Address terms are an essential part of any human language. Even though they might appear of little relevance, they bear meaning and reflect one's attitudes and relation to the addressee. Therefore, since our attitudes differ from person to person, address terms as conveyers of such information also differ and depend on a number of factors. The aim of this study was to present some basic terms of address in the English language, define rules governing their choice, explain their functions and see whether there are differences between the use of address terms in the books Pride and Prejudice and My Policeman, bearing in mind that the two books originated in different time periods. In total, 535 examples were gathered. The results show that there are differences regarding the use of address terms in the two books. In My Policeman, the informal ones are more favoured in comparison to the formal ones preferred in Pride and Prejudice. Moreover, the changes in the society and human relations also reflected on the importance of some factors governing the choice of a particular term, such as social status, level of intimacy, age, gender etc. Termini oslovljavanja bitan su dio svakog jezika. Iako se mogu činiti od male važnosti, oni imaju značenje i odražavaju nečije stavove i odnos sa sugovornikom. Stoga, budući da se naši stavovi razlikuju od osobe do osobe, termini oslovljavanja kao prenositelji takvih informacija također se razlikuju i ovise o određenim čimbenicima. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je predstaviti neke osnovne termine oslovljavanja u engleskom jeziku, definirati pravila koja određuju njihov izbor, objasniti njihove funkcije te vidjeti postoje li razlike između uporabe termina oslovljavanja u knjigama Ponos i Predrasude i Moj Policajac, imajući na umu da su knjige nastale u različitim razdobljima. Sveukupno je prikupljeno 535 primjera. Rezultati pokazuju da postoje razlike u uporabi termina oslovljavanja u dvjema knjigama. U knjizi Moj Policajac veća je frekvencija neformalnih termina u odnosu na formalne, koji su učestaliji u knjizi Ponos i Predrasude. Štoviše, promjene u društvu i međuljudskim odnosima odrazile su se i na važnost nekih čimbenika koji utječu na izbor određenog termina, kao što su društveni status, razina intimnosti, dob, rod itd.

Humor Literature and Teaching Foreign Languages and Translation: A Study in Teaching English Language and Translation In the present article, we would like to introduce the role of humor literature in teaching the English language and translation from two sides, one is based on the didactics of English language features and its bases, and the second one aims at clarifying the role of punctuation in translation didactics. This is because we believe that this method is not related with the art of education as much as it is related with the psychological aspect of the learner to encourage him to acquire the knowledge easily with pleasure and a funny way of communication. In this context, we are trying to shed light on the following aspects: To define the humor literature and its forms, and to clarify the importance of this type of literature and arts that we find an important factor to motivate the learner through the exploitation of jokes which is a distinct and a familiar didactic method in which the learner can easily and freely absorb it. In addition, this helps him to actively participate and express his opinions and mental abilities and to develop his cultural knowledge. Besides, it reduces the pressure and the tension in the didactics process on an ongoing basis so that the learner remains comfortable.

The article deals with the communicative approach to teaching English at technical universities. The constituents of the communicative competence are presented. Differentiation between two ways (strong and weak versions) of development of students’ communicative abilities can also be found in the proposed paper. The distinction lies in variance of ways of the English language acquisition by students, including those of technical specialities. The work contains lists of peculiarities of explicit/implicit learning and teaching with the help of communicative language teaching (CLT). Their positive sides and weaknesses are considered. Three central areas of explicit-implicit teaching – focus on form and form-focused instruction, fluency and automation, formulaic language – are also reviewed. The main attention of the article is paid to the aim, key characteristics and principles of the approach in question, as well as to advantages and disadvantages of the communicative approach use at the English language lessons. Among quality assessment criteria of the communicative teaching are efficiency of the English language acquisition, novelty of materials, and also effectiveness of educators’ and students’ work. Recommendations for teachers, concerning the proper CLT implementation at the lessons of English for Specific Purposes, and features of recommended classroom activities to do so are provided at the end of the article.

Educationists are not lacking behind in incorporating the technology in teaching English. This article examines the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB), which is being adopted in schools and institutions. Тем не менее Future in the Past является частью глагольной системы времен современного английского языка и выражает предположение, намерение или обязательство совершения будущего действия с позиции прошедшего., The article raises the question of ambiguity of Future in the Past in expressing the future tense in the modern English language. The author of the article analyzes should/would + infinitive, its grammatical status and the expressed lexical meaning. The article notes that ambiguity of Future in the Past is mainly due to the homonymy of should/would + infinitive forms with the forms of the subjunctive mood. However, Future in the Past is a part of the verb system of tenses in the modern English language and it expresses assumption, intention or obligation to perform a future action from the past position.

