(1) Background: The role of Al-Andalus’s women were the result of Arabization and Islamization in Spain. The 10th to the 14th centuries were a time of significant cultural diversity in the region. Female physicians and midwives were important for providing care to women. Despite existing studies, there is still a lack of focused research on the professionalization of these trades, including their requirements, intervention areas, and treatments. (2) Methods: To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review using the dialectical structural model of care (DSMC). Primary medical and legislative sources were used. (3) Results: two kinds of midwife, or qābila, were discovered, along with a woman physician, or ṭabība, who also acted as a midwife. These professions underwent diverse training and fulfilled duties as obstetricians and pediatricians. Midwives were esteemed members of society and were the sole female professionals who needed qualified training. Their performance in the courts was exemplary. Tools for facilitating childbirth and interventions related to female health were discovered in the study. (4) Conclusions: The patriarchal societies suffer from significant inequality in terms of academic training, knowledge transmission, and healthcare provision. Midwives functioned in segregated domestic and legal spaces and were responsible for providing public care to communities from the 10th to 14th centuries.

Awareness of culture and transculturally oriented care is becoming increasingly important as the world becomes closer, more complex and multicultural, so there is a need to bring into focus the interests and practical application of all health professionals. In order to improve the health-oriented behavior of members of different cultural groups, and thus prevent the occurrence of negative conflicts and destructive behavior there is a need to develop transcultural nursing around the world and also in Serbia. Global trends in terms of migratory change, imply the need to change the current practice in education and application of transcultural nursing among nurses in order to improve the quality of health care in Serbia and thus achieve equality in the provision of culturally congruent health care.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a programme designed to promote global health competency among nursing students. Design It used a randomized pre–post‐test comparison group design to compare the effects of a global health competency programme among nursing students. Methods Data collection for the pre‐test was carried out for 2 days (25–26 October 2018) and that of post‐test was conducted for 2 days (23–24 December 2018). A total of 38 fourth‐year nursing students participated in this study (14 in the international nursing group, 11 in the transcultural nursing group and 13 in the complementary and alternative medicine group). The participants were from the nursing department of a university in Cheongju. Results There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the pre‐test homogeneity test. The international nursing group showed statistically significant improvements between the pre‐ and post‐tests in global health competency, cultural competency, global health confidence and cultural nursing confidence.

Introduction: Caring is the most important to get patient satisfaction. However, currently caring is only considered as empathy without regard to the patient's cultural background. This study aims to investigate patient satisfaction regarding nursing services in a multicultural area by using the ethnocaring model as a predictor. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on patients in a nursing service in Subang District (n = 135 using consecutive sampling). Maintaining beliefs (MB), culture care preservation (CP), knowing (KN), being with (BW), negotiating (NE), doing for (DF), enabling (EN), and restructuring (RE) are used as independent variables, and patient satisfaction (PS) as the dependent variable. The instrument used was developed in accordance with ethnocaring model and PSQ-18. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the ability of the ethnocaring model as a predictor of patient satisfaction. Results: The results showed that patient satisfaction had a mean score of 14.42 (score interval = 0-18). The following are the p-values for each variable: MB (0.021); CP (0.032); KN (0.015); BW (0.038); NE (0.026); DF (0.033); EN (0.043); and RE (0.034); they can all significantly predict PS with R-Square = 0.815. Conclusion: The strength of the ethnocaring model in predicting patient satisfaction was 81.5%. The construct of ethnocaring model could help nurses in understanding patient satisfaction.

