Many modern devices rely on wireless Internet connection. This has increased the demand for high performance wireless networks. However, the traditional single-transmitting single-receiving antenna systems cannot provide the desired data rates and latencies in the future. The capacity of wireless communication systems can be increased by using more than one transmitting and receiving antennas. These multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems allow the use of advanced signal precoding methods including beamforming. This method enables transmission of several concurrent data streams by controlling the electromagnetic wave interference. In this thesis, we review various beamforming techniques for single user and multi-user MIMO systems. In the single user case, the well-known eigen-beamforming method is derived, which achieves the optimal channel capacity. In the multi-user MIMO context, we focus on zero-forcing techniques that are based on a zero inter-user interference constraint. Finally, we define a new geometry-based MIMO channel model that is used for beamforming simulations. Results indicate that using beamforming can yield substantial increase in performance compared to the traditional communication systems., Monet nykyajan laitteet vaativat toimiakseen langattoman internet-yhteyden. Lopuksi määritellään uusi geometriaperusteinen kanavamalli, jota käytetään keilanmuodostussimulaatioissa. Tulokset osoittavat, että keilanmuodostusta käyttämällä voidaan parantaa merkittävästi langattomien viestintäsysteemien suorituskykyä.

One of the main problems studied in statistic is the fitting of models. If we assume that the "true" distribution belongs to some model, we can use data and observation to find the distribution that fits the best. Ideally, we would like to explain a large dataset with as few parameters as possible. This is because models with few parameters are simpler, so computation becomes faster and interpreting the model also becomes easier. The downside is that simpler models tend to have larger errors than less simple ones. In generalized linear models each parameter corresponds to one covariate. One might then ask which of these actually useful, or the most "impactful" in our fitting procedure, and how do we actually decide which covariates to include in the model. There have been numerous attempts at automatizing this process. Most notably, the Least Angle Regression algorithm, or LARS, by Efron et al. [2004] is a computationally efficient algorithm that ranks the covariates of a linear model. The LARS algorithm was extended by Hirose and Komaki [2010] for a class of distributions in the generalized linear model by using properties of the manifold of exponential families as dually flat manifolds. However, this extension assumes that the normalizing constant of the joint distribution of observations is "easy" to compute. This is often not the case, for excample the normalizing constant may contain complicated integral. We circumvent this issue if normalizing constant satisfies a holonomic system. In this thesis, we present a modification of the holonomic gradient method [Nakayama et al., 2011] and add it to the extended LARS algorithm. We call this the holonomic extended least angle regression algorithm, or HELARS. The algorithm was implemented using the statistical software R, and was tested with real and simulated datasets., Yksi tilastotieteen tärkeimmistä ongelmista on mallien sovittaminen. The goal of this thesis is to determine the influence of event failures on system failures. Component failures are expressed in terms of event failures and they determine the system failures. The influence is studied with the Fussell-Vesely (FV) influence measure, which quantifies the decrease in network reliability due to a component failure. Systems considered include parallel-series systems, series-parallel systems, two-terminal networks and sparse graphs, in particular series-parallel (SP) graphs. The systems are expressed in terms of SP graphs. Their reliabilities are determined using algebraic methods and a minimal cut sets approach. We provide a non-trivial proof that an (n,k)-binomial-switched system, i.e. a k-out-of-n system with n independent component failures, is not the percolation event of a graph. A k-out-of-n system fails when at least k components fail out of n components. The naming is due to the fact that the number of working events follows the binomial distribution. Thus, certain systems cannot be studied with our algebraic percolation methods and the methods apply to a very specific class of problems. This work represents FV ideals for different systems with an increasing number of events. The results are compared to a real system from industrial engineering called a residual heat removal system (RHR) with 147 minimal cut sets. We suggest an alternative to the FV dominance measure that is defined with strict inequalities. Hence, the task can be solved with positivity theorems in compact polytopes, and the problem has algebraic solution that can be solved with the algebraic methods shown in this work. The research suggests an algebraic approach for percolation theory and reliability engineering, using tools from real algebraic geometry. We call this approach algebraic reliability., Työn tavoite on selventää tapahtumavikaantumisten vaikutusta systeemivikaantumisille. In the recent years, there have been significant developments in the field of machine learning, with the modern methods like deep learning, significantly overpassing previous state-of-the-art results on a variety of tasks. These modern methods however, come at the cost of increased complexity and require careful tuning of multiple hyperparameters which specify the model. The common practice still is manual tuning of the hyperparameters, making the use of deep learning methods, more of an art than a science. In this thesis, we will explore some of the methods for automated hyperparameter optimization, focusing on the gradient-based approach. The goal is to provide a gentle introduction to this topic, by first providing a solid overview of essential concepts from both optimization and machine learning.

