An architecture for a distributed and adaptive multi-sensor fusion engine is described. The engine is developed to improve the protection of European armed forces against the threats troops are facing in urban environments. In particular, the engine needs to be scalable, flexible to quickly adjust to different missions and mission goals, easily extendable and suited for distributed implementation. The architecture follows a layered approach to define the main information processing elements.

The K^- induced production of Lambda(1405) in the K^- d to pi Sigma n reaction is investigated having in mind the conditions of the DAFNE facility at Frascati where kaons are obtained from the decay of slow moving phi mesons. We find that the K^- d to Lambda(1405) n process favors the production of Lambda(1405) initiated by the K^- p channel, which gives largest weight to the higher mass Lambda(1405) appearing at 1420 MeV in chiral theories. We find that the fastest kaons from the decay of the phi are well suited to see this resonance, particularly if one selects forward going neutrons in the center of mass, which reduce the contribution of single scattering and make the double scattering dominate where the signal of the resonance appears clearer., 6pages, 7 figures

AIM: To explore whether, and why, patients change their food and eating practices following conversion to flexible intensive insulin therapy (FIIT), a regimen which requires quick acting insulin doses to be matched to the carbohydrate content of meals/snacks consumed. METHODS: repeat, in-depth interviews with 30 type 1 diabetes patients converted to FIIT recruited from Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) courses in the UK. Data were analysed using an inductive, thematic approach. RESULTS: despite the potential of FIIT to enable greater dietary flexibility and freedom, most patients reported food and eating practices which were remarkably resistant to change. In some cases, FIIT adoption resulted in greater dietary rigidity over time. The opportunities FIIT presented for greater dietary freedom were counterbalanced by new challenges and burdens (e.g. having to simplify food choices to make carbohydrate estimation easier). Due to the emphasis FIIT places on carbohydrate counting, and patients' fears of hypos, low/no carbohydrate foodstuffs sometimes came to be seen as the healthiest or safest options. CONCLUSION: concerns that FIIT may result in more excessive or unhealthy eating appear largely unfounded; however, consideration needs to be paid to the ways in which patients' conceptualisations of, and relationship with, food may change following FIIT conversion.

In the upcoming month the KLOE-2 data taking campaign will start at the upgraded DAFNE phi-factory of INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The main goal is to collect an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb^(-1) in 3-4 years in order to refine and extend the KLOE program on both kaon physics and hadron spectroscopy. Objective: To evaluate time trends in the availability of soft drinks, to identify food choices associated with their consumption and to assess the relationship between socio-economic status and daily soft drink availability in a wide range of European countries. Design: Data on food and beverage availability collected through the national household budget surveys and harmonized in the DAFNE (Data Food Networking) project were used. Averages and variability of soft drink availability were estimated and tests for time trends were performed. The daily availability of food groups which appear to be correlated with that of soft drinks was further estimated. Multivariate logistic and linear regression models were applied to evaluate the association between socio-economic status and the acquisition of soft drinks. Setting: Twenty-four European countries. Subjects: Nationally representative samples of households. Results: The availability of soft drinks is steadily and significantly increasing. Households in West and North Europe reported higher daily availability of soft drinks in comparison to other European regions. Soft drinks were also found to be correlated with lower availability of plant foods and milk and higher availability of meat and sugar products. Lower socio-economic status was associated with more frequent and higher availability of soft drinks in the household. Conclusions: Data collected in national samples of twenty-four European countries showed disparities in soft drink availability among socio-economic strata and European regions. The correlation of soft drinks with unfavourable dietary choices has public health implications, particularly among children and adolescents., DAFNE

