramonium and Datura innoxia. Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) is an edible plant with a high content of healthy minerals and ingredients beneficial to human health. The presented study aimed to summarize the key findings in terms of phytoremediation capabilities and nutritional values of the ice plant. A rigorous scientometric review technique and Tree of Science heuristic analyses helped compile all those findings. The scientometric review used various databases (Scopus and Science Direct) following the PIO (Population, Intervention, and Outputs) strategy, which helped to formulate the search equations and identify the most relevant articles published in the last two decades. According to scientometric mapping, the scholarly work on M. crystallinum enhanced by 12.65% between 2006 and 2023, focusing on its phytoremediation potential, salt adaptability, antioxidant capacity, and phenolic compounds. The present findings emphasized more investigation regarding its potential uses in the food sector, namely, its phytoremediation capacities for cleaning up contaminated water and soil. Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) is an important food crop source of nutrients and bioactive compounds. Different species of amaranth showed considerable phenotypic variations and could possess diverse nutritional properties. The presented study strove to determine the diversity of amaranth collection for morphological and biochemical traits and their antioxidant potential for developing new cultivars adapted to the environmental conditions of Central Russia. The selected 16 amaranth accessions had high variability in morphological and biochemical traits. With red-colored leaves, amaranthine content ranged from 0.319a to 2.031f mg/g fresh weight (FW). The water-soluble antioxidant content ranged from 0.425a to 1.439h mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g FW. In amaranth accessions, the phenolic compound content in leaves varied from 2.700a to 4.825g mg GAE/g FW. In the amaranth collection, the total chlorophyll content ranged from 0.9946a to 3.5467j mg/g, and carotenoids from 0.2196a to 0.8289i mg/g. A strong positive correlation (P ≤ 0.05) was evident between total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents (r≈0.90), plant height and inflorescence length (r≈0.79), and inflorescence length and seed weight harvested per plant (r≈0.76). In summary, when evaluating the antioxidant levels in various samples, the Valentina cultivar, characterized by red leaves, appeared to have the highest amaranthine concentration. Both Valentina and Fakel cultivars exhibited the maximum overall antioxidant capacity. Additionally, the Valentina and Duimovochka cultivars emerged as the top accumulators of polyphenols. This study investigated phenolic compounds (PC), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total carbon organic total (TOC) removal from olive mill wastewater OMW via activated persulfate oxidation. A mathematical model was developed, and the process variables, namely oxidant dose (0.05 and 0.1 g L−1), type of catalyst (Fe2+, Cu2+), time of treatment (5 and 20 min) and temperature (25 and 45 °C) and their interaction were examined using a full factorial design methodology 24. The results indicated that activation methods are efficient for reduction of PC and COD in OMW. Under conditions maximizing responses, there was a considerable increase in PC, COD and TOC removal (44.73 %, 62.39 % and 95.13 % respectively). The correlation coefficient values of the polynomial model were found to be 90 % (CP removal) and 86 % (COD removal). BACKGROUND: Phenols and parabens are two classes of high production volume chemicals that are used widely in consumer and personal care products and have been associated with reproductive harm and pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. However, studies examining their influence on maternal blood pressure and gestational hypertension are limited. OBJECTIVES: We investigated associations between individual phenols, parabens, and their mixture on maternal blood pressure measurements, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) and hypertension during pregnancy (defined as stage 1 or 2 hypertension), among 푁 = 1,433 Puerto Rico PROTECT study participants. METHODS: We examined these relationships cross-sectionally at two time points during pregnancy (16–20 and 24–28 wks gestation) and longitudinally using linear mixed models (LMMs). Finally, we used quantile g-computation to examine the mixture effect on continuous (SBP, DBP) and binary (hypertension during pregnancy) blood pressure outcomes. RESULTS: We observed a trend of higher odds of hypertension during pregnancy with exposure to multiple analytes and the overall mixture [including bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), triclocarbon (TCC), triclosan (TCS), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP), methyl paraben (M-PB), propyl paraben (P-PB), butyl paraben (B-PB), and ethyl paraben (E-PB)], especially at 24-28 wk gestation, with an adjusted mixture odds?ratio(OR)=1.57 (95% CI: 1.03, 2.38). Lower SBP and higher DBP were also associated with individual analytes, with results from LMMs most consistent for methyl paraben (M-PB) or propyl paraben (P-PB) and increased DBP across pregnancy [adjusted M-PB β=0.78 (95% CI: 0.17, 1.38) and adjusted P-PB β=0.85 (95% CI: 0.19, 1.51)] and for BPA, which was associated with decreased SBP (adjusted β=-0.57; 95% CI: -1.09, -0.05). Consistent with other literature, we also found evidence of effect modification by fetal sex, with a strong inverse association observed between the overall exposure mixture and SBP at visit 1 among participants carrying female fetuses only. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that phenol and paraben exposure may collectively increase the risk of stage 1 or 2 hypertension during pregnancy, which has important implications for fetal and maternal health. Black glutinous rice flour (BGRF) had the potential to be used as a wheat substitute to increase the health-promoting nutritional value of pasta products. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of using BGRF as an alternative to wheat flour in the production of pasta to improve its nutritional value. The research explored the physical, chemical, sensory properties, and consumer acceptance of pasta formulations with 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% BGRF substitution. The findings revealed that pigmentation of BGRF contributed to increased phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties, which impacted physical and chemical properties of the pasta. The results indicated that a 40% substitution of BGRF was well-liked by consumers, while a 60% substitution led to decreased acceptance. The physical properties of uncooked pasta (UC-PAS) and cooked pasta (CK-PAS), such as moisture content and color values, were significantly influenced by the percentage of BGRF substitution. Specifically, the moisture content of UC-PAS decreased with higher BGRF substitution, resulting in changes in color values. These changes included an increase in redness, as well as a decrease in lightness and yellowness. Additionally, the pigmentation of BGRF contributed to increased phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties, which affected physical and chemical properties of the pasta. The pasta’s cooking quality, including cooking time (CKT), cooking loss (CKL), and cooking yield (CKY), also showed significant differences with varying percentages of BGRF substitution. Furthermore, the proximate composition indicated that the percentages of ash, protein, fat, and fiber increased as the proportion of BGRF increased, with pasta containing 60% BGRF demonstrating the highest values for these properties. All these findings provide evidence that BGRF substitution had a significant positive impact on the physical, chemical, and sensory properties of pasta. For example, the pasta had better antioxidant properties and was well-accepted by consumers. Wine′s phenolic compounds present a group of hundreds of chemical compounds, contributing to the wine taste, color, and stability during the ageing. These compounds include phenolic acids, flavonols, anthocyanins, catechins, proanthocyanidins etc. They are very important because they offer numerous good benefits for human body. Electrochemical methods show a valuable technique for the determination of redox compounds in wine. In this review, a lot of attention is paid to carbon‐based electrodes and to the voltammetric signals obtained in red and white wines using different modifiers for the electrode surface with nanoparticles and natural compounds used in the construction of biosensors. These electrodes are widely used due to their non‐toxic properties, wide potential ranges, high conductivity and the possibility of use in aqueous and non‐aqueous solutions. Different carbon electrodes are considered and briefly discussed. This review explores the current advancements in the electrochemical determination of most important polyphenolic compounds in wine using carbon electrodes. Also, this review gives a clear view about the oxidation peaks of various phenolic compounds in wine. It encompasses ‐the in‐depth analysis of the different types of carbon electrodes used, such as glassy carbon, carbon paste, carbon nanotubes, screen‐printed,graphene‐based electrodes, biosensors and their respective benefits in polyphenolic compounds analysis. In conclusion, the electrochemical determination of polyphenolic compounds in wine using carbon electrodes offers a promising route for accurate and reliable analysis, with important implications for the wine industry and research. Plants employ diverse anti-herbivore defences that can covary to form syndromes consisting of multiple traits. Such syndromes are hypothesized to impact herbivores more than individual defences. We studied 16 species of lowland willows occurring in central Europe and explored if their chemical and physical traits form detectable syndromes. We tested for phylogenetic trends in the syndromes and explored whether three herbivore guilds (i.e., generalist leaf-chewers, specialist leaf-chewers, and gallers) are affected more by the detected syndromes or individual traits. The recovered syndromes showed low phylogenetic signal and were mainly defined by investment in concentration, richness, or uniqueness of structurally related phenolic metabolites. Resource acquisition traits or inducible volatile organic compounds exhibited a limited correlation with the syndromes. Individual traits composing the syndromes showed various correlations to the assemblages of herbivores from the three studied guilds. In turn, we found some support for the hypothesis that defence syndromes are composed of traits that provide defence against various herbivores. However, individual traits rather than trait syndromes explained more variation for all studied herbivore assemblages. The detected negative correlations between various phenolics suggest that investment trade-offs may occur primarily among plant metabolites with shared metabolic pathways that may compete for their precursors. Moreover, several traits characterizing the recovered syndromes play additional roles in willows other than defence from herbivory. The species of the brown macroalgal genus Sargassum are distributed globally and contain many bioactive compounds. In this study, ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) was applied to obtain phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity from Sargassum carpophyllum collected along the coastline of Weizhou Island in the South China Sea. The influence of different variables such as the solid–liquid ratio (1:5–1:30 g · mL−1), ultrasonic power (160–280 W), duty circle ratio (DCR, 1/3–1/1), and ethanol concentration (30% to ~90%) were studied using a single factor design. The extraction kinetics were investigated using the Peleg model and