Abstract: In this paper, we study cratering and crater erasure processes and provide an age estimate for the near-Earth Asteroid (25143) Itokawa, the target of the mission Hayabusa, based on its crater history since the time when it was formed in the main belt by catastrophic disruption or experienced a global resetting event. Using a model which was applied to the study of the crater history of Gaspra, Ida, Mathilde and Eros [O''Brien, D.P., Greenberg, R., Richardson, J.E., 2006. Icarus 183, 79–92], we calculate the time needed to accumulate the craters on Itokawa''s surface, taking into account several processes which can affect crater formation and crater erasure on such a low-gravity object, such as seismic shaking. We use two models of the projectile population and two scaling laws to relate crater diameter to projectile size. Both models of the projectile population provide similar results, and depending on the scaling law used, we find that the time necessary to accumulate Itokawa''s craters was at least , and maybe as long as 1 Gyr. Moreover, using the same model and similar parameters (scaled accordingly), we provide a good match not only to Itokawa''s craters, but also to those of Eros, which has also been imaged at high enough resolution to give crater counts in a similar size range to those on Itokawa. We show that, as for Eros, the lack of small craters on Itokawa is consistent with erasure by seismic shaking, although for Itokawa, the pronounced deficiency of the smallest craters ( in diameter) requires another process or event in addition to just seismic shaking. A small body such as Itokawa is highly sensitive to specific events that may occur during its history. For example, the two parts of Itokawa, called head and body, may well have joined each other by a low-velocity impact within the last hundred thousand years [Scheeres, D.J., Abe, M., Yoshikawa, M., Nakamura, R., Gaskell, R.W., Abell, P.A., 2007. In addition to providing an erasure mechanism for small craters, the proposed timescale of that event is consistent with the timescale necessary in our model to form the current, depleted population of just a few small () craters on Itokawa, suggesting that it may be the explanation for the discrepancy between Itokawa''s cratering record and that obtained from our equilibrium seismic shaking model. Other explanations for the depletion of the smallest craters on Itokawa, such as armoring by boulders lying on the surface, cannot be ruled out. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Awake bruxism is defined as the awareness of jaw clenching. Its prevalence is reported to be 20% among the adult population. Awake bruxism is mainly associated with nervous tic and reactions to stress. The physiology and pathology of awake bruxism is unknown, although stress and anxiety are considered to be risk factors. During sleep, awareness of tooth grinding (as noted by sleep partner or family members) is reported by 8% of the population. Sleep bruxism is a behaviour that was recently classified as a ‘sleep-related movement disorder’. There is limited evidence to support the role of occlusal factors in the aetiology of sleep bruxism. Recent publications suggest that sleep bruxism is secondary to sleep-related micro-arousals (defined by a rise in autonomic cardiac and respiratory activity that tends to be repeated 8–14 times per hour of sleep). The putative roles of hereditary (genetic) factors and of upper airway resistance in the genesis of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity and of sleep bruxism are under investigation. Moreover, rhythmic masticatory muscle activity in sleep bruxism peaks in the minutes before rapid eye movement sleep, which suggests that some mechanism related to sleep stage transitions exerts an influence on the motor neurons that facilitate the onset of sleep bruxism. Finally, it remains to be clarified when bruxism, as a behaviour found in an otherwise healthy population, becomes a disorder, i.e. associated with consequences (e.g. tooth damage, pain and social/marital conflict) requires intervention by a clinician. During the process of growth and development, the digastric muscle is subjected to marked functional changes, including the change from suckling to mastication. In particular, because the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, which is one of the suprahyoid muscles, plays an important role in mastication. Therefore, this muscle seems to undergo a marked functional change before and after weaning. However, the details remain unknown. Here, to clarify the changes in the muscle fibre characteristics of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle before and after weaning, we examined myosin heavy chain isoforms at the protein (immunohistochemistry) and mRNA (transcription) levels. As a control, the changes in the muscle fibre characteristics of the sternohyoid muscle, which is anatomically aligned in the same direction as the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, were analyzed. The results showed that, in the anterior belly of the digastric muscle that is involved in mandibular movements in mice, the ratio of a fast-contraction isoform with strong contractile force increased after weaning. We believe that this occurred in response to a functional change from suckling to mastication. On the other hand, there was little change in the composition of sternohyoid muscle. Background Effects of long-term administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on the colon have not been well characterized. Aim To investigate colonoscopic findings and prevalence of adverse events following long-term use of NSAIDs. Methods The study included 425 patients (mean 66.4 years) treated for over one year with NSAIDs, and 2125 age- and sex-matched patients without NSAIDs as controls. Eligible candidates were selected by medical record review for underlying diseases, pre-endoscopic symptoms, category of NSAIDs used, and duration of use. We used endoscopy to study lesion characteristics. Results The occurrence rate of colonic lesions or bleeding in the NSAIDs user (13/425, 3.1%) was higher than that in controls (28/2125, 1.3%) ( p = 0.017). Colitis was found in 10 of the 13 patients. The sigmoid colon, descending colon or both (70.0%) was commonly involved, and showed segmental ischemic colitis features in 8 of the 13 patients (61.5%). Among these, duration of use ranged from 1-30 years (mean 7.8). Nine of 13 patients (69.2%) took low-dose aspirin. Conclusion The prevalence of colonic lesions in long-term NSAIDs users is much lower than that of upper gastrointestinal side effects, but higher than that of colonic lesions in non-NSAIDs users. Objective: The purpose of this study was to clarify the positional relationship between the crown contour and the pulp chamber using micro-CT system for restorations of maxillary second deciduous molar. Methods: Five maxillary second deciduous molar teeth each from the deciduous dentition and the mixed dentition periods were used. The positional relationship between the crown contour and pulp chamber was three-dimensionally observed by micro-CT. In addition, the thickness of the dentin at each of the pulp horns and the volume ratio of the pulp chamber against the whole crown were measured. Results: In relationship to the crown contour and the pulp chamber, the pulp horn of the mesiobuccal cusp showed greatest protrusion and eminent swelling of its mesial wall in both the deciduous dentition and the mixed dentition periods. Furthermore, the pulp chamber was shifted to the mesial side. The volume ratio of the pulp chamber to the whole crown, the ratio in the mixed dentition period showed to be significantly smaller than in the deciduous dentition period. The dentin thickness at the mesiobuccal pulp horn was the thinest. Conclusions: These results suggest that in preparation of cavities in maxillary second deciduous molars, care is necessary not to expose of the mesiobuccal pulp horn. To analyse the effects of small-scale dams on fish communities, species diversity, population density, biomass, migration over dams and trophic relationships were investigated in the above- and below-dam sections of three Japanese streams. The dams were 1·5–3·9 m high, constructed within 400 m of the sea, and had no impoundment or fishway. Fish communities were mainly composed of diadromous fishes. Of the 17 species sampled, only a few species of gobies, Rhinogobius spp. and Gymnogobius spp. were able to climb and migrate upstream over the dams. Consequently the number of species, and total density and biomass of fishes below the dams was high, but low above the dams. One of the most dominant fish below dams, Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, predominantly fed on benthic algae, whereas other fishes preyed on benthic invertebrates. Trophic relationships above dams were very simple, the few species of gobies preying on chironomid larvae and other aquatic invertebrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The kinetics of sp3 to sp2 structural conversion in tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films induced by sample irradiation with an electron beam of transmission electron microscope was studied by systematically measuring the temporal evolution of the graphitic phase detected by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The results analyzed in the framework of the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami model indicates that the phase front velocity increases in proportion to the irradiation beam current density, providing