The realists and liberalists understand the world from different perspectives and tend to explain the whole world in a divergent way. Here comes the eternal question of the academic circle. Who can explain the world better, realists or liberalists? This question is significant because it helps us to comprehend how world politics function and the current political dilemmas better. We argue that realism can explain history better than liberalism. Constant competitions were always presented through the frequent conflicts between countries. It is an irreversible and most unpreventable nature of the world. Through studying the theories, we are able to examine the world more systematically and logically. The classifications of the subject rationale the complicated and distinct historical events. Moreover, following the steps and various ideas of former scholars allows us to develop our own understanding of the world and determine our perspective.

The effect of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), with different concentrations in simulated water, on the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and their adhesion behaviour on stainless-steel surfaces, with and without visible light treatment, were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of ZnO NPs and light treatment greatly influenced the antibacterial performance of the NPs. In the water solution without light treatment, the low concentration (no more than 1 mg/L) of ZnO NPs in the aqueous solution promoted the growth of SRB, and the amount of biofilm attached to the stainless-steel surface increased. As the concentration increased, ZnO NPs exhibited antibacterial effects. In water under visible light irradiation, ZnO NPs showed antibacterial performance at all the concentrations studied (0.5~50 mg/L), and the antibacterial efficiency increased with the increase in the concentration of NPs. The determination results of the reactive oxygen species showed that light treatment can stimulate ZnO NPs in water to generate ·OH and O2·−, which exhibited good antibacterial properties. The adhesion amount of SRB on the stainless-steel surface was inversely proportional to the antibacterial efficiency of ZnO NPs.

Meat and aquatic products are susceptible to spoilage during distribution, transportation, and storage, increasing the urgency of freshness evaluation. Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) typically with the diameter in the range of 1-100 nm exhibit fascinating physicochemical properties. ENMs-based sensing systems have received extensive attention for food freshness assessment due to the advantages of being fast, simple, and sensitive. This review focuses on summarizing the recent application of ENMs-based sensing systems for food freshness detection. First, chemical indicators related to the freshness of meat and aquatic products are described. Then, how to apply the ENMs including noble metal nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, and metal-organic frameworks for the construction of different sensing systems were described. Besides, the recent advance in ENMs-based colorimetric, fluorescent, electrochemical, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensing systems for assessing the freshness of meat and aquatic products were outlined. Finally, the challenges and future research perspectives for the application of ENMs-based sensing systems were discussed. The ENMs-based sensing systems have been demonstrated as effective tools for freshness evaluation. The sensing performance of ENMs employed in different sensing systems depends on their composition, size, shape, and stability of nanoparticles. For the real application of ENMs in food industries, the risks and regulatory issues associated with nanomaterials need to be further considered. With the continuous development of nanomaterials and sensing devices, the ENMs-based sensors are expected to be applied in-field for rapid detection of the freshness of meat and aquatic products in the future.

PLIP lipases can initiate jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis. However, little is known about the transcriptional regulation of this process. In this study, an ERF transcription factor (CsESE3) was found to be co-expressed with all necessary genes for JA biosynthesis and several key genes for wax biosynthesis in transcriptomes of ‘Newhall’ navel orange. CsESE3 shows partial sequence similarity to the well-known wax regulator SHINEs (SHNs), but lacks a complete MM protein domain. Ectopic overexpression of CsESE3 in tomato (OE) resulted in reduction of fruit surface brightness and dwarf phenotype compared to the wild type. The OE tomato lines also showed significant increases in the content of wax and JA and the expression of key genes related to their biosynthesis. Overexpression of CsESE3 in citrus callus and fruit enhanced the JA content and the expression of JA biosynthetic genes. Furthermore, CsESE3 could bind to and activate the promoters of two phospholipases from the PLIP gene family to initiate JA biosynthesis. Overall, this study indicated that CsESE3 could mediate JA biosynthesis by activating PLIP genes and positively modulate wax biosynthesis. The findings provide important insights into the coordinated control of two defense strategies of plants represented by wax and JA biosynthesis.

The superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) is a complex associative tract comprising three distinct subdivisions in the frontoparietal cortex, each of which has its own anatomical connectivity and functional roles. However, many studies on white matter development, hampered by limitations of data quality and tractography methods, treated the SLF as a single entity. The exact anatomical trajectory and developmental status of each sub-bundle of the human SLF in neonates remain poorly understood. Here, we compared the morphological and microstructural characteristics of each branch of the SLF at two ages using diffusion MRI data from 40 healthy neonates and 40 adults. A multi-shell multi-tissue constrained spherical deconvolution (MSMT-CSD) algorithm was used to ensure the successful separation of the three SLF branches (SLF I, SLF II and SLF III). Then, between-group differences in the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) metrics were investigated in all the SLF branches. Meanwhile, Mahalanobis distances based on all the diffusion metrics were computed to quantify the maturation of neonatal SLF branches, considering the adult brain as the reference. The SLF branches, excluding SLF II, had similar fibre morphology and connectivity between the neonatal and adult groups. The Mahalanobis distance values further supported the notion of heterogeneous maturation among SLF branches. The greatest Mahalanobis distance was observed in SLF II, possibly indicating that it was the least mature. Our findings provide a new anatomical basis for the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by abnormal neonatal SLF development.

