Spontaneous Raman spectroscopy is a powerful characterization tool for graphene research. Its extension to the coherent regime, despite the large nonlinear third-order susceptibility of graphene, has so far proven challenging. Due to its gapless nature, several interfering electronic and phononic transitions concur to generate its optical response, preventing to retrieve spectral profiles analogous to those of spontaneous Raman. Here we report stimulated Raman spectroscopy of the G-phonon in single and multi-layer graphene, through coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering. The nonlinear signal is dominated by a vibrationally non-resonant background, obscuring the Raman lineshape. We demonstrate that the vibrationally resonant coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering peak can be measured by reducing the temporal overlap of the laser excitation pulses, suppressing the vibrationally non-resonant background. We model the spectra, taking into account the electronically resonant nature of both. We show how coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering can be used for graphene imaging with vibrational sensitivity., Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) accesses the vibrational properties of a material via nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM); CARS in graphene has not been observed to date despite its high nonlinear third-order susceptibility. Here, the authors devised a FWM scheme to perform stimulated Raman spectroscopy in single and multi-layer graphene through CARS.

For decades, researchers have highlighted significant differences in gender and age groups in terms of driving behaviour. There are several studies, concerning gender, about the different perceptions of risk, traffic accident involvement and risky driving. The present research is a part of a research project about risk perception between genders that aims to estimate and quantify gender differences in terms of driving behaviour. In particular, this paper aims to focus on differences between male and female drivers in performing stopping maneuver in an urban environment. As confirmed by several medical studies, the gender difference involves cognitive and psychophysiological differences, which have a significant impact on the risk perception assessment. In the past, several researches have investigated gender differences on driving behaviour through questionnaire, statistical analysis and psychological driving task, but today technological advances have allowed the development of new tools to study the drivers’ behaviour. In fact, many studies in the field of road safety were recently conducted with the virtual reality driving simulator. In this instance, the analysis is carried out through the virtual reality driving simulator, situated in the LASS3 Virtual Reality Laboratory of University Research Centre for Road Safety, by implementing a simulated scenario of an urban condition with many sudden events (e.g. intersection, pedestrian crossing, merging vehicle into the traffic, etc.) that can lead to a stopping maneuver. The LASS3 virtual reality driving simulator collects all the kinematic and dynamic driving measures (e.g. speed, acceleration, position respect to the lane, pedal pressure, etc.) with a frequency of 0.1Âs. A sample of 40 drivers were subjected to the driving test and the results of three indicators of risk perception are studied in order to confirm the results of the previous analysis. The selected indicators for the analysis are: time to collision (TTC), pressure on brake pedal (PB) and slip ratio (SR). As results show, male and female drivers have a different behaviour in performing stopping maneuver. Even if they have the same perception of the potential risk of the road environment (TTC values), they perform in a very different way the stopping maneuver: men more carefully than women (PB, SR).

Objective To evaluate which early neurocognitive and behavioral precursors are associated with the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and whether these are currently targeted in early interventions. Method We conducted 2 systematic reviews and meta-analyses of empirical studies to examine the following: (1) early-life (0−5 years) neurocognitive and behavioral precursors associated with familial likelihood for ADHD, an early ADHD diagnosis/elevated ADHD symptoms, and/or the presence of later-childhood ADHD; and (2) interventions delivered to children aged 0 to 5 years targeting the identified precursors or measuring these as outcomes. Standardized mean differences (Hedges’ g) and pre-post-treatment change scores (SMD) were computed. Results A total of 149 studies (165,095 participants) investigating 8 neurocognitive and behavioral domains met inclusion criteria for part 1. Multi-level random-effects meta-analyses on 136 studies revealed significant associations between ADHD and poorer cognitive (g = −0.46 [95% CIs: −0.59, −0.33]), motor (g = −0.35 [CIs: −0.48, −0.21]) and language (g = −0.43 [CIs: −0.66, −0.19]) development, social (g = 0.23 [CIs: 0.03, 0.43]) and emotional (g = 0.46 [CIs: 0.33, 0.58]) difficulties, early regulatory (g = 0.30 [CIs: 0.18, 0.43]) and sleep (g = 0.29 [CIs: 0.14, 0.44]) problems, sensory atypicalities (g = 0.52 [CIs: 0.16, 0.88]), elevated activity levels (g = 0.54 [CIs: 0.37, 0.72]), and executive function difficulties (g = 0.34 [CIs: 0.05, 0.64] to −0.87 [CIs: −1.35, −0.40]). A total of 32 trials (28 randomized, 4 nonrandomized, 3,848 participants) testing early interventions that targeted the identified precursors met inclusion criteria for part 2. Multi-level random-effects meta-analyses on 22 studies revealed significant intervention-related improvements in ADHD symptoms (SMD = 0.43 [CIs: 0.22, 0.64]) and working memory (SMD = 0.37 [CIs: 0.06, 0.69]). Conclusion Children aged 0 to 5 years with current or later-emerging ADHD are likely to experience difficulties in multiple neurocognitive/behavioral functions. Early interventions show some effectiveness in reducing ADHD symptoms, but their effects on neurocognitive/behavioral difficulties require further study.

