Abstract The transformation induced plasticity phenomenon occurs when one phase transforms to another one during plastic deformation, which is usually diffusionless. Here we present elemental partitioning-mediated crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation during quasi-static plastic deformation, in an alloy in form of a Cr-Ni-Co (crystalline)/Zr-Ti-Nb-Hf-Ni-Co (amorphous) nanolaminated composite, where the constitute elements of the two phases have large negative mixing enthalpy. Upon plastic deformation, atomic intermixing occurs between adjacent amorphous and crystalline phases due to extensive rearrangement of atoms at the interfaces. The large negative mixing enthalpy among the constituent elements promotes amorphous phase transformation of the original crystalline phase, which shows different composition and short-range-order structure compared with the other amorphous phase. The reduced size of the crystalline phase shortens mean-free-path of dislocations, facilitating strain hardening. The enthalpy-guided alloy design based on crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation opens up an avenue for the development of crystal-glass composite alloys with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

Abstract It is particularly essential to analyze the complex crosslinked networks within polyamide membranes and their correlation with separation efficiency for the insightful tailoring of desalination membranes. However, using the degree of network crosslinking as a descriptor yields abnormal analytical outcomes and limited correlation with desalination performance due to imperfections in segmentation and calculation methods. Herein, we introduce a more rational parameter, denoted as harmonic amide bond density (HABD), to unravel the relationship between the crosslinked networks of polyamide membranes and their desalination performance. HABD quantifies the number of distinct amide bonds per unit mass of polyamide, based on a comprehensive segmentation of polyamide structure and consistent computational protocols derived from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. Compared to its counterpart, HABD overcomes the limitations and offers a more accurate depiction of the crosslinked networks. Empirical data validate that HABD exhibits the expected correlation with the salt rejection and water permeance of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration polyamide membranes. Notably, HABD is applicable for analyzing complex crosslinked polyamide networks formed by highly functional monomers. By offering a powerful toolbox for systematic analysis of crosslinked polyamide networks, HABD facilitates the development of permselective membranes with enhanced performance in desalination applications.

Abstract Wireless internet-of-things (WIoT) with data acquisition sensors are evolving rapidly and the demand for transmission efficiency is growing rapidly. Frequency converter that synthesizes signals at different frequencies and mixes them with sensor datastreams is a key component for efficient wireless transmission. However, existing frequency converters employ separate synthesize and mix circuits with complex digital and analog circuits using complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices, naturally incurring excessive latency and energy consumption. Here we report a highly uniform and calibratable VO2 memristor oscillator, based on which we build memristor-based frequency converter using 8 $$\times$$ × 8 VO2 array that can realize in-situ frequency synthesize and mix with help of compact periphery circuits. We investigate the self-oscillation based on negative differential resistance of VO2 memristors and the programmability with different driving currents and calibration resistances, demonstrating capabilities of such frequency converter for in-situ frequency synthesize and mix for 2 ~ 8 channels with frequencies up to 48 kHz for low frequency transmission link. When transmitting classical sensor data (acoustic, vision and spatial) in an end-to-end WIoT experimental setup, our VO2-based memristive frequency converter presents up to 1.45× ~ 1.94× power enhancement with only 0.02 ~ 0.21 dB performance degradations compared with conventional CMOS-based frequency converter. This work highlights the potential in solving frequency converter’s speed and energy efficiency problems in WIoT using high crystalline quality epitaxially grown VO2 and calibratable VO2-based oscillator array, revealing a promising direction for next-generation WIoT system design.

Abstract Conventional circuit elements are constrained by limitations in area and power efficiency at processing physical signals. Recently, researchers have delved into high-order dynamics and coupled oscillation dynamics utilizing Mott devices, revealing potent nonlinear computing capabilities. However, the intricate yet manageable population dynamics of multiple artificial sensory neurons with spatiotemporal coupling remain unexplored. Here, we present an experimental hardware demonstration featuring a capacitance-coupled VO2 phase-change oscillatory network. This network serves as a continuous-time dynamic system for sensory pre-processing and encodes information in phase differences. Besides, a decision-making module for special post-processing through software simulation is designed to complete a bio-inspired dynamic sensory system. Our experiments provide compelling evidence that this transistor-free coupling network excels in sensory processing tasks such as touch recognition and gesture recognition, achieving significant advantages of fewer devices and lower energy-delay-product compared to conventional methods. This work paves the way towards an efficient and compact neuromorphic sensory system based on nano-scale nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has historically been a significant global health concern, profoundly impacting both life and well-being. In the process of CKD, with the gradual loss of renal function, the incidence of various life-threatening complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular accident, infection and stroke, is also increasing rapidly. Unfortunately, existing treatments exhibit limited ability to halt the progression of kidney injury in CKD, emphasizing the urgent need to delve into the precise molecular mechanisms governing the occurrence and development of CKD while identifying novel therapeutic targets. Renal fibrosis, a typical pathological feature of CKD, plays a pivotal role in disrupting normal renal structures and the loss of renal function. Ferroptosis is a recently discovered iron-dependent form of cell death characterized by lipid peroxide accumulation. Ferroptosis has emerged as a potential key player in various diseases and the initiation of organ fibrosis. Substantial evidence suggests that ferroptosis may significantly contribute to the intricate interplay between CKD and its progression. This review comprehensively outlines the intricate relationship between CKD and ferroptosis in terms of iron metabolism and lipid peroxidation, and discusses the current landscape of pharmacological research on ferroptosis, shedding light on promising avenues for intervention. It further illustrates recent breakthroughs in ferroptosis-related regulatory mechanisms implicated in the progression of CKD, thereby providing new insights for CKD treatment. Video Abstract

Abstract Background Sarcopenia is a senile syndrome of age-related muscle loss. It is thought to affect the development of chronic kidney disease and has a serious impact on the quality of life of the elder adults. Little is known about the association between sarcopenia and new-onset chronic kidney disease in middle-aged and elder adults. Using nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we conducted a longitudinal analysis to investigate the association between sarcopenia status and new-onset chronic kidney disease in middle-aged and elder adults in China. Methods The study population consisted of 3676 participants aged 45 or older selected from 2011 CHARLS database who had no history of chronic kidney disease at the baseline and completed the follow-up in 2015. A multivariate cox regression model was employed to examine the association between sarcopenia and the incidence of new-onset chronic kidney disease. Results Followed up for 4 years, a total of 873 (22.5%) new cases of chronic kidney disease occurred. Among them, participants diagnosed with sarcopenia (HR1.45; 95% CI 1.15–1.83) were more likely to develop new-onset chronic kidney disease than those without sarcopenia. Similarly, patients with sarcopenia were more likely to develop new-onset chronic kidney disease than those with possible sarcopenia (HR 1.27; 95%CI 1.00-1.60). Subgroup analysis revealed that elder adults aged between 60 and 75 years old (HR 1.666; 95%CI 1.20-22.28), with hypertension (HR 1.57; 95%CI 1.02–2.40), people with sarcopenia had a significantly higher risk of developing new-onset chronic kidney disease than those without sarcopenia (all P

