This laboratory manual consists of three major sections. The first section deals with Direct Current (DC) fundamentals, and is divided into 17 phases leading towards the design and analysis of a DC ammeter and a DC voltmeter. Each phase consists of facts and problems to be learned in the phase, preliminary discussion, laboratory operation procedure, preparation test, and concluding discussion. The second section is designed to familiarize the student with the oscilloscope. The third section deals with Resistive-Capacitive (RC) transients. The purpose of this section is to introduce some of the basic principles of RC networks and Resistance-Inductive (RI) networks. Directions for the use of students' laboratory kits are also included. This laboratory manual on microbiology begins with an introduction relating the study of microorganisms to health occupations education and stressing the importance of teaching critical thinking. The introduction is followed by general instructions for the use of the manual and an illustration of hand washing procedures. The 13 laboratory exercises are on the following topics: use of microscopes; characteristics of microorganisms; microorganisms in the environment; slide stains (simple, the Gram method, negative, and special); suspended droplets; test of movement in agar; characteristics of bacteria; culturing media; disinfectants; and tests of susceptibility to antibiotics. Project Marine Ecology Research (MER) is an ecological curriculum designed to involve secondary students in the study of the marine biome. The background material and learning activities concern the study of the San Francisco Bay Area. The guide is divided into two major parts. In the first part, a history of the Bay Area is given. It includes the nature of the region, major changes, and important aquatic species. The bay-delta-estuarine ecosystem is discussed in detail. Particular attention is given to the life histories of the king salmon and the striped bass. The relationship between organisms and water quality is also treated. This section ends with a discussion of the future of this area. Part two contains the laboratory investigations. These activities complement the earlier discussions and directly concern an analysis of the Bay Area. Topics include the study of a plankton population, the San Francisco watershed, and biological sampling of a mud flat. (MA)

This document provides a laboratory manual for use by secondary level students in performing consumer-oriented laboratory experiments. Each experiment includes an introductory question outlining the purpose of the investigation, a detailed discussion, detailed procedures, questions to be answered upon completing the experiment, and information for further investigations. Topics investigated include: suntan lotions, photography, crystals, anti-freeze, fireproofing clothes, household cleaners, vinegar, antacid tablets, detergents, paints, aspirin, food, milk, coffee, and butter. This publication contains eighteen experiments and eight classroom activities. The experiments are of varying difficulty and cover the important aspects of solar energy utilization. Each experiment is self-contained, with its own introduction and background information. Energy measurements are emphasized and techniques for collector efficiency determinations are considered. Among the topics discussed are: (1) altitude and azimuth of the sun; (2) radiation characteristics; (3) energy collection with converging lenses; (4) air and water solar collectors; and (5) energy storage in gravel beds and in salt hydrates. Both theoretical and practical engineering considerations are illustrated by the experiments. Many experiments are directly applicable to existing physics, general science, and environmental science curricula, while others are of sufficient difficulty and duration to challenge college and the most advanced secondary students. The eight classroom activities present worldwide energy data and solar energy data for individual student analysis. Compiled to introduce the dental assisting student to various techniques used in the dental office and to present theoretical information essential for the student's professional development, this laboratory guide consists of three units of instruction. The first unit is an introduction to dental assisting and contains five topics of study. The second unit covers nine anatomy and physiology topics, and the third unit consists of seventeen topics dealing with laboratory procedures. Each unit includes an introduction, objectives, equipment needed, and a written laboratory exercise which may be assigned for the student's own personal use, for classroom discussion, or as homework. Many of the units contain final criteria sheets for instructor evaluation. References listed at the end of the guide are suggested for use as reading assignments, reference materials, or supplementary material on topics of interest not covered within the guide. (BM)

This student fieldbook provides exercises for a three-week course in limnology. Exercises emphasize applications of knowledge in chemistry, physics, and biology to understand the natural operation of freshwater systems. Fourteen field exercises include: (1) testing for water quality; (2) determination of water temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, alkalinity, acidity pH, phosphates, nitrates; (3) sampling at shoreline, in open water, and bottom mud; and (4) examination of samples at those levels. Designed to promote the use of safe, controlled investigations in science classrooms in Texas, this publication describes procedures to help teachers ensure the safety of all students in class and on field trips. Safety in the elementary science classroom and in secondary school science courses is discussed. Included are first-aid procedures, charts for safe storage of chemicals, and laboratory safety checklists. (Author/CS)

A programmed instruction course was developed, consisting of fifteen experiments encompassing eleven separate pieces of equipment operational in a solar and energy conservation lab. The programmed instruction manual for the lab was evaluated and revised during a workshop. This evaluation indicated that both the lab and manual are valuable tools aiding in efforts to conserve fossil fuels. The manual, which is also provided, consists of nine sections and an appendix. The first two sections contain programmed experiments involving a solar cycle trainer and solar schematic trainer. Section 3 provides power solar trainer instructor and trainee manual materials. Section 4, which deals with a heat pipe, contains general characteristics of the heat pipe, a simplified theoretical analysis, an introduction to a heat pipe mini-lab, and suggested experiments for the mini-lab. Computer programs dealing with the cooling and heating modes of a solar-assisted heat pump and an air-to-air solar trainer are contained in sections 5-7. Section 8, which deals with heat pump technology, contains a review of the simulated system and two practice exercises. Section 9 presents a sample print-out covering a domestic solar hot water heater. An appendix discusses teaching the principles of solar energy in the undergraduate engineering laboratory. (MN)

The lessons in this teacher's guide are intended to supplement existing taped materials in the French Basic Course. Emphasis is placed on creative activities, realistic situations, and authentic speech variations. The materials can be used for self-study purposes as well as in a language lab under the guidance of an instructor. The seven units in this volume deal with sound discrimination and pronunciation of French vowel sounds. Each unit contains the following sections: (1) learning objectives, (2) presentation of the sounds in several steps, and (3) several self-evaluative quizzes.