second‐order kinetics model, and the second‐order model described the extraction procedure better than the Peleg model. Total phenol content (TPC) values of 3.316, 2.964, 2.741, and 3.665 mg phloroglucinol (PHG) · g−1 algae were achieved at a higher solid–liquid ratio (1:30 g · mL−1), higher ultrasonic power (280 W), a higher DCR (1/1), and a moderate ethanol concentration (50%), respectively. However, a slightly different result was observed in the extract obtained, with total phenol contents (TPCextract) of 52.99, 65.00, 46.22, and 55.10 mg PHG · g−1 extract and DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50) of 0.096, 0.066, 0.131, and 0.136 mg extract · mL−1 observed at 50% ethanol, 1:5 g m· mL−1, 2/3 DCR, and 200 W respectively. All variables studied influenced the extraction kinetics by altering the extraction rate and the TPC at equilibrium. As for the bioactivities in the extract, a larger solid–liquid ratio and greater ultrasonic power may not contribute because of their ability to extract non‐phenolic components simultaneously, leading to reduced overall bioactivities. The results of the present study provide essential information for future UAE process design and optimization for extracting phenolics from S. carpophyllum through mathematical modeling and could be regarded as important reference for obtaining value‐added products from other macroalgae species. Chronic noncommunicable diseases are a global health problem causing increased rates of mortality and sick leaves, which can be reduced by controlling dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the antidiabetic, lipid-lowering, antiobesogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive properties of cinnamon; therefore, its use in yogurt can help reverse the effects of these diseases. Our study aims to evaluate the effect of a microencapsulated aqueous extract of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) (MCE Cz) incorporated in a yogurt drink on metabolic syndrome (MS) in a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Physicochemical, microbiological, and proximal chemical characterization; total phenol, flavonoid, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil activity quantification; intestinal bioaccessibility; sensory analysis; MS induction through diet; and treatment with 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg of flavonoids contained in the MCE Cz were performed to help evaluate morphological, biochemical, and lipid peroxidation measurements in the liver and heart. The results show that the addition of MCE Cz in the yogurt modified the yogurt texture, increased its adhesiveness and firmness, and imparted a characteristic cinnamon color and biological value by providing intestinally bioaccessible antioxidants with antioxidant potential by reducing lipoperoxidation in the liver and heart after treatment. MCE Cz reduced the weight of the animals by up to 38.5% and the abdominal circumference by 29%. Biochemically, it decreased glucose levels by 24.38%, total cholesterol levels by 69.2%, triglyceride levels by 72.69%, and low-density lipoprotein levels by 89.25%; it increased high-density lipoprotein levels by 67.08%. Therefore, adding MCE Cz in doses of 5 and 10 mg of flavonoids in drinkable yogurt can be an alternative to preparing functional foods with physicochemical attributes and biological properties that can be consumed at all stages of life without undesirable effects. This study aimed to investigate the bisphenol A (BPA) release from four CAD/CAM splint materials: three polycarbonate‐based (DD BioSplint C, Splint Plus Biostar, Temp Premium Flexible) and one polymethylmethacrylate‐based (Temp Basic) material. From each material, ten cylindrical samples (n = 40) were immersed in high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade water following ISO 10993‐12 and incubated for 24 h in an incubation shaker at 37°C and 112 rpm. Following BPA derivatization, analysis was performed by high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐MS/MS). After 24 h of incubation, all investigated materials released significant amounts of BPA compared to water blanks. The material‐dependent elution increased in the following order: DD BioSplint C < Splint Plus Biostar < Temp Basic < Temp Premium Flexible. Subtracting extraneous BPA, the concentrations ranged between 2.27 ng/mL and 12.65 ng/mL. After extrapolating the concentrations in relation to the average surface area of occlusal splints, the amount of BPA per mL exceeded the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) set by the European Union for a person weighing 70 kg by 1.32–6.16 times. Contrary to the release from previously investigated materials, BPA elution from CAD/CAM splint materials was highly elevated. The present study aimed at characterizing the phenolic composition of the aqueous extract from Anabasis articulata and its biological properties, in terms of in vitro antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects. The phytocomplex was investigated by HPLC-DAD analysis, whereas total phenolics, tannins and flavonoids using spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant property of the extract was determined applying four assays (i.e. total antioxidant capacity, reducing power, DPPH, and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching). The enzymatic inhibitory function was evaluated against tyrosinase and acetylcholinesterase, whereas toxicological and anti-inflammatory aspects through in vivo evaluations. More in detail, twenty-one specific phenolic compounds were successfully detected, identified, and quantified in the plant extract, which showed considerable antioxidant potential. The aqueous preparation also revealed a high anti-tyrosinase and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity. In particular, an in-silico prediction analysis, by molecular docking approach, was performed to understand which plant metabolite from A. articulata could be potentially responsible for