Whether tropical trees acclimate to long‐term drought stress remains unclear. This uncertainty is amplified if drought stress is accompanied by changes in other drivers such as the increases in canopy light exposure that might be induced by tree mortality or other disturbances. Photosynthetic capacity, leaf respiration, non‐structural carbohydrate (NSC) storage and stomatal conductance were measured on 162 trees at the world's longest running (15 years) tropical forest drought experiment. We test whether surviving trees have altered strategies for carbon storage and carbon use in the drier and elevated light conditions present following drought‐related tree mortality. Relative to control trees, the surviving trees experiencing the drought treatment showed functional responses including: (a) moderately reduced photosynthetic capacity; (b) increased total leaf NSC; and (c) a switch from starch to soluble sugars as the main store of branch NSC. This contrasts with earlier findings at this experiment of no change in photosynthetic capacity or NSC storage. The changes detected here only occurred in the subset of drought‐stressed trees with canopies exposed to high radiation and were absent in trees with less‐exposed canopies and also in the community average. In contrast to previous results acquired through less intensive species sampling from this experiment, we also observe no species‐average drought‐induced change in leaf respiration. Our results suggest that long‐term responses to drought stress are strongly influenced by a tree's full‐canopy light environment and therefore that disturbance‐induced changes in stand density and dynamics are likely to substantially impact tropical forest responses to climate change. We also demonstrate that, while challenging, intensive sampling is essential in tropical forests to avoid sampling biases caused by limited taxonomic coverage. Neste trabalho, investigamos três questões fundamentais na ecologia de comunidades, utilizando um grande conjunto de dados da composição, demografia e atributos funcionais de comunidades arbóreas amostrados ao longo de um gradiente de elevação na Floresta Atlântica. No primeiro capítulo, utilizamos abordagens integrativas por meio de métricas da diversidade de espécies e filogenética sob diferentes arranjos de espécies (p.e. comunidade vs. famílias) para avaliar os processos ecológicos que conduzem as relações entre diversidade e elevação em florestas com mega diversidade. Encontramos um padrão de variação unimodal da diversidade da comunidade arbórea, emergindo da combinação dos diferentes padrões de diversidade de suas famílias com maior abundância. A diversidade filogenética local foi negativamente relacionada com a elevação e a diversidade regional (turnover) de espécies foi maior quanto maior a distância entre as comunidades. Estes resultados indicam a competição e a filtragem ambiental como principais processos nos mecanismos de montagem de comunidades ao longo de gradiente de elevação, e que a união das abordagens ecológica e evolutiva, sob diferentes arranjos de espécies, é fundamental para entender os processos que conduzem as relações entre diversidade e os gradientes ambientais. No segundo capítulo, além dos efeitos da variação de altitude, estudamos os efeitos da extração seletiva de madeira no padrão de diversidade e na estrutura filogenética de comunidades arbóreas, e avaliamos como a escala espacial pode alterar os resultados dessas análises. O corte seletivo e o filtro de altitude aumentaram a diversidade filogenética, apesar de conduzirem ao agrupamento filogenético. Os efeitos da altitude e da exploração madeireira foram mais fortes em larga escala, e os resultados foram alterados de acordo com os clados usados na análise. Dessa maneira, o filtro ambiental pode ofuscar o efeito da extração seletiva de madeira e, quando o filtro de elevação é excluído, os nichos abertos provavelmente por perturbações da exploração madeireira, levam a maior co-ocorrência de espécies filogeneticamente distantes. No terceiro capítulo, estudamos as relações entre os atributos funcionais e as taxas demográficas das espécies arbóreas considerando a importância de incluir interações entre os atributos, assim como o tipo florestal e o intervalo de tempo entre os censos (incluindo ou não um evento de seca), usando técnicas estatísticas inovadoras para melhorar o teste de premissas da análise funcional com um grande conjunto de dados. Aplicando o ‘aprendizado de máquina’ por meio de modelos de árvore de regressão impulsionados, descobrimos que a inclusão das interações entre atributos aumentou significativamente o poder dos modelos para prever as relações entre atributos e taxas demográficas, dependentes do tipo de vegetação e do intervalo de tempo. Assim, para avaliar a funcionalidade das comunidades vegetais, é importante considerar que pode haver múltiplos fenótipos com respostas demográficas semelhantes, resultados de interações entre atributos em diferentes habitats e intervalos de tempo. Concluindo, demonstramos que o uso de diferentes abordagens na ecologia de comunidades é fundamental para que possamos avaliar os processos ecológicos e mecanismos que conduzem a mega-diversidade de florestas tropicais e o funcionamento de suas comunidades. A central point in ecology is to elucidate the processes and mechanisms responsible for the patterns of diversity, structure, assembly, and functioning of communities. Here, by using a large set of data on the composition, demography, and functional attributes of tree communities sampled along an elevation gradient in the Atlantic Forest, we investigated three fundamental questions across three chapters in the ecology of communities. In the first chapter, we used an integrated approach of species diversity and phylogenetic diversity under different species arrangements (e.g. community vs. families) to assess the ecological processes that drive the relationships between diversity and elevation in mega-diversity forests. We found a unimodal pattern of diversity variation for the tree community, emerging from the combination of different patterns of diversity of its most abundant families. The local phylogenetic diversity was negatively related to the elevation and the regional diversity (turnover) of species was greater as greater the elevation difference between communities. These results showed species competition and environmental filtering as the most important processes in the community's assembly mechanisms along an elevation gradient and that the union of ecological and evolutionary approaches, under different species arrangements, are fundamental to evaluate the processes that drive relationships between diversity and environmental gradients at each scale. In the second chapter, along with the effects of altitude variation, we studied the effects of selective logging on the diversity and phylogenetic structure of tree communities and evaluated how spatial scale change these results. Selective logging tends to increase phylogenetic diversity but leads to phylogenetic clustering. The effects of elevation and logging were stronger on large scale, and the results were changed according to the clades used in the analysis. Therefore, the environmental filter can overshadow the effects of selective logging, when the elevation-filter was excluded, it revealed open niche-spaces probably created by disturbance of logging, leading to the co-occurrences of distantly related species. In the third chapter, we studied the trait-demography rates relationships of tree species taking into account 16 trait-interactions, forest type, time-interval between censuses (including or not a drought event) under robust statistical techniques to improve testing functional ecology assumptions by means of large datasets. Using machine learning through boosted regression tree models, we found that the inclusion of the trait-interactions significantly increased the power of the models to predict the trait-demography rates relationships and that trait-interactions were dependent on vegetation type and on time interval. Thus, to assess the functionality of the attributes, it is necessary to incorporate the concept of multiple phenotypes with similar demographic responses, resulting from various trait-interactions in different habitats and time intervals. To sum up, we demonstrate that the use of different approaches over community ecology is crucial for assessing the ecological processes and mechanisms that lead to a mega-diversity of tropical forests and the functioning of their communities. RESUMO A proximidade dos primatas não humanos (PNH) com o ser humano pode ser considerada um fator de risco para transmissão de bactérias entre essas duas populações. Neste estudo, foi investigada a microbiota anfibiôntica aeróbica oral e retal de calitriquídeos em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica localizado no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, e foram realizados testes fenotípicos para detecção de bactérias multirresistentes nos isolados encontrados. Foram capturados 14 calitriquídeos e coletadas 21 amostras (14 de cavidade oral e sete de cavidade retal) em dois pontos da mata próximos às habitações humanas. As espécies mais frequentes, na cavidade oral, foram Klebsiella oxytoca (50,0%), K. pneumoniae (28,6%), Kluyvera ascorbata (21,4%) e Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (21,4%) e, na cavidade retal, K. pneumoniae (85,7%), Escherichia coli (28,6%) e Enterobacter spp. (42,9%). Todos os 48 isolados da família Enterobacteriaceae foram negativos para ESBL (betalactamase de espectro ampliado), mostrando-se não produtores da enzima nos dois métodos utilizados: disco-aproximação e método de detecção automatizado. Na pesquisa de ERC (enterobactérias resistentes a carbapenêmicos), esses mesmos isolados não apresentaram resistência aos antibióticos imipenem, meropenem e ertapenem. Todas as bactérias isoladas apresentam um potencial zoonótico, o que representa um risco à saúde pública e à conservação das espécies. ABSTRACT Proximity of nonhuman primates (NHP) to humans can be considered a risk factor for transmission of pathogens between these two populations. This study investigated the oral and rectal aerobic bacterial microbiota of marmosets in an anthropized area of the Atlantic Forest located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and performed phenotypic tests for detection of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Twenty-one samples (14 from the oral cavity and seven from the rectum) were collected from 14 Callithrix sp. captured in two sites of the forest near human dwellings. The most frequent species identified from the oral cavity swabs were Klebsiella oxytoca (50.0%), K. pneumoniae (28.6%), Kluyvera ascorbata (21.4%) and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (21.4%), whereas the species most commonly identified from the rectum swabs were K. pneumoniae (85.7%), Enterobacter spp. (42.9%) and Escherichia coli (28.6%). All isolates of family Enterobacteriaceae showed no extended spectrum β-lactamase production by disk-diffusion and automated detection tests. In the search for carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae these isolates presented no resistance to the imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem antibiotics. The isolate of Staphylococcus aureus was susceptible to oxacillin and the isolate of Enterococcus was susceptible to vancomycin. All isolated bacteria showed zoonotic potential, thus posing a risk to species conservation and public health.

