Mangrove forests are broadly recognized to support a variety of ecosystem services on coastal margins worldwide. These services may significantly contribute to the wellbeing of millions of people, but there is limited information about their importance in the Global South. This study mapped for the first time the flow of ecosystem services in Brazilian Amazon mangroves, which represent over 700,000 ha of mangroves in the country. We also identified the spatial changes in the flow of services across coastal landscapes, including urban, agricultural upland areas and coastal natural protected areas. Our matrix model indicated that mangroves, waterbodies, sandflats and mudflats are critical to the flow of multiple ecosystem services, including provisioning (fish, mariculture), cultural (historical and intrinsic value, research, and education), and regulation (climate, flood control, nursery, and breeding grounds). Social economic context, occupation, education, and residence time are important factors influencing villagers to identify the flow of ecosystem services, which could be compared across other coastal marine reserves in South America that have similar management of natural resources. Adjacent coastal upland habitats such as forests and croplands are important to support many provisioning ecosystem services to coastal villagers that would otherwise be obtained from mangroves, suggesting that protecting these connected habitats and supporting small-scale agriculture may help to avoid deforestation of mangrove forests. As over 80% of the mangroves in the country are managed as extractive reserves and may support communities with comparable socio-economic characteristics, we provide a foundation for the development and replication of ecosystem services assessments in Brazilian mangroves, which cover an area of over 1 million hectares. Our work highlights the importance of mangrove forests in providing food, and cultural services and to increase local climate resilience of coastal villages in the Amazon coast.

A specimen of common thresher shark Alopias vulpinus (Bonnaterre 1788) was caught in a fishing net in the waters off Piran (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea). It was a juvenile male with a total length of 2841 mm. In recent decades, other cases of juvenile specimens of common thresher shark have been recorded in Slovenian coastal waters. Despite the drastic decline in the population of this species, thresher shark continues to be caught in local Adriatic fisheries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The province of Sorsogon in the Philippines has a strong history of introducing farmed seaweeds and subsequently assembling farmers who put together the required enthusiasm to ensure successful production. Ulva is a green seaweed that has a wide range of commercial uses. Its farming, therefore, presents a promising opportunity for fishers to diversify their income streams and reduce their reliance on fishing. Using survey-based responses collected from fishers in Bulusan, Sorsogon, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of the local Ulva resources and the willingness of fishers to engage in Ulva farming, including identifying the challenges that may hinder its adoption. Our findings revealed that most Bulusanon fishers were knowledgeable about Ulva resources and could identify barriers to farming. They were generally receptive to engaging in farming Ulva, primarily due to the perceived economic benefits. Fishers with considerable knowledge about Ulva distribution were more likely to farm. While most Bulusanon fishers desired to farm Ulva, they were unlikely to be willing to learn, invest, or spend time doing it. Fishers may lack the desire to farm because, in part, it requires different skill sets as well as the challenges associated with marketing. This study provides valuable insights into the development of targeted interventions to promote the adoption of Ulva farming in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) is one of the fish species whose production in freshwater aquaculture may increase in the next few years. One method of producing this species is to create monosex stocks of pike, as females grow faster, mature later and gain larger body sizes. They can be obtained in the process of gynogenesis. The aim of this research was to determine and optimize the conditions of UV irradiating European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) spermatozoa to inactivate them genetically (first experiment). The aim of this study was also to confirm whether perch spermatozoa can be used to induce northern pike gynogenesis using thermal shock (second experiment). During first experiment the highest rate of haploid larvae (29.9 ± 0.85%) was noted in the group inseminated with perch sperm irradiated for 6 min (1548 J m-2). No viable embryos were observed in groups of eggs inseminated with sperm irradiated for more than 10 minutes (2580 J m-2). The heat shock applied 12 or 14 min after gamete activation, for 3 or 5 min at 34.0°C, resulted in obtaining of gynogenetic specimen due to retention of the second polar body in all experimental groups. The most efficient was heat shock applied 14 min after gamete activation and lasting 3 min, and resulted in 18.5 ± 1.3% of gynogenetic larvae for female B. Heat shock applied 12 min after gamete activation, lasting 3 min was also effective in the case of female A, resulting in obtaining of 16.5 ± 2.1% gynogenetic specimen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decommissioning of offshore petroleum installations is innately risky and adversely affects the livelihoods of fishing communities' dependent on access to the marine resources. However, it remains unclear how Ghana's legislative framework addresses the protection of local livelihoods during the decommissioning of its first offshore installation, the Saltpond Oil and Gas Field. We designed a case study to explore the legislative responses and impact of decommissioning on the livelihoods of fishers in five affected fishing communities in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana. The primary data used in this study was through the survey of 191 fishers and interview of representatives of state institutions relevant to this study. We found that Ghana's legislative framework for decommissioning did not adequately address negative impacts on local fishing communities whose livelihoods were greatly disrupted