Lie groups are essentially groups in the continuous setting, representing continuous symmetries of different geometric objects, just like finite groups do in the discrete setting. Lie groups exhibit marvellous structures, which enable us to take advantage of analysis and group theory when studying them. This is due to Lie groups being manifolds with a group structure. Lie groups started off as a tool to study the solutions of differential equations. They are still used in that manner in the field of differential Galois theory, where one asks whether specific differential equations are soluble in some context. Additionally, Lie theory, the correspondence between Lie groups and Lie algebras constitute a subject of study in modern differential geometry. In this work we develop the basics of Lie theory focusing on the properties of the Lie correspondence via the exponential map. We continue on to define metrics on a Lie group and introduce one of the most prominent tools in statistics in the Lie setting, that is, the principal component analysis. We then apply this to study some distributions on Lie groups, specifically on $SO_n(\mathbb{R})$ and on the group of medial representations. The medial representations are fundamental objects in modern shape analysis. The study on medial axes was initiated by Harry Blum. We add some properties on his definition of a medial axis to achieve data on a Lie group, which we can then study using principal geodesic analysis. Doing this, we heavily rely on the work of P. Thomas Fletcher., Lien ryhmät vastaavat perinteisiä ryhmiä jatkuvassa asetelmassa, joten niillä voidaan esittää jatkuvien geometrioiden kappaleiden symmetrioita. Ryhmärakenteen lisäksi Lien ryhmät ovat sileitä monistoja, jolloin algebrallisten työkalujen lisäksi voimme turvautua geometrisiin sekä analyyttisiin argumentteihin. Alun perin Lien ryhmiin törmättiin tutkittaessa differentiaaliyhtälöiden ratkaisuja. Niitä käytetään yhä tähän tapaan differentiaalisen Galois'n teorian parissa, missä tutkitaan differentiaaliyhtälöiden tietynlaista ratkeavuutta. Tämän lisäksi Lien teoria, siis Lien algebroiden ja Lien ryhmien vastaavuus toistensa kanssa, on tärkeä osa nykyistä differentiaaligeometriaa. Tässä opinnäytteessä esitetään Lien teorian perusteet. Mediaaliset esitykset ovat tärkeitä olioita modernissa muotoanalyysissa. Harry Blum oli ensimmäinen, joka huomasi näiden esitysten tärkeyden. In forthcoming years, the Internet of Things (IoT) will connect billions of smart devices generating and uploading a deluge of data to the cloud. If successfully extracted, the knowledge buried in the data can significantly improve the quality of life and foster economic growth. However, a critical bottleneck for realizing the efficient IoT is the pressure it puts on the existing communication infrastructures, requiring transfer of enormous data volumes. Aiming at addressing this problem, we propose a novel architecture dubbed Condense which integrates the IoT-communication infrastructure into the data analysis. This is achieved via the generic concept of network function computation. Instead of merely transferring data from the IoT sources to the cloud, the communication infrastructure should actively participate in the data analysis by carefully designed en-route processing. We define the Condense architecture, its basic layers, and the interactions among its constituent modules. Furthermore, from the implementation side, we describe how Condense can be integrated into the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) machine type communications (MTCs) architecture, as well as the prospects of making it a practically viable technology in a short time frame, relying on network function virtualization and software-defined networking. Finally, from the theoretical side, we survey the relevant literature on computing atomic functions in both analog and digital domains, as well as on function decomposition over networks, highlighting challenges, insights, and future directions for exploiting these techniques within practical 3GPP MTC architecture.

