Real projective structures on $n$-orbifolds are useful in understanding the space of representations of discrete groups into $\mathrm{SL}(n+1, \mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{PGL}(n+1, \mathbb{R})$. A recent work shows that many hyperbolic manifolds deform to manifolds with such structures not projectively equivalent to the original ones. The purpose of this paper is to understand the structures of ends of real projective $n$-dimensional orbifolds. In particular, these have the radial or totally geodesic ends. In previous papers, we classified properly convex or complete radial ends under suitable conditions. In this paper, we will study radial ends that are convex but not properly convex nor complete affine. The main techniques are the theory of Fried and Goldman on affine manifolds, and a generalization of the work on Riemannian foliations by Molino, Carri\`ere, and so on. We will show that these are quasi-joins of horospheres and totally geodesic radial ends. In this paper we study the set of projective maps between compact proper convex real projective manifolds. We show that this set contains only finitely many distinct homotopy classes and each homotopy class has the structure of a real projective manifold. When the target manifold is strictly convex, our results imply that each non-trivial homotopy class contains at most one projective map. We compute the minimal and the maximal bound on the number of generators of a minimal smooth monomial Togliatti system of forms of degree $d$ in $n+1$ variables, for any $d\ge 2$ and $n\geq 2$. We classify the Togliatti systems with number of generators reaching the lower bound or close to the lower bound. We then prove that if $n=2$ (resp $n=2,3$) all range between the lower and upper bound is covered, while if $n\geq 3$ (resp. $n\ge 4$) there are gaps if we only consider smooth minimal Togliatti systems (resp. if we avoid the smoothness hypothesis). We finally analyze for $n=2$ the Mumford-Takemoto stability of the syzygy bundle associated to smooth monomial Togliatti systems., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures. After having investigated the real conic sections and their isoptic curves in the hyperbolic plane $\bH^2$ we consider the problem of the isoptic curves of generalized conic sections in the extended hyperbolic plane. This topic is widely investigated in the Euclidean plane $\BE^2$ (see for example \cite{Lo}), but in the hyperbolic and elliptic planes there are few results (see \cite{CsSz1}, \cite{CsSz2} and \cite{CsSz3}). In this paper we recall the former results on isoptic curves in the hyperbolic plane geometry, and define the notion of the generalised hyperbolic angle between proper and non-proper straight lines, summarize the notions of generalized hyperbolic conic sections classified by K.~Fladt in \cite{KF1} and \cite{KF2} and gy E.~Moln\'ar in \cite{M81}. Furthermore, we determine and visualize the generalized isoptic curves to all hyperbolic conic sections. We use for the computations the classical models which are based on the projective interpretation of the hyperbolic geometry and in this manner the isoptic curves can be visualized on the Euclidean screen of computer., Comment: 16 pages and 16 figures

We present a local classification of smooth projective surfaces in 3-space via projective transformations in accordance with singularity types of central projections up to codimension 4. We prove that the general fibre of the $i$-th Gauss map has dimension $m$ if and only if at the general point the $(i+1)$-th fundamental form consists of cones with vertex a fixed $\mathbb P^{m-1}$, extending a known theorem for the usual Gauss map. We prove this via a recursive formula for expressing higher fundamental forms. The mobility of a Kaehler metric is the dimension of the space of metrics with which it is c-projectively equivalent. The mobility is at least two if and only if the Kaehler metric admits a nontrivial hamiltonian 2-form. After summarizing this relationship, we present necessary conditions for a Kaehler metric to have mobility at least three: its curvature must have nontrivial nullity at every point. Using the local classification of Kaehler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms, we describe explicitly the Kaehler metrics with mobility at least three and hence show that the nullity condition on the curvature is also sufficient, up to some degenerate exceptions. Supercyclides are surfaces with a characteristic conjugate parametrization consisting of two families of conics. Patches of supercyclides can be adapted to a Q-net (a discrete quadrilateral net with planar faces) such that neighboring surface patches share tangent planes along common boundary curves. We call the resulting patchworks 'supercyclidic nets' and show that every Q-net in $\mathbb{R}P^3$ can be extended to a supercyclidic net. The construction is governed by a multidimensionally consistent 3D system. One essential aspect of the theory is the extension of a given Q-net in $\mathbb{R}P^N$ to a system of circumscribed discrete torsal line systems. We present a description of the latter in terms of projective reflections that generalizes the systems of orthogonal reflections which govern the extension of circular nets to cyclidic nets by means of Dupin cyclide patches., Comment: 34 pages, 20 figures

