This research investigates the antibacterial potential of plant essential oil components including thymol, carvacrol, citral, cinnamaldehyde, limonene, and β-pinene against Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis). Through the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration, three kinds of natural antibacterial agents with the best inhibitory effect on S. Enteritidis were determined, namely thymol (128 μg/mL), carvacrol (256 μg/mL), and cinnamaldehyde (128 μg/mL). Physical, chemical, microbial, and sensory characteristics were regularly monitored on days 0, 2, 4, and 6. The findings of this study reveal that both thymol at MIC of 128 μg/mL and carvacrol at MIC of 256 μg/mL not only maintained the sensory quality of chicken, but also decreased the pH, moisture content, and TVB-N value. Additionally, thymol, carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde successfully inhibited the formation of S. Enteritidis biofilm, thereby minimizing the number of S. Enteritidis and the total aerobic plate count in chicken. Hence, thymol, carvacrol, and cinnamaldehyde have more effective inhibitory activities against S. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disorder manifested by joint damage due to inflammation and autoimmunity which in turn has significant impacts on a patient's lifestyle. During disease, inflammation occurs due to activation of different immune cells, including macrophages and lymphocytes. Currently, the mainstay of treatment for RA is drug therapy. However, drug options are limited due to their negative effects and the possibility of reducing therapeutic benefits over time. Therefore, an effective and tolerable alternative therapy is needed. Several natural products have been found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects by affecting multiple molecular targets such as transcription factors and cytokines. Cinnamon, an aromatic plant, is a popular spice used for cooking and in traditional medicine all over the world. Cinnamon is composed mostly of essential oils and various components, such as cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. This review demonstrates the anti-inflammatory activity of cinnamon components in various preclinical and clinical studies illustrating their potential role in the treatment of RA. Researchers have explored natural products to combat the antibiotic resistance of various microorganisms. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN), a major component of cinnamon essential oil (CC-EO), has been found to effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mildew, as well as their production of toxins. Therefore, this study aimed to create a delivery system for CIN using PLGA microparticles (CIN-MPs), and to compare the antifungal activity of the carried and free CIN, particularly against antibiotic-resistant strains of Candida spp. The first part of the study focused on synthesizing and characterizing the PLGA MPs, which had no toxic effects in vivo and produced results in line with the existing literature. The subsequent experiments analyzed the antifungal effects of MPs-CIN on Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, both resistant (R) and sensitive (S) strains and compared its efficacy with the conventional addition of free CIN to the culture medium. The results indicated that conveyed CIN increased the antifungal effects of the product, particularly towards C. albicans R. TRPA1-related drugs alter sensation, particularly in conditions of inflammation. To further characterize the role of these drugs in bladder sensation, the TRPA1 agonist cinnamaldehyde (CMA) and oral true cinnamon spice were examined in preclinical models of bladder pain. Female adult rats, with and without acute zymosan-induced cystitis, were anesthetized and visceromotor (VMR) and cystometric responses to urinary bladder distension (UBD) were determined following either the intravesical administration of CMA/vehicle solutions or the oral administration of true cinnamon/vehicle. ELISA measures of bladder TRPA1 content were also determined. Acute cystitis resulted in increases in bladder TRPA1 content and produced an increased vigor of the VMRs to UBD and a lowering of micturition volume thresholds for activation of a micturition response. Intravesical CMA produced a robust inhibition of VMRs to UBD in rats with cystitis but not in those without. Micturition volume thresholds were lowered by CMA in rats without cystitis but had no additional effect in rats with cystitis. Oral cinnamon also produced a robust inhibition of VMRs to UBD in rats with cystitis and a mild augmentation of VMRs to UBD in rats without cystitis. A potentially analgesic effect of the spice, true cinnamon, in the treatment of the pain of acute cystitis was suggested by these preclinical studies. Human studies are indicated.

Background: This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of cinnamaldehyde in atopic dermatitis (AD) in the mouse model. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four mice were divided into four groups: Group A (control), group B [AD with no treatment (AD + NoTre)], group C [AD with corticosteroids (AD + Cort)] and group D [AD with cinnamaldehyde (AD + Cin)]. 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene was used to form the AD model. Topical corticosteroid was applied to group C, and oral cinnamaldehyde was administered to group D. Dorsal skin biopsies were evaluated immunohistochemically with interleukin (IL)-25, IL-33, thymic stromal lymphopoietin and caspase-3. Results: Epithelial thicknesses were significantly higher in group B–D mice compared to group A (P = 0.002, 0.009, 0.004, respectively). Significantly, higher staining with IL-25 was observed in group B (AD + NoTre) and group D (AD + Cin) than in group A (control) (P = 0.003, 0.002, respectively). However, no significant difference was observed between group D (AD + Cin) and group B (AD + NoTre). All three groups (B–D) had significantly higher staining in terms of diffuseness of IL-33 compared to group A (control) (P = 0.002, 0.002, 0.002, respectively). Caspase-3 staining was significantly lower in group D (AD + Cin) than in group B (AD + NoTre) (P = 0.003, 0.002, respectively). Moreover, caspase-3 staining intensity was significantly lower in group D (AD + Cin) than in group C (AD + Cort) (P = 0.002). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that IL-33, IL-25 and caspase-3 have a role in the pathogenesis of AD. Furthermore, cinnamaldehyde reduced caspase-3 activity more than topical corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory effects might be investigated in AD therapy with future studies.

Garlic oil (GO) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN) have shown potential to modify rumen fermentation. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of GO and CIN on rumen fermentation, microbial protein synthesis (MPS), and microbial populations in Rusitec fermenters fed a mixed diet (50:50 forage/concentrate), as well as whether these effects were maintained over time. Six fermenters were used in two 15-day incubation runs. Within each run, two fermenters received no additive, 180 mg/L of GO, or 180 mg/L of CIN. Rumen fermentation parameters were assessed in two periods (P1 and P2), and microbial populations were studied after each of these periods. Garlic oil reduced the acetate/propionate ratio and methane production (p < 0.001) in P1 and P2 and decreased protozoal DNA concentration and the relative abundance of fungi and archaea after P1 (p < 0.05). Cinnamaldehyde increased bacterial diversity (p < 0.01) and modified the structure of bacterial communities after P1, decreased bacterial DNA concentration after P2 (p < 0.05), and increased MPS (p < 0.001). The results of this study indicate that 180 mg/L of GO and CIN promoted a more efficient rumen fermentation and increased the protein supply to the animal, respectively, although an apparent adaptive response of microbial populations to GO was observed.

