In the present paper we deal with non-constant curvature Thurston geometries \cite{M97}, \cite{S}, \cite{Sz22-3},\cite{W06}. We define and determine the generalized trans\-lation-like Apollonius surfaces and thus also bisector surfaces as a special case. Moreover, we give a possible definition of the "surface of a translation-like triangle" in each investigated geometry. The paper surveys open problems and questions related to interplay between the theory of integrable systems with infinitely and finitely many degrees of freedom and Nijenhuis geometry. This text has grown out from preparatory materials for the series of research symposia and workshops on Nijenhuis geometry and integrable systems held at SMRI (Sydney) and MATRIX (Creswick) in February 2022 and at La Trobe University (Melbourne) and MATRIX in February 2024, and from the open problem sessions at these events. It includes both relatively simple questions to get familiar with the topic, as well as challenging problems that are of great importance for the field., Comment: 35 pages

The main object of the paper is a recently discovered family of multicomponent integrable systems of partial differential equations, whose particular cases include many well-known equations such as the Korteweg--de Vries, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa--Holm, multicomponent Camassa--Holm, Dullin--Gottwald--Holm, and Kaup--Boussinesq equations. We suggest a methodology for constructing a series of solutions for all systems in the family. The crux of the approach lies in reducing this system to a dispersionless integrable system which is a special case of linearly degenerate quasilinear systems actively explored since the 1990s and recently studied in the framework of Nijenhuis geometry. These infinite-dimensional integrable systems are closely connected to certain explicit finite-dimensional integrable systems. We provide a link between solutions of our multicomponent PDE systems and solutions of this finite-dimensional system, and use it to construct animations of multi-component analogous of soliton and cnoidal solutions., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures

We show the asymptotics of the Bergman kernel function near the smooth divisor at infinity of the Cheng-Yau metric on quasi-projective manifolds. In particular, we show that there is a quantum phenomenon for the points very close to the divisor at infinity., Comment: 25 pages

We address the problem of how to characterise when a rank-two conformal Killing tensor is the trace-free part of a Killing tensor for a metric in the conformal class. We call such a metric a Killing scale. Our approach is via differential prolongation using conformally invariant tractor calculus. First, we show that there is a useful partial prolongation of the conformal Killing equation to a simplified equation for sections of some tractor bundle. We then use this partial prolongation to provide such an invariant characterisation in terms of the scale tractor and this partial prolongation. This captures invariantly the relevant Bertrand--Darboux equation. We show that Einstein Killing scales have a special place in the theory. On conformally flat manifolds, we give the full prolongation of the conformally Killing equation to a conformally invariant connection on a tractor bundle. Using this, we provide a characterisation of (non-scalar flat) Einstein Killing scales by an algebraic equation for the scale tractors corresponding to such metrics. This also provides an algebraic description of the linear subspace of conformal Killing tensors that are compatible with a given Einstein Killing scale. For completeness and to introduce the main ideas, we also study analogous questions for conformal Killing vectors., Comment: 35 pages

For a symplectic vector space $V$, a projective subvariety $Z \subset {\bf P} V$ is a Legendrian variety if its affine cone $\widehat{Z} \subset V$ is Lagrangian. In addition to the classical examples of subadjoint varieties associated to simple Lie algebras, many examples of nonsingular Legendrian varieties have been discovered which have positive-dimensional automorphism groups. We give a characterization of subadjoint varieties among such Legendrian varieties in terms of the isotropy representation. Our proof uses some special features of the projective third fundamental forms of Legendrian varieties and their relation to the lines on the Legendrian varieties., Comment: to appear in Ann. Inst. After having investigated the geodesic triangles and their angle sums in Nil and $Sl\times\mathbb{R}$ geometries we consider the analogous problem in Sol space that is one of the eight 3-dimensional Thurston geometries. We analyse the interior angle sums of geodesic triangles and we prove that it can be larger than, less than or equal to $\pi$. Moreover, we determine the equations of Sol isoptic surfaces of translation-like segments and as a special case of this we examine the Sol translation-like Thales sphere, which we call Thaloid. We also discuss the behavior of this surface. In our work we will use the projective model of Sol described by E. Moln\'ar in \cite{M97}.

