Human-biting ticks threaten public health in the United States. Registration by the Environmental Protection Agency of products to kill host-seeking ticks or repel ticks contacting humans is indicative of their safety and effectiveness. Unregulated minimum risk products, exempt from Environmental Protection Agency registration and often based on botanical oils, are proliferating in the marketplace, but there is concern about their effectiveness to kill and repel ticks. Evaluations of such products are limited in the published literature. A review showed considerable variability among minimum risk products to kill host-seeking blacklegged ticks, with effectiveness similar to chemical pesticide products for some minimum risk products but minimal impact on the ticks for other products. Evaluations of minimum risk tick repellents have typically focused on individual active ingredients rather than formulated products, which often combine multiple active ingredients. Supramolecular gelator functionalized liquid metal (Gelator@GLM) exhibited excellent tribological properties due to the synergistic effect of GLM nanodroplets and the gel generating protective film. [Display omitted] • Supramolecular gelator functionalized liquid metal nanodroplets were prepared by self-assembly and radical polymerization. • The Gelator@GLM nanodroplets displayed effective anti-wear and friction reduction properties as lubricant additives. • The lubrication performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of GLM nanodroplets and the gel generating protective film. In this work, dopamine n -butenylamide (DBA) modified GLM nanodroplets were prepared via directional ultrasound of bulk liquid metal in ethanol aqueous solution as well as DBA self-assembly, followed by grafting with urea-based gelators via radical polymerization to obtain GLM-based supramolecular gelators (Gelator@GLM). The grafting gelators can impart their good compatibility between the GLM nanodroplets and the base oil, so that the Gelator@GLM nanodroplets can be dispersed in the base oil uniformly and stably for more than 3 weeks. Meanwhile, the tribological properties of Gelator@GLM nanodroplets was significantly enhanced, with a reduction of coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear volume of 41.18% and 92.13%, respectively, when compared with the base oil. Furthermore, Gelator@GLM additives exhibited stable lubrication performance even under variable temperature and frequency conditions. The synergistic effect of GLM nanodroplets and the gels generating a physical adsorption film and a chemically protective film (containing iron and chromium oxides, nitrides and carbides) can be credited with the improved tribological performance. Wood chip pyrolysis oil was used as raw material, and the pretreated bio-oil was polymerized with acrylic acid (AA) and chitosan (CTS) in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS). A new bio-oil-based environmentally friendly coal dust inhibitor(Hbio-CTS) was prepared. The results show that at 70 °C, CTS and AA mass is 0.65 g and 3.00 g, when APS/CTS is 5%, the maximum viscosity of Hbio-CTS synthesized under optimized conditions is 5.4 mPa ⋅ s. Both the FTIR and TG properties of Hbio-CTS confirmed that AA and CTS had been successfully grafted on the structure of bio-oil components. The solidified layer formed by Hbio-CTS on pulverized coal is very little affected by wind and rain. Among them, at 17 m/s(class VII), the maximum mass loss of pulverized coal was 6.99%. The article substantiates the importance of technological control of the production of plastic lubricants which characterizes physical, chemical or operational properties. Effective dynamic viscosity has been considered the most appropriate characteristics for technological control of for production of plastic lubricants. Effective dynamic viscosity of two-component plastic lubricant produced from secondary raw materials, as well as lubricants obtained using classical petroleum raw materials and soap thickeners, significantly depends on the viscosity of the base oil. It was defined that type of polymer thickener has rather insignificant effect on the value of the effective dynamic viscosity comparing to viscosity of the base oil. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has the biggest thickening effect on the base oil, and polypropylene (PP) has the least. A diagram of location of the viscosity measuring sensors in the middle of the apparatus for dispersing the polymer thickener in base oil as a dispersion area was proposed. It helps to optimize the process of dispersing the polymer thickener by controlling the duration technological process that results in reducing the consumption of energy resources. Mineral oil undergoes several chemical and physical changes with temperature change and time of storage. The lubricating additives are widely applied to the engine lubrication to suppress undesirable base oil properties like pour point depressants and viscosity index (VI) improvers. The current study aimed to prepare lube oil additives by preparing terpolymers as follows: reacting acrylic acid with various linear alcohols (decanol, dodecanol, and hexadecanol), several alkyl acrylates can be produced. Different imides were produced as a result of the reaction of maleic anhydride with different amines (aniline, triethylenetetramine, and tetraethylenepentamine). Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized for investigating the structures of prepared compounds. Various terpolymers were synthesized during the polymerization reaction of different imides, different alkyl acrylates, and octene. The molecular weights of all polymers were detected through the use of gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the thermal stability of the prepared terpolymers, and the results demonstrated that the prepared terpolymers had high heat resistance. Above 300°C, the polymers deteriorated. Shear-thinning is observed in the rheological behavior, which approaches perfect Newtonian behavior at a high shear rate. The terpolymers created lowered the pour point of oil to -24 in the case of polymer C2 and viscosity index is increased to 140 in the case of polymer C3. Quantum calculations prove that compound C3 has more atom capacity to receive electrons compared to A3, which allows the formation of hydrogen bonds with other monomers making the resultant polymer bulkier and hence giving oil higher viscosity index. Ionic liquids (ILs) are molten organic salts consisting of organic cations and weakly coordinating organic/inorganic anions at room temperature. ILs have excellent physical and chemical properties such as high thermal stability, high combustible temperature, high miscibility with organic compounds and so on, making them good candidates for high performance lubricants and lubricant additives. The functional designability of ILs makes them novel lubrication materials that can break through the bottleneck of the active control of friction and lubrication. This paper firstly briefly introduces how