- Abstract
The article covers the problem of project-based learning (PBL) in present-day foreign language classes. The main aim of this research is to identify how PBL method can be implemented in teaching a foreign language (for example, English as a second language) in a modern comprehensive school and to give recommendations on organizing a foreign language class with the help of PBL. The working hypothesis of the study says that PBL method can be a relevant and effective methodological technique allowing educators to improve the quality of school education and motivating young learners to work hard at L2 classes and study a foreign language better. For the effective analysis and estimation of project-based learning in teaching ESL a two-step experiment was conducted. Overall, the results of the study demonstrated the importance of introduction of project-based learning in foreign language classes as an essential component of the teacher’s work in the present-day education. They also proved that project-based learning should be a must in every educator’s pedagogical “piggy-bank” because PBL is an effective professional instrument which may overcome the latest demands and challenges of the third millennium society.

110. Indirect Nomination in flora naming’s system: cognitive aspect

Conceptual alterations in the development of general language theory of nomination are considered in the article. They have defined the status of science-oriented cognitive nomination and the status of naïve-cognitive nomination. The mechanisms of functioning of cognitive-frame theory on the flora naming materials are classified in the article. Nominative frames of flora nomination participate more actively under the indirect meaning of flora objects through exocentric compounds. The indirect nomination gives the possibility to represent nominatively those facts, which are impossible to represent by direct meaning. In this case the nominator uses the transponation mechanism. The theory of non-obvious knowledge explains cognitive-frame essence of namings among nature’s objects. Cognitive-frame flora nomination is interpreted in the terms of prototype’s semantic theory, the theory of rema holding as “figure and ground”, the relevance/nonrelevance theory and also the theory of logical-semantic introduction. Extrapolation of these theories in the sphere of floranimic macrofield has given grounds to explain its heterogeneous nature. Microfield of parametric namings of plants is motivated by informative-ethic and emotional factors. From the volume of motivation-nominative qualities the one, which is called “form” of the plant, is the most numerous and is represented by indirect exocentric nomination. Microfield of pragmatic namings of plants is motivated by discourse-logical factors, the volume of indirect nomination has greatly descreased, exocentric nomination is not present wholly. The same situation is with the microfield of locative-temporal flora namings qualities.

Code-switching and code-mixing are considered dynamic conversational phenomena in interpersonal interactions, that is an alteration between two or more languages, dialectal variants, language registers, and it is an effective communicative strategy which Persian-English bilinguals consider a genuine thing in their ordinary speech practice. The focus of the present study is on the structural analysis of reverse code-switching between Persian and English that are known to be referred to two typologically different languages. Participants of the present research, all late bilinguals, reported on frequent use of code-switching (CS) and code-mixing (CM) in everyday language practice. CS/CM is quite normal and frequent among Iranian bilinguals, especially in informal settings where bilingual speakers can freely switch between their languages. Furthermore, the results revealed that Iranian bilinguals switch from English to Persian and in verso mostly at the lexical and the phrasal levels (intrasentential switching mode), but less frequently at the clausal or the sentence level (intersentential switching mode). The research states that there are some restrictions on inserting English verbs into the Persian syntactic frame: the Persian language is thought to be the matrix language and the preverbal part comes from English as the embedded language, such incongruity between the morphosyntactic structure and the verbal system of the Persian and English languages impose some constraints on the occurrence of switching codes between the pair of the languages under study.

Finding an aspect of life in which we do not rely on technology is almost impossible in an era in which its benefits are used to the utmost. Rapid technological changes and quickly growing knowledge base demand from us to acquire informational skills efficiently, which indirectly lead to improvements and updates in the teaching process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the scope of modernization of the teaching process in our country. A research was conducted in order to determine the extent of use of YouTube (as an important digital medium) and the Internet in general at a high school level. An overview of the prevailing attitudes on this topic is given, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of YouTube in the context of language learning. Results of the research that was conducted among the high school students in Leposavić are given in the main part of the paper. Finally, suggestions for selection of suitable teaching/learning video-contents were given, as well as recommendations for potential additional research in the future.