Summary: Background: Laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomy guided by near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIR–FI) has been utilized extensively. However, it is difficult to resect “cone units” above the third branch of the Glissonean pedicle in the right posterior lobe using the laparoscopic positive or negative staining techniques. Therefore, we undertook a new laparoscopic segmentectomy based on the concept of “cone unit” assisted by interventional radiology combined with NIR-FI. Methods: Laparoscopic segmentectomy guided by NIR-FI via super-selective hepatic arteriography and trans-arterial injection of ICG was carried out on 13 patients with early-stage HCC between September 2020 and January 2022.11 of cases were successful, and relevant pathological characteristics and perioperative outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Two cases failed NIR-FI out of which one case involved over-staining to the non-target segment, and in the other case, which was to undergo laparoscopic segment V resection, only the ventral segment was stained while the imaging of the dorsal segment failed. In the intraoperative conditions, the tumor safe margin was 1.1 (0.7–1.55) cm, the interventional operation time was 50 (45.5–60.5) minutes, the operation time was 280 (242.5–307.5) minutes, the blood loss was 100 (50–200) ml, the postoperative hospital stay was 5 (4.5–5.5) days. No cases converted to laparotomy, and no serious postoperative complications developed. Conclusions: NIR-FI through super-selective hepatic arteriography and trans-arterial injection of ICG can provide a clear and lasting navigation aid for laparoscopic segmentectomy, which may have positive implication for early-stage HCC with poor preoperative liver reserves.

Abstract Background We aimed to analyse genome‐wide transcriptome differences between Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients and identify biomarkers that correlate well with muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histological fibrofatty replacement in both patients, which have not been reported. Methods One hundred and one male patients with dystrophinopathies (55 DMD and 46 BMD) were enrolled. Muscle‐derived genome‐wide RNA‐sequencing was performed in 31 DMD patients, 29 BMD patients, and 11 normal controls. Fibrofatty replacement was scored on muscle MRI and histological levels in all patients. A unique pipeline, single‐sample gene set enrichment analysis combined with Spearman's rank correlations (ssGSEA‐Cor) was developed to identify the most correlated gene signature for fibrofatty replacement. Quantitative real‐time PCR (qRT‐PCR) analysis, western blot analysis, and single‐nucleus RNA‐sequencing (snRNA‐seq) were performed in the remaining patients to validate the most correlated gene signature. The rapid identification of landslides in mountainous terrain through remote sensing imagery after earthquakes or heavy rainfall is crucial for assessing the severity of the situation and providing timely assistance for post-disaster rescue operations. However, traditional manual interpretation methods and computer vision techniques tend to be inefficient and time-consuming. To address this problem, we propose a novel algorithm called LSI-YOLOv8, which builds upon the lightweight YOLOv8 to enable fast and accurate landslide identification using remote sensing imagery. In this study, we introduce optimization techniques integrated into the YOLOv8 model. Firstly, we incorporate an expandable residual attention Dilation-wise Residual Segmentation (DWRSeg) module to reconstruct its neck structure, reducing parameters and computational load. Additionally, we enhance the positioning ability of the model by replacing the bounding box loss function Complete Intersection over Union (CIoU) with Efficient Intersection over Union (EIoU), optimizing it to improve computing speed. Through comparative experiments with other state-of-the-art models, the accuracy of our LSI-YOLOv8 significantly outperforms Mask-RCNN, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, YOLOv8, and YOLOv9 model, with mAP@0.5 being 9.0%,7.7%, 4.0%, 6.3%, and 2.9% higher than other models, while mAP@0.5 :0.95 is 3.1%,3.6%, 2.7%, 4.8%, and 0.3% higher than others, respectively. Furthermore, the detecting speed of the LSI-YOLOv8 model is 73.2 f/s, which is notably faster by 15.5 f/s, 3.5 f/s, 5.1 f/s, 5.9 f/s, and 4.3 f/s respectively, compared to Mask-RCNN, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, YOLOv8, and YOLOv9. The proposed method provides valuable insights for advancing landslide identification methodologies. The focus of subsequent work will be more on multi-source data fusion, such as Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to remove the influence of some background information to improve the accuracy of landslide identification.

Centralized deepfake service providers have large amounts of computing power and training data, giving them the ability to produce high-quality deepfake content. However, once these service providers are attacked or malfunction, it may lead to the collapse of the entire deepfake ecosystem, making deepfake a potential threat to data security. This monopoly development has led to the uneven distribution of deepfake resources, which in turn has brought about the risk of single points of failure. To deal with the problem, this paper proposes a decentralized deepfake task management algorithm (DD-TMA) based on blockchain and edge computing. The blockchain in this algorithm can provide a decentralized storage and management platform to ensure that the data and models of deepfake tasks will not be tampered with or lost. Edge computing can distribute tasks to edge devices close to the data source for processing, reducing data transmission delays and bandwidth consumption, and improving the efficiency and security of deepfake tasks. The paper innovatively integrates blockchain, federated computing, and edge computing. Firstly, the algorithm establishes a decentralized computing platform based on blockchain. Subsequently, it enhances computing power during the execution of decentralized deepfake tasks through the integration of federated computing and edge computing. Finally, the algorithm increases the active performers of decentralized deepfake tasks through gamification, thereby improving task execution efficiency. Experiments conducted in this study on public data sets demonstrate that the algorithm is efficient, robust, and reusable. Compared with other algorithms, the efficiency of DD-TMA is improved by more than 20% and the stability is improved by more than 13%. This algorithm proves effective in solving the problems encountered in the execution of centralized deepfake tasks. The research provides new ideas for future evaluations of decentralized deepfake effects based on different strategies.

Abstract Introduction Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by the enlargement of the left ventricle or biventricular, accompanied by myocardial systolic dysfunction. Chlamydia psittacosis (CP) is a zoonotic pathogen, which can cause severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, and acute organ dysfunction. The deterioration of DCM caused by CP infection is extremely rare, and few cases of successful management were reported. Case presentation We reported a 67-year-old male patient with DCM and chronic heart failure. Who was admitted to ICU with severe pneumonia, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, acute decompensated heart failure, arrhythmia, and cardiogenic shock. Mechanical ventilation (MV) and venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) were established for respiratory and circulatory support. Broncho alveolar lavage fluid(BALF)was collected for culture and metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS) test. Repeated mNGS tests indicated the high possibility of CP pneumonia, thereafter, moxifloxacin and doxycycline were prescribed. After targeted antibiotics and organ support treatment, pneumonia, respiratory and circulatory failure were gradually resolved, patient was successfully weaned from MV and VA-ECMO. Finally, the patient was recovered and discharged alive. Conclusions Severe respiratory and circulatory failure caused by CP infection in DCM patients is a rare life-threatening clinical condition. Early accurate diagnosis, targeted antibiotic therapy, coupled with extracorporeal life support posed positive impact on the patient’s disease course and outcome.

