It has been reported that Arabidopsis chloroplast accD transcripts undergo RNA editing and that loss of accD-C794 RNA editing does not affect plant growth under normal conditions. To date, the exact biological role of accD-C794 editing has remained elusive. Here, we reveal an unexpected role for accD-C794 editing in response to heat stress. Loss of accD-C794 editing results in a yellow and dwarf phenotype with decreased chloroplast gene expression under heat stress, and artificial improvement of C794-edited accD gene expression enhances heat tolerance in Arabidopsis. These data suggest that accD-C794 editing confers heat tolerance in planta. We also found that treatment with the product of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) could allay mutant phenotypic characteristics and showed that a mutation in the CAC3 gene for the α-subunit of ACCase was associated with dwarfism under heat stress. These observations indicate that defective accD-C794 editing may be intrinsic to reduced ACCase activity, thereby contributing to heat sensitivity. ACCase catalyzes the committed step of de novo fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis. FA content analysis revealed that unsaturated oleic (C18:1) and linoleic acids (C18:2) were low in the accD-C794 editing-defective mutant but high in the C794-edited accD-overexpressing plants compared with the wild type. Supplying exogenous C18:1 and C18:2 could rescue the mutant phenotype, suggesting that these FAs play an essential role in tolerance to heat stress. Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that heat stress seriously affected the membrane architecture in accD editing-defective mutants but not in accD-overexpressing plants. These results provide the first evidence that accD-C794 editing regulates FA biosynthesis for maintenance of membrane structural homeostasis under heat stress.

Background: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common and disruptive complication following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The aim of this study is to investigate whether doxazosin can decrease the incidence of POUR and promote recovery under the setting of modern enhanced recovery after TJA.Methods: In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, patients over 35 years of age undergoing primary unilateral TJA were recruited. Patients received doxazosin (4 mg once) or placebo 2 h before surgery. The primary outcome of interest was the development of POUR, which was diagnosed when patients with a urine volume over 400 ml or overflow incontinence. Postoperative recovery was assessed in terms of hospital length of stay after surgery, daily ambulation distance, visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score and opioid consumption.Results: A total of 170 male patients were equally randomized into Doxazosin group (mean age 54.2 ± 13.7 years, range 36–88 years) and Placebo group (mean age 54.6 ± 13.9 years, range 38–81 years). The POUR rate was significant lower in Doxazosin group (17.6%) than in Placebo group (36.5%) (p = .006). The mean LOS in the Doxazosin group was 3.1 ± 1.1 days compared to 3.6 ± 1.7 days in the Placebo group (p = .030). Doxazosin group had a longer daily mobilization distance than Placebo group on postoperative day 1 (26.8 ± 11.1 vs. 22.8 ± 9.7; p = .015). Postoperative pain assessed by VAS score and opioid usage was comparable between two groups.Conclusion: Our results support the routine use of prophylactic doxazosin in male patients to decrease POUR rate and promote postoperative recovery under the setting of modern enhanced recovery after TJA.

BackgroundThe status of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) is particularly important for the formulation of clinical treatment. The purpose of this study was to construct a nomogram to predict the risk of LNM in EGC before operation.MethodsUnivariate analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the independent risk factors for LNM. The independent risk factors were included in the nomogram, and the prediction accuracy, discriminant ability and clinical practicability of the nomogram were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), calibration curve and clinical decision curve (DCA), and 100 times ten-fold cross-validation was used for internal validation.Results33 (11.3%) cases of AGC were pathologically confirmed as LNM. In multivariate analysis, T stage, presence of enlarged lymph nodes on CT examination, carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199), undifferentiated histological type and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) were risk factors for LNM. The area under the ROC curve of the nomogram was 0.86, the average area under the ROC curve of the 100-fold ten-fold cross-validation was 0.85, and the P value of the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was 0.60. In addition, the clinical decision curve, net reclassification index (NRI) and Integrated Discriminant Improvement Index (IDI) showed that the nomogram had good clinical utility.ConclusionsWe found that SIRI is a novel biomarker for preoperative prediction of LNM in EGC, and constructed a nomogram for preoperative prediction of the risk of LNM in EGC, which is helpful for the formulation of the clinical treatment strategies.

Titanium alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) often suffer from limited ductility because of the inherent acicular α′ martensite embedded in the columnar parent phase grains (prior-β grains). The post-built heat treatment at a relatively high temperature (∼1075 K) necessary for decomposing martensite results in improved ductility at the cost of strength. It, however, remains difficult to achieve balances between strength and ductility in as-printed conditions due to the huge range of possible compositions of printing process variables. Herein, using LPBF-processed Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloy as an example, we demonstrate that machine learning (ML) is capable of accelerating the discovery of the proper sets of processing parameters resulting in a superior synergy of strength and ductility (i.e., yield strength, Ys0.2 = 1044 ± 10 MPa, uniform elongation, UEL = 10.5 ± 1.2 % and total elongation = 15 ± 1.5 %). Such property improvement is found to be enabled by an unique refined prior-β grains decorated by confined α′-colony precipitates. In particular, the uniform deformation ability of α′ martensite is improved due to the enhanced microstructure uniformity achieved by weakening variant selection. ML-based processing parameter optimization approach is thus well-positioned to accelerate the qualification of a wide range of l-PBF manufactured alloys beyond Ti-alloys.

Ferric citrate (FC) has been used as an iron fortifier and nutritional supplement, which is reported to induce colitis in rats, however the underlying mechanism remains to be elucidated. We performed a 16-week study of FC in male healthy C57BL/6 mice (nine-month-old) with oral administration of Ctr (0.9 % NaCl), 1.25 % FC (71 mg/kg/bw), 2.5 % FC (143 mg/kg/bw) and 5 % FC (286 mg/kg/bw). FC-exposure resulted in colon iron accumulation, histological alteration and reduce antioxidant enzyme activities, such as glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), together with enhanced lipid peroxidation level, including malondialdehyde (MDA) level and 4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) protein expression. Exposure to FC was associated with upregulated levels of the interleukin (IL)− 6, IL-1β, IL-18, IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), while down-regulated levels of IL-4 and IL-10. Exposure to FC was positively associated with the mRNA and protein expressions of cysteine-aspartic proteases (Caspase)− 9, Caspase-3, Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), while negatively associated with B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2) in mitochondrial apoptosis signaling pathway. FC-exposure changed the diversity and composition of gut microbes. Additionally, the serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contents increased in FC-exposed groups when compared with the control group, while the expression of colonic tight junction proteins (TJPs), such as Claudin-1 and Occludin were decreased. These findings indicate that the colonic mucosal injury induced by FC-exposure are associated with oxidative stress generation, inflammation response and cell apoptosis, as well as the changes in gut microbes diversity and composition.