Globally, breast cancer is not only the most frequently diagnosed cancer but also the leading cause of cancer death in women. Depending on breast cancer histotype, conventional breast cancer treatment options vary greatly in efficacy and accompanying side effects. Thus, there is a need for more effective and safer strategies that impact breast cancer at all stages. Plant-based natural products are easily available, with them proving effective and inexpensive. Two such phytochemicals are chlorogenic acid and cinnamaldehyde. Studies have shown their efficacy against different molecular subtypes of breast cancers in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we discuss their current status in anticancer research with specific emphasis on chlorogenic acid and cinnamaldehyde. We describe their multiple mechanisms of action in destroying breast cancer cells, their potential uses, and the need for translational applications. We also include future directions for investigations to progress chlorogenic acid and cinnamaldehyde research from bench to bedside.

To counter the harmful impacts of agricultural chemicals on the environment and human health, there is an increasing demand for safe, eco-friendly, and potent plant-based biopesticides. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of ginger essential oil and selected volatile compounds (linalool, eugenol, citral, and cinnamaldehyde [CA]) against Fusarium oxysporum FOX-1. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using the mycelium growth inhibition method. The compound CA exhibited the most potent antifungal effect against F. oxysporum FOX-1 and was selected for further investigation. After treatment with CA at 1/2 MIC or MIC, the spore germination of F. oxysporum FOX-1 was significantly inhibited at 12 h. Furthermore, microscopic observation revealed that CA treatment resulted in the morphological degradation of F. oxysporum FOX-1. CA destroyed the cell membrane integrity of F. oxysporum FOX-1, increasing the relative conductivity and the leakage of intracellular protein, nucleic acids, and malondialdehyde, affecting the integrity and metabolism of the cell membrane. The effects were positively related to CA concentration. Additionally, in vivo experiments with rhizome sections showed that CA significantly reduced the pathogenicity of F. oxysporum FOX-1. Overall, these findings provide evidence for the potential of using ginger essential oil components as fungicides, offering a basis for future research to develop robust and eco-friendly plant-derived fungicides that serve as a sustainable means to reduce fungus-driven agricultural losses.

As a natural aldehyde organic compound, cinnamaldehyde (CA) is one of the main components of cinnamon essential oil with multiple bioactivities. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of CA on zearalenone (ZEA)-induced apoptosis, barrier dysfunction and mucin reduction, as well as underlying mechanisms in LS174T cells. In the present study, cells pre-treated with or without CA for 24 h were left untreated or subjected to ZEA for indicated time points Our results showed that 10 μM CA significantly prevented ZEA-induced cell viability decline, reversed ZEA-induced increase of the LDH level, cell cycle disruption and apoptosis in LS174T cells. Periodic acid-schiff (PAS) staining analysis showed that CA significantly alleviated the reduction of mucin secretion in LS174T cells caused by ZEA exposure. Western blot analysis showed that CA significantly reversed ZEA-induced reduction of the expression of mucin 2 (MUC2) and tight junction (TJ) proteins (claudin-1, claudin-3, ZO-1 and ZO-2) in LS174T cells. Notably, CA can significantly reduce the upregulation of the main effector of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways in LS174T cells. Further study showed that CA protects cells against ZEA-induced cellular damage through JNK/NF-κB signaling pathway in LS174T cells. Supplementation with CA might be an potential strategy to alleviate the damaging effect of ZEA on epithelial cells.

With the growing shortage of organs, improvements in donor organ protection are needed to meet the increasing demands for transplantation. Here, the aim was to investigate the protective effect of cinnamaldehyde against ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI) in donor hearts exposed to prolonged cold ischemia. Donor hearts were harvested from rats pretreated with or without cinnamaldehyde, then subjected to 24 h of cold preservation and 1 h of ex vivo perfusion. Hemodynamic changes, myocardial inflammation, oxidative stress, and myocardial apoptosis were evaluated. The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway involved in the cardioprotective effects of cinnamaldehyde was explored through RNA sequencing and western blot analysis. Intriguingly, cinnamaldehyde pretreatment remarkably improved cardiac function through increasing coronary flow, left ventricular systolic pressure, +dp/dtmax, and −dp/dtmax, decreasing coronary vascular resistance and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. Moreover, our findings indicated that cinnamaldehyde pretreatment protected the heart from IRI by alleviating myocardial inflammation, attenuating oxidative stress, and reducing myocardial apoptosis. Further studies showed that the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway was activated after cinnamaldehyde treatment during IRI. The protective effects of cinnamaldehyde were abolished by LY294002. In conclusion, cinnamaldehyde pretreatment alleviated IRI in donor hearts suffering from prolonged cold ischemia. Cinnamaldehyde exerted cardioprotective effects through the activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

ABSTRACT: A total of 480 one-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates of 20 chicks per replicate. A basal diet was administered to the control group (CON), whereas CML350, CML500, and CML1000 groups were fed with basal diet supplemented with 350, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex, respectively. However, adding 500 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex improved weight gain (P < 0.01), enhanced intestinal morphology, increased serum total protein and albumin content, and total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.01), and significantly increased the Chao1 and Ace indices (P < 0.01), indicating an increase in the richness of the gut microbiota. At the phylum level, CML500 group reduced the abundance of Fusobacteriota at 21 d and Proteobacteria at 42 d (P < 0.01). At the genus level, CML500 group increased the abundance of Faecalibacterium and Alistipes at 42 d (P < 0.01) and decreased the abundance of Escherichia–Shigella (P < 0.01). At the species level, CML500 group reduced the abundance of Escherichia coli at 42 d (P < 0.01) and increased the abundance of Alistipes_sp_CHKCI003 at 42 d (P < 0.01). According to these results, adding 500 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex in feed can improve the growth performance, intestinal morphology, and gut microbiota of yellow-feathered broilers.

Pt/Co0.5Fe0.5Al2O4 catalysts with the average Pt particle size of 1.6–3.4 nm were prepared and applied to the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). Not only the TOF was promoted from 0.19 to 2.70 s−1, but also the selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) was improved from 68% to 94%, with the increase of Pt particle size. Stronger interaction occurred between Co0.5Fe0.5Al2O4 and smaller-sized Pt particles, resulting in electron-deficient Pt particles, so that CO and CC bond could be activated simultaneously. However, electron-rich Pt species existed on Pt/Co0.5Fe0.5Al2O4 with larger Pt size, which is beneficial for the preferential activation of CO bond.