Abstract Chromatin accessibility has been used to define how cells adopt region-specific neural fates. BAF45D is one of the subunits of a specialised chromatin remodelling BAF complex. It has been reported that BAF45D is expressed in spinal cord neural stem cells (NSCs) and regulates their fate specification. Within the developing vertebrate spinal cord, HOX genes exhibit spatially restricted expression patterns. However, the chromatin accessibility of BAF45D binding HOX genes in spinal cord NSCs is unclear. In the present study, we found that in H9-derived spinal cord NSCs, BAF45D targets TBX6, a gene that regulates spinal cord neural mesodermal progenitors. Furthermore, BAF45D binding to the NES gene is much more enriched in H9-derived spinal cord NSCs chromatin compared to ESCs chromatin. In addition, BAF45D binding to anterior and trunk/central HOX genes, but not to lumbosacral HOX genes, was much more enriched in NSCs chromatin compared to ESCs chromatin. These results may shed new light on the role of BAF45D in regulating region-specific spinal cord NSCs by targeting HOX genes.

Abstract Background Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene five antibody positive (MDA5+) dermatomyositis (DM) is significantly associated with rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD). Early detection of RP-ILD remains a major challenge. This study aims to identify and validate prognostic factors for RP-ILD in MDA5+ DM patients. Methods Plasma samples from 20 MDA5+ DM patients and 10 healthy controls (HC) were collected for proteomic analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis. The proteins of interest were validated in independent samples (20 HC, 20 MDA5+ DM with RP-ILD, and 20 non-RP-ILD patients) with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results A total of 413 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were detected between the MDA5+ DM patients and HC. When comparing DEPs between RP-ILD and non-RP-ILD patients, 79 proteins were changed in RP-ILD patients, implicating acute inflammatory response, coagulation, and complement cascades. Six candidate biomarkers were confirmed with ELISA. Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), serum amyloid A1 (SAA1), and Kininogen 1 (KNG1) concentrations were significantly elevated in RP-ILD patients than those in non-RP-ILD patients and HC. In the different clinical subgroups, SPP1 was particularly elevated in the high-risk RP-ILD subgroup of MDA5+ DM. Conclusion This study provides novel insights into the pathogenesis of RP-ILD development in MDA5+ DM and suggests the plasma protein SPP1 could serve as a potential blood biomarker for RP-ILD early warning.

Plant functional traits are indicative of plant responses to environmental changes, influencing ecosystem functions. Leaves, as a key focus in studying plant functional traits, present an area where the impact of nitrogen deposition and altered rainfall patterns on functional diversity remains ambiguous. To elucidate plant response mechanisms to environmental factors, we employed a canopy-based platform to add nitrogen, water, and their combination. We assessed the functional traits and community-weighted mean of the leaves of three dominant trees and three dominant shrubs. The results showed that nitrogen addition to the canopy significantly increased the leaf dry matter content of the Celtis sinensis Pers, but markedly decreased the specific leaf area of the Liquidambar formosana Hance. The nitrogen-water interaction did not notably affect the specific leaf area and equivalent water thickness of leaves. Canopy addition of nitrogen, water, and their combined interaction substantially lowered leaf nitrogen content and markedly increased leaf C/N. The structural equation model demonstrated a significant negative correlation between leaf dry matter content, equivalent water thickness, and leaf nitrogen content, as well as between equivalent water thickness and leaf phosphorus content. Our results provide evidence for the adaptation of plants to the environment and different strategies for resource and energy utilization.

Multimodal named entity recognition plays a crucial role in the construction process of knowledge graphs as it directly influences the quality of entity extraction and classification, which in turn affects the overall quality of knowledge graph construction. However, most existing multimodal named entity recognition algorithms do not consider the correlation between text and images. They either use visual features of images as the attention of the text modality or fuse them with textual features. In the case of multimodal tweets containing both text and images, three categories of data can be identified based on the correlation between the two: text that is related to images, text that is partially related to images, and text that is not related to images. Using irrelevant or partially relevant image features as text cross-modal attention can result in incorrect text representation, ultimately leading to misclassification of entities and negatively impacting the model’s performance. To address the problem of uncertainty or negative impact caused by the lack of relevance or partial correlation between text and images, this paper proposes a visually enhanced text representation algorithm based on a hybrid of dynamic gating and correlation coefficient. We conducted experiments on two benchmark datasets, namely Twitter-2015 and Twitter-2017. The experimental results were analyzed comprehensively to showcase the strengths of the proposed model.

In this article, a honeycomb vertical surrounding gate access transistor array scheme is proposed to further decrease the DRAM cell area with aggressively shrink bit line (BL) pitch and word line (WL) pitch adopting the ZigZag BL and WL air gap. To verify the process feasibility, process flow emulation is optimized by virtual fabrication with SEMulator3D®. Moreover, the ZigZag BL feasibility in lithography process is evaluated by optical proximity correction (OPC) simulation. In addition, the parasitic capacitance of BL and WL decrease 22.8% and 76.8%, respectively, as compared to reference paper. And the electrical properties of the proposed device are simulated by three-dimensional technology computer aided design (3D TCAD). The GIDL effect is prohibited through prolonging the drain extension and reducing its doping concentration. Finally, the surrounding gate transistor can achieve high on-state current ( $30~\mu \text{A}$ ) at $\text{V}_{\mathrm {g}}=1.5$ V and off-state current below 0.1 fA at $\text{V}_{\mathrm {d}}= -0.2$ V. These results are beneficial for the direction of pathfinding for increasing the density and decreasing the energy consumption of DRAM.

Exosomes exhibit complex biological functions and mediate a variety of biological processes, such as promoting axonal regeneration and functional recovery after injury. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to play a crucial role in axonal regeneration. However, the role of the lncRNA-microRNA-messenger RNA (mRNA)-competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network in exosome-mediated axonal regeneration remains unclear. In this study, we performed RNA transcriptome sequencing analysis to assess mRNA expression patterns in exosomes produced by cultured fibroblasts (FC-EXOs) and Schwann cells (SC-EXOs). Differential gene expression analysis, Gene Ontology analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis, and protein-protein interaction network analysis were used to explore the functions and related pathways of RNAs isolated from FC-EXOs and SC-EXOs. We found that the ribosome-related central gene Rps5 was enriched in FC-EXOs and SC-EXOs, which suggests that it may promote axonal regeneration. In addition, using the miRWalk and Starbase prediction databases, we constructed a regulatory network of ceRNAs targeting Rps5, including 27 microRNAs and five lncRNAs. The ceRNA regulatory network, which included Ftx and Miat, revealed that exsosome-derived Rps5 inhibits scar formation and promotes axonal regeneration and functional recovery after nerve injury. Our findings suggest that exosomes derived from fibroblast and Schwann cells could be used to treat injuries of peripheral nervous system.

Three-dimensional (3D) video with depth information is essential for many applications in the consumer electronics industry. The 3D-high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the latest 3D video coding standard. Nonetheless, it utilizes various complex coding techniques to create extra intermediate views for better representation of 3D videos, which imposes significant challenges for real-time 3D video applications. Specifically, the high complexity of 3D-HEVC intra coding could be a significant barrier to the adoption of 3D video in consumer electronics. Therefore, in this research, a low-complexity 3D-HEVC intra coding technique is proposed. Firstly, we perform a complexity analysis of 3D-HEVC intra coding. Secondly, we develop a multi-layer features fusion (MLFF) model to estimate the optimal coding tree unit (CTU) depth and prediction unit (PU) mode. Thirdly, to improve the model’s prediction accuracy, we incorporate two external features into the model: the quantization parameter (QP) and texture complexity. Finally, we embed the MLFF model into the 3D-HEVC test platform. The experimental results demonstrate that the suggested method can effectively reduce the 3D-HEVC intra coding time with a small amount of rate-distortion (RD) performance loss while maintaining the subjective quality of the synthesized view.