Abstract Background To explore the differences between endolymphatic duct blockage, endolymphatic sac drainage and endolymphatic sac decompression surgery in the reversal of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) in patients with intractable Meniere’s disease (MD). Methods A total of 27 MD patients receiving endolymphatic duct blockage surgery (n = 10), endolymphatic sac drainage surgery (n = 9) and endolymphatic sac decompression surgery (n = 8) underwent gadolinium-enhanced inner ear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans prior to, 2 weeks after and at > 12 months following surgery. Results In the group with endolymphatic duct blockage, the second MRI revealed no changes in EH, whereas the third MRI revealed a reversal of vestibular EH in 3 patients and a downgrading of cochlear hydrops in 2 of these 3 patients, who presented with an improvement in their hearing and complete control of vertigo. In the group with endolymphatic sac drainage, the second MRI showed a reversal of EH in 4 patients, and no changes in EH in the remaining 5 patients, whereas the third MRI showed that those 4 patients who presented with a reversal of EH at the second MRI stage remained unchanged except a recurrence of vestibular hydrops in 1 patient. All 4 patients exhibited a complete control of vertigo, but hearing improved in 1, worsened in 1 and remained unchanged in 2. In the group with endolymphatic sac decompression, both the second and third MRI examination revealed no reversal of EH. Conclusions The present study has shown that both endolymphatic duct blockage surgery and endolymphatic sac drainage surgery have the potential to reduce EH in certain MD patients, but none of the patients receiving endolymphatic sac decompression surgery showed reversal of their EH. Lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs) are widely deemed as the most promising energy storage devices to substitute for traditional Li-ion batteries. However, its wide application is impeded by the soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), which is called the shuttle effect, and the irregular distribution of final product Li2S. Herein, based on the interfaces engineering, CoOCo4N hetero-nanocages are used as the sulfur host for LiSBs. Taking advantage of the polarity of CoO with the conductivity of Co4N, CoOCo4N nanocages not only can provide large void space for sulfur volume fluctuation, but also can adsorb polysulfides and simultaneously regulate the nucleation of solid Li2S by the ‘trapping-diffusion-conversion’ mechanism, which significantly enhances the redox kinetic of LiSBs and the utilization of active materials. Eventually, LiSBs with CoOCo4N nanocages host exhibit higher rate capacity (737 mAh·g−1 at 2 C) and cycling stability (662 mAh·g−1 at 1 C after 350 cycles). Even when the areal sulfur loading is as high as 3.0 mg cm−2, a high capacity of 713 mAh·g−1 can still be achieved after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. This host with sufficient polar-conductive interfaces expands ‘trapping-diffusion-conversion’ concept for the design of fast kinetic and high performance LSBs.

Using silicate fertilizer and bacterial inoculum as biofertilizer is significant for increasing soil silicon (Si) availability and rice agronomic performance. To use microbial technology for sustainable agriculture, it is crucial to have a deeper knowledge of how microbial populations shift among the plant hosts and related compartments, as well as how they respond to various fertilization models. In this study, the effects of silicate fertilizer, a single bacterial strain Bacillus mucilagniosis as biofertilizer, and their integrated application on soil physiochemical properties and soil microbiota structure, composition, and diversity in two eco-geographically diverse races (Indica and Japonica rice) were evaluated. Plant compartment, cultivar type, and fertilizer treatments contributed to microbiome variation. Indica and Japonica harbor different root microbiota; notably, taxa enriched in the rhizosphere soil were more diverse than in the root. Bacterial genera Leptonema, Azospira, Aquabacterium, Fluviicola, Aquabacterium, Leptonema, and fungal genera Metarhizium, Malassezia, and Cladosporium all were found in the rice core microbiome. Both silicate and biofertilizer applications increase the relative abundance of Betaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, while suppressing fungal pathogens Alternaria and Fusarium. Silicate and bacterial inoculum applications increased the soil pH, available silicon content (ASi), available phosphorous (AP), available potassium (AK), and organic carbon (OC), while reduced the total nitrogen (N). These changes were also associated with major bacterial phyla Spirochaetes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria, except for Acidobacteria, and fungal phyla Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota and unassigned fungi. Several treatment-specific biomarkers were revealed through Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis. In conclusion, the change in the structure of root-associated communities driven by plant compartment and genetics suggests dynamic interactions in the host plant microbiome. Short-term silicate and biofertilizer amendments improved soil physiochemical status and altered bacterial and saprotrophic fungal communities, which have important implications for sustainable rice production.

Abstract Background Targeting tumor microenvironment (TME) may provide therapeutic activity and selectivity in treating cancers. Therefore, an improved understanding of the mechanism by which drug targeting TME would enable more informed and effective treatment measures. Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch (GUF, licorice), a widely used herb medicine, has shown promising immunomodulatory activity and anti-tumor activity. However, the molecular mechanism of this biological activity has not been fully elaborated. Methods Here, potential active compounds and specific targets of licorice that trigger the antitumor immunity were predicted with a systems pharmacology strategy. Flow cytometry technique was used to detect cell cycle profile and CD8+ T cell infiltration of licorice treatment. And anti-tumor activity of licorice was evaluated in the C57BL/6 mice. Results We reported the G0/G1 growth phase cycle arrest of tumor cells induced by licorice is related to the down-regulation of CDK4-Cyclin D1 complex, which subsequently led to an increased protein abundance of PD-L1. Further, in vivo studies demonstrated that mitigating the outgrowth of NSCLC tumor induced by licorice was reliant on increased antigen presentation and improved CD8+ T cell infiltration. Conclusions Briefly, our findings improved the understanding of the anti-tumor effects of licorice with the systems pharmacology strategy, thereby promoting the development of natural products in prevention or treatment of cancers.

To expand agricultural business and upgrade the effects of product marketing, supported by the concept of smart agricultural, this paper introduces us the methods to undertake agricultural business promotion and build up product marketing system in combination with big data technology and machine learning technology, put forward the application of fuzzy c-means algorithm in the agricultural marketing data. The algorithm is a clustering algorithm that uses degree of membership function to determine which cluster each data point belongs to; thus to build up a basic model of smart agriculture based on actual situation, and integrate the agricultural business promotion and agricultural products marketing, as important function modules, into the agricultural products marketing system; and then the process of this system is analysed before the frame of the overall system is shaped; based on which, system performance verification is conducted by designed test. From the research, the agricultural business promotion and products marketing system based on smart agriculture have some positive effect.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common problem in the diabetic patients due to the high blood glucose level. DR affects more number of diabetic patients worldwide with irreversible vision loss. Objective: The current investigation was focused to reveal the therapeutic actions of nimbolide against the streptozotocin (STZ)-provoked DR in rats through inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB pathway. Methodology: DR was provoked to the rats through administering a single dose of STZ (60 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. The DR rats were then supplemented with the 50 mg/kg of nimbolide for 60 days. The bodyweight and blood glucose level was measured using standard methods. The lipid profiles (cholesterol, TG, LDL, and HDL), inflammatory markers, and antioxidants level was detected using respective kits. The level of MCP-1, VEGF, and MMP-9 was quantified using kits. The morphometric analysis of retinal tissues were done. The mRNA expressions of target genes were studied using RT-PCR assay. Results: Nimbolide treatment effective decreased the food intake and blood glucose, and improved the bodyweight of STZ-provoked animals. The levels of pro-inflammatory mediators, cholesterol, TG, LDL, and HDL, MCP-1, VEGF, and MMP-9 was remarkably suppressed by the nimbolide treatment. Nimbolide also improved the antioxidants, retinal thickness and cell numbers. The TLR4/NF-κB pathway was appreciably inhibited by the nimbolide. Conclusion: Overall, our findings demonstrated that the nimbolide attenuated the STZ-provoked DR in rats through inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB pathway.