The genus Houpoea belongs to the family Magnoliaceae, and the species in this genus have important medicinal values. However, the investigation of the correlation between the evolution of the genus and its phylogeny has been severely hampered by the unknown range of species within the genus and the paucity of research on its chloroplast genome. Thus, we selected three species of Houpoea: Houpoea officinalis var officinalis (OO), Houpoea officinalis var. biloba (OB), and Houpoea rostrata (R). With lengths of 160,153 bp (OO), 160,011 bp (OB), and 160,070 bp (R), respectively, the whole chloroplast genomes (CPGs) of these three Houpoea plants were acquired via Illumina sequencing technology, and the findings were annotated and evaluated. These three chloroplast genomes were revealed by the annotation findings to be typical tetrads. A total of 131, 132, and 120 different genes were annotated. The CPGs of the three species had 52, 47, and 56 repeat sequences, which were primarily found in the ycf2 gene. A useful tool for identifying species is the approximately 170 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) that have been found. The border area of the reverse repetition region (IR) was studied, and it was shown that across the three Houpoea plants, it is highly conservative, with only changes between H. rostrata and the other two plants observed. Numerous highly variable areas (rps3-rps19, rpl32-trnL, ycf1, ccsA, etc.) have the potential to serve as the barcode label for Houpoea, according to an examination of mVISTA and nucleotide diversity (Pi). Phylogenetic relation indicates that Houpoea is a monophyletic taxon, and its genus range and systematic position are consistent with the Magnoliaceae system of Sima Yongkang-Lu Shugang, including five species and varieties of H. officinalis var. officinalis, H. rostrata, H. officinalis var. biloba, Houpoea obovate, and Houpoeatripetala, which evolved and differentiated from the ancestors of Houpoea to the present Houpoea in the above order. This study provides valuable information on the genus Houpoea, enriches the CPG information on Houpoea genus, and provides genetic resources for the further classification of and phylogenetic research on Houpoea.

Objective The balance between treatment effectiveness and quality of life in elderly breast cancer patients is an important issue for clinicians to consider. The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of life of elderly breast cancer patients and to explore the most critical factors affecting the quality of life. Methods This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from June 2022 to November 2022. Frailty Screening Scale and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 were assessed among breast cancer patients aged ≥65 years. Network analysis was used to identify the core symptoms in the network. Results 481 patients who met inclusion criteria were included in the final analysis. Patients were divided into early (stage I-III) and advanced (stage IV) stage groups based on AJCC Version 8. Patients with advanced disease had a higher incidence of frailty than those with early disease (29.5% vs 11.4%, PConclusion There is a general decline in quality of life in older women with advanced breast cancer. Fatigue is the most prominent problem that affects the quality of life. Related interventions need to be considered when developing clinical care plans for these patients.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years, remote communication has become increasingly common, which has also spawned many online solutions. Compared with an in-person scenario, the feeling of immersion and participation is lacking in these solutions, and the effect is thus not ideal. In this study, we focus on two typical virtual reality (VR) application scenarios with immersive audio and video experience: VR conferencing and panoramic live broadcast. We begin by introducing the core principles of traditional video conferencing, followed by the existing research results of VR conferencing along with the similarities, differences, pros, and cons of each solution. Then, we outline our view about what elements a virtual conferencing room should have. After that, a simple implementation scheme for VR conferencing is provided. Regarding panoramic video, we introduce the steps to produce and transmit a panoramic live broadcast and analyze several current mainstream encoding optimization schemes. By comparing traditional video streams, the various development bottlenecks of panoramic live broadcast are identified and summarized. A simple implementation of a panoramic live broadcast is presented in this paper. To conclude, the main points are illustrated along with the possible future directions of the two systems. The simple implementation of two immersive systems provides a research and application reference for VR audio and video transmission, which can guide subsequent relevant research studies.

AimsImproving the health behaviour can help prevent stroke recurrence. The existing health education interventions require more human resource. There is a lack of constructing a low-cost, highly universal, and easy-to-use stroke secondary prevention platform based on the existing medical resources.Methods and resultsThis was a randomized controlled trial to test the effects of a digital learning platform on the health knowledge, beliefs, and behaviours of stroke patients from baseline to 6 months after discharge. The control group received routine health education while the intervention group received health belief education during hospitalization and used a digital learning platform for 6 months after discharge. The health knowledge was assessed by The Stroke Health Knowledge Questionnaire, health beliefs by The Short Form Health Belief Model Scale for Stroke Patients, and health behaviours by the Stroke Health Behavior Scale. A total of 90 patients were included: 45 each in the intervention group and the control group, of whom 38 and 37 completed the study, respectively. At 6 months after discharge, (1) the health knowledge score of the intervention group was insignificantly higher than that of the control group, (2) the health belief score of the intervention group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and (3) the intervention group had higher health behaviour scores especially in physical activity than that of the control group. Other health behaviour dimensions have time effect, but not significant.ConclusionsThe digital learning platform can improve health behaviours of stroke patients 6 months after discharge, especially in physical activity.RegistrationChiCTR1800019936

Preterm (PT) birth is a potential factor for abnormal brain development. Although various alterations of cortical structure and functional connectivity in preterm infants have been reported, the underlying microstructural foundation is still undetected thoroughly in PT infants relative to full-term (FT) neonates. To detect the very early cortical microstructural alteration noninvasively with advanced neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) on a whole-brain basis, we used multi-shell diffusion MRI of healthy newborns selected from the Developing Human Connectome Project. 73 PT infants and 69 FT neonates scanned at term-equivalent age were included in this study.
