The purpose of this study was to examine parental priorities regarding science education in the early years. The study sample included 1456 Turkish parents of pre-K children (36-72 months). Parents were asked to prioritize eight academic content areas, including science, in descending order. The results demonstrated that the number of parents who prioritized science over other academic content areas in pre-K classrooms was quite low. Parents who ranked science highly deviated from the whole sample and almost all of these parents were identified as outliers by the two-step cluster analysis. Parents of boys and younger children and parents with high-SES level were more likely to prioritize science over other academic content areas. The findings suggest that parental preferences overall align well with early childhood teachers' tendency to teach less science than other content areas, and parental priorities might be another major factor that contributes to limited science learning experiences in the early years. While research mainly focuses on the effectiveness of computer use and its contribution to the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL), EFL teachers have received scant attention. Only a limited number of studies have been conducted regarding Turkish EFL teachers' perceptions of computer use for teaching EFL. Therefore, in the context of Turkish EFL teachers' perceptions of computer usage in learning and teaching, the current study aims to examine Turkish EFL teachers' knowledge of software and their reasons for personal computer use, including the attitudes and perceptions of self-confidence among teachers in integrating computers and the school climate and support with respect to the use of computers for teaching EFL. The sample group in the study consisted of 157 EFL teachers. Before descriptives were computed, a background questionnaire and survey that assessed the degree of knowledge about the computer software, the frequency of software use for personal purposes, the teachers' attitudes toward and perceived self-confidence in integrating computers, and finally, the school climate and support were used to collect quantitative data. The results indicated that Turkish EFL teachers have little knowledge about certain software and experience difficulties using the software programs and that they suffer from a lack of technical and instructional support, although they have positive perceptions of computer integration and attitudes toward computer use.

Bu bağlamda yapılan geçerlik ve güvenirlik analizleri ve alınan uzman görüşleri neticesinde 34 maddelik bir sağlık tutum ölçeği ortaya çıkmıştır., Health is one of the most fundamental elements of life and health education is increasing its importance each day. The manner health education influences students especially in primary education, where the foundations of education are laid, is an important topic. When the health education curriculum in primary schools is examined in general, it can be observed that it is in the form of an interim discipline embedded in various disciplines. Health education influences students in various aspects through various disciplines by means of various teachers. This condition leads to the conclusion that the attitude and behavior acquired by the student in primary education regarding health influences his/her life in the future in various forms. Based on all these assumptions, the purpose of the study is to develop an attitude scale in order to determine the attitudes of primary school students on health. In this context, the stages required for the preparation and development of a scale have been followed respectively. The validity analyses of the scale were performed and its reliability was determined. Furthermore, the differences between the mean scores of the lower 27% and upper 27% groups were tested with the unrelated t test. As a result, by consulting expert opinions a valid and reliable 34 item student health attitude scale was attempted to be developed.

Idioms indicate a sense of richness in a language. Thus idioms have a significant place in a language. Understanding and comprehending abstract concepts is rather difficult for a child who is just learning his/her native language. In this context idioms help pre-school children in their understanding of abstract situations. Therefore the amount of idioms that are present in children's books is crucial. This paper explores the idioms in terms of both quality and quantity in Filiz Ozdem's novel Sirlarla Dolu Konak. Filiz Ozdem has an important place in children and teenage literature. She has written productively for a wide range of age groups. Filiz Ozdem's novel entitled Sirlarla Dolu Konak is regarded as early youth novel mainly addressing the age group between 10-12. This novel was first published by YKY in June 2012. So far the book has been published for five times indicating its popularity among young readers. The book, which consists of 118 pages, employs a simple and clear language. Thus, the frequency and usage of idioms in the novel are many. It is observed that the idioms used in the novel are commonly used and known by most of the readers. This paper attempts to determine, list and define the idioms in the novel, and to identify how the author has used them in terms of syntax, style and lexical features., Deyimler bir dilin gelişmişliğinin göstergesidir.