an experimental support for the notion that the effect is caused by an electronic excitation effect. It was inferred from the experimentally assessed kinetic order index that the three-dimensional growth of graphitic phases is enhanced by electronic excitations. BACKGROUND: The pharmacologic actions of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) are mediated through specific E-prostanoid (EP)-1, EP-2, EP-3, and EP-4 receptors. In this study, we determined which PGE(2) receptor subtype(s) contribute to the prevention of allergen-induced bronchoconstriction. METHODS: We assessed the effects of these receptor agonists in ovalbumin (OA)-sensitized guinea pigs. The prostaglandin E receptor-subtype agonists tested were ONO-DI-004 (EP-1), ONO-AE1-259 (EP-2), ONO-AE-248 (EP-3), ONO-AE1-329 (EP-4), and sulprostone (EP-1 and EP-3) [Ono Pharmaceutical Company; Osaka, Japan]. We treated the animals with either PGE(2) or these agonists 15 min before OA challenge and measured respiratory resistance at 15 min, 1 h, and 3 h. RESULTS: Allergen-induced bronchoconstriction was significantly (p < 0.01) suppressed at doses > 85 nmol/kg of PGE(2). The respiratory resistance elevations 15 min after OA challenge were significantly (p < 0.01) suppressed by preadministration of EP-2 and EP-4 agonists, but airway responsiveness to inhaled methacholine did not improve. EP-1, EP-3, or EP-1/EP-3 agonists had no effect on any parameter. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that inhibition of OA-induced bronchoconstriction by PGE(2) acts through EP-2 and EP-4 receptors. STUDY OBJECTIVES: Cysteinyl leukotrienes (cysLTs) are strong bronchoconstrictive mediators that play a key role in asthma inflammation. They act through specific receptors including cysLT type 1 receptor (CysLT1R) and cysLT type 2 receptor (CysLT2R). Although these two receptors are co-expressed on inflammatory cells, little is known about CysLT2R in patients with asthma. The aims of this study were to investigate the changes in cysLT receptors (CysLTRs) during asthma exacerbations and to determine which cytokine modulates CysLTR expression on eosinophils. METHODS: We assessed protein expression and messenger RNA of CysLT1R and CysLT2R in peripheral blood eosinophils and measured urinary leukotriene E(4) levels in 36 patients with stable asthma, 23 subjects with asthma exacerbation, and 15 healthy subjects. We also evaluated the modulation of these receptors by interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, interferon (IFN)-gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in cultured eosinophils. RESULTS: Expression of both CysLT1R and CysLT2R on eosinophils during asthma exacerbations was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in stable asthma and healthy subjects. A greater expression of CysLT2R in exacerbation was found in nonatopic asthmatics. Only IFN-gamma up-regulated cell-surface expression of CysLT2R in a dose-dependent manner and enhanced messenger RNA levels. No cytokine affected CysLT1R expression or messenger RNA level. CONCLUSIONS: CysLT2R expression on eosinophils was increased in patients, especially in nonatopic subjects, during asthma exacerbation, and was up-regulated by IFN-gamma; therefore we speculate that a pathway through CysLT2R might modulate exacerbations of asthma. A microbeam analysis system at Tohoku University has been improved in detection efficiency for application to single cell analysis. The system is applicable to STIM analysis and to simultaneous PIXE and RBS analysis. Background: Signalling of angiotensin II via angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1) promotes cardiac and renal fibrosis, but its role in lung fibrosis is little understood. Using a rat bleomycin (BLM) induced model of pulmonary fibrosis, we examined the expression of AT1 in the lung and the effect of an AT1 antagonist on pulmonary fibrosis.Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were given 0.3 mg/kg BLM intratracheally. Two days earlier they had received 10 mg/kg/day of the AT1 antagonist candesartan cilexetil mixed in the drinking water. AT1 expression in the lungs was examined by immunohistochemistry and immunoblot methods. The effect of the AT1 antagonist on pulmonary fibrosis was studied by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, histopathology, and hydroxyproline assay.Results: Immunohistochemical studies showed overexpression of AT1 in inflammatory immune cells, alveolar type II cells, and fibroblasts. A quantitative assay for AT1 showed that AT1 expression was significantly upregulated in cells from BAL fluid after day 3 and in the lung homogenates after day 21. Candesartan cilexetil significantly inhibited the increase in total protein and albumin, as well as the increase in total cells and neutrophils