The two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of two extended symmetric squaraine dyes are thoroughly characterized from the experimental and quantum-chemical point of view. The two molecules are specially engineered to have a multipolar structure with increasing complexity, D-π-A-π-D and A′-π-D-π-A-π-D-π-A′, respectively. The experimental TPA spectra, measured by means of the Z-scan technique in the femtoseconds regime, display considerably high values of TPA cross sections (σTPA) for both molecules. In particular, the squaraine with the more extended structure shows the highest value of σTPA ever reported for this class of molecules. CIS and TDDFT calculations of the one and two-photon absorption properties are carried out to clarify the origin of the observed TPA properties and fully characterize the electronic properties of these compounds. The calculations, in good agreement with the experimental data, suggest that the origin of this exceptionally high σTPA can be ascribed to the presence of a peripheral A′ group, that increases the density of excited states involved in the TPA process. © the Owner Societies 2011.

Pleurotus species isolated in vitro were studied to determine the effect of different media on their production of secondary metabolites, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activity. The different metabolites among Pleurotus samples covered a total of 58 pathways. Comparisons were made between the metabolic profiles of Pleurotus spp. mycelia grown in two substrates: Potato-dextrose-agar-PDA, used as control (S1), and PDA enriched with 0.5 % of wheat straw (S2). The main finding was that the metabolic pathways are strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the growth substrate. The antibacterial effects were particularly evident against Escherichia coli, whereas Arthroderma curreyi (CCF 5207) and Trichophyton rubrum (CCF 4933) were the dermatophytes more sensitive to the mushroom extracts. The present study supports more in-depth investigations, aimed at evaluating the influence of growth substrate on Pleurotus spp. antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness data of a virtual adaptation of the WHO Caregiver Skills Training (CST; n = 25) were compared with those of a pilot RCT of CST delivered in person (n = 43) against treatment as usual (TAU; n = 43). Virtual CST was delivered with high levels of integrity, but received lower ratings in some caregiver- and facilitator-rated acceptability and feasibility dimensions. Qualitative analysis identified both benefits (flexibility, convenience, clinical usefulness) and challenges, (technological issues, distraction from family members, emotional distance). Virtual and in-person CST improved significantly more on caregiver competence than TAU; there were no other significant effects. Potential for use of virtual CST as a clinical response in contexts where in-person delivery is not possible is discussed.

This paper reports on the results of field surveys conducted at the approaching section of two bicycle crossroads in urban environment. The crossing roads are characterised by different cross-sections (one-lane and two-lane configurations) having a same marking scheme. The aim of the surveys was to evaluate the effectiveness of the specific marking scheme for the two different cross-sections and to provide relevant insight to improve the cyclist safety, based on the observed drivers’ behaviours. More specifically, the data analysis was aimed at: (i) studying the yielding behaviour of the drivers on the two bicycle configurations and evaluating the effects of the observed vehicle dynamics constraints in approaching phases; (ii) analysing drivers’ braking during the interaction with cyclist; (iii) defining a logistic regression model for predicting the drivers’ likelihood of yielding as a function of the variables describing his behaviour and the cross-section configurations. Results have stressed out a more critical driver yielding behaviour and braking performance when approaching the bicycle crossroad on the two-lane configuration. The logistic regression model have pointed out the cross-section variable to have the strongest effect on the logit of drivers yielding, determining a significant reduction of the likelihood of yielding if the interaction driver-cyclist occurs in the two-lane configuration. Overall, the obtained outcomes highlight a higher risk exposure of the cyclist crossing the two-lane configuration. The obtained outcomes imply that the same marking scheme on the two different cross-section configurations is inappropriate. It fails to induce proper driver behaviour when he/she approaches the bicycle crossing on the two-lane configuration in order to limit the cyclist's risk exposure to the values observed on the one-lane configuration. Eventually, several measures and recommendations have been defined to reduce the risk conditions identified in two-lane configuration.

Background: Although language difficulties are one of the most distinctive characteristics of the neuropsychological profile of children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCT), the analysis of the maternal input addressed to them is a neglected topic. Aims: The present study aims to analyse the lexical, morphosyntactic, and functional features of the input addressed to children with SCT comparing them with those of the input directed to typically developing children (TD). Methods & Procedures: Participants were 38 mothers and their 8-month-old children, 19 with SCT and 19 TD children. Maternal utterances, collected during video-recorded play sessions, have been transcribed and coded. Outcomes & Results: No significant differences between groups have been found in the lexical and syntactic characteristics of maternal input. However, considering the input functional features, the proportion of directives and questions was significantly higher in the maternal input addressed to children with SCT than in the input addressed to TD children whereas the opposite pattern was found in the proportion of affect-salient speech. Conclusions & Implications: The awareness of a possible delay in their children's language development could influence the way the mothers speak to them. In particular, the functional features of maternal input could be affected. Support groups for parents of children with SCT at the preverbal stage could be useful to reassure the mothers about their role in their children's language development. What this paper adds What is already known on the subject Studies in the literature identified a high percentage of language delays or impairments in children with SCT. To date, according to our knowledge, there are no studies that analyse the linguistic input addressed to these children. What this study adds The lexical and syntactic features of maternal input addressed to 8-month-old children with SCT are adequate to the children's communicative skills. However, the mothers of children with SCT seem to provide additional scaffolding in their verbal input, using a lower proportion of affect-salient speech and a higher proportion of questions. In addition, a higher proportion of directives suggests the use of a more demanding style. Clinical implications of this study The awareness of possible language delays could influence the functional features of input leading mothers to use a more supportive and demanding input. Support groups for parents of children with SCT at the preverbal stage could be useful to reassure the mothers about their role in their children's language development.