Şenel, Selma (Balikesir Author), This paper examines listening comprehension skills of visually impaired students (VIS) using computerised adaptive testing (CAT) and reader-assisted paper-pencil testing (raPPT) and student views about them. Explanatory mixed method design was used in this study. Sample is comprised of 51 VIS, in 7th and 8th grades. 9 of these students were interviewed for determining student views about tests. Results indicated that scores obtained from CAT are significantly lower than scores obtained from raPPT. Additionally, a positive and high correlation was found between scores of CAT and raPPT. This result suggests that similar ability estimations were made by CAT and raPPT. Another finding is CAT made more reliable predictions, and was completed in shorter duration using fewer items. In qualitative part, student views were gathered through interviews and content analysis revealed three themes as technical features, test features, and psychological effects. In general, students reported positive views about CAT. VIS prefer CAT due to its listening/control options, shorter test durations, clarity of reading, and fairness of test, elimination of dependency to reader. Study provides implications for test developers and test-users to consider CAT as a multi-accommodation for VIS through its advantages. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Her iki öğretmen adayı grubu da matematik öğretimi yapacağından, eleştirel düşünmeyle matematik öğretimi arasında ilişki de kurularak elde edilen sonuçlar tartışılmıştır, The aim of this study is to determine the critical thinking tendency levels of the classroom and elementary mathematics teacher candidates, and the effect of gender and class level variables on the levels of critical thinking. Cross-sectional model was used. The study was conducted with 549 teacher candidates studying at Balıkesir University Necatibey Education Faculty in the fall semester of 2014-2015 academic year. 240 of the teacher candidates participating in the study are taught in classroom education and 309 are taught in elementary mathematics education. As data collection tool, the California Critical Thinking Tendency Scale (CCTDI-T) developed by Demographic Information Form and Facione, Facione and Giancarlo (1998), and adopted to Turkish by Kökdemir (2003) was used. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. According to the results of the study, it was found that general critical thinking tendencies of the teacher candidates participating in the study were slightly above the average level. The gender variable was found to have no significant effect on the general level of critical thinking. When the effect of the gender variable in the subscales was analyzed, analyticity, open-mindedness and truth-seeking dimensions were found to be significantly higher in female teacher candidates, whereas inquistiveness dimension was statistically significant in the male teacher candidates. In systematicity and self-confidence sub-dimensions, gender was not significant. When we look at scores from the overall scale, there was a significant difference between grades in terms of the critical thinking tendency levels. 1st and 2nd graders had significantly higher scores than 3rd and 4th grades. In the analytical, open-mindedness and systematicity sub-dimensions, a significant difference was found among grades, and the difference was in favor of the 1st graders. In the other sub-dimensions, the grade level did not make any significant difference. As both groups of teachers will teach mathematics, by establishing relationship between critical thinking and mathematics teaching, the results were discussed. The aim of this study is to determine the critical thinking tendencies of the preservice primary school and elementary mathematics teachers. The effects of gender and grade on the critical thinking tendencies of teacher candidates were investigated. The study was carried out with 549 preservice teachers studying at Balikesir University, the Faculty of Education in the fall semester of 2014-2015 academic year. 240 of the teacher candidates participating in the study were taught in primary school teaching while 309 were in elementary mathematics teaching. Cross-sectional survey model was used in the study. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) developed by Demographic Information Form and Facione, Facione and Giancarlo (1998), and adopted to Turkish by Kökdemir (2003) was used as data collection tool. In data analysis, descriptive statistics including mean, percentage and standard deviation were used. Independent sample T-test was used to investigate whether gender had a significant effect on the scores obtained from the general and subscales of the inventory. Oneway ANOVA test was used to examine whether grade affected the critical thinking tendencies. Before using one-way ANOVA, whether the data showed a normal distribution was checked. Values of skewness and kurtosis were taken into account to check whether the data were normally distributed. It was found that the data showed normal distribution. Tukey test was used to determine the source of the difference in the case of significant differences was observed in ANOVA analysis. When the results obtained from tukey analysis was significant, the value of the chi square (?2) was used to determine the effect of the grade variable. The findings were evaluated in 95% confidence interval and 5% significance level. SPSS version 20.0 software was used for the analysis of the data. The findings of the data demonstrated that the critical thinking tendencies of preservice primary school and elementary mathematics teachers were high. However, this level was closer to the average. There are similar studies in the literature which reported average critical thinking tendencies for university students and preservice teachers (Bayrak, 2014; Beşoluk & Önder, 2010; Kartal, 2012; Koçak et al., 2015). A tendency to think critically at a little higher than average level may not be sufficient to achieve the program goals of mathematics teaching. As Gupta (2005) notes, this situation highlights the inadequate critical thinking teaching and learning during university education. Although the level of critical thinking tendency of teacher candidates is a little higher than average, this