At times, European nature conservation efforts seem to create obstacles in their own path. One striking example for this is at present coming into focus in East Germany, where the huge crater-like holes remaining from the massive open cast lignite mining activities in the former GDR are to be recultivated and rehabilitated. However, birds have nonetheless already begun to settle and habitats have formed in some parts of the areas in question, so that the designation of the areas as 'Special Protection Areas' (SPAs) and 'Special Areas of Conservation' (SACs) within the meaning of the Birds and Habitats Directives seems indicated. On the other hand, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to realise the intended recultivation and rehabilitation measures in SPAs or SACs. The same dilemma may be encountered in other regions of Europe, especially in Eastern Europe, where former mining, industrial or military sites or similar areas are being subjected to a sea change. In this connection, the question arises of whether such areas in the process of conversion are eligible to be considered as SPAs and SACs at all.

In many regions around the world students with certain immigrant backgrounds underachieve in educational settings. This paper provides a review and meta-analysis on one potential source of the immigrant achievement gap: stereotype threat, a situational predicament that may prevent students to perform up to their full abilities. A meta-analysis of 19 experiments suggests an overall mean effect size of 0.63 (random effects model) in support of stereotype threat theory. The results are complemented by moderator analyses with regard to circulation (published or unpublished research), cultural context (US versus Europe), age of immigrants, type of stereotype threat manipulation, dependent measures, and means for identification of immigrant status; evidence on the role of ethnic identity strength is reviewed. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

We report on quasielastic neutron spectroscopy experiments on ferrocene (bis(η(5)-cyclopentadienyl)iron) in its three different crystalline phases: the disordered monoclinic crystalline phase (T > 164 K), the metastable triclinic phase (T < 164 K), and the stable orthorhombic phase (T < 250 K). The cyclopentadienyl rings in ferrocene are known to undergo rotational reorientations for which the analysis of our large data set suggests partially a revision of the known picture of the dynamics and allows for an extension and completion of previous studies. In the monoclinic phase, guided by structural information, we propose a model for rotational jumps among non-equivalent sites in contrast to the established 5-fold jump rotation model. The new model takes the dynamical disorder into account and allows the cyclopentadienyl rings to reside in two different configurations which are found to be twisted by an angle of approximately 30°. In the triclinic phase, our analysis demands the use of a 2-ring model accounting for crystallographically independent sites with different barriers to rotation. For the orthorhombic phase of ferrocene, we confirm a significantly increased barrier of rotation using neutron backscattering spectroscopy. Our data analysis includes multiple scattering corrections and presents a novel approach of simultaneous analysis of different neutron scattering data by combining elastic and inelastic fixed window temperature scans with energy spectra, providing a very robust and reliable mean of extracting the individual activation energies of overlapping processes.

Opinion leadership describes an individual's tendency to informally influence others' attitudes and overt behaviors. In contrast to contemporary views of opinion leadership as a highly domain-specific trait, this paper introduces a multi-faceted personality trait, generalized opinion leadership (GOL) that characterizes exceptionally influential individuals independent of a specific subject area. Two studies report on the psychometric properties of a scale to assess GOL. Study 1 is based on three independent samples (N = 1,575, N = 1,275, and N = 231) and demonstrates the factorial structure of the instrument and its measurement invariance across sex, age, and educational levels. Study 2 (N = 310) analyzes multitrait-multiinformant data to highlight the scale's discriminant validity with regard to innovativeness and trendsetting.

Extracts obtained by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) from industrial raw materials, namely single strength apple juices, and concentrates and aromas made thereof (each n = 31, from one production line; origin Poland, Germany, Turkey, Romania and China), as well as commercially available juices (n = 27), were analysed by standard controlled capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HRGC–MS). During the technological processing from juice to the aroma, no qualitative changes in the apple aroma profile were observed. Major constituents of the juices and aromas under study were found to be 1-hexanol (juice, 0.06–5.9 mg/l; aroma, 47–685 mg/l), 1-butanol (juice, 0.1–4.7 mg/l; aroma, 17–370 mg/l); E-2-hexenol (juice, 0.01–3.4 mg/l; aroma, 12–300 mg/l); E-2-hexenal (juice, 0–3.0 mg/l; aroma 0–470 mg/l), and butyl acetate (juice, 0–1.7 mg/l; aroma, 0–165 mg/l). By far the major component of the apple juice concentrates under study was furfural (2.4–56 mg/kg). The observed occurrence of 3-methyl-1-butanol (juice, 0.01–2.1 mg/l; aroma, 1.5–134 mg/l) and, in part, its acetate (juice, 0–0.3 mg/l; aroma, 0–3.3 mg/l), both known not to be genuine apple constituents, was obviously caused by fermentative effects in the course of industrial juice production. In addition, on-line capillary gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry was used in the combustion (C) and the pyrolysis (P) modes (HRGC–C/P–IRMS) for the determination of δ13CV-PDB and δ2HV-SMOW values of selected apple flavour constituents to check potential isotope discrimination during distillative aroma production. As shown by means of the representative examples of E-2-hexenal, 1-hexanol and E-2-hexenol, their δ2HV-SMOW values were slightly depleted. However, authenticity assessment by stable IRMS will not be influenced by this effect.