acetylcholinesterase inhibition, favoring the identification of putative new compounds useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Alyssum genus has many ethnobotanical uses due to the bioactive compounds it contains (glucosinolates, hydrocarbons, fatty acids and phenolic compounds, etc.). The objective of this study was to assess the total phenolic content, potential bioactive components and cytotoxic effects of ethanol extracts obtained from different parts (root, stem and leaf) of Alyssum floribundum. The Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method was utilized to measure the total phenolic content of all extracts. The total phenolic content of different parts A. floribundum were 12.6 ± 02, 8.2 ± 1.2 and 4.9 ± 0.8 mg GAE/g, respectively. The bioactive compounds of different parts A. floribundum were shown by employing gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and were identified to contain 30 different chemical components in all parts of the plant. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated using the xCELLigence method on the DU-145 prostate cancer cell line. The root, stem and leaf extracts of A. floribundum displayed the strongest cytotoxicity against the DU-145 prostate cancer cell act in a dose-dependent manner after 24 and 48 h with IC50 values of various concentrations after 24 and 48 h were calculated and determined as 192.1–157.4 µg/mL, 29.12–26.93 µg/mL and 226.4–80.23 µg/mL, respectively. Cadmium (Cd2+) is a toxic heavy metal that is widespread throughout the environment. It is a subject of interest to environmental scientists because of its toxicity to plants, animals, and humans. The current work aims to evaluate the effects of Cd2+ on the production of phenolic compounds and morphological, physiological and biochemical responses of Lupinus albus L. plants exposed to Cd2+ at 0, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 150 μM CdCl2 for 7 days. Cd2+ induced negative effect on growth especially at the dose of 150 µM. Cd2+ also induced chlorosis and reduced photosynthetic activity. Besides, the metal increased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA). Under Cd2+ toxicity (50, 100, and 150 µM), the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were increased or not significantly affected, while at 150 µM Cd2+ affected the activity of these enzymes. At the highest Cd2+ level (150 µM), proline and total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were markedly increased in leaves and roots of L. albus. Changes in the content of various phenolic carboxylic acids (PCAs), chlorogenic (ChA), caffeic (CA), ferulic (FA), as well as the amounts of flavonoids and spare carbohydrates (monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and starch) in the tissues of Acer tataricum and Acer negundo seed embryos (indigenous and invasive species, respectively) during their storage were studied from October to March (cold chamber, T 5°C, humidity 80%). There was a significant increase in the content of ChA and the absence of CA in December–January in an aboriginal species with a long dormant period. In the invasive species A. negundo, which does not have a rest period, the level of ChA also increased, but was ten times lower than in A. tataricum, while a high level of CA was identified. In terms of flavonoid content, the native species A. tataricum is ten times superior to the invasive A. negundo. The carbohydrate content in A. tataricum was about 40%, and in the tissues of A. negundo seed embryos about 15% and did not change during the entire storage period. The dynamics of the content of phenolic compounds and forms of spare carbohydrates, their relationship with the activation of metabolic processes and protective anti-stress mechanisms during the cold storage of seeds, and competitiveness in biocenoses are discussed. Pseudodictamnus africanus (L.) Salmaki & Siadati [previously called Ballota africana (L.) Benth.] is a well-known Cape traditional medicine in many parts of the Cape region of South Africa. Known as kattekruid , it is used to treat various ailments, including respiratory infections, pain and inflammation. To date, only a single chemical compound, hispanolone, has been identified in the species. This study reports for the first time the major volatile and non-volatile compounds of kattekruid. Using GC–MS, 52 compounds could be identified in 12 samples of essential oil, of which viridiflorol (14.22 %), β-caryophyllene (7.65 %), and caryophyllene oxide (7.41 %) were consistently present as major compounds. Using multivariate statistics, chemophenetic variation was observed amongst the 12 samples collected from four populations used in the study. For example, one population has β-bisabolene (13.09 %) as a major compound, whereas another exhibited germacrene-D (6.87 %) and sesquiabene hydrate (5.30 %). Non-volatile constituents separated using LC–MS, were tentatively identified as (3) forsythoside B, (4) verbascoside/acetoside, (5) isoverbascoside, (12) ballotenol, (13) ballotenic acid and (25) hispanolone. This exploratory study provides the foundation for further, in-depth studies on chemical variation in the species. The reported anti-inflammatory activity of some of the major volatile and non-volatile compounds provides a potential rationale for the traditional medicinal uses that have been recorded. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of methyl jasmonate (MJ) in mitigating the negative effects of salt stress on purple basil. For this, plants were grown in an entirely randomized design in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme (salinity × MJ treatments), and seven replicates. Salinity levels corresponded to non-stress (irrigation water without NaCl addition), mild stress (40 mM NaCl), and severe stress (80 mM NaCl), and MJ treatments corresponded to control (0 µM – water) or 1 mM solutions, applied as leaf sprays. The growth, physiology, and post-harvest attributes of purple basil were determined. Salt stress impaired growth, photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll content, and relative water content, while it increased electrolyte leakage (P ≤ 0.05). However, the application of exogenous methyl jasmonate (MJ) mitigated the effects of salt stress on growth and gas exchange in purple basil. MJ also increased chlorophyll and relative water content while decreasing electrolyte leakage. Mild and severe salt stress differentially impacted chlorophyll fluorescence, while methyl jasmonate (MJ) partially mitigated these effects. Salt stress also reduced the contents of anthocyanins, sugars, and phenolic compounds, whereas MJ increased their levels under both non-stressed and salt-stressed conditions. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors are effective therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, and natural flavonoids found in the species Agastache belong to them. In the present study, six new acylated flavone-O-glycosides were isolated from A. foeniculum and identified using UV, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry as agastoside A (acacetin 7-O-(2′′-O-malonyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside), B (acacetin 7-O-(4′′-O-malonyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside), C (acacetin 7-O-(2′′,6′′-di-O-malonyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside), D (acacetin 7-O-(4′′,6′′-di-O-malonyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside), E (acacetin 7-O-(2′′-O-malonyl-6′′-O-acetyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside), and F (acacetin 7-O-(4′′-O-acetyl-6′′-O-malonyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside). Using flash chromatography and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, an additional 34 known phenolic compounds were detected. A study of biological activity showed that A. foeniculum flavonoids had an inhibitory effect on MAO-A and MAO-B, with the greatest effect noted for acacetin 7-O-glucoside acetate and malonate esters, which may be promising compounds for the development new drugs. Dragon fruits have abundant nutritional and antioxidant properties. High temperatures limit the growth and production of dragon fruits. Hemin can effectively alleviate abiotic stress in plants. However, the regulatory effect of Hemin on dragon fruit under heat stress remains unclear. In this study, we explored the impacts of foliar application of Hemin on dragon fruit size, yield and quality during the high temperatures of the summer season. In this experiment, dragon fruit variety 'Jindu No. 1' was used as material and treated with three Hemin concentrations, i.e., H1: 1 μmol.L−1, H2: 10 μmol.L−1, H3: 100 μmol.L−1, compared with CK: control. The results show that exogenous Hemin increased the single fruit weight, yield, fruit shape index and edible rate. It also improved pericarp L* value, a* value, C* and decreased ho, improving the peel colour; exogenous Hemin enhanced soluble solids content and phenolic compounds content and antioxidant enzyme activities in the pulp of dragon fruit. In addition, exogenous Hemin increased the content of chlorophyll content in dragon fruit stems. Differential metabolites determined by metabolomic assay also indicated that Hemin significantly increased the content of active substances such as selagin. Additionally, the Hemin treatment H2 also activated the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), which helps to mitigate the effects of high temperatures on dragon fruit. The current findings strongly advocate that H2 treatment may effectively counteract the adverse effects of heat stress by regulating the morph-physiological and antioxidant traits. Despite the wealth of studies on benzothiadiazole (BTH) and its capacity to modulate grape polyphenol metabolism, comprehensive data detailing polyphenol accumulation at various grape growth stages remain scarce. Therefore, the present study utilized pre-harvest (at 21 days after flowering) canopy-applied BTH (50 mg/L) on Cabernet Gernischt and Cabernet Franc grapes to investigate the physicochemical and polyphenolic changes during grape maturation. The results showed that BTH treatment significantly affected the accumulation of total phenols, flavonoids, flavanols, anthocyanins, and tannins. Concurrently, it induced an increase in colorimetric parameters (CIRG, L*, b*, a*, and C*ab), resulting in the treated grapes exhibiting a greater color intensity and enhanced red-bluish colorimetric characteristics. Moreover, the BTH treatment amplified the anthocyanin content in the grapes, with the levels of petunidin-3-O-glucoside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside exhibiting remarkable increases, particularly in the Cabernet Franc grape. Notably, the content of peonidin-3-O-glucoside even surpassed that of malvidin-3-O-glucoside throughout the growth stages, indicating significant advantages in the treated samples. Additionally, the levels of flavanol, flavonols, phenolic acids, and stilbenes experienced a significant boost post-treatment. In conclusion, the application of BTH treatment can effectively enhance the accumulation of polyphenols and intensify the color of Cabernet Gernischt and Cabernet Franc grapes, thereby significantly improving the overall quality of wine grapes and ensuring the production of higher-quality wines. In modern horticulture, biostimulants can be an effective alternative to traditional, industrial means of production. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of three biostimulants (Calgreen, Erathis, Greit VG) containing selected macronutrients (N, Ca), organic matter, and amino acids on the yield and quality of strawberries and their content of health-beneficial substances. In the comparative variant, the plants were treated with mineral fertilisers applied into the soil. In 2021, an experiment was conducted on a two-year-old strawberry plantation of the 'Rumba' cultivar located on a horticultural farm in northwestern Poland. The following parameters were assessed: the yield, weight, and firmness of fruits as well as their content of soluble substances, sugars, organic acids, phenolic compounds, and anthocyanins. The use of biostimulants caused a decrease in soil acidity and salinity. In comparison with the soil fertilisation variant, the number of flowers and fruits on the plants increased by 50% to over 100%, which translated into a significant increase in the yield. The fruits from the plants treated with the biostimulants several times were of better quality. Their average weight, firmness, and the content of soluble substances (also after being stored for several days) increased significantly. Recent studies have focused on using big-data-based machine learning to address the effects of climate change scenarios on the production and quality of medicinal plants. Challenges relating to data collection can hinder the analysis of key feature variables that affect the quality of medicinal plants. In the study presented herein, we analyzed feature variables that affect the phenolic content of Korean Cnidium officinale Makino (C. officinale Makino) under different climate change scenarios. We applied different climate change scenarios based on environmental information obtained from Yeongju city, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, and cultivated C. officinale Makino to collect data. The collected data included 3237, 75, and 45 records, and data augmentation was performed to address this data imbalance. We designed a function based on the DPPH value to set the phenolic content grade in C. officinale Makino and proposed a stacking ensemble model for predicting the total phenol contents and classifying the phenolic content grades. The regression model in the performance evaluation presented an improvement of 6.23–7.72% in terms of the MAPE; in comparison, the classification model demonstrated a 2.48–3.34% better performance in terms of accuracy. The classification accuracy was >0.825 when classifying phenol content grades using the predicted total phenol content values from the regression model, and the area under the curve values of the model indicated high model fitness (0.987–0.981). In plants, salicylic acid (SA) hydroxylation regulates SA homoeostasis, playing an essential role during plant development and response to pathogens. This reaction is catalysed by SA hydroxylase enzymes, which hydroxylate SA producing 2,3‐dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3‐DHBA) and/or 2,5‐dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,5‐DHBA). Several SA hydroxylases have recently been identified and characterised from different plant species, but no such activity has yet been reported in maize. In this work, we describe the identification and characterisation of a new SA hydroxylase in maize plants. This enzyme, with high sequence similarity to previously described SA hydroxylases from Arabidopsis and rice, converts SA into 2,5‐DHBA; however, it has different kinetic properties to those of previously characterised enzymes, and it also catalysers the conversion of the flavonoid dihydroquercetin into quercetin in in vitro activity assays, suggesting that the maize enzyme may have different roles in vivo to those previously reported from other species. Despite this, ZmS5H can complement the pathogen resistance and the early senescence phenotypes of Arabidopsis s3h mutant plants. Finally, we characterised a maize mutant in the S5H gene (s5hMu) that has altered growth, senescence and increased resistance against Colletotrichum graminicola infection, showing not only alterations in SA and 2,5‐DHBA but also in flavonol levels. Together, the results presented here provide evidence that SA hydroxylases in different plant species have evolved to show differences in catalytic properties that may be important to fine tune SA levels and other phenolic compounds such as flavonols, to regulate different aspects of plant development and pathogen defence. Additionally, it is rich in vitamins and bioactive compounds, which offer potential health benefits. These bioactive compounds, such as ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, have demonstrated antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in both in vitro and in vivo studies. This review consolidates recent research on uvaia, focusing on its chemical composition, biological activities, and potential applications within the food industry. Summary: In the present study, the effect of microwave roasting on the total phenolic quantities, antioxidant activities, phenolic constituents, fatty acids and tocopherol amounts of the pistachio kernel and oil was revealed. The moisture, oil, total phenolic amounts and antioxidant capacity value of raw and roasted pistachio nuts were assessed as 31.13%, 28.58%, 34.79 mgGAE/100 g and 0.75%–3.18%, 56.91%, 18.80 mgGAE/100 g and 2.26%, respectively. The raw pistachio nut contains 1.90 gallic acid, 0.22 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.87 (+)‐catechin, 0.15 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.15 rutin trihydrate, 0.16 resveratrol, 0.1 quercetin, 0.19 kaempferol and 0.24 mg/100 g isorhamnetin. In addition, microwave‐roasted nuts contained 0.75 gallic acid, 0.62 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.83 (+)‐catechin, 0.47 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.21 syringic acid, 0.17 caffeic acid and 0.17 mg/100 g quercetin. The raw and roasted pistachio nut oils contained 74.12% and 71.16% oleic, 13.76% and 15.23% linoleic, 8.16% and 8.92% palmitic and 2.09% and 2.10% stearic acids, respectively. The oil samples of the raw and roasted kernels contained 8.15 and 0.00 α‐tocopherol, 63.78 and 7.60 β‐tocopherol, 8.72 and 7.40 ɣ‐tocopherol and 5.61 and 6.77 mg g−1 δ‐tocopherols, respectively. The total phenolic quantity of the pistachio kernel roasted by microwave decreased significantly. Phenolic compounds of the pistachio kernel showed partial differences depending on microwave heating. Differences