A highly sensitive analytical method has been developed for trace level quantification of formaldehyde in active pharmaceutical ingredient. Formaldehyde is a highly toxic impurity. Determination of formaldehyde by using UV-visible spectroscopy is difficult due to interference of unreacted derivatizing agent; hence, either HPLC-UV or GC-MS are used for the quantification. However, we have developed an indirect method for the quantification of formaldehyde. In this method, in the first step, formaldehyde reacted with excess of 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (2,4-DNPH). In the second step, the quantification of unreacted 2,4-DNPH was done by detecting its derivative with its scavenger—cinnamaldehyde on a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The developed method is rapid, simple, sensitive and accurate for the quantification of formaldehyde. Linearity of the method was observed in the range of 0.5–3 μg/mL with determination coefficients (r2) > 0.999. The limit of detection and limit of quantification are 0.25 and 0.5 μg/mL, respectively. In recent years, infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have greatly threatened human health and imposed a burden on global public health. To overcome this crisis, there is an urgent need to seek effective alternatives to single antibiotic therapy to circumvent drug resistance and prevent MDR bacteria. According to previous reports, cinnamaldehyde exerts antibacterial activity against drug-resistant Salmonella spp. This study was conducted to investigate whether cinnamaldehyde has a synergistic effect on antibiotics when used in combination, we found that cinnamaldehyde enhanced the antibacterial activity of ceftriaxone sodium against MDR Salmonella in vitro by significantly reduced the expression of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, inhibiting the development of drug resistance under ceftriaxone selective pressure in vitro, damaging the cell membrane, and affecting its basic metabolism. In addition, it restored the activity of ceftriaxone sodium against MDR Salmonella in vivo and inhibited peritonitis caused by ceftriaxone resistant strain of Salmonella in mice. Collectively, these results revealed that cinnamaldehyde can be used as a novel ceftriaxone adjuvant to prevent and treat infections caused by MDR Salmonella, mitigating the possibility of producing further mutant strains. Cinnamaldehyde is an essential oil extracted from the leaves, bark, roots and flowers of cinnamon plants (genus Cinnamomum). Cinnamaldehyde has shown biological functions such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and anti-cancer. However, poor solubility in water as well as molecular sensitivity to oxygen, light, and high temperature limit the direct application of cinnamaldehyde. Researchers are using different encapsulation techniques to maximize the potential biological functions of cinnamaldehyde. Different delivery systems such as liposomes, emulsions, biopolymer nanoparticles, complex coacervation, molecular inclusion, and spray drying have been developed for this purpose. The particle size and morphology, composition and physicochemical properties influence the performance of each delivery system. Consequently, the individual delivery system has its advantages and limitations for specific applications. Given the essential role of cinnamaldehyde in functional food and food preservation, appropriate approaches should be applied in the encapsulation and application of encapsulated cinnamaldehyde. This review systematically analyzes available encapsulation techniques for cinnamaldehyde in terms of their design, properties, advantages and limitations, and food application status. In order to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde(CA)on salt tolerance of tomato seedlings, we used tomato ‘Cooperative 903' as experimental material, and investigated the characteristics of germination and seedling growth of tomato under NaCl(100 mmol·L-1)stress compared with the treatment of adding CA(100 μg·L-1). We set up four groups of treatments in the experiment: Control(CK, distilled water), NaCl(100 mmol·L-1), NaCl+CA(100 mmol·L-1 NaCl + 100 μg·L-1 CA), and CA(100 μg·L-1). The results were as follows:(1)With the application of CA, the germination potential and the germination rate of tomato seeds were both improved. The root length and fresh weight of tomato seedlings were also significantly increased under NaCl(100 mmol·L-1)stress.(2)CA could effectively alleviate the excessive accumulation, oxidative damage and cell death of total ROS caused by salt stress in roots of tomato seedlings. To sum up, CA can improve the salt tolerance of tomato during germination and seedling stage by alleviating the degree of oxidative damage of seedlings, and CA has the potential in field production as a new preparation. Nanocellulose-based composite sponge perfused with bioactive Cinnamomum cassia has been designed to serve as hemostatic wound dressing material. The composite sponge was prepared by freeze-drying aqueous suspension of in situ fibrillated microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs) in cinnamon extract (ciE). The incorporation of cCNCs in MFC matrix resulted in mechanically robust and flexible sponges that exhibited a microporous structure (porosity ~ 75%). The sponges were structurally stable in moist environments with a high swelling ratio (~ 1435%, 24 h measurement) and moderate enzymatic degradation (~ 25%, 4 weeks study). The ciE-perfused sponges showed antibacterial activity against both S. aureus (gram-positive) and E. coli (gram-negative). The non-cytotoxic nature of the sponges was affirmed through in vitro cytotoxicity test performed using various normal cell lines with CCK-8 assay. The in vitro hemolysis ratio below 5% revealed the non-hemolytic nature of sponges. Furthermore, no signs of skin erythema or edema on the skin of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats was observed during in vivo dermal irritation and corrosion test. Excellent hemostatic efficiency of the sponges was verified both in vitro (blood clotting index ~ 40%) and in vivo. The in vivo hemostatic performance study done on male Bagg albino (BALB/c) mouse using a liver injury model indicated the excellent capability of the sample to arrest bleeding in less than a minute (~ 45 s) with around 50% reduced blood loss as compared to conventional medical gauge. On the anvil of the world of catalysis, the role of nanoparticles (NPs) as well as graphene oxide (GO) are well acknowledged as a new marvel experienced in various fields specially catalyzing the organic reactions. Herein, we report the use of biogenically synthesized Cu2O NPs decorated on reduced graphene oxide (Cu2O/RGO) nanocomposites (NCs) as a selective hydrogenation catalyst to efficiently transform E-cinnamaldehyde to E-cinnamyl alcohol. The transformation of cinnamaldehyde with 10 mg of Cu2O/RGO nanocatalyst and NaBH4 was achieved in 5 min in water at room temperature in excellent yield (~ 95%). The detailed mechanism of the formation of cinnamyl alcohol was also discussed. Cu2O/RGO NCs were synthesized utilizing an agricultural waste i.e., beetroot peel extract (BRPE) where NCs were stabilized by BRPE on the surface of reduced GO, and simultaneously the conjugation between the GO and copper ions is also responsible for the stabilization of Cu2O NPs. Incorporating the agricultural waste for the synthesis of Cu2O/RGO NCs validates an economic, efficient and ecofriendly approach. Novel nanoscale materials Cu2O/RGO are capable of offering several opportunities as heterogeneous catalysts thereby arousing wider interest and enthusiasm of scientists for exploring more reactions for their efficient catalytic performances in future. Polymer materials have been widely studied due to their large potential of application in technological