Objective: To audit and describe the effects of participation in the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) course on clinical outcomes in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Design, setting and participants: Audit of clinical outcomes before and 1 year after DAFNE training for 145 people with T1DM who participated in courses at seven Australian diabetes centres between February 2005 and March 2007. Participants had been diagnosed with T1DM at least 1 year before and were beyond the “honeymoon phase”, with glycated haemoglobin (HbA 1c ) < 12% and no severe diabetes complications. They were aged over 17 years and able to understand written and spoken English. Intervention: A 5-day structured education program covering T1DM management with an emphasis on unrestricted diet, precise carbohydrate estimation and prandial insulin dosing using insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios. Main outcome measures: Glycaemic control (HbA1c levels), weight, severe hypoglycaemia, and quality of life scores on general (Hospital Anxiety and Depression) and diabetes-specific (Problem Areas in Diabetes) scales. Results: Mean HbA 1c fell from 8.2% to 7.8% (95% CI for change, −0.5% to −0.2%; P < 0.0001) and weight from 75.1 to 74.2 kg (95% CI for change, −1.6 to −0.2 kg; P =0 .012). Severe hypoglycaemia was less frequent after DAFNE training (P = 0.0001). Quality of life improved (P < 0.0001 for both scales). Conclusions: One year after participation in the DAFNE program of structured education, people with T1DM showed improved glycaemic control, reduced incidence of severe hypoglycaemia, slightly reduced weight and improved quality of life. Dedicated to the memory of Pietro Tiseo, INFN LNF.; International audience; Since the second half of year 2007, the Frascati Φ-factory DAFNE has been running with an upgraded interaction region in order to test the crabbed waist collision scheme. The aim is to reach a large improvement of the specific luminosity of the accelerator. We describe the various detectors realized to have a reliable and fast absolute luminosity measurement, the on-line analysis in order to get rid of the machine background contribution, and the performances of the system.

Worldwide dietary data for nutrition monitoring and surveillance are commonly derived from food balance sheets (FBS) and household budget surveys (HBS). We have compared food supply from FBS and food availability data from HBS among eighteen European countries and have estimated the extent to which they correlate, focusing on food groups which are comparably captured by FBS and HBS and for which there is epidemiological evidence that they can have a noticeable impact on population mortality. Spearman's correlation coefficient was +0·78 (P − 3) for vegetables (including legumes),+0·76 (P − 3) for fruits, +0·69 (P − 3) for fish and seafood and +0·93 (P − 3) for olive oil. With respect to meat and meat products, the coefficient was lower at +0·39 (P = 0·08). Moreover, we have examined whether the supply (FBS) or the availability (HBS) of food groups known or presumed to have beneficial effect on the occurrence of CHD and total cancer can predict overall, coronary and cancer mortality in ecological analyses. After controlling for purchasing power parity-adjusted gross domestic product and tobacco smoking we found that for vegetables, fruits, fish and seafood, as well as for olive oil, both the FBS and the HBS estimates were inversely associated with all three indicators of mortality, although the number of countries with complete information on all study variables hindered formal statistical documentation (P>0·05 in some instances). FBS and HBS have their own strengths and weaknesses, but they may complement each other in dietary assessments at the population level.

The Frascati Φ-Factory DAΦNE has been delivering luminosity to the KLOE, DEAR and FINUDA experiments since year 2000. During the current run for the KLOE experiment peak luminosity of 1.4 · 1032cm−2s−1 and integrated luminosity of 8.6pb−1/day have been achieved. The scientific program of the three high-energy experiments sharing DAΦNE operation will be completed approximately by the end of year 2007. A scientific program for DAΦNE beyond that date has not been defined yet and it is a matter of discussion in the high-energy physics and accelerator physics communities. In this paper we present some future scenarios for DAΦNE discussing the expected ultimate performances of the machine as it is now and addressing the design for an energy and/or luminosity upgrade. The options presented in the following are not exhaustive and they are intended to give a glance of what is doable using the existing infrastructures.

The KLOE experiment at the Frascati e + e - collider DAFNE has completed this year its data taking. An integrated luminosity of 2.7fb^-1 has been collected mostly at the φ-resonance peak. A wide experimental program is in progress. The detection of φ radiative decays allows to study the properties of the lowest-mass scalar and pseudoscalar mesons and to obtain information on their structure. The main results are reviewed together with the prospects for low-energy e + e - physics at Frascati.

In the last decade a wide experimental program has been carried on at DAFNE, e + e − collider of the Frascati National Laboratories running at a center of mass energy of 1020 MeV, the φ meson mass. Three experiments have run at DAFNE: KLOE, dedicated to kaon and hadronic physics, FINUDA, dedicated to the study of hypernuclei and DEAR, designed to study the production of kaonic atoms.