were monitored in the fatty acid profiles of Pistachio kernel oils. β‐tocopherol quantity of the oil of the pistachio kernel heated by microwave significantly decreased. Phenolic compounds are plant secondary metabolites, one of the most common and widespread groups of substances in plants, as well as a major group of phytochemicals present in medicinal and aromatic plants. The phytochemical composition of the hydroalcoholic extracts from S. raeseri, S. scardica and S. syriaca was determined by LC-MS/MS-QTOF analysis. A total amount of 23 secondary metabolites were identified, including 17 flavonoids (Fs), 4 phenylethanoid glycosides (PEGs), 1 phenolic acid (PA) and 1 fatty acid (FA). Among the three species, the constituents that have been detected in all of nine samples were: verbascocide/isoverbascoside (PEG), apigenin 7-O- glucoside (F), isoscutellarein 7-O-[6″-O-acetyl]-allosyl(1→2)-glucoside (F) and apigenin 7-(4″-p-coumaroylglucoside) (F). This study contributes to the phytochemical characterization of the Sideritis spp. by providing a comparative study of bioactive compounds present in three different Sideritis species, S. raeseri, S. scardica and S. syriaca, which are widely used as a herbal medicine in Mediterranean region and Balkan Peninsula. Phyllostachys glauca McClure leaves (PML), as economical natural product material, contain abundant phenols, particularly flavonoids, with significant biological activities that contribute to their widespread applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. To study the significant phenols in PML, an ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent extraction method with high efficiency and low toxicity was established for extracting the phenols from PML and the bamboo leaves of 17 other bamboo species. Using the Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) method, the content of phenols in the leaves of the 18 bamboo species was determined. PML were found to contain neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, isoorientin, and orientin at contents of 0.793 ± 00.17 mg/g, 0.491 ± 0.0081 mg/g, 0.485 ± 0.0043 mg/g, 0.465 ± 0.0021 mg/g, and 0.044 ± 0.0005 mg/g, respectively, with a total content of 2.278 mg/g. These contents were significantly higher than those found in the leaves of 17 other bamboo species. Additionally, the significant phenols, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid were found simultaneously in the leaves of 15 bamboo species, especially in PML. Therefore, PML can be viewed as the natural product material with considerable application values, owing to its abundant phenols, and can exhibit its importance in utilizing neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid as resources. In traditional Chinese medicine, Ganoderma is a kind of edible and medicinal mushroom, which is widely used because of its significant pharmacological activity. There are many species within the Ganoderma genus, each with different material bases and applications. However, detailed studies on these species are still lacking. In this study, we investigated the metabolites of G. leacontextum (B), G. lucidum (C), G. tsugae (S) from Changbai Mountain, and G. tsugae (M) from Mongolia using metabolomics. The PCA results indicated minimal differences between M and S, whereas B and S exhibited significant variations. A total of 708 differential metabolites were identified in this study, with steroids, triterpenoids, phenols, and quinones being the major metabolites. Specifically, triterpenoids and steroids were higher in C. Meanwhile, phenolic compounds were more abundant in B. Additionally, quinones were more abundant in M and S. We validated some of the main compounds, and the results showed that paracetamol was most abundant in B, making paracetamol a potential marker for identifying B. Additionally, vitamin K3 was found to be more abundant in M and S, which can serve as a marker for their identification. This study aimed to provide scientific data on the anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) effects of phenolic compounds from Drynariae Rhizoma (DR) extract using a multi-component approach. Screening of DR extracts, fractions, and the ten phenolic compounds isolated from DR against the key AD-related enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), and monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) confirmed their significant inhibitory activities. The DR extract was confirmed to have BACE1-inhibitory activity, and the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions were found to inhibit all AD-related enzymes, including BACE1, AChE, BChE, and MAO-B. Among the isolated phenolic compounds, compounds (2) caffeic acid 4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, (6) kaempferol 3-O-rhamnoside 7-O-glucoside, (7) kaempferol 3-o-b-d-glucopyranoside-7-o-a-L-arabinofuranoside, (8) neoeriocitrin, (9) naringin, and (10) hesperidin significantly suppressed AD-related enzymes. Notably, compounds 2 and 8 reduced soluble Amyloid Precursor Protein β (sAPPβ) and β-secretase expression by over 45% at a concentration of 1.0 μM. In the thioflavin T assay, compounds 6 and 7 decreased Aβ aggregation by approximately 40% and 80%, respectively, and degraded preformed Aβ aggregates. Lonicera caerulea L. fruits are a rich source of vitamins, organic acids, and phenolic compounds, which are characterised by their health-promoting properties. The content of bioactive compounds in this fruit may vary depending on the cultivar and the harvest date. This study analysed the effect of applying 5 ppm gaseous ozone for 1, 3, and 5 min on the chemical properties of L. kamtschatica varieties and newly created clones of L. emphyllocalyx for three years of cultivation. The fruits harvested from L. emphyllocalyx, depending on the year of harvest, had significantly larger size and weight compared to L. kamtschatica. On average, the acidity of the L. emphyllocalyx clones was 6% higher than other tested varieties. The average