Abstract

The article presents a discourse of safer sex as a community practice. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s many lesbians and gay men have been deeply involved in sustained and sometimes difficult debates concerning questions of sexual identity, representation and cultural politics. In retrospect it almost seems as if humans had been limbering up in advance to face the immensely complex and challenging problems raised by HIV disease, and the international "pro-family" politics of the past decade. There can be little doubt that these debates over theory have substantially improved the understanding of much of the political and cultural hysteria that surrounds the humans, and have helped them plan effective strategic interventions on behalf of people living with HIV disease, and their various communities. The article then refers to the research projects presented at the Fifth International Conference on AIDS in which, only three considered the role of health care providers from the perspective of clients.

Jeffrey Weeks, author of "Sexuality and Its Discontents," claims that gay identity is a product of nature and that there is no significant link between sexual practices and sexual identity. Abstract

This article examines the positioning of the projected adult-as-child in the discourses of children's literature based on the work "The Case of Peter Pan," by Jacqueline Rose. Rose's work argues that the relation between adult and child is impossible because it presupposes an absolute distinction between adulthood and childhood. Peter Pan is shown as a boy who is prevented from growing up. According to Rose, books for children must construct an imaginary space of pure identification between children and adults.

Abstract

This chapter reprints the article GLF: 25 Years on, which was first published in the June 1996 issue of Pink Paper. This article marks the 25th anniversary of the first British Gay Day rally in Hyde Park, London, England. Whilst earlier homosexual rights movements in Great Britain and Europe had campaigned and lobbied for equality in law, and tolerance, Gay Liberation looked beyond narrow parliamentarianism, recognizing that questions of sexuality affect every aspect of society, from women's wages to the school curriculum, as well as opportunities for personal happiness and fulfillment. The Gay Liberation Front (GLF) movement provided the initiative behind a wide range of institutions founded by and for lesbians and gay men in the seventies, such as the national Switchboard movement, and the emergence of the modern gay press, which in turn nourished our original responses to HIV and AIDS in the early eighties. GLF always insisted that the regulation and policing of homosexuality, in public or in private, was equally of political significance. This came from direct experience. The author is convinced that much of the deeper popular impetus behind GLF related far more to the dramatic contrast between British and mainland European experience, than to the direct influence of the U.S.

Abstract

This chapter reprints the article Concorde, which was first published in the May 1994 issue of Gay Times. This article aims to tackle the controversy surrounding the antiviral agent AZT, its cost and its effects. Specifically, it focuses on the three-year Anglo-French clinical trial known as Concorde, which compared the effects of AZT as an early intervention drug for asymptomatic people with HIV, and as a potential treatment drug at later stages of HIV-related illness. The Concorde trial conclusively demonstrates that in relation to asymptomatic HIV infection, AZT may result in a modest increase in CD4 levels, but does not delay the onset of AIDS. The entire history of AZT has been bedevilled by conflicting claims concerning on the one hand its supposed beneficial efficacy, and on the other its supposed harmful consequences. Meanwhile, in the real, complex world of patient management, the vast majority of doctors, especially outside the US, were cautious about AZT, and skeptical about the way in which it was originally licensed. Thus the Concorde trial was designed to evaluate AZT in the long term, in such a way that there could be no confusion between the effects the drug might have on surrogate markers for HIV disease progression such as CD4 counts, and actual clinical benefits to individuals.

Abstract

This chapter reprints the article How to Have Sax in an Epidemic, which was first published in Artforum. This article describes how disco music has responded the AIDS/HIV epidemic far more pragmatically and directly than any other cultural medium. It points to the music release Very, by the Pet Shop Boys, as one example of such music. Disco music has been at the heart of gay youth culture for two decades. Indeed, nothing is more indicative of gay men's determination to live through this appalling tragedy than the intensity of contemporary gay dance and rave culture, which articulates the complexity of gay men's lives and feelings with passionate precision. The author notes that no band has responded to this challenge with more integrity and musical imagination than the Pet Shop Boys, who more than anybody else have helped get gay men through these bad times. They have done so, moreover, with grace, wit, and intelligence; and their latest album, Very, is one their finest achievements. Like the Smiths, Marc Almond, and Jimmy Somerville, the Pet Shop Boys emerged out of nowhere, in 1985, with an all-time-classic pop standard, West End Girls. According to the author, Very exhibits in the highest degree the Pet Shop Boys' ability to produce classic pop songs that are also great dance music, while combining humor, pathos, and lyrical intensity.

The article presents information on the representation of AIDS in the Anglo-American media industry. It informs that British television (TV) and press depict AIDS as a disease associated with gay men. Gay men with AIDS are given speaking parts on British TV coverage. It is stated that the media's method of depiction of homosexual men with the disease implies that AIDS results from gay sex, and that gay people with AIDS are morally responsible for suffering from the disease. It is maintained that the Anglo-American media perpetrate fear of gay men. It is mentioned that AIDS is called the gay plague in British press reports. It is stated that in the U.S., civil rights given to homosexuals has been wiped out by AIDS phobia.