Introduction: As part of its mission to advance Transcultural Nursing worldwide, the Transcultural Nursing Society Scholars upholds the central role of the discipline and cultural competence in advocacy, empowerment, and transformation of the life conditions of disadvantaged populations. This White Paper affirms the Scholars' core belief in the value of Transcultural Nursing and culturally competent care in addressing social determinants to promote health equity. Methods: The Scholars Education Interest Group proposes recommendations for changes in education, practice, and research undergirding the discipline and expand cultural competence to directly address social structural and historical forces that perpetuate health vulnerability in diverse populations. Results: Collaborative leadership between the TCNS Scholars, Board of Trustess and members should develop initiatives to foster implementation of the recommendations and promote global dissemination of exemplars in education, research and practice. The article presents the discussion on growing diverse immigrant population at the U.S.–Mexico border in recent years. Topics include suicide risk elevating among Hispanic immigrants and potentially equating to that of Americans with increased time spent in the US; and discrimination by fostering resilience and meaningful social bonds in the diverse ethnic population.

Background: Cultural competence development in the formative process of healthcare professionals is crucial for the provision of culturally appropriate health care. This educational issue is highly relevant in the growing multicultural composition of southern Chile. The objective of this study was to examine how the healthcare professions curricula at the Universidad de La Frontera, in La Araucanía Region, prepares future professionals to respond to patients' cultural needs. Method: A sequential transformative mixed methods design composed of two phases was carried out. Phase 1 reviewed all printed material and documentation to explore content that developed cross-cultural skills and competencies in the curricula. In Phase 2 semi-structured interviews were conducted with academics with responsibilities for the development of the curriculum in each career, to detect how academics envisage the incorporation of cultural competence in the curricula. Results: Regarding curricular contents, findings indicated that the healthcare professions curricula at The Universidad de La Frontera have similar approaches to the inclusion of CCT in subjects' syllabuses, with inclusion of the different CCT, particularly in the Dental and Medical curricula. However, this coverage showed significant variations in the undergraduate healthcare curricula. The analysis revealed that themes around the Ethics and human values for professional practice; the Psychosocial and cultural determinants of health; the Relationship health-family-community, and to a lesser extent, the Clinician-patient relationship were well covered in the courses. On the other hand, Inequalities in health was the theme with the least contact time in all three courses. Academics called for a better organisation of the inclusion of CCT in the curricula. They also highlighted the challenges of maintaining the dominant paradigm underlying healthcare models, practices, and orientations within the academic staff and health discipline. Conclusion: Curricula contents findings indicate that the healthcare professions curricula at Universidad de La Frontera have similar approaches to the inclusion of CCT in subjects' syllabuses. However, its depth of coverage allows for improvements. The systematization of CCT and teaching–learning methodologies in healthcare professions curricula is necessary to develop formative processes that allow future professionals to be aware of and respectful with patients' cultural characteristics and needs. This study aimed to examine the relationships between resilience, moral sensitivity, and cultural competence among nurses. A descriptive correlational design was employed. The study comprises 120 nurses. The resilience total scores and most of its domain scores were significantly and positively associated with the cultural competency total and domain scores. Additionally, the resilience total scores and some of its domain scores were significantly in relation to the moral sensitivity total and domain scores. Resilience total and domain scores were significantly and positively related to the moral sensitivity total and domain scores. The emergent correlations underscore the role that resilience plays in nurses' moral sensitivity and cultural competence. Cultural competency is essential for providing transcultural nursing care. This qualitative study explores nurses' experiences of providing transcultural nursing care to patients from ethnic minority in Yunnan province, China, with the aim of supplementing and enriching previous quantitative research. Yunnan is home to 25 ethnic minorities with the highest proportion (33.1%) of people from ethnic minorities in China. A descriptive qualitative method was used to describe the experiences of 12 nurses. Data were collected in October 2020 through semistructured interviews and analyzed using conventional content analysis methods. Three themes were generated, including limitations of resources to provide transcultural nursing care, challenges in providing transcultural nursing care, and concerns about the quality of nursing care. The results suggest that there is scope for improving cultural competence of nurses in Yunnan through education that would enable them to provide high‐quality transcultural nursing care. Training topics could include transcultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, minority languages, and immersive multicultural experiences. Other suggested improvements include a resource room for transcultural care, the accommodation of religious and dietary needs, and dedicated staff who lead transcultural care in hospitals. Aim: This review aimed to identify the nature of racism in the nurse–patient relationship and summarize international research findings about it. Design: A scoping review of the international literature. Data sources The search process encompassed three main online databases of PubMed (including MEDLINE), Scopus and Embase, from 2009 until 2021. Review methods: The scoping review was informed by the Levac et al.'s framework to map the research phenomenon and summarize current empirical research findings. Also, the review findings were reflected in the three‐dimensional puzzle model of culturally congruent care in the discussion section. Results: The search process led to retrieving 149 articles, of which 10 studies were entered into data analysis and reporting results. They had variations in the research methodology and the context of the nurse–patient relationship. The thematical analysis of the studies' findings led to the development of three categories as follows: bilateral ignition of racism, hidden and manifest consequences of racism and encountering strategies. Conclusion: Racism threatens patients' and nurses' dignity in the healthcare system. There is a need to develop a framework of action based on the principles of culturally congruent care to eradicate racism from the nurse–patient relationship in the globalized context of healthcare. Impact Racism in the nurse–patient relationship has remained a relatively unexplored area of the nursing literature. It hinders efforts to meet patients' and families' needs and increases their dissatisfaction with nursing care. Also, racism from patients towards nurses causes emotional trauma and enhances job‐related stress among nurses. Further research should be conducted on this culturally variant phenomenon. Introduction: Jack Goody and Edward Evans Evans-Pritchard have been two eminent Africanist anthropologists who have developed their works and research regarding Cognitive and Symbolic Anthropology and can contribute knowledge to Applied Anthropology. Objectives: to expose the personal reflections on the intersections in cognitive and symbolic anthropology of the works of Jack Goody (The Domestication of Savage Mind) and Evans-Pritchard (Theories of Primitive Religion) and to argue in a reflexive way the possible applications of both works to Applied Anthropology in Education and in Transcultural Nursing. Methodology: in-depth reading and subsequent reflective comparative analysis of both works to then propose possible applications to the aforementioned disciplines or professions. Development and results: Jack Goody converges with Evans-Pritchard at a cognitive and symbolic level. Both authors show that human beings, regardless of their ethnic or cultural origin, have different forms of cognitive organization of reality and different symbolic forms of expressing and to ritualize their beliefs. This does not mean that some human groups are inferior to others, even if they are from preliterate societies. Conclusion and final reflection: both authors and both works can serve as semiotic elements for an education in cultural diversity, in the prevention of violent behaviour against hatred and to empathy people in their concept of health/disease to further develop Transcultural Nursing and Cultural Competence. Introduction: Since nurses and nursing students interact with culturally diverse clients in health care settings, training programs are required to improve cultural competence and self-efficacy among them. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an online cultural care training program on cultural competence and self-efficacy among postgraduate nursing students. Methods: The present interventional study used random sampling to allocate 80 postgraduate nursing students into the intervention and control groups. Cultural care training program was held for the intervention group. Results: No significant difference in cultural competence and self-efficacy scores was found between the intervention and control groups in the pretest. However, the intervention group scored higher in terms of cultural competence and self-efficacy after the intervention. Discussion: Given cultural diversity and prevalence of medical tourism, nursing instructors need to pay special attention to cultural care education at all academic levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Training for the development of cultural competence is often not part of the professional training of nurses within the European Economic Area. Demographic changes in society and the cultural diversity of patients require nurses and other medical staff to provide the highest quality healthcare to patients from different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, nurses must acquire the necessary cultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes as part of their training and professional development to provide culturally competent care to achieve this objective. Objective: This review aims to summarize existing methods of developing cultural competence in nurses working in clinical practice. Design: A scoping review of the literature. Method: The following databases were used: PubMed, ScienceDirect, ERIH Plus, and Web of Science using keywords; study dates were from 2011 to 2021. Results: The analysis included six studies that met the selection criteria. The studies were categorized as face-to-face, simulations, and online education learning methods. Conclusion: Educational training for cultural competence is necessary for today's nursing. The training content should include real examples from practice, additional time for self-study using modules, and an assessment of personal attitudes toward cultural differences. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of Confucianism on health behaviors, health outcomes and medical decisions. The research was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, CINHAL, PsycINFO and Web of Science, without restrictions of language and year of publication. The search process identified 833 publications matching the search criteria, and after the review process, 40 articles were included. Family is a central aspect of Confucianism, and it seems to affect participation in medical decisions, taking care of relatives, ethical dilemmas and mental health problems. Although most Confucianist influence seems to be positive, some ways of thinking could increase suffering, burnout and a delay in healthcare seeking. Understanding these values could help health professionals to deal with the growing contingent of patients with different cultures and religious beliefs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To acquire a comprehensive understanding of the international nursing students' clinical learning environments, comparing and contrasting qualitative and quantitative insights., Background: The influx of international nursing students has increased in Italy and across Europe. These students, diverse in culture and language, encounter significant challenges to their education in clinical learning environments., Design: convergent mixed-methods research., Methods: Qualitative and quantitative data were collected concurrently and independently, with equal emphasis, following a QUAL-QUANT structure. Qualitative analysis used descriptive content analysis, while quantitative data were based on descriptive and correlation analyses on surveys using the CALD scale., Results: Overall 96 international nursing students participated in 24 focus groups. The CALD scale mean scores ranged from 2.7 to 4.5. The qualitative analysis presented two overarching themes: factors that promote a successful clinical learning environment and factors that inhibit a successful clinical learning environment in international students. The integration of qualitative and quantitative data generated four concordant and one discordant meta-inferences about the learning environment., Conclusions: Culturally sensitive clinical learning environments are imperative for the holistic development of international nursing students. Introduction: This service-learning, health promotion project used Leininger's Culture Care Theory to engage Baccalaureate Nursing students in a health promotion initiative specific to Hispanic community members. Methods: Thirty-seven students examined population health data, surveyed Hispanic community members to identify health priorities, and developed a population-specific intervention on diet and risk factors for diabetes. Students created a 5-min script focused on healthy eating plans with recognition of traditional foods associated with the Hispanic culture. Students delivered the script to community members attending an annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. Results: Seventy-six percent of the 488 community participants reported increased knowledge about diabetes risk factors and healthy eating habits. Each student completed a self-reflection on how the project impacted their transcultural skills and reported increased confidence related to engagement and communication with the Hispanic community. Purpose: Although more people from Middle Eastern countries are visiting South Korea for medical treatment, Korean nurses lack experience in treating them. Understanding and describing Korean nurses' experiences can help them provide quality care to these patients by enhancing their competency in culturally appropriate care. This study described the experiences of nurses who provide care to Middle Eastern patients in clinical settings in South Korea., Methods: We conducted a phenomenological study to describe nurses' experience of caring for patients from Middle Eastern countries. Ten nurses with prior experience in caring for these patients were recruited from a university-affiliated tertiary hospital. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted between May 1 and June 4, 2020. The transcribed data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method to identify the primary and minor categories representing nurses' experiences., Results: Four major categories (new experiences in caring for culturally diverse patients, challenges in caring for patients in a culturally appropriate manner, nursing journey of mutual agreement with culturally diverse patients, and being and becoming more culturally competent) and 11 subcategories were identified., Conclusion: Nurses experience various challenges when caring for Middle Eastern patients with diverse language and cultural needs. However, nurses strive to provide high-quality care using various approaches and experience positive emotions through this process. Culturally responsive teaching is a vital skill for nurse educators. A diverse nursing workforce is needed in the US to represent the population's demographics. Recruiting, retaining, and engaging a diverse student body is critical to addressing issues of disparities and cultural sensitivity in health care. In a project to promote success among diverse nursing students, nurse educators collaborated to create and present faculty development