This year's bibliography has collected a selection of the wide range of scholarly activity in the field and divides resources into sections ac cording to type: books, articles in collections, journal articles (other than those appearing in American Periodicals), and dissertation ab stracts. As evidenced by the wide variety of sources listed here, the field of periodical research remains one of the most fruitful interdisci plinary fields in the academy today.

Stem cell-based approaches to regenerative medicine are promising, but face several serious unsolved problems before their clinical use becomes possible. These include the reliable production and expansion of stem cells, reliable differentiation, avoidance of tumorigenicity, efficient integration into the host, population control within the host, and monitoring of cell behavior once integrated. Synthetic biology – the engineering of new, designed functions into cells – offers potential solutions to each of these problems (albeit with possibly additional issues of regulation and public acceptance). This potential of the technique is illustrated in this chapter by discussing how existing synthetic systems could be adapted for stem cell use. This poster outlines the preliminarily findings of the EDITS study: an inquiry into the digital information habits of senior citizens. The research presented here will focus on the adoption of ereading technology by seniors in order to determine the habits and attitudes, motivations, and barriers experienced by this demographic. Employing semi-structured interviews and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study aims to investigate one element of the digital divide that sometimes goes unnoticed: age. Despite ingrained habits based on print, findings show motivations, such as convenience, contribute to the adoption of ereading by seniors.

Opening this year's very successful Practical Diabetes International Conference on the future of diabetic foot care, Dr Michael Edmonds (Kings College Hospital, London, UK), Joint Organising Chair of the meeting, pointed out that, assuming the nearly four hundred delegates present had on average five years clinical experience each, this added up to over 2,000 years' shared clinical experience and represented “a major resource within these four walls”.

A competitive environment forces the farmer constantly to adopt new and more-intensive production methods aiming at lowering costs and increasing yields. At debate is whether this intensification of production has an adverse impact on animal health and welfare. We investigated this issue by using cointegration analysis (a new tool used in time series analysis). We introduce cointegration analysis by applying the method in an epidemiological study of dairy-cow mortality. Two long-run epidemiological relations are identified: (i) a physiological relation (where increasing consumption of concentrates corresponded to increasing milk yield and mortality) and (ii) a physical relation (which illustrated that higher mortality was closely related to a higher growth rate of the average herd size, current investments in dairy farming, and higher milk yield). We concluded that a higher level of physiological stress due to higher yield and concentrate consumption has led to increased mortality. Furthermore, changes in the physical environment due to increased mechanisation and larger herd sizes have contributed to less attention per cow and increased mortality.

This article explores adoption rates of the Ebook amongst Historians at the University of Western Ontario. Employing the first stage of Rogers’ Innovation-Decision Process, the researchers examine the role that social networks play in this process and what effect the Historians’ desire for the possibility of serendipity has on electronic research.Cet article explore le taux d’adoption des livres numériques chez les historiens à l’Université Western Ontario. À l’aide du premier stade du processus innovation-décision de Rogers, on examine le rôle des réseaux sociaux dans ce processus ainsi que les effets sur la recherche électronique qu’a le désir des historiens à s’ouvrir à la serendipité.

The move towards the digital humanities will see a growing interest in digital tools, such as Ebooks. This study examines the opinions and perception of historians about how Ebooks and other digital tools affect the research process. Findings indicate that historians are concerned that the digital environment reduces the possibility of chance encounters with a text. They continue to recreate the environment that encourages serendipity to occur within their field, and would readily welcome tools that facilitate this.Le passage vers les humanités numériques ira en grandissant, grâce à la popularité des outils électroniques et des livres électroniques particulièrement. Cette étude examine les opinions et les perceptions des historiens quant aux livres électroniques et autres outils numériques dans le cadre de leur processus de recherche. Les résultats indiquent que les historiens se soucient du fait que l’environnement électronique puisse réduire les possibilités de découvertes fortuites dans les texte. Ils continuent de récréer un environnement qui suscite la sérendipité dans leur domaine et adopteraient volontiers un outil qui leur faciliterait la tâche à cet égard.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem System zur Automatisierung von öffentlichen und halböffentlichen Räumen mit dem Fokus auf dem Schutz der Privatsphäre der Nutzer. Herkömmliche Systeme gefährden die Privatsphäre der Nutzer, da sie zur Erfüllung ihrer Steuerungsaufgaben Nutzerdaten zentral erfassen müssen und somit alle Nutzerdaten auch zentral abrufbar sind. Ein zuverlässiger Schutz der Privatsphäre kann hingegen in vollständig dezentralen Systemen gewährleistet werden, da diese keine zentrale Datenerfassung benötigen und daher keinen Zugriff auf Nutzerdaten erlauben. Dies Arbeit beschreibt den Aufbau solcher dezentralen Systeme zur Automatisierung von öffentlichen und halböffentlichen Räumen und weißt deren grundsätzliche Funktionstüchtigkeit nach.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were important beliefs about “spoiling” an infant that might help early interventionists identify families at risk of misunderstanding their infant's basic developmental needs. A questionnaire about spoiling was completed by 303 parents. On the basis of two questions, three types of spoiling beliefs were defined. Subsequent questions assessed parents' definitions of spoiling and its impact on future development. Demographic information was also obtained. When the three spoiling types were compared, highly significant differences emerged in terms of demographics, definitions of spoiling, and belief about spoiling's impact on development, supporting “spoiling” as an emerging developmental construct.

This study investigates the strategic behaviour of food industry firms. Its two goals are to: (i) characterise strategies being employed; and (ii) identify distinct approaches to information-sharing Data from an interview-format survey of Danish food industry firms are used to characterise strategy at two levels: 11 “strategic orientations”; each of which is composed of 3-6 of a total 57 “strategic actions”. Principal components were identified and two complementary cluster analysis techniques were used to assemble clusters that are composed of firms either with distinct strategies, or sets of strategies occurring in distinct combinations. Eight clusters emerge, with reasonable procedural performance. The clusters are distinct in a surprisingly large number of ways, including their strategies for market share, pricing, approach and response to regulation, exports and use of retailers’ own-label brands. Information-sharing strategies are closely linked to both marketing strategy and regulation response/anticipation. Individual clusters identify distinct sets of behaviour regarding information-sharing up and/or down the value chain, their approach to quality and other aspects of market segmentation, targeting of export markets, and willingness to compete on price. Clusters’ distinct strategies regarding regulation featured anticipation, as opposed to several diverse means of passing on compliance costs: to buyers or to sellers. Such activities were linked to information-sharing strategies in different ways by different clusters.