The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Gu\'eritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds., Comment: 54 pages

Second-order (maximally) conformally superintegrable systems play an important role as models of mechanical systems, including systems such as the Kepler-Coulomb system and the isotropic harmonic oscillator. The present paper is dedicated to understanding non- and semi-degenerate systems. We obtain "projective flatness" results for two torsion-free connections naturally associated to such systems. This viewpoint sheds some light onto the interrelationship of properly and conformally (second-order maximally) superintegrable systems from a geometrical perspective. It is shown that the semi-degenerate secondary structure tensor can be viewed as the Ricci curvature of a natural torsion-free connection defined by the primary structure tensor (and similarly in the non-degenerate case). It is also shown that properly semi-degenerate systems are characterised, similar to the non-degenerate case, by the vanishing of the secondary structure tensor., Comment: 11 pages

The exceptional compact hermitian symmetric space EIII is the quotient $E_6/Spin(10)\times_{\mathbb{Z}_4}U(1)$. We introduce the Pl\"ucker coordinates which give an embedding of EIII into $\mathbb{C}P^{26}$ as a projective subvariety. The subvariety is cut out by 27 Pl\"ucker relations. We show that, using Clifford algebra, one can solve this over-determined system of relations, giving local coordinate charts to the space. Our motivation is to understand EIII as the complex projective octonion plane $(\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{O})P^2$, whose construction is somewhat scattered across the literature. We will see that the EIII has an atlas whose transition functions have clear octonion interpretations, apart from those covering a sub-variety $X_{\infty}$ of dimension 10. This subvariety is itself a hermitian symmetric space known as DIII, with no apparent octonion interpretation. We give detailed analysis of the geometry in the neighbourhood of $X_{\infty}$. We further decompose $X={\rm EIII}$ into $F_4$-orbits: $X=Y_0\cup Y_{\infty}$, where $Y_0\sim(\mathbb{O}P^2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ is an open $F_4$-orbit and is the complexification of $\mathbb{O}P^2$, whereas $Y_{\infty}$ has co-dimension 1, thus EIII could be more appropriately denoted as $\overline{(\mathbb{O}P^2)_{\mathbb{C}}}$. We describe all metrics geodesically compatible with a gl-regular Nijenhuis operator $L$. The set of such metrics is large enough so that a generic local curve $\gamma$ is a geodesic for a suitable metric $g$ from this set. Next, we show that a certain evolutionary PDE system of hydrodynamic type constructed from $L$ preserves the property of $\gamma$ to be a $g$-geodesic. This implies that every metric $g$ geodesically compatible with $L$ gives us a finite dimensional reduction of this PDE system. We show that its restriction onto the set of $g$-geodesics is naturally equivalent to the Poisson action of $\mathbb{R}^n$ on the cotangent bundle generated by the integrals coming from geodesic compatibility.

We study Patterson-Sullivan measures for a class of discrete subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups, called transverse groups, whose limit set is well-defined and transverse in a partial flag variety. This class of groups includes both Anosov and relatively Anosov groups, as well as all discrete subgroups of rank one Lie groups. We prove an analogue of the Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan dichotomy and then use this dichotomy to prove a variant of Burger's Manhattan curve theorem. We also use the Patterson-Sullivan measures to obtain conditions for when a subgroup has critical exponent strictly less than the original transverse group. The paper contains two lines of results: the first one is a study of symmetries and conservation laws of gl-regular Nijenhuis operators. We prove the splitting Theorem for symmetries and conservation laws of Nijenhuis operators, show that the space of symmetries of a gl-regular Nijenhuis operator forms a commutative algebra with respect to (pointwise) matrix multiplication. Moreover, all the elements of this algebra are strong symmetries of each other. We establish a natural relationship between symmetries and conservation laws of a gl-regular Nijenhuis operator and systems of the first and second companion coordinates. Moreover, we show that the space of conservation laws is naturally related to the space of symmetries in the sense that any conservation laws can be obtained from a single conservation law by multiplication with an appropriate symmetry. In particular, we provide an explicit description of all symmetries and conservation laws for gl-regular operators at algebraically generic points. The second line of results contains an application of the theoretical part to a certain system of partial differential equations of hydrodynamic type, which was previously studied by different authors, but mainly in the diagonalisable case. We show that this system is integrable in quadratures, i.e., its solutions can be found for almost all initial curves by integrating closed 1-forms and solving some systems of functional equations. The system is not diagonalisable in general, and construction and integration of such systems is an actively studied and explicitly stated problem in the literature.

