Psychology and mental health - Abstract
There is a burgeoning evidence base highlighting the positive influence of benevolent childhood experiences (BCEs), even in the context of adversity. However, few measures are available to assess BCEs. The current study sought to develop and validate a measure which assesses positive recollections of experiences and emotions at home and with family during childhood called the 'Memories of Home and Family Scale'(MHFS). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed to test the latent structure of the preliminary MHFS item scores in a sample of university students from the United Kingdom (N = 624). Following selection of the best-fitting model and final items for inclusion in the scale, total and subscale scores were correlated with a range of mental health outcomes. CFA results indicated that the latent structure of the MHFS items was best represented by a correlated six-factor first-order model. The final MHFS demonstrated high levels of internal reliability and convergent validity., Author(s): Mark Shevlin [sup.1] , Enya Redican [sup.1] , Eoin McElroy [sup.1] , Menachem Ben-Ezra [sup.2] , Thanos Karatzias [sup.3] , Philip Hyland [sup.4] Author Affiliations: (1) grid.12641.30, 0000000105519715, School [...]

Abstract There is increasing interest in individualizing treatment selection for more than 25 regulatory approved treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD). Despite an inconclusive efficacy evidence base, antidepressants (ADs) are prescribed for the depressive phase of bipolar disorder (BD) with oftentimes, an inadequate treatment response and or clinical concern for mood destabilization. This study explored the relationship between antidepressant response in MDD and antidepressant-associated treatment emergent mania (TEM) in BD. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and polygenic score analysis of TEM and tested its association in a subset of BD-type I patients treated with SSRIs or SNRIs. Our results did not identify any genome-wide significant variants although, we found that a higher polygenic score (PGS) for antidepressant response in MDD was associated with higher odds of TEM in BD. Future studies with larger transdiagnostic depressed cohorts treated with antidepressants are encouraged to identify a neurobiological mechanism associated with a spectrum of depression improvement from response to emergent mania.

Abstract Lithium is the gold standard treatment for bipolar disorder (BD). However, its mechanism of action is incompletely understood, and prediction of treatment outcomes is limited. In our previous multi-omics study of the Pharmacogenomics of Bipolar Disorder (PGBD) sample combining transcriptomic and genomic data, we found that focal adhesion, the extracellular matrix (ECM), and PI3K-Akt signaling networks were associated with response to lithium. In this study, we replicated the results of our previous study using network propagation methods in a genome-wide association study of an independent sample of 2039 patients from the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLiGen) study. We identified functional enrichment in focal adhesion and PI3K-Akt pathways, but we did not find an association with the ECM pathway. Our results suggest that deficits in the neuronal growth cone and PI3K-Akt signaling, but not in ECM proteins, may influence response to lithium in BD.