to design the physical and chemical properties of the ILs required for different friction conditions by bonding specific cations with anions. Then, the lubrication mechanisms of ILs as base lubricants and additives for oils and water are focused on. The correlation between the structure of ILs and the lubrication results are established, which can guide the structural design of ILs in different applications. The response behaviors of friction characteristics under external electric fields are analyzed, which can provide a theoretical basis for the intelligent control of friction based on ILs. Friction and wear are two major elements that influence the life of a variety of equipment. According to estimates, as much as 30% of the energy used is dissipated as friction. However, this figure can be reduced by developing materials that enhance surfaces and apply lubricants appropriately. This study aims to analyze the impact of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles on the rheological and antiwear characteristics of four distinct oil varieties, namely Society of Automotive Engineers SAE-20W50, soybean, Polyalphaolefin PAO-4, and olive oils. The results of the tribological tests demonstrated a noteworthy enhancement in antiwear characteristics with the addition of 0.2 wt.% of h-BN nanolubricant. Among all nanolubricants, the maximum reduction in coefficient of friction (COF) and wear scar diameter was observed at 0.2 wt.% of h-BN in SAE-20W50 oil. Compared to the base oils, the wear scar diameter decreased by 17.93%, 8.80%, 22.65%, and 24.04% for (soybean oil and 0.2 wt.% of h-BN), (SAE20W50 and 0.2 wt.% of h-BN), (PAO4 and 0.2 wt.% of h-BN), and (olive oil and 0.2 wt.% of h-BN), respectively. Rheological test results indicated that with the addition of h-BN nanoparticles, the viscosity of the base oils significantly increased. Grease, a type of lubricant, finds applications in various mechanical components due to advantages such as shape stability and sealing. However, grease is classified as a non-Newtonian fluid, and its film formation behavior is not fully understood to date due to variations in the mechanism related to the film formation behavior of grease based on factors like the base oil, bleed oil, thickener, and additives. In this study, the film formation behavior of fluorine-based grease was analyzed through the 3D profile of the grease after a friction test. In particular, the film formation behavior of the grease during sliding motion was analyzed. The experimental equipment used was a reciprocating-motion-type experimental equipment. Variations in the 3D profile were observed based on the speed and the cycle, indicating differences in the film formation behavior corresponding to changes in viscosity. In contrast to numerous studies that have observed the film formation behavior of grease under rolling motion, investigating the film formation behavior during the initial cycles of sliding motion will provide a profound understanding of the grease's film formation process. The rheology of a conventional lithium-12 hydroxystearate bearing grease changes significantly when it is subjected to mechanical shear. Often this shear energy–along with the consequent entropy–is measured and used in engineering and thermodynamic models, leading to grease life models for predicting bearing seizure due to insufficiently thick film or loss of lubricity of the base oil/grease. In this degradation process, the bonds between the individual molecules, consisting mainly of the fairly weak van der Waals bonds and/or hydrogen bonds, are broken during this shearing process. In this article, we show that only a very small portion of the shear energy is needed to break these bonds and that the vast majority is dissipated as heat due to the lubricant viscosity, also known as viscous dissipation. We model the thickener as rod-shaped fibers, wherein the grease viscosity is reduced by a factor of 5 when the length of a fiber is reduced by a factor of 2.5. The energy needed to break the bonds between the molecules to shorten these fibers is 6 to 7 orders of magnitude smaller than the energy applied by shear. In this study, we used the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and two essential oils (mint and rosemary) to investigate the effect of the parents (F0) exposure to a sublethal dose of essential oil on grand offspring (F2) encountering the same essential oil. Then we evaluated biological parameters, including immature development time, sex ratio, adult emergence, egg number, egg hatch, longevity, and mating behaviors in three generations (F0, F1, and F2). Results showed when F0 experienced essential oil in the embryonic stage, parental and grandparental effects were more severe than adulthood experiences. Also, grandparental effects increased or decreased reactions of F2 generation when faced with a similar essential oil, depending on grand offspring sex. For example, when grandparents experienced rosemary essential oil in the embryonic stage, they produced more tolerant female grand offspring with a better ability to cope with the same essential oil (increased adult longevity and egg number). However, male grandoffspring were more sensitive (had a higher mortality percentage and less copulation success). Grandparental effects of exposure to mint essential oil diminished female grand offspring longevity and improved male copulation behavior parameters such as increased copulation duration and decreased rejection by females. In order to improve the shale oil production rate and save fracturing costs, based on dynamic production data, a production-oriented optimization method for fracture spacing of multi-stage fractured horizontal wells is proposed in this study. First, M. Brown et al.'s trilinear seepage flow models and their pressure and flow rate solutions are applied. Second, deconvolution theory is introduced to normalize the production data. The data of variable pressure and variable flow rate are, respectively, transformed into the pressure data under unit flow rate and the flow rate data under unit production pressure drop; and the influence of data error is eliminated. Two kinds of typical curve of the normalized data are analyzed using the pressure and flow rate solutions of M. Brown et al.'s models. The two fitting methods constrain each other. Thus, reservoir and fracture parameters are interpretated. A practical model has been established to more accurately describe the seepage flow behavior in shale oil reservoirs. Third, using Duhamel's principle and the rate solution, the daily and cumulative production rate under any variable production pressure can be obtained. The productivity can be more accurately predicted. Finally, the analysis method is applied to analyze the actual dynamic production data. The fracture spacing of a shale oil producing well in an actual block is optimized from the aspects of production life, cumulative production, economic benefits and other influencing factors, and some significant conclusions are obtained. The research results