Hemolymphangioma is a benign malformation of the lymphatic vessels. Cervical localisation is the most frequent. Mediastinal localisation is rare, but may be life-threatening because of airway compression. We report on a four-month-old boy who presented, in a context of epidemics, with clinical signs of acute bronchiolitis requiring mechanical ventilation for several days. Chest X-rays showed an important mediastinal mass with airways compression. Diagnosis was evoked on CT-scan aspects and confirmed by histology. Surgery allowed complete resolution, but dysphonia and oropharyngeal disorders persisted for several months. This rare congenital malformation is reviewed.

To determine if teaching hospital imaging units are adequately staffed: how are the medical activities of radiologists distributed in such units?A questionnaire was sent to all teaching hospital radiologists in June 2001. The questionnaire covered 7 areasUrgent cases represent, on average, 22% of patients. Imaging procedures are becoming more frequent (increase of 2 to 8% per year). The mean working week (excluding periods on duty and on call) is 48 hours per FTE radiologist. The mean time spent on teaching, expertise and organization is 10 hours per week. The mean working time per FTE radiologist is thus 58 h/week. The medical activity per FTE radiologist represents 530.240e.The workload of radiologists in teaching hospitals is extremely high, whatever the indicator used (time or activity), indicating major under-staffing.

- Abstract
In this study, we report on the performance of satellite-based photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) algorithms used in published oceanic primary production models. The performance of these algorithms was evaluated using buoy observations under clear and cloudy skies, and for the particular case of low sun angles typically encountered at high latitudes or at moderate latitudes in winter. The PAR models consisted of (i) the standard one from the NASA-Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG), (ii) the Gregg and Carder (GC) semi-analytical clear-sky model, and (iii) look-up-tables based on the Santa Barbara DISORT atmospheric radiative transfer (SBDART) model. Various combinations of atmospheric inputs, empirical cloud corrections, and semi-analytical irradiance models yielded a total of 13 (11 + 2 developed in this study) different PAR products, which were compared with in situ measurements collected at high frequency (15 min) at a buoy site in the Mediterranean Sea (the “BOUée pour l’acquiSition d’une Série Optique à Long termE,” or, “BOUSSOLE” site). An objective ranking method applied to the algorithm results indicated that seven PAR products out of 13 were well in agreement with the in situ measurements. Specifically, the OBPG method showed the best overall performance with a root mean square difference (RMSD) (bias) of 19.7% (6.6%) and 10% (6.3%) followed by the look-up-table method with a RMSD (bias) of 25.5% (6.8%) and 9.6% (2.6%) at daily and monthly scales, respectively. Among the four methods based on clear-sky PAR empirically corrected for cloud cover, the Dobson and Smith method consistently underestimated daily PAR while the Budyko formulation overestimated daily PAR. Empirically cloud-corrected methods using cloud fraction (CF) performed better under quasi-clear skies (CF<0.3) with an RMSD (bias) of 9.7%–14.8% (3.6%–11.3%) than under partially clear to cloudy skies (0.3
0.7), however, all methods showed larger RMSD differences (biases) ranging between 32% and 80.6% (−54.5%−8.7%). Finally, three methods tested for low sun elevations revealed systematic overestimation, and one method showed a systematic underestimation of daily PAR, with relative RMSDs as large as 50% under all sky conditions. Under partially clear to overcast conditions all the methods underestimated PAR. Model uncertainties predominantly depend on which cloud products were used. - Published

To standardize the ultrasound evaluation in congenital hip dysplasia according to the consensus meeting of 1991 in Paris. Detection of congenital anomalies is a daily pediatric challenge. The coronal plane at US of the hip is considered as the gold standard: its technique, its morphologic and dynamic results either normal or pathological, have been described. A standardized report and a simple terminology are proposed. 2. To explain the role of ultrasound, when performed in close collaboration with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, for initial diagnosis and follow-up of anatomical anomalies. The role of arthrography and MR imaging will be discussed. 3. To describe the benefit of the ultrasound in cases of painful hip in children, including osteoarthritis, acute synovitis, osteochondritis. . . In these cases, the assessment of the hip is also done with radiographs, computer tomography, MR imaging and bone scan.