Abstract Background Affect can influence people’s perceptions, decisions, and the way they make sense of an experience. Some studies show that having one’s cell phone removed will lead to negative emotional reactions, while others have found no significant impact on how we feel. In this paper we investigate the impact of cell phone possession and removal on participant’s affective state. Methods We use a randomized double-blind procedure to examine whether cell phone removal enhances negativity, promotes positivity, or is emotionally inconsequential. We measure affect using a PANAS self-report scale as well as a less transparent temporal-estimation procedure. Results Our findings suggest that cell phone possession or removal has no influence on a person’s affective state. Conclusions Measured through both the PANAS self-report scale and temporal estimation task, affect remained consistent regardless of cell phone possession. These results suggest that cell phones may not carry the emotional weight often attributed to them. This finding challenges a common theme revolving around the negative emotional impact of cell phones and technology. Consequently, these findings may have important implications for the generally perceived notion that cell phones are having a negative effect on people’s emotions.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present the first comprehensive search for high-energy neutrino emission from high- and low-mass X-ray binaries conducted by IceCube. Galactic X-ray binaries are long-standing candidates for the source of Galactic hadronic cosmic rays and neutrinos. The compact object in these systems can be the site of cosmic-ray acceleration, and neutrinos can be produced by interactions of cosmic rays with radiation or gas, in the jet of a microquasar, in the stellar wind, or in the atmosphere of the companion star. We study X-ray binaries using 7.5 years of IceCube data with three separate analyses. In the first, we search for periodic neutrino emission from 55 binaries in the Northern Sky with known orbital periods. In the second, the X-ray light curves of 102 binaries across the entire sky are used as templates to search for time-dependent neutrino emission. Finally, we search for time-integrated emission of neutrinos for a list of 4 notable binaries identified as microquasars. In the absence of a significant excess, we place upper limits on the neutrino flux for each hypothesis and compare our results with theoretical predictions for several binaries. In addition, we evaluate the sensitivity of the next generation neutrino telescope at the South Pole, IceCube-Gen2, and demonstrate its power to identify potential neutrino emission from these binary sources in the Galaxy., Comment: 10+7 pages, 4 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present a measurement of the density of GeV muons in near-vertical air showers using three years of data recorded by the IceTop array at the South Pole. Depending on the shower size, the muon densities have been measured at lateral distances between 200 m and 1000 m. From these lateral distributions, we derive the muon densities as functions of energy at reference distances of 600 m and 800 m for primary energies between 2.5 PeV and 40 PeV and between 9 PeV and 120 PeV, respectively. The muon densities are determined using, as a baseline, the hadronic interaction model Sibyll 2.1 together with various composition models. The measurements are consistent with the predicted muon densities within these baseline interaction and composition models. The measured muon densities have also been compared to simulations using the post-LHC models EPOS-LHC and QGSJet-II.04. The result of this comparison is that the post-LHC models together with any given composition model yield higher muon densities than observed. This is in contrast to the observations above 1 EeV where all model simulations yield for any mass composition lower muon densities than the measured ones. The post-LHC models in general feature higher muon densities so that the agreement with experimental data at the highest energies is improved but the muon densities are not correct in the energy range between 2.5 PeV and about 100 PeV., Comment: 20 pages, 17 captioned figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Based on these results, we further constrain the neutrino flux spatially correlated with UHECRs., Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables; updated source files including xml authorlist

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter $\epsilon_{\mu \tau}$. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p-value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of $-0.0041 \leq \epsilon_{\mu \tau} \leq 0.0031$ along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Statistics - Computation - Abstract
The package provides multivariate time series models for structural analysis, allowing one to extract latent signals such as trends or seasonality. Models are fitted using maximum likelihood estimation, allowing for non-stationarity, fixed regression effects, and ragged-edge missing values. Simple types of extreme values can be corrected using the device of entropy maximization. Model adequacy is assessed through residual diagnostics, and model-based signal extraction filters can be assessed in time domain and frequency domain. Extracted signals are produced with uncertainty measures that account for sample edge effects and missing values, and the signals (as well as the original time series) can be forecasted.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