due to these activities. We recommend that detailed guidelines are incorporated in the legislative framework before further decommissioning is undertaken and that the government provide alternative livelihood options to the impacted communities. Over the past several decades, concern has grown over the rising mortality of the Amazon river dolphin ('boto') from increased human–dolphin interactions. Among these interactions are tourist attractions involving up-close feeding encounters with the botos, confrontations with fishers, and an illegal fishing practice that uses dolphin flesh as fish bait. Drawing on original data sourced from in-depth semi-structured interviews and household surveys, existing studies on boto habitat preferences and seasonal movement, and remotely-sensed data, this paper discusses the spatial and temporal overlap between humans and dolphins in a region outside of Manaus, Amazonas in the central Brazilian Amazon. Results suggest that there is considerable spatial overlap between boto habitat and spaces used for fishing and tourism activities; additionally, overall potential for conflict is greatest during the high-water season. HISTORICAL analysis , *HISTORY education , *FISHERS - Abstract
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially claims that Japan had discovered Takeshima (Dokdo) since the seventeenth century, but this article argues that quite to the contrary, Isotakeshima Oboegaki, a primary source that confirms Japan's recognition of Dokdo as Korean territory, clearly corrects this claim. Isotakeshima Oboegaki's importance can be explained in three ways. First, Japan's official position regarding Dokdo wrongly conflates different uses of "Takeshima" depending on historical context and ignores that it was because of a paucity of Japanese sources confirming Japanese ownership over Takeshima (Ulleungdo) and a comparative certainty from the Korean government, forcing a reluctant Bakufu to admit the deficit in historical evidence and order that Japanese fishermen cannot trespass into Ulleungdo. Second, Isotakeshima Oboegaki was not just a document of its time but a key primary source that the Meiji government invoked as undeniable evidence to officially declare in the Dajokan Directive that neither Dokdo nor Ulleungdo were under Japanese sovereignty due to a paucity of evidence. Finally, Isotakeshima Oboegaki terminates Japan's logic regarding Dokdo because it contradicts the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' claim of "original discovery" regarding Dokdo and Ulleungdo and corrects the mistaken notion of terra nullius. This paper adopts the multinomial endogenous treatment effect approach to analyze the impact of innovation choices on the income of 230 fish workers in the Greater Accra and Central regions of Ghana, while the Kendall's ranking technique is applied to analyze the constraints to innovation. Findings show that technological and non-technological innovations available to fish workers have positive impacts on their income. Specifically, savings, credit access, and support service are identified to have positive impacts on income while gender and membership of a fish workers' association have negative impacts on income. The most pressing constraints to innovation faced by female fish workers are cultural/ethnic restrictions, social exclusion, and time constraints. On the other hand, a high dependency ratio and discrimination in access to resources are the most pressing constraints faced by male fish workers. The paper recommends that stakeholders should continue to offer support services to fish workers. In addition, lending institutions should make credit accessible at lower interest rates. Interventions by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and development agencies that aim to solve constraints of fish workers should be approached from a gender dimension. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between aspects of personal life-skills values and the efforts of traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis in dealing with poverty. Design/Methodology/Approach: The sample consisted of 333 owners of households of traditional fishermen in Kuala Perlis, Malaysia. A Pearson correlation test was used to achieve the research objectives. Findings: The findings indicated that the fishermen's efforts were good in dealing with poverty. However, the local fishermen of Kuala Perlis still live in poverty. Conclusion: According to the study, fishermen's poverty was probably caused by the need for continual improvement in various life skills. This would help them deal with poverty more effectively. Research Implications: The implication of this study was that traditional fishermen should improve their life skills in order to reduce the poverty they experience. This was proven by Pearson's correlation analysis which showed a positive relationship between the constructs. Practical Implications: Traditional fishermen need to strengthen themselves with knowledge related to the value of personal skills in order to deal with family poverty. Contribution to Literature: In the context of literature, this research contributes to the study of poverty among traditional fishermen especially in the aspect of self-skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abuse of position for a sexual purpose (APSP) in police officers is a serious form of corruption that often re-victimises highly vulnerable people such as victims of domestic abuse and rape. It is thought to be underreported by victims because they fear disbelief and negative repercussions. As a consequence, such behaviour may go undetected for a long time. Using a content analysis of 10 completed APSP investigations conducted by an English police force, the research explored the characteristics and behaviour of both the police officers and victims involved. The results suggest that there may be differences in behaviours and victim selection within APSP perpetrators. Two perpetrator types are tentatively suggested: the shark and the fisherman. The shark is characterised by those who make rapid sexual contact with a specifically targeted highly vulnerable victim, often causing lasting harm. The fisherman uses a more tentative approach, casting a wide net to many potential victims (with similarities to grooming) but often failing to make sexual contact. The behaviour of both offending styles, and the implications for internal police