A pair of planar polygons is "dancing" if one is inscribed in the other and they satisfy a certain cross-ratio relation at each vertex of the circumscribing polygon. Non-degenerate dancing pairs of closed $n$-gons exist for all $n\geq 6$. Dancing pairs correspond to trajectories of a non-holonomic mechanical system, consisting of a ball rolling, without slipping and twisting, along a polygon drawn on the surface of a ball 3 times larger than the rolling ball. The correspondence stems from reformulating both systems as piecewise rigid curves of a certain remarkable rank 2 non-integrable distribution defined on a 5-dimensional quadric in $\mathbb{RP}^6$, introduced by \'E. In this work, we examine the isoptic surface of line segments in the $S^2\times R$ and $H^2\times R$ geometries, which are from the 8 Thurston geometries. Based on the procedure first described in [10], we are able to give the isoptic surface of any segment implicitly. We rely heavily on the calculations published in [41, 42]. As a special case, we examine the Thales sphere in both geometries, which are called Thaloid. In our work we will use the projective model of $S^2\times R$ and $H^2\times R$ described by E. Moln\'ar in [20].

Given a 3-dimensional (para-)CR structure, its family of chains define a 3-dimensional path geometry. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions that determine whether a path geometry in dimension three arises from chains of a CR or para-CR 3-manifold. After having investigated the geodesic and translation triangles and their angle sums in $\SOL$ and $\SLR$ geometries we consider the analogous problem in $\NIL$ space that is one of the eight 3-dimensional Thurston geometries. We analyze the interior angle sums of translation triangles in $\NIL$ geometry and we provide a new approach to prove that it can be larger than or equal to $\pi$. Moreover, for the first time in non-constant curvature Thurston geometries we have developed a procedure for determining the equations of $\NIL$ isoptic surfaces of translation-like segments and as a special case of this we examine the $\NIL$ translation-like Thales sphere, which we call {\it Thaloid}. For semi-Riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature, the Calabi operator is a second order linear differential operator that provides local integrability conditions for the range of the Killing operator. In this article, extending earlier results in the Riemannian setting, we identify the Lorentzian locally symmetric spaces on which the Calabi operator is sufficient to identify the range of the Killing operator. Specifically, this is always the case for indecomposable spaces and we identify precisely those products for which it fails. Our method is quite general in that we firstly develop criteria to be in the range of a connection, viewed as a linear differential operator. We present a Fefferman-type construction from Lagrangian contact to conformal structures and examine several related topics. In particular, we concentrate on describing the canonical curves and their correspondence. We show that chains and null-chains of an integrable Lagrangian contact structure are the projections of null-geodesics of the Fefferman space. Employing the Fermat principle, we realize chains as geodesics of Kropina (pseudo-Finsler) metrics. Using recent rigidity results, we show that ``sufficiently many'' chains determine the Lagrangian contact structure. We present a geometric construction and characterization of $2n$-dimensional split-signature conformal structures endowed with a twistor spinor with integrable kernel. The construction is regarded as a modification of the conformal Patterson--Walker metric construction for $n$-dimensional projective manifolds. The characterization is presented in terms of the twistor spinor and an integrability condition on the conformal Weyl curvature. We further derive complete description of Einstein metrics and infinitesimal conformal symmetries in terms of suitable projective data. Finally, we obtain an explicit geometrically constructed Fefferman--Graham ambient metric and show vanishing of $Q$-curvature., Comment: 35 pages