The relative distribution of molecular gas and star formation in galaxies gives insight into the physical processes and timescales of the cycle between gas and stars. In this work, we track the relative spatial configuration of CO and H$\alpha$ emission at high resolution in each of our galaxy targets, and use these measurements to quantify the distributions of regions in different evolutionary stages of star formation: from molecular gas without star formation traced by H$\alpha$ to star-forming gas, and to HII regions. The large sample, drawn from the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS ALMA and narrowband H$\alpha$ (PHANGS-ALMA and PHANGS-H$\alpha$) surveys, spans a wide range of stellar mass and morphological types, allowing us to investigate the dependencies of the gas-star formation cycle on global galaxy properties. At a resolution of 150 pc, the incidence of regions in different stages shows a dependence on stellar mass and Hubble type of galaxies over the radial range probed. Massive and/or earlier-type galaxies exhibit a significant reservoir of molecular gas without star formation traced by H$\alpha$, while lower-mass galaxies harbor substantial HII regions that may have dispersed their birth clouds or formed from low-mass, more isolated clouds. Galactic structures add a further layer of complexity to relative distribution of CO and H$\alpha$ emission. Trends between galaxy properties and distributions of gas traced by CO and H$\alpha$ are visible only when the observed spatial scale is $\ll$ 500 pc, reflecting the critical resolution requirement to distinguish stages of star formation process., Comment: 60 pages, 22 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract Background Emergency departments are important points of intervention, to reduce the risk of further self-harm and suicide. A national programme to standardise the management of people presenting to the emergency department with self-harm and suicidal ideation (NCPSHI) was introduced in Ireland in 2014. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the NCPSHI on patient outcomes and provision of care. Methods Data on self-harm presentations were obtained from the National Self-Harm Registry Ireland from 2012 to 2017. The impacts of the NCPSHI on study outcomes (3-month self-harm repetition, biopsychosocial assessment provision, admission, post-discharge referral, and self-discharge) were examined at an individual and aggregate (hospital) level, using a before and after study design and interrupted time series analyses, respectively. The 15 hospitals that implemented the programme by January 2015 (of a total of 24 between 2015 and 2017) were included in the analyses. Results There were 31,970 self-harm presentations during the study period. In hospitals with no service for self-harm (n = 4), risk of patients not being assessed reduced from 31.8 to 24.7% following the introduction of the NCPSHI. Mental health referral in this hospital group increased from 42.2 to 59.0% and medical admission decreased from 27.5 to 24.3%. Signs of a reduction in self-harm repetition were observed for this hospital group, from 35.1 to 30.4% among individuals with a history of self-harm, but statistical evidence was weak. In hospitals with a pre-existing liaison psychiatry service (n = 7), risk of self-discharge was lower post-NCPSHI (17.8% vs. 14.8%). In hospitals with liaison nurse(s) pre-NCPSHI (n = 4), medical admission reduced (27.5% vs. 24.3%) and there was an increase in self-harm repetition (from 5.2 to 7.8%. for those without a self-harm history). Conclusion The NCPSHI was associated with improvements in the provision of care across hospital groups, particularly those with no prior service for self-harm, highlighting the need to consider pre-existing context in implementation planning. Our evaluation emphasises the need for proper resourcing to support the implementation of clinical guidelines on the provision of care for people presenting to hospital with self-harm.

178. Too Much of a Good Thing: Differentiating Intellectual Humility from Servility in Higher Education

- Abstract
Recent studies have suggested that intellectual humility (IH) might facilitate (a) better learning outcomes, (b) more scientific mindedness, and (c) better peer and professional relationships. However, recent philosophical work has raised concerns that too much IH might lead to intellectual servility (IS), and thus might be vicious (albeit not blameworthy) rather than virtuous. We define IS as a disposition to over-own one's intellectual limitations and disregard one's intellectual strengths. We begin by outlining the importance of distinguishing IS from IH, noting that marginalized social groups (e.g., students of color) may be at greater risk for developing the vice of IS than the vice of intellectual arrogance. Then, in a sample of 94 racially diverse undergraduate students, we provide evidence that IS may be detrimental in educational contexts. IS was positively related to maladaptive perfectionism, and it was negatively related to civic engagement, conscientiousness, and openness. We conclude by discussing implications for fostering virtuous IH in higher educational settings. Namely, if IH interventions do not correct for the possibility of over-owning limitations, we risk exacerbating IS.