166. Driving Simulator Study for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Virtual Warnings to Improve the Safety of Interaction between Cyclists and Vehicles

Globally, cyclists account for 3% of all road traffic deaths, with the highest percentage occurring in Europe (8%) where the bicycle is considered a true alternative mode of transport. Among the causes of crashes are vehicles overtaking cyclists, especially on rural roads. In this study, a new application of augmented reality (AR) warnings for connected vehicles is tested by means of a driving simulator. The overall objective of the study consists in assessing the effectiveness of three proposed AR systems in improving the safety of interactions between vehicles and cyclists, especially during overtaking maneuvers. The AR systems were tested on a sample of 46 drivers and provided them with additional virtual visual information aimed at improving the driver’s risk perception and assessment of safe distance from a cyclist. The virtual warning configurations were: (i) a yellow safety zone around the cyclist; (ii) a color-changing safety zone that changes from red to green when the driver has safe lateral space to overtake the cyclist; (iii) the same color-changing security zone but with an additional acoustic warning. The AR warnings were found to be quite effective as they helped drivers overtake cyclists more safely. With AR warnings (especially with the additional audio), it was found that drivers adopted longer distances from cyclists and entered the oncoming lane less frequently, thus lowering the risk of collision with cyclists as well as the risk of head-on collision with oncoming vehicles.

167. Influence of Intersection Density on Risk Perception of Drivers in Rural Roadways: A Driving Simulator Study

With the aim of maintaining a decent level of accessibility, the presence of intersections, often in high numbers, is one of the typical features of rural roads. However, evidence from literature shows that increasing intersection density increases the risk of accidents. Accident analysis literature regarding intersection density primarily consists of accident prediction models which are a useful tool for measuring safety performance of roads, but the literature is lacking in terms of evaluation of driver behavior using direct measurements of driver performance. This study focuses on the influence of intersection density on the risk perception of drivers through experiments carried out with a driving simulator. A virtual driving environment of a rural roadway was constructed. The road consisted of segments featuring extra-urban and village driving environments with varying intersection density level. Participants were recruited to drive through this virtual driving environment. Various driver performance measures such as vehicle speed and brake and gas pedal usage were collected from the experiment and then processed for further analysis. Results indicate an increase in driver’s perceived risk when the intersection density increased, according with the findings from the accident prediction modeling literature. However, at the same time, this driving simulator study revealed some interesting insights about oscillating perceived risk among drivers in the case of mid-level intersection separation distances. Beyond the accident research domain, findings from this study can also be useful for engineers and transportation agencies associated with access management to make more informed decisions.

In recent years, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology has emerged as a pivotal approach for the design and management optimization of infrastructures. The need for fully integrated models has led to develop various tools to support the designers throughout the decision-making process of the entire life cycle of an infrastructure project. In particular, the design of transport infrastructures is a complex process that involves issues concerning all the different fields of civil engineering. In this framework, the BIM method can be efficiently applied to support the project of drainage systems capable of protecting railways and roadways from potential hydraulic risks. According to the above, this study presents an optimized BIM-based methodology for the integrated analysis of the flood risk and the design of the drainage system components. Specifically, the proposed method allows to implement hydraulics and hydrological numerical models as part of the different design phases. Such an approach holds two main advantages for the designer. On one hand, the computational modelling provides a decisive support in both defining water surface profiles over the designed area and identifying the spots exposed to major hydrological risks. On the other hand, the hydraulically guided modelling of each component of the drainage system allows for an increase of the overall productivity and efficiency of the project. A case study is presented to highlight the great potential of the proposed approach in ensuring both the integrity of datasets and the rapid clash detection of critical interferences between each system component. In conclusion, new perspectives about a fully integrated hydraulics analysis in the infrastructures design process are stressed out.

This paper provides an overview of the existing literature on the subject of ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods for the investigation of reinforced concrete structures. An overview of the use of concrete and reinforced concrete in civil engineering infrastructures is given. A review of the main destructive and non-destructive testing methods in the field is presented, and an increase in the use of GPR to reinforced concrete structures is highlighted. It was also observed that research in some application areas has been predominantly or exclusively carried out at a laboratory scale, and that similarly, other more application-oriented research has been developed only on real-life structures. The effectiveness of GPR in these areas is demonstrated. Furthermore, a case study is presented on a new methodological and data processing approach for the assessment of reinforced concrete structures using a high-frequency dual-polarised antenna system. Results have proven the advantages of using the proposed methodology and GPR system in order to improve the detectability of rebars, including secondary bottom lines of reinforcement. The horizontal polarisation was proven to be more stable compared to the vertical. Finally, it has been demonstrated that a more accurate location of the rebars in a high-density grid mesh arrangement can be obtained by means of data migration processing with a scan spacing of 5cm and wave velocity information through the use of the hyperbola fitting method from at least 30% of the targets.

