Aim: To identify loci associated with chronic periodontitis through a genome-wide association study (GWAS)., Materials and Methods: A GWAS was performed in 4032 individuals of two independent cross-sectional studies of West Pomerania (SHIP n = 3365 and SHIP-TREND n = 667) with different periodontal case definitions. Samples were genotyped with the Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human SNP Array 6.0 or the Illumina Human Omni 2.5 array. Imputation of the HapMap as well as the 1000 Genome-based autosomal and X-chromosomal genotypes and short insertions and deletions (INDELs) was performed in both cohorts. Finally, more than 17 million SNPs and short INDELs were analysed., Results: No genome-wide significant associations were found for any periodontitis case definition, regardless of whether individuals aged >60 years where excluded or not. Despite no single SNP association reached genome-wide significance, the proportion of variance explained by additive effects of all common SNPs was around 23% for mean proximal attachment loss. Excluding subjects aged >60 years increased the explained variance to 34%., Conclusions: No single SNPs were found to be genome-wide significantly associated with chronic periodontitis in this study., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Aim. Dental biofilms play a major role in the pathogenesis of many dental diseases. In this study, we evaluated the synergistic effect of atmospheric pressure plasma and different agents in dentistry on the reduction of biofilms. Methods and Results. We used monospecies (S. mutans) and multispecies dental biofilm models grown on titanium discs in vitro. After treatment with one of the agents, the biofilms were treated with plasma. Efficacy of treatment was determined by the number of colony forming units (CFU) and by live-dead staining. For S. mutans biofilms no colonies could be detected after treatment with NaOCl or H2O2. For multispecies biofilms the combination with plasma achieved a higher CFU reduction than each agent alone. We found an additive antimicrobial effect between argon plasma and agents irrespective of the treatment order with cultivation technique. For EDTA and octenidine, antimicrobial efficacy assessed by live-dead staining differed significantly between the two treatment orders (P < 0.05). Conclusions. The effective treatment of dental biofilms on titanium discs with atmospheric pressure plasma could be increased by adding agents in vitro.

Aim: Interest in human saliva proteomics for disease-specific biomarker screening increased in the last decade. We used whole saliva samples from periodontally healthy and diseased subjects with chronic periodontitis to screen for disease-associated differences in the protein pattern., Material and Methods: We selected 20 periodontally healthy and 20 periodontally diseased subjects from the population-based cross-sectional Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-2 and SHIP-Trend). Saliva collection was performed with commercially available Salivette(®) (Sarstedt, Nümbrecht, Germany). Whole saliva proteins were analysed after trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation and proteolytic digestion with trypsin by LC-MS/MS. MS-data were analysed and quantified using the Rosetta Elucidator software package., Results: In whole saliva we identified 344 human protein groups across all samples. For label free quantitation we only considered 152 proteins identified with more than one unique peptide. In total, 20 proteins showed 1.5-fold difference in abundance between controls and patients (p < 0.05); the majority of these proteins showed higher abundance in the periodontally diseased subjects. Functional annotation of proteins linked the periodontally diseased status with acute phase response and inflammatory processes., Conclusion: Label free proteomic analysis of whole saliva is a powerful tool to characterize the periodontal disease status and differentiate between healthy and periodontally diseased subjects., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background: A dentition of at least 20 teeth is associated with sufficient masticatory efficiency and is a stated health goal of the World Health Organisation. We examined whether subjects with missing, unreplaced teeth had an increased mortality risk., Methods: We used data prospectively collected from those participants in the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania who had fewer than 20 remaining teeth, resulting in a sample of 1803 participants with a median age of 64 years. Of those, 188 subjects had 9 or more unreplaced teeth. During a median follow-up period of 9.9 years, 362 subjects died, 128 of whom of cardiovascular causes., Results: We found that having 9 or more unreplaced teeth was related to all-cause mortality (rate ratio 1.53, 95% CI: 1.11-2.10; adjusted for variables according to causal diagrams: remaining teeth, age, sex, education, income, marital