investigations, is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined factors affecting fishers' interest in participating in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing at Elmina fishing community in the Central Region of Ghana. The study additionally inquired of respondents if they would be willing to submit to an HIV test and, if so, if they knew where to go for the test. The study also looked at the barriers that prevented fishers from getting tested for HIV. A cross‐sectional convergent parallel mixed‐method design was used to examine 385 fishers who were at least 18 years old and engaged in any form of fishing activity. Only about 9% of respondents reported having ever tested for HIV. Although the overall testing rate was low, the results indicate a higher testing rate in females than among males. Multivariate analysis shows that sex, age and type of fishing occupation are significant predictors of willingness to test for HIV among the study participants. Even though many people in the study location may know where to get tested for HIV, they are unwilling to do so. Many residents of the research area may be aware of where to get tested for HIV, but they are unwilling to go. This suggests a lack of enthusiasm due to misunderstandings and misconceptions about what HIV testing uptake entails. Additionally, stigmatization is a significant barrier to the acceptance of HIV testing in the study area and needs to be reduced by increased education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although small‐scale fisheries and aquaculture provide opportunities to increase fish yield to supplement rural food and income, they remain undeveloped in Ghana. To contribute towards the development of the sectors, this study sought to assess the biology and ecology of Oreochromis niloticus and Sarotherodon melanotheron in the Brimsu reservoir to provide the requisite information for their management. From the results, mean temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and transparency of the reservoir were 30.03 ± 0.27°C, 3.78 ± 0.38 mg/L, 8.30 ± 0.21 and 69.79 ± 1.76 cm, respectively. S. melanotheron had a sex ratio of 1:1.36; with mean condition factors of 2.177 ± 0.089 and 2.06 ± 0.029 (p = 0.08) for males and females, respectively. The sex ratio of O. niloticus was 1.45: 1; with mean condition factors of 2.208 ± 0.012 and 2.257 ± 0.014 (p = 0.07) for males and females, respectively. Both species exhibited positive allometric growth with no significant differences between the condition factors for males and females. In addition, there was no significant difference between the sex ratios for S. melanotheron but the number of males of O. niloticus was significantly higher than the females (p ˂ 0.05). Size at sexual maturity (Lm), form factor (a3.0), growth coefficient (K), asymptotic length (L∞) and natural mortality (M) of S. melanotheron were 18.00 cm, 0.020, 0.42 year−1, 30.32 cm and 0.64 year−1, respectively. For O. niloticus Lm, a3.0, K, L∞ and M were 18.57 cm, 0.0223, 0.26 year−1, 38.42 cm and 0.41 year−1, respectively. However, the catch per unit effort for O. niloticus was higher than that of S. melanotheron throughout the study period. The conditions of the reservoir were favourable for the growth of these cichlids. It is recommended that measures should be put in place for the sustainable management and exploitation of fish stocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indonesian government has established measurable fishing regulations by Government Regulation 11/2023 to protect and sustain fishery resources. This policy is unsuitable for small fishermen's needs and has resulted in mass demonstrations in South Papua. Data were conducted with the fishermen demonstrators (n=100) by participation observation, in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The results showed fishermen refused the regulated fishing regulations for vessels <30 GT as far as 12 miles, simplify the licensing process, increase the fuel quota and repeal mooring requirements only at the Merauke fishing port. Formulating laws and regulations for fisheries management requires a combination of ecological, economic, and sociocultural principles to sustain fisheries systems. Stakeholder involvement must be implemented into every policy design and decision-making stage by integrating fishermen's perspectives in the fishing business. Integrating fishermen's points of view can be a benchmark for the suitability of fishermen needs and sustainability of fisheries resources in each region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The worlds of recreational fishing (on foot, on board, etc.) share the same maritime and coastal areas as those of professional fishing. Some practices compete in a context of resource scarcity. In this plural world of recreational fishing, social practices are differentiated by their representations of the sea, the resources fished, or the fishing techniques, and by the interests they defend respectively. In the context of the Hauts-de-France (côte d'Opale), the concept of myth is explored based on analyses of the discourse of fishermen and their practices;. This article highlights the existing differences between the worlds of recreational and professional fishing and their respective legitimacy to occupy the maritime areas, particularly in what this implies from the normative point of view (quotas, tolerated practices, prohibited practices, etc.). The fishing port of Pantai Pondok Dadap Sendang Biru, located in the coastal area of South Malang, East Java Province, Indonesia, serves as an essential hub for sustainable fish management and the primary livelihood source for the local community. This study identifies fish distribution patterns as a crucial aspect of effectively channeling products from fishermen to markets. We adopted a qualitative method for data analysis, utilizing the approach proposed by Miles and Huberman, which encompasses three main activities: data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Data reduction involves sorting through data to isolate the most relevant and significant information. The data were subsequently displayed in matrices, graphs, and categorical trees to facilitate a more straightforward analysis. Conclusions were drawn once the data were organized to highlight specific themes and patterns. For qualitative data, we used a Likert scale to gauge the attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of individuals or