In this paper, the nuclear magnetic resonance detection technology is introduced to quantitatively identify the range of damage on the rock samples under different blasting conditions. This was accomplished by examining the rock breaking and the damage caused by the dynamic effect of explosive stress wave and the quasi-static effect of detonation gas. Two experimental conditions were undertaken: 1) blocked blasthole under the combined action of explosive stress wave and detonation gas; 2) non-blocked blasthole under the single action of explosive stress wave-with rock porosity and transverse relaxation time, T2, spectrum among other parameters used as the criteria. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detection technology intuitively was also used. The results of nuclear magnetic resonance were compared and verified with ultrasonic test, rock strength measurement, and numerical simulation tests of fluid-solid coupling. Results show that the range of damage under the combined action of explosive stress wave and detonation gas is larger than that under the single action of explosive stress wave. The quasi-static action of the explosive gas plays an important role in the process of rock breaking.

To investigate the outcomes of macular buckling combined with vitrectomy and inverted internal limiting membrane flap technique for highly myopic full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) with macular retinoschisis.Twenty-six eyes of 26 consecutive patients were retrospectively included. Twelve eyes underwent macular buckling alone (buckling group). Fourteen eyes underwent macular buckling and vitrectomy with an inverted internal limiting membrane flap technique (combination group). Patients were followed for at least 9 months. Rates of FTMH closure and macular retinoschisis resolution, best-corrected visual acuity gained at the final visit were evaluated.The mean follow-up time was 13.00 ± 3.16 months. FTMH closed in six eyes (50%) of the buckling group and 13 eyes (92.86%) of the combination group ( P = 0.026) at the final visit. The macular retinoschisis resolution rate was close between two groups (100% vs. 92.86%; P = 1.000). Both groups achieved significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (10.42 ± 17.25 and 16.36 ± 10.39 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study letters; P = 0.014 and P0.001). The combination group achieved slightly more best-corrected visual acuity improvement, but the difference fell short of significance ( P =0.312).Combination of macular buckling and vitrectomy with the inverted internal limiting membrane flap technique could achieve a high FTMH closure rate and significant best-corrected visual acuity improvement in FTMH with macular retinoschisis.

- Abstract
We study the adoption of a new pesticide-free wheat production system in Switzerland. Largescale transitions to such production systems have implications for the entire agricultural and food sector. Using survey data from 1,073 Swiss wheat producers, we empirically test whether risk preferences and risk perceptions in four domains relate to farmers' decisions whether and when to adopt pesticide-free production. We observe heterogeneity in farmers' risk perceptions (e.g., early versus late adopter) and find that farmers' risk preferences--as well as their perceptions of production and institutional risk--are related to adoption behavior rather than to perceived market and investment risks. The ecosystem apparent quantum yield (α), maximum rate of gross CO2 assimilation (Pmax) and daytime ecosystem respiration rate (Rd), reflecting the physiological functioning of ecosystem, are vital photosynthetic parameters for the estimation of ecosystem carbon budget. Climatic drivers may affect photosynthetic parameters both directly and indirectly by altering the response of vegetation. However, the relative contribution and regulation pathway of environmental and physiological controls remain unclear, especially in semi-arid grasslands. We analyzed seasonal and interannual variations of photosynthetic parameters derived from eddy-covariance observation in a typical semi-arid grassland in Inner Mongolia, Northern China, over 12 years from 2006 to 2017. Regression analyses and a structural equation model (SEM) were adopted to separate the contributions of environmental and physiological effects. The photosynthetic parameters showed unimodal seasonal patterns and significantly interannual variations. Variations of air temperature (Ta) and soil water content (SWC) drove the seasonal patterns of photosynthetic parameters, while SWC predominated their interannual variations. Moreover, contrasting with the predominant roles of Ta on α and Rd, SWC explained more variance of Pmax than Ta. Results of SEM revealed that environmental factors impacted photosynthetic parameters both directly and indirectly through regulating physiological responses reflected by stomatal conductance at the canopy level. Moreover, leaf area index (LAI) directly affected α, Pmax and Rd and dominated the variation of Pmax. On the other hand, SWC influenced photosynthetic parameters indirectly through LAI and canopy surface conductance (gc). Our findings highlight the importance of physiological regulation on the photosynthetic parameters and carbon assimilation capacity, especially in water-limited grassland ecosystems.