The objective of our study was to assess the rate of abnormal radiographic findings in the most frequent osteoarticular locations of traumatic injury in a pediatric population.During two periods of 12 weeks each, all patients admitted to the pediatric emergency department for osteoarticular trauma who underwent radiography were prospectively included in this study. A connection was drawn between the rate of abnormal radiographic findings for the seven most frequently radiographed locations and the clinical findings.Of 3128 locations of trauma in 2470 children, only 22% of the radiographic examinations were considered to reveal abnormal findings. In decreasing order, the hand and fingers, the ankle, the wrist, the knee, the elbow, the foot and toes, and the forearm were the most frequently examined locations. The rate of abnormal findings was 25.7% for the hand and fingers, 9.0% for the ankle, 42.5% for the wrist, 9.5% for the knee, 33.3% for the elbow, 18.3% for the foot, and 43.2% for the forearm. When only the direct sign of fracture was taken into account, these rates decreased for the ankle and knee to 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively. There was always a significant link between the degree of clinical suspicion and the rate of abnormal radiographic findings. However, fewer than 50% of the cases with high clinical suspicion of fracture were radiographically confirmed. It appears necessary, especially in cases of lower limb trauma, to evaluate clinical tests, including the implementation of the Ottawa ankle rules, to reduce the number of unnecessary radiographic examinations. This reduction will improve some parameters of children's quality of life and will significantly decrease the cost of emergency care.

Renal US was prospectively performed in 124 madagascan children less than 1 year of age. Patients were examined in the prone position and maximum kidney length was measured in the longitudinal plane. These measurements and the height and weight of our patient population were compared to published tables. Kidney length and height and weight of our patient population were inferior to the previously published reference data and the growth curve of kidneys steeper than normative standards (p0.001). Because of the important variability in US measurement of kidney length it is not possible to definitely conclude that length and growth curve of kidneys in madagascan children are statistically different from those of the published normative standards.

Objective. To describe the imaging findings of vascularized fibular grafts (VFG) in large bone reconstruction in children and teenagers. Design and patients. Fifteen patients aged from 4 to 19 years underwent VFG for bone reconstruction for primary tumors involving bone in 13 cases and for chronic osteomyelitis in 2 cases. Lesions were located in the femur (6 cases), the tibia (6 cases), the humerus, the distal fibula and the ilium. Radiographic follow-up was performed in all patients, radionuclide studies in 12 patients and MRI in 8. Results. Plain films showed a lamellated periosteal reaction on the VFG within 3 weeks following the procedure in all cases. Fusion of VFG and host bone occurred during the first 3 months. Radionuclide uptake of the VFG was seen in all cases but one. MRI showed cortical thickening and conservation of the high signal intensity of fatty marrow on T1-weighted sequences, and periosteal enhancement on dynamic post-contrast studies in all but one of the patients. Conclusion. Radionuclide studies and MRI show the periosteal enhancement and assess the viability of the VFG satisfactorily. However, we feel that plain films may be sufficient to ascertain this viability.

Pulmonary blastoma is a rare malignant tumor. A new case is reported in a 3 years 6 month-old girl. An apparent clinical remission was first obtained after a surgical treatment followed by a conventional chemotherapy during six months. Afterwards the persistence of a microscopic residual pulmonary disease lead us to deliver successfully an intensive chemotherapy followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cells reinjection. The child remains disease free 12 months after graft. Problems set by the histogenesis of this tumor, its unspecific clinical and paraclinical features and the role of conventional and intensive chemotherapy followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation are discussed on the basis of a review of 50 cases in the literature.