groups. Our findings reveal three primary distribution channels at the port: The first channel includes fishermen, distributors, and seafood processing companies; the second channel comprises fishermen, Kios Ikan Nelayan, and buyers; the third channel consists of fishermen, Kios Ikan Nelayan, and market sellers. Our results not only provide a framework for the sustainable management of the port but also offer an in-depth understanding of the fish distribution dynamics, which fishermen and port managers can utilize to enhance the productivity and sustainability of their fishing enterprises. Thus, this study contributes to the development of best practices in fisheries resource management and the empowerment of fishing communities in Indonesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to promote the economic well-being of fishing villages in Taipa Hamlet, Takalar Regency, this study attempts to ascertain the circumstances, digitization efforts, and the government's significant role in their achievement. With qualitative descriptive data analysis, this study is qualitative in nature. According to research findings, the Taipa Hamlet fishing community is made up of people who are between 20 and 60 years old and is divided into three groups based on capital ownership: skipper fishermen, working fishermen, and owner fishermen. The issue that these groups face is the low selling price of the catch because of the direct marketing process. In Taipa Hamlet, Takalar Regency, there are a number of digitalization initiatives that can be implemented to enhance the economic well-being of the local fishing villages. These initiatives include the introduction of technology, instruction in its use, and testing of the technology that will be put to use. As the custodian of the reins of power, the government may play a significant part in accelerating the digitization of fisherman in Taipa Hamlet, Takalar Regency. Increasing people's access to technology is one of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Apart from working as fishermen, the coastal community in Kapedi Village also catch fish by planting bagan in coastal waters. Bagan is very effective as a fishing tool. The fish caught using this bagan are of good quality and are not physically damage so that they can compete in traditional markets. Besides that, catching fish using a bagan is not too risky for the safety of the fishermen. Almost all of the fishermen from Kapedi Village stopped fishing by boat and switched to planting bagan on the surface of the coastal waters. The purpose of this study was to determine the practice of controlling coastal waters by traditional fishermen who plant bagan fishing gear and to assess the suitability of these traditional fishing activities based on existing regulations. To achieve the objectives of this study, empirical juridical research methods have been used with a fact approach. The results of the study show that the traditional fisherman planting bagan in Kapedi Village is one of the subjects who can take advantage of sea space, therefore they are required to have Sea Space Utilization Activity Conformity (Kesesuaian Pemanfaatan Ruang Laut) issued by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. All bagan planting activities on the surface of coastal waters are required to have a Sea Space Utilization Activity Conformity (KPRL) Form of Sea Space Utilization Activity Suitability for fishermen in Kapedi Village based on Government Regulation Number 21 year 2021 in the form of facilitation by the Regional Government. This research adopted an exploratory mixed methods approach to explore women's participation, its associated determinants, causes, and obstacles to participation in dry fish processing in a selected coastal region of Bangladesh. Data were collected using structured interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with women residing in six coastal villages. Extreme poverty, supporting family expenditure, and bearing children's educational expenses drive women's participation in dry fish processing activities. Multiple regression analysis indicates that intra-family empowerment status, self-confidence, personal income, family land ownership, and family size can significantly explain women's participation in dry fish processing. It was also discovered that women worked long hours in dry fish processing and were underpaid compared to men workers. The major obstacles to participation were physical hazards, low salary payment, seasonality of work, and low social status of the job. This study recommends strategies to improve the status of women's participation in dry fish processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine capture fisheries in Malaysia plays prominent role in economic growth and commercial fisheries makes great contribution to country's economy. The commercial fishing industry in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia are mainly operated by trawlers and purse seines which rises a major concern in managing and achieving the goal of sustainable fishery. This study aimed to account the differences of accounting profit level in commercial fishing industry in Pahang State, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, comparison of accounting profits using revenue and profit approach among trawl and purse seine fishery in two different zones: Zone C (offshore) and Zone C2 (deep sea) was carried out based on the intensive survey on fishing capacity and other economic factors. The survey was carried out with the commercial fishermen and total respondents of 156 fishers at landing port. The result showed that trawlers incurred low cost yet provided higher profit than doses by purse seine. Moreover, there are more trawlers vessels operating in the Pahang state fishing ground and the open access nature of the fishery like larger profit invites more effort to use in the fishery which is leading to the over exploitation of fishery resources and threatening the sustainable condition of the fishery. The findings of the research inform the possible impact of fishing profit to overcapacity in sustainable fishery management in Pahang State fishery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MANGROVE plants , *MANGROVE forests , *SMALL-scale fisheries , *FISHING villages , *ENVIRONMENTAL risk , *CLIMATE change - Abstract