in BAL fluid. On day 21 candesartan cilexetil also ameliorated morphological changes and an increased amount of hydroxyproline in lung homogenates. In addition, BLM increased the expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 in BAL fluid on day 7; this increase was significantly reduced by candesartan cilexetil.Conclusion: AT1 expression is upregulated in fibrotic lungs. Background: The circadian variation in urinary leukotriene E(4) (LTE(4)) excretion with a morning acrophase has recently been reported in nocturnal asthma (NA); however, the effects of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on this circadian rhythmicity of leukotriene (LT) in patients with NA are controversial.Methods: We first measured peak expiratory flow (PEF), urinary LTE(4), 11-dehydro-thromboxane B(2) (TXB(2)), and creatinine levels six times every 4 h for 24 h in two groups: patients with mild-to-moderate, steroid-naive NA (n = 10, group A), and patients with severe NA treated with high-dose ICS (n = 10, group B). Next, group A patients received 2 weeks of treatment with 800 microg/d of inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP), and we compared the measured parameters before and after treatment.Results: In group A, a circadian rhythm in urinary LTE(4) with peak levels at approximately 4 AM associated with reduced PEF was observed. Group B had suppression of urinary LTE(4) excretion and had no circadian rhythmicity, as seen in group A, despite a dip in PEF at 4 AM. A high dose of FP in group A significantly (p < 0.05) reduced LTE(4) levels and abolished the circadian rhythm, as well as improving PEF. We found no significant difference in the circadian rhythm of urinary 11-dehydro-TXB(2) between groups A and B, and high-dose FP partially decreased urinary 11-dehydro-TXB(2) levels but not significantly.Conclusions: A high-dose of ICS reduced urinary LTE(4) levels and abolished their circadian variation in patients with asthma, suggesting that LT might contribute to the mechanism of NA. Recent studies on the cytoskeleton of osteoblasts have been made mainly using cultured cells. However, the morphology of cultured cells may be altered during subculture. Therefore, cytoskeletal changes of calvarial osteoblasts were investigated in situ by electron microscopy using the detergent perfusion method to preserve cell morphology as well as selectively observing the cytoskeleton in the presence of a high concentration of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the calvarial periphery in rats. Rats were perfused with a mixture of Triton X-100 and glutaraldehyde, then the cytoskeleton was observed by transmission electron microscopy. In osteoblasts of the control group, thick bundles of microfilaments ran parallel to the long axis of the cells immediately below the cell membrane adjacent to the osteoid layer. In contrast, in the osteoblasts of the PGE2-administered group, the external morphology was changed to an asteroid or cubic shape, and thick bundles of microfilaments immediately below the cell membrane adjacent to the osteoid were not observed, although microfilament fibres, with a diameter of 5–6 nm, were observed in the cytoplasm. MAGDAS PEN was established on 19th September 2019 as one of the MAGDAS observatory arrays located at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) (5.15°, 100.50°). The main objective of the MAGDAS project is to monitor global electromagnetic and the ambient plasma density in the geospace environment. This installation has contributed to a better understanding of the Sun-Earth coupling system. This paper presents the installation process of one of the MAGDAS magnetometers named YU-8 T magnetic sensor and provides a preliminary analysis of geomagnetic HDZ components amplitude-time that was observed at PEN station. A one-month HDZ-geomagnetic field data was processed from 1st November to 30th November 2019. The daily variations with a consistent pattern in delta H geomagnetic field components are observed throughout the day with eastward electric field effects that are observed during solar peak hours. The delta H-component gradually increases around 0700LT and reaches the maximum reading at 1300LT with a range of value ~ 40-70nT. The value slowly decreases that started from 1400LT until the night time. The reading during the night time shows a constant variation with magnitude varies in between −10nT to + 10nT. The average H-component value of the night time is used as the baseline for the observation system. Overall, the observed trends portray a good sign of solar quiet field and Sq with no solar-terrestrial disturbances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The higher current density of IGBTs has made it difficult to achieve high short-circuit withstand capability as well as good