status, partnership, and oral health behaviour) and cardiovascular mortality (rate ratio 1.94, 95% CI: 1.15-3.25). When adjusting not only for the variables according to causal diagrams but also for smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, the rate ratio was 1.43 (95% CI: 1.05-1.96) for all-cause mortality and 1.88 (95% CI: 1.10-3.21) for cardiovascular mortality., Conclusions: A reduced, unrestored dentition is associated with increased mortality risk. Objectives: To assess changes in the number of functioning teeth (filled and sound teeth, FS-T index) from 1989/1992 to 2005 in West and East Germany and to evaluate survey- and region-specific associations between sociodemographic and behavioral risk factors and the FS-T index., Methods: Within the German Oral Health Studies, random samples from 35-44-year-olds were drawn in 1989, 1992, 1997 and 2005. The FS-T index and a questionnaire with socioeconomic and behavioral items were assessed. Negative binomial regression models were evaluated, including all sociodemographic and behavioral factors simultaneously as independent variables., Results: For West Germany, median FS-T index increased by 3 teeth between 1989 and 2005 (Ptrend < 0.001). In East Germans, FS-T index was similar in 1992 and 1997 (median, 24), but increased by one tooth until 2005 (Ptrend < 0.001). For West and East Germany, middle and high school education were significantly associated with higher FS-T indices in all surveys, although effects were most pronounced in 2005. Being married, reporting regular dental visits and good oral hygiene were significantly related to a higher number of functioning teeth in at least one survey year., Conclusions: Dental health assessed as the number of functioning teeth improved between 1989/92 and 2005 in both German parts and across all educational levels. Aim: To examine the associations between factors of socio-economic status (SES), systemic inflammation and the progression of periodontitis and incidence of tooth loss., Material and Methods: Data of 2566 participants from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) with a 5-year follow-up were analysed. We evaluated attachment loss and tooth loss with regard to social variables including education, income, marital status and related risks such as smoking and obesity., Results: Socio-economic factors were associated with the progression of attachment level and tooth loss during the follow-up period. Low education and low income were associated with tooth loss (incidence risk ratio IRR 1.63, p < 0.001 and 1.25, p < 0.001 respectively) and also progression of mean clinical attachment level (p < 0.010 and p = 0.046 respectively). SES as well as smoking and obesity were also associated with increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) with effect modifications between SES factors and CRP, also between gender and marital status. Tooth loss was associated with disadvantageous SES, particularly under conditions of high CRP levels (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The progression of periodontal disease is influenced by socio-economic factors. Effect modifications of socio-behavioural factors by CRP indicate that under conditions of systemic inflammation adverse SES effects may be aggravated., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)

Objectives: To compare the prevalence of periodontal disease between two randomly selected population-based studies (the Oral Infections and Vascular Disease Epidemiology Study (INVEST) and the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP)) and address relevant methodological issues., Methods: Comparison was restricted to 55- to 81-year olds. Attachment loss (AL), probing depth (PD) and tooth count were assessed in INVEST (full-mouth, six sites) and SHIP (half-mouth, four sites). Subjects were classified according to the CDC/AAP case definition. Recording protocols were standardized. Mixed linear or logistic models were used to compare INVEST with SHIP., Results: Mean half-mouth AL was lower in INVEST versus SHIP (INVEST: 2.9 mm versus SHIP: 4.0 mm, p < 0.05). Findings were similar across multiple periodontal disease definitions. After equalization of recording protocols and adjustment for periodontal risk factors, mean AL and PD were 1.2 and 0.3 mm lower in INVEST versus SHIP (p < 0.001). The odds for severe periodontitis (CDC/AAP) was 0.2-fold in INVEST versus SHIP (p < 0.001). Confounding effects of age, gender, race/ethnicity, education and use of interdental care devices were highest as indicated by change-in-estimate for study., Conclusion: Implementation of the proposed method for comparison of epidemiological studies revealed that periodontitis was less prevalent in INVEST compared with SHIP, even after extensive risk-factor adjustment., (© 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)