A challenge in standard genetic studies is maintaining good power to detect associations, especially for low prevalent diseases and rare variants. The traditional methods are most powerful when evaluating the association between variants in balanced study designs. Without accounting for family correlation and unbalanced case-control ratio, these analyses could result in inflated type I error. One cost-effective solution to increase statistical power is exploitation of available family history (FH) that contains valuable information about disease heritability. Here, we develop methods to address the aforementioned type I error issues while providing optimal power to analyze aggregates of rare variants by incorporating additional information from FH. With enhanced power in these methods exploiting FH and accounting for relatedness and unbalanced designs, we successfully detect genes with suggestive associations with Alzheimer disease, dementia, and type 2 diabetes by using the exome chip data from the Framingham Heart Study.

Background: Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed drinks around the world. During the coffee roasting process, sugars and amines undergo a violent Maillard reaction, resulting in a large number of volatile and non-volatile components. These ingredients have a huge impact on the formation of coffee flavor. In addition, many Maillard products in coffee have also been proven to exert antioxidative, anti-inflammatory effects, etc. Objective: The objective of this research is to discover non-volatile Maillard reaction products in roasted coffee beans. Results and Methods: A pair of enantiomers pyrrolomorpholine spiroketal alkaloids 1a and 1b were isolated from roasted beans of Yunnan coffea Arabica. Their planar structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, HRESIMS spectra and X-Ray diffraction. Conclusion: Two pyrrolomorpholine spiroketal alkaloids were isolated from roasted Arabica coffee beans. And their formation pathway via Maillard reaction was deduced. Their influence on the formation of coffee bitterness and biological functions is worthy of being further studied.

To assess changes in myopic maculopathy based on the ATN classification system with optical coherence tomography angiography.This was a cross-sectional study. The macular choroidal thickness (MCT) and the choriocapillaris flow (CC) were measured with optical coherence tomography angiography. The relationship of MCT and CC with different chorioretinal atrophy (A), myopic foveoschisis (T), and myopic neovascularization (N) grades was investigated.One hundred and fifty-three participates (219 eyes) were included. MCT and CC had no significant correlation with different T grades (P0.05). Choriocapillaris flow had a significant decrease in eyes with lacquer cracks compared with those with no neovascular maculopathy (P0.05) and showed a significant increase in active choroidal neovascularization compared with those with lacquer cracks (P0.05). Macular choroidal thickness and CC had negative correlations with different A grades (P0.001). MCT showed the greatest decrease in the early stage of myopic atrophic maculopathy (P0.001), and CC showed the most significant reduction in the late stage (P0.001).Choroidal changes in the highly myopic patients were detected by optical coherence tomography angiography. Progressive ischemia in the macula may play an important role in the development of myopic atrophic maculopathy. Active choroidal neovascularization may have manifested as compensation for the decrease in MCT and CC. On the contrary, myopic traction maculopathy had little correlation with choroidal changes.