Abstract Objectives The relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of developing kidney stones is unclear, and we aimed to assess the association between CRP and kidney stones in US adults. Methods We used data from NHANES 2007–2010, and we excluded participants who were under 18 years of age and lacked data on CRP and kidney stones. Finally, we included a total of 11,033 participants and performed weighted multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis to assess the independent relationship between CRP and kidney stones. Results The mean prevalence of kidney stones among the participants was 9.8%. Notably, as CRP levels increased, the prevalence of kidney stones exhibited a corresponding rise across quartiles (Kidney stones: Quartile 1: 7.59%; Quartile 2: 8.77%; Quartile 3: 9.64%; Quartile 4: 10.89%). CRP was positively associated with the risk of kidney stones (Model 1: OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01–1.18, p = 0.03; Model 2: OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.00–1.18, p = 0.03, Model 3: OR = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02–1.26, p = 0.04). Participants in the highest CRP quartile experienced a 69% increased risk of kidney stones compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.04–2.59, p = 0.03). Notably, interaction tests revealed that gender, BMI, diabetes, hypertension, CKD and smoking or alcohol consumption status did not significantly influence the association between CRP and kidney stones. Conclusions Our findings reveal a significant association between higher CRP levels and an increased risk of kidney stones. In clinical practice, heightened awareness of CRP as a potential biomarker could aid in risk assessment and management strategies for kidney stone patients.

Abstract Melatonin plays important roles in multiple stress responses; however, the downstream signaling pathway and molecular mechanism remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the transcriptional regulation of melatonin-induced salt stress tolerance in Phaseolus vulgaris L. and identify the key downstream transcription factors of melatonin through transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. The melatonin-induced transcriptional network of hormones, transcription factors, and functional genes was established under both control and stress conditions. Among these, eight candidate transcription factors were identified via gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses, one gene related to transmembrane transport of salts (Phvul.004G177300). These genes may play a role in maintaining the cell structure and excreting sodium ions outside the cell or transporting them to the vacuoles for storage. Melatonin regulates the Phvul.009G210332 gene and metabolites C05642 (N-acetyl-N-2-formyl-5-methoxycanurine), C05643 (6-hydroxymelatonin), C05660 (5-methoxyindoleacetic acid) involved in tryptophan metabolism. The metabolites C05642 and C05643 were identified as decomposition products of tryptophan, indicating that exogenous melatonin entered the P. vulgaris tissue and was metabolized. Melatonin promotes the synthesis and metabolism of tryptophan, which is crucial to plant metabolism, growth, maintenance, and repair.

A trajectory planning method for local obstacle avoidance based on an improved artificial potential field (APF) method is proposed, which is aimed at the problem for dual motor driven unmanned tracked vehicles avoiding dynamic and static obstacles in unstructured environments. Firstly, in traditional artificial potential fields, by adding virtual target points, unmanned tracked vehicles can avoid large obstacles and reach the target point in off-road environments. Secondly, a water droplet type repulsive potential field function for static obstacles and an improved dynamic obstacle potential field function including relative velocity function and relative acceleration function are established in the proposed improved APF method to improve the smoothness of lane changing obstacle avoidance paths. The simulation results of overtaking and obstacle avoidance in the same direction show that the change in heading angle is reduced by 42.9%, and the lateral displacement is reduced by 39.5%. Finally, a trajectory planning method based on improved APF for obstacle avoidance and lane changing of the unmanned tracked vehicle is constructed, which also considers the speed planning with kinematic and dynamic constraints. For obstacle avoidance under lateral meeting condition, the collaborative simulation results of Prescan-Adams-Matlab/Simulink show that the change in heading angle is reduced by 84%, and the lateral displacement is almost zero. Under complex working conditions with multiple static and dynamic obstacles, the results of hardware in loop (HIL) simulation testing and vehicle experiments show that the number of drastic changes in turning radius and heading angle of the vehicle is significantly reduced, and the maximum amplitude was reduced by 63.2% and 37.5% respectively, making the vehicle’s obstacle avoidance and lane changing safer, smoother, and more efficient.

Abstract Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are usually considered as extreme environments with high pressure, high temperature, scarce food, and chemical toxicity, while many local inhabitants have evolved special adaptive mechanisms for residence in this representative ecosystem. In this study, we constructed a high-quality genome assembly for a novel deep-sea anemone species (Actinostola sp.) that was resident at a depth of 2,971 m in an Edmond vent along the central Indian Ocean ridge, with a total size of 424.3 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 383 kb. The assembled genome contained 265 Mb of repetitive sequences and 20,812 protein-coding genes. Taken together, our reference genome provides a valuable genetic resource for exploring the evolution and adaptive clues of this deep-sea anemone.

Abstract Plasma metabolomics profiling is an emerging methodology to identify metabolic pathways underlying cardiovascular health (CVH). The objective of this study was to define metabolomic profiles underlying CVH in a cohort of Black adults, a population that is understudied but suffers from disparate levels of CVD risk factors. The Morehouse-Emory Cardiovascular (MECA) Center for Health Equity study cohort consisted of 375 Black adults (age 53 ± 10, 39% male) without known CVD. CVH was determined by the AHA Life’s Simple 7 (LS7) score, calculated from measured blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol, and self-reported physical activity, diet, and smoking. Plasma metabolites were assessed using untargeted high-resolution metabolomics profiling. A metabolome wide association study (MWAS) identified metabolites associated with LS7 score after adjusting for age and sex. Using Mummichog software, metabolic pathways that were significantly enriched in metabolites associated with LS7 score were identified. Metabolites representative of these pathways were compared across clinical domains of LS7 score and then developed into a metabolomics risk score for prediction of CVH. We identified novel metabolomic signatures and pathways associated with CVH in a cohort of Black adults without known CVD. Representative and highly prevalent metabolites from these pathways included glutamine, glutamate, urate, tyrosine and alanine, the concentrations of which varied with BMI, fasting glucose, and blood pressure levels. When assessed in conjunction, these metabolites were independent predictors of CVH. One SD increase in the novel metabolomics risk score was associated with a 0.88 higher LS7 score, which translates to a 10.4% lower incident CVD risk. We identified novel metabolomic signatures of ideal CVH in a cohort of Black Americans, showing that a core group of metabolites central to nitrogen balance, bioenergetics, gluconeogenesis, and nucleotide synthesis were associated with CVH in this population.