Os determinantes da ocorrência de raízes tabulares e suporte ainda são pouco compreendidos. A estabilidade mecânica necessária para atingir grandes alturas requer aumento de diâmetro e, portanto, grandes custos para esse aumento poderiam ser atenuados com a realocação de investimentos em estruturas de apoio. Condições ambientais estressantes, como exposição ao vento, carga gravitacional e instabilidade de ancoragem em solos rasos, podem gerar demandas extras à estabilidade das árvores. Aqui, investigamos como as propriedades individuais e ambientais da árvore interagem para determinar a ocorrência de estruturas de suporte. A presença de raízes tabulares ou suporte e o diâmetro das árvores foram registrados em 8.415 árvores de 35 parcelas de 1 ha na Amazônia central. Em 67 árvores de duas espéciesalvo distribuídas pela topografia, também medimos a alometria e o tamanho da copa. A proporção de estruturas de suporte no nível da parcela e a probabilidade de ocorrência no nível individual foram modeladas com várias regressões lineares ou logísticas e árvores de regressão. A proporção de árvores com raízes tabulares foi maior nos baixios e platôs e raízes suporte foram mais frequentes nos baixios, quando mais inclinados. No nível individual, a probabilidade de ocorrência de qualquer estrutura de suporte aumentou com o diâmetro das árvores e nos baixios. Dentro das espécies, o diâmetro foi o preditor mais importante das raízes tabulares, mas 30% das espécies tiveram interações variadas e complexas com a inclinação e altitude do terreno. A ocorrência de estruturas de suporte foi mais provável em árvores robustas (menor proporção H: D), que possuíam áreas de copas menores. Em resumo, os ambientes mais instáveis, aqui representados pelos baixios com solos alagados, selecionaram uma maior frequência de árvores com estruturas de suporte no nível da comunidade. No entanto, relações alométricas coordenadas entre o tamanho do tronco e o tamanho da copa também influenciam a necessidade de estruturas de suporte. Assim, raízes tabulares e suporte não são características fixas da espécie, sua presença depende das relações alométricas de cada planta e das condições de instabilidade impostas pelo ambiente Determinants of the occurrence of buttress and stilt roots are still poorly understood. The mechanical stability required to reach large heights requires increasing diameter, and thus large construction costs that could be alleviated with reallocation of investments to support structures. Stressful environmental conditions such as exposure to wind, gravitational load and anchorage instability in shallow soils can place extra demands on the stability of trees. We here investigate how tree individual and environmental properties interact to determine the occurrence of support structures. Presence of buttress or stilt roots and tree diameter were recorded on 8.415 trees from 35 1-ha plots in central Amazon. On 67 trees of two target species distributed across topography, we also measured allometry and crown size. Proportion of support structures at the plot level and probability of occurrence at the individual level were modelled with multiple linear or logistic regressions, and boosted regression trees. The proportion of buttressed trees was higher in valleys and plateaus and stilt roots were more frequent in valleys, when more inclined. At the individual level, the probability of occurrence of any support structure increased with tree diameter and in valleys. Within species, diameter was the most important predictor of buttresses, but 30% of the species had varied and complex interactions with terrain slope and elevation. Occurrence of support structures was more likely on stout trees (lower H:D ratio), which had smaller crown areas. In summary, the most unstable environments, here represented by valleys with waterlogged soils, selected for a higher frequency of trees with support structures at the community level. However, coordinated allometric relationships among stem size and crown size also influence the need of support structures. Thus, support structures are not fixed species traits, their presence depending on individual plant´s allometric relationships and the instability conditions imposed by environment

Resumo Os relatórios do Painel Intergovernamental Sobre Mudanças Climáticas constantemente divulgam a possibilidade de que a ocorrência de extremos climáticos seja maior nos próximos anos. A Região Amazônica tem experimentado esses eventos com frequência, o que tem contribuído para que mais estudos acerca de sua susceptibilidade sejam realizados. Esse estudo objetivou identificar a resposta do microclima às secas de 2005 e 2010 em áreas de floresta nativa e de pastagem na Amazônia Ocidental por meio da análise da umidade específica do ar, temperatura do ar e saldo de radiação. Os dados utilizados são provenientes de torres pertencentes ao Programa de Grande Escala da Biosfera-Atmosfera na Amazônia. Os resultados indicam que nos anos estudados houveram alterações significativas nas variáveis estudadas em ambos os sítios, com reduções de aproximadamente 16% na umidade específica e aumentos de até 3,76% na temperatura. Entretanto, os efeitos da seca de 2010 podem ter sido amenizados na floresta devido ao evento ser precedido por um evento extremo de cheia (2009). Os resultados evidenciam o quanto a conversão de áreas de floresta para pastagem, aliado aos eventos extremos, pode interferir nas variáveis meteorológicas, sendo imprescindível o contínuo estudo dessa dinâmica para que as implicações microclimáticas sejam elucidadas. Abstract The reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change constantly reveal the possibility that climatic extremes will increase in the coming years. The Amazon Region has experienced these events frequently, which has contributed to the fact that more studies about its susceptibility are carried out. This study aimed to identify the microclimate response to droughts of 2005 and 2010 in areas of native forest and pasture in the Western Amazon by analyzing specific air humidity, air temperature and net radiation. The data used come from towers belonging to Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia. The results indicate that in the years studied there were significant changes in the variables studied at both sites, with reductions of approximately 16% in specific humidity and increases of up to 3.76% in temperature. However, the effects of the 2010 drought may have been softened in the forest due to the event being preceded by an extreme flood event (2009). The results show that the conversion of forest areas to pasture, together with extreme events, can interfere in the meteorological variables, being necessary the continuous study of this dynamics for the microclimatic implications to be elucidated.