A step towards a more patient centred approach to delivery of care Effective self management is the cornerstone of good care for people with diabetes. High quality structured education that prepares people for a lifetime with the condition is a key enabler of self management. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between regional household diet quality and corresponding mortality data. Two household diet quality scores derived from household budget survey food and nutrient data were used: the Mediterranean Adequacy Index (MAI), assessing adherence to a Mediterranean food pattern, and a revised Healthy Diet Indicator (HDIr), based on compliance with WHO population dietary goals. Seven Portuguese regions were considered, in accordance with the officially adopted national territorial division NUT II. The corresponding regional age-standardised death rates were calculated for selected diet-related mortality causes. In order to allow for a minimum of 10 years latency period between exposure and outcome, dietary scores from 1989/1990 and its components were correlated to the 3-year average 1999/2001 death rates. Tobacco expenses were included for adjustment. Significant negative correlations with the proportion of families with highest MAI (≥4) or HDIr (≥7) scores were observed for mortality from diabetes mellitus (−0.87, P < 0.05; −0.89, P < 0.5), cardiovascular diseases (−0.89, P < 0.05; −0.96, P < 0.01) and ischaemic heart disease (−0.89, P < 0.05; −0.90, P < 0.05). Malignant neoplasms were positively correlated with protein, cholesterol and soft drinks, but inversely with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Diabetes showed significant positive correlations with simple sugars and animal fat intake, but inversely with fruits and vegetables. Cardiovascular diseases presented positive correlations with simple sugars, milk and dairy products and animal fat, but inverse with fruits and vegetables and vegetable oils. Despite the limitations of ecological approaches in general and of the statistical power in this particular study, due to the use of broad geographical areas, significant correlations in the expected direction of reduced mortality risk with improved household diet quality was reported. The use of diet quality scores in data from household budget surveys could depict variations in Portuguese regional food and nutrient patterns, which were revealed to be related and partially explain differences in regional cause-specific mortality rates from diet-related diseases.

ObjectiveTo describe a cost-efficient method for estimating energy and nutrient availability using household budget survey (HBS) data.DesignFour different approaches were tested and the results were compared with published nutrient intake data. The selected method was exemplarily applied in German and Greek data.SettingGermany, 1998; Greece, 1998/99.MaterialNationally representative HBSs.ResultsComparisons showed that HBS-based estimates were generally close to intake data when results were presented as contributions to daily energy intake. Daily energy and protein availabilities were similar in Germany and Greece. Differences were observed in the availability of carbohydrates (German households reported a 5 percentage points higher contribution to daily energy availability) and lipids (Greek households recorded higher values for total fat, but lower values for saturated fat). Meat, added lipids and potatoes were important energy suppliers in Germany, whereas in Greece the first three energy suppliers were added lipids, cereals and meat. In both countries, meat, cereals, milk and cheese were important protein sources and cereals, potatoes, fruits and nuts contributed more than 60% of the daily carbohydrate availability. Added lipids were the major source of fat in the daily diet of both countries, but their contribution amounted to less than one-third in Germany and two-thirds in Greece.ConclusionsNational HBS data can be used for monitoring and comparing nutrient availability among representative population samples of different countries. The ground is set for the development of a harmonised food composition table to be applied to HBS food data at international level.

Background: Evidence-based, structured education is recommended for all people with diabetes; tailored to meet their personal needs and learning styles. Adult courses exist in the UK but are of limited value for children. The aim of this study was to adapt the adult Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) course to design a skills training course, for children aged 11–16 yr, focusing on self-management skills within an intensive insulin regime. To ensure that the course format meets the developmental, intellectual and social needs of children and adolescents and is delivered using educationally sound techniques. Methods: Relevant professionals and potential users of the course were involved in curriculum design and content in the following ways: (i) The views of 95 pediatric diabetes specialist nurses were sought through a postal survey; (ii) Focus group discussions were conducted with children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and their families to contribute to content and design; and (iii) Secondary school teachers worked with experienced pediatric diabetes staff advising on educational content and teaching format. Results: The developed curriculum uses a progressive modular-based structure to improve self-management in a variety of medical and social situations. It has clear learning objectives and is based on the format of UK schools curricula. Additional support is provided through dedicated parent sessions, involvement of friends and the provision of a school resource pack. Conclusion: Collaborative working between health professionals, school teachers and families has resulted in an age-appropriate curriculum, which employs validated educational techniques. This will be refined following pilot courses before formal evaluation in a multicentre randomized controlled trial.