BackgroundSince the global epidemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a large number of immunological studies related to COVID-19 have been published in various immunology journals. However, the results from these studies were discrete, and no study summarized the important immunological information about COVID-19 released by these immunology journals. This study aimed to comprehensively summarize the knowledge structure and research hotspots of COVID-19 published in major immunology journals through bibliometrics.MethodsPublications on COVID-19 in major immunology journals were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R-bibliometrix were comprehensively used for bibliometric and visual analysis.Results1,331 and 5,000 publications of 10 journals with high impact factors and 10 journals with the most papers were included, respectively. The USA, China, England, and Italy made the most significant contributions to these papers. University College London, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Harvard Medical School, University California San Diego, and University of Pennsylvania played a central role in international cooperation in the immunology research field of COVID-19. Yuen Kwok Yung was the most important author in terms of the number of publications and citations, and the H-index. CLINICAL INFECTIOUS DISEASES and FRONTIERS IN IMMUNOLOGY were the most essential immunology journals. These immunology journals mostly focused on the following topics: “Delta/Omicron variants”, “cytokine storm”, “neutralization/neutralizing antibody”, “T cell”, “BNT162b2”, “mRNA vaccine”, “vaccine effectiveness/safety”, and “long COVID”.ConclusionThis study systematically uncovered a holistic picture of the current research on COVID-19 published in major immunology journals from the perspective of bibliometrics, which will provide a reference for future research in this field.

Brachial plexus avulsion (BPA), which commonly occurs in neonatal birth injuries and car accidents, severely disrupts spinal cord segments and nerve roots. Avulsion is usually located in the transitional zone at the junction of spinal nerve roots and starting point of the spinal cord, which places heavy disability burdens on patients due to sensory and motor function loss in the innervated areas. Primary mechanical injuries and secondary pathogenesis, such as inflammatory infiltration and oxidative stress, lead to inefficient management and poor prognosis. Astaxanthin (AST) has a strong ability to bleach singlet oxygen and capture free radicals, quench singlet oxygen and trap free radicals, and folic acid (FC) can effectively inhibit the inflammatory response. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of AST and FC on BPA. The 24 h after BPA was considered the acute phase of the injury, and the combination of AST and FC had the best therapeutic effect due to the synergistic effect of AST’s antioxidant and FC’s anti-inflammatory properties. At 6 weeks after BPA, AST-FC promoted the recovery of biceps motor functions, increased myofiber diameter, enlarged the amplitude of musculocutaneous nerve-biceps compound action potential, and improved Terzis grooming test (TGT) scores. Meanwhile, more functional ventral horn motor neurons in the spinal cord were maintained. In conclusion, AST-FC combined therapy has a potential role in the clinical management of BPA since it can effectively alleviate oxidative stress and the inflammatory response in the acute phase of BPA, increase the survival rate of neurons, and promote neuronal regeneration and recovery of motor functions in the late stage of BPA.

Background: Nano drug delivery system (NDDS) can significantly improve the delivery and efficacy of drugs against pancreatic cancer (PC) in many ways. The purpose of this study is to explore the related research fields of NDDS for PC from the perspective of bibliometrics.Methods: Articles and reviews on NDDS for PC published between 2003 and 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R-bibliometrix, and Microsoft Excel were comprehensively used for bibliometric and visual analysis.Results: A total of 1329 papers on NDDS for PC were included. The number of papers showed an upward trend over the past 20 years. The United States contributed the most papers, followed by China, and India. Also, the United States had the highest number of total citations and H-index. The institution with the most papers was Chinese Acad Sci, which was also the most important in international institutional cooperation. Professors Couvreur P and Kazuoka K made great achievements in this field. JOURNAL OF CONTROLLED RELEASE published the most papers and was cited the most. The topics related to the tumor microenvironment such as “tumor microenvironment”, “tumor penetration”, “hypoxia”, “exosome”, and “autophagy”, PC treatment-related topics such as “immunotherapy”, “combination therapy”, “alternating magnetic field/magnetic hyperthermia”, and “ultrasound”, and gene therapy dominated by “siRNA” and “miRNA” were the research hotspots in the field of NDDS for PC.Conclusion: This study systematically uncovered a holistic picture of the performance of NDDS for PC-related literature over the past 20 years. We provided scholars to understand key information in this field with the perspective of bibliometrics, which we believe may greatly facilitate future research in this field.

At present, there is no effective experimental method for detecting whether the suid herpesvirus 1 (SHV-1) detected in pigs is infectious. Although the technique of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) has significantly improved the detection rate and accuracy of the disease, it does not differentiate between infective and non-infective status of the virus. Propidium monoazide (PMA) is a dye that can be combined with DNA molecules. The decomposition of PMA produces an azene compound covalently crosslinked with DNA molecules, thereby inhibiting PCR amplification of DNA. In this study, the combination of PMA and qPCR was used to determine the infectivity of SHV-1. We optimized the method from the selection of primers, the working concentration of PMA, and the method of inactivation using UV or heat inactivation. We found that when specific primer 1 was used and a PMA working concentration was 50–100 μM, heat inactivation was able to distinguish whether SHV-1 was infectious or not. We also showed that UV prevented the virus from replicating, it did not destroy the capsid of the virus, and therefore, PMA cannot enter the virus and bind to the nucleic acid of the virus. Consequently, there is no way to identify the infectivity of the virus using UV inactivation. The study showed that the method was stable and the detection rate reached 96%. In conclusion, this method exhibited strong specificity and high sensitivity and can identify the infectivity of SHV-1. This method has practical significance for clinical virus isolation and the effects of disinfection of farms.

This work aims to develop a novel Co16X6Si7-G (X = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Tc, Re) phase strengthened ferritic steel with the help of first-principles calculations. Ddensity function theory calculation results demonstrated that the Co16X6Si7-G phase possesses the advantage of good thermodynamic stability and low misfit with the ferritic matrix. On the basis of calculation, we successfully prepared three model alloys, i.e., the Fe20Cr5Co2Si1Ti, Fe20Cr5Co2Si0.75Nb and Fe20Cr5Co2Si1.5Ta (wt.%), who make a good trade-off between strength, ductility and good oxidation/corrosion resistance. Our observation verified that the Co16X6Si7-G phase can precipitate within 1 h with proper heat treatment, showing a cube-on-cube orientation relationship with its parent matrix. The introduction of G phase precipitates amazingly increases the micro-hardness of model alloys by ∼ 160 HV after aging at 873 K. And the precipitates within the ferrite phase have not been observed to grow coarser even after 96 hrs aging treatment. Furthermore, excellent mechanical properties of ∼ 1.2 GPa tensile strength and ∼ 10 % total elongation have been achieved after 6 hrs aging time at 873 K. These findings indicate the Co16X6Si7-G phase would be a promising candidate as a strengthening medium and provide valuable insight into the screen of precipitates for the development of high-strength and ductile steels.

Sinomenine is a natural compound extracted from the medicinal plant Sinomenium acutum. Its supplementation has been shown to present benefits in a variety of animal models of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, such as cerebral ischemia, intracerebral hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), epilepsy, depression, multiple sclerosis, morphine tolerance, and glioma. Therefore, sinomenine is now considered a potential agent for the prevention and/or treatment of CNS disorders. Mechanistic studies have shown that inhibition of oxidative stress, microglia- or astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation, and neuronal apoptosis are common mechanisms for the neuroprotective effects of sinomenine. Other mechanisms, including activation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), induction of autophagy in response to inhibition of protein kinase B (Akt)-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and activation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate-response element-binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), may also mediate the anti-glioma and neuroprotective effects of sinomenine. Sinomenine treatment has also been shown to enhance dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2)-mediated nuclear translocation of αB-crystallin (CRYAB) in astrocytes, thereby suppressing neuroinflammation via inhibition of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3). In addition, sinomenine supplementation can suppress N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated Ca2+ influx and induce γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor-mediated Cl− influx, each of which contributes to the improvement of morphine dependence and sleep disturbance. In this review, we outline the pharmacological effects and possible mechanisms of sinomenine in CNS disorders to advance the development of sinomenine as a new drug for the treatment of CNS disorders.