show that with the goal of maximum cumulative production, the optimal fracture spacing is 5.5 m for 5 years and 11.4 m for 10 years. In this paper, the local vortex flows for oil transported through main pipelines are analyzed on the basis of von Kármán vortex streets. The vortex flow analysis is based on computational fluid dynamics modeling using the Ansys Fluent software. The simulation of local vortex flows is based on the shear-stress transport (SST) model, representing a combination of the k–ε and k–ω turbulence models. It is proven that, for specified oil-flow parameters and characteristics, it is possible to generate local vortex flows in the center of a pipeline. The estimation of hydraulic drag in the zone of the von Kármán vortex streets indicates that it can be decreased. On the other hand, the analysis of overall pressure losses evidences that form drag losses are predominant in the case of flow around vortex-generating devices. Therefore, it becomes necessary to search for other methods to induce local vortex flows or overcome drag losses by using the resources of multifunctional units in oil-transport processes. Phosphonation and nitrogenation of methyl epoxyoleate (MEO) were done to prepare phosphonitrogenated methyl epoxyoleate (PNMEO). The structural characteristics of PNMEO were characterized. The tribological properties of PNMEO and MEO as additives in a paraffin oil and a rapeseed oil were evaluated, and the morphologies, element compositions and tribochemical species of worn surfaces were analyzed. Results showed that PNMEO was more efficient in enhancing tribological properties of oils than MEO. Results also showed that PNMEO and MEO were more powerful in paraffin oil than in rapeseed oil in improving load-carrying, friction-reducing and anti-wear performances, but in rapeseed oil than in paraffin oil in improving extreme pressure property. The tribological mechanisms of PNMEO in reducing friction and wear were attributed to PNMEO-involved tribo-adsorptions and tribo-reactions to produce a composite boundary lubrication film which consisted of a matrix of PNMEO with inclusions of iron oxide, polyphosphates, aminic compounds, and the base oil molecules. Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of Schizochytrium sp. (TKD‐1) oil as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Schizochytrium sp. is a single‐cell microalga. The strain TKD‐1, used by the applicant (ATK Biotech Co. Ltd.), belongs to the species Schizochytrium limacinum. The NF is a mixture of triglycerides in which docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) represents 53%–61% of fatty acids. The applicant proposed to use the NF in infant formulae (IF) and follow‐on formulae (FOF). The use levels proposed by the applicant were derived from Regulation (EU) 2016/127, which states the mandatory addition of DHA to IF and FOF at the level of 20–50 mg/100 kcal. S. limacinum was attributed the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) status with the qualification 'for production purposes only'. Data provided by the applicant demonstrated the absence of viable cells in the NF. No toxicological studies were performed with the NF. However, based on the available toxicological data on oils derived from Schizochytrium sp., the QPS status of the source of the NF, the production process, the composition of the NF and the absence of marine biotoxins and viable cells in the NF, the Panel considers there are no concerns with regard to toxicity of the NF. Machining high-strength structural steels often requires challenging processes. It is essential to improve the machinability of such materials, which are frequently needed in industrial manufacturing areas. Recently, it has become necessary to enhance the machinability of such materials using different nanopowders. In this study, different cooling/lubricating (C/L) liquids were prepared with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) nanopowder. The aim was to improve the machinability properties of Dillimax 690T material with the prepared CNC-based cutting fluids. CNC nanopowders were added to 0.5% distilled water by volume, and a new nanofluid was produced. Unlike previous studies, base synthetic oil and CNC-based cutting fluid were sprayed on the cutting area with a double minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) system. Machinability tests were carried out by milling. Two different cutting speeds (Vc = 120–150 m/min), two different feed rates (f = 0.05–0.075 mm/tooth), and four different C/L environments (dry, MQL oil, CNC nanofluid, MQL oil + CNC nanofluid) were used in the experiments. In the study, where a total of 16 experiments were performed, cutting temperature (Tc), surface roughness (Ra), tool wear (Vb), and energy consumption results were analyzed in detail. According to the test results, significant improvements were achieved in the machinability properties of the material in the experiments carried out using CNC nanofluid. In particular, the hybrid C/L environment using MQL oil + CNC nanofluid improved all machinability metrics by over 15% compared to dry machining. This work aims to clarify the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake on the adult brain affected by amyloid pathology. McGill-R-Thy1-APP transgenic (Tg) rat and 5xFAD Tg mouse models that represent earlier or later disease stages were employed. The animals were exposed to a control diet (CD) or an HFD based on corn oil, from young (rats) or adult (mice) ages for 24 or 10 weeks, respectively. In rats and mice, the HFD impaired reference memory in wild-type (WT) animals but did not worsen it in Tg, did not cause obesity, and did not increase triglycerides or glucose levels. Conversely, the HFD promoted stronger microglial activation in Tg vs. WT rats but had no effect on cerebral amyloid deposition. IFN-γ, IL-1β, and IL-6 plasma levels were increased in Tg rats, regardless of diet, while CXCL1 chemokine levels were increased in HFD-fed mice, regardless of genotype. Hippocampal 3-nitrotyrosine levels tended to increase in HFD-fed Tg rats but not in mice. Overall, an HFD with an elevated omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio as compared to the CD (25:1 vs. 8.4:1) did not aggravate the outcome of AD regardless of the stage of amyloid pathology, suggesting that many neurobiological processes relevant to AD are not directly dependent on PUFA intake. Graphene-based materials have great potential for tribological applications. Graphene's unique properties such as low shear resistance, high stiffness, and thermal conductivity make it an attractive material for improving the properties of lubricants in a wide range of industrial applications, from vehicles to house refrigerators and industrial machinery such as gearboxes, large compressors, etc. The current review aims to give an engineering perspective, attributing more importance to commercially available graphene and fully formulated lubricants instead of laboratory-scaled produced graphene and base oils without additives. The use of