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. Purpose: The imaging diagnosis of fracture-related infection is often challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of
18 F-FDG PET/CT for the diagnosis of fracture-related infection (FRI) with internal fixation after orthopedic surgery in lower extremities. Methods: A total of 254 consecutive patients who underwent18 F-FDG PET/CT scans with suspected FRI with internal fixation in lower extremities were retrospectively investigated18 F-FDG PET/CT images were semiquantitatively evaluated with multiple metabolic parameters. Additionally, morphological information of the inguinal draining lymph nodes (DLN) with the highest SUV value was also collected and analyzed. Results: Patients were divided into two groups according to final diagnosis: the infected (N=197) and the non-infected group (N=57). The differences in the inguinal DLN-related parameters, including the long diameter, short diameter, maximum cross-sectional area, maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic volume (MV) 60%, MV70%, MV80%, total lesional glycolysis (TLG) 60%, TLG70%, TLG80%, and the infection suspected area related parameters, including SUVmax, MV25%, MV30%, MV35%, MV40%, MV50%, and TLG70%, between the two groups were statistically significant. We then compared the highest area under the curves (AUCs) among the morphological parameters of DLN, metabolic parameters of DLN, and metabolic parameters of the suspected infection area. The result demonstrated that SUVmax of the inguinal DLN showed the best diagnostic performance with an AUC of 0.939 (P<0.05). Conclusion: Semiquantitative analysis (especially SUVmax) of the inguinal DLN in18 F-FDG PET/CT images could be a promising method for the diagnosis of suspected FRI with internal fixation after orthopedic surgery in lower extremities. The treatment of bone defects is an important problem in clinical practice. The rapid development of bone tissue engineering (BTE) may provide a new method for bone defect treatment. Metal ions have been widely studied in BTE and demonstrated a significant effect in promoting bone tissue growth. Different metal ions can be used to treat bone defects according to specific conditions, including promoting osteogenic activity, inhibiting osteoclast activity, promoting vascular growth, and exerting certain antibacterial effects. Multiple studies have confirmed that metal ions-modified composite scaffolds can effectively promote bone defect healing. By studying current extensive research on metal ions in the treatment of bone defects, this paper reviews the mechanism of metal ions in promoting bone tissue growth, analyzes the loading mode of metal ions, and lists some specific applications of metal ions in different types of bone defects. Finally, this paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of metal ions and analyzes the future research trend of metal ions in BTE. This article can provide some new strategies and methods for future research and applications of metal ions in the treatment of bone defects.

We investigate the circumstances under which socially responsible investing (SRI) enhances firm long-term financial performance, and therefore provides incentives for firms to self-regulate their environmental performance. Aggregating portfolios across SRI mutual funds, we estimate the effect of SRI investment with environmental screening criteria on firm cost of equity capital. We find that accounting for interactions between firm and non-shareholder stakeholders, and potential agency costs associated with certain environmental activities of the firm, SRI can facilitate the alignment of firms’ environmental and financial goals. We also find that an industry group’s environmental performance and diversity influence the extent to which a firm in that group can benefit from SRI investment.

Purpose To compare the efficacy of macular buckling (MB) alone against a combined internal limiting membrane (ILM) inversion flap for full-thickness macular hole (FTMH)-associated macular detachment (MD) in patients with high myopia. Methods This was a prospective interventional case series of patients with high myopia surgically treated with MB alone or combined with an inverted ILM flap for FTMH- associated MD. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the 24-month postoperative follow-up, rate of initial retinal reattachment and macular hole closure were measured. Results A total of 62 eyes from 62 participants (33 in the MB group, 29 in the combination group) were studied. Postoperative BCVA improved significantly in both the combination group (P P = 0.027). The postoperative BCVA at 12 months (P = 0.021) and 24 months (P = 0.041) was significantly better in the combination group than in the MB group. The postoperative BCVA was not significantly different between the eyes with closed and unclosed MH at each follow-up time point (P > 0.05). In the combination group, we observed earlier retinal reattachment and closure of the MH as well as a higher rate of MH closure (82.8% vs. 66.7%) than in the MB group, although this difference was insignificant (P = 0.248). Conclusion MB combined with the ILM flap inversion technique achieved better postoperative BCVA and a higher success rate of MH closure than MB alone. We believe that combination surgery should be preferentially recommended.