Devil's Claw is a traditional medicine that has been long used a wide range of health conditions, including indigestion, fever, allergic reactions, and rheumatism. The main compounds are iridoid glycosides, including harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide. However, harpagoside is the most responsible for therapeutic activity, and its content is used as reference standard. Here, we analyzed and summarized preclinical and clinical studies focusing on therapeutic efficacy of devil's claw preparations in pathological conditions in which inflammation plays a key causative role.Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is an herbaceous plant, which can be found in the arid steppes of South Africa, particularly in the Kalahari Desert. As traditional medicine, devil's claw has been long used in the forms of infusions, decoctions, tinctures, powders, and extracts. The main compounds of devil's claw are iridoid glycosides, such as harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide, which are present in the plant tubers. Additionally, chemical constituents such as sugars (mainly the tetrasaccharide stachyose), triterpenoids (oleanolic and ursolic acid), phytosterols (primarily β-sitosterol), aromatic acids (caffeic, cinnamic, and chlorogenic acids), and flavonoids (luteolin and kaempferol) can be found in the plant. In order to investigate the applicative potential of devil's claw as therapeutic agent, we performed a review by focusing on its potential role in managing inflammation- and oxidative stress-related diseases, including arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel disease, low-back pain, diabetes, and neurodegeneration.

[Image: see text] The development of PPARα/γ dual or PPARα/γ/δ pan-agonists could represent an efficacious approach for a simultaneous pharmacological intervention on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Two series of new phenyldiazenyl fibrate derivatives of GL479, a previously reported PPARα/γ dual agonist, were synthesized and tested. Compound 12a was identified as a PPAR pan-agonist with moderate and balanced activity on the three PPAR isoforms (α, γ, δ). Moreover, docking experiments showed that 12a adopts a different binding mode in PPARγ compared to PPARα or PPARδ, providing a structural basis for further structure-guided design of PPAR pan-agonists. The beneficial effects of 12a were evaluated both in vitro, on the expression of PPAR target key metabolic genes, and ex vivo in two rat tissue inflammatory models. The obtained results allow considering this compound as an interesting lead for the development of a new class of PPAR pan-agonists endowed with an activation profile exploitable for therapy of metabolic syndrome.

Inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathies are heterogeneous disorders characterized by immune-mediated leukocyte infiltration of peripheral nerves and nerve roots leading to demyelination or axonal degeneration or both. Inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathies can be divided into acute and chronic: Guillain–Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and their variants. Despite major advances in immunology and molecular biology have been made in the last years, the pathogenesis of these disorders is not completely understood. This review summarizes the current literature of the clinical features and pathogenic mechanisms of inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathies and focuses on current therapies and new potential treatment for the future.

In this paper, the potential of using Augmented Reality (AR) technology to improve the safety of pedestrian crossings was tested, by means of virtual information provided to a driver approaching a zebra crossing area. To achieve this objective, a driving simulator study was carried out. The effectiveness of the system was tested, and the results of the developed simulation tests, with and without AR warning to inform the driver of a pedestrian crossing ahead, were compared. Specifically, AR warnings were tested under two different situations: a visible pedestrian crossing the roadway and a non-visible pedestrian, made invisible by certain obstacles, and who is about to cross the roadway. Two different virtual warnings were tested - in both cases - on a sample of forty-six participants: a flashing red arrow above the pedestrian, and the same visual warning but with an additional audible warning system. The effects of the audible warnings were studied by comparing the driving performances (decelerations, speeds and distances) and surrogate safety measures (Time-to-Collision (TTC) and Time-to-Zebra (TTZ)) with those recorded under reference conditions (without the audible warnings). Positive effects of AR were observed. Specifically, when the AR warnings were activated, drivers started to decelerate well before the pedestrian crossing, with a low deceleration rate and high TTC and TTZ. This study confirmed the great benefits that AR and connected vehicle technologies could bring to the overall safety conditions on the road network, especially under risky situations and difficult maneuvers. The driving simulator is certainly an effective solution for studying and evaluating such technologies, as well as studying their impact on driving performance.

The issue of driving under the effect of alcohol is a matter of several studies in the field of road safety because today alcohol is widely diffused especially among very young people (age ranging between 18 and 25). Each year data provided by authorities are worrying, more than a third of the accidents registered in European countries are caused by alcohol. Italy is aligned with this trend; the ISS – National Institute of Health estimates that alcohol-related road accidents are equal to 30–35% of the total road accidents. Medical researches confirm that alcohol generates negative effects on driving, impairs the ability of perception, attention, processing and evaluation and it has negative effects on cognitive and motor skills. Therefore, the present research is developed in the field of a wider project research with the purpose to investigate and estimate the impact of alcohol on road safety to support awareness campaigns “Drink or Drive”. As demonstrated by findings of the previous study, alcohol has a significant impact on driving performances in terms of geometric, kinematic and dynamic measures. Trajectory, stopping and overtaking maneuvers were studied and a significant delay in reflexes, especially in stopping and overtaking maneuvers, that exposes drivers to high risk level, was calculated. In this research, the focus is on the drivers’ eye-movements that are recorded in the virtual reality driving experiment. To understand how much alcohol impairs attention and concentration in relation to the driving performances, these data are processed and two eye blinking measures (i.e. % blinking and blink rate) are analyzed A sample of 20 drivers were requested to drive the virtual reality-driving simulator situated in the LASS3 Virtual Reality Laboratory of University Research Centre for Road Safety. The route runs in extra-urban and urban areas, in order to study drivers’ behavior in different cases and subjecting drivers to different stimuli (i.e. pedestrian crossing, overtaking maneuver, sudden braking, etc.). The results are a comparison between the results of two conditions drunken and sober. Results show that alcohol affects attention and concentration increasing the absolute value of blinking and its rate. During the stopping and the overtaking maneuvers where driving measures show higher risk levels in drunkenness condition respect the to the sober one, eye measures show a reduction in blinking and frequency (in both conditions) on behalf of a more attention to the road.