For a compact, oriented, hyperbolic $n$-manifold $(M,g)$, realised as $M= \Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$ where $\Gamma$ is a torsion-free cocompact subgroup of $SO(n,1)$, we establish and study a relationship between differential geometric cohomology on $M$ and algebraic invariants of the group $\Gamma$. In particular for $\mathbb{F}$ an irreducible $SO(n,1)$-module, we show that the group cohomology with coefficients $H^{\bullet}(\Gamma, \mathbb{F})$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of an appropriate projective BGG complex on $M$. This yields the geometric interpretation that $H^{\bullet}(\Gamma, \mathbb{F})$ parameterises solutions to certain distinguished natural PDEs of Riemannian geometry, modulo the range of suitable differential coboundary operators. Viewed in another direction, the construction shows one way that non-trivial cohomology can arise in a BGG complex, and sheds considerable light on its geometric meaning. We also use the tools developed to give a new proof that $H^{1} (\Gamma, S_{0}^{k} \mathbb{R}^{n+1}) \neq 0$ whenever $M$ contains a compact, orientable, totally geodesic hypersurface. A (flat) affine $3$-manifold is a $3$-manifold with an atlas of charts to an affine space $\mathbb{R}^3$ with transition maps in the affine transformation group $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We will show that a connected closed affine $3$-manifold is either an affine Hopf $3$-manifold or decomposes canonically to concave affine submanifolds with incompressible boundary, toral $\pi$-submanifolds and $2$-convex affine manifolds, each of which is an irreducible $3$-manifold. It follows that if there is no toral $\pi$-submanifold, then $M$ is prime. Consider a manifold with boundary, and such that the interior is equipped with a pseudo-Riemannian metric. We prove that, under mild asymptotic non-vanishing conditions on the scalar curvature, if the Levi-Civita connection of the interior does not extend to the boundary (because for example the interior is complete) whereas its projective structure does, then the metric is projectively compact of order 2; this order is a measure of volume growth toward infinity. The result implies a host of results including that the metric satisfies asymptotic Einstein conditions, and induces a canonical conformal structure on the boundary. Underpinning this work is a new interpretation of scalar curvature in terms of projective geometry. Given a projective structure on a three-dimensional manifold, we find explicit obstructions to the local existence of a Levi-Civita connection in the projective class. These obstructions are given by projectively invariant tensors algebraically constructed from the projective Weyl curvature. Let $\overline{M}$ be a smooth manifold with boundary $\partial M$ and interior $M$. Consider an affine connection $\nabla$ on $M$ for which the boundary is at infinity. Then $\nabla$ is projectively compact of order $\alpha$ if the projective structure defined by $\nabla$ smoothly extends to all of $\overline{M}$ in a specific way that depends on no particular choice of boundary defining function. Via the Levi--Civita connection, this concept applies to pseudo--Riemannian metrics on $M$. We study the relation between interior geometry and the possibilities for compactification, and then develop the tools that describe the induced geometry on the boundary. We prove that a pseudo--Riemannian metric on $M$ which is projectively compact of order two admits a certain asymptotic form. This form was known to be sufficient for projective compactness, so the result establishes that it provides an equivalent characterization. From a projectively compact connection on $M$, one obtains a projective structure on $\overline{M}$, which induces a conformal class of (possibly degenerate) bundle metrics on the tangent bundle to the hypersurface $\partial M$. Using the asymptotic form, we prove that in the case of metrics, which are projectively compact of order two, this boundary structure is always non--degenerate. We also prove that in this case the metric is necessarily asymptotically Einstein, in a natural sense. We determine the space of commuting symmetries of the Laplace operator on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of constant curvature, and derive its algebra structure. Our construction is based on the Riemannian tractor calculus, allowing to construct a prolongation of the differential system for symmetric Killing tensors. We show that any dimension $6$ nearly K\"ahler (or nearly para-K\"ahler) geometry arises as a projective manifold equipped with a $\textrm{G}_2^{(*)}$ holonomy reduction. In the converse direction we show that if a projective manifold is equipped with a parallel $7$-dimensional cross product on its standard tractor bundle then the manifold is: a Riemannian nearly K\"ahler manifold, if the cross product is definite, otherwise, if the cross product has the other algebraic type, the manifold is in general stratified with nearly K\"ahler and nearly para-K\"ahler parts separated by a hypersurface which canonically carries a Cartan $(2,3,5)$-distribution. This hypersurface is a projective infinity for the pseudo-Riemannian geometry elsewhere on the manifold, and we establish how the Cartan distribution can be understood explicitly, and also in terms of conformal geometry, as a limit of the ambient nearly (para\nobreakdash-)K\"ahler structures. Any real-analytic $(2,3,5)$-distribution is seen to arise as such a limit, because we can solve the geometric Dirichlet problem of building a collar structure equipped with the required holonomy-reduced projective structure. A model geometry for these structures is provided by the projectivization of the imaginary (split) octonions. Our approach is to use Cartan/tractor theory to provide a curved version of this geometry, this encodes a curved version of the algebra of imaginary (split) octonions as a flat structure over its projectivization. The goal of this paper is to solve the conjecture stated in a paper of Mezzetti, Mir\'o-Roig, Ottaviani and classify all smooth minimal monomial Togliatti systems of cubics. More precisely, we classify all minimal monomial artinian ideals generated by cubics, failing the weak Lefschetz property and whose apolar cubic system defines a smooth toric variety or, equivalently, we classify all minimal monomial artinian ideals generated by cubics whose apolar cubic system defines a smooth toric variety satisfying at least a Laplace equation of order 2.