programs to build culturally responsive teaching skills. Introduction: Turkish population is characterized by its great cultural diversity, thus, Turkish nurses and nursing students often interact with patients of different cultural backgrounds from theirs. Cultural competence is needed to provide qualified contemporary nursing care. This study aimed to explore the literature on the cultural competence of Turkish nurses and nursing students. Methodology: The Whittemore and Knafl review methodology was used to extract, summarize, and synthesize data of 15 primary research articles published between January 2011 and January 2021. The search was done in the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center—ULAKBIM (PubMed, TRDizin, DergiPark). Results: Three themes were identified: cultural competence, cultural-related problems, and importance of training on transcultural nursing. Discussion: Appropriate educational courses on transcultural nursing should be implemented in Turkish nursing schools as well as in continuing education programs for Turkish nurses. Complex structural and social factors have created health inequities for Black sex workers. Black people, including those engaged in transactional sex, report leaning on spiritual beliefs to guide health-related decision-making, including whether to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Premarital sexual behaviour is a common behaviour in adolescence. The environment around the prostitution area can adversely affect the behaviour and personality development of adolescents. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with premarital sexual behaviour among adolescents who lived in former prostitution area based on transcultural nursing theory. A cross-sectional method was used for this study. The samples were 109 students who lived in the former prostitution area of Surabaya, chosen using the purposive sampling technique. The independent variables were knowledge, economic, lifestyle and cultural values, family and social support, religiosity, rules and policies, and technology. The dependent variable was premarital sexual behaviour. Data were collected by questionnaires and then statistically tested with Spearman's rho (ρ ≤ 0.05). The results showed that only religiosity had significant association with premarital sexual behaviour among adolescents (p = 0.004). While the other factors were not significantly associated with premarital sexual behaviour among adolescents. Religiosity is the most motivating factor to prevent deviant behaviour, including in terms of sexuality. Background: European nurses are expected to provide appropriate care for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. However, there is limited knowledge and understanding of this process. The aim of this study was to analyse the perceptions of culture and experiences of caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds of a purposive sample of qualified nurses from four European countries, namely Belgium, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was selected in order to understand complex phenomena through the participants' lived experiences, meanings and perspectives. Individual interviews and focus groups took place with 28 staff nurses and 11 nurse managers from four European countries. The sociodemographic and cultural characteristics of the sample were described and analysed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim, translated into English and analysed following Braun and Clark's phases for thematic analysis. Results: Five themes and twelve subthemes emerged from thematic analysis of the transcripts. The themes included: (1) relevance of culture for nursing; (2) culture in the healthcare service; (3) qualities of the healthcare professionals; (4) challenges to culturally competent care; (5) becoming a culturally competent nurse. Conclusions: There are challenges to the delivery of culturally congruent care, namely language and communication difficulties, prejudices and stereotyping in the health service, a tendency for ethnocentrism, a lack of education and training in cultural competence and a lack of support from the health service to facilitate new ways of acting. Background: Wellbeing among postpartum women needs to be assessed. This article aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation near infrared as a cultural nursing intervention for postpartum women in Indonesia. Methods: A research and development study design was undertaken from 2018 to 2020 in three stages to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation near infrared: a phenomenological study (n=20), a pre-experimental study (n=80) and a quasi-experimental design (n=90). Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and a Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: Three themes emerged from the qualitative study that focused on development tools. Photobiomodulation near infrared was developed to cover postpartum women's needs. Significant statistical differences were found in multiple outcome measures after implementing photobiomodulation near infrared. Aims: To increase the quality and safety of patient care, many hospitals have mandated that nursing clinical handover occur at the patient's bedside. This study aims to improve the patient‐centredness of nursing handover by addressing the communication challenges of bedside handover and the organizational and cultural practices that shape handover. Design: Qualitative linguistic ethnographic design combining discourse analysis of actual handover interactions and interviews and focus groups before and after a tailored intervention. Methods: Pre‐intervention we conducted