The present research tries to provide a clear idea about factors affecting student's motivation in the teaching of English in ESP institutions and universities. This study took place at the Preparatory School of Sciences and Techniques, Tlemcen, Algeria. The aim of this research is to highlight the nature of 'demotivation' and identify the causes of this lack of interest to the English module. The data are collected from the students of the first-year under the form of questionnaires and classroom observation. Two steps are followed during this research; the first one is to gather information from a sample unit composed of twenty students and the second one is to analyse the results collected. The findings indicate that despite the importance of the English language, there are many students who remain demotivated to learn it mainly because of their low level and the syllabus which remain for them inappropriate. The article focuses on the on terminological derivation of modern English-language economic discourse terminology as one of the ways of English word-stock enriching, studies structure of multicomponent terminological phrases in the mentioned sphere. The main ways of the terminological derivation are the following: terminologization, terminological derivation, borrowing a term from another language, literal translation, abbreviation. The study distinguishes two-, three-, four-, five-, six- and seven-component terminological units. The results of the study indicate a high productivity of two-component terminological phrases. The problem of gaining the equivalency during translation of English economic terms is also dealt with. The differences of the terminological systems of source and target languages cause some problems during translation of economic terminological units. This causes the necessity for study of terminological systems and looking for strategies of translation of partially equivalent and non-equivalent lexis. Establishing the differences in the conceptual systems expressed by terms of a source language and a target one, that enables their usage in the particular sphere, is a major step towards interlingual harmonization of terminological systems (in this particular case, the English and Ukrainian economic terminological systems). Also in the article analyses and generalizes the basic theoretical approaches to description of conceptual and structural organization of terminology, interprets such concept as “term” and highlights its character, establishes the meaning of such concepts as “terminology”, “terminological system” and “terminological field” and their relationship.

В данном исследовании рассматриваются особенности организация работы с профессиональной лексикой в рамках дистанционной поддержки курса «Профессионально-ориентированный иностранный язык» для магистров Казанского национального исследовательского технологического университета. Использование дистанционной поддержки для тренировки лексических навыков основывается на возможности дополнительной отработки лексических навыков при помощи тренировочных заданий, видеоматериала и автоматизированного контроля. В качестве лексического материала отбирается профессиональная лексика в соответствии с направлением обучения студентов. Среди особенностей организации работы над лексикой английского языка с использованием дистанционной поддержки выделяется дифференцированный подход к обучению, построение курса по модульному принципу, поэтапное изучение лексического материала в рамках каждого модуля и оценка знаний студентов, усиление роли самостоятельной работы обучающихся и развитие самодисциплины как у студента, так и у преподавателя., Knowledge of professional vocabulary is a necessary component for the competence of a young scientist. This study discusses the peculiarities of the organization of work with professional vocabulary as part of the distance support of the courses «English for Special purpose» Masters of Kazan National Research Technological University. The use of distance support for training lexical skills is based on the possibility of additional working out of lexical skills with the help of training tasks, video material and automated control. Vocabulary is selected according to the major of student learning. The general concepts and classifications of motivation, including the game method are given. The analysis of games used in the lesson and those affecting the development of the lexical, grammatical and phonetic skills is carried out. On the basis of research carried out in the English lesson for primary school children, the indicators of their activity in the process of using the game method in the classroom are identified. Based on the research, conclusions are presented regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of using the game method in English lessons in elementary grades.

В статье освещаются проблемы, связанные с качеством вокальной речи: ее осмысленностью и выразительностью для передачи художественного образа произведения, закодированного в поэтическом тексте. Эти качества реализуются с помощью вокальной дикции. В статье рассматриваются технические компоненты вокальной дикции, такие как фонетика, орфоэпия и ударно-ритмическая структура, способствующие передаче образной стороны речи, относящиеся к любому языку, в том числе и английскому. Основным способом решения данных проблем является разбор вокалистом поэтического текста на основе знаний об английской вокальной фонетике, с которой необходимо работать при помощи международного фонетического алфавита и специализированных словарей, а также с учетом правил английской вокальной орфоэпии. Эти правила относятся к произношению в пении слов, содержащих редуцированную гласную в безударных слогах. Изучение особенностей интонационной структуры английских фраз и предложений в комплексе с вышеупомянутыми составляющими позволит певцу создать убедительную вокальную интерпретацию произведения., The article is devoted to the problems connected with the quality of vocal speech: its comprehension and expression for conveying the art image of a vocal piece coded in its lyrics. The qualities are realized with the help of vocal diction. The article also describes the technical components of vocal diction such as phonetics, orthoepy, stressed and rhythmical structure assisting the imaginative side of speech, referring to any language including English. The main way of solving the problems deals with the singer’s analysis of lyrics based on the knowledge of English vocal phonetics, that is necessary to work with using the International Phonetic Alphabet and specialized dictionaries. The problems can also be solved considering the rules of vocal orthoepy. The rules refer to the pronunciation of words containing schwa vowel in unstressed syllables while singing. Learning the peculiarities of English phrases and sentences intonation structure together with the components mentioned earlier lets a singer create a convincing vocal interpretation of a musical composition.