lubricants with graphene-based additives has produced e.g., an increase in mechanical efficiency, consequently reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20% for domestic refrigerators and up to 6% for ICE vehicles. Hydrogenation of carbon monoxide (Fischer–Tropsch synthesis) is a promising route to ultraclean motor fuels, base oils and petrochemicals on the basis of non-petroleum feed such as natural gas, coal and biomass. Although cobalt-based industrial catalysts for this process are in operation for many years, they still need to be improved in terms of specific activity and selectivity to target hydrocarbons. This paper describes the effect of catalyst support coating with carbon on the formation of cobalt active phase and catalytic performance in CO hydrogenation. Carbonization of Mg–Al spinel was performed by impregnating with aqueous glucose solution followed by thermal treatment in inert atmosphere. Thus prepared carbonized material was used for cobalt deposition by incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy, thermoanalytical measurements combined with mass spectrometry of released gases, X-ray diffraction and in situ magnetic measurements during activation in H2 flow. Catalytic performance in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis was assessed at T = 210 °C, P = 20 bar. The size of Co3O4 crystallites in calcined catalysts and metallic cobalt in activated catalysts decreases with carbon content in the support. Cobalt precursor is reduced completely to metal within 2 h in typical activation conditions for FTS cobalt catalysts: H2 flow, 450 °C. Activity in CO hydrogenation decreases while selectivity to higher hydrocarbons increases with carbon content. High proportion of olefins in synthesized light hydrocarbons (> 65%) is a remarkable feature of the elaborated catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving the lubricating properties of base oils through additives is a crucial objective of tribological research, as it helps to reduce friction and wear of materials. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a 2D nanomaterial with excellent tribological properties that is often used as a lubricant additive. Several studies have been conducted on the preparation and utilization of MoS2 and its nanocomposites as lubricant additives. This paper reviews the research progress on MoS2 nanomaterials as lubricant additives. It firstly introduces various synthesis methods of MoS2 nanomaterials while focusing on the preparation of nano-MoS2 as lubricant additives. It then summarizes the dispersion stability of nano-MoS2 in lubricating oils which has been paid extensive attention. Moreover, this paper reviews and discusses the tribological properties of nano-MoS2 and its various composites as lubricant additives. The possible anti-wear and friction reduction mechanisms of nano-MoS2 and its composites are also discussed. Finally, this paper presents the challenges faced by nano-MoS2 additives in the field of lubrication and the prospects for future research in view of previous studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, willow catkins/MoS2 nanoparticles (denoted as WCMSs) have been prepared using a hydrothermal method. The WCMSs were modified with oleic acid (OA) to improve dispersion in base oil. The friction and wear properties of WCMSs in liquid paraffin (LP) for steel balls were investigated using a four-ball wear tester. The results have shown that at a high reaction temperature, willow catkins (being used as a template) and urea (being used as a nitrogen resource) can effectively decrease the wear scar diameters (WSDs) and coefficients of friction (COFs). At a concentration of 0.5 wt.%, the WSD and COF of steel balls, when lubricated using LP containing modified WCMS with urea, decreased from 0.65 mm and 0.175 of pure LP to 0.46 mm and 0.09, respectively. The addition of urea and hydroxylated catkins can generate a significant number of loose nano-sheets and even graphene-like sheets. The weak van der Waals forces, decreasing the shear forces that the steel balls must overcome, provide effective lubrication during rotation. On the other hand, the tribo-films containing MoS2, FeS, azide, metal oxides and other compounds play important roles in reducing friction and facilitating anti-wear properties. MoS2 lithium-based grease is suitable for lubrication protection between bearings at high temperatures and loads due to its excellent tribological properties. However, there is little research on the influence of different addition methods of MoS2 additive on its tribology and corrosion properties. In this work, eco-friendly vegetable oil was selected as the base oil, with MoS2 powder as the additive to synthesize lithium-based grease. The effects of different adding modes of MoS2 on the tribology and corrosion properties of the grease were studied. The experimental results showed that adding 0.01 wt% MoS2 before thickening (Method D) was more conducive to improving the tribological properties of lithium grease. The average friction coefficient was reduced by 26.1%, and the average wear scar diameter was reduced by 0.16 mm. After grinding and adding (Method B) 0.01 wt% MoS2, the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the steel sheet was as high as 96.97%. The reason was that the tribochemical reaction of MoS2 evenly distributed throughout the grease during friction, forming a thin friction film, reducing friction and wear. The protective film formed by MoS2 and GCr15-bearing steel improved the corrosion inhibition performance of the grease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The forthcoming revolution in mobility and the use of lubricants to ensure ecological friendliness intensifies the pressure on tribology for predictors in new life cycles, mainly addressing wear. The current paper aims to obtain such predictors by studying how the wear processes that occur in a standard FE8 bearing test rig under thin film lubrication are conducted by the properties of the lubricant rather than simple viscosity parameters. Assuming that the activity of a lubricant with respect to the temperature, surface, and chemicals is a matter of its chemical potential, the results show that the nature of the base oil is a key parameter, apart from the chemical structure of the additives. Moreover, it becomes clear that chemical predictors are changing by altering the conditions they are exposed to. As an important result, the lubricant is effective in the prevention of wear if it has the capacity to uptake and transmit electrical charges due to its polarisability during a wear process. Background and Objective: Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) culture is a part of the general culture of the organization, and it is considered a management tool for reducing incidents and controlling unsafe behaviors in the organization. The present study aimed to present a valid and reliable tool in the field of HSE culture based on the Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) guide in process industries. Materials and Methods: The current research is an instrument-making study that was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of the HSE culture questionnaire among the employees of Shahid Hashminejad Gas Refinery. After studying various texts and using the World Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) guide to design related questions, quantitative and qualitative content validity by 10 experts, face validity (comprehensibility), reproducibility, and internal consistency by 30 employees, and construct validity was checked by 410 employees. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis of the final version of the questionnaire confirmed 34 items in six dimensions of the observable program of HSE management, competence and awareness of the situation, communication, training of work procedures and human factors, incident management, and HSE evaluation and audit. The average impact score, validity ratio, and validity index were 3.81, 0.82, and 0.92, respectively (a =0.94 and ICC=0.975), which was within the acceptable range. Conclusion: Based on the obtained findings, Iranian HSE specialists can use this valid and reliable tool to evaluate the HSE culture of employees, especially in process industries, and use the findings as guidelines for effective health, safety, and environmental interventions. Gulong shale oil is found in a typical continental shale oil reservoir, which is different from marine shale oil reservoirs. The Gulong shale oil reservoir is a pure shale-type oil reservoir with abundantly developed nanoscale pores, making it extremely difficult to unlock fluids. Pressure drive does not easily achieve fluid unlock conditions; thus, it is necessary to utilize imbibition to unlock nanoscale pore fluids. In this study, experiments were conducted on oil displacement by high-speed centrifugal pressure and imbibition under different conditions, respectively, and simulations were used to evaluate the effects of pressure differential drive and imbibition efficiency on the utilization of crude oil following fracturing. Combined with the mixed wettability of the reservoir, the imbibition efficiency was analyzed, and the imbibition efficiency at different soaking stages was evaluated. When the fracturing pressure was higher than the matrix pore pressure, the imbibition efficiency was the most obvious, which was 27.9%. Spontaneous imbibition depending solely on capillary force had poor efficiency, at 16.8%. When the fracturing pressure was lower than the matrix pore pressure, the imbibition efficiency was the lowest, at only 1.3%. It is proposed that strengthening fracture pressure and promoting pressurized imbibition are the keys to improving shale oil development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vanillin is a popular and versatile flavor compound, almost entirely produced from petroleum‐derived phenol by a multi‐step chemical synthesis. The process is hazardous to the environment and unsustainable for its fossil oil usage. Therefore, developing environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable routes to biobased vanillin is essential. Here, we report on vanillin production from 4‐n‐propylguaiacol (4PG), one of the main components in lignin oil obtained through reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of soft wood, by employing recombinant Escherichia coli cells. Conversion is based on the expression of two engineered oxidative enzymes: a 4‐n‐propylguaiacol oxidase and an isoeugenol dioxygenase. A high yield of vanillin, 66% from 4PG in RCF lignin oil was achieved through rounds of optimisation of the whole‐cell conversion process. This high‐performance strategy was readily scaled up to produce vanillin at an unprecedented 18% and 3% yield based on lignin oil and spruce wood respectively. The whole‐cell bioconversion process shows good tolerance even at high loadings of starting material, showcasing the robustness and applicability of the employed biocatalysts. Synthetic adhesives play a crucial role in holding together solid materials through interfacial interactions. Thermoplastic and thermosetting adhesives are important types of synthetic adhesives, with thermoplastic adhesives being reassemblable and thermosetting adhesives exhibiting high adhesive strength and creep resistance. However, there is a need to combine the advantages of both types and develop high bonding strength, reassemblable adhesives. Here, epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) was used to prepare adhesive networks and Diels–Alder bonds were incorporated to enhance reassembly ability. The ESO was functionalized with furyl groups and cross-linked via the reaction between furyl and imide groups to involve the Diels–Alder bonds. The resulting adhesive exhibited good solvent resistance and mechanical properties, which could be regulated by adjusting the quantity of cross-linker. The prepared adhesives also demonstrated self-healing capabilities, as the scratch on the surface gradually diminished with heating. Additionally, the adhesives showed the ability to undergo recycling without significant changes in properties. The prepared adhesives exhibited hydrophilicity and the flow characteristics during reassembly were characterized by a decrease in torque. This study provides a promising approach for the development of synthetic adhesives with reassembly ability, which has important implications for the field of bonding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve the stability of polymer gel profile control agents used in high‐temperature and high‐salinity reservoirs, the temperature‐resistant and salinity‐resistant polymer (TSP) was synthesized from acrylamide (AM), 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) via free radical polymerization reaction using initiator. The TSP showed excellent salt resistance and thermal stability because of the introduction of the sulfonic acid group, hydrophobic group, and rigid group. Furthermore, a novel elevated temperature hydrogel (ETG) for profile control was prepared using TSP, a crosslinker hexamethylenetetramine‐hydroquinone (HMTA‐HQE), and silica nanoparticles as an enhancer. The formula of ETG was as follows: 0.5 wt% TSP + 0.3 wt% HMTA‐HQE + 0.2 wt% silica nanoparticles (enhancer). SEM and FTIR analyzed the micromorphology and composition of ETG. Under high temperature and salinity (110°C, 85702 mg/L), the apparent viscosity of ETG reached up to 3 × 104 mPa·s, and controllable gelation time was 10–20 h. After aging for 120 days at 110°C, the viscosity retention rate was more than 75%, indicating ETG had better thermal stability. Moreover, the plugging ratio of ETG reached up to 97.8%, while the plugging ratio of the conventional HPAM hydrogel was only 81.2%, which indicated that ETG also had good plugging performance. The study was conducted from August, 2021 to March, 2022 at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Birsa Agricultural University, Kanke, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India to develop shoe