We have studied the Dalitz plot of the e(+)e(-) -> pi(0)pi(0)gamma events (N(pi)0(pi)0 gamma similar to 65 000) collected at root s similar or equal to M-phi with the KLOE detector. In the dipion invariant mass (M-pi pi) region below 700MeV, the process under study is dominated by the non- resonant process e(+)e(-) -> omega pi(0) with omega -> pi(0)gamma whereas, for higher M-pi pi values, the radiative phi decay to the f(0)(980) is the dominant mechanism. Different theoretical models are used to fit the Dalitz plot, taking also into account a possible contribution of the sigma(600). For each model, we extract the f(0)(980) mass and its coupling to pi pi, K (K) over bar and to the phi.

The Frascati Phi-factory DAFNE has successfully completed experimental runs for the three main detectors, KLOE, FINUDA and DEAR. The best peak luminosity achieved so far is 1.6x10^32 cm-2s-1, while the best daily integrated luminosity is 10 pb-1. At present the DAFNE team is preparing an upgrade of the collider based on the novel crab waist collision scheme. The upgrade is aimed at pushing the luminosity towards 10^33 cm-2s-1. DaFnE (German abbreviation: Deutsch als Fremdsprache nach Englisch – German after English) is an approach to teaching German as a third language to students who have already learned English. This methodology, which combines a first language (L1) with English as a second language (L2) and German as a third language (L3), is gaining popularity in Poland. This article contains both theoretical background and empirical research related to DaFnE. The first part introduces relevant definitions, aims of the DaFnE method and a short history of Tertiary Language Learning. The second part discusses teaching materials, which were created by the author of the article and used during empirical research in primary schools in the region of Greater Poland. Additionally, the paper includes results of surveys among the students and interviews among the German teachers.

No structured educational programmes for patients with CFRD exist in the UK. We developed the diabetes in cystic fibrosis-education (DICE) programme by adapting DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating), a structured education programme for type 1 diabetics. Patients receive 1:1 education focused on carbohydrate counting and insulin dose adjustment. Aim To determine whether the introduction of DICE improves quality of life (QoL) of patients with CFRD. Methods DICE was delivered by two DAFNE trained educators. Each participant received four, three hour education sessions with the same educator over eight weeks. Outcomes were measured at 0, 6 and 12 months; this paper presents data on the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL) questionnaire and CFQ-R. Results 18 participants were recruited, 15 completed the study. No significant changes in the CFQ-R domain scores were observed. Conclusions Although some positive changes were noted in QoL these were not significant. The small sample size and greater dietary freedom in the management of patients with CFRD may explain this. Introduction I was taken aback by unattributed criticism of 'consultant clinicians' (sic) in the minutes of a recent meeting of the UK APPG for Diabetes investigating the provision of education for people with diabetes.1 Apparently they 'lamentably have failed to champion education across the country. They have failed their patients and failed their profession...'. When questions about access to diabetes education were included in the National Diabetes Audit for the first time, it appeared that provision was low across England and Wales with 6% of all people with type 2 diabetes being offered structured education.2 However only 1.6% of people with type 2 diabetes who were offered structured education participated. At the subsequent APPG meeting, I listened to articulate and passionate consumers of diabetes education and some articulate and passionate providers of the same – some of whom were consultant clinicians! Some people were very pleased with the education they had received (notably via DAFNE, DESMOND and X-PERT courses), but not all were so impressed. Low attendance at courses was seen by some as inevitable, but others had made efforts to address this and driven attendance up.3 Perhaps it is in the nature of users of an NHS that is free at the point of need to take what they want and leave what they do not fancy – usually preventative measures such as screening, immunisation and education. There might appear to be an absence of carrot and stick.