The Sundarbans Mangrove Forest (SMF) is the world's largest tidal halophytic mangrove forest block. This forest and the livelihoods it depends on are extremely susceptible to anticipated climate change. The lives and vulnerabilities of small-scale fisheries are still poorly known despite the Sundarbans being frequently used as a test case by scientists to examine climate variability and change. Based on research on six fishing villages in the Sundarbans, this study analyzed the environmental and livelihood risks of smallscale fisheries and how they responded to climate change-related events. A range of qualitative techniques, such as focus groups, oral histories, and interviews, were used to gather empirical data. The study found that environmental changes have a significant impact on how well-off the Sundarbans community is, having an impact on things, including housing, income, savings, literacy, health, agriculture, and daily living. The most at risk from these negative effects are residents of nearby areas. The study's conclusions, which were based on the perspectives of the fishers, are important for the co-management of mangroves, biodiversity preservation, planning, and the improvement of livelihoods. In recent years, the people's life happiness index has become the key word in the government work report. Paying attention to the "life happiness index" is not only the embodiment of the "people-oriented" scientific development concept, but also the internal requirement of the harmonious development of economy and society.By means of questionnaire interview, 150 affected fishermen from Jingjiang District of Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, Jiangyin County of Wuxi, Wujin District of Changzhou, Yixing District of Wuxi, Wuzhong District of Suzhou and Wujiang District of Suzhou were selected as the research objects to analyze the current situation of life happiness of local affected fishermen and its influencing factors. The Generalized additive model (GAM) and life happiness index scale were built to analyze the factors affecting the happiness of life of affected fishermen. The study found that healthy physical condition, stable living pattern, increasing household expenditure, good living environment and higher education level were the main factors that made fishermen satisfied with their lives. Unhealthy physical condition, unstable life pattern, lack of long-term money planning awareness and reasonable control of consumption expenditure after having a certain amount of savings, and the number of two or more children living independently are the main factors that lead to fishermen's dissatisfaction with life. The government can improve the life happiness index of affected fishermen by relaxing housing conditions, creating new jobs, carrying out spiritual civilization construction, training on the prevention of common diseases, building new public activity facilities and other measures. FISHERY co-management ,SMALL-scale fisheries ,FISHERS ,DISTRIBUTION costs ,CORAL reefs & islands ,CONFLICT management - Abstract
Natural resources are widely managed through collaborative governance arrangements (e.g., co-management) which often result in the uneven distribution of costs and benefits among fishers. Discrepancies in how a fisher is impacted by co-management relative to other fishers or others in the community (i.e., disparity) can negatively affect fishers' wellbeing, their support for management, and subsequently, ecological outcomes. Yet, disparities in the distribution of social impacts from co-management have rarely been assessed. We address this gap by examining disparities (losses and gains) in perceived livelihood impacts from co-management. Losses (or gains) occur when a fisher experiences a more negative (or positive) impact on their livelihood relative to other fishers or others in the community. We used data from interviews with 1191 fishers associated with 48 coral reef co-management arrangements across Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea to examine how socioeconomic and institutional characteristics were associated with losses and gains from co-management. Overall, we found that more fishers perceived equality than disparities in the distribution of co-management impacts. Of those that perceived disparities, more fishers perceived losses than gains. We also found that disparities could be predicted by a range of socioeconomic characteristics, including distance to markets and wealth, and institutional characteristics of the co-management regime, such as gear, access, and area restrictions. This study provides insights on potential entry points that could be used by managers and policy-makers to promote equitable co-management of small-scale fisheries, such as the reduction of losses by increasing participation in decision-making processes, fostering conflict resolution mechanisms, prioritizing gear restrictions over area restrictions, and reducing poverty. Extreme weather events (EWEs) pose significant threats to fishery-based livelihoods in Quang Ngai (QN) Province, Vietnam. This study describes the types of livelihood adaptations (LAs) that coastal fishers in QN have practiced in response to EWEs and find the varieties in these adaptation strategy choices. In this study, we investigated livelihood adaptation strategies in coastal areas through a household survey and analysis of the collected data using MS Excel. Two sample strategies were used, stratified and random sampling, to select 229 coastal fishers from 11 communes; and data are collected through designed questionnaires. The current study employed statistical disaggregation and comparative methods to analyze coastal fishers' adaptation strategy choices in QN Province. A range of adaptation strategies were identified consisting of five reactive LAs and eight anticipatory LAs practiced differently by coastal fishers. Among the eight anticipatory LAs, discontinuing production for a certain time is a novel adaptation in QN Province. In addition, a divergence in conducting LAs by production forms was found. On-sand farming and offshore fishers invest in advanced technologies and facilities as adaptive measures. By contrast, fishers who farm in estuaries, lagoons, and nearshore fishing fishers are more likely to change and diversify their jobs. The study's key findings about livelihood adaptation measures and their differences are significant for improving coastal fisher's livelihoods in Vietnam. Any efforts at local and national levels in developing mitigation strategies for the impact of EWEs may