Besides specific profession-related skills, it is also necessary for an engineering specialist to have good cross-cultural communication skills in order to ensure successful business co-operation with international partners, which is of extreme importance in any field of professional activity of a particular engineering specialist due to the global tendencies in today's business. The enquiries among the graduates from the Faculty of Engineering prove it to be true, stating that the English language skills, as well as the ability to communicate well cross-culturally on an international level has helped them manage their own businesses and/or work for certain employers more effectively than they could have worked in case the mentioned skills were not present. Therefore, a task for the educators at the university arises to motivate the students for acquisition of the language and cross-cultural communication skills in the process of studies as well as in extra-curriculum activities, by means of paying attention to the major cultural peculiarities of nations which manifest themselves in completely different styles of management, way of developing engineering products and supervision of engineering processes in business, as well as general attitude towards achievement of business goals. У статті зіставлено фразеологізми, що містять найменування тварин в українській, турецькій і англійській мовах. Мета цього дослідження — продемонструвати дані зіставного аналізу фразеологізмів із зоонімічним компонентом «кінь» у вказаних мовах. Об’єктом вивчення виступають українські, турецькі та англійські фразеологічні одиниці на позначення емоційних рис людини. Усі ці одиниці містять зоонім «кінь». Матеріал дослідження: фразеологічні та тлумачні словники української, турецької та англійської мов. Предметом вивчення є особливості культуро-логічного аспекту функціонування таких фразеологічних одиниць у зазначених мовах та їх структурно-семантичні особливості. Результатом проведення зіставного аналізу турецьких, англійських та українських відповідників кількох груп фразеологічних одиниць стала їх класифікація за семантичними групами. Висновки. Дослідження фразеологізмів із зоонімом «кінь» дає змогу виокремити три семантичні групи, які характеризують позитивні і негативні риси людини. Особливості світосприйняття різних народів впливають на кількість фразеологізмів у семантичних типах та мовну організацію зоофразеологізмів., В статье рассматриваются фразеологизмы с наименованиями животных в украинском, турецком и английском языках, которые представляют большой слой лексики. Цель этого исследования — показать данные сравнительного анализа фразеологизмов с зоонимическим компонентом «конь» в украинском, турецком и английском языках. Объектом изучения выступают украинские, турецкие и английские фразеологические единицы, которые используют-ся для передачи эмоций человека и имеют в своём составе зооморфный компонент «конь». Материал исследования: фразеологические и толковые словари украинского, турецкого и английского языков. Предметом изучения являются особенности культурологического аспекта функционирования таких фразеологических единиц в указанных языкахи их структурно-семантические особенности. Результатом проведения сопоставительного анализа турецких, английских и украинских соответствий трёх групп фразеологических единиц стала их классификация по семантическим группам. Выводы. Исследование фразеологизмов с зоонимом «конь» позволяет выделить три семантические группы, характеризующие положительные и отрицательные черты человека. Особенности мировосприятия разных народов влияют на количество фразеологизмов в семантических группах и на языковую организацию зоофразеологизмов., This article is devoted to the study of the phraseological units with denominations of animals in Ukrainian, Turkish and English and they are abundant as a lexical group. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the data of comparative analysis of phraseology with the zoonym component of the horse in Ukrainian, Turkish and English. The objects of our study are Ukrainian, Turkish and English FU, which denote the emotional traits of human and contain a zoomorphic component «horse». Research material: phraseological and explanatory dictionaries of Ukrainian, Turkish and English languages. The subject of study is the implementation of the culturological aspect of these FUs with the zoonym component «horse» and the structural and semantic features of these units. The result of a comparative analysis of Turkish, English and Ukrainian equivalents of several groups of phraseological units was their classification by semantic groups. Conclusions. The analysis of the phraseological units allows to divide them into three semantic groups: phraseological units with positive features of a person, phraseological units with negative features of a person. The features of the worldview of different peoples affect the number of phraseology in semantic types and the linguistic structure of zoophraseologisms.