Abstract Aims Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been implicated in thrombotic diseases. There is no definitive explanation for how NETs form during acute ischemic strokes (AIS). The purpose of our study was to investigate the potential mechanism and role of NETs formation in the AIS process. Methods As well as 45 healthy subjects, 45 patients with AIS had ELISA tests performed to detect NET markers. Expression of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) on platelet microvesicles (PMVs) was analyzed by flow cytometry in healthy subjects and AIS patients’ blood samples. We established middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) mice model to elucidate the interaction between PMPs and NETs. Results A significant elevation in NET markers was found in patient plasma in AIS patients, and neutrophils generated more NETs from patients’ neutrophils. HMGB1 expression was upregulated on PMVs from AIS patients and induced NET formation. NETs enhanced Procoagulant activity (PCA) through tissue factor and via platelet activation. Targeting lactadherin in genetical and in pharmacology could regulate the formation of NETs in MCAO model. Conclusions NETs mediated by PMVs derived HMGB1 exacerbate thrombosis and brain injury in AIS. Video Abstract

Abstract The circadian-controlled DNA repair exhibits a strong diurnal rhythm. Disruption in circadian clock and DNA repair is closely linked with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression, but the mechanism remains unknown. Here, we show that polymerase beta (POLB), a critical enzyme in the DNA base excision repair pathway, is rhythmically expressed at the translational level in mouse livers. Hepatic POLB dysfunction dampens clock homeostasis, whereas retards HCC progression, by mediating the methylation of the 4th CpG island on the 5′UTR of clock gene Per1. Clinically, POLB is overexpressed in human HCC samples and positively associated with poor prognosis. Furthermore, the hepatic rhythmicity of POLB protein expression is orchestrated by Calreticulin (CALR). Our findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanism underlying the synergy between clock and food signals on the POLB-driven BER system and reveal new clock-dependent carcinogenetic effects of POLB. Therefore, chronobiological modulation of POLB may help to promote precise interventions for HCC.

[Objective] Current daily metro track inspections, including manual detection and track inspection vehicle method, suffer from issues such as low efficiency and high costs, failing to meet the increasing demands for rail transit operation safety. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automatic identification and early-warning system for on-board rail corrugation based on image processing technology. [Method] The overall solution for automatic rail corrugation identification is elucidated, covering the denoising and uneven illumination correction of rail surface images, the positioning and segmentation of rail surface images, the localization of rail corrugation interval, and the estimation of rail corrugation cycles. The automatic rail corrugation identification and assessment method based on image processing is elaborated. The construction of the defect automatic identification and early-warning system is described from both software and hardware perspective based on system composition and logic architecture, and the demonstration application situation of the system in Beijing Subway is introduced. [Result & Conclusion] The system enables real-time detection, localization, assessment and early-warning of rail corrugation defects. Demonstrative application test results indicate that the system achieves an identification accuracy of over 97% for rail corrugation defects. In comparison to conventional manual inspection and dedicated track inspection vehicles, the system exhibits a significant advantage in detection efficiency.

Abstract Aims Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major cause of mortality in patients with diabetes, and the potential strategies for treating DCM are insufficient. Melatonin (Mel) has been shown to attenuate DCM, however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The role of vascular endothelial growth factor-B (VEGF-B) in DCM is little known. In present study, we aimed to investigate whether Mel alleviated DCM via regulation of VEGF-B and explored its underlying mechanisms. Methods and results We found that Mel significantly alleviated cardiac dysfunction and improved autophagy of cardiomyocytes in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) induced cardiomyopathy mice. VEGF-B was highly expressed in DCM mice in comparison with normal mice, and its expression was markedly reduced after Mel treatment. Mel treatment diminished the interaction of VEGF-B and Glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) and reduced the interaction of GRP78 and protein kinase RNA -like ER kinase (PERK). Furthermore, Mel increased phosphorylation of PERK and eIF2α, then up-regulated the expression of ATF4. VEGF-B−/− mice imitated the effect of Mel on wild type diabetic mice. Interestingly, injection with Recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9)-VEGF-B or administration of GSK2656157 (GSK), an inhibitor of phosphorylated PERK abolished the protective effect of Mel on DCM. Furthermore, rapamycin, an autophagy agonist displayed similar effect with Mel treatment; while 3-Methyladenine (3-MA), an autophagy inhibitor neutralized the effect of Mel on high glucose-treated neonatal rat ventricular myocytes. Conclusions These results demonstrated that Mel attenuated DCM via increasing autophagy of cardiomyocytes, and this cardio-protective effect of Mel was dependent on VEGF-B/GRP78/PERK signaling pathway.

Abstract Panax ginseng is an important medicinal plant, and ginsenosides are the main bioactive molecules of ginseng. The TCP (TBI, CYC, PCF) family is a group of transcription factors (TFs) that play an important role in plant growth and development, hormone signalling and synthesis of secondary metabolites. In our study, 78 PgTCP transcripts were identified from the established ginseng transcriptome database. A phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the 67 PgTCP transcripts with complete open reading frames were classified into three subfamilies, including CIN, PCF, and CYC/TB1. Protein structure analysis showed that PgTCP genes had bHLH structures. Chromosomal localization analysis showed that 63 PgTCP genes were localized on 17 of the 24 chromosomes of the Chinese ginseng genome. Expression pattern analysis showed that PgTCP genes differed among different lineages and were spatiotemporally specific. Coexpression network analysis indicated that PgTCP genes were coexpressed and involved in plant activities or metabolic regulation in ginseng. The expression levels of PgTCP genes from class I (PCF) were significantly downregulated, while the expression levels of PgTCP genes from class II (CIN and CYC/TB1) were upregulated, suggesting that TCP genes may be involved in the regulation of secondary metabolism in ginseng. As the PgTCP26-02 gene was found to be related to ginsenoside synthesis, its predicted protein structure and expression pattern were further analysed. Our results provide new insights into the origin, differentiation, evolution and function of the PgTCP gene family in ginseng, as well as the regulation of plant secondary metabolism.

Snow depth is a fundamental parameter in hydrological and climate models, which is crucial for studying climate change, hydrological cycles, and ecosystem changes. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) is one of the most promising snow depth retrieval methods, which is sensitive to the shape, direction, and vertical distribution of targets. The dense medium random-volume-over-ground (DM-RVoG) model for PolInSAR has been shown to be workable for snow depth retrieval, it still suffers from the inaccuracy of the parameters representing the phase center and decorrelation. In this study, based on the backscattering mechanism of snow, a novel snow depth retrieval method is proposed to improve the DM-RVoG model using polarization decomposition and decorrelation optimization. First, the polarization decomposition is extended to obtain the ground scattering phase. Then, the coherence region boundary estimation method is put forward to obtain pure volume decorrelation. Finally, the proposed method is validated using Ku-band UAV SAR data, and the accuracy is assessed using in situ data. The correlation coefficient, root mean square error, and mean absolute error of the proposed method are 0.88, 4.98, and 4.08 cm, respectively, demonstrating significant improvements compared with the original method.