In other words, it is a process that involves the gradual reconstruction of the forest, acting in the recovery of biodiversity, in the ecosystem and sustainable functioning, including other forms of life besides trees, together or in isolation. Thus, the present study had the general objective of evaluating Passive Restoration by analyzing ecological indicators in a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest, in the state of Alagoas. Two areas were selected, one in the process of passive restoration (AR) and a fragment of native forest as a Reference Ecosystem, the areas studied belong to a community close to the municipality of Arapiraca. The ecological indicators evaluated were: natural regeneration, litter supply, seed rain, edaphic fauna and pollination, in addition to the phytosociological analysis of tree vegetation. For the analysis of these indicators, 20 permanent plots of 250 m² were installed in each area, containing a sub-plot of 100 m² inside to evaluate the natural regeneration process. For the analysis of litter and seed rain, a 1m² collector was used. At the end, all litter (leaves, fruits, branches and flowers) present in the collection boxes was collected, packed in identified polyethylene bags and these bags were taken to the UFAL Biology Laboratory. The edaphic fauna data were obtained using the PROVID trap, where a bottle was buried in the soil until its edges were buried. The collected organisms were screened and identified at the order level. As a main result, it was observed that the AR differed from the ER only in the diversity of species, both from the arboreal stratum and from the regenerating stratum in the quantity of seeds contributed. As for the litter and edaphic fauna indicators, these did not differ in relation to the reference ecosystem. In view of the results obtained, it was found that the evaluated processes are recovering quickly in the area under restoration, presenting a trajectory that can lead it to the success of passive restoration. A restauração florestal pode ser conduzida por meio de iniciativas passivas, como a regeneração natural, ou ativas, com intervenção humana. Ou seja, trata-se de um processo que envolve a reconstrução gradual da floresta, atuando na recuperação da biodiversidade, no funcionamento ecossistêmico e sustentável, incluindo outras formas de vida além de árvores, em conjunto ou de forma isolada. Desta forma, o presente estudo teve como objetivo geral avaliar a Restauração Passiva analisando indicadores ecológicos em uma Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, no estado de Alagoas. Foram selecionadas duas áreas, uma em processo de restauração passiva (AR) e um fragmento de floresta nativa como Ecossistema de Referência, as áreas estudadas pertencem a uma comunidade próxima ao município de Arapiraca. Os indicadores ecológicos avaliados foram: regeneração natural, aporte de serapilheira, chuva de sementes, fauna edáfica e polinização, além da análise fitossociológica da vegetação arbórea. Para a análise destes indicadores, foram instaladas em cada área 20 parcelas permanentes de 250 m², contendo em seu interior uma subparcelas de 100 m² para avaliar o processo de regeneração natural. Para análise da serapilheira e da chuva de sementes fez-se uso de um coletor de 1m². Ao final, toda serapilheira (folhas, frutos, ramos e flores) presente nas caixas coletoras foi coletada, embalada em sacos de polietileno identificados e esses sacos levados ao Laboratório de Biologia da UFAL. Os dados de fauna edáfica foram obtidos por meio da armadilha PROVID, onde enterrou-se uma garrafa no solo até que suas bordas ficassem enterradas. Os organismos coletados foram triados e identificados a nível de ordem. As duas áreas apresentaram padrões semelhantes em relação a diversidade de ordens de polinizadores e a quantidade de indivíduos. Como resultado principal, observou-se que a AR se diferenciou do ER apenas na diversidade de espécies, tanto do estrato arbóreo como do estrato regenerante na quantidade de sementes aportadas. Quanto aos indicadores aporte de serapilheira e fauna edáfica, estes não diferiram em relação ao ecossistema de referência. Diante dos resultados obtidos, verificou-se que os processos avaliados estão se restabelecendo na área em restauração de forma rápida, apresentando uma trajetória que pode levá-la ao sucesso da restauração passiva.

Tropical forests are one of the most important ecosystems and loss of biological diversity in these is a major concern. We studied seven forest remnants on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, three medium-sized (24-63 ha) and four small (5-11 ha), to assess the influence of size, degree of disturbance and isolation on composition and diversity of the tree layer. A total of 443 species in 60 families and 185 genera were recorded, with Myrtaceae, Lauraceae and Fabaceae being the most species-rich families. The results showed areas of high α-diversity (α= 34.86-75.69) and a slightly greater decline of similarity with distance between the study areas. Remnant size not explained the variation in the species composition and we found correlation between the level of disturbance and the floristic composition. The remnants had low floristic similarity, strongly influenced by the degree of disturbance. Results suggest that disturbance influences composition and diversity and confirm the importance of including both medium-sized and small remnants in the conservation of tropical forest diversity. Resumo As florestas tropicais constituem um dos mais importantes ecossistemas mundiais e a perda da diversidade biológica é uma das grandes preocupações. Para avaliar a influência do tamanho, grau de perturbação e isolamento dos remanescentes florestais na composição e diversidade do estrato arbóreo, nós estudamos sete remanescentes florestais situados na costa do Rio de Janeiro, sudeste do Brasil, três de tamanho médio (24-63 ha) e quatro pequenos (5-11 ha). Um total de 443 espécies em 60 famílias e 185 gêneros foi registrado, sendo Myrtaceae, Lauraceae e Fabaceae as famílias mais ricas em espécies. Os resultados mostraram áreas de alta diversidade α (α= 34.86-75.69) e um declínio ligeiramente maior de similaridade com a distância entre as áreas estudadas. O tamanho do remanescente não explicou a variação na composição de espécies e nós encontramos correlação entre o nível de perturbação e a composição florística. Os remanescentes apresentaram baixa similaridade florística, fortemente influenciada pelo grau de perturbação. A relação entre riqueza de espécies e tamanho da área e isolamento não foi significativa. Os resultados sugerem que a perturbação influencia, de forma considerável, a composição e diversidade e confirma a importância da inclusão de remanescentes de tamanho médio e pequeno para a conservação da diversidade de florestas tropicais.

A mitigação de mudanças climáticas e preservação de ecossistemas depende da redução do desmatamento e degradação de florestas tropicais. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar imagens de radar, ópticas e termais para identificar desmatamentos por corte raso no período de 2016 a 2018 em uma área localizada no arco de desmatamento da Amazônia. Foram utilizadas imagens de radar em bandas X (satélite COSMO-SkyMed) e C (satélite SENTINEL-1A), índices de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI), índices de umidade por diferença normalizada (NDMI) e temperaturas da superfície terrestre (LST) (satélite Landsat-8). As áreas com evidências de antropismo mapeadas com base nas imagens do satélite COSMO-SkyMed no município de Novo Progresso (PA), período de 2016 a 2018, foram utilizadas como máscara inicial. Imagens de radar identificaram, com boa precisão relativa, as épocas e as áreas de desmatamento. NDVI e NDMI evidenciaram, respectivamente, quedas nas atividades fotossintéticas e nos níveis de biomassa nas áreas de desmatamento identificadas. Já a LST foi mais elevada nas áreas de rebrota em relação à vegetação densa. A análise do potencial de imagens de radar, ópticos e termais mostrou elevada relevância na detecção de desmatamento por corte raso em ambiente florestal úmido.

Information regarding the spatial distribution of palm trees in tropical forests is crucial for commercial exploitation and management. However, spatially continuous knowledge of palms occurrence is scarce and difficult to obtain with conventional approaches such as field inventories. Here, we developed a new method to map Amazonian palm species at the individual tree crown (ITC) level using RGB images acquired by a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Our approach is based on morphological operations performed in the score maps of palm species derived from a fully convolutional neural network model. We first constructed a labeled dataset by dividing the study area (135 ha within an old-growth Amazon forest) into 28 plots of 250 m×150 m. Then, we manually outlined all palm trees seen in RGB images with 4 cm pixels. We identified three palm species: Attalea butyracea, Euterpe precatoria and Iriartea deltoidea. We randomly selected 22 plots (80%) for training and six plots (20%) for testing. We changed the plots for training and testing to evaluate the variabilityn, in the classification accuracy and assess model generalization. Our method outperformed the average producer?s accuracy of conventional patch-wise semantic segmentation (CSS) in 4.7%. Moreover, our method correctly identified, on average, 34.7 percentage points more ITCs than CSS, which tended to merge trees that are close to each other. The producer's accuracy of A. butyracea, E. precatoria and I. deltoidea was 78.6 ± 5.5%, 8.6 ± 1.4% and 96.6 ± 3.4%, respectively. Fortunately, one of the most exploited and commercialized palm species in the Amazon (E. precatoria, a.k.a, Açaí) was mapped with the highest classification accuracy. Aim Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change. Methods We assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., ≥10cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to co‐occurring non‐palm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure. Results On average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of long‐term climate stability. Life‐form diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many non‐tree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of above‐ground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work. Conclusions Tree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests.