In the past decade, converging evidence has suggested that motor impairment is one of the most consistent markers, alongside sociocommunicative difficulties, for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Indeed, widespread anomalies of movement have been described in the ASD context. These motor abnormalities could have critical implications for subsequent cognitive and social development. Nevertheless, this area of development is particularly underexamined in the autism-related context, and early intervention programs commonly focus on the core symptoms of the condition. In the present work, we review and discuss the findings from recent studies that investigated the effect of interventions regarding fundamental motor skills in autistic children. Although the limited nature of the literature prevents researchers from drawing definitive conclusions, the results from the studies discussed here demonstrated potentially significant improvements in the motor abilities of autistic children after the interventions. Only a subset of the reviewed studies explored possible changes in the sociocommunicative domain after the motor skills improvements, and they had not concordant, although promising, conclusions. Overall, in consideration of the well-documented motor impairment people with the condition, the present findings highlight the importance of including motor skills training within the rehabilitation programs designed for autistic children. Furthermore, this narrative review encourages future interventional trials to consider motor skills as a possible target for reducing activity limitations and participation restrictions of autistic children.

Three different road environments (urban, suburban and rural) were implemented in a fixed – base driving simulator. Forty – five participants drove the three road environments in which two zebra crossing with a pedestrian that crosses the road were implemented: in one case, the driver was helped by the Pedestrian Collision Warning System (PCWS) which provided a combined visual-auditive warning, while, in the other pedestrian crossing, the warning system was absent. The recorded interaction conditions between driver and pedestrian during the tests were classified in three groups according to Time To Zebra arrive \( \left( {{\text{TTZ}}_{\text{arr}}^{*} } \right) \). Results showed positive effects of PCWS that induced the driver to reach lower speeds in presence of that system, improving the general risk conditions at which the pedestrian is exposed during the interaction with drivers at crossroads.

The study aimed at exploring the mechanisms behind blood pressure and heart rate changes upon acute altitude exposure utilizing urinary excretion of biochemical factors involved in cardiovascular regulation. The study was conducted on 12 lowlander native male mountain climbers, living at sea level, exposed to altitudes ranging from 1800 to 5147 m above sea level over 4 days, during their ascent to Mount Ararat (Turkey). Blood pressure (measured by oscillometric method), heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded at rest (on awakening before food intake), in hypoxic conditions at 4200 m and at sea level before and after the altitude expedition. In the same study conditions (ie before-during-after the expedition), first-voided urinary samples were collected and assayed for 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α(8-iso-PGF2α) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) determination. Heart rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher (P < .05) at high altitude than at the sea level. Furthermore, both urinary 8-iso-PGF2αand ADMA were significantly elevated (P < .01) at high altitude and returned to normal levels soon after returning to sea level. A 4-day exposure to high-altitude hypoxia induced a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate, confirming previous findings. Blood pressure increase at high altitude was associated with significantly enhanced production of biochemical mediators such as 8-iso-PGF2α, catecholamines, and ADMA, although we could not demonstrate a direct link between these parallel significant changes probably due to the forcefully limited sample size of our study, carried out in challenging environmental conditions at very high altitude.