DAFNE, the Frascati phi factory, has been in operation since 1999. At the center of the physics program is the KLOE experiment, a multipurpose detector with optimizations for tagged and interferometry-based measurements of the neutral kaon system. KLOE has been taking data since 2000 and has helped to explore a wide array of topics in kaon and hadronic physics, including a comprehensive set of measurements to determine the CKM matrix element |Vus|, and a measurement of the e+e- --> pi+pi- cross section for the determination of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly. In addition, the DEAR experiment has measured the X-ray spectrum of kaonic hydrogen, and the FINUDA experiment has conducted its first studies in hypernuclear spectroscopy and a search for \bar{K}-nuclear bound states. We review the design, construction, and operation of the DAFNE facility, with an emphasis on the physics program of the KLOE experiment., 39 pages, 18 figures. This article emphasises the need to assess quality of life (QoL) as a key outcome of diabetes management and introduces the linguistically validated and culturally adapted, Hindi and Punjabi versions of an individualised questionnaire (the ADDQoL) to assess the impact of diabetes on the QoL of Indian people with diabetes. ADDQoL findings in the UK indicated that approaches to diabetes management were needed that allowed for dietary freedom. Use of the ADDQoL in the subsequent DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) trial showed significant benefits to quality of life from training in insulin dose adjustment to provide for dietary freedom without loss of diabetes control. ADDQoL findings from research in India have helped highlight the negative impact of diabetes on various life domains of Indian people with diabetes, especially their self-confidence, their family life and their freedom to eat as they wish. It is suggested that targets of diabetes management are more likely to be achieved if the importance of protecting and improving QoL is recognised and monitored alongside biomedical outcomes such as blood glucose levels.

The study objective was to estimate food and nutrient availability in Bolivian households using data from the nationally representative under the Programme for the household surveys undertaken yearly from 1999 to 2002 Improvement of Surveys and the Measurement of Living Conditions in Latin America and the Caribbean (MECOVI). In the present study, we analysed data from four repeated, cross-sectional surveys and applied European Data Food Networking (DAFNE) methodology for post-harmonising the data. Raw data of 19 483 households in Bolivia (3035 in 1999, 4857 in 2000, 5845 in 2001 and 5746 in 2002) were retrieved from the databases of the national household surveys. Results showed that the Bolivian diet is characterised by higher availability of foods of plant origin (cereals, fruits, potatoes and vegetables). Meat, milk and their products follow in the dietary preferences of Bolivians. Disparities in food availability within the country were also observed. Rural households systematically recorded lower amounts of food available, in comparison with the urban ones. Households of higher social status recorded higher availability values for all food groups, except for potatoes and cereals. Findings suggest that Bolivian households of lower socio-economic status prefer energy-dense and cheaper food sources. We concluded the dietary and socio-demographic data collected in the MECOVI household surveys could serve nutrition surveillance purposes. In addition, the application of DAFNE methodology for post-harmonising the data allows both national and international comparisons.

We have measured the fully inclusive K+ -> mu(+)v(y) absolute branching ratio with the KLOE experiment at DM phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory. From some 865283 K+ -> mu(+)v(gamma) decays obtained from a sample of similar to 5.2 x 10(8), phi-meson decays, we find BR(K+ -> mu+v(mu),(gamma)) = 0.6366 +/- 0.0009(stat.) +/- 0.0015(syst)., corresponding to an overall fractional error of 0.27%. Using recent lattice results on the decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons one can obtain an estimate for the CKM mixing matrix element vertical bar V(us)vertical bar = 0.2223 +/- 0.0026.

positron beams in the energy range tens of MeV-750 MeV in a wide range of intensity, from 1 up to 10^10 particles per pulse. The pulse rate is 50Hz. This paper describes the implementation of two types of high granularity silicon beam monitors: two pairs of silicon strip detectors readout by single particle ASICs for the low multiplicity range (1-100 particles) and a silicon strip detector with charge integrating electronics to cover the remaining range (100-10^10). Both the silicon detectors are characterized by large dimensions (up to 9.5x9.5 cm^2) and a granularity in the 100μm range. The paper describes the two systems and the results obtained during several dedicated runs.

We propose an accelerator physics experiment in DAFNE to prove the regime of bunch length modulation in storage rings, which has never been tested before in any existing accelerator. The result of the experiment can be of great interest for the future colliders and for the synchrotron light sources. The concept has been developed at the Divisione Acceleratori in the framework of super-factory studies. Collaborations with international groups interested in the experiment have been set-up.