situation might be due to the influence of education prior to university. In other words, the critical thinking tendency of preservice teachers, who had a high level at the beginning of their university education was not developed yet gradually decreased to average. Preservice teachers will be expected to improve their students’ critical thinking skills. Yet, as future teachers, they first need to have a high level of critical thinking skills so that they can assist to the education of learners targeted by renewed primary and secondary school mathematics teaching programs. In the study, the subscales of the critical thinking tendency inventory were also examined. The participants had the highest score in open-mindedness subscale, while they had the lowest score in systematicity subscale. The fact that the elementary preservice mathematics teachers had the highest scores in open mindedness subscale shows that they are innovative, open to new ideas and can think flexibly. Additionally, the fact that the highest average score was in the open-mindedness subscale can be interpreted as the teacher candidates are enthusiastic about developing their critical thinking levels which are above the average. In the study, the lowest mean scores were in systematicity subscale. This may indicate that preservice teachers lacks in planning and organizing research. The second highest scores were in the analyticity subscale. Analytical thinking is important and necessary for both mathematical thinking and critical thinking. It was also found that the gender variable did not significantly differ in terms of critical thinking tendencies. This result is in parallel with many studies (Bayrak, 2014; Bozpolat, 2010, Ekinci & Aybek, 2010; Leach & Good, 2011; Myers & Dyer, 2002). Regarding gender, different results have been observed in different studies. There were no significant differences in the level of critical thinking between male and female teacher candidates, which is similar to the majority of studies on critical thinking. It can be said that the activities to develop critical thinking can be applied regardless of gender. It was also examined whether the gender caused a significant difference between the scores obtained from the subscales. The results demonstrated that there was a significant difference between mean scores of female and male preservice teachers in the subscale of inquistiveness which favoring males and the mean scores of male preservice teachers were higher than that of females. In the analyticity, open-mindedness and inquistiveness subscales, there was a statistically significant difference in gender variable favoring female teacher candidates. When various studies on critical thinking were examined, it was seen that the results were similar. McBridge, Xiang and Wittenburg (2007) found significant differences in open-mindedness and inquistiveness, Genç (2008) observed differences in open-mindedness and inquistiveness, and Semerci (2010) found differences in analyticity open-mindedness and inquisitiveness, which was in favor of females. When the effect of gender on the subscales was taken into consideration as a whole, it was found that the results differed in truth-seeking and inquisitiveness; however female teachers had higher scores in analyticity and open-mindedness. The results also showed that there was no significant difference between the mean scores of preservice teachers’ critical thinking tendency regarding their grade levels. The mean scores of the critical thinking tendency according to grades showed a gradual decrease from 1st to 4th grades. Significant differences were found between 1-3 and 1-4 classes, favoring first grades. In addition, significant differences were discovered between 2-3 and 2-4 grades, favoring second grades. This result were in parallel with the studies of Gülveren (2007) and Akar (2007), and quite similar to Koçak et al. (2015). Although the tendency of critical thinking was found to be the highest at the first grades, this level of tendency was slightly higher than the average level. The classes that the preservice mathematics teachers take during university education do not support their high-level critical thinking development. University education is an important stage for critical thinking. As the mainstream courses are mostly emphasized at the first grade, the critical thinking levels mostly develop at this grade (Cross & Steadman, 1996). However, such a development was not observed for teacher candidates in this study. Another reason may be the teaching styles of academicians in universities. According to Tobias (1992) and Tsui (1999), teachers should use learning and teaching strategies that focus on the cognitive development of learners. These strategies should be in combination with content and understandable for the learners. Additionally, they should be enhance student-student interaction and focus on structuring students' learning rather than memorizing. An education based on recalling and memorizing may not have provided sufficient development of critical thinking as seen in this study. The level of critical thinking, which is higher than the average at the first graders, gradually decreased towards the fourth class. Classes not adequately including complex problem solving situations, teaching styles that require low-level thinking and memorizing and the use of multiple choice questions can be seen as an impediment to the development of critical thinking (Halpern, 1999; King, 1995; Pinet, 1999). However, emphasis should be placed on methods related to real life and problem solving instead of memorizing and remembrance for the development of critical thinking in mathematics teaching (Hammerman & Goldberg, 2003; Hosseinpour, 2006; Paul, 2004). As a result, education faculties should support, develop and maintain critical thinking skills of preservice teachers. Relations between high-level thinking skills and mathematics teaching should be well structured in all levels of education, especially during university education. Activities that promote high-level thinking skills should be included in mathematics teaching and in other teaching courses during university education. The reasons for the tendency of teacher candidates to think critically, usually at an average level and slightly above, should be questioned.

