Abstract

The disposal of flushing oil from lubricating industry possesses an environmental threat and incur a huge financial impact to the manufacturer. Hence, it is vital to recycle back the flushing oil to reduce environmental impact, costing, and dependency on nonrenewable energy (petroleum). The purpose of this work is to formulate and analyse multipurpose grease by using flushing oil (waste). In this study, four lithium-based grease was formulated by using gear flushing oil, engine flushing oils, and mineral base oil. Then, the physicochemical characteristics of the formulated greases were analysed by the dropping point (ASTM D-2265), cone penetration (ASTM D-217), oil separation (ASTM D-1742), and rheology tests according to the standard methods. Next, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis were utilised to investigate the ageing of the formulated greases. The results obtained show that all formulations are comparable in dropping point, NLGI, and oil separation. However, GFO has the highest thermal stability with an onset temperature of 304.5°C, where no oxidation occurs in all formulated greases. Nonetheless, further research is needed to acquire a complete understanding of the processes and develop a competitive multipurpose grease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