Aim: To quantify the digit preference effect for three manual periodontal probes and to calculate correction values to enable comparison of studies with equal recording protocols, but different periodontal probes., Material and Methods: A prospective in vivo crossover study was conducted with a six-sequence three-period design. Six examiners assessed attachment loss (AL), probing pocket depth (PD) and gingiva height (GH) at four surfaces, full-mouth, in six generally healthy subjects using three manual probes: PCP11 (3-3-3-2 mm increments), PCP2 (2 mm increments), and PCPUNC15 (1 mm increments)., Results: Distributions of AL, PD and GH differed between probes (p < 0.001). Compared with PCPUNC15, periodontal measurements coinciding with probe markings of PCP11 and PCP2, respectively, were preferentially named by examiners. Digit preference was most pronounced for PD, but less for AL and GH. In multilevel models, PD differed significantly between all three probes (p < 0.05); probe- and examiner-related effects were also observed for AL and GH. Correction values for pairwise combinations of probes were determined., Conclusions: We provided empirical evidence and quantified the effect of probe type on periodontal measurements. Aim: To evaluate the association of Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF) I-related variables with periodontitis in the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP)., Material and Methods: From the cross-sectional SHIP, 2293 subjects with clinical attachment loss (CAL) data and 2398 subjects with tooth count data aged 20-59 years were analysed. Serum IGF-I and IGF-binding protein (BP)-3 levels were determined by chemiluminescence immunoassays. Linear and logistic regressions with fractional polynomials were used to study associations between IGF-related variables and mean CAL or high tooth loss. For non-linear relations between IGFBP-3 and mean CAL, graphical presentations of fractional polynomials were used to deduce knots for linear splines., Results: In fully adjusted models, for serum IGFBP-3 values ≤1200 ng/ml, mean CAL increased significantly for decreasing serum IGFBP-3 levels [B = -0.027 (95% CI, -0.049; -0.005), p = 0.02]. The odds for high tooth loss decreased significantly for high serum IGFBP-3 values [OR = 0.97 (0.95; 0.99), p = 0.02]. Serum IGF-I levels and the IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio were not related to mean CAL or tooth loss after full adjustment., Conclusions: Low serum IGFBP-3 levels might be associated with higher levels of periodontal disease. Background: Oral leukoplakia is an oral lesion suspected to be of premalignant character. Besides smoking and alcohol, the risk factors for the development of this oral lesion are still less identified. The purpose of this study was the search for a possible influence of periodontitis on the risk of leukoplakia., Methods: We used data from 4233 subjects (2116 women and 2117 men) who were recruited for the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) and finished a standard medical and dental examination. One hundred two-three cases with oral leukoplakia were 1:2 age and sex-matched with 246 healthy control subjects. Measures of bleeding on probing and clinical attachment loss were related to oral leukoplakia., Results: We found increased periodontal measures in subjects with leukoplakia. Adjusting for risk factors and possible confounders revealed a periodontitis-related dose-dependent increase in the probability of having oral leukoplakia. Odds ratios adjusted for socioeconomic factors and smoking computed for the second, third and fourth quartiles of clinical attachment loss were OR=1.7 (0.6-5.0), 3.3 (0.8-13.1) and 5.3 (1.2-22.7), respectively. For bleeding on probing the respective odds ratios were OR=2.0 (0.8-4.90), 2.9 (1.1-7.8) and 3.8 (1.5-9.8), respectively. Measures of systemic inflammation and of lipid metabolism were important cofactors attenuating these figures. While smoking is a risk factor of leukoplakia, oral hygiene is protective. In a follow-up survey, the leukoplakia subjects had lost more teeth than their counterparts (p=0.043)., Conclusion: Periodontitis increases the risk of oral leukoplakia and, therefore, the risk of mucosal lesions predisposing to oral cancers., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Aim: To assess the suitability of different definitions of caries and periodontitis for inclusion in tooth loss prediction models., Materials and Methods: The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) is a population-based cohort study conducted in 1997-2001 (SHIP-0) and 2002-2006 (SHIP-1). This sample comprised 2,780 subjects aged 20-81 years with complete information on dental and periodontal status [DMFS status, clinical attachment loss (CAL) and probing depth (PD)]. Analyses on five-year tooth loss were limited to half-mouth data., Results: The predictive value of tested definitions was markedly age- and gender-dependent: in 20-39-aged men, the number of decayed or filled surfaces