Bu durum görüşme sonuçları ile de desteklenmektedir, The aim of this study is to examine prospective music teachers’ self-perceptions of problem-solving skills (PSS) and how these perceptions affect their ability to solve problems encountered during piano courses. In addition, PSS perceptions of students were examined to see if they varied by gender and the type of high school from which they graduated, and whether there was a meaningful relationship with their success in the piano course. The study group comprised 35 prospective music teachers attending the first year of college. Quantitative data was collected using the “Problem Solving Inventory” developed by Heppner and Petersen (1982), while qualitative data consisted of recorded interviews conducted with 10 students. The data was analyzed using the t-test for independent groups, correlation analysis and content analysis. The study findings suggested that the prospective music teachers had a negative perception of their problem-solving skills. The interviews showed that students with negative PSS perceptions were more successful in solving the problems they encountered during piano courses. Students with positive perceptions, on the other hand, said they did not have confidence in their ability to solve problems during piano courses. There were no significant gender-related differences in the total scores or in the approach-avoidance and the personal control dimensions. In terms of problem solving confidence, there was a significant difference in favor of male students. Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship between PSS perception scores, the type of school from which the students graduated, and their success in piano courses. Interview results also supported this finding

Coramik, Mustafa (Balikesir Author), Today's main energy sources; natural gas, petrol and petroleum products are transported via pipelines that are safe at long distances. Most of these pipelines are buried and their integrity is highly important. Deformations like corrosions, dents and cracks destruct the integrity of pipeline and they can cause highly dangerous damaging results. Loss of lives, economical losses and environmental pollution can be given as an example of the problems that may occur. Prevention of such adversities before they occur is possible by inspection of pipelines at specific intervals. In recent years, the devices named "Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG)" and designed according to Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques are used for inspection without destructing pipelines. In this study, the importance of pipeline inspection is firstly emphasized and the studies about the inspection of pipelines at literature are examined. In addition, the usage purposes of PIGs, the basics of Non-destructive Evaluation technologies and the samples of applications at pipelines are examined. According to data obtained from the study, suggestions are made about pipeline inspection.

research, Almost all countries periodically review and discuss their educational systems and their content due to the growing importance attached to educational activities. The goal here is to allow the use of innovative and different methodologies and to reflect scientific advances and social developments and innovations on school life which is one of the main dynamics of society. However, there are some topics that are never included in teaching curriculums although their content is directly related to the other topics in the curriculum. One of these topics is Geographical Indications (GI). Literature shows the fact that one of the most crucial parts of country and regional development both in scientific and political areas is rural development as emphasized in all platforms. The simplest way to ensure rural development is to make use and market the goods and values produced in rural environments. Based on this, it can be claimed that protecting the goods via GI, which aims to ensure the protection of goods which possess a certain reputation, is actually protecting the producer. Providing value for the product in markets will satisfy the producer in economic terms and the area will develop since the producer will not leave the present location. Therefore, the economy of the country will also benefit. Since GI does not only aim to protect the producer but also the consumer; the producer, consumers and all people in a nation will benefit from this protection. Although it is a rather well established process historically, such a significant program which has come to the fore in the past 30 years in our country is not directly or indirectly included in geography curriculums in Turkey. This study which utilized document review, a qualitative research method, addresses the topic of GI and presents suggestions as to how GI can be included in Secondary School Geography Curriculum for 11th and 12th grades and what learning outcomes it can entail.