The objective of this review is to evaluate the influence of six factors on coffee volatiles. At present, the poor aroma from robusta or low-quality arabica coffee can be significantly improved by advanced technology, and this subject will continue to be further studied. On the other hand, inoculating various starter cultures in green coffee beans has become a popular research direction for promoting coffee aroma and flavor. Several surveys have indicated that shade and altitude can affect the content of coffee aroma precursors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which remain to be fully elucidated. The emergence of the new roasting process has greatly enriched the aroma composition of coffee. Cold-brew coffee is one of the most popular trends in coffee extraction currently, and its influence on coffee aroma is worthy of in-depth and detailed study. Omics technology will be one of the most important means to analyze coffee aroma components and their quality formation mechanism. A better understanding of the effect of each parameter on VOCs would assist coffee researchers and producers in the optimal selection of post-harvest parameters that favor the continuous production of flavorful and top-class coffee beans and beverages. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Summary Treatments that target single mediators of sepsis have failed to reduce its high mortality rate. Here we developed multifunctional tannic acid-Zn2+-gentamicin nanoparticles (TA-Zn-Gen NPs) that target multiple mediators of sepsis to improve sepsis treatment. TA-Zn-Gen NPs with lower gentamicin content possessed net negative surface charge but still bound cell-free DNA (cfDNA) with high affinity. The TA-Zn-Gen NPs exhibited five modes of anti-sepsis activity: (1) scavenged cfDNA and inhibited cfDNA-initiated activation of toll-like receptors and NF-κB signaling; (2) inhibited activated macrophage-induced macrophage recruitment; (3) scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced ROS-induced DNA damage and cell death; (4) inhibited nitric oxide production induced by lipopolysaccharides; and (5) potent antibacterial activity. The NPs reduced multiple organ damage and increased the survival rate of mice with severe sepsis. Together, the results demonstrate the potency of targeting multiple mediators for sepsis treatment, and support the development of multifunctional NPs for treating other intractable inflammation-related diseases.

For oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions, a new polymer stabilizer of butyl acrylate (BA) grafted cellulose nanocrystals (BA-g-CNCS) has been developed. By adjusting the BA concentration, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces of BA-g-CNCs could be systematically modified based on the controllable interface activity. Specifically, the emulsification stability of the as-prepared stabilizer was examined as a function of BA content, BA-g-CNCS usage, and oil type. The results showed that the Pickering emulsion stabilized by BA-g-CNCS had a 98% volume fraction of emulsion with long-term stability. Importantly, BA-g-CNCS could be a promising choice for polymer stabilizers and could generate high internal phase Pickering emulsions without cross-linking when combined with 13% BA and 1.75% BA-g-CNCS. Furthermore, it was established that BA-g-CNCs possessed self-emulsifying quality, worked as hydrophobic coatings, and improved the mechanical properties. This was of fundamental interest to polymer stabilizer and functional coatings, allowing for promising applications in coating fields such as fabrics, leather, paper, controlled encapsulation, and the release of actives in material science.

Background The number of engineering PhDs pursuing postdoctoral research scholar (postdoc) positions has steadily increased in the last 30 years. Postdoc positions are commonly thought of as a step toward academic careers. However, engineering PhDs are more likely to work in industry, which leaves open the question of the role of postdocs in the career trajectories of engineering PhDs. Purpose/hypothesis This study examines the factors associated with attainment of postdocs. It also identifies the influence of postdocs on attainment of tenure-track faculty positions and early career salaries. Design/method Super's “life span, life space” theory informs the analytical approach. Descriptive and regression analyses, and propensity score matching, are conducted using a nationally representative sample of engineering PhDs from the 1993–2013 National Science Foundation Survey of Doctorate Recipients data set merged with the 1985–2013 Survey of Earned Doctorates. Results Engineering PhDs primarily funded by research assistantships and who graduated from a doctoral program with higher-ranked research activities and greater proportions of previous cohorts pursuing postdocs are more likely to attain postdoc positions. Among engineering PhDs, postdoctoral scholars are more likely than PhDs in nonacademic positions to attain tenure-track faculty positions. Early career average salaries are relatively similar between postdoctoral scholars and PhDs without postdoc experiences working in the academic sector. Conclusions Postdoctoral research positions can provide a viable pathway toward careers in the academic sector. Background Forearm crisscross injury is rare in children; there is no relevant literature so far. Surgeons lack experience and knowledge in treating this type of crisscross injury. We report a case of forearm crisscross injury in a child for the first time and analyze its mechanism. Case summary An 8-year-old boy experienced pain in his left forearm when he accidentally fell while skateboarding. Physical examination revealed swelling and deformity of the left forearm. We performed imaging and the results revealed left radial head dislocation, left distal radial epiphyseal separation from the shaft, and interruption of the continuity of the dorsal cortex of the left distal ulna. Anteroposterior and lateral X-ray films showed that the radius and ulna were crisscrossed. A diagnosis of superior radioulnar joint dislocation, left distal radial epiphyseal injury, and left distal ulnar fracture was made. After unsuccessful manual reduction, we adopted a minimally invasive procedure and succeeded. After a 14-wk period of follow-up, the patient had good left upper limb function, no complaints of pain or limited range of motion, and good follow-up results. Conclusion This is the first report of a child with a forearm crisscross injury in which the mechanism and the differences from adult crisscross injury are analyzed. Minimally invasive surgery with intramedullary fixation can achieve a good therapeutic effect. This case provides a reference for the treatment of similar patients in the future.

