Field observations and laboratory experiments were conducted on hatchlings of the northern diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), a species that may overwinter within its natal nest in northern parts of its range. Hatchlings from 6 of 21 nests overwintered terrestrially, yet despite sub-zero temperatures (to -4.4[degrees]C) in the nest, winter mortality was low. Laboratory studies showed that cold-acclimated hatchlings had low rates of evaporative water loss (2.8 mg [g.sup.-1] [d.sup.-1]) relative to other species, which may prevent excessive dehydration during hibernation. Hatchlings supercooled deeply (to -15.1 [degrees]C) but were highly susceptible to inoculative freezing by ice and ice nucleating agents, which occur in their nest environment. Therefore, freeze avoidance is not a viable cold hardiness strategy in these turtles. However, hatchlings survived the freezing of their tissues (-2.5[degrees]C for at least 24 h), suggesting that these turtles may survive brief chilling episodes in the nest by tolerating freezing.

As judged by x-ray-powder patterns and crystallographic data, a 10–50% substitution of Al on the Cu site of CeCuGe prefers to crystallize in a hexagonal ZrBeSi-type structure with space group P6 3 /mmc rather than AlB 2 -type structure with space group P6/mmm. The substitution of Cu by Al in CeCu 1− x Al x Ge was found to be able to attenuate the localized Ce-4f moments. As determined from the electrical-resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, both the ferromagnetic transition temperature T c value and the magnitude of the spontaneous magnetization in the series CeCu 1− x Al x Ge reflect the decreasing strength of exchange interactions with the Al concentration. In addition, the resistivity data in CeCu 1− x Al x Ge revealed the simultaneous contributions of exchange interactions, Kondo effects, crystal field effects and phonons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Soft Catch Gun at Picatinny Arsenal is regularly used for component testing. Most shots contain accelerometers which record accelerations as a function of time. Statistics of accelerometer data indicate that the muzzle exit accelerations are, on average, higher than tactical firings. For that reason, Soft Catch Gun tests with unusually high accelerations may not be scored for Lot Acceptance Tests (LAT) by some customers. The 95/50 Normal Tolerance Limit (NTL) is proposed as a means of determining which test results should be scored. This paper presents comparisons of Shock Response Spectra (SRS) used for the 95/50 scoring criteria. Abstract: In–Sn–Zn–O (ITZO) and In–Zn–Sn–O (IZTO) films were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by magnetron co-sputtering using two cathodes (DC, RF) at room temperature. In the case of the ITZO films, their resistivity increased with increasing Zn content, indicating that the impurity Zn atoms did not contribute to carrier generation. However, it can be confirmed that the introduction of the Zn atoms effectively improved both the surface morphology and mechanical properties measured by the bending test. On the other hand, in the case of the IZTO films, the lowest resistivity (3.17×10−4 Ω cm) was obtained for the film deposited at a SnO2 RF power of 40 W, which was due to the increase of the carrier density. It can be said that impurity Sn atom was an effective dopant for IZO. However, the introduction of Sn atoms degraded both the surface uniformity and mechanical properties of the films. Abstract: The optical properties of the populated ZnCdSe/ZnSe quantum dots have been studied by photoluminescence spectra measured with different laser excitation apertures at temperatures from 22 to 300K. The differences of spectral features between small and large excitation spot suggest the existence of quantum dot size fluctuation in the system. The temperature evolution of photoluminescence spectral features revealed that two types of quantum dots with different densities and sizes coexist in ZnCdSe/ZnSe system. The energy spacings of the two kinds of quantum dot emissions are about 50meV at various temperatures. The thermally activated lateral transfer processes of carriers populated in the two sorts of quantum dots are investigated by temperature dependences of spectral intensities. Nanoporous poly(methyl silsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) was obtained by sintering organic/inorganic nanohybrids. The porogen was cyclosiloxane with four poly(ethylene glycol) arms for better miscibility with PMSSQ. As the porogen content in the hybrid increased up to 30 vol%, the porosity of the calcined PMSSQ film increased up to 24%, and the k values decreased as low as 2.12. However, the interconnected pore structure was observed at the porogen content above 25 vol%. The miscibility was improved compared to poly(caprolactone)-based porogens and the pore size was indistinguishable even at SEM resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