Bununla birlikte bu çalışmanın temel amacı, hem karakterlerin psikolojik durumlarını hem de oyunun simgesel anlamlarını ortaya çıkarmak için 'anacoluthon' terimine özgü bir sınıflandırma yapmak ve oyundaki karakterlerin söylemlerinden örnekler vererek 'anacoluthon'un metin içi işlevlerini ortaya çıkarmaktır, An absurdist play entitled Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett has had received many interpretations and criticism covering a wide range of issues since its first premiere in 1953 in the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris. The play offers varying approaches for appreciating the significance of historical context in interpretation as well as the relevance of linguistic and unconscious components of the text. For instance, the play is interpreted in term of politics, religion, psychoanalytic, homoerotic and philosophical approaches among many others. However, the play is not examined in relation to the functions of ‘anacoluthon’, a linguistic term which can generally be defined as an unexpected discontinuity or disjointedness in the expression of ideas within a sentence by giving rise to a form of words in which there is logical incoherence of thought. Accordingly, in this paper firstly the demarcations between ‘language’ and ‘culture’ are exposed briefly as both of the conceptions are heavily dealt with the term ‘anacoluthon’. Secondly, anacoluthon is elucidated in terms of its use and function with reference to its historical context. However, the main purpose of this paper is to unveil the functions of anacoluthon by making a classification and also to expose intra-textual functions of anacoluthon by exemplifying the discourses in order to shed light into the psychological situations of the characters and figurative meaning of the play

) eleştirel okumaya ve öğretimine ilişkin uygulamalara yer verilmeli ve programların Eleştirel Okuma, Medya Okuryazarlığı gibi seçmeli derslerle desteklenmesi sağlanmalıdır., Problem Statement:Critical reading refers to individuals' thinking about what they read, assessing what they have read, and using their own judgment about what they have read. In order to teach critical reading skills to students, a teacher is expected to have knowledge about text selection, use of appropriate methods, preparation of functional learning and teaching processes, among other qualities; teachers must display critical reading skills as well. Purpose of Study: The aim of the study was to determine the critical reading levels of pre-service teachers of Turkish language as well as Turkish language and literature in terms of several variables in order to make inferences about pre-service teachers' potential to develop their students' critical reading skills. Method: The study group, which was selected using the descriptive survey model, consisted of a total of 173 students attending Balikesir University Necatibey Faculty of Education. A personal information form and the Critical Reading Achievement Test (CRAT) were used as the data collection tools. CRAT employs a multiple-choice format, and its KR 20 reliability was determined to be .81 and its mean difficulty.64. The data were analyzed using a t-test and variance analysis1. Findings and Results: The study revealed that pre-service teachers' have moderate critical reading skills. In addition, in the analysis examining the relationships of pre-service teachers' critical reading levels to their department, a difference emerged in favor of students from the Turkish Language and Literature Department. In contrast, the analysis revealed that the variables of gender, achievement level, number of books read annually, the preferred book types, and the effective use of social media did not influence students' critical reading levels. Conclusions and Recommendations: Critical reading education constitutes an important dimension of language teaching programs that aim to improve comprehension and expression skills. It is important that pre-service teachers have critical reading skills and know how to teach critical reading. Therefore, critical reading practices and ways of teaching this skill should be included in appropriate courses (reading education, special teaching methods, etc.) in both Turkish language as well as Turkish language and literature teaching programs; additionally, these programs should be supported with optional courses such as critical reading and media literacy.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the role of internal factors (e.g. attitudes towards computers and internet, self-confidence, and knowledge) and external factors (perceived support) on the level of information and communication technology (ICT) usage. The participants were 1898 pre-service teachers in Turkey. The results revealed that Turkey, like many other developing countries in the world, is in the early phase of ICT integration in education. Most pre-service teachers reported that they use only basic ICT applications for educational purposes. Internal and external factors were found to be related to each other and to ICT usage level. In general, male pre-service teachers' knowledge and usage levels of ICT were higher than that of female teachers.