fields because of their excellent and diverse properties. Morphological and rearrangement state of synthesized polymers has significant effect on their physicochemical properties and influence the performance of these materials in thin films structures. It is of both fundamental and practical importance to understand the effect of synthesis parameters and changing such parameters on optical, electronic, electrical and morphological properties of polymer surfaces and thin films for the development of new functional polymers and their applications. In this article, the fundamentals of optical, charge career and morphological mechanics are presented for quantifying the use of synthesis parameters for thin films physicochemical properties tuning. Pyrrole with 2-nitrocinnamaldehyde based copolymers have been synthetized by varying synthesis parameters such solvent, reaction time and temperature which proved a relevant effect on the morphological and optoelectronic properties of the relative final deposited thin films. The study proved that the best opto-electric properties are obtained by using either acetone with a long reaction time or chloroform with a short reaction time and room conditions for the pressure and reaction temperature. The optimized PPNC thin films showed a narrow absorbance covering the entire visible optical spectrum and a considerable conductivity of 10.3 104 S/cm ensured by a charge mobility of 677.1 cm2/Vs. The electrochemical study proved that the electronic energy level could be optimized from the synthesis parameters as well as the gap varying around 3.0 eV depending on the optimal conditions. Cinnamon is a natural spice with a wide range of pharmacological functions, including anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-tumor activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde-rich cinnamon extract (CRCE) on the colorectal cancer cell lines HCT 116 and HT-29. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of a lipophilic extract of cinnamon revealed the dominance of trans-cinnamaldehyde. Cells treated with CRCE (10–60 µg/mL) showed significantly decreased cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner. We also observed that cell proliferation and migration capacity were inhibited in CRCE-treated cells. In addition, a remarkable increase in the number of sub-G1-phase cells was observed with arrest at the G2 phase by CRCE treatment. CRCE also induced mitochondrial stress, and finally, CRCE treatment resulted in activation of apoptotic proteins Caspase-3, -9, and PARP and decreased levels of mu-2-related death-inducing gene protein expression with BH3-interacting domain death agonist (BID) activation. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a major aggressive primary brain tumor with dismal survival outcome and few therapeutic options. Although Temozolomide (TMZ) is a part of the standard therapy, over time, it can cause DNA damage leading to deleterious effects, necessitating the discovery of drugs with minimal side effects. To this end, we investigated the effect of cinnamaldehyde (CA), a highly purified, single ingredient from cinnamon, on the GBM cell lines U87 and U251 and the neuroglioma cell line H4. On observing similar impact on the viability in all the three cell lines, detailed studies were conducted with CA and its isomer/analog, trans-CA (TCA), and methoxy-CA (MCA) on U87 cells. The compounds exhibited equal potency when assessed at the cellular level in inhibiting U87 cells as well as at the molecular level, resulting in an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an increase in the apoptotic and multicaspase cell populations. To further characterize the key entities, protein profiling was performed with CA. The studies revealed differential regulation of entities that could be key to glioblastoma cell circuits such as downregulation of pyruvate kinase-PKM2, the key enzyme of the glycolytic pathway that is central to the Warburg effect. This allows for monitoring the levels of PKM2 after therapy using recently developed noninvasive technology employing PET [18F] DASA-23. Additionally, the observation of downregulation of phosphomevalonate kinase is significant as the brain tumor initiating cells (BTIC) are maintained by the metabolism occurring via the mevalonate pathway. Nowadays, there is growing interest in using medicinal plants as antimicrobial agents to treat microbial infections in the oral cavity. This study was aimed to evaluate phytochemical properties, antioral cancer and antimicrobial activity against C. albicans and some potential oral lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum). Plant extracts including Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon), Acorus calamus (sweet flag), Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle), Zingiber officinale (ginger) and Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal) were tested and used to formulate mouthrinses for oral health care. Cinnamon extract possessed the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin content, and antioxidant activity (1,152.58 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g by phosphomolybdenum assay and 39.64 % nitric oxide radical scavenging activity), while roselle extract had the highest total alkaloids. Only lesser galangal extract displayed anti-oral cancer activity with 97.83 % cytotoxicity. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed the presence of galangin and kaempferide in the lesser galangal rhizome extract. The cinnamon extract showed the strongest inhibitory activity against Candida albicans (4 mg/mL MIC). Cinnamon extract (24 mg/mL) and cinnamaldehyde (0.08 mol/L) exhibited the best killing effect and the highest cellular protein leakage in C. albicans. In addition, these plant extracts were used to develop mouthrinse formulations. The extracts of cinnamon and ginger at 10 % in mouthrinse formulations could strongly inhibit the growth of C. albicans. In comparison, 8 and 10 % roselle extracts showed the best inhibitory effect against Lactobacillus casei. In summary, cinnamon and lesser galangal were potential plants with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-biofilm and anti-oral cancer activities, and thus can be utilized to formulate oral care products. Allylic alcohols typically produced through selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes are important intermediates in fine chemical industry, but it is still a challenge to achieve its high selectivity transformation. Herein, we report a series of TiO2-supported CoRe bimetallic catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen donor. The resultant catalyst with the optimized Co/Re ratio of 1:1 can achieve an exceptional COL selectivity of 89% with a CAL conversion of 99% under mild conditions of 140 °C for 4 h, and the catalyst can be reused four times without loss of activity. Meanwhile, the Co1Re1/TiO2/FA system was efficient for the selective hydrogenation of various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols. The presence of ReOx on the Co1Re1/TiO2 catalyst surface was advantageous to the adsorption of C=O, and the ultrafine Co nanoparticles provided abundant hydrogenation active sites for the selective hydrogenation. An 8-week study was carried out to examine the influence of dietary Biotronic Top3 (BTT3), which is a blend of short-chain fatty acids (formate, propionate, and acetate), a phytogenic agent (cinnamaldehyde), and a permeabilizer complex (Biomin), in whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) juveniles. Five isonitrogenous (∼38%) diets were formulated and supplemented with BTT3 at 0 (control), 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, or 1.2 g/kg. Shrimps (2.7 g) were allocated into 15 circular fiberglass tanks filled with 150 L seawater (20 shrimp per tank) and each dietary treatment was