Background: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) has been considered a neurophysiological disease, having as symptoms dysfunction in somatosensory and motor system excitability. Rehabilitation has been considered an effective treatment for CAI. However, few studies have explored the effects of rehabilitation on neuroplasticity in the CAI population. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rehabilitation on cortical activities for postural control in CAI patients and to find the correlation between the change in cortical activities and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). Methods: Thirteen participants with CAI (6 female, 7 male, age = 33.8 ± 7.7 years, BMI = 24.7 ± 4.9 kg/m2) received a home exercise program for about 40 min per day, four days per week and six weeks, including ankle range-of-motion exercise, muscle strengthening, and balance activities. Cortical activation, PROs and Y-balance test outcomes were assessed and compared before and after rehabilitation. Cortical activation was detected via Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while the participants performed single-leg stance tasks. Results: The participants had better PROs and Y balance test outcomes after rehabilitation. Greater cortical activation was observed in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1, d = 0.66, p = 0.035), the superior temporal gyrus (STG, d = 1.06, p = 0.002) and the middle temporal gyrus (MTG, d = 0.66, p = 0.035) in CAI patients after rehabilitation. Moreover, significant positive correlations were observed between the recovery of ankle symptoms and the change of cortical activation in S1 (r = 0.74, p = 0.005) and STG (r = 0.72, p = 0.007) respectively. Conclusion: The current study reveals that six weeks of rehabilitation can cause greater cortical activation in S1, STG and MTG. This increase in cortical activation suggested a better ability to perceive somatosensory stimuli and may have a compensatory role in function improvement.

NbTaTiV and CrNbTaTiV were fabricated by arc melting and effect of Cr element on electrochemical and high temperature hot corrosion behavior were compared. Electrochemical corrosion investigations revealed that Laves phase at grain boundaries of CrNbTaTiV would underwent galvanic corrosion, resulting in a marginal reduction in corrosion resistance. The results of high temperature hot corrosion showed that within Na2SO4 + 25 wt% NaCl molten salt environment, the oxide film formed by Cr element effectively improved the surface stability, reduced the formation of unprotected loose corrosion products and the generation of low melting point chlorides with strong volatility, which improved the resistance of molten salt corrosion.

Owing to their great potential to enhance the structural, mechanical, and electrical properties of materials, numerous researchers have dedicated their efforts to manufacturing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-reinforced composites via additive manufacturing (AM) to leverage AM's ability to fabricate intricate structural components. However, there is currently limited research on MWCNTs in photosensitive resin (PR) systems processed via a type of vat photopolymerization AM technique - digital light processing (DLP). Additionally, the distribution pattern of MWCNTs in PR systems is still unknown. To address these research gaps, this investigation focuses on fabricating MWCNTs-reinforced PR (MWCNTs-PR) via DLP and studying the effects of MWCNTs content on microstructure characterizations and mechanical properties of MWCNTs-PR. These results show that PR with 0.05 wt% MWCNTs addition exhibits a 25 % increase in elastic modulus and a 2 % increase in bending strength compared to pure PR. To achieve a more uniform distribution of MWCNTs in the PR, a combination of an ultrasonic bath and mechanical stirring was adopted. To further investigate the mechanism behind MWCNTs-enhanced bending resistance, a multi-material layered 3D printing structure was developed. The experimental findings reveal that the 10001 structure yields the highest bending modulus, surpassing the control group by 14.9 %. To validate the bending resistance mechanism attributed to MWCNTs-PR, finite element analysis was conducted.

CD36 is a highly glycosylated integral membrane protein that belongs to the scavenger receptor class B family and regulates the pathological progress of metabolic diseases. CD36 was recently found to be widely expressed in various cell types in the nervous system, including endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, and microglia. CD36 mediates a number of regulatory processes, such as endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammatory responses, which are involved in many central nervous system diseases, such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injury. CD36 antagonists can suppress CD36 expression or prevent CD36 binding to its ligand, thereby achieving inhibition of CD36-mediated pathways or functions. Here, we reviewed the mechanisms of action of CD36 antagonists, such as Salvianolic acid B, tanshinone IIA, curcumin, sulfosuccinimidyl oleate, antioxidants, and small-molecule compounds. Moreover, we predicted the structures of binding sites between CD36 and antagonists. These sites can provide targets for more efficient and safer CD36 antagonists for the treatment of central nervous system diseases.

Recent studies on the accessibility of sports facilities have rarely considered the specific attributes of the facilities, limiting their ability to define service potential, and have often neglected the critical aspect of equitable access. This study proposed a novel approach based on remote sensing images to optimize the spatial accessibility of outdoor sports facilities. Using Shanghai, China, as the study area, the study identified four types of sports facilities using a deep learning object detection method, which allowed their service capacities (areas) to be measured more precisely. A greedy heuristic algorithm was then developed based on a "trade-off" strategy that seeks to optimize facility access by reconciling the objectives of enhancing access and ensuring equality and by weighing the benefits of utilizing existing resources (school facilities) against the necessity of developing new ones. The object detection method achieved precision and recall rates of 88% and 96%, respectively, and the optimization efforts resulted in a 73% increase in accessibility while also significantly reducing the Gini coefficient from 0.58 to 0.34. The proposed algorithm outperformed the random selection and all-school-opening strategies. The results indicated that the methodology can effectively create refined datasets for outdoor sports facilities and enhance their accessibility.

Stone masonry structure has been widely utilized in dam construction due to its low cost and easy operation. However, its long-term durability has also been raised wide concern. Based on the demolition of the Kada dam, this study investigated whether the durability of block stones and mortar in the stone masonry dams can be guaranteed under the influence of combined factors, such as freeze-thaw cycles, water seepage, and high-velocity erosion. Through a combination of on-site sampling and laboratory testing, the physical properties, mechanical performance, composition, and pore characteristics of the block stones and mortar, predominantly composed of limestone, were thoroughly examined and evaluated. The results indicate that both the crest and center block stones exhibit a dense structure, with a saturated compressive strength exceeding 50 MPa, meeting the strength requirements for the reconstruction of new buried concrete gravity dams, which could supply sound foundation for the reuse and recycling during reconstruction of the dam.

Heat treatment free aluminum alloys have been developed for wire arc directed energy deposition (DED) large thin-walled components, but their further performance enhancement methods remain unexplored. In this study, laser shock peening (LSP) treatment was performed on wire arc DED Al-6Mg-0.3Sc components. The results show that LSP creates a gradient microstructure with submicro-grains near the surface. The effects of LSP on defects were quantified by quasi-in-situ CT, demonstrating a reduction in porosity by over 68% together with decreased size. Simultaneously, tensile strength increases by 39.5% to 295.8 ± 6.4 MPa with only a marginal loss of elongation, as compared to the as-deposited (AD) state. This was due to the accumulation of dislocations and continuous dynamic recrystallization lead to grain refinement, as well as the appearance of a triple heterogeneous microstructure. Therefore, this study offers a novel solution for manufacturing of high-performance heat treatment free large thin-walled components.