In this work, a series of novel γ' phase strengthened Ti6Al6-based HEAs with six kinds of alloying elements (including Nb, Hf, Ta, W, Mo, and V) were carefully examined combined with TEM, SEM, XRD, and DSC technologies. The impurities Fe2X (X = Nb, Hf, and Ta) Laves were detected in the Nb-, Hf- and Ta-doping alloys while the other three present a perfect (γ + γ') dual-phase microstructures. And the W-, Mo- and V-doping HEAs possess a much better strength-plasticity combination than the Ti6Al6 alloy at room- and high-temperature. The 1.5 W HEA has a tensile strength of ∼ 1300 MPa and good plasticity (>30 %) at room temperature. In the meantime, it also performs much good at 800 °C (∼11 % elongation and the tensile strength of ∼ 750 MPa). The addition of W, Mo, and V elements causes the main peak of the HEAs to shift to the left to varying degrees, among which the biggest shift is 1.5 V HEA, followed by 1.5Mo HEA, the smaller is the 1.5 W HEA. At the same time, the γ' precipitates phase of the alloy has a highly coherent relationship with the FCC matrix phase, which ensures that the strength of the alloy is increased without sacrificing its plasticity.

One purified neutral polysaccharide fraction was obtained from the rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum by DEAE ion exchange and gel chromatography. Structure elucidation was performed by methanolysis, methylation, FT-IR, and NMR. The results indicated that PSP-NP was composed of 1,4-β-D-Gal,1, 4, 6-β-D-Gal, T-α-D-Man,1, 4-α-D-Glc, and T-α-D-Glc with a molecular weight of 43.0 kDa. We supplied this polysaccharide to aged mice and found it is of benefits to intestinal functions, as indicated by better tissue integrity and motility, improved oxidative stress and inflammation, reduced intestinal permeability and serum LPS level, as well as balanced gut microbial composition and short-chain fatty acids production. These results display a novel Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharide to improve the intestinal function of aged mice, which provides pieces of evidence for its further development and utilization.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) face a high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. However, traditional hypoglycemic drugs have limited effects on macrovascular complications of the disease. Clinical trials have confirmed that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), in addition to their capability of controlling blood glucose, can also decrease the risk of cardiovascular events in T2DM. The protective influence of GLP-1RAs on coronary heart disease and heart failure has been proven in recent clinical studies. Therefore, the international guidelines recommend GLP-1 RAs as the first-line therapy for patients with T2DM having cardiovascular disease. Notwithstanding the widespread clinical application of GLP-1RAs, the underlying mechanisms through which GLP-1RAs exert cardiovascular benefits in patients with DM remain unclear. In this review, we systematically summarize the mechanisms of action of GLP-1RAs responsible for producing favorable effects on the cardiovascular system, beyond their capability of blood glucose regulation. GLP-1RA-mediated cardiovascular protection is manifested through multiple mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, apoptosis, and vascular/cardiac remodeling. The understanding of these mechanisms will facilitate the development of new and promising therapeutic modalities for T2DM. Furthermore, we have identified several promising targets for future research in this area.

Background The presence of alveolar epithelial type II cells (AECIIs) is one of the most important causes of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Exosomes from bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can reduce hyperoxia-induced damage and provide better results in terms of alveolar and pulmonary vascularization parameters than BMSCs. Currently, intervention studies using BMSC-derived exosomes on the signaling pathways regulating proliferation and apoptosis of alveolar epithelial cells under the condition of BPD have not been reported. This study investigated the effects of rat BMSC-derived exosomes on the proliferation and apoptosis of hyperoxia-induced primary AECIIs in vitro. Methods The isolated AECIIs were grouped as follows: normal control (21% oxygen), hyperoxia (85% oxygen), hyperoxia+exosome (20 µg/mL), hyperoxia+exosome+LY294002 (PI3K/Akt inhibitor, 20 µM), and hyperoxia+exosome+rapamycin (mTOR inhibitor, 5 nM). We used the PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002 and the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin to determine the roles of the PI3K/Akt and mTOR signaling pathways. The effects of BMSC-derived exosomes on AECII proliferation and apoptosis were assessed, respectively. Results Decreased levels of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2, the cell proliferation protein Ki67, p-PI3K, p-Akt, and p-mTOR, as well as increased levels of AECII apoptosis and the proapoptotic protein Bax in the hyperoxia group were observed. Notably, Sprague Dawley rat BMSC-derived exosomes could reverse the effect of hyperoxia on AECII proliferation. However, the application of LY294002 and rapamycin inhibited the protective effects of BMSC-derived exosomes. Conclusion Our findings revealed that BMSC-derived exosomes could regulate the expression of apoptosis-related proteins likely via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, thereby preventing hyperoxia-induced AECII apoptosis.

AbstractTo better understand the environmental significance of sediment grain size in continental shelf of the South China Sea (SCS), we carried out a detailed grain size study of sediments from the YJ Core, derived from the mud deposits of the northern SCS. Based on the grain size-standard deviation method, two sensitive grain size components were identified, namely, component 1 (8.2 ~ 9.3 μm) and component 2 (106.8 ~ 120.7 μm), respectively. The results indicate that the sensitive component 1 is likely to derive from fine-grained materials of the Pearl River. These fine-grained materials could be transported by the southwestward coastal current during the wet season, with the domination of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Accordingly, the sensitive component 1 could be sensitive to climate change and has a great potential to reconstruct details of EASM variations. During the period of 7500-6800 cal yr BP, the sensitive component 1 may be controlled by both sea level change and EASM intensity. Besides, the curve of the sensitive component 1 in the YJ Core presents a strong EASM during the interval 6800-3500 cal yr BP and a weak EASM during the period of 3500-2000 cal yr BP, which is synchronous with other paleoclimate records in southern China. In the past 2000 years, the sensitive component 1 may reflect the increasing of human activities. It is essential to carry out more studies with higher resolution in mud areas to clarify a detailed historical evolution of EASM intensity over the whole Holocene.