Recent reports indicate that, compared with MR imaging, plain film radiography often underestimates the extent of injury in children with physeal fracture-separation. Such underestimation may have significant therapeutic and prognostic outcomes. We performed this study to assess the benefit of MR imaging compared with plain film radiography in the diagnosis and immediate treatment of acute fractures of the distal tibial physis.Twenty-nine patients with acute fractures, including 15 Salter-Harris II, four Salter-Harris III, four Salter-Harris IV, and six triplane fractures, were prospectively examined by MR imaging with gradient-echo sequences. The MR images were compared with plain film radiographs. All cases were reviewed in a blind fashion by two experienced radiologists to determine the Salter-Harris classification on the basis of first plain film radiographs and then MR images. Two experienced pediatric surgeons were asked to propose treatment on the basis of first plain film radiographs and then MR images. Both the radiologists and the surgeons were asked to rate the two techniques in terms of degree of confidence and overall diagnostic effectiveness.Only 1 or 29 fractures (3%) was misclassified by plain film radiography. MR imaging never caused the treatment plan to be modified. However, the position of fracture fragments in Salter-Harris IV and triplane fractures was always better appreciated on MR images, facilitating more accurate surgical treatment. Except for those in the misclassified fracture, all other fracture lines were seen on both plain film radiographs and MR images but were more easily seen on MR images.Gradient-echo MR imaging allowed easier assessment of fracture lines than did plain film radiography, but the latter technique remains the primary means of evaluating epiphyseal injuries. For acute fractures of the lower extremity of the tibia, gradient-echo MR imaging should be limited to complex fractures and to cases in which the classification of a fracture on the basis of plain film evaluation is uncertain.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitude of French pediatric radiologists regarding the presence or absence of parents during pediatric imaging of their child. A mail survey was sent to the French members of the "Société Francophone de Radiologie Pédiatrique". We asked about the inclusion of parents during pediatric imaging procedures. They gave the reasons for their choice and stated if parental presence was helpful or not for the achievement of imaging procedures. Responses were received from 76% of those surveyed. Excluding vascular and interventional procedures, few respondents (13%) permit parents to be present for all types of examinations. One respondent excluded parents from every procedure. Others excluded parents from selected studies: plain films (18%), upper gastrointestinal series (33%), contrast enema (44%), retrograde (47%) and suprapubic (67%) voiding cystourethrography, intra-venous pyelography (45%), US (5%), CT (27%), MRI (25%). Regarding angiography, only 2% of the respondents allow parental presence. Every respondent performing interventional procedures did not accept parents in the interventional suite. When parents were present, they were close to their child (76%) and could help in his immobilization (47%). Most of the respondents (49%) thought parental presence to affect examination in a favorable way. The opposite opinion was supported by 25% of them. An equivocal response was given in 26% of the answers. Numerous reasons supported these responses, they could be classified according to the child and his illness, the parents, the radiologist and his team, the examination performed. Most pediatric radiologists in France allow parents to accompany their children during selected examinations. Radiologists vary in their perception of how parental presence affects the outcome of the pediatric imaging procedures.

- Abstract
The contiguous Arctic shelf is the green belt of the Arctic Ocean. Phytoplankton dynamics in this environment are driven by extreme physical gradients and by rapid climate change, which influence light and nutrient availability as well as the growth and ecological characteristics of phytoplankton. A large dataset collected across the Canadian Beaufort Shelf during summer 2009 was analyzed to assess how the interplay of physical and biogeochemical conditions dictates phytoplankton niches and trophic regimes. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis demonstrated marked partitioning of phytoplankton diversity. Elevated phytoplankton biomass (∼ 2.41 μg Chl aL−1) was observed in association with the surface mixed layer near the coast, close to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, and at the shelf‐break as a result of nutrient‐rich Pacific water intrusions. The coastal communities were supported by high levels of nitrogen nutrients and were taxonomically uniform, with diatoms accounting for 95% of total cell numbers. By contrast, adjacent oceanic waters were characterized by low autotrophic biomass near the surface (∼ 0.09 μg Chl aL−1) and below the mixed layer (∼ 0.23 μg Chl aL−1) due to mainly nutrient limitation. However, the oceanic community was more diverse with a mixed assemblage of diatoms and small mixotrophs/heterotrophs near the surface and a predominance of autotrophic nanoflagellates at depth. We conclude that as climate change intensifies freshening and stratification in the Western Arctic Ocean, coastal hotspots of high autotrophic productivity may play an even greater role in supporting Arctic marine ecosystems while offshore environments become increasingly oligotrophic.

An open-label noncomparative clinical study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of ioversol (Optiray 300), a new low-osmolality non ionic contrast medium, in body contrast-enhanced CT scanning in infants and children. Fourty pediatric patients who required contrast-enhanced CT scanning for evaluation of chest, abdominal or pelvic masses participated in the study. The vascular enhancement was judged to be excellent or good in 72.5% of the cases and the CT scans were judged to be diagnostic in 95% of the cases. Ioversol was well tolerated in the study with only two mild adverse reactions (nausea and vomiting, and metallic taste).

Three pediatric cases of malignant rhabdoid tumor of the neck are described. Clinical data and imaging findings (US, CT and MRI) are stressed. The mass was well defined, containing punctate calcifications in two cases and encasing the vessels in two other cases. Two patients were treated with a chemotherapy regimen according to MMT 89 SIOP protocol, one had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Two children died of progressive disease; the remaining child who had complete surgical removal of the tumor is on remission 17 months after diagnosis.

Conservative surgery of primary bone tumors, which has become possible owing to the progress made by chemotherapy, must be carcinological, and it is therefore based on a thorough assessment of local tumor extension. CT and MRI have proven their great value for this assessment. While CT clearly shows the calcified tissue and the extension into soft tissue, MRI is more effective to delineate the tumoral and intraosseous margins and, more importantly, for the exploration within bone, for which it has the advantage of making a study in all planes possible. The anatomical substrate and exact meaning of the MR signal of pathological tissue still remains to be specified. However, MRI already appears to be the essential examination for the assessment of local bone tumor extension. If it did not have contraindications, it could replace CT within the next few years.