polish based on Karanj oil and the impact of shellac and gum arabic in its formulation. The standardized composition of shoe polish was obtained as 3 part oil and onepart bee wax containing other elements like colour pigment, shellac, gum arabic and turpentine oil. To overcome the problem of colour, sixteen various combinations of shellac and gum arabic were carried out for improvement of colour in each case of black and brown polish. The developed shoe polish was tested for texture, applicability, spreadability, and ease in taking out the material. Colour was recorded with a gloss meter. The highest gloss meter reading i.e. 10.62 GU was recorded in the case of a black shoe polish containing shellac and gum arabic each weighing 0.75 g whereas a sample containing 1.25 g shellac and gum arabic each showed the lowest gloss reading of 3.88 GU. In the case of brown polish, the highest gloss meter reading i.e. 5.24 GU was recorded in the case of a sample containing shellac and gum arabic weighing 1.25 g each, and the lowest was observed in the case of the sample containing shellac weighing 0.5g and gum arabic weighing 0.75 g. Based on gloss value and sensory evaluation, the developed sample was found very near to standard brand shoe polish (Cherry) except that it gave an oily appearance initially. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current global warming challenges have drawn refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). R32 (difluoromethane) is the most promising low-GWP refrigerant and is slightly flammable. The addition of a flame retardant to HFC-32 can improve its flammability. Trifluoroiodomethane (R13I1) is a flame retardant with an extremely low GWP that can be employed as a refrigerant component. This experimental study investigates the effect of dispersing aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles in the compressor oil with varying concentrations of 0.045, 0.09, 0.135, and 0.18 vol% in the Polyol Ester (POE) oil on its thermal, tribological, and rheological properties as well as on the overall performance of a vapour compression air conditioning system using ultra-low GWP mixture refrigerants consisting of R32, R161, and R13I1 as the working fluid. The thermophysical properties of the mixture refrigerant have been calculated using REFPROP (NIST properties of fluid reference). The mixture refrigerant (R32/R161/R13I1) performed better in alumina nanolubricant and the comparison has been made with reference to the base lubricant (POE) in terms of power consumption, COP, coefficient of friction, and cooling capacity. The results showed that the coefficient of performance (COP) and cooling capacity increased by 32.6% and 11.7%, respectively. The maximum power saving is up to 16.1%, and the coefficient of friction is reduced by 32.4%. The highest recorded thermal conductivity reached 22.5% at 343.15 K and a volume concentration of 0.18%, compared to base oil at 303.15 K. The air conditioning system's performance showed improvement at an optimal concentration of 0.135 vol%. Because the requirements of environmental protection are becoming strict, the preparation of petroleum products such as white oil needs to be harmless. In order to produce high-grade white oil products, it is necessary to study the medium-pressure hydrogenation technology and the suitable high-activity hydrogenation catalyst. The medium-pressure hydrogenation technology is proposed to produce white oil by a one-stage hydrogenation process under 7-8 MPa hydrogen partial pressure. The paper optimized the optimum conditions for medium-pressure hydrogenation of white oil. The initial reaction temperature was 210°C. The reaction pressure was 8 MPa. The liquid space velocity was 0.4 h-1. The hydrogen oil ratio was 500:1 V/V. The catalyst life evaluation experiment was carried out. The lubricating greases employed in this study were formulated with polyalphaolefin (PAO) 100 as the base oil and 12-lithium hydroxystearate as the thickener. The sol-gel method was used to produce the LaF3 nanoadditives. The oleic acid-treated LaF3 (i.e., OA-LaF3) and carboxylic acid-treated MWCNTs (i.e., COOH-MWCNTs) were blended in the formulated grease samples and used as nanoadditives. The detailed microstructural and chemical properties of chemically treated nanoadditives were investigated using HRTEM, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses. Using a four-ball tester, the effect of different concentrations of nanoadditives on the tribo-performance of greases was investigated. Tribo-test results revealed the role of nanoadditives in PAObased grease lubrication performance. COOH-MWCNTs and OA-LaF3 nanoadditives outperformed PAO grease in terms of physicochemical and triboperformance for steel-steel tribo-pair. The improved tribo-performance is attributed to the formation of tribo-film on the contact interfaces via nanoadditives. The development of tribo-film was confirmed by XPS analysis of worn surfaces. Nanoparticle incorporation plays an active feature in heat transfer, ultimately enhancing the tribological process under boundary conditions of heat stress. Nanoparticles like zinc oxide (ZnO) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are well known to significantly affect the cooling and lubrication applications, resulting in improved heat transfer and kinematic viscosity. The present work investigates the tribological performance of ZnO/MWCNTs hybrids as lubricant additive in the paraffinic type of mineral base oil of Group I (SN150) engine oil. The chemical composition of the modified and unmodified oil was examined by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A ring-ondisk tribotester was performed to investigate the tribological behaviour through the linear reciprocating mechanism alloy-steel contacts. The worn steel alloy surfaces morphology and chemical compositions were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and 3D optical profilometer. Different ZnO/MWCNTs nanomaterial volumetric concentrations were examined in order to determine the most effective performance. According to the tribological results, ZnO/MWCNTs hybrid nanomaterials in the engine oil were found to have significantly higher friction temperature and antiwear capability than the base oil. A volumetric concentration of 3.00 wt% ZnO/MWCNTs nanomaterials to SN150 engine oil imparted excellent wear protection to the steel sample than the pure SN150 base oil. Based on the statistical analysis, the modified oil anti-wear performance was enhanced by reducing the wear loss by 80.5% and friction temperature by 55.8°C compared with the oil base. Wax deposition in oil wells reduces oil production efficiency, increases maintenance costs, and raises the occurrence rate of accidents. Traditional methods have difficulty accurately predicting wax deposition in oil wells, and oil fields typically adopt a passive response mode, resulting in decreased efficiency. Hence, this study proposed a wax deposition prediction method for oil wells based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network