consider the coastal fisher's adaptation choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study examined the length-weight relationships (LWRs), length-length relationships (LLRs), and condition factor (K) of four threatened riverine catfish species (Pangasius pangasius, Rita rita, Sperata aor, and Bagarius bagarius) sampled from the Meghna River Estuary (MRE), Bangladesh. A total of 578 individuals were collected from contracted fishermen between January and October 2022. The length and weight of each species exhibited a highly positive correlation. The regression coefficient was 2.24 for P. pangasius, 2.90 for R. rita, 2.91 for S. aor, and 3.25 for B. bagarius. Furthermore, all species demonstrated a highly positive correlation between total length and standard length (r > 0.90). The calculated condition factor (K) values were 0.87 for P. pangasius, 1.18 for R. rita, 0.66 for S. aor, and 0.99 for B. bagarius indicating variations among the species. This study provides the first comprehensive documentation of all four major catfish species found in the MRE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater turtles are among the least studied faunas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Here, we report the presence of freshwater turtles (Cuora amboinensis) from Car Nicobar, a small remote island in the Nicobar archipelago comprising the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the people belonging to Nicobarese tribes (n = 233) to gather their local ecological knowledge as supportive information to obtain a better understanding of the status of turtles in Car Nicobar. Most interviewees (90%) opined that freshwater turtles are found to be rare or very rare on the Island. All the respondents (100%) expressed willingness to contribute to future conservation projects. Community-level awareness emerged as a prominent issue for future conservation using the Garrett ranking method. A stream network map was prepared using the digital elevation model to visualize streams and potential habitats of turtles. This report on the freshwater turtles is essential from an ecological perspective since information is scarce on the freshwater turtles in Car Nicobar. This study emphasizes the importance of the engagement of stakeholders in conservation projects and recommends providing adequate attention to the conservation and protection of freshwater turtle diversity in Car Nicobar. The goal of this article is to analyze the strategic market actions of artisanal fishers from Maitencillo cove (Chile), under the framework of institutional, technological, and economic transformations in the fisheries field, in which governance units aim at the sustainability of marine capture resources. An ethnographic research was carried out between 2016 and 2021. In a first phase (2016-2017), semi-structured interviews were conducted; in a second period (2017-2021), participant observation was applied; finally, a collection and review of photographs were carried out. The results show that the co-management of certain resources, represented by a type of territorial use right in this cove, is in an effective and alternative way of managing them. Moreover, a transformation on the valuation of Maitencillo products were identified. Here, the value of the products is guaranteed by the story and by the "staging" in the purchase and sale. It is concluded that the strategic market actions of these fishers are aligned with what Boltanski y Esquerre (2015) call the "economy of enrichment", in which heritage, tourism and the exceptionality of resources stand out. Small-scale fisheries in Ghana are declining in response to the global fisheries crisis. The policies to curb this situation are dependent on the wellbeing of fishers in terms of material condition, quality of life, and transformative strategies for sustainable livelihoods. This paper employs survey data to investigate the wellbeing of fishers, using descriptives, principal-component analysis, and structural equation modelling. The results revealed that the summative effect of material condition, quality of life, and sustainability on fishers' wellbeing is low. Despite the low ranking of income (lower among men fishers than women fish processors), basic necessities, and government support, fishers are still motivated to work but claim that their children may one day be locked out of the industry. This paper addresses the gap in the literature by establishing the need to enhance educational facilities for the children of fishers, while complementing with investments that create job opportunities in the fishing communities. This may eventually reduce dependence on the sea for sustainable fisheries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate-change-driven storminess and extreme events are increasingly challenging fishers in tropical island countries. Weather-based index insurance is an emerging tool that can assist fishing communities in their recovery and adaptation to such events. In these regions, coral reefs support valuable fisheries and also provide coastal protection during extreme events. Surveying 80 fishers in Grenada, this exploratory study examined fishers' perceptions of index insurance in the context of their experiences of extreme events. We also explore perceptions of reef health and its' connections to fishing outcomes and coastal protection, given the indirect role this plays in supporting fishers' resilience through associated fisheries and storm protection. Most fishers viewed extreme events as a severe risk to their livelihoods, affecting their ability to make future plans. Fishers comprehended the links between improved reef health and positive impacts on fishing (higher catches and incomes). Several challenges regarding index insurance were raised, which centred on themes of flexibility, affordability, inclusivity, and accessibility. These could pose barriers to fishers and undermine demand for or participation in such schemes. As such, research, design, and implementation of future index insurance schemes should consider issues raised by fishers to ensure that provision is equitable and improve uptake. Marine Research and Observation Center (BROL) has developed information technology for Fishing Ground Forecasting Maps (PPDPI) to assist fishers in determining accurate fishing grounds. The use of PPDPI by longline fishers in Cilacap Fishing Port has yet to be effective due to the lack of information obtained by fishers