Accurate estimates of commercial volume in tropical forests are key for the implementation of sustainable forest management plans. Because of the lack of local or generic volumetric equations, most forest managers and forestry services are still using traditional expansion factors (i.e., multiplication of the diameter by a given value) to estimate the volume of commercial tree species in the Amazon. Volumetric models were developed through a unique data set of 1,264 fallen trees fully measured in 150 sample plots located across a broad range of forests in Amapá, Brazil. Forest-specific volumetric models were developed and compared with a generic (i.e., across all forests) model and with published equations developed elsewhere in the Amazon. The generic equation performed well in all forest types and allowed precise predictions. The most efficient sampling design to develop volumetric models consists of measuring approximately 50 trees across four different size classes representing the whole population. The form factors (FF) developed locally generated substantial bias but performed better than the traditional FF (0.7). Overall, our results suggest that it is possible to develop accurate generic models to estimate commercial timber volume, and this study can serve as a guideline for forest managers or scientists interested in calibrating volumetric models in a cost-efficient way. Study Implications: This work provides useful information on volumetric modeling methods for Brazilian Amazon tropical forests. Most of the studies in the literature only investigate the classical modeling using regression models considering only boom metrics with or without bark, and, in this way, they provide incomplete and biased total knowledge and estimates for a given population. Therefore, detailed and accurate analyzes are crucial tools for decisionmaking. If the harvesting interventions are carried out without considering the most appropriate method to estimate the total wood stock, there may be damages or even extinction of some species, as has happened with other forest domains in Brazil and in other rainforest regions in the world. In this work, the results clearly show the importance of testing different methodologies and selecting the one best suited for a particular site, as well as carrying out techniques for the sustainable and correct management of the forest. Because the analysis procedures provide only information on how methodologies behave statistically, our results may contribute to a more refined analysis to be applied in the future in similar environments. Currently, the Brazilian forestry sector is looking for alternatives to obtain forest resources within the concept of sustainability. Tropical forests hold significant amounts of carbon and play a critical role on Earth´s climate system. To date, carbon dynamics over tropical forests have been poorly assessed, especially over vast areas of the tropics that have been affected by some type of disturbance (e.g., selective logging, understory fires, and fragmentation). Understanding the multi-temporal dynamics of carbon stocks over human-modified tropical forests (HMTF) is crucial to close the carbon cycle balance in the tropics. Here, we used multi-temporal and high-spatial resolution airborne LiDAR data to quantify rates of carbon dynamics over a large patch of HMTF in eastern Amazon, Brazil. We described a robust approach to monitor changes in aboveground forest carbon stocks between 2012 and 2018. Our results showed that this particular HMTF lost 0.57 m·yr−1 in mean forest canopy height and 1.38 Mg·C·ha-1 yr-1 of forest carbon between 2012 and 2018. LiDAR-based estimates of Aboveground Carbon Density (ACD) showed progressive loss through the years, from 77.9 Mg·C·ha-1 in 2012 to 53.1 Mg·C·ha-1 in 2018, thus a decrease of 31.8%. Rates of carbon stock changes were negative for all time intervals analyzed, yielding average annual carbon loss rates of -1.34 Mg·C·ha−1·yr−1. This suggests that this HMTF is acting more as a source of carbon than a sink, having great negative implications for carbon emission scenarios in tropical forests. Although more studies of forest dynamics in HMTFs are necessary to reduce the current remaining uncertainties in the carbon cycle, our results highlight the persistent effects of carbon losses for the study area. Wildfires in humid tropical forests have become more common in recent years, increasing the rates of tree mortality in forests that have not co-evolved with fire. Estimating carbon emissions from these wildfires is complex. Current approaches rely on estimates of committed emissions based on static emission factors through time and space, yet these emissions cannot be assigned to specific years, and thus are not comparable with other temporally-explicit emission sources. Moreover, committed emissions are gross estimates, whereas the long-term consequences of wildfires require an understanding of net emissions that accounts for post-fire uptake of CO2. Here, using a 30 year wildfire chronosequence from across the Brazilian Amazon, we calculate net CO2 emissions from Amazon wildfires by developing statistical models comparing post-fire changes in stem mortality, necromass decomposition and vegetation growth with unburned forest plots sampled at the same time. Over the 30 yr time period, gross emissions from combustion during the fire and subsequent tree mortality and decomposition were equivalent to 126.1 Mg CO2 ha−1 of which 73% (92.4 Mg CO2 ha−1) resulted from mortality and decomposition. These emissions were only partially offset by forest growth, with an estimated CO2 uptake of 45.0 Mg ha−1over the same time period. Our analysis allowed us to assign emissions and growth across years, revealing that net annual emissions peak 4 yr after forest fires. At present, Brazil’s National Determined Contribution (NDC) for emissions fails to consider forest fires as a significant source, even though these are likely to make a substantial and long-term impact on the net carbon balance of Amazonia. Considering long-term post-fire necromass decomposition and vegetation regrowth is crucial for improving global carbon budget estimates and national greenhouse gases (GHG) inventories for tropical forest countries.

Rapid land-use/land cover changes (LULCC) have led to habitat loss and fragmentation in the natural forest areas, which are mainly due to the intense and rapid expansion of urban areas and intense agricultural management. These processes are strongly threatening biodiversity maintenance and the ecosystem services provided by them. Among the ecosystem services under threat, pollination has been widely studied since this service is essential to promote food production and, therefore, human well-being. In a scenario of increasing LULCC it is crucial to understand the interplay between these changes, pollination demand by insect-dependent crops and pollinator availability to ensure these ecosystem services meet the increased demand for food production. In this study, we developed a conceptual model to disentangle the relationships between human-nature, especially LULCC, and its consequences, to the delivery of pollination service. We also presented a case study in the Brazilian São Paulo state, where we modeled the effects of predicted LULCC associated to agriculture expansion between the years 2012 and 2030 on pollinator demand by crops and pollinator supply, for fourteen economically important crops. Additionally, we systematized an expert-based Ecosystem Service matrix to estimate the influences of LULCC on the provision of pollination. Our results showed that by 2030, the demand for pollination will increase by 40% on average, while pollinator supply, estimated using suitability values for the different land-use/cover classes, will show, on average, a 3% decrease. Our results highlight the importance of considering the dialogue among stakeholders, governments, institutions, and scientists to find alternatives and strategies to promote pollinator-friendly practices and safeguard the provision of pollination services in a future under LULCC. Resumo: As aceleradas mudanças de uso e cobertura do solo levaram à perda e fragmentação de habitat das florestas naturais, principalmente devido a uma intensa e rápida expansão de áreas urbanas e ao intensivo manejo agrícola. Esses processos ameaçam fortemente a manutenção da biodiversidade e os serviços ecossistêmicos associados. Entre os serviços ecossistêmicos ameaçados, a polinização tem sido amplamente estudada, pois se trata de um serviço essencial para a produção de alimentos e, consequentemente, para o bem-estar humano. Em um cenário de crescentes mudanças no uso e cobertura do solo, é crucial entender a interação entre essas mudanças, a demanda de polinização por culturas dependentes de insetos e a disponibilidade de polinizadores para garantir que esse serviço ecossistêmico atenda o aumento da demanda produtiva de alimentos. Neste estudo, desenvolvemos um modelo conceitual para evidenciar as relações homem-natureza, especialmente as consequências das mudanças de uso e cobertura do solo sobre a prestação do serviço de polinização. Nós também apresentamos um estudo de caso no estado brasileiro de São Paulo, onde modelamos os efeitos de mudanças de uso e cobertura do solo associados à expansão de agricultura entre os anos de 2012 e 2030 e as demandas e oferta de polinizadores por cultura, para quatorze culturas economicamente importantes. Além disso, sistematizamos uma matriz de serviços ecossistêmicos baseada em conhecimento de especialistas para estimar as influências das mudanças de uso e cobertura do solo na provisão do serviço de polinização. Nossos resultados mostraram que até 2030, a demanda por polinização aumentará em média 40%, enquanto a oferta de polinizadores estimada, usando valores de adequação para as diferentes classes de uso e cobertura do solo, terá uma redução média de 3%. Nossos resultados destacam a importância do diálogo entre agricultores e outros importantes agentes impulsionando as mudanças de uso do solo, governos, instituições e cientistas para encontrar alternativas e estratégias para promover práticas favoráveis aos polinizadores e salvaguardar a prestação de serviços de polinização em cenários futuros de mudanças de uso e cobertura do solo.