Постановка проблемы. В лексике отображаются все изменения, происходящие в обществе, и появление новых предметов, явлений, понятий неизбежно влечет за собой создание новых наименований или расширения значения уже существующих слов. Результаты исследования. Сегодня новые слова и значения появляются в английском языке в значительном количестве. В Merriam-Webster Dictionary в 2019 году было добавлено около 1000 реалий-неологизмов, что есть показатель неологического бума в языкознании. Мы пытаемся определить, в каких сферах выявляется наибольшая словообразовательная активность. Также в рамках лингвистической теории перевода предпринимается попытка определить приоритетные способы перевода таких реалий-неологизмов с английского на русский язык. Выводы. Возникновение реалий-неологизмов превалирует сегодня в таких сферах деятельности человека, как цифровые технологии, социальная сфера, экономика, политика, наука, массовая культура и т.д. Популярные поисковые запросы в интернете тоже становятся объектом исследования лингвистов, эти слова становятся речевыми трендами. Передача неологизмов - сложная задача, но реализуемая в нашем случае в рамках лингвистической теории перевода., Statement of the problem. The vocabulary reflects all the changes taking place in society, and the emergence of new objects, phenomena, concepts inevitably leads to the creation of new words or the meaning expansion of the existing words. Results. Today new words and meanings appear in English in a significant number. About 1000 realias-neologisms were added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2019, which is an indicator of a neological boom in linguistics. We are trying to determine in which areas the greatest word-formation activity is revealed. Also, within the framework of the linguistic theory of translation, an attempt to determine priority methods for translating such realias-neologisms from English into Russian is made. Conclusion. The emergence of realias-neologisms prevails today in such areas of human activity as digital technology, social sphere, economics, politics, science, mass culture, etc. Popular search queries on the Internet also become the object of study of linguists, these words become speech trends. The translation of neologisms is a difficult task, but may be fulfilled, in our case, within the framework of the linguistic theory of translation., №4(44) (2020)

Стаття зацікавить тих, хто вивчає якісні зміни словникового складу англійської мови та їхні причини., The article deals with the expansion and enrichment of the modern English vocabulary through external borrowings. The aim of this study is to single out language, scientific and life aspects, which often serve as sources of those phenomena. In this article, I explore how current socio - political events affect the amount and intensity of new foreign borrowings. This article examines the changes that occur with newly invented English words. The article gives a detailed analysis of verbalization of the antagonism between eastern and western civilisations that aggravated in the contemporary society and is embodied in international terrorism. This article also reports the results of a research how sources of modern borrowings in to the English language changed according to the growing of national diversity among non-native speakers of English. The main idea of the article is that modern English borrowings have changed their origination from European and classical languages to the ones of eastern Moslem countries which is implemented in assimilation of a lot of foreign words and making them parts of the English language lexico–semantical system. The article is of interest for scholars who study qualitative changes in the vocabulary of the English language and their causes.

Imigracija u Irskoj, uključujući imigraciju Hrvata u tu zemlju, u posljednje vrijeme u znatnom je porastu. Stoga Irska u posljednjih nekoliko godina nastoji pronaći načine na koje se imigrantima može osigurati odgovarajuća kulturna i jezična integracija u irsko društvo. Ovaj rad se bavi istraživanjem jezične uporabe i stavova hrvatskih imigranata u Irskoj. U istraživanju koje je provedeno od lipnja do kolovoza 2019. godine sudjelovala su 82 hrvatska imigranta u Irskoj. Za potrebe istraživanja korišten je upitnik koji se sastojao od četiriju dijelova i koji su ispitanici ispunjavali preko društvene mreže Facebook. Od ispitanika se tražilo da odgovore na pitanja vezana za vlastito iskustvo emigracije u Irsku, a većina jezičnih pitanja odnosila se na engleski, i to na pojedine aspekte učenja, razine poznavanja i uporabe engleskoga jezika u različitim kontekstima. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju, između ostaloga, da većina ispitanika ima pozitivan stav prema boravku u Irskoj te engleskome jeziku. Većina njih procijenila je svoju trenutačnu razinu znanja engleskoga jezika mnogo boljom od prosjeka. Iako znanje engleskoga jezika većinom nije procijenjeno ključnim za pronalazak posla u Irskoj, ipak ga je značajan broj ispitanika procijenio bitnim prilikom njihova zaposlenja., Immigration in Ireland, including the Croatian one, has risen significantly in recent times. That is why in the last several years Ireland has been trying to find ways of ensuring the adequate cultural and linguistic integration of immigrants into Irish society. This paper deals with the language use and attitudes among Croatian immigrants in Ireland. The research that was conducted in the period from June to August 2019 included 82 Croatian immigrants in Ireland. It included the application of a questionnaire that consisted of four parts and that was filled out by the participants through the Facebook social network. The participants were asked questions connected to their emigration to Ireland. Most of the language-related questions included a reference to the English language, with a focus on specific aspects related to the process of learning, knowledge and use of English in different contexts. The results of the research suggest, among other things, that most participants have a positive attitude towards residing in Ireland and towards the English language. Most of them evaluated their current knowledge of English as better than average. Although the knowledge of English was not predominantly evaluated as crucial for finding employment in Ireland, still a significant number of participants evaluated it as relevant for their employment.