Amongst the endothoracic forms of Wegener's granulomatosis, tracheal, bronchial and above all mediastinal localisations are unusual. Such a case having a bad outcome is reported here. Computed Tomography (TDM) was used to assess the extend of pulmonary parenchymal involvement. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was superior to TDM for showing transmural infiltration of the tracheal and the origin of main bronchi.

- Abstract
To reduce the environmental impact of supported catalyst production in compliance with the recommendations of the UN’s 12th objective, which encourages more sustainable consumption and production patterns, we propose to revisit sol–gel chemistry in a more frugal mode. The principle of frugal innovation is to simplify products and processes, eliminate complexities to make solutions easier to understand and use, and reduce production costs. By this way, the synthesis of ruthenium-based catalysts supported on γ-AlOOH and γ-Al2O3is revised via solvent-free sol–gel chemistry. Such catalysts are successfully prepared in one-pot preparation of the active phase and the support using Ru(acac)3/Al alkoxide that requires no sacrificial organic pore-generating agent, no washing, and no filtration and produces no liquid waste. The mixed Ru/Al precursor is hydrolyzed with a stoichiometric amount of water without any solvent. The obtained materials containing 1 and 3% Ru/Al molar ratios have high specific surface areas, from 300 to 690 m2·g–1and exhibit well dispersed NPs of 1–4 nm on γ-AlOOH with interesting CO2methanation activity and 100% CH4selectivity. This proves that a frugal synthesis approach can do as well as traditional synthesis methods while having a much lower environmental impact (cE-factor, water consumption, and energy consumption are 24, 69, and 24 to 42 times lower, respectively) than the standard multistep protocol..

- Abstract
Despite numerous releases for biological control purposes during more than 20 years in Europe, Harmonia axyridis failed to become established until the beginning of the 21st century. Its status as invasive alien species is now widely recognised. Theory suggests that invasive populations should evolve toward greater phenotypic plasticity because they encounter differing environments during the invasion process. On the contrary, populations used for biological control have been maintained under artificial rearing conditions for many generations; they are hence expected to become specialised on a narrow range of environments and show lower phenotypic plasticity. Here we compared phenotypic traits and the extent of adaptive phenotypic plasticity in two invasive populations and two populations commercialized for biological control by (i) measuring six phenotypic traits related to fitness (eggs hatching rate, larval survival rate, development time, sex ratio, fecundity over 6 weeks and survival time of starving adults) at three temperatures (18, 24 and 30°C), (ii) recording the survival rate and quiescence aggregation behaviour when exposed to low temperatures (5, 10 and 15°C), and (iii) studying the cannibalistic behaviour of populations in the absence of food. Invasive and biocontrol populations displayed significantly different responses to temperature variation for a composite fitness index computed from the traits measured at 18, 24 and 30°C, but not for any of those traits considered independently. The plasticity measured on the same fitness index was higher in the two invasive populations, but this difference was not statistically significant. On the other hand, invasive populations displayed significantly higher survival and higher phenotypic plasticity when entering into quiescence at low temperatures. In addition, one invasive population displayed a singular cannibalistic behaviour. Our results hence only partly support the expectation of increased adaptive phenotypic plasticity of European invasive populations of H. axyridis, and stress the importance of the choice of the environmental parameters to be manipulated for assessing phenotypic plasticity variation among populations.

- Abstract
We present new careful semantics within Dung's theory of argumentation. Under such careful semantics, two arguments cannot belong to the same extension whenever one of them indirectly attacks a third argument while the other one indirectly defends the third. We argue that our semantics lead to a better handling of controversial arguments than Dung's ones in some settings. We compare the careful inference relations induced by our semantics w.r.t. cautiousness; we also compare them with the inference relations induced by Dung's semantics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper is centered on the family of Dung's finite argumentation frameworks when the attacks relation is symmetric (and nonempty and irreflexive). We show that while this family does not contain any well-founded framework, every element of it is both coherent and relatively grounded. Then we focus on the acceptability problems for the various semantics introduced by Dung, yet generalized to sets of arguments. We show that only two distinct forms of acceptability are possible when the considered frameworks are symmetric. Those forms of acceptability are quite simple, but tractable; this contrasts with the general case for which all the forms of acceptability are intractable (except for the ones based on grounded or naive extensions).

- Abstract
Tau antagonizes tracking of end-binding proteins (EBs) at microtubule ends, a process requiring the C-terminal part of EBs and the microtubule-binding sites of tau. The inhibiting activity of tau on EB properties is regulated by tau phosphorylation. The interplay between EBs and tau proteins results in modulation of microtubule dynamics.