An open convex set in real projective space is called divisible if there exists a discrete group of projective automorphisms which acts co-compactly. There are many examples of such sets and a theorem of Benoist implies that many of these examples are strictly convex, have $C^1$ boundary, and have word hyperbolic dividing group. In this paper we study a notion of convexity in complex projective space and show that the only divisible complex convex sets with $C^1$ boundary are the projective balls., Comment: 29 pages

We derive necessary conditions for a complex projective structure on a complex surface to arise via the Levi-Civita connection of a (pseudo-)K\"ahler metric. Furthermore we show that the (pseudo-)K\"ahler metrics defined on some domain in the projective plane which are compatible with the standard complex projective structure are in one-to-one correspondence with the hermitian forms on $\mathbb{C}^3$ whose rank is at least two. This is achieved by prolonging the relevant finite-type first order linear differential system to closed form. For complete affine manifolds we introduce a definition of compactification based on the projective differential geometry (i.e.\ geodesic path data) of the given connection. The definition of projective compactness involves a real parameter $\alpha$ called the order of projective compactness. For volume preserving connections, this order is captured by a notion of volume asymptotics that we define. These ideas apply to complete pseudo-Riemannian spaces, via the Levi-Civita connection, and thus provide a notion of compactification alternative to conformal compactification. For each order $\alpha$, we provide an asymptotic form of a metric which is sufficient for projective compactness of the given order, thus also providing many local examples. Distinguished classes of projectively compactified geometries of orders one and two are associated with Ricci-flat connections and non--Ricci--flat Einstein metrics, respectively. Conversely, these geometric conditions are shown to force the indicated order of projective compactness. These special compactifications are shown to correspond to normal solutions of classes of natural linear PDE (so-called first BGG equations), or equivalently holonomy reductions of projective Cartan/tractor connections. This enables the application of tools already available to reveal considerable information about the geometry of the boundary at infinity. Overcomplete representations and dictionary learning algorithms kept attracting a growing interest in the machine learning community. This paper addresses the emerging problem of comparing multivariate overcomplete representations. Despite a recurrent need to rely on a distance for learning or assessing multivariate overcomplete representations, no metrics in their underlying spaces have yet been proposed. Henceforth we propose to study overcomplete representations from the perspective of frame theory and matrix manifolds. We consider distances between multivariate dictionaries as distances between their spans which reveal to be elements of a Grassmannian manifold. We introduce Wasserstein-like set-metrics defined on Grassmannian spaces and study their properties both theoretically and numerically. Indeed a deep experimental study based on tailored synthetic datasetsand real EEG signals for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have been conducted. In particular, the introduced metrics have been embedded in clustering algorithm and applied to BCI Competition IV-2a for dataset quality assessment. Besides, a principled connection is made between three close but still disjoint research fields, namely, Grassmannian packing, dictionary learning and compressed sensing.