best predicted the number of lost teeth, whereas in young women CAL≥4 mm performed best. In older subjects, periodontal definitions were superior to caries definitions: mean CAL performed best in 40-59-year olds, whereas AL- or PD-related definitions predicted best in 60-81-year olds. On tooth level, mean CAL was the superior definition to assess 5-year incident tooth loss in all strata except for young men., Conclusions: Caries parameters best predicted incident tooth loss in men aged 20-39 years; in the intermediate and oldest age group and in young women, mean AL was most informative. Objectives: Treatment regimens, which predictably support re-osseointegration of implants with peri-implantitis, are needed. Increased wettability may be an important factor for re-osseointegration. In this study, a cold atmospheric pressure gas-discharge plasma was applied to reduce water contact angles on titanium discs with different surface topography and to improve the spreading of osteoblastic cells., Material and Methods: An argon plasma jet with different oxygen admixtures was used to treat titanium discs with different topologies, i.e. machined, SLA(®) , SLActive(®) , diamond bur-treated or Airflow(®) -treated. Water contact angles were measured before and after plasma treatment. The spreading behaviour of human osteoblastic cells was investigated., Results: Contact angle of titanium discs (baseline values: 68°-117°) were significantly reduced close to 0° irrespective of surface topography after the application of argon plasma with 1.0% oxygen admixture for 60 s or 120 s. The cell size of osteoblastic cells grown on argon-oxygen-plasma-treated titanium discs was significantly larger than on non-treated surfaces (p < 0.001) irrespective of surface topography., Conclusions: Plasma treatment reduced contact angle and supported spreading of osteoblastic cells. The application of cold plasma may be supportive in the treatment of peri-implant lesions and may improve the process of re-osseointegration., (© 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)

Aim: To assess the extent of remission and progression of periodontal diseases among adults in a Northeast German Region., Materials and Methods: The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) is a population-based cohort study with baseline examinations conducted in 1997-2001 and 5-year-follow-up in 2002-2006. The study comprised 2558 subjects aged 20-81 years. Periodontal status was assessed by probing depth (PD) and attachment level (AL), measured at four surfaces per tooth, half-mouth. An event was defined as AL progression or remission of ≥3 mm on ≥2 sites., Results: Average change in mean AL (mean PD) was 0.10 mm (-0.05 mm) during follow-up, equalling 0.02 mm/year (-0.01 mm/year). Adjusted for gender and follow-up time, change in mean AL was significantly higher in 20-29- and 60-69-year-old patients compared with 50-59-year-old patients (p < 0.05). 6.5 (7.5) events of progression (remission) in AL per 100 person-years were observed. In multivariate models, risk factors for progression comprised current smoking, middle or low education, being single or divorced and diabetes (p < 0.05). Enhanced progressive attachment loss seen in 20-29- and 60-81-year-old patients was explained through unfavourable risk factors distributions., Conclusions: Periodontal progression was moderate. Obesity and edentulism are both associated with multiple systemic disorders with an inflammatory background including periodontal diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the different impact of obesity on inflammation in dentate and toothless subjects. The data came from the population-based, cross-sectional study SHIP (Study of Health in Pomerania). We determined anthropometric measures including BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), diagnostic periodontal parameters, and systemic metabolites. It was shown that measures of systemic markers of inflammation and lipid or glucose metabolism (P < 0.001) were increased with higher WHR. When adjusted for age, sex, smoking, diabetes, education, physical activity, and last dentist's appointment, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, and leukocyte count were significantly related to WHR increasing from the first to the fourth WHR quartile (P < 0.001) as well as to the BMI. In both dentate and edentulous subjects higher WHR contributes significantly to increasing systemic CRP and fibrinogen with sex differences. In toothless subjects, while still dependent on increasing WHR, the inflammatory markers CRP and fibrinogen were higher than in dentate subjects, thereby revealing effect modification between sex and edentulism (P < 0.010). In conclusion, subjects with total tooth loss, although devoid of periodontal inflammation, may exhibit increased levels of systemic inflammatory mediators. Possible implications are discussed with respect to obesity and its relationship to inflammation.