In this study, three acidic polysaccharides from different plant parts of Codonopsis pilosula var. Modesta (Nannf.) L. T. Shen were obtained by ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration chromatography, and the yields of these three polysaccharides were different. According to the preliminary experimental results, the antioxidant activities of the polysaccharides from rhizomes and fibrous roots (CLFP-1) were poor, and was thus not studied further. Due to this the structural features of polysaccharides from roots (CLRP-1) and aerial parts (CLSP-1) were the object for this study and were structurally characterized, and their antioxidant activities were evaluated. As revealed by the results, the molecular weight of CLRP-1and CLSP-1 were 15.9 kDa and 26.4 kDa, respectively. The monosaccharide composition of CLRP-1 was Ara, Rha, Fuc, Xyl, Man, Gal, GlcA, GalA in a ratio of 3.8: 8.4: 1.0: 0.8: 2.4: 7.4: 7.5: 2.0: 66.7, and Ara, Rha, Gal, GalA in a ratio of 5.8: 8.9: 8.0: 77.0 in for CLSP-1. The results of structural elucidation indicated that both CLRP-1 and CLSP-1 were pectic polysaccharides, mainly composed of 1, 4-linked galacturonic acid with long homogalacturonan regions. Arabinogalactan type I and arabinogalactan type II were presented as side chains. The antioxidant assay in IPEC-J2 cells showed that both CLRP-1 and CLSP-1 promoted cell viability and antioxidant activity, which significantly increase the level of total antioxidant capacity and the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and decrease the content of malondialdehyde. Moreover, CLRP-1 and CLSP-1 also showed powerful antioxidant abilities in Caenorhabditis elegans and might regulate the nuclear localization of DAF-16 transcription factor, induced antioxidant enzymes activities, and further reduced reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde contents to increase the antioxidant ability of Caenorhabditis elegans. Thus, these finding suggest that CLRP-1 and CLSP-1 could be used as potential antioxidants.

BackgroundThe past decade has witnessed an improvement in survival rates for breast cancer, with significant inroads achieved in diagnosis and treatment approaches. Even though chemotherapy is effective for this patient population, cardiotoxicity remains a major challenge, especially in older people. It has been established that cardiovascular events are a major cause of death in older female primary breast cancer patients that underwent chemotherapy. In the present study, the independent prognostic factors were identified to develop a novel nomogram for predicting long-term heart disease-specific survival (HDSS) and improving patient management.MethodOlder female primary breast cancer patients that underwent chemotherapy from 2010 to 2015 were retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and randomly assigned to a training cohort and a validation cohort at a ratio of 7:3. HDSS was the primary endpoint of this study. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted on the training cohort to identify independent prognostic factors of HDSS and construct a nomogram to predict the 5- and 8-year HDSS. The performance of the constructed nomogram was evaluated by calibration curve, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and decision curve analyses. Finally, a risk classification system was constructed to assist in patient management.ResultA total of 16,340 patients were included in this study. Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified six independent prognostic factors: age, race, tumor stage, marital status, surgery, and radiotherapy. A nomogram based on these six factors yielded excellent performance, with areas under the curve of the ROC for 5- and 8-year HDSS of 0.759 and 0.727 in the training cohort and 0.718 and 0.747 in the validation cohort. Moreover, the established risk classification system could effectively identify patients at low-, middle-, and high- risk of heart disease-associated death and achieve targeted management.ConclusionIndependent prognostic factors of HDSS in older female primary breast cancer patients that underwent chemotherapy were determined in this study. A novel nomogram for predicting 5- and 8-year HDSS in this patient population was also established and validated to help physicians during clinical decision-making and screen high-risk patients to improve outcomes.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common malignancy of the mucosal epithelium of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma are common HNSCC subtypes. Patients with metastatic HNSCC have a poor prognosis. Therefore, identifying molecular markers for the development and progression of HNSCC is essential for improving early diagnosis and predicting patient outcomes.Methods: Gene expression RNA-Seq data and patient clinical traits were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (TCGA-HNSC) and Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Differentially expressed gene (DEG) screening was performed using the TCGA-HNSC dataset. Intersection analysis between the DEGs and a list of core matrisome genes obtained from the Matrisome Project was used to identify differentially expressed matrisome genes. A prognostic model was established using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, least absolute shrinkage, and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis. Immune landscape analysis was performed based on the single-sample gene set enrichment analysis algorithm, Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, prognostic value, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and gene mutation analyses. Immunohistochemical results regarding prognostic protein levels were obtained from the Human Protein Atlas. Single-gene RNA-sequencing data were obtained from GSE150321 and GSE172577 datasets. CCK-8 and Transwell assays were used to confirm cell proliferation and migration.Results: A total of 1,779 DEGs, including 939 upregulated and 840 downregulated genes, between tumor and normal samples were identified using the TCGA-HNSC microarray data. Intersection analysis revealed 52 differentially expressed matrisome-related genes. After performing univariate and multivariate Cox regression and LASSO analyses, a novel prognostic model based on six matrisome genes (FN1, LAMB4, LAMB3, DMP1, CHAD, and MMRN1) for HNSCC was established. This risk model can successfully predict HNSCC survival. The high-risk group had worse prognoses and higher enrichment of pathways related to cancer development than the low-risk group. Silencing LAMB4 in HNSCC cell lines promoted cell proliferation and migration.Conclusion: This study provides a novel prognostic model for HNSCC. Thus, FN1, LAMB4, LAMB3, DMP1, CHAD, and MMRN1 may be the promising biomarkers for clinical practice.

Paeoniflorin, a terpenoid glycoside compound extracted from Paeonia lactiflora Pall, shows preventive and therapeutic effects in various types of nervous system disorders. However, to date, no comprehensive knowledge on the pharmacological effects of paeoniflorin on the nervous system is available online. Clarification of this issue may be useful for the development of paeoniflorin as a new drug for the treatment of nervous system disorders. To this end, the authors summarize the pharmacological aspects of paeoniflorin and its possible mechanisms, such as restoration of mitochondrial function; inhibition of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular apoptosis; activation of adenosine A1 receptor, cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2); or enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and serotonin function, in the prevention of disorders such as cerebral ischemia, subarachnoid hemorrhage, vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression, post-traumatic syndrome disorder, and epilepsy, by reviewing the previously published literature.

Chronic exposure of human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) causes malignant cell transformation. These transformed cells exhibit increases in migration and invasion. Neuronal precursor of developmentally downregulated protein 9 (NEDD9) is upregulated in Cr(VI)-transformed cells compared to that of passage-matched normal BEAS-2B cells. Knockdown of NEDD9 by its shRNA reduced invasion and migration of Cr(VI)-transformed cells. Maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3), a long noncoding RNA, was lost and microRNA 145 (miR-145) was upregulated in Cr(VI)-transformed cells. MEG3 was bound to miR-145 and this binding reduced its activity. Overexpression of MEG3 or inhibition of miR-145 decreased invasion and migration of Cr(VI)-transformed cells. Overexpression of MEG3 was able to decrease miR-145 level and NEDD9 protein level in Cr(VI)-transformed cells. Ectopic expression of MEG3 was also shown to reduce β-catenin activation. Inhibition of miR-145 in Cr(VI)-transformed cells decreased Slug, an important transcription factor that regulates epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Inhibition of miR-145 was found to increase MEG3 in Cr(VI)-transformed cells. Further studies showed that mutation of MEG3 at the binding site for miR-145 did not change NEDD9 and failed to decrease invasion and migration. The present study demonstrated that loss of MEG3 and upregulation of miR-145 elevated NEDD9, resulting in activation of β-catenin and further upregulation of EMT, leading to increased invasion and migration of Cr(VI)-transformed cells.