in triplicate. Shrimps were handfed thrice a day at the rate of 7% of their initial biomass for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, hemolymph and hepatopancreas (HP) were sampled to evaluate plasma biochemical factors, immune-related genes, and digestive enzymes, respectively. The growth rate in shrimps fed with a 0.3 g BTT3/kg diet was markedly higher (∼1.6 g) than in the control (P < 0.05), but higher dietary BTT3 levels did not improve growth and feed utilization. Protein deposition in the whole body of shrimps fed with 0.3 or 0.6 g BTT3/kg diets was significantly increased (∼1.5%) compared to the control. Total alkaline proteases activity in BTT3 groups was significantly higher than in the control. The activity of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase, was increased in HP of shrimps fed BTT3-supplemented diets; meanwhile, malondialdehyde level was significantly reduced by increasing dietary BTT3 level. Shrimps fed diets supplemented with 1.2 g BTT3/kg, and the control had the highest and lowest plasma phenoloxidase activity, respectively. The plasma alkaline phosphatase content in BTT3 groups was higher than in the control. The highest relative abundance of prophenoloxidase gene mRNA transcript was in HP of shrimps fed a 1.2-g BTT3/kg diet. The relative abundance of lysozyme and penaeidin-3α genes mRNA transcript in HP of shrimps fed 0.9 and 1.2 g BTT3/kg diets was higher than in the other groups. Based on the abovementioned findings, the inclusion of aquafeeds with 0.3 g BTT3/kg can increase growth performance in P. vannamei juvenile by promoting the antioxidant capacity and immune responses. Background and purpose: Metabolic syndrome refers to a set of diseases including insulin resistance, high blood glucose levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and dyslipidemia. The cinnamon plant is a member of the Lauraceae family and is considered a universal medicinal plant. Traditional medicine studies reported the therapeutic effects of this plant in the reduction of blood glucose levels, blood pressure, obesity, and improving dyslipidemia. The present study aimed to review the effect of cinnamon and its active compounds on metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: The search was carried out in Science Direct, Google Scholar, Pub Med, Scopus, and SID using the following keywords: cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and blood lipid profiles. Relevant articles published in May 2007 to September 2022 were selected. Results: Data obtained from different studies (clinical studies, in vivo) on the effects of cinnamon and its active ingredients showed the protective effects of this plant in metabolic syndrome in different ways. Cinnamaldehyde is the prevalent bioactive part of cinnamon essential oil which is liable for its regular scent and can be gotten from the bark, leaves, and twigs of various Cinnamomum species. Cinnamaldehyde is known to be generally considered non-toxic due to its high tolerance in animals and humans. Various extraction methods have been used for extracting cinnamaldehyde and different phytochemicals from plants. The methods generally adopted for cinnamaldehyde extraction are hydro distillation, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted hydro distillation, and water steam extraction. Cinnamaldehyde has been documented to have different useful properties against disease conditions as a result of oxidative stress, inflammation, loss of neurons, hyperglycemia, and malignant growth. Likewise, cinnamaldehyde has been recorded to possess strong antimicrobial activity against a wide range of pathogenic and food waste microorganisms. The mechanism through which cinnamaldehyde exerts these effects have been associated with the prevention of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species generation, free radical scavenging activity, inhibiting inflammatory cytokines, and disruption of the cell membrane of microorganisms. This article gives a thorough report of the sources, extraction techniques, validated therapeutic potentials and mechanisms of cinnamaldehyde. It likewise features other applications of cinnamaldehyde in agriculture, food, and other industries.

Cinnamaldehyde has an effective antimicrobial activity and therefore it received interest as a feed additive in swine nutrition. However, its high reactivity to amino acid residues might affect its efficacy and digestive processes. As an alternative, 20 chemical derivatives were evaluated. The in vitro antimicrobial activities were tested in an in vitro fermentation model. Thereof three compounds were selected and fed to newly weaned piglets. Five dietary treatments were replicated in six pens of four pigs per pen; i.e. control, cinnamaldehyde at 100 and 400 mg/kg, and 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde and 4-methoxycinnamaldehyde, both equimolar to 400 mg/kg cinnamaldehyde. In vitro results showed that 4-nitrocinnamaldehyde has the highest antimicrobial activity; however, this compound is carcinogenic and was not further issued. Cinnamaldehyde had the second-highest activity, particularly against coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E. coli), followed by 4-methoxycinnamaldehyde, 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde and hydrocinnamaldehyde. All other derivatives showed lower potency, but they were consistently more bactericidal against coliform bacteria and E. coli as compared to Gram-positive bacteria. At pH 7, aldehydes showed stronger bactericidal activity than their corresponding carboxylic acids, which was not the case at pH 5, suggesting a different mode of action. In the in vivo trial, no significant improvements in animal performance or antimicrobial effects were observed. To conclude, apart from 4-nitrocinnamaldehyde, none of the derivatives showed higher antimicrobial potency than cinnamaldehyde. Three selected compounds from in vitro trials failed to demonstrate major positive outcomes in the in vivo trial.Highlights 4-Nitrocinnamaldehyde has the highest antimicrobial activity in vitro. Background To prove the internal connection, we deciphered the effect of cinnamaldehyde on kidney senescence through establishing animal and cell models.Methods In vivo, a rat senescence model was constructed using D-galactose (D-gal), and the modeled rats were further treated with cinnamaldehyde. In vitro, rat renal tubular epithelial cells (NRK-52E) were transfected with miR-155 mimic or inhibitor and then treated with cinnamaldehyde, D-gal or PI3K inhibitor (LY294002). The serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr) of the rats were measured by an automatic biochemical analyzer. Pathological changes of kidney were determined by hematoxylin-eosin staining. The senescence and viability of NRK-52E cells were assessed by SA-β-gal staining and CCK-8 assay, respectively. The levels of miR-155, p-PI3K/PI3K, p-Akt/Akt, LC3B (LC3-II and LC3-I) and Beclin1 were detected by qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, or western blot.Results D-gal elevated the levels of BUN, Scr and miR-155 in the kidney, induced the renal pathological damage, inhibited the cell viability, increased the numbers of SA-β-gal-, LC3B- and Beclin1-positive cells and upregulated the levels of LC3-II/LC3-I and Beclin1 both in the kidney and cells. Cinnamaldehyde reversed D-gal-induced effects on the kidney and cells, and moreover, the cinnamaldehyde-induced anti-D-gal effects on cells could be suppressed by miR-155 mimic but promoted by miR-155 inhibitor. LY294002 potentiated D-gal-induced effects, and reversed cinnamaldehyde- and miR-155 inhibitor-caused impacts on the PI3K/Akt pathway and LC3-II/LC3-I level in D-gal-induced cells.Conclusion Cinnamaldehyde attenuates kidney senescence and injury through PI3K/Akt pathway-mediated autophagy via downregulating miR-155.