A dinâmica da composição florística de uma área de floresta primária, atingida por fogo, em 1997, na Amazônia brasileira, foi analisada, comparando-se dados de inventários amostrais, realizados nos anos de 1983, 1987, 1989, 1995, 2008 e 2012, em 12 parcelas permanentes de 0,25 hectares, com dados anteriores (14 anos) e posteriores ao incêndio (15 anos). A área de estudo está localizada em uma floresta ombrófila densa, sem histórico de distúrbios antrópicos, na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, oeste do estado do Pará. As questões deste estudo são as seguintes: (1) Qual o efeito de um primeiro incêndio na composição de espécies arbóreas de uma floresta primária na Amazônia? (2) Existe diferença, na diversidade de espécies arbóreas, antes e após o fogo? Para responder essas questões, (i) foram descritas, quantificadas e comparadas a composição de espécies arbóreas de antes e depois o fogo, (ii) foram quantificadas e comparadas a riqueza e a diversidade de espécies arbóreas de antes e após o fogo. Após 15 anos da ocorrência do incêndio, a floresta não registrou perdas em riqueza e diversidade de espécies arbóreas, indicando boa resiliência ao distúrbio. As alterações pós-fogo na composição florística de uma floresta primária são definidas, principalmente, pela entrada e saída de espécies localmente raras, e as espécies com maior densidade e área basal são responsáveis pela manutenção da estrutura da floresta, destacando-se dentre elas: Rinorea guianensis Aubl. e Protium apiculatum Swart. Pesquisas com o foco na criação de modelos para analisar a temperatura da superfície com sensoriamento remoto são muito importantes, pois servem como base de informações que auxiliarão no gerenciamento hidrológico, agrícola e ambiental. O presente estudo utilizou dados remotos na estimativa de temperatura da superfície em áreas de florestas secas, e seu objetivo foi verificar qual entre os produtos MODIS melhor representa a temperatura da superfície em áreas de caatinga. A área de estudo compreende uma caatinga preservada e outra em sucessão ecológica. Foram utilizadas como base espacial, dados de temperatura da superfície e de NDVI obtidos a partir do sensor MODIS e dados de temperatura do ar mensuradas por meio de estações agrometeorológicas de superfície. A análise se deu por regressão linear e coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre a temperatura estimada pelo satélite e do ar na superfície. Os resultados apresentaram variações temporais nas estimativas pelo MODIS, sendo que os produtos diurnos do Terra e noturnos do Aqua foram os que melhor representaram a temperatura máxima e mínima. Para isso, equações de ajustes são propostas para áreas de caatinga com diferentes tipos de cobertura. As variações na temperatura estavam de acordo com a sazonalidade do NDVI da floresta e, ao longo dos dezessete anos, foi verificado aumento nos valores de temperatura nas áreas de estudo. Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) A floresta amaz?nica desempenha importante papel no que tange ? servi?os ecossist?micos essenciais para o bem-estar humano, como o armazenamento de carbono e a regula??o clim?tica e do ciclo da ?gua, constituindo-se como um grande reservat?rio de carbono estocado na biomassa, amea?as ? floresta como o desmatamento e a degrada??o acarretam em mudan?as na din?mica clim?tica do planeta e o consequente aumento de temperatura terrestre. Diversos pa?ses t?m se empenhado em combater o aquecimento global e isso inclui a??es de pol?ticas p?blicas que visam reduzir o desmatamento. Para tal, ? necess?rio adquirir dados confi?veis sobre a quantifica??o do estoque de carbono associado ? biomassa florestal acima do solo (AGB). Devido ? grande extens?o da floresta amaz?nica brasileira, a quantifica??o da biomassa para se estimar o carbono enfrenta uma s?rie de desafios, acarretando em estimativas de estoque que diferem-se entre si. Um dos obst?culos para determinar a AGB vem da dificuldade de medir a altura das ?rvores, principalmente se tratando de florestas tropicais. A tecnologia LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerotransportada configura-se como uma alternativa para facilitar a coleta de informa??es da floresta em larga escala, possibilitando que a altura precisa da vegeta??o seja obtida. Levando-se em considera??o que o aumento em altura da planta ? influenciado diretamente pelo seu meio ambiente, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar e descrever a influ?ncia de alguns fatores ambientais na varia??o da altura m?xima das ?rvores na Amaz?nia Brasileira obtidas a partir de dados LiDAR. As nuvens de pontos LiDAR utilizadas referem-se a 753 transectos espalhados aleatoriamente por toda a Amaz?nia brasileira. J? as camadas dos fatores ambientais solo, topografia, clima e vegeta??o, foram obtidas de fontes governamentais confi?veis. Foi produzido um mapa com a distribui??o das alturas m?ximas na Amaz?nia brasileira, al?m de feitas an?lises de variabilidade das alturas dentro e entre os mapas de fatores ambientais. ?rvores com mais de 50 metros em altura est?o distribu?das praticamente em toda a regi?o, mas ?rvores acima de 80 metros foram observadas apenas ao Leste da Amaz?nia brasileira. As alturas m?ximas estavam presentes, predominantemente, em Argissolo e/ou Latossolo, ?reas caracterizadas pelo excesso de umidade durante o ano todo, solos formados por escudos cristalinos e em tipologia florestal ombr?fila densa de submontana. A altura apresentou menor vari?ncia, ou seja, mostrou-se mais homog?nea, quando estratificada pelo relevo, e maior vari?ncia, mais heterog?nea, quando estratificada pelo solo. The Amazon rainforest plays an important role concerning essential ecosystem services for human well-being, such as carbon storage and climate and water cycle regulation, making it a large carbon reservoir stored in biomass, threats to forests such as deforestation and degradation lead to changes in the planet's climatic dynamics and the consequent increase in global temperature. Several countries have been working to combat global warming and this includes public policy actions aimed at reducing deforestation. For that, it is necessary to acquire reliable data on the quantification of the carbon stock associated with the above-ground forest biomass (AGB). Due to the great extent of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, the quantification of biomass to estimate the carbon faces a series of challenges, resulting in stock estimates that differ from each other. One of the obstacles to determining AGB comes from the difficulty of measuring the height of trees, especially in the case of tropical forests. The airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technology is configured as an alternative to facilitate the collection of forest information on a large scale, enabling the precise height of the vegetation to be obtained. Taking into account that the increase in plant height is directly influenced by its environment, the objective of the present study was to analyze and describe the influence of some environmental factors in the variation of the maximum height of trees in the Brazilian Amazon Forest obtained from the LiDAR data. The LiDAR point clouds used, refer to 753 transects spread randomly throughout the Brazilian Amazon. The layers of the environmental factors: soil, topography, climate, and vegetation were obtained from reliable government sources. A map was produced with the distribution of maximum heights in the Brazilian Amazon, in addition to the analysis of the variability of the heights within and between maps of environmental factors. Trees over 50 meters in height are distributed practically throughout the region, but trees over 80 meters were observed only in the East of the Brazilian Amazon. The maximum heights were present, predominantly, in Argisol and/or Latosol, areas characterized by excessive humidity throughout the year, soils formed by crystalline shields and in dense sub-mountainous rainforest typology. The height presented less variance, that is, it was more homogeneous when stratified by the relief, and greater variance, more heterogeneous, when stratified by the soil.