Honey is not equivalent to sugar and possess a worldwide health promoting effects such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activities. Nevertheless, the potential impacts of honey on high-fat diet induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and gut microbiota remain to be explored. Herein a high-fat diet was used to induce a mouse CKD model, and analysis was conducted on liver, kidney, spleen indices, tissue morphology, biochemical parameters, CKD related genes, and gut microbial diversity. The results indicated that significant inhibitory effects on renal damage caused by a high-fat diet in mice and improvement in disease symptoms were observed upon honey treatment. Significant changes were also found in serum TC, TG, UA, and BUN as well as the inflammation-related protein TNF-α and IL-6 levels in renal tissues. Gene expression analysis revealed that honey intake closely relates to gut microbiota diversity, which can regulate the composition of gut microbiota, increase microbial diversity, especially Bifidobacteriales and S24_7 and promote the synthesis of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In summary, this study suggests that honey has both preventive and therapeutic effects on CKD, which may be associated with its ability to improve microbial composition, increase microbial diversity, and regulate SCFAs levels.

ABSTRACTThe gut commensal bacteria Christensenellaceae species are negatively associated with many metabolic diseases, and have been seen as promising next-generation probiotics. However, the cultured Christensenellaceae strain resources were limited, and their beneficial mechanisms for improving metabolic diseases have yet to be explored. In this study, we developed a method that enabled the enrichment and cultivation of Christensenellaceae strains from fecal samples. Using this method, a collection of Christensenellaceae Gut Microbial Biobank (ChrisGMB) was established, composed of 87 strains and genomes that represent 14 species of 8 genera. Seven species were first described and the cultured Christensenellaceae resources have been significantly expanded at species and strain levels. Christensenella strains exerted different abilities in utilization of various complex polysaccharides and other carbon sources, exhibited host-adaptation capabilities such as acid tolerance and bile tolerance, produced a wide range of volatile probiotic metabolites and secondary bile acids. Cohort analyses demonstrated that Christensenellaceae and Christensenella were prevalent in various cohorts and the abundances were significantly reduced in T2D and OB cohorts. At species level, Christensenellaceae showed different changes among healthy and disease cohorts. C. faecalis, F. tenuis, L. tenuis, and Guo. tenuis significantly reduced in all the metabolic disease cohorts. The relative abundances of C. minuta, C. hongkongensis and C. massiliensis showed no significant change in NAFLD and ACVD. and C. tenuis and C. acetigenes showed no significant change in ACVD, and Q. tenuis and Geh. tenuis showed no significant change in NAFLD, when compared with the HC cohort. So far as we know, this is the largest collection of cultured resource and first exploration of Christensenellaceae prevalences and abundances at species level.

AbstractObjective To predict the incidence of postoperative ileus in bladder cancer patients after radical cystectomy.Methods We retrospectively analyzed the perioperative data of 452 bladder cancer patients who underwent radical cystectomy with urinary diversion at the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University between 2016 and 2021. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the risk factors for postoperative ileus. Finally, a nomogram model was established and verified based on the independent risk factors.Results Our study revealed that 96 patients (21.2%) developed postoperative ileus. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that the independent risk factors for postoperative ileus after radical cystectomy included age > 65.0 years, high or low body mass index, constipation, hypoalbuminemia, and operative time. We established a nomogram prediction model based on these independent risk factors. Validation by calibration curves, concordance index, and decision curve analysis showed a strong correlation between predicted and actual probabilities of occurrence.Conclusion Our nomogram prediction model provides surgeons with a simple tool to predict the incidence of postoperative ileus in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy.

ABSTRACTIn small series, third-party fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been successful in decolonizing the gut from clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Less is known about the short- and long-term effects of FMT on larger panels of ARGs. We analyzed 226 pre- and post-treatment stool samples from a randomized placebo-controlled trial of FMT in 100 patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation or receiving anti-leukemia induction chemotherapy for 47 ARGs. These patients have heavy antibiotic exposure and a high incidence of colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms. Samples from each patient spanned a period of up to 9 months, allowing us to describe both short- and long-term effects of FMT on ARGs, while the randomized design allowed us to distinguish between spontaneous changes vs. FMT effect. We find an overall bimodal pattern. In the first phase (days to weeks after FMT), low-level transfer of ARGs largely associated with commensal healthy donor microbiota occurs. This phase is followed by long-term resistance to new ARGs as stable communities with colonization resistance are formed after FMT. The clinical implications of these findings are likely context-dependent and require further research. In the setting of cancer and intensive therapy, long-term ARG decolonization could translate into fewer downstream infections.

ABSTRACTCampylobacter upsaliensis was the most common Campylobacter species in pets’ gastrointestinal tracts and has been isolated from patients with bacteremia, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, spontaneous abortion, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, the genetic characteristics and the full extent of its significance as a human pathogen remain to be fully understood. This study involved an investigation for genomic analysis of 154 strains from different sources and additional antimicrobial resistance profiles of 26 strains for this species. The genomes contained 1,558–1,971 CDS and the genome sizes were estimated to vary from 1.53 Mb to 1.86 Mb, with an average GC content of 34.71%. The entire analyzed genomes could be divided into three clades (A, B, and C) based on ANI and phylogenomic analysis. Significantly, nearly all strains in Clade B were isolated from patient samples, and the virulence-related sequences FlgD, GmhA, and CdtC might serve as determining factors for the classification of Clade B. Half of the tested isolates had MIC values over 64 μg mL−1 for nalidixic acid, gentamicin, and streptomycin. Isolates from pets in China carried more resistant elements in the genomes. This study both provided a comprehensive profile of C. upsaliensis for its genomic features and suggested some pathogenic agents for human infection with this species.

A rapid, simple, effective, and green method for the determination of betaine and trigonelline from Lycium chinense Mill. (LCM) and the quantification of the trigonelline in coffee was proposed and validated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric (MALDI-TOF MS) detection. Due to without chromatographic separation, the method greatly shortened the detection time. The detection of betaine and trigonelline concentration showed good linearity in the range of 1–100 μg/mL and 0.01–100 μg/mL, with correlation coefficients r2 = 0.9962 and 0.9946, respectively. The good reproducibility and reliability of the method were demonstrated by excellent intraday and interday precisions with RSD

The cornea is an avascular tissue in the eye that has multiple functions in the eye to maintain clear vision which can significantly impair one’s vision when subjected to damage. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), a family of nuclear receptor proteins comprising three different peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) isoforms, namely, PPAR alpha (α), PPAR gamma (γ), and PPAR delta (δ), have emerged as potential therapeutic targets for treating corneal diseases. In this review, we summarised the current literature on the therapeutic effects of PPAR agents on corneal diseases. We discussed the role of PPARs in the modulation of corneal wound healing, suppression of corneal inflammation, neovascularisation, fibrosis, stimulation of corneal nerve regeneration, and amelioration of dry eye by inhibiting oxidative stress within the cornea. We also discussed the underlying mechanisms of these therapeutic effects. Future clinical trials are warranted to further attest to the clinical therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract Although zinc‒air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as one of the most prospective energy storage devices, their practical application has been restricted by poor air electrode performance. Herein, we developed a free‐standing air electrode that is fabricated on the basis of a multifunctional three‐dimensional interconnected graphene network. Specifically, a three‐dimensional interconnected graphene network with fast mass and electron transport ability, prepared by catalyzing growth of graphene foam on nickel foam and then filling reduced graphene oxide into the pores of graphene foam, is used to anchor iron phthalocyanine molecules with atomic Fe‒N4 sites for boosting the oxygen reduction during discharging and nanosized FeNi hydroxides for accelerating the oxygen evolution during charging. As a result, the obtained air electrode exhibited an ultra‐small electrocatalytic overpotential of 0.603 V for oxygen reactions, a high peak power density of 220.2 mW cm‒2, and a small and stable charge‒discharge voltage gap of 0.70 V at 10 mA cm‒2 after 1136 cycles. Furthermore, in situ Raman spectroscopy together with theoretical calculations confirmed that phase transformation of FeNi hydroxides takes place from α‐Ni(OH)x to β‐Ni(OH)x to γ‐Ni(3+δ)+OOH for the oxygen evolution reaction and Ni is the active center while Fe enhances the activity of Ni active sites.