International audience; Purpose: The temporal lobe, a critical hub for cognition, also plays a central role in the regulation of autonomic cardiovascular functions. Lesions in this area are usually associated with abnormalities in the regulation of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). The analysis of the heart rate variability (HRV) is useful to evaluate the cardiac parasympathetic nervous system activity. This study aims at comparing HRV changes occurring in two groups of patients suffering from Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). To that aim, we evaluated patients differentiated by the right or left location of the epileptic foci. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two adult patients with a diagnosis of TLE were enrolled. Each patient underwent a 20-min EEG + EKG recording in resting state. According to the localization of epileptic focus, patients were divided into two subgroups: right TLE (R-TLE) and left TLE (L-TLE). HRV parameters were calculated with a short-lasting analysis of EKG recordings. Time-domain and frequency domain-related, as well as non-linear analysis, parameters, were compared between the two groups. Results: Compared to the R-TLE group, L-TLE subjects showed a significant decrease in low frequency (LF) (p < 0.01) and low frequency/high-frequency ratio (LF/HF) (p < 0.001) as well as increased HF values (p < 0.01), a parameter indicative of the presence of an increased cardiac vagal tone. These results were also confirmed in the subgroup analysis that took into account the seizure types, responses to antiepileptic drugs, seizure frequencies, and etiology. Conclusions: The main finding of the study is that, compared to R-TLE, L-TLE is associated with increased cardiac vagal tone. These results indicate that patients with TLE exhibit a lateralized cardiac autonomic control. L-TLE patients may have a lower risk of developing cardiac dysfunctions and less susceptible to develop Sudden Death for Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Motor abnormalities are highly prevalent in children with autism spectrum disorder and are strongly predictive of adaptive functioning. Despite the documented sex bias in the prevalence of the disorder, the impact of sex differences on motor abnormalities has been overlooked. The goal of this study was to investigate differences in the motor profile of boys and girls with autism spectrum disorder aged 3–11 years using a multimethod approach. Ninety-eight children with autism spectrum disorder and 98 typically developing children were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2, the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire, and the kinematic analysis of a reach-to-drop task. Results from principal components analysis on reach-to-drop-dependent measures indicated four components, accounting for kinematic parameters of the motor task. Irrespective of sex, children with autism spectrum disorder showed worse scores on Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 and Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire subscales than typically developing children. Interestingly, a diagnosis-by-sex interaction was found on a kinematic feature measured in the last part of the movement, with girls with autism spectrum disorder presenting altered motor anticipation. Although preliminary, these findings suggested that sex-related nuances in motor functioning of children with autism spectrum disorder could be insufficiently captured by existing motor measures. Lay abstract Motor peculiarities are often reported in children with autism spectrum disorder and may predict subsequent adaptive functioning and quality of life. Although the sex bias in the prevalence of the disorder is well documented, little is known about differences in motor profile in males and females with autism spectrum disorder. Our goal was to study differences in motor functioning of boys and girls with autism spectrum disorder aged 3–11 years compared with typically developing children. Their motor performances were evaluated using a multimethod approach, including standardized motor tests, caregiver reports, and a detailed motion capture analysis of a simple reach-to-drop movement. We found that, irrespective of sex, children with autism spectrum disorder had worse scores than typically developing children on standardized tests and on caregiver reports. Interestingly, girls with autism spectrum disorder, but not boys, presented altered motor anticipation in reach-to-drop. Our findings emphasize the need for more sex-specific assessment of motor function in autism spectrum disorder.

Deformations monitoring in airport runways and the surrounding areas is crucial, especially in cases of low-bearing capacity subgrades, such as the clayey subgrade soils. An effective monitoring of the infrastructure asset allows to secure the highest necessary standards in terms of the operational and safety requirements. Amongst the emerging remote sensing techniques for transport infrastructures monitoring, the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) technique has proven effective for the evaluation of the ground deformations. However, its use for certain demanding applications, such as the assessment of millimetric differential deformations in airport runways, is still considered as an open issue for future developments. In this study, a time-series analysis of COSMO–SkyMed satellite images acquired from January 2015 to April 2019 is carried out by employing the PSI technique. The aim is to retrieve the mean deformation velocity and time series of the surface deformations occurring in airport runways. The technique is applied to Runway 3 at the “Leonardo da Vinci” International Airport in Rome, Italy. The proposed PSI technique is then validated by way of comparison with the deformation outcomes obtained on the runway by traditional topographic levelling over the same time span. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the applied PSI technique for the assessment of deformations in airport runways.

Summary Objective To compare brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the differential diagnosis of intracranial hypotension (IH), Chiari malformation (CM) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Methods BAEP were recorded in 18 IH, 18 CM, 20 SNHL patients and 52 controls. MRI were acquired in all IH and CM patients. Results Abnormal BAEP were observed in 94% of IH patients, in 33% of CM and 70% of SNHL patients. After recovery from IH, BAEP abnormalities disappeared. Internal auditory canal (IAC) MRI abnormalities were described in 88% of IH patients. MRI signs of IH were observed in 33–78% in IH patients, but the most frequent MRI sign was 8th nerve T2 hyperintensity, with contrast enhancement in T1 sequences. This finding, combined with wave I latency, yielded highest specificity and sensitivity for IH diagnosis. Conclusions Our study points out how IH can be effectively distinguished from CM and SNHL through the contribution of neurophysiology and MRI; in particular, evaluation of the 8th nerve achieves a high sensitivity and specificity in patients with IH. Further studies are required to examine the combined use of BAEP recordings ad MRI in diagnosis and monitoring of patients affected by IH.

Highlights • Focal status epilepticus has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with aphasia, even in the absence of previous history of epilepsy. • Aphasia can be a rare presenting sign of insular lobe epilepsy. • Lateralized periodic discharges could represent an EEG ictal pattern., Objective Insular lobe seizures generally represent a misconceived ictal phenomenon characterized by specific neurological signs. Aphasia can be a rare presenting sign associated with insular lobe epilepsy which could be easily mistaken for a manifestation of other acute brain diseases. Method We describe an insular status epilepticus (SE) characterized by sudden onset of language disturbance associated with hypersalivation and paraesthesia. A concomitant EEG recording showed the presence of Lateralized Periodic Discharges plus superimposed fast activity (LPDs + F). After an adequate acute endovenous anti-seizure treatment, a normalization of the EEG abnormalities with a complete resolution of all the neurological symptoms was achieved. Discussion Language disturbances can be usually found in various pathological acute pictures involving the dominant frontal and temporal lobes. The presence of certain EEG pattern, could rise the suspect of aphasia as a critical manifestation. LPDs pattern is usually correlated with structural lesions. The association between LPDs and seizure is controversial but it seems to be more consistent when they are associated with “Plus modifiers” and with an high periodic frequency. Conclusion Our case underlines the importance of considering focal SE in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting aphasia, even in the absence of previous history of epilepsy. We describe how LPDs can be associated with SE in a patient affected by a brain tumour, supporting the idea that some characteristic periodic patterns could be associated with seizure occurrence.

