Abstract

Although the observation of wobbling was once thought to be possibly confined to lutetium isotopes in N≈94 nuclei, the identification of this exotic collective mode in 167Ta has raised the question of the role of the proton Fermi surface with regard to this phenomenon. To investigate this issue, an experiment was performed to populate high-spin states in the N=94 nucleus 169Re. The heavy-ion reaction 55Mn+118Sn was used in conjunction with Gammasphere to detect the emitted γ rays. More than 130 new transitions were added to the 169Re level scheme, including the first identification of the πi13/2 rotational sequence in this nucleus. This configuration is the structure on which all known wobbling sequences are based, but no wobbling band was observed, likely owing to the fact that the πi13/2 sequence is located at a relatively high energy in comparison with the other structures found in 169Re. Nine decay sequences are now established in this nucleus and are described within the context of the cranked shell model. In addition, significant extension of the level scheme of the odd-odd 170Re nucleus was possible and a discussion of the residual interactions for the πh 9/2νi13/2 and πi13/2νi13/2 configurations in this region is given as well.

Abstract

The phenomenon of wobbling can only occur for a nuclear shape with stable triaxial deformation. To date, only a few examples of this exotic collective mode have been observed in lutetium and tantalum isotopes. A search for a wobbling sequence was performed in 171Re to determine if this feature can be observed in Z>73 nuclei. No evidence was found for wobbling; however, an interaction between the πi13/2 sequence and another positive-parity band may give an indication on why wobbling may not occur in this nucleus. The level scheme for 171Re was significantly extended and interpretations for the decay sequences are proposed within the context of the cranked shell model.

Abstract

A new collective band with high dynamic moment of inertia in 158Er at spins beyond band termination has been found in addition to the two previously reported ones. The measured transition quadrupole moments (Qt) of these three bands are very similar. These three bands have been suggested to possess a triaxial strongly deformed shape, based on comparisons with calculations using the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model and with tilted axis cranking calculations using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model. In addition, three collective bands with similar high dynamic moments of inertia, tentatively assigned to 157Ho, have been observed. Thus, it is suggested that all these structures share a common underlying character and that they are most likely associated with triaxial strongly deformed minima which are predicted to be close to the yrast line at spin 50 - 70h.

Abstract

The transition quadrupole moments, Qt, of four weakly populated collective bands up to spin ̃65h in 157,158Er have been measured to be ̃11 eb demonstrating that these sequences are associated with large deformations. However, the data are inconsistent with calculated values from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations that predict the lowest energy triaxial shape to be associated with rotation about the short principal axis. The data appear to favor either a stable triaxial shape rotating about the intermediate axis or, alternatively, a triaxial shape with larger deformation rotating about the short axis. These new results challenge the present understanding of triaxiality in nuclei.

Abstract

Weakly populated band structures have been established in Er156 at low to medium spins, following the Cd114(Ca48,6nγ) reaction at 215 MeV. High-fold γ-ray coincidence data were recorded in a high-statistics experiment with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Bands built on the second 0+ and 2+ (γ-vibrational) states have been established. A large energy staggering between the even- and odd-spin members of the γ-vibrational band suggests a γ-soft nature of this nucleus. An additional band is discussed as being based on a rotationally aligned (νh9/2,f 7/2)2 structure, coexisting with the systematically observed, more favorable (νi13/2)2 aligned structure seen in this mass region.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Chin plays an important role in the perception of facial aesthetics. The chin's horizontal prominence can be improved with autologous fat grafting; however, this method is currently being evaluated as an option to improve this anatomical region. A pilot study was performed in 7 patients to increase the chin volume with autologous abdominal fat grafting. OBJECTIVE: To communicate the results of chin augmentation with autologous abdominal fat grafting. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A pilot, prospective and descriptive study was done in which fat tissue was obtained from the abdominal area and injected into the chin at the subcutaneous tissue level in patients from Dermatology external consultation of General Hospital of Mexico, from May to December 2016. Demographic variables and satisfaction of patients were assessed. A satisfaction questionnaire was applied to each patient at the beginning of the study and at one-month follow-up, with photographic control. RESULTS: Seven subjects were recruited; 4 women, with a mean age of 32.7 years. The mean body mass index was 22.9 kg/m2(19.3-27.9 kg/m2). The average injected volume was 3.85 mL (3-5 mL); 85% of the subjects self-reported as very satisfied and the remaining 15% reported as satisfied with the results immediately after chin augmentation. CONCLUSIONS: The authors of this pilot study propose autologous fat grafting as a low-cost and safe technique for chin augmentation, which could be an alternative to prosthetic chin augmentation. Abstract