Tropical forests are often located in dicult-to-access areas, which make high-quality forest structure information dicult and expensive to obtain by traditional field-based approaches. LiDAR (acronym for Light Detection And Ranging) data have been used throughout the world to produce time-ecient and wall-to-wall structural parameter estimates for monitoring in native and commercial forests. In this study, we compare products and aboveground biomass (AGB) estimations from LiDAR data acquired using an aircraft-borne system in 2015 and data collected by the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based GatorEye Unmanned Flying Laboratory in 2017 for ten forest inventory plots located in the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve in Acre state, southwestern Brazilian Amazon. The LiDAR products were similar and comparable among the two platforms and sensors. Principal dierences between derived products resulted from the GatorEye system flying lower and slower and having increased returns per second than the aircraft, resulting in a much higher point density overall (11.3 1.8 vs. 381.2 58 pts/m2). Dierences in ground point density, however, were much smaller among the systems, due to the larger pulse area and increased number of returns per pulse of the aircraft system, with the GatorEye showing an approximately 50% higher ground point density (0.27 0.09 vs. 0.42 0.09). The LiDAR models produced by both sensors presented similar results for digital elevation models and estimated AGB. Our results validate the ability for UAV-borne LiDAR sensors to accurately quantify AGB in dense high-leaf-area tropical forests in the Amazon. We also highlight new possibilities using the dense point clouds of UAV-borne systems for analyses of detailed crown structure and leaf area density distribution of the forest interior. Allometries that include height as independent variable usually provide greater accuracy on estimates of volume, biomass or individual carbon than other prediction strategies that rely only diameter at breast height as independent variable. However, when these models are applied in Amazon Forest Inventories, it is common to use estimated heights rather than measured heights to prepare volume, biomass or carbon estimates. This practice is common, but rarely discussed and the effect on predictions and precision is usually overlooked. The aim of this study was to examine hypsometric models and evaluate the effect of estimated height on merchantable volume prediction in Eastern Amazonian forests. The study area was a 3,786 ha Forest Management Unit owned by Jari Florestal S.A., in the Jari Valley Region of the State of Pará, Brazil. The data includes 16,099 trees of 25 species, measured and harvested in 2006. Ten percent of the data were reserved for validation of the hypsometric and volumetric estimates. Five hypsometric models and two modelling techniques (linear regression and mixed-effects model) were examined. The choice of best model was based on graphical analyses of residuals, distribution of residuals, heteroscedasticity of error and presence of outliers as assessed by h-values, DFFITS and Cook's distance. The hypsometric relationship and volumetric estimates using DBH and DBH with estimated height were validated with Graybill's test, Theil's error decomposition, Efficiency, Equivalence test and Tukey's test for species estimates level. Heights estimated using a semi-logarithmic mixed-effects model can improve predictions from volume equations. The results show that exploratory data analysis and validation process helped to provide estimates with greater efficiency and should be adopted in related studies. The prediction of height associated with volumetric models for six different species provided volumetric estimates with an error below 5% for the global average volume. The estimated height by the mixed-effect non-power law model should be included in double input models previously developed for volume prediction. Overexploitation is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss and local extinction. In the Brazilian Amazon, the intensive use of high-value timber species is leading to a decline in their populations. When in decline, these species can be replaced by less valuable and more common ones that are more feasible to exploit. We conducted interviews with residents of two communities in a sustainable development reserve in central Amazonia, and used free lists and the cognitive salience index (S) to assess the perceptions of residents regarding the occurrence and purpose of timber exploitation, and to identify possible endangered species in white-sand and terra-firme forests. In addition, to infer possible consequences of logging, we assessed the current population status of timber species cited by residents in forest-plot inventories carried out within the reserve. S-index values and interviewee reports suggested an intensive use of terra-firme timber species and an apparently recent increase in the exploitation of white-sand species, which did not use to be exploited because of their relatively low commercial value. The inventories showed that the white-sand timber species have high relative densities and low S values in contrast to the terra-firme species, which mostly have low relative densities and high S values. Our results highlight the need to identify and monitor relevant timber species in both terra-firme and white-sand forests, and to increase the involvement of the local community in the development of logging management practices. RESUMO A super-exploração madeireira é uma das principais causas de perda da biodiversidade e extinções locais. Na Amazônia brasileira o uso intensivo focado em poucas espécies tem levado à redução de suas populações e à substituição destas espécies, consideradas “nobres” pelo mercado madeireiro, por espécies “menos nobres” com populações ainda viáveis para exploração. Nós realizamos entrevistas com moradores de duas comunidades em uma reserva de desenvolvimento sustentável na Amazônia Central, e usamos listas livres e o Índice de Saliência Cognitiva (S) para elucidar percepções dos moradores sobre a exploração madeireira local e identificar possíveis espécies em risco em florestas de campinarana e terra-firme. Além disso, para inferir possíveis consequências da atividade madeireira, avaliamos o atual status populacional das espécies madeireiras citadas pelos moradores em inventários florestais realizados dentro da reserva. Os resultados do S e os relatos dos moradores sugerem o uso intensivo de espécies madeireiras de terra-firme e um aumento aparentemente recente da exploração de espécies de campinarana, antes desprezadas pelo baixo valor comercial. Os inventários mostram que espécies madeireiras de campinarana têm altas densidades relativas e baixos valores de S, em contraste com espécies de terra-firme, que, em sua maioria, apresentam baixas densidades relativas e altos valores de S. Nossos resultados ressaltam a necessidade de identificar e monitorar as populações de espécies madeireiras importantes, tanto em florestas de terra-firme quanto em campinaranas, e de involver os comunitários no desenvolvimento de políticas de manejo da exploração madeireira na reserva.