and problems with map accuracy. This study aims to identify fishers’ perceptions of the use of PPDPI and recommend alternative strategies to increase the use of PPDPI by fishers at Cilacap Fishing Port. The research was conducted at Cilacap Fishing Port using a survey method with longline skipper respondents. Descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis and the SWOT method used to analyze. The study’s results show that fishers’ perceptions of the use of PPDPI in terms of ecological, technological, socio-economic, and institutional aspects have yet to provide real benefits to fishers. Judging from the number of fish caught and the fishers’ knowledge of the condition of the fishing ground, which is dominated by perceptions that have not changed, difficulties in accessing PPDPI and the accuracy of the fishing points at PPDPI are still doubtful, as well as the lack of government contribution and participation in supporting the development of PPDPI utilization in Cilacap Fishing Port. The strategy recommended for developing PPDPI is that the government must validate PPDPI by field-checking longline fishers and provide tools to automatically distribute PPDPI information to fishers as PPDPI users. This article is part of the thesis, already completed, that discusses the inclusion of artisanal fishermen beneficiaries of the Unemployment Insurance Program for Artisanal Fishers (Programa Seguro Defeso Pescador/a Artesanal) (SDPA) in Youth and Adult Education (EJA). The object of investigation focuses on studies about this topic, seeking to verify the relationships between the schooling of these subjects and the Program. The research´s part focused on this study was the literature review related to works that explore productions that emphasize the relationship between the schooling of artisanal fishermen and SDPA. Its theoretical framework is studied on work and education, considering the subjects, their lives in fishing, and the cultural practices of the communities. Preliminary results indicate "gaps" in the studies related to the schooling of EJA students who live from fishing and who are SDPA beneficiaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed an R package for the Inland Fisheries Division of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to help team members share R functions and data sets. The {NCIFD} package stores several functions that were developed for agency research, including cleanBIODE(), which cleans query results from a database of standardized fish samples and imports the data into an R session. In addition, {NCIFD} stores a variety of data sets including observations from ongoing research projects, hatchery records, and administrative information. Stored in a package, data sets are instantly available for exploration and analysis in an R session, can share a common naming convention, and retain their metadata. Although developing an R package requires effort, we believe it is a useful tool that other fisheries agencies should encourage interested staff to explore. We share advice to help others get started while avoiding some missteps we encountered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The process of catching fishing gear that goes out of control is called ghost fishing .Abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gears (ALDFG) can cause adverse economic and environmental effects. Passive fishing gears, such as cages, produce more severe effects after being released into the water. Gargoors are one of the types of cages, which every year a large number of them are left in the sea in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, for various reasons. In recent years, a new generation of gargoors with a rebar body covered with net are used in the waters of Bushehr. This study was conducted with the aim of choosing the best Gargoor model in terms of ALDFG and ghost fishing from November to July 1400 in Bushehr waters. The required data were collected during 310 voyages in 30 coordinates and by 9 vessels equipped with 90 gargoors with a body made of rebar in the depth range of 20 to 50 meters. All gargoors were baited with mixed baits of chirocentrus dorab and Arius thalassinus. The gargoors were monitored every 15 days during an eight-month fishing period without moving. Also, data comparing the efficiency of different gargoor models were collected by distributing questionnaires among those who had used wire and bar gargoor at least twice. The species composition of the catch included 24 species belonging to 12 families, of which common grouper (Epinephelus coioides) and sparus spinifer (Sparus spinifer) had the highest and lowest percentage of catches with 31% and 22%, respectively. The results showed that all the barred gargoor, if they are not lost, return to the land after the end of fishing. According to the answers of the fishermen, the main reasons for the loss of rebar fishing nets were theft (45%), trawl net (28%), bottom fishing net (19%) and weather conditions (9%) respectively, and in terms of life, strength, economy And the lower amount of ALDFG, rebar screws are preferred over wire screws in use. Due to the low rate of abandonment and loss of rebar gargoor, as a factor of superiority over wire gargoors, it is recommended that researchers, by combining their knowledge with the experiences of fishermen, design gargoors with fewer disadvantages while maintaining the merits of different gargoor models, especially from the economic and biological point of view. Take environmental action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groupers are apex predators that are believed to play crucial roles in ecosystems, so any loss or decline of these species in coral reefs can adversely affect ecosystem stability. Epinephelus fuscoguttatus is currently categorized as vulnerable (VU) from its previous near threatened (NT) category. Information about their biological and ecological status is limited to assist in formulating management plans for the species in Kenya. Therefore, we aimed to provide baseline scientific information on the biology of E. fuscoguttatus, to enable formulation of sustainable management strategies. Sampling was conducted for 1 year at two fish landing sites along the Kenyan coast: Shimoni and Mayungu. Exploitation rate, size at maturity (L50), GSI, and fecundity were estimated. We found that E. fuscoguttatus was currently exploited above an optimum level, (E = 0.9). Length at maturity L50 was 