Let $M$ be a surface with a Riemannian metric and $UM$ the unit tangent bundle over $M$ with the canonical contact sub-Riemannian structure $D$ on $UM$. In this paper, the complete local classification of singularities, under the Legendre fibration $UM$ over $M$, is given for sub-Riemannian geodesics of $(UM, D)$. Legendre singularities of sub-Riemannian geodesics are classified completely also for another Legendre fibration from $UM$ to the space of Riemannian geodesics on $M$. We consider the projective linear group $\mathrm{PSL}(3,\mathbb{H})$. We have investigated the reversibility problem in this group and use the reversibility to offer an algebraic characterization of the dynamical types of $\mathrm{PSL}(3,\mathbb{H})$. We further decompose elements of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{H})$ as products of simple elements, where an element $g$ in $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{H})$ is called $\textit{simple}$ if it is conjugate to an element of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$. We have also revisited real projective transformations and following Goldman's ideas, have offered a complete classification for elements of $\mathrm{SL }(3,\mathbb{R})$., Comment: Final version, 20 pages

Let $M$ be a K\"ahler manifold with complex structure $J$ and K\"ahler metric $g$. A c-projective vector field is a vector field on $M$ whose flow sends $J$-planar curves to $J$-planar curves, where $J$-planar curves are analogs of what (unparametrised) geodesics are for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds (without complex structure). The c-projective symmetry algebras of K\"ahler surfaces with essential (i.e., non-affine) c-projective vector fields are computed.

A manifold $M$ possesses an $\mathbf{RP}^n$-structure if it has an atlas consisting of charts mapping to $\mathbf{S}^n$, where the transition maps lie in $\mathrm{SL}_\pm(n+1, \mathbf{R})$. In this context, we present a concise proof demonstrating that $\mathbf{RP}^n\#\mathbf{RP}^n$ and a few other manifolds do not possess an $\mathbf{RP}^n$-structure when $n\geq3$. Notably, our proof is shorter than those provided by Cooper-Goldman for $n=3$ and Coban for $n\geq 4$. To do this, we reprove the classification of closed $\mathbf{RP}^n$-manifolds with infinite cyclic holonomy groups by Benoist due to a small error. We will leverage the concept of octantizability of $\mathbf{RP}^n$-manifolds with nilpotent holonomy groups, as introduced by Benoist and Smillie, which serves as a powerful tool., Comment: 16 pages. We introduce a unified framework for counting representations of knot groups into $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$. For a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, Lin and others showed that a Casson-style count of $SU(2)$ representations with fixed meridional holonomy recovers the signature function of $K$. For knots whose complement contains no closed essential surface, we show there is an analogous count for $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations. We then prove the $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ count is determined by the $SU(2)$ count and a single integer $h(K)$, allowing us to show the existence of various $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations using only elementary topological hypotheses. Combined with the translation extension locus of Culler-Dunfield, we use this to prove left-orderability of many 3-manifold groups obtained by cyclic branched covers and Dehn fillings on broad classes of knots. We give further applications to the existence of real parabolic representations, including a generalization of the Riley Conjecture (proved by Gordon) to alternating knots. These invariants exhibit some intriguing patterns that deserve explanation, and we include many open questions. The close connection between $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ comes from viewing their representations as the real points of the appropriate $SL(2, \mathbb{C})$ character variety. While such real loci are typically highly singular at the reducible characters that are common to both $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$, in the relevant situations, we show how to resolve these real algebraic sets into smooth manifolds. We construct these resolutions using the geometric transition $S^2 \to \mathbb{E}^2 \to \mathbb{H}^2$, studied from the perspective of projective geometry, and they allow us to pass between Casson-Lin counts of $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations unimpeded., Comment: 148 pages, 24 figures; v2: incorporates referee's comments; to appear in "Geometry and Topology"

We construct a new series of multicomponent integrable PDE systems that contain as particular example (with appropriately chosen parameters) many famous integrable systems including KdV, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa-Holm, multicomponent Camassa-Holm, Kaup-Boussinesq systems. The series contains also integrable systems with no low-component analogues.