In Europe, allergen extracts are standardized based on skin prick wheal size in 20-30 allergic subjects. To understand the biological activity of clinically effective Sublingual immunotherapy, we used this method to determine the biological activity of solution and tablet Timothy grass pollen ( TIM) extracts, compared to an FDA-approved extract (Reference) of 10 000 BAU/ml. Blinded, quadruplicate skin prick tests with concentrate and three serial half-log dilutions allowed the construction of a semilogarithmic regression line per extract. Bioequivalent allergy units ( BAU) values were obtained from the comparison with reference. Extracts and dilutions showed a neat linear dose response (all: R2 > 0.98) in 33 rhinitis patients. Relative potencies: Staloral® 12 000 BAU/ml, Soluprick® 10 300 BAU/ml, Oralair® 8200 BAU, and Grazax® 6200 BAU. Even though all extract concentrates differed in wheal size ( P = 0.01-0.001), Grazax® producing a 25% smaller wheal size than Oralair®, and the biological activity of these clinically effective TIM tablets led in the same range (6200-8200 BAU; 0.92-1.23 cm2). Abstract

Frequencies of cell division stages in suspensions of Prochloron cells, expressed at regular intervals throughout a natural day-night cycle from several colonies of four species of host didemnid, are given. The proportion of dividing cells of Prochloron living symbiotically in colonies of a didemnid, Diplosoma virens, rises from about 4% during the night (20.00-04.00 hrs.) to about 13% in the morning (0,.00-12.00 hrs.), and then falls again in the afternoon. Similiar, though less pronounced, changes were observed among Prochloron cells in two other symbiotic didemnids, Lissoclinum patella and L. voeltzkowi.

Abstract

A pair of transverse wobbling bands is observed in the nucleus 135Pr. The wobbling is characterized by Δl = 1, E2 transitions between the bands, and a decrease in the wobbling energy confirms its transverse nature. Additionally, a transition from transverse wobbling to a three-quasiparticle band comprised of strong magnetic dipole transitions is observed. Abstract

TRPV1, the archetypal member of the vanilloid TRP family, was initially identified as the receptor for capsaicin, the pungent ingredient in hot chili peppers. The receptor has a diverse tissue distribution, with high expression in sensory neurons. TRPV1 is a nonselective cation channel with significant permeability to calcium, protons, and large polyvalent cations. It is the most polymodal TRP channel, being activated by numerous stimuli, including heat, voltage, vanilloids, lipids, and protons/cations. TRPV1 acts as a molecular integrator of physical and chemical stimuli in peripheral nociceptor terminals and plays a critical role in thermal inflammatory hyperalgesia. In addition, TRPV1 may regulate a variety of physiological functions in different organ systems. Various second messenger systems regulate TRPV1 activity, predominantly by serine-threonine phosphorylation. Abstract

In situ precipitation in tailings leaching operations at the Chilean plant has allowed proper control of As from smelter dust in waste electrolyte. The As precipitates are amorphous, linked to jarosite and alpha quartz, with the impurity disseminated through a multivariate matrix of Fe, O, Si, Al, Cu and S. This composition is highly insoluble, stable and non-toxic. Development of the highly efficient, safe, low-cost, flexible system was made possible by the ease of control of tailings pH, which has to be maintained at 1.8-2.0 during solvent extraction: precipitation starts at pH 1.5 and is virtually complete by pH 2. The existence of acid-consuming alkaline gravel in the subsoil guarantees the down-stream precipitation of As present in any overflow, securing the integrity of the system at least until 2014. Abstract

Effective treatment of solid tumors and their metastasis has been elusive, inconsistent and extremely toxic. Moreover, in the past two decades different combination protocols have not changed disease-free survival and total survival. We are studying a different form of therapy based on a nontoxic metabolic approach. This innovative model consists on changing the cellular environment as a mean of controlling malignant cell growth. We tested the effect of different concentrations of ascorbate (50, 100, 250 and 500 mg/dL) and copper sulfate (10 [micro]g/dL) on human breast carcinoma cell proliferation in vitro. Cell proliferation was measured using a colormetric assay (Cell Proliferation Kit II XTT, Boehringer Mannheim). The results of the mean absorbance of the tissue culture at different ascorbate concentrations and a constant copper concentration were as follows: 0.82 [+ or -] 0.03 SE (control), 0.84 [+ or -] 0.02 SE (copper sulfate alone), 0.48 [+ or -] 0.03 SE (ascorbate at 50 mg/dL), 0.21 [+ or -] 0.02 SE (ascorbate at 100 mg/dL), 0.08 [+ or -] 0.01 SE (ascorbate at 250 mg/dL) and 0.60 [+ or -] 0.05 SE (ascorbate at 500 mg/dL). These preliminary results show that a combination of ascorbate and copper sulfate inhibits human breast carcinoma cell proliferation in vitro. This cell proliferation inhibitory effect is directly proportional to the ascorbate concentration. This synergistic chemotherapeutic effect was optimally enhanced when ascorbate was added at a concentration of 250 mg/dL. The ascorbate concentration of 500 mg/dL had a biphasic effect on tumor cell proliferation. This study provides preliminary evidence that ascorbate and copper can be used as biological response modifiers of tumor growth and thus may have potential use as chemotherapeutic agents.