59.50 cm for males and 48.2 cm for females, and mean fecundity was 509,121 eggs/female/year. The gonadosomatic index was highest in June and December, but ripe females were identified in several months to suggest a protracted spawning period. The exploitation rate of E. fuscoguttatus was not sustainable. Consequently, we recommend reducing fishing effort to biologically sustainable levels to enhance recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The snow crab Chionoecetes opilio resource in Assessment Division 2HJ has experienced prolonged high exploitation rates and reduced exploitable biomass over the past two decades. We aimed to explore whether this poor state of the resource is associated with spatial management changes made in 2003 and 2013. Methods: We tested for differences in fishery performance trends before and after the implementation of spatial management which include standardized CPUE, spatial extent of fishing effort, and size at maturity of male snow crabs. Result: The results show that spatial regulatory changes were successful in increasing fishery catch rates in the short term but that chronic high exploitation eventually overrode these gains, with contracted fishing patterns leading to increased localized depletion rates on dominant stock components. This ultimately culminated in a downward shift in size at maturity and other concerning biological outcomes. Conclusion: The analysis demonstrates spatial management measures contributed to the present poor state of Assessment Division 2HJ snow crab and that such measures should serve as complements to—not replacements for—stringent quota control. Impact statementWe analyzed the outcome of two spatial management interventions in Labrador snow crab Assessment Division 2HJ. We demonstrated that a focus on spatial management measures rather than stringent quota control has contributed to the present poor state of snow crab in Assessment Division 2HJ over the past two decades. Fisheries studies concerning the related impacts of fishing on the aquatic environment have mostly dealt with industrial fisheries. Concerted large‐scale exploitation can lead to stock declines and potentially species extinction. Hydrocynus vittatus is a piscivore and popular recreational fish species that can grow up to 70 cm fork length and weigh up to 15 kg. Hydrocynus vittatus is also a fish of importance in Lake Kariba as local communities along lake shorelines depend on it for both income and food. There is an insufficient understanding of the impacts of artisanal fishing on tigerfish, H. vittatus population parameters and reproductive biology in Lake Kariba. Hence, this study investigated life history traits and population dynamics of H. vittatus in the Ume Basin of Lake Kariba, north‐eastern Zimbabwe. Scales were used to estimate the age of tigerfish and the Bertalanffy growth curve used to estimate the growth parameters. A gonadal reproductive stage determination index was used to determine sexual maturity and the logistic growth curve was used to estimate size at 50% sexual maturity (L50). Using the gonadal maturation index, the L50 for males was estimated ranging between 120 and 149 mm. On the other hand, L50 reached between 250 and 299 mm in females. Females had a higher average mean length (335 mm), compared to that of males (289 mm). The length‐at‐age data from scales had relatively few outliers and moderate scatter. Parameters for the von Bertalanffy growth curve were (L‐infinity = 641.5, k = 0.517, t0 = 3.07). This study highlighted the negative impacts (male‐biased sex ratio and small size at maturity) that artisanal gillnet fishing has on the population structure and reproductive potential of tigerfish in the Ume Basin of Lake Kariba. These impacts are a direct result of both legal and illegal fishing activities of the fishers operating in the Ume Basin and based at Musamba Fishing Camp. There is, therefore, an urgent need for the regulatory authority, the Matusadona Conservation Trust, to engage the fishers in developing long‐term strategies to reverse the observed unhealthy population status and allow the tigerfish stock to replenish itself. Fisheries tourism is a relatively new style of tourism in many countries, which has brought many benefits to both sectors by merging the tourism and fishing sectors. To create and develop fisheries tourism, the participation of the local community, including the fishermen community, as one of the most important groups related to fisheries tourism, is considered an effective tool and an important element. Among the most important prerequisites for the participation of communities in the development of fisheries tourism is the intention of these communities to participate. Therefore, this research was conducted with the general purpose of investigating the intention of fishermen to participate in fisheries tourism and the factors affecting it. This research is practical in terms of purpose, is descriptivr - correlational in terms of analysis, and has been carried out through survey relying on the theory of planned behavior. The statistical population in this research was fishermen who are members of beach seine cooperatives in the Caspian Sea Coastline(N=9594). Due to the distribution of fishermen in the three provinces of Golestan, Mazandaran and Gilan, the sample size of the study was determined to be 209 fishermen and the samples were selected using the multi-stage random sampling method. Data collection was done using a researchermade questionnaire, which was designed based on the theoretical framework of the research and based on the The Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB). The results showed that fishermen who are members of beach seine cooperatives in the Caspian Sea Coastline have a high intention to accept and participate in the implementation of fisheries tourism. The results also showed that participation in the program "watching the local fish markets by fisheries tourists" has the highest level of intention among all fisheries tourism activities among the fishermen of beach seine cooperatives. They also expressed their intention to participate in programs for "watching beach seine fishing and throwing nets". "staying in the house of local people and being familiar with local fishing communities (cultures and customs)" and cooperation to "participation in local festivals related to fisheries" were other activities that fishermen were interested in participating them.