Recently, Fuchsian codes have been proposed in Blanco-Chacon et al. (2014) [2] for communication over channels subject to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The two main advantages of Fuchsian codes are their ability to compress information, i.e., high code rate, and their logarithmic decoding complexity. In this paper, we improve the first property further by constructing Fuchsian codes with arbitrarily high code rates while maintaining logarithmic decoding complexity. Namely, in the case of Fuchsian groups derived from quaternion algebras over totally real fields we obtain a code rate that is proportional to the degree of the base field. In particular, we consider arithmetic Fuchsian groups of signature (1; e) to construct explicit codes having code rate six, meaning that we can transmit six independent integers during one channel use., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes had a renaissance when they were rediscovered in the 1990’s. Since then LDPC codes have been an important part of the field of error-correcting codes, and have been shown to be able to approach the Shannon capacity, the limit at which we can reliably transmit information over noisy channels. Following this, many modern communications standards have adopted LDPC codes. Error-correction is equally important in protecting data from corruption on a hard-drive as it is in deep-space communications. It is most commonly used for example for reliable wireless transmission of data to mobile devices. For practical purposes, both encoding and decoding need to be of low complexity to achieve high throughput and low power consumption. This thesis provides a literature review of the current state-of-the-art in encoding and decoding of LDPC codes. Message- passing decoders are still capable of achieving the best error-correcting performance, while more recently considered bit-flipping decoders are providing a low-complexity alternative, albeit with some loss in error-correcting performance. An implementation of a low-complexity stochastic bit-flipping decoder is also presented. It is implemented for Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in a parallel fashion, providing a peak throughput of 1.2 Gb/s, which is significantly higher than previous decoder implementations on GPUs. The error-correcting performance of a range of decoders has also been tested, showing that the stochastic bit-flipping decoder provides relatively good error-correcting performance with low complexity. Finally, a brief comparison of encoding complexities for two code ensembles is also presented.

Kleptography is the study of stealing information securely and subliminally. A successful kleptographic attack is undetectable, and, therefore, kleptographic attacks are only useful against so called black-box implementations of cryptographic primitives and protocols. The dangers of black-box cryptography have been publicly known for almost two decades. However, black-box cryptography is still widespread. The recent revelations of the United States National Security Agency's efforts to sabotage cryptographic standards and products have showed that kleptographic attacks constitute a real threat, and that countermeasures are needed. In this thesis we study known kleptographic primitives, and examine how they can be used to compromise the security of well known secure communication protocols. We also take an in depth look at the Dual_EC_DRBG, which is a kleptographic pseudorandom number generator designed by the NSA. Finally, we present a new proof of concept -- a kleptographic pseudorandom number generator that can be used as a secure subliminal channel. The difference between our generator and the Dual_EC_DRBG is that the Dual_EC_DRBG leaks its own state while our generator can be used to leak any information. The strength of our generator is that it can be used to compromise the security of any protocol where random numbers are transmitted in plaintext. In addition, the use of our generator cannot be detected by the users of the protocol, except under very special circumstances. Compared to kleptographic attacks based on other kleptographic primitives, attacks based on our generator are usually inefficient. However, there are many protocols that cannot be compromised with the use of traditional kleptographic techniques. An example of a system that cannot be compromised with these techniques is the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. With our generator it is, nevertheless, possible. We have showed that all the protocols we have examined are susceptible to kle, Kleptografi är läran om hur man kan stjäla information på ett säkert och diskret sätt. Kännetecknet för en lyckad kleptografisk attack är att den kan utföras obemärkt. Riskerna med svartlådskryptografi har redan länge varit kända, men tyvärr är implementationer som kan anses utgöra svarta lådor ännu vanliga. Nyligen har det avslöjats att Amerikas förenta staters National Security Agency har lagt ner stora resurser på att sabotera kryptografiska standarder och produkter. Dessa avslöjanden visar att kleptografiska attacker utgör ett stort hot och att effektiva motåtgärder behövs. I detta diplomarbete studerar vi kända kleptografiska primitiv och undersöker hur dessa kan användas för att knäcka väl kända kryptografiska kommunikationsprotokoll. Vi undersöker även Dual_EC_DRBG som är en kleptografisk slumptalsgenerator designad av NSA. Till sist presenterar vi vår egen kleptografiska slumptalsgenerator som kan användas som en säker och gömd kommunikationskanal. Skillnaden mellan Dual_EC_DRBG och vår generator är den att Dual_EC_DRBG enbart läcker sitt interna tillstånd, medan vår generator kan användas för att läcka valfri information. Vår kleptografiska generators styrka är att den kan användas för att knäcka säkerheten av alla kommunikationsprotokoll som exponerar slumptal. Dessutom kan användningen av vår generator inte upptäckas av kommunikationsprotokollets användare, förutom under väldigt speciella omständigheter. I jämförelse med traditionella kleptografiska attacker är det ofta svårare och inte lika effektivt att uppnå samma mål med vår generator. Dock finns det flera kommunikationsprotokoll vars säkerhet inte går att knäcka med traditionella kleptografiska metoder. Ett exempel på ett sådant kommunikationsprotokoll är säkerhetsprotokollet i 3G nätverket. Med vår generator är det däremot enkelt att knäcka 3G nätverkets sä