Aim. The aim was to compare the periodontal status of the acromegalic patients with healthy subjects from a large population-based cohort (Study of Health in Pomerania, SHIP). Materials and Methods. We studied 32 acromegalic patients (16 females) and 128 randomly selected SHIP subjects (controls) using a 1 : 4 matching. Serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 levels were measured using the Immulite 2500 system. Periodontitis was assessed by clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing depth (PD), and number of missing teeth. Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess differences in periodontal variables between acromegalic patients and controls. Results. IGF-I levels were comparable in acromegalic patients and controls, whereas IGFBP-3 levels were significantly higher in acromegalic patients (P = 0.004). In multivariate modelling, both groups did not differ significantly with respect to mean CAL (P = 0.12) and high tooth loss (P = 0.36). Mean PD was higher in acromegalic patients by trend (B = 0.28 (-0.00; 0.56)). Conclusion. In acromegalic patients, periodontal disease severity did not differ from their healthy SHIP controls.

Aim: Dental biofilms play a major role in the pathogenesis of peri-implant mucositis. Biofilm reduction is a pre-requisite for a successful therapy of peri-implant mucosal lesions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of three different plasma devices on the reduction of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and multispecies human saliva biofilms., Material and Methods: We assessed the efficacy of three different non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma devices against biofilms of S. mutans and saliva multispecies grown on titanium discs in vitro in comparison with a chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) rinse. Efficacy of plasma treatment was determined by the number of colony forming units (CFU) and by scanning electron microscopy. The results were reported as reduction of CFU (CFU(untreated) -CFU(treated) )., Results: The application of plasma was much more effective than CHX against biofilms. The maximum reduction of CHX was 3.36 for S. mutans biofilm and 1.50 for saliva biofilm, whereas the colony forming units (CFU) reduction of the volume dielectric barrier discharge argon plasma was 5.38 for S. mutans biofilm and 5.67 for saliva biofilm., Conclusions: Treatment of single- and multispecies dental biofilms on titanium discs with non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma was more efficient than CHX application in vitro. Staphylococcus aureus is both a prominent cause of nosocomial infections with significant morbidity and mortality and a commensal with nasal carriage in around 30% of the population. The rapid spread of multi-resistant strains necessitates novel therapeutic strategies, a challenging task because the species S. aureus and the host response against it are highly variable. In a prospective study among 2023 surgical and non-surgical patients, 12 patients developed S. aureus bacteremia. They were analysed in detail using a personalized approach. For each patient, the extracellular proteins of the infecting S. aureus strain were identified and the developing antibody response was assessed on 2-D immunoblots. S. aureus carriers showed clear evidence of strain-specific pre-immunization. In all immune-competent bacteremia patients, antibody binding increased strongly, in most cases already at diagnosis. In endogenous infections, the pattern of antibody binding was similar to the pre-infection pattern. In exogenous infections, in contrast, the pre-infection pattern was radically altered with the acquisition of new specificities. These were characteristic for individual patients. Nevertheless, a common signature of 11 conserved S. aureus proteins, recognized in at least half of the bacteremic patients, was identified. Platelet factor 4 (PF4) and heparin (H) form PF4/H complexes, the target of the immune reaction in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). HIT seems to be a secondary immune response as anti-PF4/H-IgG antibodies occur as early as day 4 of heparin treatment. This study investigated whether prevalent infections such as periodontitis may induce the PF4/H immune response as: (1) natural anti-PF4/H Abs are present in the normal population; (2) PF4 bound to bacteria exposes the same antigen(s) as PF4/H complexes; and (3) sepsis induces PF4/H Abs in mice. We found PF4 bound to periodontal pathogens (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis) enabling subsequent binding of human anti-PF4/H Abs. The association of natural PF4/H Abs and periodontitis was assessed in a case-control study, enrolling individuals with natural anti-PF4/H Abs (n = 40 matched pairs), and in the cross-sectional population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP; n = 3500). Both studies showed a robust association between periodontitis and presence of anti-PF4/H Abs independent of inflammation markers (case-control study: lowest vs highest tertile, odds ratio, 7.12 [95% confidence interval, 1.73-46.13; P = .005]; SHIP study, p(trend) ≤ 0.001). Thus, preimmunization to PF4/bacteria complexes by prevalent infections, for example, periodontitis, likely explains the presence of natural anti-PF4/heparin Abs and the early occurrence of anti-PF4/H-IgG in HIT.