Diabetes education has a long history in Europe. The first person to introduce patient education in type 2 diabetes was Apollinaire Bouchardat, in his book ‘Le Diabete Sucre’ (1883). Another key person was Karl Stolte, who introduced insulin dose adjustment for normal eating. Structured education, provided in groups of patients, was introduced in Europe by Jean-Philippe Assal in the late 1970s and was, from there, implemented in numerous places throughout Europe. The most recent convincing study came from the UK, an ambulatory programme called DAFNE. A major achievement of European diabetology has been the training of diabetes educators. As an example, the development and increase in diabetes educators in Germany over the past twenty years is given. This article ends with recommendations for future research in patient education and honors Michael Berger, who was important in promoting not only evidence-based medicine in diabetology, but also the implementation of educational programmes in Germany and further afield.

The Kloe experiment has measured the radiative decays of the phi meson into pi(0), eta and eta'(958),these measurements are relevant to assess' the mixing in the pseudoscalar nonet as well as to evaluate the gluon content in the eta'(958). Moreover also the radiative decays into pi(0)pi(0)gamma and etapi(0)gamma have been measured. These decays axe dominated by the final states f(o)(980) and a(o)(980). The measurement of the branching ratios and of the pi(0)-pi(0) or eta-pi(0) invariant mass spectrum helps to understand the controversial nature of the above scalar mesons.

The KLOE experiment at DANE, the Frascati phi-factory, is presented. Recent results obtained by the KLOE Collaboration using data collected during years 2000-2002 (500 pb^-1) are shown, concerning measurements of several absolute and relative branching ratios for neutral and charged kaons decays.

We have measured the absolute branching ratio BR(K+/- --> pi(+/-)pi(0)pi(0)) with the KLOE detector at the DAPhiNE e(+)e(-) collider. We collected similar to 3.3 x 10(7) tagged charged kaons, from the reaction e(+)e(-) --> phi --> K+K-. We find BR(K+/- --> pi(+/-)pi(0)pi(0)) = (1.763 +/- 0.013(stat) +/- 0.022(syst)) x 10(-2).

The broad physics program of the KLOE experiment is based on the high event rate at the Frascati phi factory, and calls for an up-to-date system for data acquisition and processing. In this review of the KLOE offline environment, the architecture of the data-processing system and the programs developed for data reconstruction and Monte Carlo simulation are described, as well as the various procedures used for data handling and transfer between the different components of the system., Comment: 49 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Nucl. The measurement of hadronic cross sections, especially at low centre-of-mass energies, is currently attracting a lot of attention due to the role these measurements play in the theoretical evaluation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The KLOE experiment at the DAPhiNE phi-factory in Frascati aims at a measurement of the cross section of the dominant process e(+)e(-) --> pi(+)pi(-) at energies below 1 GeV exploiting the radiative return from the phi to the rho and omega mesons. This method has systematical errors completely different from previous measurements. The method of the measurement as well as the current status of the analysis axe presented.

The KLOE experiment at DA/spl Phi/NE is largely devoted to the study of discrete symmetries in the K/sub S/K/sub L/ system. During 2001-2002, KLOE collected 1.4 /spl times/ 10/sup 9/ /spl phi/ decays, for a total data volume of nearly 200 TB. We describe the KLOE computing environment, outlining our solutions to issues of calibration, reconstruction, data reduction, and data access for analysis. We discuss the performance of the system, with particular emphasis on the data-processing and transfer rates, and also describe the generation of large Monte Carlo samples. The KLOE computing environment has been been demonstrated to be flexible and scalable in the presence of rapidly evolving data-taking conditions.

Background: There is a need in Europe for sources of dietary data that would provide a regular flow of comparable nutrition information. In this context, the Data Food Networking (DAFNE) project has been developing a cost-effective food databank that allows monitoring of food availability within and between countries. Methods: The DAFNE project has developed a common classification system for the food and socio-demographic variables recorded in the national household budget surveys. Daily individual food availability was estimated for each participating country and basic descriptive statistics were used to depict the nutritional habits of the populations. Results: The DAFNE databank is freely accessible through DafneSoft (www.nut.uoa.gr). Three figures, based on Greek, Norwegian and UK data respectively, were selected to indicatively present the potential of the DAFNE data in order to monitor changes in the availability of 12 food groups over time; to study the effect of education in the total added lipid availability; and to follow time changes in fresh vegetable availability between manual and non-manual households. Conclusion: The HBS data allows the highlighting of issues related to nutrition surveillance. The application of the DAFNE methodology in developing a databank of standardized dietary data offers a realistic option for monitoring dietary habits in Europe. Benefiting from this potential, the European Union may additionally consider the undertaking of a pan-European individual dietary survey, in a sub-sample of the household budget population.