- Abstract
Controlling unwanted annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) in desirable turfgrass species often relies heavily on herbicide use. As a result, increasing populations of herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass have become a concern. In 2018, a university research and extension initiative began addressing the increasing herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass epidemic. Preliminary findings produced by this research initiative were presented to golf course employees at the 2022 Golf Course Superintendents Association of American Educational Conference in San Diego, California. Findings were presented by a panel of scientists working on various annual bluegrass research sub-objectives. A survey was designed to match the sub-objectives within this panel presentation and determine what recommendations the attendees were most likely to use. The survey also identified environmental zones where participants originated and what turfgrass species they are managing in various areas of the golf course. The goal of sharing these survey findings is to assist turfgrass extension specialists and managers interested in designing annual bluegrass management programs that match stakeholder needs. Survey results determined that extension material pertaining to controlling annual bluegrass with cultural practices would interest the largest stakeholder cross section regardless of environmental turfgrass zone. Another major topic was annual bluegrass emergence patterns for herbicide timing, which was the most important or interesting topic for golf course employees in the warm-season turfgrass environmental zone.

- Abstract
Blending narrative portraiture and feminist methods, this study explored the lives of two rural women who are creative writers. The study asked (1) What are their critical purposes? and (2) How did gender and place intersect in their writing lives? The findings were that the women used creative writing to engage in praxis by creating and disseminating knowledge. Their writing critically interrogated and redefined conceptions of womanhood. Additional critical purposes were unique to women's intersectional identities and lived experiences. They ranged from interrogating societal perspectives of gender, sexuality, and race to interrogating rurality and sexual violence. The aesthetic texts they created articulated and advocated for intersubjective truths. Shifting the focus of critical literacy from pedagogy and reading to writing beyond educational spaces, the women drew upon critical literacy not as a means of being taught how to understand the power of texts, but to wield the power of texts themselves.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
[Abridged] AGN are thought to be intimately connected with their host galaxies through feeding and feedback processes. A spatially resolved multiwavelength survey is required to map the interaction of AGN with their host galaxies on different spatial scales and different phases of the ISM. The goal of CARS is to obtain the necessary spatially resolved multiwavelength observations for an unbiased sample of local unobscured luminous AGN. We present the overall CARS survey design and the associated wide-field optical IFU spectroscopy for all 41 CARS targets at z<0.06 randomly selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey of luminous unobscured AGN. This data set provides the backbone of CARS and allows us to characterize host galaxy morphologies, AGN parameters, precise systemic redshifts, and ionized gas distributions including excitation conditions, kinematics, and metallicities in unprecedented detail. We focus our study on the size of the ENLR which has been traditionally connected to AGN luminosity. Given the large scatter in the ENLR size-luminosity relation, we performed a large parameter search to identify potentially more fundamental relations. Remarkably, we identified the strongest correlation between the maximum projected ENLR size and the black hole mass, consistent with an $R_\mathrm{ENLR,max}\sim M_\mathrm{BH}^{0.5}$ relationship. We interpret the maximum ENLR size as a timescale indicator of a single BH radiative-efficient accretion episode for which we inferred log(t_AGN) = (0.45+- 0.08)log(M_BH)+1.78 using forward modeling. The extrapolation of our inferred relation toward higher BH masses is consistent with an independent lifetime estimate from the HeII proximity zones around luminous AGN at z~3. While our proposed link between the BH mass and AGN lifetime might be a secondary correlation itself or impacted by unknown biases, it has a few relevant implications if confirmed., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 20 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables, data available at https://cars.aip.de