ObjectiveEarly diagnosis of natalizumab-related progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (NTZ-PML) in multiple sclerosis has been deemed a major priority by the regulatory agencies but has yet to become a reality. The current paper aims to: (1) investigate whether patients with NTZ-PML pass through a prolonged presymptomatic phase with MRI abnormalities, (2) estimate the longitudinal PML lesion volume increase during the presymptomatic phase and (3) estimate the presymptomatic phase length and its impact on therapy duration as a risk stratification parameter.MethodsAll Italian patients who developed NTZ-PML between 2009 and 2018 were included. The data of patients with available prediagnostic MRI were analysed (n=41). Detailed clinical and neuroradiological information was available for each participant.Results(1) PML lesions were detectable in the presymptomatic phase in 32/41 (78%) patients; (ii) the lesion volume increased by 62.8 % for each month spent in the prediagnostic phase; (3) the prediagnostic phase length was 150.8±74.9 days; (4) PML MRI features were detectable before the 24th month of therapy in 31.7 % of patients in our cohort.ConclusionsConsidering the latency of PML clinical manifestation, the presymptomatic phase length supports the usefulness of MRI surveillance every 3–4 months. Early diagnosis could prompt a better outcome for patients due to the relationship between lesion volume and JC virus infection. The insight from this study might also have an impact on risk stratification algorithms, as therapy duration as a parameter of stratification appears to need reassessment.

It is usually seen in association with neurological disorders and rarely can follow radiotherapy. We report a case of a 54-year-old man survivor of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), who developed DHS 28 years after radiotherapy. He was referred to our department due to progressive weakness and atrophy of cervical paraspinal and shoulder girdle musculature. Physical and neurophysiological examination, electromyography and MRI confirmed the diagnosis of DHS. In the following years, there was no progression of symptoms.

Cannabinoid (CB) and opioid systems are both involved in analgesia, food intake, mood and behavior. Due to the co-localization of µ-opioid (MOR) and CB1 receptors in various regions of the central nervous system (CNS) and their ability to form heterodimers, bivalent ligands targeting to both these systems may be good candidates to investigate the existence of possible cross-talking or synergistic effects, also at sub-effective doses. In this work, we selected from a small series of new Rimonabant analogs one CB1R reverse agonist to be conjugated to the opioid fragment Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-NH2. The bivalent compound (9) has been used for in vitro binding assays, for in vivo antinociception models and in vitro hypothalamic perfusion test, to evaluate the neurotransmitters release.

The two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of 4,4′-bis(para-di-n-butylaminostyryl)-2,2′-bipyridine (NBu2bipy) and related dipolar ([ZnY2(NBu2bipy)] (Y = Cl, CF3CO2), [Zn(2,2′-bipyridine)2(NBu2bipy)] [PF6]2) and octupolar ([Zn(NBu2bipy)3][PF6]2) complexes were investigated by the two-photon emission (TPE) technique in a femtosecond regime, working in the 730-930 nm spectral range. We found, in contrast with previous literature data, that the TPA enhancement upon coordination of a TPA active ligand to a metal center may be larger in the dipolar rather than the corresponding octupolar complex, the response being easily modulated by the choice of the ancillary ligands. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. X-ray structure, electrochemical, and nonlinear optical characterization of indolic squaraines as Two-Photon absorbing (TPA) dyes in the visible region was investigated. Squaraines are the condensation product of electron rich molecules, usually activated arenes,π-excessive heterocycles and heteromorphic anhydrobases, with squaric acid. Squaraines were synthesized by refluxing the appropriate indole precursor and squaric acid in a BuOH/toluene mixture under a Dean-Stark trap for a required period of time. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were performed to probe molecular energy levels and the extent of intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions. It was reported that the design and synthesis of π-extended squaraines exhibiting very large TPA cross section efficiencies localized in the NIR region, with the peak performances above 1μm.