Neuron-derived orphan receptor 1 (NOR1), also called nuclear receptor subfamily 4 group A member 3 (NR4A3), is a nuclear receptor belonging to the NR4A family. Since no endogenous ligand has been identified to date, NOR1 is also referred to as an orphan receptor. NOR1 is expressed in a variety of cells and tissues, including neurons, vascular smooth muscle cells, T lymphocytes, dendritic cells, tumor cells, heart, liver, and pancreas. Because NOR1 was first identified in apoptotic neurons, it is functionally associated with the regulation of cell migration and the growth of neuronal synapses. In-depth studies have shown that NOR1 can be edited by the immediate early gene and functions as a transcription factor. NOR1 has been shown to be rapidly induced by a number of stimulants including growth factors, fatty acids, and neurotransmitters. Elevated NOR1 levels may be involved in a number of pathophysiological processes. These include regulation of cellular apoptosis and regeneration, neuron formation, contextual fearing memory, inflammation, vascular smooth muscle proliferation, insulin secretion, and tumor development, whereby NOR1 mediates the pathogenesis of numerous diseases such as cerebral ischemia, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, cardiac hypertrophy, diabetes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. However, to date, comprehensive insights into the function of NOR1 are not available in sources published online. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the function and molecular and pharmacological regulation of NOR1 in various pathological or physiological conditions to advance the development of NOR1 as a novel target for disease treatment.

Accurately estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for assessing carbon storage in forest ecosystems. However, traditional field survey methods are time-consuming, and vegetation indices based on optical remote sensing are prone to saturation effects, potentially underestimating AGB in subtropical forests. To overcome these limitations, we propose an improved approach that combines three-dimensional (3D) forest structure data collected using unmanned aerial vehicle light detection and ranging (UAV LiDAR) technology with ground measurements to apply a binary allometric growth equation for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in subtropical forests of China. Additionally, we analyze the influence of terrain factors such as elevation and slope on the distribution of forest biomass. Our results demonstrate a high accuracy in estimating tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH) using LiDAR data, with an R2 of 0.89 for tree height and 0.92 for DBH. In the study area, AGB ranges from 0.22 to 755.19 t/ha, with an average of 121.28 t/ha. High AGB values are mainly distributed in the western and central-southern parts of the study area, while low AGB values are concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions. Furthermore, we observe that AGB in the study area exhibits an increasing trend with altitude, reaching its peak at approximately 1650 m, followed by a gradual decline with further increase in altitude. Forest AGB gradually increases with slope, reaching its peak near 30°. However, AGB decreases within the 30–80° range as the slope increases. This study confirms the effectiveness of using UAV LiDAR for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in complex terrains. This method can be widely applied in productivity, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity studies of subtropical forests.

The development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions is an extremely important area for the development of green and clean energy. In this work, a precursor material was successfully prepared via electrodeposition of two doping elements to construct a co-doped cobalt hydroxide electrocatalyst (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se). This approach was demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The experimental results show that the material exhibited a smaller impedance value and a larger electrochemically active surface area. In the HER process, the overpotential was only 109 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. In addition, the doping of selenium and ruthenium effectively prevented the corrosion of the catalysts, with the (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se) material showing no significant reduction in the catalytic performance after 50 h. This synergistic approach through elemental co-doping demonstrated good results in the HER process.

Polygonati Rhizoma is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with complex pre-processing steps. Fermentation is a common method for processing TCM to reduce herb toxicity and enhance their properties and/or produce new effects. Here, in this study, using Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we aimed to evaluate the potential application of solid fermentation in isolating different functional polysaccharides from Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua. With hot water extraction, ethanol precipitation, DEAE anion exchange chromatography and gel filtration, multiple neutral and acidic polysaccharides were obtained, showing different yields, content, compositions and functional groups after fermentation. Combining in vitro experiments and in vivo aging and immunosuppressed mouse models, we further compared the antioxidant and immunomodulating bioactivities of these polysaccharides and found a prominent role of a natural polysaccharide (BNP) from fermented P. cyrtonema via Bacillus subtilis in regulating intestinal antioxidant defense and immune function, which may be a consequence of the ability of BNP to modulate the homeostasis of gut microbiota. Thus, this work provides evidence for the further development and utilization of P. cyrtonema with fermentation, and reveals the potential values of BNP in the treatment of intestinal disorders.

In-wheel motors for new energy vehicles are close to the brake, which results in a high ambient temperature. Thus, there is a high demand for cooling systems. This paper designs an oil-spray-cooled system based on the flat structural characteristics of an in-wheel motor. A computational fluid dynamics method with a two-phase volume-of-fluid model is applied to simulate the transient process of oil spraying from nozzles onto the stator carrier and then dripping to the end windings. The spatially distributed fluid interfaces with location and shape fidelity are derived. Considering the big difference of thermal inertia between the motor solid and oil fluid, the mixed timescale method is applied to calculate the temperature fields of the fluid and solid. Finally, a prototype is fabricated and tested to verify the proposed oil-cooling system and simulation method.

Predicting the eventual volume of tumor cells, that might proliferate from a given tumor, can help in cancer early detection and medical procedure planning to prevent their migration to other organs. In this work, a new statistical framework is proposed using Bayesian techniques for detecting the eventual volume of cells expected to proliferate from a glioblastoma (GBM) tumor. Specifically, the tumor region was first extracted using a parallel image segmentation algorithm. Once the tumor region was determined, we were interested in the number of cells that could proliferate from this tumor until its survival time. For this, we constructed the posterior distribution of the tumor cell numbers based on the proposed likelihood function and a certain prior volume. Furthermore, we extended the detection model and conducted a Bayesian regression analysis by incorporating radiomic features to discover those non-tumor cells that remained undetected. The main focus of the study was to develop a time-independent prediction model that could reliably predict the ultimate volume a malignant tumor of the fourth-grade severity could attain and which could also determine if the incorporation of the radiomic properties of the tumor enhanced the chances of no malignant cells remaining undetected.

Dietary oxidized fat contains harmful materials such as hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde (MDA). Excessive oxidized fat intake during pregnancy and lactation not only leads to maternal body injury but also damages offspring health. Our previous study demonstrated that vitamin D (VD) had antioxidative capability in sows. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of maternal VD and inulin supplementation in oxidized oil diet on the growth performance and oxidative stress of their offspring. Sixty 5-month-old C57BL/6N female mice were randomly divided into five groups: Control group (basal diet, n = 12), OF group (oxidized-soybean-oil-replaced diet, n = 12), OFV group (oxidized-soybean-oil-replaced diet + 7000 IU/kg VD, n = 12), OFI group (oxidized-soybean-oil-replaced diet + 5% inulin, n = 12) and OFVI group (oxidized-soybean-oil-replaced diet + 7000 IU/kg VD + 5% inulin, n = 12). Mice were fed with the respective diet during pregnancy and lactation. The offspring were then slaughtered on day 21 of age at weaning. Results showed that a maternal oxidized oil diet impaired body weight and liver weight gain of offspring during lactation compared to the control group, while maternal VD, inulin or VD and inulin mixture supplementation reversed this effect. In addition, the activity of T-AOC in the liver of offspring was lower in the OF group than that in the control group, but could be restored by maternal VD and inulin mixture supplementation. Furthermore, the gene expression of both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as Il-6, Tnfα and Il-10, in offspring liver were downregulated by a maternal oxidized oil diet compared with the control group, but they were restored by maternal VD or VD and inulin mixture supplementation. The expressions of Vdr and Cyp27a1 were decreased by a maternal oxidized oil diet compared with the control group, while they could be increased by VD or VD and inulin mixture supplementation. Conclusion: maternal oxidized oil diet intake could impair the growth performance by inducing oxidative stress, but this can be relieved by maternal VD and inulin supplementation.