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present a measurement of the high-energy astrophysical muon-neutrino flux with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The measurement uses a high-purity selection of ~650k neutrino-induced muon tracks from the Northern celestial hemisphere, corresponding to 9.5 years of experimental data. With respect to previous publications, the measurement is improved by the increased size of the event sample and the extended model testing beyond simple power-law hypotheses. An updated treatment of systematic uncertainties and atmospheric background fluxes has been implemented based on recent models. The best-fit single power-law parameterization for the astrophysical energy spectrum results in a normalization of $\phi_{\mathrm{@100TeV}}^{\nu_\mu+\bar{\nu}_\mu} = 1.44_{-0.26}^{+0.25} \times 10^{-18}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ and a spectral index $\gamma_{\mathrm{SPL}} = 2.37_{-0.09}^{+0.09}$, constrained in the energy range from $15\,\mathrm{TeV}$ to $5\,\mathrm{PeV}$. The model tests include a single power law with a spectral cutoff at high energies, a log-parabola model, several source-class specific flux predictions from the literature and a model-independent spectral unfolding. The data is well consistent with a single power law hypothesis, however, spectra with softening above one PeV are statistically more favorable at a two sigma level., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The sources of the majority of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed with the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole are unknown. So far, only a gamma-ray blazar was compellingly associated with the emission of high-energy neutrinos. In addition, several studies suggest that the neutrino emission from the gamma-ray blazar population only accounts for a small fraction of the total astrophysical neutrino flux. In this work we probe the production of high-energy neutrinos in the cores of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), induced by accelerated cosmic rays in the accretion disk region. We present a likelihood analysis based on eight years of IceCube data, searching for a cumulative neutrino signal from three AGN samples created for this work. The neutrino emission is assumed to be proportional to the accretion disk luminosity estimated from the soft X-ray flux. Next to the observed soft X-ray flux, the objects for the three samples have been selected based on their radio emission and infrared color properties. For the largest sample in this search, an excess of high-energy neutrino events with respect to an isotropic background of atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos is found, corresponding to a post-trial significance of 2.60$\sigma$. Assuming a power-law spectrum, the best-fit spectral index is $2.03^{+0.14}_{-0.11}$, consistent with expectations from particle acceleration in astrophysical sources. If interpreted as a genuine signal with the assumptions of a proportionality of X-ray and neutrino fluxes and a model for the sub-threshold flux distribution, this observation implies that at 100 TeV, 27$\%$ - 100$\%$ of the observed neutrinos arise from particle acceleration in the core of AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The Sun provides an excellent target for studying spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering due to its high matter density and abundant hydrogen content. Dark matter particles from the Galactic halo can elastically interact with Solar nuclei, resulting in their capture and thermalization in the Sun. The captured dark matter can annihilate into Standard Model particles including an observable flux of neutrinos. We present the results of a search for low-energy ($<$ 500 GeV) neutrinos correlated with the direction of the Sun using 7 years of IceCube data. This work utilizes, for the first time, new optimized cuts to extend IceCube's sensitivity to dark matter mass down to 5 GeV. We find no significant detection of neutrinos from the Sun. Our observations exclude capture by spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering with cross-section down to a few times $10^{-41}$ cm$^2$, assuming there is equilibrium with annihilation into neutrinos/anti-neutrinos for dark matter masses between 5 GeV and 100 GeV. These are the strongest constraints at GeV energies for dark matter annihilation directly to neutrinos., Comment: Published in Physical Review D. Typo corrected in table IV