conduction characteristics. Therefore, a fast and reliable protection system is required for the safe operation of IGBT. This paper determines the short-circuit safe protection area (SCSPA) for advanced IGBT that has no short-circuit withstand capability and proposes the protection system satisfied this SCSPA. The fast protection is brought by PCB Rogowski coil and digital gate driver using digital circuit (FPGA). Bambara groundnut is a leguminous crop that originated in West Africa. It is a drought-tolerant crop and has the potential to provide improved food and nutritional security in the dry areas of Africa. However, the plant contains anti-nutritional factors that affect its food value chain. The objective of this study was to assess the content of four major anti-nutritional factors in 30 bambara groundnut accessions in South Africa. The seeds of the bambara groundnut landraces were ground to make a fine powder and assessed for condensed tannins (CTs), phytic acid phosphate (PAP), polyphenol, and trypsin inhibitor content. Each assay was done in triplicate. The content of the four anti-nutritional compounds varied widely among the bambara groundnut accessions. The mean values for CTs ranged between 0.2 and 6.2 mg/g of prodephinidin equivalent, whereas that of the PAP was between 1.4 and 4.9 mg/g. A low mean polyphenol content of 0.4 mg/g of GA (gallic acid) equivalent was observed among the accessions. The level of trypsin inhibitor ranged from 5.3 to 73.4 TI/mg. With the exception of CTs and trypsin inhibitor, no significant correlation was observed among the four anti-nutritional factors assessed in this study. The article presents a study which characterized polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers for pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha using next-generation sequencing approach. Topics discussed include distribution of the pink salmon, finding on the developed markers with tri- or tetranucleotide repeat motif, and the potential of the developed new loci in the conservation management of pink salmon.

The effect of light on magnetic initial permeability (the so-called photomagnetic effect) and photoinduced disaccommodation were studied in samples of yttrium iron garnet over the temperature range 77-300 K. The samples studied were bulk crystalline, produced by the floating zone method and the flux method, polycrystalline, produced by the usual sintering method, and single-crystalline films, produced by in situ liquid-phase epitaxis. One or both of the studied phenomena were observed in our experimental samples. To explain the experimental results, we suggest there is photoinduced structural distortion around oxygen vacancies due to a photoinduced change of charge imbalance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of the single-crystal CeF $$_{3}$$ precisely measured in external magnetic field-directed B $$\vert \vert $$ c and B $$\bot $$ c in wide ranges of temperatures from 1.8 to 300 K and magnetic field strength of 0-40 kG. Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and Ce $$^{3+}$$ Stark energies of CeF $$_{3}$$ have been calculated in the framework of the crystal field theory; good agreement with the experimental data has been achieved in the whole range of temperatures and magnetic fields without taking into account the mixed-valent Ce $$^{3+}$$ -Ce $$^{4+}$$ behavior or super-exchange interaction of cerium ions that have been proposed before. This work presents a computational study of the retention, reflection, and sputtering processes at amorphous and crystalline lithium surfaces by the impact of low energy (5-100 eV) hydrogen and deuterium atoms and D 2 molecules for a range of incident angles of 0° (normal to the surface) to 85°. Classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed with the reactive bond-order force field (ReaxFF) potentials. Effects of the temperature of the surface slab were also considered. The extent of retention, and the energy and angular distributions of reflected and sputtered atoms were determined. Comparison of the results of these simulations with available experimental data on the sputtering rate for Li atoms is in good agreement for incident angles of 0°, and the simulation results predict significant increase in the sputtering probabilities for incident angles larger than 30°. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from the partial genomic library of the rhinoceros auklet Cerorhinca monocerata. The heterozygosities observed at the isolated loci using eight primer sets in 46 nestlings from one breeding colony in Japan ranged from 0.311 to 0.773, and all but one locus did not deviate from the Hardy–Weinberg expectations. Cross-species amplification in the tufted puffin Fratercula cirrhata was successfully performed using six of the eight primer sets, indicating their applicability to this species. The physicochemical properties of starches extracted from five bambara genotypes were investigated. Bambara starch granules were predominantly oval shaped with a smooth surface and an average size of 26 ± 0.2 μm. The amylose contents (20–35%) varied significantly among genotypes. X-ray diffraction revealed the C-type pattern for all starches with relative crystallinity range: 29–35%. FTIR spectra of bambara starches showed variable peak intensities at 2931, 1655 and 860 cm −1 , which corresponds to C H stretching, H 2 O bending vibrations and C O stretching, respectively. Bambara genotype with the highest amylose content showed the lowest intensity at wavenumber 2931 cm −1 . With the exception of oil absorption which was similar, swelling power, water absorption and paste clarity of starches were significantly different among genotypes. DT + ion irradiation with energy of 0.5 and 1.0 keV was performed on helium pre-irradiated tungsten and the amount of retained tritium and the long-term release of retained tritium in vacuum was investigated using an IP technique and BIXS. Tritium retention and long-term tritium release were significantly influenced by helium pre-irradiation. The amount of retained tritium increased until it reached 1 × 10 17 He/cm 2 , and at 1 × 10 18 He/cm 2 it became smaller compared to 1 × 10 17 He/cm 2 . The amount of retained tritium in tungsten without helium pre-irradiation largely decreased after several weeks preservation in vacuum, and the long-term release rate during vacuum preservation was retarded by helium pre-irradiation. The results indicate that the long-term tritium release and the helium irradiation effect on it should be taken into account for more precise estimation of tritium retention in the long-term use of tungsten in fusion devices. Sound transmission techniques were used to investigate sound velocities and attenuation in an aerogel sample of 3 mm length and 3 mm diameter. This sample was squeezed between a 10 MHz transmitter and receiver quartz. Pulsed measurements were performed during several cool down cycles (300–0.7 K) in vacuum as well as while filling the aerogel with gaseous and liquid 3He up to 29 bar. The striking features of all experiments were that a profound change of the sound mode in the 3He-filled aerogel occurs around 5, 8 and 12 bar, and that neither sound velocity nor absorption in the aerogel has been found very reproducible from cool-down to cool-down. The article presents the study which evaluated the medication adherence for oral and topical remedies of Japanese dermatological patients using the translated version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) and other socioeconomic background factors. In the study, information like smoking habit, alcohol use, and frequency of hospital visits were collected. Based on the results, lower adherence in both oral and topical drug groups was observed in younger subjects.

The article discusses polymorphic microsatellite clones from the grey backed vole, Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae, which is a species with frequent population fluctuations. The authors refer to a preliminary study on ten voles with five of ten microsatellites that are polymorphic. The study observed eighty one voles with five microsatellite alleles at loci differing in number of repeat units. The results of the four loci that were used to estimate the heterozygosity suggested that the vole population is subject to random mating. According to the authors, inbreeding linked to a gene subject to assertive mating was not amplified with primers used.

We investigated the impact of tongue-thrusting on lingual pressure during fluid intake with a straw. In this study, 12 healthy young dentate individuals (two women and 10 men; 19-33 years) were instructed to drink 15 mL of water with a regular drinking straw at 37 °C, when indicated by the investigator. Participants drank after adjusting tongue position to one of the following patterns: (i) Holding the tip of the straw between the lips (Normal Position: NP), (ii) Sticking out the tongue to the vermilion zone of the lower lip and inserting the straw 1 cm past the front teeth (Tongue-thrusting Position: TP). Five recordings were conducted for each participant in a randomised order. To measure tongue pressure during swallowing, a specially designed 0·1-mm thick sensor sheet (Nitta, Osaka, Japan) with a tactile system for measurement of pressure distribution (I-SCAN; Nitta) was used. Duration, maximal magnitude and integrated value of tongue pressure were analysed based on the wave of tongue pressure recorded while water was swallowed. Magnitude, duration and integrated value of tongue pressure were significantly lower in