content of ascorbic acid was highest in L. emphyllocalyx clone '21-17'—57.80 mg·100 g−1; the year of harvest will significantly affect the content of vitamin C, reaching the highest level in 2022—53.92 mg·100 g−1. The total content of polyphenols was significantly dependent on the year of cultivation; reaching, on average, 54.8% more in 2022 compared to the rest of the years. The total antioxidant value using the FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS methods varied depending on the variety; exposure to ozone significantly increased the antioxidant value in each case. On the basis of the study, both botanical varieties can be used in food processing. Sorghum, a cereal grain rich in nutrients, is a major source of phenolic compounds that can be altered by different processes, thereby modulating their phenolic content and antioxidant properties. Previous studies have characterised phenolic compounds from pigmented and non-pigmented varieties. However, the impact of processing via the cooking and fermentation of these varieties remains unknown. Wholegrain flour samples of Liberty (WhiteLi1 and WhiteLi2), Bazley (RedBa1 and RedBa2), Buster (RedBu1 and RedBu2), Shawaya black (BlackSb), and Shawaya short black 1 (BlackSs) were cooked, fermented, or both then extracted using acidified acetone. The polyphenol profiles were analysed using a UHPLC-Online ABTS and QTOF LC-MS system. The results demonstrated that combining the fermentation and cooking of the BlackSs and BlackSb varieties led to a significant increase (p < 0.05) in total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities, as determined through DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. The 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity of WhiteLi1, BlackSb, RedBu2, and BlackSs increased by 46%, 32%, 25%, and 10%, respectively, post fermentation and cooking. Conversely, fermentation only or cooking generally resulted in lower phenolic content and antioxidant levels than when samples were fully processed compared to raw. Notably, most of the detected antioxidant peaks (53 phenolic compounds) were only detected in fermented and cooked black and red pericarp varieties. The phenolic compounds with the highest antioxidant activities in pigmented sorghum included 3-aminobenzoic acid, 4-acetylburtyic acid, malic acid, caffeic acid, and luteolin derivative. Furthermore, the growing location of Bellata, NSW, showed more detectable phenolic compounds following processing compared to Croppa Creek, NSW. This study demonstrates that sorghum processing releases previously inaccessible polyphenols, making them available for human consumption and potentially providing added health-promoting properties. Research studies on plant secondary metabolites have increased over the last decades as a consequence of the growing consumer demand for natural products in pharmaceutics and therapeutics, as well as in perfumery and cosmetics. In this perspective, many Mediterranean plant species could be an appreciated source of bioactive compounds with pharmacological and health-promoting properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor ones. Calendula officinalis and Foeniculum vulgare are commercially important plants of the Mediterranean flora, with great therapeutic use in the treatment of many disorders since ancient times, and are now listed in several world pharmacopoeias and drug agencies. The present review offers an overview of the main phytochemicals, phenols, terpenes, and alkaloids, biosynthesized in C. officinalis and F. vulgare, both species endemic to the Mediterranean region. Further, all current knowledge and scientific data on taxonomic classification, botanical description, traditional uses, pharmacological studies, and potential toxicity of both species were reported. The principal aim of this review is to point out the prospective use of C. officinalis and F. vulgare as valuable reservoirs of beneficial plant-derived products with interesting biological properties, also providing suggestions and future challenges for the full exploitation of these two Mediterranean species for human life improvement. Fabiana punensis S. C. Arroyo is a subshrub or shrub that is indigenous to the arid and semiarid region of northern Argentina and is known to possess several medicinal properties. The objective of this study was to optimize the extraction conditions so as to maximize the yield of bioactive total phenolic compound (TPC) and flavonoids (F) of F. punensis' aerial parts by using non-conventional extraction methods, namely ultrasound-assisted extraction, UAE, and microwave-assisted extraction, MAE, and to compare the biological activities and toxicity of optimized extracts vs. conventional extracts, i.e., those gained by maceration. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to apply factorial designs to optimize the parameters of extraction: solid-to-liquid ratio, extraction time, ultrasound amplitude, and microwave power. The experimental values for TPC and F and antioxidant activity under the optimal extraction conditions were not significantly different from the predicted values, demonstrating the accuracy of the mathematical models. Similar HPLC-DAD patterns were found between conventional and UAE- and MAE-optimized extracts. The main constituents of the extracts correspond to phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids) and apigenin was identified. All extracts showed high scavenger capacity on ABTS•+, O2•− and H2O2, enabling the inhibition of the pro-inflammatory enzymes xanthine oxidase (XO) and lipoxygenase (LOX). They also showed an antimutagenic effect in Salmonella Typhimurium assay and cytotoxic/anti-proliferative activity on human melanoma cells (SKMEL-28). Toxicological evaluation indicates its safety. The results of this work are important in the development of efficient and sustainable methods for obtaining bioactive compounds from F. punensis for the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage.