Electronic textbooks of mathematics would benefit from interactively explorable proofs, where the reader can request a more detailed explanation for any part of the proof he or she does not understand. This requires that definitions, theorem statements, and proofs are written in some formal language. In this thesis we investigate the theoretical and practical challenges of producing such textbooks. Any particular choice of language cannot be adequate for all textbooks, so we construct a theoretical framework for discussing extensible languages. Under this framework we define three languages for expressing definitions and theorem statements. The first two correspond to the standard languages of propositional and first-order logics. The third language is expressive enough for most definitions and theorem statements in discrete mathematics, but conceptually less problematic than the languages of set theory and higher-order logic, because it cannot express unrestricted quantification over sets that are larger than the set of real numbers. In addition, an implementation of an interactive proof explorer is presented. Its capabilities are demonstrated with an explorable proof of Bertrand’s postulate. The focus of this thesis is on the experience of the reader, and the results seem promising in that regard. With further work on making the authoring tools more efficient to use, it should be feasible to formalize an entire textbook., Sähköisissä matematiikan oppikirjoissa olisi hyötyä interaktiivisista todistuksista, joiden avulla lukija voisi pyytää tarkentavaa selitystä mihin tahansa kohtaan, jota hän ei ymmärrä. In data transmissions over wireless channels, the signal quality is weakened by random fading and noise of the electric field. This intrinsic property of the channel poses a challenge as the transmitted messages should be decodable at the receiver. On the other hand, it can be utilized for physical-layer security, in which the correct decoding probability drastically decreases when the signal quality weakens, hence securing the message from unintended receivers farther away. In this thesis, we study the design of lattices for lattice codes with an emphasis on lattice coset codes mostly in the Rayleigh fast fading channel model. Good lattice codes, i.e., solutions to the legitimate receiver's problem are known based on number-theoretic lattice constructions, whereas the design of lattice coset codes providing also physical-layer security is an open problem. We begin with a review of basic information theory, providing existence results and performance bounds on codes. Then, we specialize in lattice codes and lattice coset codes in wireless channels, deriving probability bounds for the legitimate receiver's error probability and the eavesdropper's correct decoding probability. In terms of these bounds, algebraic lattice constructions based on field extensions perform well, and for such lattices the bounds yield number-theoretic optimization problems. We study algebraic number theory extensively in order to have the tools to construct algebraic lattices and formulate and compute the probability bounds in terms of the properties of a given field extension. Finally, we compute the number-theoretic invariants and the eavesdropper's probability bound for algebraic lattices to assess and geometrize the different number-theoretic approaches that have been suggested to predict the eavesdropper's correct decoding probability for lattice coset codes., Langattomassa viestinnässä signaalinlaatua heikentävät sähkömagneettisten aaltojen satunnaissironta sekä taustakohina. Luotettavan viestinnän takaaville hilakoodeille tunnetaan lukuteoreettisia kostruktioita, kun taas myös fyysisen kerroksen salauksen takaavien hilojen jäännösluokkakoodien suunnittelu on avoin ongelma. Diplomityö aloitetaan kertaamalla informaatioteorian perustuloksia, jotka koskevat koodien olemassaoloa ja tiedonsiirtokapasiteettia. Tämän jälkeen erikoistutaan langattoman viestinnän kanavamalleihin sekä hilakoodeihin ja jäännösluokkakoodeihin. Näissä tapauksissa johdetaan ylärajat tarkoitetun vastaanottajan virhetodennäköisyydelle sekä salakuuntelijan oikean dekoodauksen todennäköisyydelle. Todennäköisyysrajojen perusteella lukukuntalaajennuksiin perustuvat algebralliset hilat suoriutuvat hyvin, ja tällaisten hilojen suunnittelu on lukuteoreettinen ongelma. Algebrallista lukuteoriaa tutkitaan laajasti ja saadaan algebrallisten hilojen konstruktio sekä työkalut viestinnän vertailukriteerien muotoiluun ja laskentaan lukuteoreettisin keinoin. Lopuksi lasketaan lukuteoreettiset invariantit sekä salakuuntelijan todennäköisyysraja joukolle algebrallisia hiloja. Tämän perustella arvioidaan ja geometrisoidaan salakuunteluongelmaan ehdotettuja jäännösluokkakoodien lukuteoreettisia hilasuunnittelukriteerejä.