Background: The human chromosomal region 9p21.3 has been shown to be strongly associated with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in several Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS). Recently, this region has also been shown to be associated with Aggressive Periodontitis (AgP), strengthening the hypothesis that the established epidemiological association between periodontitis and CHD is caused by a shared genetic background, in addition to common environmental and behavioural risk factors. However, the size of the analyzed cohorts in this primary analysis was small compared to other association studies on complex diseases. Using our own AgP cohort, we attempted to confirm the described associations for the chromosomal region 9p21.3., Methods: We analyzed our cohort consisting of patients suffering from the most severe form of AgP, generalized AgP (gAgP) (n = 130) and appropriate periodontally healthy control individuals (n = 339) by genotyping four tagging SNPs (rs2891168, rs1333042, rs1333048 and rs496892), located in the chromosomal region 9p21.3, that have been associated with AgP., Results: The results confirmed significant associations between three of the four SNPs and gAgP. The combination of our results with those from the study which described this association for the first time in a meta-analysis of the four tagging SNPs produced clearly lower p-values compared with the results of each individual study. According to these results, the most plausible genetic model for the association of all four tested SNPs with gAgP seems to be the multiplicative one., Conclusion: We positively replicated the finding of an association between the chromosomal region 9p21.3 and gAgP. This result strengthens support for the hypothesis that shared susceptibility genes within this chromosomal locus might be involved in the pathogenesis of both CHD and gAgP.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine whether both type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with increased prevalence and extent of periodontal disease and tooth loss compared with non-diabetic subjects within a homogeneous adult study population., Material and Methods: T1DM, T2DM and non-diabetic subjects were recruited from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania. Additionally, T1DM subjects were retrieved from a Diabetes Centre. The total study population comprised 145 T1DM and 2647 non-diabetic subjects aged 20-59 years, and 182 T2DM and 1314 non-diabetic subjects aged 50-81 years. Periodontal disease was assessed by attachment loss (AL) and the number of missing teeth., Results: Multivariable regression revealed an association between T1DM (p<0.001) and T2DM (p<0.01) with mean AL after full adjustment. After age stratification (p=0.04 for interaction), the effect of T2DM was only statistically significant in the 60-69-year-old subjects (B=0.90 (95% confidence intervals [95% CI]; 0.49, 1.31). T1DM was positively associated with tooth loss (adjusted, p<0.001). The association between T2DM and tooth loss was statistically significant only for females (odds ratios=1.60 [95% CI: 1.10, 2.33])., Conclusions: Our study confirmed an association between both T1DM and T2DM with periodontitis and tooth loss. Therefore, oral health education should be promoted in diabetic subjects.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and extent of periodontal diseases among adults in a province in Eastern Germany., Material and Methods: The Study of Health in Pomerania is a population-based study conducted during 1997-2001. The net random sample comprised 4310 20-81-year-old subjects. Periodontal status was assessed at four surfaces using a half-mouth recording protocol., Results: The prevalence of attachment loss >or=3 mm was 89.7%, with 62.8% of teeth being affected. Probing depths >or=4 mm were prevalent in 69.7% of subjects, and 29.6% of teeth were affected. 25.3% of all subjects had severe pockets (>or=6 mm). Periodontitis was significantly more prevalent in males. For attachment loss, the prevalence and extent increased significantly with increasing age, whereas probing depth values levelled off after the age of 40. In older subjects, increased recession and attachment loss were found, while the probing depth remained constant. According to the recent CDC classification, 17.6% and 33.3% of persons had severe and moderate periodontitis, respectively. The prevalence of periodontitis increased significantly with age and remained constant after the age of 50-59., Conclusions: Periodontitis is more prevalent in Pomerania than in the United States or Western Europe. In older subjects, attachment loss steadily increased, while the probing depth remained constant.