River, an important tributary of the Amazon River and considered one of the most sinuous rivers in the world, lacks scientific information when related to climatic and environmental variables, which end up imposing influences on the local social and economic organization. Understanding this past and future environmental dynamics is an important tool for managing the territory and it?s natural resources. In this sense, this study intends to reduce the information gap in the region with a study of the time series from 2001 to 2018 of climatic, hydrological variables, vegetation and fires, in addition to generating a future scenario of the water dynamics of the Juru? Basin with implications for ecosystems services. Monthly data on the average surface temperature, rain and soil moisture obtained from the reanalysis were used; heat source data obtained from MOD14V006 - active fire products; vegetation index - EVI and surface water index - NDFI, products of MOD13A3. All variables were characterized by means of descriptive statistics, Boxplot, Principal Component Analysis-ACP, Correlation and the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt trend analysis tests were applied. The ARIMA model was used to simulate future changes to the NDFI, then trend tests were applied. All processing took place in software R version 3.5.1. The years with the lowest average monthly rainfall in the series were 2010 (155.62 mm), 2016 (163.15 mm) and 2005 (169.93 mm) also observed for soil moisture 2005 (435 mm) and 2016 (448 mm ); the years with the highest monthly average rainfall were 2009 (207.31 mm) and 2014 (202.80 mm), with the highest values of flooded areas in January, 23,772 km2. The highest concentration of fire outbreaks occurred in August (1,142) and September (1,547), coinciding with the lowest NDFI values found (1,421 km2 and 890 km2), with the years 2005 and 2010 with the largest records of outbreaks: 5,427 and 4,559. The EVI presented the highest values in the months of October (0.566), November (0.573) and December (0.560), the beginning of the rainy season and the lowest values in June (0.502) and July (0.503), coinciding with the period of lower precipitation and average temperature. The years 2015 with 22,275 km2 and 2009 with 16,140 km2 with the largest records of flooded area, and 2010 with 1,764 km2 and 2005 with 1,967 km2 with the lowest records. The ACP pointed out rain as the variable with the greatest influence on the dynamics of the Juru? basin with a contribution of 0.98, followed by the outbreaks of fire with -0.90. The NDFI showed a high correlation with rain, which in turn proved to be closely linked to the environmental dynamics of the Juru? River basin, with direct responses in the behavior of vegetation, the river's water dynamics and the occurrence of fires, thereby allowing the generation of a reliable future scenario based on ARIMA modeling, with an expression of seasonality and a significant tendency to decrease flooded areas by 2030. Leaf Area Index (LAI) models that consider all phenological stages have not been developed for the Caatinga, the largest seasonally dry tropical forest in South America. LAI models that are currently used show moderate to high covariance when compared to in situ data, but they often lack accuracy in the whole spectra of possible values and do not consider the impact that the stems and branches have over LAI estimates, which is of great influence in the Caatinga. In this study, we develop and assess PAI (Plant Area Index) and LAI models by using ground-based measurements and satellite (Landsat) data. The objective of this study was to create and test new empirical models using a multi-year and multi-source of reflectance data. The study was based on measurements of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) from above and below the canopy during the periods of 2011?2012 and 2016?2018. Through iterative processing, we obtained more than a million candidate models for estimating PAI and LAI. To clean up the small discrepancies in the extremes of each interpolated series, we smoothed out the dataset by fitting a logarithmic equation with the PAI data and the inverse contribution of WAI (Wood Area Index) to PAI, that is the portion of PAI that is actually LAI (LAIC). LAIC can be calculated as follows: LAIC = 1 (WAI/PAI)). We subtracted the WAI values from the PAI to develop our in situ LAI dataset that was used for further analysis. Our in situ dataset was also used as a reference to compare our models with four other models used for the Caatinga, as well as the MODIS-derived LAI products (MCD15A3H/A2H). Our main findings were as follows: (i) Six models use NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index) and EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) as input, and performed well, with r2 ranging from 0.77 to 0.79 (PAI) and 0.76 to 0.81 (LAI), and RMSE with a minimum of 0.41m2m?2 (PAI) and 0.40m2m?2 (LAI). The SAVI models showed values 20% and 32% (PAI), and 21% and 15% (LAI) smaller than those found for the models that use EVI and NDVI, respectively; (ii) the other models (ten) use only two bands, and in contrast to the first six models, these new models may abstract other physical processes and components, such as leaves etiolation and increasing protochlorophyll. The developed models used the near-infrared band, and they varied only in relation to the inclusion of the red, green, and blue bands. (iii) All previously published models and MODIS-LAI underperformed against our calibrated models. The new environmental conditions imposed by disturbance events often create a mosaic of spots in different successional stages. Our objective was to describe the temporal variation of a semideciduous seasonal forest based on its anthropic disturbance history, verifying possible changes in forest dynamics and structure. We sampled the arboreal vegetation with a diameter at breast height (1.3 m above the ground; DBH) ≥ 5 cm in 15 permanent plots of 20 × 20 m where we performed four inventories (2003, 2005, 2007 and 2015). We observed a density decrease and a basal area increase, which indicates the late successional stage of the analyzed tree community. The phytosociological structure, richness and species diversity of the tree community did not show changes throughout the monitoring. However, the Protium spruceanum predominance may be a response to the environmental changes caused by the mining occurred in the area 250 years ago. The anthropic disturbances enduring influences make this type of work indispensable because it allows the ecological processes understanding, allowing a factual management of the forests by the its effective management and conservation. Resumo As novas condições ambientais impostas por eventos de distúrbios criam um mosaico de manchas em diferentes estágios sucessionais. Nosso objetivo foi descrever a variação temporal de uma floresta estacional semidecidual em função do histórico de perturbação antrópica, verificando possíveis mudanças na dinâmica e estrutura da floresta. Nós amostramos a vegetação arbórea com diâmetro a 1,3 m do solo (DAP) ≥ 5 cm em 15 parcelas permanentes de 20 × 20 m onde realizamos quatro inventários (2003, 2005, 2007 e 2015). Nós verificamos uma diminuição da densidade e aumento da área basal, o que indica que a comunidade arbórea analisada se encontra em estágio tardio de sucessão. A estrutura fitossociológica, a riqueza e a diversidade de espécies da comunidade arbórea não apresentaram mudanças ao longo dos monitoramentos. Entretanto, o predomínio da espécie Protium spruceanum pode ser uma resposta às mudanças ambientais provocadas pela mineração que ocorreu na área há 250 anos. As influências duradouras dos distúrbios antrópicos tornam este tipo de trabalho imprescindível por permitir a compreensão dos processos ecológicos, possibilitando um gerenciamento factual das florestas pelo manejo e conservação efetivos.

Size-resolved measurements of atmospheric aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations and hygroscopicity were conducted over a full seasonal cycle at the remote Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO, March 2014–February 2015). In a preceding companion paper, we presented annually and seasonally averaged data and parametrizations (Part 1; Pöhlker et al., 2016a). In the present study (Part 2), we analyze key features and implications of aerosol and CCN properties for the following characteristic atmospheric conditions:Empirically pristine rain forest (PR) conditions, where no influence of pollution was detectable, as observed during parts of the wet season from March to May. The PR episodes are characterized by a bimodal aerosol size distribution (strong Aitken mode with DAit  ≈  70 nm and NAit  ≈  160 cm−3, weak accumulation mode with Dacc  ≈  160 nm and Nacc ≈  90 cm−3), a chemical composition dominated by organic compounds, and relatively low particle hygroscopicity (κAit ≈  0.12, κacc ≈  0.18).Long-range-transport (LRT) events, which frequently bring Saharan dust, African biomass smoke, and sea spray aerosols into the Amazon Basin, mostly during February to April. The LRT episodes are characterized by a dominant accumulation mode (DAit  ≈  80 nm, NAit  ≈  120 cm−3 vs. Dacc  ≈  180 nm, Nacc  ≈  310 cm−3), an increased abundance of dust and salt, and relatively high hygroscopicity (κAit ≈  0.18, κacc  ≈  0.35). The coarse mode is also significantly enhanced during these events.Biomass burning (BB) conditions characteristic for the Amazonian dry season from August to November. The BB episodes show a very strong accumulation mode (DAit  ≈  70 nm, NAit  ≈  140 cm−3 vs. Dacc  ≈  170 nm, Nacc  ≈  3400 cm−3), very high organic mass fractions ( ∼  90 %), and correspondingly low hygroscopicity (κAit ≈  0.14, κacc  ≈  0.17).Mixed-pollution (MPOL) conditions with a superposition of African and Amazonian aerosol emissions during the dry season. During the MPOL episode presented here as a case study, we observed African aerosols with a broad monomodal distribution (D  ≈  130 nm, NCN, 10  ≈  1300 cm−3), with high sulfate mass fractions (∼  20 %) from volcanic sources and correspondingly high hygroscopicity (κ ≈  0.14, κ > 100 nm ≈  0.22), which were periodically mixed with fresh smoke from nearby fires (D  ≈  110 nm, NCN, 10  ≈  2800 cm−3) with an organic-dominated composition and sharply decreased hygroscopicity (κ ≈  0.10, κ > 150 nm ≈  0.20).Insights into the aerosol mixing state are provided by particle hygroscopicity (κ) distribution plots, which indicate largely internal mixing for the PR aerosols (narrow κ distribution) and more external mixing for the BB, LRT, and MPOL aerosols (broad κ distributions).The CCN spectra (CCN concentration plotted against water vapor supersaturation) obtained for the different case studies indicate distinctly different regimes of cloud formation and microphysics depending on aerosol properties and meteorological conditions. The measurement results suggest that CCN activation and droplet formation in convective clouds are mostly aerosol-limited under PR and LRT conditions and updraft-limited under BB and MPOL conditions. Normalized CCN efficiency spectra (CCN divided by aerosol number concentration plotted against water vapor supersaturation) and corresponding parameterizations (Gaussian error function fits) provide a basis for further analysis and model studies of aerosol–cloud interactions in the Amazon.