147. Preparing Industry Leaders: The Role of Doctoral Education and Early Career Management Training in the Leadership Trajectories of Women STEM PhDs

While gender diversity in leadership has been shown to benefit organizations and promote innovations, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in the industry sector. With increasing numbers of women pursuing PhDs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, it is critical to examine how PhD programs contribute to the career paths of PhDs. This study examines the role of doctoral education preparation in communication, management, and technical skills, as well as post-PhD early career management training (ECMT), on PhDs’ attainment of leadership positions in industry. Data come from the National Science Foundation Survey of Doctorate Recipients, National Science Foundation Survey of Earned Doctorates, and National Research Council Rankings of PhD programs. Using regression analyses, results indicate that ECMT is associated with a higher likelihood of attainment of leadership positions. PhD preparation in management skills also contributes to the attainment of leadership positions. Previous literature has shown that structural inequities and workplace bias contribute to limiting women’s progress to leadership positions and that it is critical to address systemic and workplace biases. Research findings suggest that PhD program preparation and increased access to professional development opportunities can help contribute to the enhancement of women’s pathways to leadership roles. Structural changes in doctoral education preparation in management skills and increases in ECMT opportunities offered by employers also have the potential to increase the participation of STEM PhDs in leadership roles in industry.

Objective: The easy liver fibrosis test (eLIFT) is a novel predictor of liver fibrosis in chronic liver disease (CLD). This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the eLIFT for liver inflammation and fibrosis in CLD patients. Methods: We enrolled 1125 patients with CLD who underwent liver biopsy. The predictive accuracy for liver inflammation and fibrosis of the eLIFT was assessed and compared to that of the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-to-platelet ratio (GPR) by ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: The areas under the ROC curves (AUROCs) of the eLIFT for assessing liver inflammation G ≥ 2 and G ≥ 3 were 0.77 (0.75-0.80) and 0.81 (0.79-0.84), with cut-offs of 8.0 and 11.0, respectively. The AUROCs of the eLIFT for predicting fibrosis stages S ≥ 2 and S4 were 0.72 (0.70-0.76) and 0.76 (0.72-0.80), with cut-offs of 9.0 and 10.0, respectively. In discriminating G≥2 inflammation, the AUROC of the eLIFT was better than that of the FIB-4, with no difference compared with the GPR, but lower than that of the APRI. When discriminating G≥3 inflammation, the AUROC of the eLIFT was comparable to that of the APRI and GPR but superior to that of the FIB-4. There were no significant differences between the four indexes for predicting S≥2 and S4. Conclusion: The eLIFT is a potentially useful noninvasive predictor of liver inflammation and fibrosis in patients with CLD.

Objective: To evaluate and comprehensively analyze the clinical efficacy of recombinant human endostatin combined with Iressa targeted therapy in patients with pleural metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma. Methods: The interval of the selected study period span was from January 2017 to April 2021. The sample source of the study was 42 patients with lung adenocarcinoma admitted to hospital. The random number table method was used for study grouping, and they were further divided into study groups (n = 21, 14 cases with pleural metastasis) and control group (n=21, 13 cases with pleural metastasis), all patients received systemic chemotherapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin. Patients with pleural metastases in the control group were injected with 60 mg cisplatin into the thoracic cavity. Patients in the study group were treated with Iressa (gefitinib) targeted therapy if genetic testing showed epidermal growth factor receptor (EGRF) mutations, and patients with pleural metastases were treated with pleural metastasis with Endo (recombinant human endostatin YH-16) to control pleural effusion. Two sets of related indicators were compared and analyzed. Results: Comparing the short-term disease control rate, treatment effectiveness and long-term survival rate between the two groups shows that the study group has more advantages (P0.05).