to effectively extract and utilize the information content of historical dynamic monitoring data of oil wells and achieve real-time prediction and early warning for wax deposition. A predictive indicator system for predicting failures caused by wax deposition in pumping wells was established, and a wax deposition prediction dataset was prepared by integrating and normalizing collected operational data of oil wells and conducting sensitive parameter analysis. The Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm was used to optimize the constructed LSTM prediction model, and the optimized LSTM model was trained and tested using data from the prediction dataset. The accuracy of the model was confirmed through experiments. Results demonstrate that the proposed LSTM-based wax deposition prediction method in this study achieves R-squared values of 0.8453 and 0.9439 on the test set before and after optimization, respectively, effectively improving the accuracy of wax deposition trend prediction in oil wells. This study can assist in predicting wax deposition trends in oil wells, enabling oil field workers to formulate preventive measures in advance, thereby reducing production costs and the occurrence rate of accidents. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to investigate the effects of pistachio oil (7.5 and 15%), xanthan gum (0 and 0.3%), distillated monoglyceride (0.5 and 1%), and cocoa butter (7.5 and 15%) on the sensorial descriptors of spread based on pistachio oil. The response variables were the most significant spread texture attributes: hardness, graininess, meltability, adhesiveness to spoon, adhesiveness to mouth, spreadability, fluidity, and oiliness. PCA revealed that the first two principal components explained 90% or more of the variance between the data. The first principal component was dominated by the descriptors' adhesiveness and hardness on the positive side and the descriptors' oiliness and fluidness on the negative side. The descriptor spreadability had a high positive loading on the second principal component. Herschel–Balkley and power law models were fitted to confirm the sensory evaluation results on different formulations. In the current research, the power law model seemed to be more accurate for fitting the samples. In terms of the selected texture attributes determined by the sensory evaluation, using component plot, the optimum combination of variables was found as follows: 15 pistachio oil, 7.5% cocoa butter, 0.3% xanthan gum, and 1% distilled monoglyceride that produced desirable spreads that mimic commercial spread. Biliary atresia is a rare infant disease that predisposes patients to liver transplantation and death if not treated in time. However, early diagnosis is challenging because the clinical manifestations and laboratory tests of biliary atresia overlap with other cholestatic diseases. Therefore, it is very important to develop a simple, safe and reliable method for the early diagnosis of biliary atresia. Herein, a novel NIR-II fluorescence probe, HZL2, with high quantum yield, excellent biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity and rapid excretion through the liver and gallbladder was developed based on the oil/water partition coefficient and permeability. A simple fecal sample after injection of HZL2 can be used to efficiently identify the success of the mouse model of biliary atresia for the first time, allowing for an early diagnosis of the disease. This study not only developed a simple and safe method for the early diagnosis of biliary atresia with great potential in clinical translation but also provides a research tool for the development of pathogenesis and therapeutic medicines for biliary atresia. After entering the ultra-high water cut stage of multilayer oil reservoirs, the remaining oil is highly dispersed. Due to the continuous development of general water injection, the generation of advantageous channels makes interlayer contradictions more prominent, and the differences in the utilization between different layers are even greater. After the water drive development of multilayer oil reservoirs enters the ultra-high water cut stage, the development effect deteriorates year by year. Layer restructuring is an effective method of improving the water injection development effect and increasing the degree of utilization. In essence, its goal is to achieve balanced utilization for multiple development layers to increase the degree of recovery. This article mainly employs physical simulation experiments combined with reservoir numerical simulation technology to jointly study the effects of different equilibrium production strategies in the ultra-high water cut period of multilayer oil reservoirs and their mechanism of action based on the remaining oil distribution field and streamline field. As a specific implementation, we use large-plate physical simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the rotational injection and production strategy, and to supplement the physical simulation experiment with a reservoir numerical simulation model, we analyze the mechanism of different balanced production strategies. The research results for the combination of physical simulation experiments and numerical simulation experiments show that the combined strategy of rotary injection and rotary production is the most effective method for use in multilayer and ultra-high water cut oil reservoirs. The displacement effect of the high-permeability layer is better, and the increase in the recovery degree is relatively large, while the displacement effect of the low-permeability layer is relatively weak. After conventional water drive oil recovery, the remaining oil mainly exists in the edge area of the research area. However, the use of three-dimensional well network injection wheel recovery changes the streamline field, produces the effect of fluid flow diversion, expands the water drive sweep coefficient, and improves the recovery rate. Chemical plugging can effectively replace water drive oil recovery and will become the main method for improving the recovery rate of such reservoirs in the lower part. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The protection and decorative value of raw wood-based boards with various coatings can be enhanced during the service life of furniture using surface treatment techniques. In this study, selected transparent, pigmented polyurethane email finish and thin foils, commonly used in furniture, were used for surface treatments of medium-density fibreboards with a thickness of 18 mm. Water-borne finish with polyurethane–acrylate resin, solvent-borne finish with polyacrylate resin, and finish based on native oil and waxes, as well as pigmented polyurethane email finish, were used on veneered medium-density fibreboards. The thin foils (polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, and lacquered acryl film) were used for raw medium-density fibreboards. Several resistance surface properties were investigated. It was found that the hardness and resistance to impact were very much related to the interactions between the coating film or thin foil and the substrate. The type of surface finish had a substantial impact on the coating and foil's resistance qualities, such as resistance to mould and cold liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) has become imperative across various domains, including the oil and gas industry, which covers several fields, including reservoirs, drilling, and production. In oil and gas production, conventional methods, such as reservoir simulation, are used to predict the oil production rate. This simulation requires comprehensive data, so each process step takes a long time and is expensive. AI is urgently needed and can be a solution in this case. This research aims to apply AI techniques to forecast oil production rates based on water injection rates from two injection wells. Three wells are connected with a direct line drive pattern. Three different AI methods were applied, including multiple linear polynomial regression (PR), multiple linear regression (MLR), and artificial neural networks (ANN) in constructing oil production rate prediction models. Actual field data of 1180 data are used, including water injection rate data from two injection wells and oil production history data from one production well. The dataset has been split randomly into 80% training and 20% allocated for testing subsets. The training data is used to build predictive models, while the testing data is used to validate model performance. Comparative analysis selects the model with the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) and the highest R2 test value. Results demonstrate that the ANN model achieves the smallest Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.142 and the highest R2 test value of 16.2%, outperforming the PR and MLR methods. The main goal of this research is to compare the rheological behavior of hybrid nano lubricants (HNLs) with different composition ratios in a base oil. The purpose of the comparison is to determine the HNL with the best lubrication performance at the start of the vehicle. Theoretical methods have confirmed the non-Newtonian behavior in different laboratory conditions. HNLs with the composition ratio of 30:70 and 25:75 had the highest percentage of increase and decrease in viscosity, respectively 34.97% and − 1.85% at T = 55 °C, shear rate SR = 6665 s−1 and solid volume fraction SVF = 1% and T = 5 °C, SR = 3999 s−1 and SVF = 0.05%. To predict the viscosity of the desired HNL, in the RSM, a special model with an accuracy of R2 = 0.9997 has been used. The margin of deviation (MOD) is determined in the range of − 3.43% < MOD < 4.75%. Viscosity sensitivity analysis shows that the greatest sensitivity will result from SVF changes at high SVFs. The experimental results of this study will introduce the optimal nano polishing to the craftsmen, and the theoretical part of this study will save the researchers from spending time and excessive economic costs. An operando analysis method has been established for evaluating the interfacial structure of an adsorbed layer formed by an additive on a metal surface under fluid lubricated conditions. A parallel-face narrow gap viscometer installed in an energy-resolved neutron reflectometer is used to evaluate the change in the interfacial structure under high shear. The viscometer was designed to operate at a high shear rate while maintaining a µm-order constant gap between two parallel surfaces. When an additive-free base oil was sandwiched in the gap, the neutron reflectivity profiles without and with upper surface rotation were the same. This demonstrates that the reflectivity profiles can be accurately measured regardless of whether the upper surface is rotated. When a base oil containing a polymethacrylate-based additive was sandwiched in the gap, both the thickness and density of the adsorbed additive layer in the rotation (shear field) condition were lower than those in the non-rotation (static) condition. This demonstrates that the proposed method can be used to analyse the structural changes in the adsorbed layer formed by an oil additive on a surface. The current work aims to formulate a stable cosmetic nanoemulsion using nature-derived ingredients such as surfactin (a lipopeptide-type biosurfactant produced by Bacillus sp) as an emulsifier, plant-based essential oil as a bioactive ingredient, and coconut oil as the base oil using high-energy ultrasonication method. To accomplish a stable nanoemulsion formulation, experiments with varying combinations of surfactin concentration, essential oil concentration, ultrasonication time, and amplitude were performed. Statistical analysis of samples, based on the responses such as visual observation, droplet size, and polydispersity index, facilitated proper segregation of best-performing samples from those of poorly performing. Nanoemulsions formulated using optimal conditions of oil-to-surfactant ratio (O/S) of 7.4:1 (%w/w), ultrasonication amplitude of 40%, and ultrasonication time of 4.5 min showed greater stability with average droplets size of 170 ± 12 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.17 ± 0.01 and zeta potential of −56 ± 0.5 mV. The nanoemulsion remained completely stable with no sign of phase separation during the test period of 200 days. Further, the performance of samples toward different stability tests such as heat treatment, centrifugation test, NaCl treatment was satisfactory. In addition, nanoemulsion exhibited significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus. Thus, the current study demonstrates the imminent potential of surfactin as a bio-emulsifier in skin-care cosmetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanofluids based on vegetal oil with different wt.% of carbon nanotubes (CNT), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and its hybrid (h-BN@CNT) were produced to investigate the effects of these nano-additives on the thermal conductivity and rheological properties of nanofluids. Stable suspensions of these oil/nanostructures were produced without the use of stabilizing agents. The dispersed nanostructures were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, while the thermal conductivity and rheological characteristics were studied by a transient hot-wire method and steady-state flow tests, respectively. Increases in thermal conductivity of up to 39% were observed for fluids produced with 0.5 wt.% of the hybrid nanomaterials. As for the rheological properties, it was verified that both the base fluid and the h-BN suspensions exhibited Newtonian behavior, while the presence of CNT modified this tendency. This change in behavior is attributed to the hydrophobic character of both CNT and the base oil, while h-BN nanostructures have lip-lip "bonds", giving it a partial ionic character. However, the combination of these nanostructures was fundamental for the synergistic effect on the increase of thermal conductivity with respect to their counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