O fogo é um dos principais causadores de degradação nos ecossistemas Amazônicos, sendo amplamente utilizado para o manejo e transformação da cobertura da terra em diferentes usos. A sua utilização indiscriminada torna os ambientes afetados mais vulneráveis a impactos climáticos e antrópicos. Durante a queima, a combustão do material orgânico libera o gás dióxido de carbono (CO2), principal responsável pelo efeito estufa. Embora o seu controle seja de extrema relevância, há muitas incertezas associadas às ferramentas de detecção e mapeamento de áreas queimadas por meio de sensoriamento remoto. Uma das mais difundidas abordagens utilizadas para o mapeamento de queimadas na Amazônia Brasileira é o Modelo Linear de Mistura Espectral (MLME), baseado na resposta espectral de alvos puros. Este trabalho analisou o desempenho da integração do algoritmo Fmask aplicado ao MLME, uma vez que o algoritmo Fmask pode refinar os dados gerados pelo MLME. Foram testadas imagens do sensor Operational Land Imager (OLI - Landsat 8) e do sensor Multispectral Instrument (MSI - Sentinel-2A) em coberturas de Floresta e Não Floresta para subsidiar a detecção de áreas queimadas. A área de estudo está localizada no sul do estado do Pará, no bioma Amazônia. Os resultados apresentaram uma exatidão global acima de 99% para o mapeamento gerado a partir do refinamento dos dados do MLME pelo Fmask em ambos os sensores. A acurácia do produtor foi acima de 97%, enquanto que a acurácia do usuário foi entre 77,54% e 95%. O resultado do índice Kappa no mapeamento via Fmask na imagem do sensor OLI para áreas de cobertura de Floresta e Não Floresta foi de 0,93, e 0,97, respectivamente. Para o sensor MSI, os resultados do índice Kappa para as duas classes foram 0,87 e 0,88, respectivamente. A integração do algoritmo Fmask ao MLME possibilitou diminuir o tempo de processamento dos dados com alta acurácia nos resultados finais. Esta abordagem se apresenta como uma potencial ferramenta de automatização do refinamento do mapeamento de áreas queimadas na Amazônia Brasileira podendo ser aplicada inclusive em uma perspectiva de multi-sensores.

A floresta Amazônica apresenta espécies de elevado potencial para exploração sustentável de madeira, entretanto, para que sejam exploradas, há a necessidade de informações para estimativas precisas de seu volume de madeira. Assim, com a hipótese de que volumes estimados por diferentes métodos e os obtidos pela cubagem rigorosa são estatisticamente iguais entre si, este trabalho teve por objetivo comparar estimativas volumétricas obtidas através do fator de forma, modelos volumétricos e modelo de afilamento para cinco espécies comerciais da floresta amazônica. Foram cubadas 449 árvores pelo método de Smalian para desenvolvimento do fator de forma e ajuste das equações volumétricas e de afilamento. Foi utilizado o delineamento blocos ao acaso, onde cada espécie foi considerada como um bloco e cada método de obtenção volumétrica compôs um tratamento. Foi aplicada a análise de variância para verificar a existência de diferença significativa entre os tratamentos e entre os blocos, seguida do teste de Tukey para o nível crítico . Entre os modelos ajustados, o de Schumacher-Hall foi o que apresentou maior precisão para estimar o volume. O fator de forma médio estimado é 0,73. Não houve diferenças estatísticas na estimativa do volume utilizando os diferentes métodos, contudo, recomenda-se utilizar o modelo de simples entrada, pois a altura para espécies amazônicas é de difícil obtenção, fazendo deste método o mais prático.

We performed a forest growth dynamics study in Acre State, Brazilian southwestern Amazon, where a 20 ha area was logged in 1992. The study was based permanent sample plots (1 ha) established in the logged area and in an unlogged forest immediately after logging operations finished. Forest dynamics parameters were assessed in terms of aboveground dried biomass (AGB). During the study period, three extreme climate events triggered a high impact on both logged and unlogged areas, producing AGB losses greater than those estimated for logging. Twenty years after logging, ingrowth and mortality rates were similar to those expected in an undisturbed forest, and AGB recovery was significantly faster in the logged areas. Forest management, when properly applied, can promote faster forest AGB recovery. We suggest that forest management could be considered as an alternative to adapt to extreme climate events, by promoting controlled disturbances, which should minimize tree mortality and biomass loss. Foi conduzido um estudo sobre a dinâmica de crescimento em floresta localizada no Estado do Acre na Amazônia sul ocidental, onde uma área de 20 ha foi explorada para extração de madeira em 1992. O estudo foi baseado em parcelas permanentes (1 ha) estabelecidas dentro da área explorada e na floresta não manejada, imediatamente após o fim das operações florestais. Os parâmetros da dinâmica florestal foram analisados em termos da biomassa seca acima do solo (BAS). Durante o período do estudo três eventos climáticos extremos causaram um elevado impacto tanto nas áreas exploradas como nas não perturbadas por exploração, produzindo perdas de biomassa superiores às estimadas para a exploração. Vinte anos após a exploração, as taxas de ingresso e mortalidade foram semelhantes às esperadas em uma área de floresta não perturbada por exploração e a recuperação da BAS foi significativamente mais alta nas áreas cortadas. Quando praticado de forma adequada, o manejo de floresta pode promover uma recuperação da BAS mais rápida. Nós sugerimos que o manejo florestal pode ser considerado como uma alternativa para adaptação a eventos extremos de clima por meio da promoção de perturbações controladas que minimizem a mortalidade de árvores e a perda de biomassa.

Aim: Tropical forests account for a quarter of the global carbon storage and a third of the terrestrial productivity. Few studies have teased apart the relative importance of environmental factors and forest attributes for ecosystem functioning, especially for the tropics. This study aims to relate aboveground biomass (AGB) and biomass dynamics (i.e., net biomass productivity and its underlying demographic drivers: biomass recruitment, growth and mortality) to forest attributes (tree diversity, community-mean traits and stand basal area) and environmental conditions (water availability, soil fertility and disturbance). Location: Neotropics. Methods: We used data from 26 sites, 201 1-ha plots and >92,000 trees distributed across the Neotropics. We quantified for each site water availability and soil total exchangeable bases and for each plot three key community-weighted mean functional traits that are important for biomass stocks and productivity. We used structural equation models to test the hypothesis that all drivers have independent, positive effects on biomass stocks and dynamics. Results: Of the relationships analysed, vegetation attributes were more frequently associated significantly with biomass stocks and dynamics than environmental conditions (in 67 vs. 33% of the relationships). High climatic water availability increased biomass growth and stocks, light disturbance increased biomass growth, and soil bases had no effect. Rarefied tree species richness had consistent positive relationships with biomass stocks and dynamics, probably because of niche complementarity, but was not related to net biomass productivity. Community-mean traits were good predictors of biomass stocks and dynamics. Main conclusions: Water availability has a strong positive effect on biomass stocks and growth, and a future predicted increase in (atmospheric) drought might, therefore, potentially reduce carbon storage. Forest attributes, including species diversity and community-weighted mean traits, have independent and important relationships with AGB stocks, dynamics and ecosystem functioning, not only in relatively simple temperate systems, but also in structurally complex hyper-diverse tropical forests.

This work augments research on masting for the economically important tropical tree Carapa guianensis Aublet, specifically on whether determinants of mast years vary regionally, spatially, and due to longer term ENSO climate patterns. Longer term measurements (an 11-year period in Acre and Roraima, 4 years and 8 months in Amapá) from three regions of the Brazilian Amazon allowed for the analysis of whether climate cues were regionally consistent for this species. We used generalized linear mixed models, to determine which factors were significant in predicting whether trees would produce in a given year and to model the seed production quantity. We found a positive effect of increasing the diameter at breast height (dbh) on the quantity and likelihood of seed production. Our results also suggested that ecosystems and climate cues may jointly affect seed production. In flooded forests, increases in dry season rainfall had a negative impact on the likelihood of seed production whilst none of the precipitation variables investigated influenced the quantity of seeds produced. In drier terra firme forests in Acre with extended dry seasons, increases in dry season precipitation had significant and positive impacts on both the likelihood and the quantity of seed production. Our results illustrate the importance of considering plant habitat and climate to better understand individual and regional differences in seed production and their responses to inter-annual climate variation.
