Abstract

Research was conducted to characterize an inverted repeat with zero nucleotides in the spacer (IRO, 5'GGGTCA CGAACT-3') element as a functional retinoic acid response element. The objective was to gain an insight into the regulatory mechanisms underlying the testis-specific expression of the TR2 gene and the potential role of retinoic acid in modulating its expression. Results demonstrate the presence of a natural retinoic acid response element of the IRO type and indicate a likely cross-talk between nuclear orphan receptor TR2-11 and retinoic acid receptor-retinoid X receptor families.

Abstract

A study on C60 fullerenes and fullerene derivatives was conducted to investigate structures and aggregation behavior of a starlike ionomer, C60[(CH2)nSO3Na]6 with n=4 in water solutions. Small angle neutron scattering and small angle X-ray scattering techniques were employed in the study. Interparticle interactions between the aggregates of star ionomers were observed that proved to be much weaker and insensitive to the temperature change for the concentrations investigated. Other findings are discussed.

Abstract

GaN films implanted with Mg and Be ions were studied for optical and structural characteristics. Annealed Mg implanted GaN showed low temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of 356 nm near band edge emission, and a 528 nm green band deep level emission. The 528 nm green band emission may be attributed to the Mg implantation induced clustering defect.

Abstract

Expression of the mouse orphan nuclear receptor TR2-11-f has a strongly suppressive influence on reporter genes containing the DR4 of CRABP-I promoter. This is not the case with expression of TR2-11-t. TR2-11-f preferentially forms homodimers on this repeated sequence, and the residues in both repeats are vital for protein binding. TR2-11 receptors may exert their biological activities by interacting with different transcription factors.

Abstract

The investigation into the lithium diffusion in active electrode materials is especially interesting since it is directly connected with electrochemical performance of lithium‐ion battery. Quasi‐elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is a powerful experimental tool to study lithium diffusion dynamics. Here, Li0.99V0.01FePO4 (LFPV) cathode material is investigated using QENS technique. The QENS data showed that lithium diffusion can be well described in LFPV using a jump diffusion model. The Li self‐diffusion coefficient in LFPV material was estimated to be ~3 × 10−7 cm2/s at T = 600 K. This result is about 108 times faster than previous reports using electrochemical measurements, but similar to the molecular dynamic simulation. Abstract

Three long straight sections with double-mini beta-y lattice were created in the Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) for which the effects of focusing elements and phase shifters between the collinear undulators result in incorrect calculations of the brilliance while assuming a Gaussian-approximation. Therefore, an on-axis Wigner distribution function (WDF), which includes effects of wave phenomena, is a natural way to measure the intensity of synchrotron radiation and is used in this article as the definition of brilliance., Proceedings of the 8th Int. Abstract

An extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is performed to investigate exchange bias in a novel model of a nanoparticle consisting of a ferromagnetic (FM) core and an amorphous magnetic (AM) shell. The magnetic glassy ordering of the AM shell governed by random magnetic anisotropy (RMA) is shown to be responsible for the unidirectional anisotropy to the FM core. Our MC results show that, while the bias field and coercivity exhibit a strong dependence on RMA strength, which looks like that on the antiferromagnetic (AFM) thickness in traditional FM/AFM bilayers, they are independent of AM thickness. However, the bias field and coercivity abruptly change with increasing small core size and get saturated for a large enough core size. The cooling field and temperature dependencies show the peculiar sign inversion of the bias field. Our study supports the argument that the exchange bias observed in some magnetic nanoparticles or nanocrystallined alloys is not necessarily due to the presence of an AFM phase. Abstract

Although in vitro studies and investigations in animal models and small clinical populations have suggested that ceramides may represent an intermediate link between overnutrition and certain pathological mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD), no prospective studies have investigated the association between plasma ceramides and risk of CVD.The study population consisted of 980 participants from the PREDIMED trial (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea), including 230 incident cases of CVD and 787 randomly selected participants at baseline (including 37 overlapping cases) followed for ?7.4 years. Participants were randomized to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts, or a control diet. Plasma ceramide concentrations were measured on a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry metabolomics platform. The primary outcome was a composite of nonfatal acute myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or cardiovascular death. Hazard ratios were estimated with weighted Cox regression models using Barlow weights to account for the case-cohort design.The multivariable hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) comparing the extreme quartiles of plasma concentrations of C16:0, C22:0, C24:0, and C24:1 ceramides were 2.39 (1.49-3.83, Ptrend<0.001), 1.91 (1.21-3.01, Ptrend=0.003), 1.97 (1.21-3.20, Ptrend=0.004), and 1.73 (1.09-2.74, Ptrend=0.011), respectively. The ceramide score, calculated as a weighted sum of concentrations of four ceramides, was associated with a 2.18-fold higher risk of CVD across extreme quartiles (HR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.36-3.49; Ptrend<0.001).
