Abstract

The article discusses the history and future of China Studies in the United States. It highlights the significant progress made in the field since the establishment of China-U.S. relations in the 1970s. Prior to this, access to China was extremely limited, and scholars relied on indirect sources such as interviews with refugees and newspaper clippings. However, with increasing access to China, researchers were able to expand their areas of study, including policymaking, the Chinese political economy, and state-society relations. The article also acknowledges the challenges faced by scholars in recent years, such as restricted access to archives and visa refusals. Despite these challenges, the future of China Studies is seen as bright, with advancements in open-source analysis, comparative studies, and the ability to study China from outside its borders. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of supporting China Studies in the United States to maintain a competitive advantage over China and promote better understanding between the two countries.