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We use an unprecedented sample of about 23,000 HII regions detected at an average physical resolution of 67pc in the PHANGS-MUSE sample to study the extragalactic HII region Ha luminosity function (LF). Our observations probe the star-forming disk of 19 nearby spiral galaxies with low inclination and located close to the star formation main sequence at z=0. The mean LF slope $\alpha$ in our sample is =1.73 with a $\sigma$ of 0.15. We find that $\alpha$ decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density and argue that this is driven by an enhanced clustering of young stars at high gas surface densities. Looking at the HII regions within single galaxies we find that no significant variations occur between the LF of the inner and outer part of the star-forming disk, whereas the LF in the spiral arm areas is shallower than in the inter-arm areas for six out of the 13 galaxies with clearly visible spiral arms. We attribute these variations to the spiral arms increasing the molecular clouds arm--inter-arm mass contrast and find suggestive evidence that they are more evident for galaxies with stronger spiral arms. Furthermore, we find systematic variations in $\alpha$ between samples of HII regions with high and low ionization parameter q and argue that they are driven by the aging of HII regions., Comment: Accepted in A&A. High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Along their long propagation from production to detection, neutrino states undergo quantum interference which converts their types, or flavours. High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, first observed by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, are known to propagate unperturbed over a billion light years in vacuum. These neutrinos act as the largest quantum interferometer and are sensitive to the smallest effects in vacuum due to new physics. Quantum gravity (QG) aims to describe gravity in a quantum mechanical framework, unifying matter, forces and space-time. QG effects are expected to appear at the ultra-high-energy scale known as the Planck energy, $E_{P}\equiv 1.22\times 10^{19}$~giga-electronvolts (GeV). Such a high-energy universe would have existed only right after the Big Bang and it is inaccessible by human technologies. On the other hand, it is speculated that the effects of QG may exist in our low-energy vacuum, but are suppressed by the Planck energy as $E_{P}^{-1}$ ($\sim 10^{-19}$~GeV$^{-1}$), $E_{P}^{-2}$ ($\sim 10^{-38}$~GeV$^{-2}$), or its higher powers. The coupling of particles to these effects is too small to measure in kinematic observables, but the phase shift of neutrino waves could cause observable flavour conversions. Here, we report the first result of neutrino interferometry~\cite{Aartsen:2017ibm} using astrophysical neutrino flavours to search for new space-time structure. We did not find any evidence of anomalous flavour conversion in IceCube astrophysical neutrino flavour data. We place the most stringent limits of any known technologies, down to $10^{-42}$~GeV$^{-2}$, on the dimension-six operators that parameterize the space-time defects for preferred astrophysical production scenarios. For the first time, we unambiguously reach the signal region of quantum-gravity-motivated physics., Comment: The main text is 7 pages with 3 figures and 1 table. Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
The feedback from young stars (i.e. pre-supernova) is thought to play a crucial role in molecular cloud destruction. In this paper, we assess the feedback mechanisms acting within a sample of 5810 HII regions identified from the PHANGS-MUSE survey of 19 nearby ($<$ 20 Mpc) star-forming, main sequence spiral galaxies (log($M_\star$/M$_\odot$)= 9.4 $-$ 11). These optical spectroscopic maps are essential to constrain the physical properties of the HII regions, which we use to investigate their internal pressure terms. We estimate the photoionised gas ($P_\mathrm{therm}$), direct radiation ($P_\mathrm{rad}$), and mechanical wind pressure ($P_\mathrm{wind}$), which we compare to the confining pressure of their host environment ($P_\mathrm{de}$). The HII regions remain unresolved within our ${\sim}50{-}100$ pc resolution observations, so we place upper ($P_\mathrm{max}$) and lower ($P_\mathrm{min}$) limits on each of the pressures by using a minimum (i.e. clumpy structure) and maximum (i.e. smooth structure) size, respectively. We find that the $P_\mathrm{max}$ measurements are broadly similar, and for $P_\mathrm{min}$ the $P_\mathrm{therm}$ is mildly dominant. We find that the majority of HII regions are over-pressured, $P_\mathrm{tot}/P_\mathrm{de} = (P_\mathrm{therm}+P_\mathrm{wind}+P_\mathrm{rad})/P_\mathrm{de} > 1$, and expanding, yet there is a small sample of compact HII regions with $P_\mathrm{tot,max}/P_\mathrm{de} < 1$ ($\sim$1% of the sample). These mostly reside in galaxy centres ($R_\mathrm{gal}<1$kpc), or, specifically, environments of high gas surface density; log($\Sigma_\mathrm{gas}/\mathrm{M_\odot} \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$)$\sim$2.5 (measured on kpc-scales). Lastly, we compare to a sample of literature measurements for $P_\mathrm{therm}$ and $P_\mathrm{rad}$ to investigate how dominant pressure term transitions over around 5dex in spatial dynamic range and 10 dex in pressure., Comment: 28 pages total, 16+3 figures, and 3 tables. Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the PHANGS-MUSE survey, a programme using the MUSE IFS at the ESO VLT to map 19 massive $(9.4 < \log(M_{*}/M_\odot) < 11.0)$ nearby (D < 20 Mpc) star-forming disc galaxies. The survey consists of 168 MUSE pointings (1'x1' each), a total of nearly 15 Million spectra, covering ~1.5 Million independent spectra. PHANGS-MUSE provides the first IFS view of star formation across different local environments (including galaxy centres, bars, spiral arms) in external galaxies at a median resolution of 50~pc, better than the mean inter-cloud distance in the ionised interstellar medium. This `cloud-scale' resolution allows detailed demographics and characterisations of HII regions and other ionised nebulae. PHANGS-MUSE further delivers a unique view on the associated gas and stellar kinematics, and provides constraints on the star formation history. The PHANGS-MUSE survey is complemented by dedicated ALMA CO(2-1) and multi-band HST observations, therefore allowing us to probe the key stages of the star formation process from molecular clouds to HII regions and star clusters. This paper describes the scientific motivation, sample selection, observational strategy, data reduction and analysis process of the PHANGS-MUSE survey. We present our bespoke automated data-reduction framework, which is built on the reduction recipes provided by ESO, but additionally allows for mosaicking and homogenisation of the point spread function. We further present a detailed quality assessment and a brief illustration of the potential scientific applications of the large set of PHANGS-MUSE data products generated by our data analysis framework. The data cubes and analysis data products described in this paper represent the basis for the first PHANGS-MUSE public data release and are available in the ESO archive and via the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre., Comment: 48 pages, 28 figures, 4 tables, accepted for pub in A&A, Dec 8, 2021. We present an all-sky 90\% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750$c$ and 0.995$c$, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below $2.0\times 10^{-19} {\textrm{cm}}^{-2} {\textrm{s}}^{-1} {\textrm{sr}}^{-1}$ over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles above the Cherenkov threshold and up to $\beta \sim 0.995$ and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of non-relativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles, Comment: Updated to match the published version in PRL

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
A recent time-integrated analysis of a catalog of 110 candidate neutrino sources revealed a cumulative neutrino excess in the data collected by IceCube between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. This excess, inconsistent with the background hypothesis in the Northern hemisphere at the $3.3~\sigma$ level, is associated with four sources: NGC 1068, TXS 0506+056, PKS 1424+240 and GB6 J1542+6129. This letter presents two time-dependent neutrino emission searches on the same data sample and catalog: a point-source search that looks for the most significant time-dependent source of the catalog by combining space, energy and time information of the events, and a population test based on binomial statistics that looks for a cumulative time-dependent neutrino excess from a subset of sources. Compared to previous time-dependent searches, these analyses enable a feature to possibly find multiple flares from a single direction with an unbinned maximum-likelihood method. M87 is found to be the most significant time-dependent source of this catalog at the level of $1.7~\sigma$ post-trial, and TXS 0506+056 is the only source for which two flares are reconstructed. The binomial test reports a cumulative time-dependent neutrino excess in the Northern hemisphere at the level of $3.0~\sigma$ associated with four sources: M87, TXS 0506+056, GB6 J1542+6129 and NGC 1068.

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
A search for Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. This dataset consists of a total $^{136}$Xe exposure of 234.1 kg$\cdot$yr, and includes data with detector upgrades that have improved the energy threshold relative to previous searches. A lower limit of T$_{1/2}^{\rm{^{136}Xe}}>$4.3$\cdot$10$^{24}$ yr at 90\% C.L. on the half-life of the spectral index $n=1$ Majoron decay was obtained, a factor of 3.6 more stringent than the previous limit from EXO-200, corresponding to a constraint on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant of $|\langle g_{ee}^{M}\rangle|$$<(0.4$-$0.9)\cdot10^{-5}$. The lower threshold and the additional data taken resulted in a factor 8.4 improvement for the $n=7$ mode compared to the previous EXO search. This search provides the most stringent limits to-date on the Majoron-emitting decays of $^{136}$Xe with spectral indices $n=1,2,3,$ and 7.