TP than in NP at the median line (Ch1-3). Magnitude and integrated value of tongue pressure at the lateral part of the tongue (Ch5) were significantly lower in TP than in NP. When duration, maximal magnitude and integrated values were compared by channel, no significant differences were observed in NP, but a significant difference was found between Ch3 and the lateral areas Ch4/Ch 5 in TP. When the tongue was thrust forward, movement dynamics of the entire tongue changed and influenced contact between the tongue and palate during liquid intake with a straw. The articular disc of the temporomandibular joint is a constant structure in mammals. According to Parsons' report in 1900, however, it is absent in four animals: the armadillo, two kinds of monotremes and the Tasmanian devil. Thereafter, no research was performed to confirm this observation. The aim of this study was to determine by anatomical and histological examination whether the Tasmanian devil has an articular disc in its temporomandibular joint. Six fresh frozen corpses and one dry skull of Tasmanian devils were obtained from the School of Zoology, University of Tasmania. The corpses were dissected and the morphology of the temporomandibular joint was carefully observed by gross anatomical and histological examination. The structure of the temporomandibular joint of the dry skull was examined macroscopically and by micro-computed tomography. In all cases, absence of the articular disc in the Tasmanian devil temporomandibular joint was morphologically confirmed. The surface layer of both the condyle and the glenoid fossa comprised a thick fibrous tissue. Micro-computed tomography revealed dense and fine trabecular bone in the condyle. The thick fibrous tissue covering the condyle and high-density trabecular bone in the condyle might play a role in absorption against powerful mastication and heavy loading of the Tasmanian devil temporomandibular joint. We investigated whether a bolus injection of 20 ml saline with arm elevation might shorten the onset time of vecuronium administered via a dorsal hand vein. Thirty patients were randomly allocated to the bolus saline group or control group. General anaesthesia was induced and maintained with remifentanil and propofol. Vecuronium 0.1 mg.kg−1 was administered to all patients, followed in the treatment group by bolus injection of 20 ml saline and arm elevation. Response to train-of-four stimulation was measured by acceleromyography at the adductor pollicis muscle. The mean (SD) lag time was 47.2 (14.5) s in the bolus saline group and 67.9 (12.2) s in the control group (p = 0.0002). The time to 95% block of T1 was 104.6 (29.9) s in the bolus saline group and 128.3 (15.8) s in the control group (p = 0.011). Objectives Patients with peripheral facial palsy frequently complain of fluid leakage and food retention during meals. We investigated oral function during eating in adults with peripheral facial palsy. Design A prospective two-phase controlled observational study. Setting Data were collected at the ENT clinic in Nihon University Itabashi Hospital (patients) and Nihon University Dental Hospital (controls) between September 2009 and August 2011 and analysed at the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences in Nihon University School of Dentistry. Participants Fourteen patients with acute idiopathic facial palsy and 14 controls completed Study 1. Sixteen patients with acute idiopathic facial palsy and 16 controls completed Study 2. Main outcome measures In Study 1, oral vestibular cleansing capability was assessed by measuring the amount of rice remaining in the oral vestibule after mastication. In Study 2, masticatory efficiency was evaluated by measuring glucose eluted from gummy jelly during chewing. These oral functions were observed at the first visit and final visit (after patients with facial palsy had recovered). Results Oral vestibular cleansing capability at the first visit was significantly decreased by facial palsy ( P < 0.001 versus healthy volunteers and P < 0.001 versus contralateral side) but recovered as facial muscular function improved ( P = 0.034). There was a significant correlation between improvement in paralysis and decreased food retention ( r = −0.528, P = 0.010). At the first visit, masticatory efficiency on the affected side was significantly lower than that of controls ( P = 0.002) but had mostly recovered after resolution of facial palsy ( P = 0.033). Conclusions Oral functions were decreased by peripheral facial palsy. Oral vestibular cleansing capability was more significantly associated than masticatory efficiency with facial muscle function. The ploidy status of Acipenser mikadoi was examined using nuclear DNA contents, karyotypes and fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) with 