We show that $3$-Sasaki structures admit a natural description in terms of projective differential geometry. This description provides a concrete link between $3$-Sasaki structures and several other geometries and constructions via a single unifying picture. First we establish that a $3$-Sasaki structure may be understood as a projective structure equipped with a certain holonomy reduction to the (possibly indefinite) unitary quaternionic group $\textrm{Sp}(p,q)$, namely a parallel hyperk\"ahler structure on the projective tractor bundle satisfying a particular genericity condition. For the converse, where one begins with a general parallel hyperk\"ahler structure on the projective tractor bundle, the genericity condition is not automatic. Indeed we prove that generically such a reduction decomposes the underlying manifold into a disjoint union of strata including open manifolds with (indefinite) $3$-Sasaki structures and a closed separating hypersurface at infinity with respect to the $3$-Sasaki metrics. Moreover, it is shown that the latter hypersurface inherits a Biquard-Fefferman conformal structure, which thus (locally) fibres over a quaternionic contact structure, and which in turn compactifies the natural quaternionic K\"ahler quotients of the $3$-Sasaki structures on the open manifolds. As an application we describe the projective compactification of (suitably) complete, non-compact (indefinite) $3$-Sasaki manifolds and recover Biquard's notion of asymptotically hyperbolic quaternionic K\"ahler metrics., Comment: 26 pages

Of the Thurston geometries, those with constant curvature geometries (Euclidean $\EUC$, hyperbolic $\HYP$, spherical $\SPH$) have been extensively studied, but the other five geometries, $\HXR$, $\SXR$, $\NIL$, $\SLR$, $\SOL$ have been thoroughly studied only from a differential geometry and topological point of view. However, classical concepts highlighting the beauty and underlying structure of these -- such as geodesic curves and spheres, the lattices, the geodesic triangles and their surfaces, their interior sum of angles and similar statements to those known in constant curvature geometries can be formulated. These have not been the focus of attention. In this survey, we summarize our results on this topic and pose additional open questions., Comment: Survey, 65 pages, 22 figures

We study geometric structures arising from Hermitian forms on linear spaces over real algebras beyond the division ones. Our focus is on the dual numbers, the split-complex numbers, and the split-quaternions. The corresponding geometric structures are employed to describe the spaces of oriented geodesics in the hyperbolic plane, the Euclidean plane, and the round $2$-sphere. We also introduce a simple and natural geometric transition between these spaces. Finally, we present a projective model for the hyperbolic bidisc, that is, the Riemannian product of two hyperbolic discs., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Let $N$ be a complete affine manifold $A^n/\Gamma$ of dimension $n$ where $\Gamma$ is an affine transformation group and $K(\Gamma, 1)$ is realized as a finite CW-complex. $N$ has a partially hyperbolic holonomy group if the tangent bundle pulled over the unit tangent bundle over a sufficiently large compact part splits into expanding, neutral, and contracting subbundles along the geodesic flow. We show that if the holonomy group is partially hyperbolic of index $k$, $k < n/2$, then $\mathrm{cd}(\Gamma) \leq n-k$. Moreover, if a finitely-presented affine group $\Gamma$ acts on $A^n$ properly discontinuously and freely with the $k$-Anosov linear group for $k \leq n/2$, then $\mathrm{cd}(\Gamma) \leq n-k$. Also, there exists a compact collection of $n-k$-dimensional affine subspaces where $\Gamma$ acts on. We establish an entropy rigidity theorem for Hitchin representations of all geometrically finite Fuchsian groups which generalizes a theorem of Potrie and Sambarino for Hitchin representations of closed surface groups. In the process, we introduce the class of (1,1,2)-hypertransverse groups and show for such a group that the Hausdorff dimension of its conical limit set agrees with its (first) simple root entropy, providing a common generalization of results of Bishop and Jones, for Kleinian groups, and Pozzetti, Sambarino and Wienhard, for Anosov groups. We also introduce the theory of transverse representations of projectively visible groups as a tool for studying discrete subgroups of linear groups which are not necessarily Anosov or relatively Anosov., Comment: 57 pages, 5 figures, some small typos corrected