Zusammenfassung. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag wird über die Entwicklung eines umfassenden Fragebogens zum Leseerleben berichtet. Eine Untersuchung zur Itemselektion anhand einer studentischen Stichprobe ergibt 77 Items, die sich auf die folgenden 14 Dimensionen verteilen: Aufmerksamkeitsfokussierung, Aufgehen im Text, Vorstellbarkeit/Anschaulichkeit, Räumliches Dabeisein, Rezeptionsbeendigung, Spannung, Emotionale Beteiligung, Allgemeines Lesevergnügen, Identifikation, Parasoziale Interaktion, Kognitives Involvement, Thematisches Interesse, Analysierende Rezeption, Leichtigkeit des kognitiven Zugangs. Die zugehörigen internen Konsistenzen liegen in einem zufrieden stellenden bis sehr guten Bereich.

We report on a new achievement which allows increasing the signal-to-noise ratio of reactor backscattering spectrometers by more than one order of magnitude by sacrificing at most 50% of the count rate. This method was recently tested on the backscattering instrument IN16B at ILL, where signal-to-noise ratios of more than 10 000 for standard samples and up to 40 000 for strong scatterers were measured with only 37% reduction in intensity. The described method is applicable at any reactor backscattering spectrometer equipped with a so-called background chopper which can optionally function as a pulse suppression chopper and presents a major advancement for high energy resolution spectroscopy with neutrons.

We have studied neutron diffuse scattering in a Sr(0.61)Ba(0.39)Nb(2)O(6) single crystal by neutron backscattering at sub-μeV energy resolution. We can identify two response components with transverse polarization: an elastic (resolution limited) central peak, which monotonically increases with decreasing temperature, and a quasielastic central peak, having a maximum intensity around the ferroelectric phase transition close to 350 K. In contrast to previous neutron experiments on this and other relaxor materials, we were able to observe a temperature dependence of the characteristic frequency of these fluctuations, obeying the same Vogel-Fulcher law as the dynamic part of the dielectric permittivity of this material. In this way our findings provide a first direct link between the Vogel-Fulcher-type frequency dependence of dielectric permittivity and dynamic nanoscale lattice modulations with a transverse correlation length of about 5-10 unit cells.

The body burden of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like (dl-PCBs) and non-dioxin-like (ndl-PCBs) polychlorinated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was determined in blood samples from 70 subjects between 4 and 76 years old. The participants of the study were recruited in the neighborhood of a reclamation plant located in a rural area in Southern Germany. The median concentrations (95th percentiles in parentheses), expressed as WHO 2005 -TEQ (toxic equivalents), for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs were 4.5 (17.9) pg g −1 l.w. and 2.6 (13.2) pg g −1 l.w., respectively. The dl-PCBs contributed 40% of the total TEQ (median values), and the most abundant congener was PCB 156. Combined, the sum of the 6 non-dioxin-like PCBs had a median of 0.773 μg L −1 and a 95th percentile of 4.895 μg L −1 . For the six tetra to hepta PBDE congeners, the median was 1.8 ng g −1 l.w. (95th percentile: 16.2 ng g −1 l.w.). None of our study subjects had a body burden that exceeded the biomonitoring equivalents for dioxins or PBDE congener 99 or the human biomonitoring values for ndl-PCBs. Likewise the study group did not exceed German reference values or values obtained in similar investigations. Overall, our study did not exhibit elevated internal exposures. The results also hint further decreasing tendencies for PCDD/Fs, PCBs, and PBDEs in Germany and demonstrates that people in the vicinity of a reclamation plant with no indication of an environmental contamination did not exhibit elevated internal exposures.

We investigate the influence of addition of hydrophilic and amphiphilic polymer on percolation behavior and micellar interactions in AOT-based water-in-oil droplet microemulsions. We focus on two series of samples having constant molar water to surfactant ratio W = 20 and constant droplet volume fraction Φ = 30%, respectively. From dielectric spectroscopy experiments, we extract the bending rigidity of the surfactant shell by percolation temperature measurements. Depending on droplet size, we find stabilization and destabilization of the surfactant shell upon addition of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (Mn = 3100 g mol(-1)) and amphiphilic poly(styrene)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymer with comparable length of the hydrophilic block. Complementary small angle X-ray scattering experiments corroborate the finding of stabilization for smaller droplets and destabilization of larger droplets. Subsequent analysis of dielectric spectra enables us to extract detailed information about micellar interactions and clustering by evaluating the dielectric high frequency shell relaxation. We interpret the observed results as a possible modification of the inter-droplet charge transfer efficiency by addition of PEG polymer, while the amphiphilic polymer shows a comparable, but dampened effect.