Abstract Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Few drugs hold the ability to depress cardiac electrical and structural remodeling simultaneously after MI, which is crucial for the treatment of MI. The aim of this study is to investigate an effective therapy to improve both electrical and structural remodeling of the heart caused by MI. Here, an “ion cocktail therapy” is proposed to simultaneously reverse cardiac structural and electrical remodeling post‐MI in rats and minipigs by applying a unique combination of silicate, strontium (Sr) and copper (Cu) ions due to their specific regulatory effects on the behavior of the key cells involved in MI including angiogenesis of endothelial cells, M2 polarization of macrophages and apoptosis of cardiomyocyte. The results demonstrate that ion cocktail treatment attenuates structural remodeling post‐MI by ameliorating infarct size, promoting angiogenesis in both peri‐infarct and infarct areas. Meantime, to some extent, ion cocktail treatment reverses the deteriorative electrical remodeling by reducing the incidence rate of early/delayed afterdepolarizations and minimizing the heterogeneity of cardiac electrophysiology. This ion cocktail therapy reveals a new strategy to effectively treat MI with great clinical translation potential due to the high effectiveness and safety of the ion cocktail combination.

BackgroundMultiple studies have examined the impact of deferral on the motivation of prospective blood donors, proposing various policies and strategies to support individuals who undergo this experience. However, existing information and communications technology systems focused on blood donation have not yet integrated these ideas or provided options to assist with the deferral experience. ObjectiveThis study aims to propose an initial gamified design aimed at mitigating the impact of the deferral experience by addressing the drivers of awareness and knowledge, interaction and validation, and motivation. Additionally, the study explores the feasibility of implementing such a system for potential users. MethodsWe conducted a literature review focusing on the dynamics of motivation and intention related to blood donation, as well as the deferral situation and its impact on citizens. Through this review, we identified weak donor identity, lack of knowledge, and reduced motivation as key factors requiring support from appropriate interventions. These factors were then defined as our key drivers. Taking these into account, we proposed a gamification approach that incorporates concepts from the MDA framework. The aim is to stimulate the aforementioned drivers and expand the concept of contribution and identity in blood donation. For a preliminary evaluation, we designed a prototype to collect feedback on usability, usefulness, and interest regarding a potential implementation of our proposed gamification approach. ResultsAmong the participants, a total of 11 citizens interacted with the app and provided feedback through our survey. They indicated that interacting with the app was relatively easy, with an average score of 4.13 out of 5 when considering the 11 tasks of interaction. The SUS results yielded a final average score of 70.91 from the participants’ answers. Positive responses were received when participants were asked about liking the concept of the app (3.82), being likely to download it (3.55), and being likely to recommend it to others (3.64). Participants expressed positivity about the implementation of the design but also highlighted current shortcomings and suggested possible improvements in both functionality and usability. ConclusionsAlthough deferral is a common issue in blood donation, there is a missed opportunity in existing ICT services regarding how to effectively handle such experiences. Our proposed design and implementation seem to have captured the interest of prospective users due to its perceived positive usefulness and potential. However, further confirmation is needed. Improving the design of activities that currently rely heavily on extrinsic motivation elements and integrating more social components to create an enhanced activity loop for intrinsic motivation could further increase the value of the proposed project. Future research could involve conducting a more specialized and longitudinal design evaluation with a larger sample size.

Facing the double constraints of the “double carbon” target and high-quality economic development, carbon trading policy is an important tool for realizing the emission reduction commitment; based on the perspective of microenterprises, the specific mechanism and spatial effect of carbon trading policy still need to be evaluated. Taking China’s carbon emissions trading pilot as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper empirically investigates the impact of carbon trading policy on the carbon emission intensity of pilot enterprises and its mechanism of action, and its impact on the carbon emission intensity of neighboring enterprises, based on the multi-temporal double-difference model, moderating effect model, and spatial Durbin model with the A-share-listed enterprises in the period of 2009–2019 as the samples. It is found that: 1) Carbon trading policy will reduce the carbon emission intensity of enterprises to different degrees, and there are significant differences under different ownership types, degrees of marketization and the level of digitization. 2) Under the influence of environmental uncertainty, ESG disclosure will weaken the effectiveness of carbon emission reduction in the pre-pilot stage of the policy; with the gradual improvement of the carbon trading policy and ESG disclosure mechanism, ESG ratings will positively regulate the inhibitory effect of the carbon trading policy on the carbon emission intensity of enterprises through multiple paths. 3) Carbon trading policy effectively reduces multiple negative spillovers through the demonstration effect and competition effect of neighboring enterprises, driving the carbon emission reduction behavior of non-pilot enterprise. The research in this paper enriches the research paradigm of carbon emission intensity influencing factors, provides reference suggestions for the government to improve its policies, and better contributes to the realization of the “dual-carbon” vision in China as soon as possible.

Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is crucial in plant physiology and ecological research. Although several LCC products have recently been generated at a regional or global scale, understanding their accuracy is still a concern in the scientific community. We intercompared and analyzed five existing LCC products (MuSyQ LCC, MODIS LCC, MERIS LCC, GLCC, and GLOBMAP MERIS LCC) over China in terms of spatial continuity and spatiotemporal consistency over seven plant functional types. The products of 2011 and 2019 over China were used in this study. Research findings indicate (1) the 30 m-resolution MuSyQ LCC has the highest accuracy compared to field LCC of cropland and grassland types, with an RMSE of 19.5 μg/cm2, while MODIS LCC product demonstrates a more robust fit to the measured LCC, with an R2 of 0.341. (2) Interpolation of products with lower spatial resolution e.g. MODIS LCC, MERIS LCC, and GLOBMAP MERIS LCC, generally improves spatial continuity. The non-interpolated 30 m MuSyQ LCC exhibits good regional continuity due to its high spatial resolution. The lowest spatial continuity is found over shrubs for all products. (3) MODIS LCC and MuSyQ LCC of 2019 demonstrate high overall spatial consistency and exhibit the highest correlation over cropland sites. MODIS LCC and GLOBMAP MERIS LCC of 2011 demonstrate high temporal consistency over deciduous forests, evergreen forests, grasslands, and shrubs sites. The most robust overall temporal consistency is exhibited among all products in the deciduous needleleaved forest, followed by evergreen needleleaved forest and grassland. The findings of this research are essential for improving leaf chlorophyll content inversion algorithms and for understanding and better use of LCC products in land surface models.