interviews with nursing, medical and allied health staff (n = 14) and focus groups with nurses and students (n = 13) in one hospital's Rehabilitation ward. We recorded handovers (n = 16) and multidisciplinary team huddles (n = 3). An intervention of communication training and recommendations for organizational and cultural change was delivered to staff and championed by ward management. After the intervention we interviewed nurses and recorded and analyzed handovers. Data were collected from February to August 2020. Ward management collected hospital‐acquired complication data. Results: Notable changes post‐intervention included a shift to involve patients in bedside handovers, improved ward‐level communication and culture, and an associated decrease in reported hospital‐acquired complications. Conclusions: Effective change in handover practices is achieved through communication training combined with redesign of local practices inhibiting patient‐centred handovers. Strong leadership to champion change, ongoing mentoring and reinforcement of new practices, and collaboration with nurses throughout the change process were critical to success. Impact: Ineffective communication during handover jeopardizes patient safety and limits patient involvement. Our targeted, locally designed communication intervention significantly improved handover practices and patient involvement through the use of informational and interactional protocols, and redesigned handover tools and meetings. Our approach promoted a ward culture that prioritizes patient‐centred care and patient safety. This innovative intervention resulted in an associated decrease in hospital‐acquired complications. Introduction. Insufficient cultural competences among health care professionals (HCPs) working with ethnic minorities may result in poorer quality of care. This study aimed to develop a cultural intervention for HCPs. Method. The intervention was designed using the Behavior Change Wheel. The development phase contained empirical studies of patients with HIV and African background, literature review, observations from a migrant health clinic, and transcultural care theory. Results. Systematic development will facilitate an intervention tailored to focus on nurses' sensitivity and awareness, and aims to give them tools to identify narratives about patients' life situation and self-management as well as provide effective, compassionate, and culturally competent care. Introduction: Human trafficking is an enormous global threat. Primary care clinicians are part of a safety net of professionals who may be able to identify and assist trafficking in persons (TIPs). The purpose of this systematic review was to explore clinicians' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in identifying and assisting TIPS in health care settings. Methodology: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guided this review. Searches were conducted using PubMed, Medline Plus, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases that yielded 130 articles, of which 10 quantitative articles met eligibility criteria. Eligibility determination, data extraction, synthesis, and evaluation were independently conducted by the authors. Results: Findings revealed deficits in clinician's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors on identifying TIPs in clinical settings. In addition, cultural influences affect TIP's decision-making. Discussion: To support the wide-ranging needs of TIPs, education programs that include clinician trainings on the skills required to identify and assist TIPs across cultures is warranted. Introduction: Little is known about human papillomavirus (HPV) information sources and communication among Chinese students attending U.S. colleges. We assessed information sources and communication about HPV and HPV vaccines among this population. Methodology: A cross-sectional design with 449 participants was conducted by using a questionnaire and snowball sampling. Summary statistics and multiple logistic regression were used. Results: The most common sources of HPV information included the internet and friends. Communication about HPV occurred most frequently among friends, family, and health professionals. Those who had better HPV knowledge and attitudes and were vaccinated against HPV were more likely to use internet, friends, family, and health professionals as their information sources. Discussion: Because the internet, friends, and families are likely sources for HPV information and communication, future internet-based culturally appropriate education should offer information not only to Chinese students but also to their social circles. Introduction: The moral sensitivity of nurses positively affects the quality of patient care. For this reason, nursing students are expected to gain moral sensitivity skills during their education. The aim of the study is to examine the impact of transcultural nursing course (TNC) on the moral sensitivity levels of students. Methods: This study had a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 100 nursing students (intervention: 36 and control: 64). The intervention group was composed of students who had enrolled in the TNC. The data were collected through the Sociodemographic Information Form and the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire. Independent samples t-test and analysis of variance were used in data analysis. Results: The moral sensitivity levels of the students who received the TNC were significantly higher than those who did not. Discussion: The TNC is an effective teaching method in increasing the moral sensitivity levels of nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
