We present initial results of an investigation of the near infrared absorption spectrum of NH between 6468 and 6692 cm. A widely tunable external cavity diode laser is used in a direct absorption setup to determine the line positions and line strengths of several lines in that spectral range. Line data measurements on a NH sample are used for validation of the setup by comparison of the results with available literature data. The presented overview measurements on absorption lines of NH have been performed to serve as a starting point for candidate line selection for prospective isotopic ratio measurements of NH and NH. Objective: Two research projects were analyzed in order to identify key factors of success and/or failure in introducing patient card-based systems in clinical routine.Methods: In DIABCARD an evaluation study focussing on user friendliness and user acceptance was conducted. In ByMedCard-HCPP the project's system was validated and the timeliness of the project's work analyzed.Results: User friendliness and user acceptance of the DIABCARD system were fairly high. The ByMedCard-HCPP system was complete in its major components and functionalities; introducing the ByMedCard-HCPP system in clinical routine delayed the project.Conclusions: A multitude of key factors of success such as utilized technologies, user involvement, and commitment of partners seems to contribute to the success and/or failure of introducing patient card-based systems in healthcare. A compact fiber-optic diode laser spectrometer for the measurement of CO and CO2 gas concentrations in the near infrared around 1580 nm is described. By use of a balanced receiver to suppress diode laser intensity noise a sensitivity of 6.4×10-7 at 1 Hz system bandwidth was achieved. At a reduced pressure of 80 hPa this equals to a detection limit of 5.1 ppm CO and 9.1 ppm CO2 with 1 m absorption path length. The observed line shapes of the 2f wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) scheme are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Accurate measurements of magnitude and phase of the diode laser frequency and intensity modulation responses were found critically for modeling the observed line shapes. In situ measurements of gas dissociation processes inside of a medium-power carbon dioxide laser are presented as an application example. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We present experimental results on the lasing of a short distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) Raman fiber laser (RFL) with short cavity length. The high finesse laser cavity with an effective length of 17 cm was realized by direct inscription of two Bragg gratings into a short piece of highly nonlinear polarization maintaining Raman fiber. It is pumped by an Ytterbium fiber laser at 1100 nm with up to 8 W pump power. The Stokes wave at 1151 nm is generated within the DBR RFL with 700-mW output power and a narrow spectral full-width at half-maximum bandwidth of 60 pm. Due to the short cavity length, the number of oscillating longitudinal modes is strongly reduced to less than 24 modes. The short DBR RFL has a low lasing threshold of 4.1 W. Its spectral properties and temporal stability are investigated. Distinct longitudinal cavity modes could be observed within the radio-frequency intermode-beat spectrum detected with a fast photodiode. The measured mode separation of 607 MHz validates the short effective length of 17 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