In this paper, a link between polymatroid theory and locally repairable codes (LRCs) is established. The codes considered here are completely general in that they are subsets of $A^n$, where $A$ is an arbitrary finite set. Three classes of LRCs are considered, both with and without availability, and for both information-symbol and all-symbol locality. The parameters and classes of LRCs are generalized to polymatroids, and a general- ized Singelton bound on the parameters for these three classes of polymatroids and LRCs is given. This result generalizes the earlier Singleton-type bounds given for LRCs. Codes achieving these bounds are coined perfect, as opposed to the more common term optimal used earlier, since they might not always exist. Finally, new constructions of perfect linear LRCs are derived from gammoids, which are a special class of matroids. To optimize rotated, multidimensional constellations over a single-input, single-output Rayleigh fading channel, a family of rotation matrices is constructed for all dimensions which are a power of 2. This family is a one-parameter subgroup of the group of rotation matrices, and is located using a gradient descent scheme on this Lie group. The parameter defining the family is chosen to optimize the cutoff rate of the constellation. The optimal rotation parameter is computed explicitly for low signal-to-noise ratios. These rotations outperform full-diversity algebraic rotations in terms of cutoff rate at low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) and bit error rate at high SNR in dimension $n = 4$. However, a QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) constellation rotated by such a matrix lacks full diversity, in contrast with the conventional wisdom that good signal sets exhibit full diversity. A new notion of diversity, referred to as local diversity, is introduced to attempt to account for this behavior. Roughly, a locally fully diverse constellation is fully diverse only in small neighborhoods. A local variant of the minimum product distance is also introduced and is shown experimentally to be a superior predictor of constellation performance than the minimum product distance in dimension $n = 4$.

Fast-decodable distributed space-time codes are constructed by adapting the iterative code construction introduced in [1] to the N -relay multiple-input multiple-output channel, leading to the first fast-decodable distributed space-time codes for more than one antenna per user. The Compute-and-Forward relaying strategy achieves high computation rates by decoding linear combinations of transmitted messages at intermediate relays. However, if the involved relays independently choose which combinations of the messages to decode, there is no guarantee that the overall system of linear equations is solvable at the destination. In this article it is shown that, for a Gaussian fading channel model with two transmitters and two relays, always choosing the combination that maximizes the computation rate often leads to a case where the original messages cannot be recovered. It is further shown that by limiting the relays to select from carefully designed sets of equations, a solvable system can be guaranteed while maintaining high computation rates. Algebraic space-time coding allows for reliable data exchange across fading multiple-input multiple-output channels. A powerful technique for decoding space-time codes in Maximum-Likelihood (ML) decoding, but well-performing and widely-used codes such as the Golden code often suffer from high ML-decoding complexity. In this article, a recursive algorithm for decoding general algebraic space-time codes of arbitrary dimension is proposed, which reduces the worst-case decoding complexity from $O(|S|^{n^2})$ to $O(|S|^n)$., Comment: Submitted to Workshop on Coding and Cryptography (WCC) 2015