In this paper, we consider a special class of singular Finsler metrics: $m$-Kropina metrics which are defined by a Riemannian metric and a $1$-form. We show that an $m$-Kropina metric ($m\ne -1$) of scalar flag curvature must be locally Minkowskian in dimension $n\ge 3$. It shows that the main class induced is an $m$-Kropina metric plus a linear part on $\beta$. For this class, the local structure of Douglasian or (in part) projectively flat case is determined, and in particular we show that a Kropina metric is always Douglasian and a Douglas $m$-Kropina metric with $m\ne -1$ is locally Minkowskian. We have shown that the Beltrami Theorem in Riemannian geometry is still true for square metrics if the dimension $n\ge 3$, namely, an $n(\ge 3)$-dimensional square metric is locally projectively flat if and only if it is of scalar flag curvature. In this paper, we go on with the study of the Beltrami Theorem for a larger class of $(\alpha,\beta)$-metrics $F=\alpha\phi(\beta/\alpha)$ including square metrics, where $\phi(s)$ is determined by a family of known ODEs satisfied by projectively flat $(\alpha,\beta)$-metrics. For this class, we prove that the Beltrami Theorem holds if $\beta$ is closed, and in particular, we prove that $\beta$ must be closed for a subclass with $\phi(s)$ being a polynomial of degree two. In this paper, we classify a class of singular $(\alpha,\beta)$-metrics which are locally projectively flat with constant flag curvature in dimension $n= 2$ and $n \ge 3$ respectively. We show that an analogue of the Beltrami Theorem in Riemannian geometry is still true for square metrics in dimension $n\ge 3$, namely, an $n(\ge 3)$-dimensional square metric is locally projectively flat if and only if it is of scalar flag curvature. In this paper, we study a class of two-dimensional Finsler metrics defined by a Riemannian metric $\alpha$ and a 1-form $\beta$. We characterize those metrics which are Douglasian or locally projectively flat by some equations. In particular, it shows that the known fact that $\beta$ is always closed for those metrics in higher dimensions is no longer true in two dimensional case. Further, we determine the local structures of two-dimensional $(\alpha,\beta)$-metrics which are Douglassian, and some families of examples are given for projectively flat classes with $\beta$ being not closed., Comment: 18 pages

For a surface in the 3-dimensional real projective space, we define a Gauss map, which is a quadric in $\mathbb R^{4}$ and called the first-order Gauss map. It will be shown that the surface is a Demoulin surface if and only if the first-order Gauss map is conformal, and the surface is a projective minimal coincidence surface or a Demoulin surface if and only if the first-order Gauss map is harmonic. This article examines the coincidence of the projective and conformal Weyl tensors associated to a given connection D. The connection may be a general Weyl connection associated to a conformal class of metrics [g]. Here we treat the problem: given a torsion-free connection do its geodesics, as unparametrised curves, coincide with the geodesics of an Einstein metric? We find projective invariants such that the vanishing of these is necessary for the existence of such a metric, and in generic settings the vanishing of these is also sufficient. We also obtain results for the problem of metrisability (without the Einstein condition): We show that the odd Chern type invariants of an affine connection are projective invariants that obstruct the existence of a projectively related Levi-Civita connection. We construct a family of canonical connections and surrounding basic theory for almost complex manifolds that are equipped with an affine connection. This framework provides a uniform approach to treating a range of geometries. In particular we are able to construct an invariant and efficient calculus for conformal almost Hermitian geometries, and also for almost complex structures that are equipped with a projective structure. In the latter case we find a projectively invariant tensor the vanishing of which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an almost complex connection compatible with the path structure. In both the conformal and projective setting we give torsion characterisations of the canonical connections and introduce certain interesting higher order invariants., Comment: 37 pages

A Coxeter $n$-orbifold is an $n$-dimensional orbifold based on a polytope with silvered boundary facets. Each pair of adjacent facets meet on a ridge of some order $m$, whose neighborhood is locally modeled on ${\mathbb R}^n$ modulo the dihedral group of order $2m$ generated by two reflections. For $n \geq 3$, we study the deformation space of real projective structures on a compact Coxeter $n$-orbifold $Q$ admitting a hyperbolic structure. Let $e_+(Q)$ be the number of ridges of order $\geq 3$. The approximability of a convex body is a number which measures the difficulty to approximate that body by polytopes. We prove that twice the approximability is equal to the volume entropy for a Hilbert geometry in dimension two end three and that in higher dimension it is a lower bound of the entropy. As a corollary we solve the entropy upper bound conjecture in dimension three and give a new proof in dimension two from the one found in Berck-Bernig-Vernicos (arXiv:0810.1123v2, published)., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures. We prove that the metric balls of a Hilbert geometry admit a volume growth at least polynomial of degree their dimension. We also characterise the convex polytopes as those having exactly polynomial volume growth of degree their dimension.