On an almost complex manifold, a quasi-K\"{a}hler metric, with canonical connection in the c-projective class of a given minimal complex connection, is equivalent to a non-degenerate solution of the c-projectively invariant metrizability equation. For this overdetermined equation, replacing this maximal rank condition on solutions with a nondegeneracy condition on the prolonged system yields a strictly wider class of solutions with non-vanishing (generalized) scalar curvature. We study the geometries induced by this class of solutions. For each solution, the strict point-wise signature partitions the underlying manifold into strata, in a manner that generalizes the model, a certain Lie group orbit decomposition of $\mathbb{CP}^m$. We describe the smooth nature and geometric structure of each strata component, generalizing the geometries of the embedded orbits in the model. This includes a quasi-K\"{a}hler metric on the open strata components that becomes singular at the strata boundary. The closed strata inherit almost CR-structures and can be viewed as a c-projective infinity for the given quasi-K\"{a}hler metric., Comment: 20 pages

We consider multicomponent local Poisson structures of the form $\mathcal P_3 + \mathcal P_1$, under the assumption that the third order term $\mathcal P_3$ is Darboux-Poisson and non-degenerate, and study the Poisson compatibility of two such structures. We give an algebraic interpretation of this problem in terms of Frobenius algebras and reduce it to classification of Frobenius pencils, i.e. of linear families of Frobenius algebras. Then, we completely describe and classify Frobenius pencils under minor genericity conditions. In particular we show that each such Frobenuis pencil is a subpencil of a certain maximal pencil. These maximal pencils are uniquely determined by some combinatorial object, a directed rooted in-forest with edges labeled by numbers $\lambda_\alpha$'s and vertices labeled by natural numbers whose sum is the dimension of the manifold. These pencils are naturally related to certain (polynomial, in the most nondegenerate case) pencils of Nijenhuis operators. We show that common Frobenius coordinate systems admit an elegant invariant description in terms of the Nijenhuis pencil., Comment: In Version v2, Theorem 4 and its proof are improved, and a mistake in Theorem 5 is corrected. On a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature, the Calabi operator is a second order linear differential operator that provides local integrability conditions for the range of the Killing operator. We generalise this operator to provide linear second order local integrability conditions on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces, whenever this is possible. Specifically, we show that this generalised operator always works in the irreducible case and we identify precisely those products for which it fails., Comment: 17 pages. Two geodesically (projectively) equivalent Finsler metrics determine a set of invariant volume forms on the projective sphere bundle. Their proportionality factors are geodesically invariant functions and hence they are first integrals. Being 0-homogeneous functions, the first integrals are common for the entire projective class. In Theorem 1.1 we provide a practical and easy way of computing these first integrals as the coefficients of a characteristic polynomial.

In this paper we deal with $\NIL$ geometry, which is one of the homogeneous Thurston 3-geometries. We define the "surface of a geodesic triangle" using generalized Apollonius surfaces. Moreover, we show that the "lines" on the surface of a geodesic triangle can be defined by the famous Menelaus' condition and prove that Ceva's theorem for geodesic triangles is true in $\NIL$ space. In 1882 Sophus Lie posed the problem of describing 2-dimensional metrics admitting a non-trivial projective vector field, which was solved in recent years. Let $\mathbb{Q}_3$ be the complex 3-quadric endowed with its standard complex conformal structure. We study the complex conformal geometry of isotropic curves in $\mathbb{Q}_3$. By an isotropic curve we mean a nonconstant holomorphic map from a Riemann surface into $\mathbb{Q}_3$, null with respect to the conformal structure of $\mathbb{Q}_3$.