The present research examined the role of a fictional character's trustworthiness on narrative persuasion. The authors suggest that trustworthiness indicators within the story, rather than paratextual cues (fact–fiction labeling) affect persuasive outcomes. An experiment on fuel-efficient driving behavior (green driving) was conducted, with behavioral intentions and self-reported behavior (3 weeks postexposure) as dependent variables. A story with a trustworthy character who introduced green driving behavior led to stronger intentions to engage in fuel-efficient driving among car owners than a story with a less trustworthy character who provided the same information or a control story. Low character trustworthiness was particularly detrimental to story-consistent intentions and behavior for recipients who were not deeply immersed into the story world (low narrative presence).

We study the percolation behavior of the water-in-oil (w/o) droplet phase of AOT (sodium bis[2-ethylhexyl] sulfosuccinate)-based microemulsions with different alkylbenzenes (toluene, ethylbenzene, butylbenzene or octylbenzene) as oil phase. We use microemulsions of varying composition with molar water to surfactant ratios 0 ⩽ W ⩽ 50 and droplet (water plus surfactant) volume fractions 10% ⩽ ϕ ⩽ 50%. Using dielectric spectroscopy, a percolation transition is observed in w/o microemulsions with butylbenzene or octylbenzene. With increasing molecular weight of the alkylbenzene, the percolation temperature T P decreases. The structure of the microemulsions is determined by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). With increasing molar weight of the alkylbenzene, the stability range of the L 2 droplet phase extends to higher W . The larger amount of solubilizable water can be related to variable oil penetration of the AOT monolayer, which affects the spontaneous curvature of the surfactant shell.

Research on the impact of violence in the mass media dates back to the Payne Fund Studies in the 1930s which focused on the effects of motion pictures on children. Public and scientific interest in this topic has increased with the widespread accessibility of TV in the 1950s and 1960s and the rise of computer games in the 1980s and 1990s. A number of content analyses conducted throughout the years indicate that the depiction of physical violence is widespread in mass media, e.g., in feature films, comics, animation series, TV news, popular music, and computer games. In early adolescence, the time spent using the Internet and video games is higher than in any other present-day age group. Due to age-inappropriate web and gaming content, the impact of new media use on teenagers is a matter of public and scientific concern. Based on current theories on inappropriate media use, a study was conducted that comprised 205 adolescents aged 10-14 years (Md = 13). Individuals were identified who showed clinically relevant problem behavior according to the problem scales of the Youth Self Report (YSR). Online gaming, communicational Internet use, and playing first-person shooters were predictive of externalizing behavior problems (aggression, delinquency). Playing online role-playing games was predictive of internalizing problem behavior (including withdrawal and anxiety). Parent-child communication about Internet activities was negatively related to problem behavior.

In many situations red is associated with hazard and danger. As a consequence, it was expected that task-irrelevant color cues in online environments would affect risk-taking behaviors. This assumption was tested in two web-based experiments. The first study (N = 383) demonstrated that in risky choice dilemmas respondents preferred the less risky option when the displayed university logo was in red (versus gray); but only when both choice alternatives were at least moderately risky. The second study (N = 144) replicated these results with a behavioral outcome: Respondents showed more cautious behavior in a web-based game when the focal stimuli were colored red (versus blue). Together, these findings demonstrate that variations in the color design of a computerized environment affect risk taking: Red color leads to more conservative choices and behaviors.

Authenticity assessment of gamma-decalactone (1) and delta-decalactone (2) from peach (Prunus persica var. persica), apricot (Prunus armeniaca), and nectarine (Prunus persica var. nectarina) was performed using gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) in the combustion (C) and pyrolysis (P) mode. In addition, commercially available synthetic (nature-identical) 1 and 2 as well as biotechnologically produced samples (declared to be "natural") were characterized by their delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) and delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) values. For the Prunus fruits under study, rather narrow ranges of delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) data of 1, varying from - 34.6 per thousand to - 38.4 per thousand and -160 per thousand to -206 per thousand, respectively, were obtained. Synthetic references of 1 showed delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) data ranging from -27.4 per thousand to -28.3 per thousand and -151 per thousand to -184 per thousand, respectively. Samples of 1 declared to be "natural" exhibited ranges from -28.1 per thousand to -29.2 per thousand and -192 per thousand to -286 per thousand for delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW), respectively. For 2 from peach, apricot, and nectarine, delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) values ranging from -34.0 per thousand to -37.9 per thousand were determined; the delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) values ranged from -171 per thousand to -228 per thousand. The delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) data for synthetic 2 were -28.2 per thousand and -171 per thousand, respectively, that is, similar to those of 2 from "natural" origin, ranging from -27.7 per thousand to -30.1 per thousand and -185 per thousand to -230 per thousand for delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW), respectively. GC-C/P-IRMS allowed clear-cut analytical differentiation of the synthetic and "ex-plant" origin of 1 and 2, whereas narrow ranges of delta(13)C(V)(-)(PDB) and delta(2)H(V)(-)(SMOW) data were found for samples of synthetic and "natural" origin.