Time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption experiments uncover a distinct change in the relaxation dynamics of the homo-dimer formed by two 2,5-bis[1-(4-N-methylpyridinium)ethen-2-yl)]-N-methylpyrrole ditriflate (M) units linked by a short alkyl chain when compared to that of the monomer M. Fluorescence decay traces reveal characteristic decay times of 1.1 ns and 210 ps for M and the dimer, respectively. Transient absorption spectra in the spectral range of 425-1050 nm display similar spectral features for both systems, but strongly differ in the characteristic relaxation times gathered from a global fit of the experimental data. To rationalize the data we propose that after excitation of the dimer the energy localizes on one M branch and then decays to a dark state, peculiar only of the dimer. This dark state relaxes to the ground state within 210 ps through non-radiative relaxation. The nature of the dark state is discussed in relation to different possible photophysical processes such as excimer formation and charge transfer between the two M units. Anisotropy decay traces of the probe-beam differential transmittance of M and the dimer fall on complete different time scales as well. The anisotropy decay for M is satisfactorily ascribed to rotational diffusion in DMSO, whereas for the dimer it occurs on a faster time scale and is likely caused by energy-transfer processes between the two monomer M units. A dark mistery: Time-resolved experiments reveal a distinct change in the decay dynamic of an A-π-D-π-A molecule upon formation of a covalently linked non-conjugated dimer. The faster decay observed in the dimer is attributed to a dark state, which is presumably associated with charge delocalization between the two multipolar units

Two dimers of a heteroaromatic quadrupolar (acceptor-donor-acceptor) chromophore have been synthesized with different interchromophoric distances. Optical spectra of dimers in solution show a red shift of the linear absorption band upon decreasing the interchromophore distance, while fluorescence and two-photon absorption spectra are only marginally affected by the interactions. A bottom up approach is adopted to describe the spectra: via a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the monomeric species in solution, we define an essential-state model for the isolated chromophore and use this information to set up a model for the dimers also accounting for interchromophore electrostatic interactions. To discriminate between static screening governed by the static dielectric constant and dynamical screening at optical frequencies, we first solve the problem in the mean-field approximation and then define the excitonic Hamiltonian on the resulting best excitonic basis. Along this line, the evolution of spectral properties with the interchromophore distance is properly rationalized.

Singlet oxygen sensitization by organic molecules is a topic of major interest in the development of both efficient photodynamic therapy (PDT) and aerobic oxidations under complete green chemistry conditions. We report on the design, synthesis, biology, and complete spectroscopic characterization (vis-NIR linear and two-photon absorption spectroscopy, singlet oxygen generation efficiencies for both one-and two-photon excitation, electrochemistry, intrinsic dark toxicity, cellular uptake, and subcellular localization) of three classes of innovative singlet oxygen sensitizers pertaining to the family of symmetric squaraine derivatives originating from π-excessive heterocycles. The main advantage of π-extended squaraine photosensitizers over the large number of other known photosensitizers is their exceedingly strong two-photon absorption enabling, together with sizable singlet oxygen sensitization capabilities, for their use at the clinical application relevant wavelength of 806 nm. We finally show encouraging results about the dark toxicity and cellular uptake capabilities of water-soluble squaraine photosensitizers, opening the way for clinical small animal PDT trials. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

In this work we present an investigation of the non-linear optical (NLO) properties of two octupolar chromophores: [Zn(4,4'-bis(dibutylaminostyryl)-[2,2']-bipyridine)(3)](2+) and [Zn(4,4'-bis((E)-2-(N-(TEG)pyrrol-2-yl)vinyl)-[2,2']-bipyridine)(3)](2+) with Zn(ii) as the coordination center, using two-photon emission technique (TPE) in fs-pulse temporal regime. Compared to the free ligands, our results do not show a net increase in the two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section for the octupolar complexes, once normalized to the ligand unit. This is in partial disagreement with a previous theoretical study investigating the first molecule where a significant increase of the TPA cross-section was predicted (X. J. Liu, et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2004, 120, 11 493).

A novel scheme for implementing the joint exploitation of different, somehow complementary mechanisms of nonlinear transmission in an optical limiting device is proposed. As active materials we have chosen the fullerene derivative FULP, as a reverse saturable absorber, and a new heterocyclic quadrupolar dye, PEPEP, with highly efficient multiphoton absorption for nanosecond pulses. The nonlinear absorption properties of PEPEP in solution are extensively investigated for both femtosecond and nanosecond pulses. When Z-scan experiments are performed with nanosecond pulses, much larger effective cross sections are measured than with femtosecond pulses and with remarkably different wavelength dispersion. This is interpreted as due to two-photon absorption followed by one-photon absorption from the excited state. Chemically modified nonlinear molecules are incorporated in a hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel matrix. Sufficiently high concentrations are achieved to allow the assembling of thin sol-gel disks into a "tandem" limiter with a total thickness smaller than the Rayleigh range of the focused laser beam. Preliminary testing of our limiter is reported and shows encouraging results. The resistance of the FULP-doped sol-gel glass to laser damage is substantially improved and the nonlinear attenuation at high pulse energies is enhanced.

The multiphoton absorption properties of an organic push-molecule are investigate with nano- (ns) and femto-second (fs) laser sources. The active molecule is a new quadrupolar dye, named PEPEP, where heterocyclic units act as strong donor-acceptor moieties. Z-scan and pump-probe experiments (both single-color and with white light pulses) allow us to measure the value and the wavelength dispersion of the cross section for instantaneous two photon absorption (TPA). When Z-scan experiments are performed with nanosecond pulses, much larger effective cross sections are measured than with femtosecond pulses and with remarkably different wavelength dispersion. This is interpreted as due to two-photon absorption followed by one-photon absorption from the excited state (TPA-ESA). The TPA (or TPA-ESA) spectrum is measured, through pump-probe and z-scan measurements in a large visible range, in order to find the peak wavelength for multiphoton absorption.