The chemical transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) not only reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere by humans, but also produces carbon compounds that can be used as precursors for chemical and fuel production. Herein, a selective catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol is achieved by a bifunctional molybdenum disulfide catalyst (MoS2) with magnesium oxide and nickel and potassium promoters. Molybdenum disulfide prepared by the supercritical ethanol method has a large specific surface area and presents good catalytic performance with high methanol selectivity when loaded with potassium (K) and nickel (Ni) promoters. In addition, the catalysts were evaluated and it was founded that the addition of the K-promoter improved methanol selectivity. This research provides a new strategy for improved product selectivity and space–time yield (STY) of methanol in CO2 hydrogenation.

In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained popularity due to their flexibility, mobility, and accessibility in various fields, including search and rescue (SAR) operations. The use of UAVs in SAR can greatly enhance the task success rates in reaching inaccessible or dangerous areas, performing challenging operations, and providing real-time monitoring and modeling of the situation. This article aims to help readers understand the latest progress and trends in this field by synthesizing and organizing papers related to UAV search and rescue. An introduction to the various types and components of UAVs and their importance in SAR operations is settled first. Additionally, we present a comprehensive review of sensor integrations in UAVs for SAR operations, highlighting their roles in target perception, localization, and identification. Furthermore, we elaborate on the various applications of UAVs in SAR, including on-site monitoring and modeling, perception and localization of targets, and SAR operations such as task assignment, path planning, and collision avoidance. We compare different approaches and methodologies used in different studies, assess the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, and provide insights on addressing the research questions relating to specific UAV operations in SAR. Overall, this article presents a comprehensive overview of the significant role of UAVs in SAR operations. It emphasizes the vital contributions of drones in enhancing mission success rates, augmenting situational awareness, and facilitating efficient and effective SAR activities. Additionally, the article discusses potential avenues for enhancing the performance of UAVs in SAR.

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses, resulting in serious yield reductions in wheat production. Silicon (Si) has been considered beneficial to enhancing wheat resistance to drought stress. However, few studies have explored the mediated effects of foliar supplementation of Si on drought stress imposed at different wheat growth stages. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of Si supplementation on the physiological and biochemical responses of wheat to drought stress imposed at the jointing (D-jointing), anthesis (D-anthesis) and filling (D-filling) stages. Our results showed that a moderate water deficit markedly decreased the dry matter accumulation, leaf relative water content (LRWC), photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Sc), transpiration rate (Tr) and antioxidant activity [peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)]. On the contrary, it remarkably increased the content of osmolytes (proline, soluble sugar, soluble protein) and lipid peroxidation. The grain yields of D-jointing, D-anthesis and D-filling treatments were 9.59%, 13.9% and 18.9% lower, respectively, compared to the control treatment (CK). However, foliar supplementation of Si at the anthesis and filling stages significantly improved plant growth under drought stress due to the increased Si content. Consequently, the improvement in antioxidant activity and soluble sugar, and the reduction in the content of ROS, increased the LRWC, chlorophyll content, Pn, Sc and Tr, and ultimately boosted wheat yield by 5.71% and 8.9%, respectively, in comparison with the non-Si-treated plants subjected to water stress at the anthesis and filling stages. However, the mitigating effect of Si application was not significant at the jointing stage. It was concluded that foliar supplementation of Si, especially at the reproductive stage, was effective in alleviating drought-induced yield reduction.

The limited number and under-representation of side-scan sonar samples hinders the training of high-performance underwater object detection models. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a diffusion model-based method to augment side-scan sonar image samples. First, the side-scan sonar image is transformed into Gaussian distributed random noise based on its a priori discriminant. Then, the Gaussian noise is modified step by step in the inverse process to reconstruct a new sample with the same distribution as the a priori data. To improve the sample generation speed, an accelerated encoder is introduced to reduce the model sampling time. Experiments show that our method can generate a large number of representative side-scan sonar images. The generated side-scan sonar shipwreck images are used to train an underwater shipwreck object detection model, which achieves a detection accuracy of 91.5% on a real side-scan sonar dataset. This exceeds the detection accuracy of real side-scan sonar data and validates the feasibility of the proposed method.

In the context of building industrialization, the dissemination and transmission of information related to prefabricated building component parts are of paramount importance throughout the building’s life cycle and the entire industry chain, necessitating high standards of information integration. At present, the development of information coding for prefabricated building component parts in China is hindered by various challenges, such as the lack of uniform norms and standards across different regions, as well as significant differences in the composition and character length of coded information categories. Through reviewing academic papers and society, group, and local standards related to the coding of prefabricated building component parts, this article identifies the importance of component part coding information categories. Considering the readability of codes, a practical coding system is adopted for the coding design, proposing a semi-implicit practical coding method for prefabricated building component parts. This method has strong flexibility and wide applicability. Additionally, a common coding system for component parts is devised to address the issue of missing information caused by the limited characters of component parts codes. This system enables comprehensive life cycle information management of component parts of prefabricated buildings and promotes the application of prefabricated buildings in China.

Natural astaxanthin has been widely used in the food, cosmetic, and medicine industries due to its exceptional biological activity. Shrimp shell is one of the primary natural biological sources of astaxanthin. However, after astaxanthin recovery, there is still a lot of chitin contained in the residues. In this study, the residue from shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) shells after astaxanthin extraction using ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate ([Emim]Ac) was used as a bioadsorbent to remove fluoride from the aqueous solution. The results show the IL extraction conditions, including the solid/liquid ratio, temperature, time, and particle size, all played important roles in the removal of fluoride by the shrimp shell residue. The shrimp shells treated using [Emim]Ac at 100 °C for 2 h exhibited an obvious porous structure, and the porosity showed a positive linear correlation with defluorination (DF, %). Moreover, the adsorption process of fluoride was nonspontaneous and endothermic, which fits well with both the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated according to the Langmuir model is 3.29 mg/g, which is better than most bioadsorbents. This study provides a low-cost and efficient method for the preparation of adsorbents from shrimp processing waste to remove fluoride from wastewater.

Abstract Background To explore the long-term trajectories considering pneumonia volumes and lymphocyte counts with individual data in COVID-19. Methods A cohort of 257 convalescent COVID-19 patients (131 male and 126 females) were included. Group-based multi-trajectory modelling was applied to identify different trajectories in terms of pneumonia lesion percentage and lymphocyte counts covering the time from onset to post-discharge follow-ups. We studied the basic characteristics and disease severity associated with the trajectories. Results We characterised four distinct trajectory subgroups. (1) Group 1 (13.9%), pneumonia increased until a peak lesion percentage of 1.9% (IQR 0.7–4.4) before absorption. The slightly decreased lymphocyte rapidly recovered to the top half of the normal range. (2) Group 2 (44.7%), the peak lesion percentage was 7.2% (IQR 3.2–12.7). The abnormal lymphocyte count restored to normal soon. (3) Group 3 (26.0%), the peak lesion percentage reached 14.2% (IQR 8.5–19.8). The lymphocytes continuously dropped to 0.75 × 109/L after one day post-onset before slowly recovering. (4) Group 4 (15.4%), the peak lesion percentage reached 41.4% (IQR 34.8–47.9), much higher than other groups. Lymphopenia was aggravated until the lymphocytes declined to 0.80 × 109/L on the fourth day and slowly recovered later. Aiming at the influence of matched filter (e.g.root raised cosine filter) on the coherent optical fiber communication system, the effect of roll-off factor (Rf) are studied under different value of optical bandwidth, residual dispersion and nonlinearity. Simulations are carried out for 256 Gbit/s Polarization Division Multiplexing-16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (PDM-16QAM) signals when the optical bandwidth are 33, 50 and 100 GHz, the residual dispersion ranging from-300 to 300 ps/nm and launched power ranging from-3 to 4 dBm in a 1 200 km optical fiber link. The simulations show that a good transmission performance can be achieved for limited optical bandwidth system when Rfis set to the value of (1+Rf) B (Bis the Baud rate of the signal) that similar to the system optical bandwidth. When optical bandwidth near or exceed 2 times Baud rate of signals, Rfshould be set between 0.2 and 0.5 to achieve a better transmission performance.

