Abstract

The utilization of bio-mordants to make natural coloring process more eco-friendly is gaining worldwide fame, whereas the addition of microwave treatment has added value to the extraction of colorant under mild conditions. The Current study has been undertaken to isolate tannin from neem (Azadirachta indica) bark under the impact of microwave radiation for the dyeing of mordanted (chemical and bio) silk fabric. For this purpose, the extraction of colorant (tannin) has been carried out in various media and dyeing variables have been optimized. For making the process more sustainable and clean, extracts ofbio-mordants such as turmeric (Curcuma longa), henna (Lawsonia inermis), pomegranate (Punica granatum) and acacia (Acacia nilotica) have been employed at given conditions. It is found that microwave radiation for 2 min. to acidified methanolic extract of 2 pH obtained from 6 g powder has given good color strength in irradiated silk when it is used to dye at 75°C for 65 min. by employing 3 g/100 mL of Glauber's salt the as exhausting agent. It is concluded that microwave treatment has not only enhanced the extraction of tannin from neem bark but also improved the color characteristics under low conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recent industrial revolutions cause bauxite mining activities across the globe to become notably more active. However, ceasing bauxite mining activities left bauxite mining sites barren without any vegetation, causing environmental and health problems, such as dust and red muds. Existing remediation techniques such as physical separation, incineration and chemical precipitation may increase risks of additional contamination or be more costly; thus, there is a need for greener and more feasible method such as phytoremediation. Phytoremediation and revegetation may help to make the barren lands to become green again with lower costs. Researches on phytoremediation technique to solve environmental problems in Malaysia are still limited but show great potentials. Works and researches on phytoremediation for rehabilitating bauxite-mined sites has been successfully conducted across the world, showing promising futures for barren bauxite mining sites in Malaysia. Abstract

Natural products with therapeutic nature are nowadays warmly welcomed in textiles. Current study is concerned with isolation of tannin from neem bark (Azadirachta indica) and its application onto silk fabric. For improvement in shades, chemical & bio-mordants have been employed at optimal dyeing conditions. It is found that methanolic extract of pH 5 obtained 8 g dye powder after US Treatment for 30 min has given high color strength if used to dye irradiated silk for 65 min at 75 °C. Bio-mordanting using herbal plants has improved the color characteristics as compared to chemical mordants used. ISO standards for color fastness reveal that herbal based bio-mordants have improved the rating from good to excellent as compared to chemical mordants used. It is concluded that US treatment has not only isolate the colorant for neem bark under mild condition but also given excellent characteristic using bio mordants onto silk fabrics. Abstract

Environmental pollution spread due to frequent use of synthetic dyes has compelled the global community to move toward sustainable and eco‐friendly products. The present research has been conducted to investigate the coloring efficacy of Arjun bark (Terminalia arjuna) for silk fabric under the influence of ultrasonic radiation. Extracts have been prepared in different media and extracts and silk fabrics have been irradiated ultrasonically for 15–60 min at 60 °C. Good color strength is obtained, by dyeing irradiated silk for 65 min at 65 °C, when irradiated extract of pH 3 (RE, 30 mL) obtained from powder (6 g) is used in the presence of salt concentration of 3 g/100 mL. Pre‐chemical mordants such as 5% of Al (Aluminum sulphate) and 9% of Fe (iron sulphate) as well as post‐chemical mordants such as 5% Al (Aluminum sulphate) and 3% of Fe (iron sulphate) have improved the color characteristics. The bio‐mordants employed reveal that 9% of pomegranate and turmeric extracts as pre and post bio‐mordants have given excellent coloring characteristics.