Following on from the first article in this series (Vol 12(18): 1091–5), which described the history of diabetes, this article, the second of three literature reviews, explores the early production and development of insulin, from its initial production in a university laboratory to becoming a major pharmaceutical product. Also discussed are the various forms of insulin developed over the last 80 years and their means of delivery to the patient. The future is considered and the development of insulin analogues (substances that mimic the effect of human insulin) is described. The article also looks at the introduction of DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) — an intensive programme of education aimed at teaching individuals the necessary skills to adjust their own insulin injection dosage to reflect their individual eating patterns.

An optical-fiber local area network DAFNE (Deterministic Access Fiber Network), for industrial applications is presented. Important aspects such as reliability and fault tolerance are discussed. The general features and the hardware software structure of the network are dealt with. Hard failures that can affect DAFNE are analyzed, and a general approach to error recovery is proposed. An implemented monitoring process resident at the network management level, able to tolerate the main hard failures through suitable network reconfigurations, is described. >

However, the only evidence cited was anecdotal.

Many of the early rapid responses to the DAFNE trial paper (1) [see bmj.com] claimed that improved quality of life (QoL) resulting from flexible intensified insulin treatment was well established prior to the DAFNE trial (Ullman, 5th Oct; Black, 6th Oct; Chaufan, 12th Oct). However, the only evidence cited was anecdotal.

The stringent requirements of the KLOE experiment on dimensions, efficiency, resolution and transparency of its drift chamber led to building a tracking device which can be considered innovative from many points of view. Details of the design and construction of this detector, together with preliminary results from the test of its full scale prototype, constructed and operated under a test beam at CERN, are presented and discussed.

Introduction A low FODMAP diet has demonstrated symptom improvement in patients with IBS when conducted during individual consultations. 1 Structured dietetic group education is a well recognised medium for encouraging self-management and promoting confidence in patients with chronic illness .2 There is a lack of research in the use of low FODMAP dietary intervention in a group setting. This audit was conducted to assess the efficacy and feasibility of providing low FODMAP dietary advice in a group environment. Methods Data was collected using the ‘IBS satisfaction survey’ 3 which was given to 17 patients with IBS on completion of the 8 week low FODMAP diet. The following question was used to monitor effectiveness of the low FODMAP diet: ‘Do you currently have satisfactory relief from your gut symptoms’? This is a closed question, completed anonymously, with a choice response of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Feasibility of a group format was measured via attendee’s feedback and non-attendance (DNA) rate. Feedback was collected using an evaluation questionnaire (6 point Likert scale – very satisfied, satisfied, acceptable, dissatisfied, very dissatisfied, unsure) after the group session. Results 21 patients attended the initial session. 4 patients (19%) failed to attend the follow up session. 82% (14 /17) of patients who completed the education programme reported satisfactory relief of gut symptoms. 100% of patients were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the presentation and group discussion. 94% were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the organisation of the group session. Conclusion Group education for low FODMAP diet therapy is a feasible and effective method for promoting symptom improvement for IBS patients. Group education has the potential to be at least as effective as one-to-one low FODMAP IBS education. Further randomised control studies with large sample sizes are recommended. The Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme of intensive insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes provides a structured educational intervention to improve glycemic control, reduce hypoglycemia and improve quality of life. Enhancement of self-management skills is a key element of DAFNE and patients acquire detailed skills in insulin dose adjustment. Following DAFNE training, patients report improved confidence in their ability to manage their own insulin dosing, but generally still seek and require the assistance of health professionals when making substantial changes to their insulin regimens. Some DAFNE trained patients may be able to assist their peers in aspects of diabetes management within a group environment, but widespread introduction of the expert patient/peer educator role in the self-management of type 1 diabetes, in particular related to insulin dose management, would require formal and detailed evaluation, preferably in randomized controlled clinical trials, before being introduced into routine clinical practice.
