EP/M006727/1 EP/S000259/1 Neuromorphic computation based on resistive switching devices represents a relevant hardware alternative for artificial deep neural networks. For the highest accuracies on pattern recognition tasks, an analog, linear, and symmetric synaptic weight is essential. Moreover, the resistive switching devices should be integrated with the supporting electronics, such as thin-film transistors (TFTs), to solve crosstalk issues on the crossbar arrays. Here, an a-Indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) memristor is proposed, with Mo and Ti/Mo as bottom and top contacts, with forming-free analog switching ability for an upcoming integration on crossbar arrays with a-IGZO TFTs for neuromorphic hardware systems. The development of a TFT compatible fabrication process is accomplished, which results in an a-IGZO memristor with a high stability and low cycle-to-cycle variability. The synaptic behavior through potentiation and depression tests using an identical spiking scheme is presented, and the modulation of the plasticity characteristics by applying non-identical spiking schemes is also demonstrated. The pattern recognition accuracy, using MNIST handwritten digits dataset, reveals a maximum of 91.82% accuracy, which is a promising result for crossbar implementation. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) produced by irradiation of paper (paper-LIG)holds substantial promise for flexible devices. This article presents paper-LIG humidity and temperature sensors fabricated by single-step irradiation of common filter paper with a pulsed UV laser (355 nm). The influence of the process parameters on the conversion of cellulose fibers into LIG is discussed based on the resulting morphology, structure, conductivity, and chemical composition, revealing a distinct barrier to transformation and a propagation behavior not seen under CO2 laser irradiation. The obtained material is constituted by a porous, electrically conductive network of fibers. The paper-LIG relative humidity (RH) and temperature sensors with sensitivities of up to 1.3 × 10−3%RH−1 and - 2.8 × 10−3 °C−1, respectively, are examined in terms of their linearity, reproducibility, and response time. A detailed discussion on the response mechanism is presented in the context of literature, pointing towards the absorption of water molecules in the interlayer spacing of graphene as the main reason for the increase in resistance with RH. Additionally, a contribution from variable range hopping along the ab plane of graphene at high RH is suggested. These results demonstrate the potential of paper-LIG for low-cost, sustainable, and environmentally friendly sensing. published

This work describes an innovative electrochemical biosensor that advances its autonomy toward an equipment-free design. The biosensor is powered by a passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) and signals the response via an electrochromic display. Briefly, the anode side of the DMFC power source was modified with a biosensor layer developed using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) technology to detect sarcosine (an amino acid derivative that is a potential cancer biomarker). The biosensor layer was anchored on the surface of the anode carbon electrode (carbon black with Pt/Ru, 40:20). This was done by bulk radical polymerization with acrylamide, bis-acrylamide, and vinyl phosphonic acid. This layer selectively interacted with sarcosine when integrated into the passive DMFC (single or multiple, in a stack of 4), which acted as a transducer element in a concentration-dependent process. Serial assembly of a stack of hybrid DMFC/biosensor devices triggered an external electrochromic cell (EC) that produced a colour change. Calibrations showed a concentration-dependent sarcosine response from 3.2 to 2000 µM, which is compatible with the concentration of sarcosine in the blood of prostate cancer patients. The final DMFC/biosensor-EC platform showed a colour change perceptible to the naked eye in the presence of increasing sarcosine concentrations. This colour change was controlled by the DMFC operation, making this approach a self-controlled and self-signalling device. Overall, this approach is a proof-of-concept for a fully autonomous biosensor powered by a chemical fuel. POCI-01-02B7-FEDER-068174 POCI-01-02B7-FEDER-069745 DFA/BD/8606/2020 The appearance and quick spread of the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease, COVID-19, brought major societal challenges. Importantly, suitable medical diagnosis procedures and smooth clinical management of the disease are an emergent need, which must be anchored on novel diagnostic methods and devices. Novel molecular diagnostic tools relying on nucleic acid amplification testing have emerged globally and are the current gold standard in COVID-19 diagnosis. However, the need for widespread testing methodologies for fast, effective testing in multiple epidemiological scenarios remains a crucial step in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Biosensors have previously shown the potential for cost-effective and accessible diagnostics, finding applications in settings where conventional, laboratorial techniques may not be readily employed. Paper- and cellulose-based biosensors can be particularly relevant in pandemic times, for the renewability, possibility of mass production with sustainable methodologies, and safe environmental disposal. In this review, paper-based devices and platforms targeting SARS-CoV-2 are showcased and discussed, as a means to achieve quick and low-cost PoC diagnosis, including detection methodologies for viral genomic material, viral antigen detection, and serological antibody testing. Devices targeting inflammatory markers relevant for COVID-19 are also discussed, as fast, reliable bedside diagnostic tools for patient treatment and follow-up. publishersversion published

DFA/BD/7882/2020 The pursuit of ever‐more efficient, reliable, and affordable solar cells has pushed the development of nano/micro‐technological solutions capable of boosting photovoltaic (PV) performance without significantly increasing costs. One of the most relevant solutions is based on light management via photonic wavelength‐sized structures, as these enable pronounced efficiency improvements by reducing reflection and by trapping the light inside the devices. Furthermore, optimized microstructured coatings allow self‐cleaning functionality via effective water repulsion, which reduces the accumulation of dust and particles that cause shading. Nevertheless, when it comes to market deployment, nano/micro‐patterning strategies can only find application in the PV industry if their integration does not require high additional costs or delays in high‐throughput solar cell manufacturing. As such, colloidal lithography (CL) is considered the preferential structuring method for PV, as it is an inexpensive and highly scalable soft‐patterning technique allowing nanoscopic precision over indefinitely large areas. Tuning specific parameters, such as the size of colloids, shape, monodispersity, and final arrangement, CL enables the production of various templates/masks for different purposes and applications. This review intends to compile several recent high‐profile works on this subject and how they can influence the future of solar electricity. publishersversion published