Исследование терминоупотребления лексических единиц – наименований деятеля в переводных текстах официального (юридического) стиля позволило выявить связь лексического значения глагола с возможностями и особенностями аспектуальной модификации выражаемого им действия при терминообразовании наименования деятеля. Как получение нового знания выработано предложение относить к разряду «наименования лиц по занятию» лица, выделяющиеся по полупрофессиональному и / или непрофессиональному занятию. Результат отражен в предложении учитывать терминоупотребление, терминологизацию безэквивалентной лексики в переводных текстах как иллюстрации речевых актуализаций производных, а также в некотором вкладе в представления о деривационном статусе отглагольных производных – результате изменений первичного лексического значения мотивирующего слова, отраженном в семантике производного слова., The research on term usage of lexical units – agentive nominal in translated texts of the official (legal) style has allowed to identify the connection of the lexical meaning of verb with the possibilities and features of aspectual modification of the action expressed by it in the term formation of agentive nominal. There is also a proposal to include in the category of “agentive nominal by occupation” nominal distinguished by semi-professional and / or non-professional occupation. Technological development, information technology development, new ways of communicating and globalisation have influenced the society and knowledge greatly. One's knowledge needs to be upgraded and improved constantly since it enables the quality of work, personal development, as well as a better quality of life in society. Due to historical spread of the language and the economic power of the United States of America, English has gained the position of a global language and is used as a lingua franca in the world. Therefore, many invidiuals decide to learn English in adulthood. Their decision to enrol in language courses and final success depend on many factors, motivation certainly being one of the key factors. The main aim of the master’s thesis is to find out what motivates adults to take part in language courses as well as what the potential barriers are. The analysis of the survey has not shown any major differences in motivation between older and younger adults however, factor analysis shows that knowledge is the most important value upon which people decide to enrol in the English language classes. When analysing barriers, situational barriers have proven as the most pressing issue once again. Znanje je v današnji družbi izrednega pomena, zato izobraževanje predstavlja eno najboljših naložb posameznika. Tehnološki razvoj, razvoj informacijske tehnologije, novi načini komunikacije in globalizacija so v zadnjih dvajsetih letih močno vplivali na družbo. Posameznik mora svoje znanje neprestano nadgrajevati, saj le tako lahko kakovostno opravi svoje delo in poskrbi za osebni razvoj, posledično pa tudi za boljše življenje v družbi. Angleščina je eden najbolj razširjenih jezikov, ki se govori kot materni jezik, kot drugi in kot tuji jezik. Postopoma si je priborila položaj globalnega jezika. Razlogi za njeno vlogo v svetu so različni, ključna pa sta zgodovinsko širjenje jezika ter gospodarska moč Združenih držav Amerike. Tehnološki in gospodarski razvoj ter politično in družbeno dogajanje spodbujajo, da se angleščina uporablja kot lingua franca. Zato se odrasli posamezniki odločajo za učenje angleščine, njihov uspeh pa je odvisen od številnih dejavnikov, med katerimi je ključnega pomena motivacija. Namen naloge je ugotoviti, kaj motivira odrasle in s kakšnimi ovirami se srečujejo. Analiza raziskave ni pokazala večjih razlik v motivaciji med starejšimi in mlajšimi odraslimi, kljub temu pa faktorska analiza pokaže, da je znanje najpomembnejša vrednota, zaradi katere se ljudje odločijo za vpis v tečaj angleškega jezika. Pri analizi ovir so se kot najbolj pereč problem ponovno izkazale situacijske ovire.