By use of extracts prepared by liquid-liquid separation of the volatiles from self-prepared juices of pineapple fruits (Ananas comosus) (n = 14) as well as commercial pineapple recovery aromas/water phases (n = 3), on-line capillary gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry was employed in the combustion (C) and the pyrolysis (P) modes (HRGC-C/P-IRMS) to determine the delta(13)C(VPDB) and delta(2)H(VSMOW) values of selected pineapple flavor constituents. In addition to methyl 2-methylbutanoate 1, ethyl 2-methylbutanoate 2, methyl hexanoate 3, ethyl hexanoate 4, and 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-3[2H]-furanone 5, each originating from the fruit, the delta(13)C(VPDB) and delta(2)H(VSMOW) data of commercial synthetic 1-5 and "natural" (biotechnologically derived) 1-4 were determined. With delta(13)C(VPDB) data of pineapple volatiles 1-4 varying from -12.8 to -24.4 per thousand, the range expected for CAM metabolism was observed. Compound 5 showed higher depletion from -20.9 to -28.6 per thousand. A similar situation was given for the delta(2)H(VSMOW) values of 3-5 from pineapple ranging from -118 to -191 per thousand, whereas 1 and 2 showed higher depleted values from -184 to -263 per thousand. In nearly all cases, analytical differentiation of 1-5 from pineapple and natural as well as synthetic origin was possible. In general, natural and synthetic 1-5 exhibited delta(13)C(VPDB) data ranging from -11.8 to -32.2 per thousand and -22.7 to -35.9 per thousand, respectively. Their delta(2)H(VSMOW) data were in the range from -242 to -323 per thousand and -49 to -163 per thousand, respectively.

The quantum mechanical splitting of states by interaction of a magnetic moment with an external magnetic field is well known, e.g., as Zeeman effect in optical transitions, and is also often seen in magnetic neutron scattering. We report excitations observed in inelastic neutron spectroscopy on the redox-responsive polymer poly(vinylferrocene). They are interpreted as splitting of the electronic ground state in the organometallic ferrocene units attached to the polymer chain where a magnetic moment is created by oxidation. In a second experiment using high resolution neutron backscattering spectroscopy we observe the hyperfine splitting, i.e., interaction of nuclear magnetic moments with external magnetic fields leading to sub-μeV excitations observable in incoherent neutron spin-flip scattering on hydrogen and vanadium nuclei.

Ferrocene-containing polymers are an important member in the class of redox- responsive polymers, changing e.g. their solubility or conformation upon external stimuli. We present a study of their vibrational spectra using inelastic neutron scattering, focusing on the central building block of these polymers, the organometallic ferrocene complex. The vibrational modes of a bulk ferrocene sample are compared to those of poly(vinylferrocene), poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) and poly(ferrocenylmethylsilane). In the former polymer, the ferrocene complex is laterally attached to the polymer chain and the vibrational spectrum shows a slight shift and broadening of the fingerprint modes in the range of 100-800 cm−1 except for the ring-metal-ring stretching mode which was not detectable anymore. The latter two polymers, where the ferrocene complex is part of the polymer backbone, exhibit larger differences to the vibrational spectrum of bulk ferrocene. Moreover, several contributions to the spectra caused by methyl groups in these polymers could be identified. In order to study the influence of oxidation on ferrocene and redox-responsive polymers, we investigated the ionic compound ferrocenium triiodide and oxidized poly(vinylferrocene). It is observed that the weakening of the η5-complex bond by a missing electron leads to a significant shift of the fingerprint modes to lower frequencies.

Designing next-generation fuel cell and filtration devices requires the development of nanoporous materials that allow rapid and reversible uptake and directed transport of water molecules. Here, we combine neutron spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to demonstrate rapid transport of molecular H2O through nanometer-sized voids ordered within the layers of crystalline carbon nitride with a polytriazine imide structure. The transport mechanism involves a sequence of molecular orientation reversals directed by hydrogen-bonding interactions as the neutral molecules traverse the interlayer gap and pass through the intralayer voids that show similarities with the transport of water through transmembrane aquaporin channels in biological systems. The results suggest that nanoporous layered carbon nitrides can be useful for developing high-performance membranes.