5.8S + 28S rDNA as a probe. In flow-cytometrically sorted specimens with 8.2-9.1 pg DNA content per somatic cell, i.e. genetic diploid, the best informative metaphase with 268 chromosomes had 80 biarmed meta- or submetacentric ( M or SM) chromosomes, 48 monoarmed telocentric ( T) chromosomes and 140 microchromosomes. In genetic triploid specimens with 12.6-13.0 pg DNA content, the best informative metaphase with 402 chromosomes showed 120 biarmed M or SM, 72 monoarmed T chromosomes and 210 microchromosomes. The rDNA FISH detected a maximum 18 and 27 signals in the diploid and triploid A. miakdoi, respectively. The obtained findings thus corroborated a clear parallel between nuclear DNA contents and karyological or FISH profiles in the genetic diploid and triploid specimens, suggesting 1.5 times chromosome complements of diploid counterparts or three sets of homologues in the triploid sturgeons. Moreover, the estimated genome size and the observed molecular cytogenetic features in the diploid A. mikadoi strongly suggest that this species is a member of a functional tetraploid group recently proposed in the literature. The programmed cell death 4 (Pdcd4), a translation inhibitor, plays an essential role in tumor suppression, but its role in apoptosis remains unclear. Here we show that Pdcd4 is a critical suppressor of apoptosis by inhibiting the translation of procaspase-3 mRNA. Pdcd4 protein decreased more rapidly through microRNA-mediated translational repression following apoptotic stimuli than did the activation of procaspase-3, cleavage of poly(ADP)ribose polymerase (PARP) by active caspase-3, and nuclear fragmentation. Strikingly, the loss of Pdcd4 by the specific RNA interference increased procaspase-3 expression, leading to its activation and PARP cleavage even without apoptotic stimuli, and sensitized the cells to apoptosis. In adults, the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is usually divided into the upper and lower heads, between which the buccal nerve passes. Using sagittal or horizontal sections of 14 fetuses and seven embryos (five specimens at approximately 20-25 weeks; five at 14-16 weeks; four at 8 weeks; seven at 6-7 weeks), we examined the topographical relationship between the LPM and the buccal nerve. In large fetuses later than 15 weeks, the upper head of the LPM was clearly discriminated from the lower head. However, the upper head was much smaller than the lower head in the smaller fetuses. Thus, in the latter, the upper head was better described as an 'anterior slip' extending from the lower head or the major muscle mass to the anterior side of the buccal nerve. The postero-anterior nerve course seemed to be determined by a branch to the temporalis muscle (i.e. the anterior deep temporal nerve). At 8 weeks, the buccal nerve passed through the roof of the small, fan-like LPM. At 6-7 weeks, the LPM anlage was embedded between the temporobuccal nerve trunk and the inferior alveolar nerve. Therefore, parts of the LPM were likely to 'leak' out of slits between the origins of the mandibular nerve branches at 7-8 weeks, and seemed to grow in size during weeks 14-20 and extend anterosuperiorly along the infratemporal surface of the prominently developing greater wing of the sphenoid bone. Consequently, the topographical relationship between the LPM and the buccal nerve appeared to 'change' during fetal development due to delayed development of the upper head. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: On 15 August 2007, Pisco earthquake (magnitude 8.0) hit the central coast of Peru near the MAGDAS Ancon (ANC) station. Geomagnetic data from ANC and other reference stations have been analyzed to detect any signature related to this great earthquake. Results indicate the presence of annual geomagnetic variations in the vertical component at ANC and Huancayo (HUA) stations (in the vicinity of the epicenter of Pisco earthquake). These variations have a quasi-sinusoidal waveform with amplitudes of about 10 and 5nT for ANC and HUA stations respectively. They appeared clearly during the period preceding the onset of the Pisco earthquake especially at ANC station. By using HUA, Eusebio (EUS) and Kourou (KOU) as reference stations in the vicinity and away from the epicenter of Pisco earthquake, a clear disappearance of the diurnal variation of the vertical component was observed at ANC station during the day of earthquake. Moreover, the Pisco earthquake and another earthquake (on 29 March 2008) near ANC station were found to occur concurrently with the depressions in the polarization ratio (Z/H) of Pc 3 (10–45s) amplitude. Such anomalous variations appear to be a result of changes in the crustal stress field and the lithospheric conductivity in the studied region. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