Objective: Cinnamaldehyde was encapsulated in the liposome. Methods: Cinnamaldehyde was selected as the research object and the cinnamaldehyde liposomes were prepared by ethanol injection method. The effects of phospholipid concentration, ratio of phospholipid to cholesterol, ratio of phospholipid to cinnamaldehyde and injection velocity on the encapsulation efficiency, particle size and polydispersity index （PDI） of cinnamaldehyde liposomes were investigated, and the process was optimized by response surface method with the encapsulation efficiency as the index. Results: The optimum preparation conditions of cinnamaldehyde liposomes were as follows: the phospholipid concentration was 2.69 mg/mL, the ratio of phospholipid to cinnamaldehyde was 6.73, and the ratio of phospholipid to cholesterol was 5.79. Under the control of these conditions, the encapsulation efficiency of cinnamaldehyde liposome was 82.37%, and the particle size and zeta potential were 113.89 nm, and -29.07 mV, respectively. After 4 weeks of storage at 4 ℃, it still has a high encapsulation efficiency and good stability. Conclusion: Cinnamaldehyde liposomes with small particle size, high encapsulation efficiency and stable properties could be prepared by ethanol injection method.

Plasmodium falciparum malaria contributes to significant global diseases. Computer-aided drug design, screening, and discovery were used to analyze a novel series of Methyl Eugenol Benzaldehyde Thiosemicarbazone (MEBThi) and Methyl Eugenol Cinnamaldehyde Thiosemicarbazone (MECThi) derivatives for malaria falciparum inhibition. This present study showed that 16 molecules from 28 of MEBThi and MECThi have affinities and interaction with active-site residues of cysteine protease, a key player in erythrocyte proliferation P. falciparum. 13-MECThi demonstrates the best binding affinity at ˗8.0 kcal/mol while co-drug ˗5.6 kcal/mol. Physicochemical and pharmacokinetic assays of 13-MECThi have also revealed this potent compound. Toxicity analysis shows that 13-MECThi does not have mutagenicity and carcinogenicity characters, whereas co-drug has mutagenicity probability. The molecular dynamic evaluation illustrated that the 13-MECThi complex has higher Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) values that indicate its structure is more flexible than the chloroquine complex. Root Mean Square Fluctuation (RMSF) complex of receptor and 13-MECThi has no fundamental differences with chloroquine complex. These compounds that have been designed should be considered as falciparum antimalarial drugs.

The experiment was to optimize preparation technology and evaluate the quality of compound cinnamaldehyde microcapsules. Compound cinnamaldehyde microcapsules were prepared by monocoagulation method, of which ethylcellulose was wall material. The effect of core to wall ratio, water content and stirring speed on formation of microcapsules were discussed by single factor test. Taking the embedding rate and microcapsule yield as key technical indicators, the optimal process parameters were selected through orthogonal test, and the results of orthogonal test were verified. The results showed that the optimal process was core to wall ratio of 4∶5, water addition was 25 mL of distilled water per gram of ethyl cellulose, and stirring speed of 800 r/min. The optimal embedding rate was 30.73%, and the corresponding yield was 69.03%. The results of microscopic observation showed the formation of new phase, indicating that the microcapsule was successfully prepared. The dissolution test results showed that when the drug in solution did not reach a certain mass concentration, the microcapsule would release rapidly, and when the drug in solution reached a certain concentration, the drug release rate would slow down and gradually become stable. The experiment indicates that the optimal preparation process of compound cinnamaldehyde microcapsule is screened through special coating treatment technology of compound cinnamaldehyde microcapsule, which can provide a reference for further research of plant essential oil products. Cinnamaldehyde, a natural product that can be extracted from a variety of plants of the genus Cinnamomum, exhibits excellent biological activities including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. To overcome the disadvantages (e.g., poor water solubility and sensitivity to light) or enhance the advantages (e.g., high reactivity and promoting cellular reactive oxygen species production) of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde can be loaded into or conjugated with polymers for sustained or controlled release, thereby prolonging the effective action time of its biological activities. Moreover, when cinnamaldehyde is conjugated with a polymer, it can also introduce environmental responsiveness to the polymer through the form of stimuli-sensitive linkages between its aldehyde group and various functional groups of polymers. The environmental responsiveness provides the great potential of cinnamaldehyde-conjugated polymers for applications in the biomedical field. Antibiotics were the main fishery drugs for treating Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) infection, which would generate selective pressure and result in the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The bacterial quorum sensing (QS) system provides a new alternative strategy against A. hydrophila infection. QS inhibitors can reduce bacterial virulence behaviors by disrupting QS, which has no effect on bacterial growth. Therefore, we studied the effect of cinnamaldehyde from a natural plant extract on the QS of A. hydrophila aiming to reduce its pathogenicity. The efficacy of cinnamaldehyde against A. hydrophila was evaluated from various aspects, including the effects on aerolysin, lipase, protease, swarming motility, biofilm formation, acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), and QS-related genes. Moreover, the therapeutic effect of cinnamaldehyde in vitro and in vivo was studied. The results showed that cinnamaldehyde could decrease the virulence phenotypes of A. hydrophila regulated by QS. Moreover, the transcriptions of related genes (aerA, ahyR, and ahyI) were downregulated following the addition of cinnamaldehyde. The in vitro and in vivo therapeutic assays show that cinnamaldehyde could reduce the aerolysin-mediated A549 cell injury and increase the survival rate of crucian carp infected with A. hydrophila. Cinnamon is one of the most commonly used spices worldwide. In some Arab countries, cinnamon is used with other ingredients to relieve bronchospasm and treatment of airways-related disorders. In the current study, GC, GC-MS and tracheal relaxant effect comparison were performed using the three available types in Saudi Arabia, Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon), C. cassia (Chinese cinnamon) and C. loureiroi (Vietnamese cinnamon). The essential oil of C. verum was the most potent in the relaxation of guinea pig isolated tracheal muscles against carbachol (CCh, 1 uM)-evoked bronchospasm at the concentration range from 0.03 to 3 mg/mL followed by C. bureiroi at 0.03 to 5 mg/mL; whereas, C. cassia was the least potent oil. Cinnamaldehyde (1), isolated as the main component of the three oils induced complete relaxation of low K+ (25 mM)-evoked contractions, with mild effect on the contractions evoked by high K+ (80 mM). Pre-incubation of the tracheal tissues with glibenclamide (10 μM) significantly opposed the relaxation of low K+ by cinnamaldehyde. The standard drug, cromakalim also inserted glibenclamide-sensitive inhibition of low K+ without relaxing high K+. These results indicate that cinnamaldehyde acts predominantly by ATP-specific K+ channel opening followed by weak Ca++ antagonistic effects. Cinnamaldehyde (CAD) derived from cinnamon bark has received much attention for its potential as a nematicide and food additive. Previously, we have succeeded in developing an Escherichia coli strain (YHP05) capable of synthesizing cinnamaldehyde; however, the production titer (75 mg/L) was not sufficient for commercialization. Herein, to develop an economical and sustainable production bioprocess, we further engineered the YHP05 strain for non-auxotrophic, antibiotic-free, inducer-free hyperproduction of CAD using systematic metabolic engineering. First, the conversion of trans -cinnamic acid (t -CA) to CAD was improved by the co-expression of carboxylic acid reductase and phosphopantetheinyl transferase (PPTase) genes. Second, to prevent the spontaneous conversion of CAD to cinnamyl alcohol, 10 endogenous reductase and dehydrogenase genes were deleted. Third, all expression cassettes were integrated into the chromosomal DNA using an auto-inducible system for antibiotic- and inducer-free production. Subsequently, to facilitate CAD production, available pools of cofactors (NADPH, CoA, and ATP) were increased, and acetate pathways were deleted. With the final antibiotic-, plasmid-, and inducer-free strain (H-11MPmR), fed-batch cultivations combined with in situ product recovery (ISPR) were performed, and the production titer of CAD as high as 3.8 g/L could be achieved with 49.1 mg/L/h productivity, which is the highest CAD titer ever reported. • E. coli was engineered for the gram-scale production of cinnamaldehyde (3.8 g/L). • Production was achieved with a plasmid-, antibiotic- and inducer-free cell system. • Auto-inducible system for strong expression at stationary phase was developed. • Regeneration of co-factors (CoA, ATP and NADPH) could increase the production titer. • Cultivation with in situ product recovery could increase cell viability and production. Background: This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of cinnamaldehyde in atopic dermatitis (AD) in the mouse model. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four mice were divided into four groups: Group A (control), group B [AD with no treatment (AD + NoTre)], group C [AD with corticosteroids (AD + Cort)] and group D [AD with cinnamaldehyde (AD + Cin)]. 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene was used to form the AD model. Topical corticosteroid was applied to group C, and oral cinnamaldehyde was administered to group D. Dorsal skin biopsies were evaluated immunohistochemically with interleukin (IL)-25, IL-33, thymic stromal lymphopoietin and caspase-3. Results: Epithelial thicknesses were significantly higher in group B--D mice compared to group A (P = 0.002, 0.009, 0.004, respectively). Significantly, higher staining with IL-25 was observed in group B (AD + NoTre) and group D (AD + Cin) than in group A (control) (P = 0.003, 0.002, respectively). However, no significant difference was observed between group D (AD + Cin) and group B (AD + NoTre). All three groups (B--D) had significantly higher staining in terms of diffuseness of IL-33 compared to group A (control) (P = 0.002, 0.002, 0.002, respectively). Caspase-3 staining was significantly lower in group D (AD + Cin) than in group B (AD + NoTre) (P = 0.003, 0.002, respectively). Moreover, caspase-3 staining intensity was significantly lower in group D (AD + Cin) than in group C (AD + Cort) (P = 0.002). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that IL-33, IL-25 and caspase-3 have a role in the pathogenesis of AD. Background and Aim: The increasing demand for the discovery of next-generation antimicrobials necessitates the use of plant extracts as alternatives. This study investigates the antibacterial efficacy of extracted cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and commercial cinnamaldehyde (CN) against foodborne pathogens. Materials and Methods: Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was used to screen the antimicrobial potency of CEO and CN. MIC and MBC were determined by the broth microdilution method. Kinetic destruction pattern was studied by time killing assay. CEO and CN mediated inactivation dynamics of S. typhimurium (ALM40) and L. monocytogenes were studied on the ground chicken meat model. Results: Both CEO and CN showed remarkable antimicrobial efficacy against the test strains, with highest and lowest efficacy against V. metschnikovii and E. coli, respectively. The agents inhibited gram-positive and negative bacteria equally. CN showed higher efficacy than CEO although the results were very close. MIC of CEO and CN ranged from 0.625%-5% (v/v) and 0.078%-0.3125% (v/v), respectively. Heat treatment and pH alteration did not hamper the antibacterial potency of CEO. CEO and CN mediated destruction kinetics were faster in L. monocytogenes than S. typhimurium (ALM 40). Inactivation dynamics study showed CEO and CN to have slightly dose-dependent antimicrobial effects. Besides, storage conditions and time did not reduce the antimicrobial potency. The significant microbial reduction was observed in both CEO and CN treated meat samples than untreated controls. Notably, a complete reduction of viable count in meat model was observed in selective medium just after 24hrs storage. Background: Based on our previous research conducted on cinnamaldehyde (CA) exhibiting its ability to improve the growth performance of fattening pigs and the adipogenesis induction model of C2C12 cells constructed in our laboratory, we explored the effects of CA on the generation and development of lipid droplets (LDs) in adipogenic differentiated C2C12 cells. Methods and results: C2C12 cells were treated with either 0.4 mM or 0.8 mM CA. BODIPY staining and triglyceride measurements were conducted to observe the morphology of LDs, and Western blotting was used to measure the expression of their metabolism-related proteins. The results showed that the average number of LDs in the CA treatment groups was more than the control group (P < 0.05), whereas the average LD size and triglyceride content decreased (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression levels of fusion-related genes in the LDs of the CA treatment group significantly decreased, while decomposition-related genes and autophagy-related genes in the LDs in C2C12 cells significantly increased (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Cinnamaldehyde promoted the decomposition and autophagy of lipid droplets in C2C12 cells and inhibited the fusion of lipid droplets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cinnamomum genus (family Lauraceae) is one of tropical plants widely inhabiting the Earth. Their form can be shrub or tree and its bark and leaves are used to obtain essential oils. Numerous studies confirm the high effectiveness of these oils in inhibiting the development of fungi human pathogens. Therefore, such oils may become an alternative for pharmaceuticals used to fight fungal infections in future. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the fungicidal activity of cinnamon oils made from bark and leaves of various Cinnamomum species available on the market against strains of dermatotrophic fungi and yeast-like fungi. Also, the chemical composition of aforementioned oils and the activity of individual ingredients against the selected fungi causing skin infections was determined. Method: In the analyses performed, the values of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFC) were determined for all tested oils and their ingredients. The chemical composition of each oil was analysed by GC/MS and the cinnamaldehyde content determined by GC. Results: Among the oils tested, C. camphora bark oil had the weakest antifungal activity, concentration of inhibition (MIC) and fungicidal (MFC) amounts 5=10 µg/µl. The other tested oils had a comparatively high antifungal activity against dermatophytes; the MIC was at the level of 0.078-0.625 µg/µl, while the MFC was in the range of 0.156-0.625 µg/µl. The development of yeast-like fungi was inhibited more effectively by bark oils rather than leaves oils; the MIC and MFC for Cinnamomum oils amounted respectively: MIC/MFC=0.156-0.625 µg/µl (bark) and MIC=0.313-2.5 µg/µl, MFC=0.625-2.5 µg/µl (leaves). Among the examined oils ingredients: cinnamaldehyde, methoxycinnamaldehyde and eugenol were characterised by the highest activity. Conclusion: The high fungicidal potential of cinnamon oils and their ingredients may result in their future use as a natural alternative in the production of antifungal pharmacological preparations. A bimetallic Pt8Co1 supported on alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite (ZSM-5-AT) was prepared through the impregnation method. The structure and surface properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2-sorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD) and temperature-programmed reduction of H2 (H2-TPR). The TEM images present that the bimetallic Pt8Co1 nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 4–6 nm were uniformly dispersed on the alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite. The bimetallic Pt8Co1/ZSM-5-AT catalyst exhibited an extraordinary COL selectivity of 65% at a >99% CAL conversion efficiency, which showed a much higher catalytic performance (including the activity and selectivity) than the monometallic Pt/ZSM-5-AT and Co/ZSM-5-AT catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using hydrogen as reducing agent. The high catalytic activity of the bimetallic catalyst was attributed to the higher electron density of Pt species and more acidic sites of the alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite support. Summary: Chilled meat preservation from microbial contaminants is particularly important during meat storage. In this study, the new antibacterial nanofiber mats based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) and cinnamaldehyde (CMD) were fabricated to evaluate their potential on chilled meat preservation. In particular, the release kinetics, bacteriostatic properties, and the effects on chilled meat preservation were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that CMD was evenly incorporated within the BNC network, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the CMD was entrapped in BNC without any chemical interaction. Evaluation of the release mechanisms and kinetics of loaded CMD using various mathematical models showed superior efficacy of the CMD, primarily controlled by diffusion mechanism. The BNC‐CMD mats were able to effectively maintain the colour and control pH and total colony count of chilled meat following 10 days of storage at 4 °C, indicating that they are better in preserving chilled mean compared to commercial cotton fresh‐keeping mats. Simple Summary: Under the background of total prohibition, it has always been the goal of the broiler industry to improve the harm of necrotizing enteritis and the performance of broiler chickens. As a potential green and healthy feed additive, lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde have important research significance. The results showed that 350 and 500 mg/kg combined plant essential oils of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde could increase ADG and F:G, improve intestinal morphology and antioxidant capacity, and downregulate the expression of inflammatory factors. This experiment investigated the benefits of plant essential oil (EO) composed with lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde on necrotic enteritis-challenged broilers. A total of 180 1-day-old healthy yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicates of 15 chicks each. The experimental groups were as follows: the control group (CON) was fed with the basal diet and was not challenged by Eimeria acervulina (EA) and Clostridium perfringens (CP); CPEA group was also fed with a basal diet, but infected with CP and EA; CPEA_EO350 group and CPEA_EO500 group were fed with a basal diet supplemented with 350 and 500 mg/kg EO, respectively, and all infected with CP and EA. On the 7th day, each bird in the CPEA group, CPEA_EO350 group and CPEA_EO500 group was orally administrated with 1 mL Eimeria acervulina containing 5000 oocytes/mL, and the birds of the CON group were orally administrated with 1 mL normal saline. From the 15th day, 1 mL of CP type A CVCC-2030 strain (about 5 × 108 cfu/mL) was orally inoculated into each bird of the CPEA, CPEA_EO350 and CPEA_EO500 groups for three consecutive days. Similarly, the CON group was orally given 1 mL of normal saline. The CPEA stimulation reduced the average daily gain (ADG) of broilers, increased the feed-to-gain ratio (F:G), and increased the intestinal lesions of the broilers (p < 0.01), indicating that CPEA stimulation was clinically successful. Compared with the CPEA group, the ADG of CPEA_EO350 and CPEA_EO500 increased, the F:G decreased (p < 0.01), and the intestinal score of CPEA_EO500 decreased (p < 0.01). The expression of the tight junction protein of the jejunum and ileum on 21d was upregulated (p < 0.01), and the expression of jejunum inflammation factors TNF-α on 21d and jejunum and ileum inflammatory factor IL-6 on 28d were also downregulated. The CPEA_EO350 and CPEA_EO500 increased antioxidant capacity. To sum up, 350 and 500 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex plant essential oils can improve ADG and F:G, improve intestinal morphology and the body's antioxidant capacity, and downregulate the expression of inflammatory factors. It is a challenging task for selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to hydrocinnamaldehyde (HCAL) without additional by-product formation. In this work, a La2O3 supported high Ni content nanoparticle catalyst was prepared for CAL selective hydrogenation. Meanwhile, Co-La2O3 catalysts were used as a reference catalyst. XRD, TEM, STEM-HAADF, XPS, and H2-TPR measurements were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of Ni-La2O3 catalysts. The experimental results confirmed that the CAL conversion and HCAL selectivity were effectively promoted with the increase of Ni loading amounts. At a Ni/La molar ratio of four, a high HCAL selectivity of 87.4% was obtained at a CAL conversion of 88.1% under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst was recycled five times without activity loss. Combined with various characterizations, it could be inferred that the good hydrogen adsorption and dissociation capacity of Ni and the presence of a certain amount of oxygen vacancies on the La2O3 support have a positive effect on the improvement of HCAL selectivity.