The wild rice species in the genus Oryza harbor a large amount of genetic diversity that has been untapped for rice improvement. Pan-genomics has revolutionized genomic research in plants. However, rice pan-genomic studies so far have been limited mostly to cultivated accessions, with only a few close wild relatives. Advances in sequencing technologies have permitted the assembly of high-quality rice genome sequences at low cost, making it possible to construct genus-level pan-genomes across all species. In this review, we summarize progress in current research on genetic and genomic resources in Oryza, and in sequencing and computational technologies used for rice genome and pan-genome construction. For future work, we discuss the approaches and challenges in the construction of, and data access to, Oryza pan-genomes based on representative high-quality genome assemblies. The Oryza pan-genomes will provide a basis for the exploration and use of the extensive genetic diversity present in both cultivated and wild rice populations.

Abstract Background Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is one of the most common types in the world with a high mortality rate. Despite advances in treatment strategies, the overall survival (OS) remains short. Our study aims to establish a reliable prognostic signature closely related to the survival of LUAD patients that can better predict prognosis and possibly help with individual monitoring of LUAD patients. Methods Raw RNA-sequencing data were obtained from Fudan University and used as a training group. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for the training group were screened. The univariate, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and multivariate cox regression analysis were conducted to identify the candidate prognostic genes and construct the risk score model. Kaplan–Meier analysis, time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to evaluate the prognostic power and performance of the signature. Moreover, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA-LUAD) dataset was further used to validate the predictive ability of prognostic signature. Results A prognostic signature consisting of seven prognostic-related genes was constructed using the training group. Abstract Background Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Chalkiness, the opaque part in the kernel endosperm formed by loosely piled starch and protein bodies. Chalkiness is a complex quantitative trait regulated by multiple genes and various environmental factors. Phytohormones play important roles in the regulation of chalkiness formation but the underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear at present. Results In this research, Xiangzaoxian24 (X24, pure line of indica rice with high-chalkiness) and its origin parents Xiangzaoxian11 (X11, female parent, pure line of indica rice with high-chalkiness) and Xiangzaoxian7 (X7, male parent, pure line of indica rice with low-chalkiness) were used as materials. The phenotype, physiological and biochemical traits combined with transcriptome analysis were conducted to illustrate the dynamic process and transcriptional regulation of rice chalkiness formation. Impressively, phytohormonal contents and multiple phytohormonal signals were significantly different in chalky caryopsis, suggesting the involvement of phytohormones, particularly ABA and auxin, in the regulation of rice chalkiness formation, through the interaction of multiple transcription factors and their downstream regulators. Conclusion These results indicated that chalkiness formation is a dynamic process associated with multiple genes, forming a complex regulatory network in which phytohormones play important roles. These results provided informative clues for illustrating the regulatory mechanisms of chalkiness formation in rice.

ObjectivesIn order to accurately grasp the vibration and sound characteristics of pipelines, a numerical simulation is carried out.Methods Based on the theory of acoustic-solid coupling, a numerical model of a pipeline is established. The dispersion curve of the vibration and acoustic modes of the pipeline is solved by parametric scanning. The dispersion characteristics of the elastic wall pipeline with air, water and crude oil, as well as the absolute pressure stress distribution in the pipeline, are analyzed, and the effects of wall thickness, elastic wall and hard sound field wall on the dispersion characteristics of the pipeline are studied.ResultsThe results show that wall thickness has little effect on the propagation mode of elastic waves in the pipeline, and the dispersion curve is shifted to high frequency with the increase in wall thickness, mainly influencing the cut-off frequency. Due to the effects of acoustic-solid coupling, the number of modes of the elastic pipeline increases, and the increased mode number is mainly the deformation mode of the pipeline wall. The absolute sound pressure distribution in the elastic wall is basically the same as that in the hard sound field wall. The dispersion characteristics of liquid or gas inside are different, while the dispersion characteristics of water or oil inside are similar, but the direct modes of the two are different.ConclusionsThe results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the pipeline acoustic detection of ships.

Abstract Purpose Studies on unresectable colorectal cancer liver metastasis(CRLM) rarely analyze the prognosis of the patients from the point of colonic subsites. We aimed to evaluate the effect of primary tumor resection (PTR) and different scope of colectomy on the prognosis of patients with unresectable transverse colon cancer liver metastasis (UTCLM), hepatic flexure cancer liver metastasis (UHFLM), and splenic flexure cancer liver metastasis (USFLM). Patients and methods The patients were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2015. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS). Kaplan-Meier analyses and log-rank tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of PTR on survival. Results In total, this study included a cohort of 1960 patients: 556 cases of UHFLM, 1008 cases of UTCLM, and 396 cases of USFLM. The median survival time of whole patients was 11.0 months, ranging from 7.0 months for UHFLM patients to 15.0 months for USFLM patients. Abstract Carbon dioxide generated by the combustion of fossil fuels exacerbates global environmental problems and hydrogen produced by renewable energy is a viable alternative in the continuous transition to sustainable and eco‐conscience development. Electrocatalysts are vital to electrocatalytic reactions and plasma surface modification is one of the promising techniques to modify nanoscale electrocatalysts for water splitting. Up to now, a comprehensive review on the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities of plasma‐tailored defective electrocatalysts for water electrolysis and hydrogen fuel cells is lacking. This paper systematically summarizes the current status of hydrogen production and fuel cell technologies, plasma principles and advantages, plasma‐tailored defective electrocatalysts from the perspective of water splitting and fuel cell applications, advanced characterization of defects, relationship between materials structure and catalytic activity of electrocatalysts, and finally challenges, opportunities, and future roadmap of plasma technologies. This review serves as a reference for future development of hydrogen technologies and offers insights into the structural tailoring of catalytic materials.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder caused by autoantibodies directed against the postsynaptic membrane at the neuromuscular junction. Perturbation of gut microbiota is thought to contribute to the development of MG, as reflected by fecal metabolomic signatures in humans, but there have been few studies on the relationship between oral microbiota profile and MG. The current study evaluated the correlation between oral microbiota composition and diversity and anti-acetylcholinereceptor (AChR) antibody–positive MG by comparing oral microbiota communities of patients (n = 20) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 20) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Principal coordinate analysis and Adonis analysis revealed significant differences in oral microflora profile between the twogroups. Compared to HCs, the abundance of the phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteria and genera Streptococcus, Rothia, and Lachnoanerobaculum was significantly increased whereas that of phyla Proteobacteria and Spirochaetotaand genera Neisseria, Haemophilus, and Treponema was significantly decreased in MG patients. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis showed that the biosynthesis of ansamycins and amino acid metabolism pathways were altered in MG. These results indicate that oral microbiota composition is perturbed in patients with anti-AChR antibody–positive MG, providing new potential avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions.
